We are delighted to announce that Mr David Barnes has been awarded the Stephen Winkley Award, recognising a lifetime of service dedicated to improving the education and experience of students in Scotland and across the globe.
She said, “It’s really quite amazing. I couldn’t believe it when I got the email. I will get to explore so many subjects before specialising in Psychology. It feels like a whole new world has opened its doors to me.”
For 40 years, David has directly cared for and helped shape the lives of hundreds of pupils in Perthshire. From his first few days as a Resident Tutor to 21 years as Deputy Head of Pastoral and Head of Boarding, he has had an immeasurable impact on the school community as well as, leading major fundraising projects to help children in Kenya through the Strath Kenya Project.
Strathallan School’s Headmaster, Mark Lauder, said “David is a tireless champion of our pupils and a brilliant role model for all of us. Whether he’s giving advice or setting up a safe space to discuss mental health during the lockdown, he has always been a friendly face our students and staff can turn to.”

“Before moving to Scotland, I studied in Kenya and lived in London so adapting to life in Perthshire was a small adventure itself but I would do it all again. I can’t wait to see what life is like in New York City.”
The 17-year-old from Tanzania, who joined Strathallan School’s Sixth Form two years ago, said she was thrilled when she got the offer.
Strathallan School pupil Thandi S has received an offer to read Liberal Studies at New York University.
Senior Master at Strathallan School, David’s contribution to life at school has been recognised in the longest-running Boarding School’s Association award.
The judges of the award said, “David Barnes is a worthy winner of the 2022 Stephen Winkley Award. He has dedicated his career to education, boarding, supporting young people and to school life. He has always been there at the coal face and sharp end while also finding time to be an expert in the crucial area of safeguarding children. A role model for anyone working in the world of boarding.”
Strathallan’s Head of Sixth Form, Fiona MacBain said, “Ever since she joined our school Thandi has shown a strong work ethic and passion. She has thrown herself into new opportunities here that she had never done before including stage-craft for our school productions of A Midsummer’s Nights Dream and Legally Blonde. We wish her all the best for the future.”
On receiving the award, David said, “I feel very humbled. Education is a collaborative process and I’m just blessed to be supported by such fantastic colleagues, wonderful young people and a passionate community. I would like to thank the BSA for their award and a huge thank you and love to my family who have stuck by me throughout.”

Evan, who learn to swim when he was three months old, joined Strathallan in 2020 as a Swimming Scholar under Elaine’s guidance. He will be fully focused on the races ahead but he looks to follow in the wake of former Strathallan student and Scotland’s most decorated Olympian, Duncan Scott, as he starts to make a name for himself in the world of swimming.

The Perthshire-based pair will join the 16-strong Junior squad heading out to Banská Bystrica, Slovakia in July, with Elaine helping coach the team and Evan competing in his first international debut.
Elaine, who competed for Great Britain herself in 1986 at the Commonwealth Games before becoming a swim coach, said she was thrilled to get the opportunity to support Evan and the other 15 young British swimmers in Slovakia.
This year Strathallan School has been nominated for:
At 15 years old, Evan is one of the youngest swimmers selected for the squad. His selection to the team follows a number of incredible swims for his age-group including his performance in the Junior 400 IM final at the British Championships in April.
Evan said, “I’m excited to compete against other racers my age from across Europe and see where I stand. It will be a big step in my career and hopefully, there will be more to come.”
“This will be an invaluable experience for Evan who has progressed so well in the years he has been with us at Strathallan. He has a great work ethic which he brings to the school pool every day and that is now paying off as he emerges into the junior ranks of the swimming elite in the UK. These games will prepare him for any future major games.”
We are proud to announce that Strathallan School has been shortlisted for 3 Independent School of the Year awards, celebrating our students’ success and staff commitment during one of the most challenging periods in education.
The Independent Schools of the Year awards celebrate all that students, staff and wider school communities have achieved during the 2021-22 academic year and at Strathallan this has included a magnicifent return to performing arts with our very own Performing Arts Festival, two outstanding recent productions (A Midsummer Night’s Dream/Legally Blonde), the whole school coming together for the Big Sing and incredible success in sport.
Strathallan School swimmer Evan Davidson and Strathallan’s Head of Swimming, Elaine Johnston have been selected to represent Great Britain at the 2022 European Youth Olympic Festival this summer.

Alasdair joins fellow Strathallan Student Maisie M in the FIS U18 Maisie, team.who started skiing for Scotland when she was 14 years old, competed in her first FIS U18 Super G in January.
Situated in the heart of the 153-acre school, the new venture will help prepare students for work while also providing a ‘living room’ for parents, pupils and staff.
She said, “It feels great to be selected for the Scotland team again, I’m looking forward to spending another season with my team and I’m excited for the races ahead.”
The 15-year-old from Auchterarder, who has been skiing since he was 18 months old at Glenshee, was recently named U16 Scottish Champion at Cairngorm in March.
Making his debut on the Scottish Ski squad, Alasdair M said, “It’s a massive honour being selected to ski for Scotland, especially after the last year with little training due to Covid.”
Headmaster, Mark Lauder, said, “We are delighted to announce the opening of our Art Café to our wider school community. It is versatile, designed well and a great addition to the school. My thanks go to all the school staff and Blend team who have worked together to make this idea come to life.”
I’m not sure what’s better, the view or the coffee. It is the perfect place to recharge. - Sean N, Sixth Form Student
From expressionism to espressos, Strathallan School’s Art Department has undergone a major transformation with the launch of The Art Café.

