Changing Seasons VERONICA

Title: Converge. Diverge. Medium: Ink on paper Size: 39.7 x 31 cm Intention: This piece represents one's experiences in a year. Within that year, there are many possibilities of events. However, within those possibilities, only one will be what we experience. This is represented through the multitude of lines that diverge and converge with each other. It also represents the fact that there isn’t a straight line to walk on in life – that there will be many obstacles and detours.

Title: Home Medium: Altered Digital Print Size: 30.5 x 45.7 cm Intention: This piece is comprised of 2 photos taken by me. The photos are edited to overlap each other in order to create contrasting lines of cranes. Overall, this piece is about the migration of cranes during the winter, but the leading red crane signifies the leading of the migration to a warmer place, in this case, spring which can be seen as home or new beginnings. This piece is my take on photo manipulation, where photos are taken and edited digitally to make the photo unrealistic.

Title: Vivid Medium: Acrylic Paint on Canvas Size: 30.5 x 91.4 cm Intention: This piece reflects the vibrant yet calming colors of summer. It shows the perception that my friend has about summer as it is their design. With this piece I wanted to see if I could create a piece that fully matches what another person had in mind about a season without checking in with them periodically to see if I was on track. I chose to use acrylic paint because it was an easy material to work with in terms of creating a variety of colors.

Title: Mixed Medium: Printed Digital art Size: 25.4 x 30.5 cm Intention: This piece is comprised of 4 individual pieces that represent each season. It was created as an abstract digital piece to stray away from the other pieces in the exhibition which have more literal depictions of the seasons. Each individual piece combines form and color to invoke different feelings in the viewer. I chose to do digital art for this piece because I haven’t done a full digital art piece before and because it seemed to fit better for an abstract piece.

Title: Up Medium: Watercolor on watercolor paper Size: 39.7 x 31 cm Intention: This piece shows the perspective of looking up at a tree, in which the tree represents all four seasons. Each branch shows a different season because no matter what, trees evolve through the seasons. This piece also serves as a reset in the exhibition because of the drastically different perspective compared to the other pieces in the exhibition.

Title: Fall Medium: Acrylic paint with gloss medium on canvas Size: 40.6 x 3.5 cm Intention: This piece is a different take on the season autumn. Rather than depicting autumn as the variety of leaves in red, orange and yellow, I wanted to depict autumn as a more mellow and rainy season – as how it is in Vancouver. This was also inspired by Shae Salmon’s painting style to add to my intention to convey autumn as a mellow season. With acrylic paint, you can layer the paint to create more depth and detail in the painting.

Title: Transparent Medium: Wire wrapped in clear packaging tape with wire casing Size: 50.8 x 30.5 cm Intention: This piece is a depiction of the transition between autumn and winter. The clear leaves made from tape and wire falling into snowflakes shows the disappearance of autumn and the appearance of winter.

Title: Unusual Cold Medium: Sheet metal Size: 24 x 17.5 x 20 cm Intention: This piece is a sculpture made out of small pieces of sheet metal. It represents the cold and sharp feeling of winter. This is because when it snows in winter, the snow that reflects the sun is very harsh due to the vast amount of ice crystals. Furthermore, the metal represents the sharp cold that is experienced during the night.

Title: Isolation Medium: Photography Size: N/A (size of the tv used) Intention: This piece is a slideshow of photos taken when it was snowing to represent winter. The photos are meant to invoke the sense of isolation, but at the same time a sense of calmness. In a way, it also conveys a short story about observation and how if you pay attention to your surroundings, you can notice the smaller things that exist in a big world. This is fine art photography because my intention is to invoke emotion from the photos rather than capture the moment. CLICK IMAGE TO PLAY

Title: Change Medium: Linoleum Print on paper Size: 14.5 x 10 cm x3 Intention: This piece was inspired by the season it was created in, and sights that I saw during the time. It is printed with 2 different stamps – one in the background are falling sakura flowers and the one on top is bare trees in winter. The colors used contrast each other just as spring and winter do. It signifies new beginnings and change. Printmaking allows for multiple, identical pieces to be made while also allowing for layering of different prints, which is why it was chosen as the material for this piece.

Title: Perceptions Medium: Mixed Media Size: 48.7 x 48.7 x 6.5 cm Intention: This is an interactive piece where the viewers are asked to write on a sticky note what their favorite memory from a season was, and then post the sticky note in the rim of the clock. The background of the clock is divided into 4 sections matching with the numbers that pertain to each season. In addition, the clock is non-functional so that the viewer can be immersed in their memory as if time had stopped. This piece was created to bring the exhibition together, and as a reflection for the viewers.