Sundeep Salins, Co-Director of Blend Coffee, said, “We are thrilled to help open The Art Café at Strathallan. The school is a flourishing community, with over a thousand people onsite any given day so it is the perfect space to put our design philosophy into action.”
The pair will join former pupil Charlie Guest (GB World Cup team athlete) representing Scotland on the slopes.
Run by Blend Coffee, who have a string of successful coffee lounges in Perth, Dundee and Paisley, the latest development at the Perthshire school will offer hot and cold beverages, savoury snacks and milkshakes to the school community from a refurbished section of the award-winning Art Department.
Strathallan School student Katie B will swap Scotland for Southwest Virginia this summer as she signs with Emory & Henry College.
Strathallan School students Isobel W and Hannah J have been selected to feature in the Royal Scottish Academy’s Schools Art Awards exhibition after they impressed the judges with their art.
“I love that art can evoke reactions from people, even if it is still abstract it can stir their emotions and that’s what I wanted to do with this piece.”
Tommy said, “We are so proud of Katie as she continues her career on the court. Good luck out in Virginia, we can’t wait to follow your journey.”
“I created this artwork to express a feeling that I struggle to describe in words. I was trying to capture this focusing on atmosphere and mood. The painting is actually very small in terms of scale. I have only started painting with oils this academic year and my aim was to work on paper in a loose and slightly expressive style.”
The 17-year-old from Auchterarder said she was thrilled with the offer to join Emory & Henry’s tennis team the Wasps and study Psychology.
She said, “College tennis in North America is on a whole other level, it’s a great opportunity to continue to play matches and grow in the game. I can’t wait to get out there and see where it takes me.”
She said, “Having my artwork recognised has meant more than I would have guessed, it was something totally unexpected and it makes me feel proud of something I have created to be recognised.”

Strathallan student Hannah J from The Hague, The Netherlands, was also highly commended in the same category for her piece Iona.
Based in the Appalachian Highlands, Emory & Henry College is a liberal arts college founded in 1836. With a 10:1 studentto-teacher ratio, it is consistently ranked among the best private liberal art institutions in the United States.
Isobel, who joined Strathallan from Perth Australia, said she was thrilled to have her artwork recognised.
Receiving over 350 entries per category, Isobel W was named Senior runner up, placing second in the country for her piece on the theme of feeling ‘lost’.
Hannah said, “I was quite surprised to get commended, I completed it at home when I was recovering from an injury so it’s great to know my hard work has been appreciated.”

Traude fell in love with Scotland in 1989 when she came over on a year abroad as a Foreign Language Assistant. She promptly returned to Perthshire in 1994 to start a family. Since 2003, she has been a teacher of English as an Additional Language (EAL), as well as a Resident Tutor and German language teacher at Strathallan School, helping hundreds of overseas pupils with their English.
Alexander, who joined Strathallan in 2020, said, “I can’t wait to get started. It’s a new challenge but we have a great group of lads who are working together really well.”
Andrew Henderson, Director of Strathallan’s Rugby Academy, said, “It’s great to see Alex selected for the Under-18 squad. He works hard and has taken every opportunity in his path. I’m sure he will continue to put his best foot forward in France.”
The Perthshire pupil, who has played for the Glasgow Warriors Under-18 and Under-16 squads as well as Highland Rugby Club, first picked up a ball at age of four. He said he was incredibly proud to present Scotland on the pitch.
Aimed at young adults and above, the cosy British mystery is Traude’s second book, following a mystery novel she wrote in German called Flammenschatten published in 2015 by Gmeiner Verlag.

Alexander T selected for Scotland’s Under-18 Six Nations squad
Strathallan School student Alexander T has been named in the 26-player squad for the Under-18 Six Nations series.
The 54-year-old said: “I’ve always loved teaching. You feel that you can give a young person something that they can use in their lives and EAL is particularly good for that because I have been able to help pupils not just with exams but also helping them find their feet.”
Near Miss is free with Kindle Unlimited and available in paperback from Teacher-turned-authorAmazon.Traude, from Reutlingen in Germany, said writing the 254-page book was great fun.
“I’ve made some of my closest friends from places I never thought I would have in rugby,” he added. “I’m excited to give it my all out in France, stay focused and competitive and maybe make new friends in the fixtures.”
Traude added, “I will definitely keep writing; when something is your passion, you don’t mind the extra work. The next adventure is soon to follow.”
The 18-year-old from Drumnadrochit said he can’t wait to play for Scotland in the upcoming Six Nations festival in Marcoussis, France.
Alexander joins a long list of former Strathallan pupils who have been selected to represent Scotland at U18 level including Glasgow Warriors Murphy Walker, Ollie Smith, Leicester Tiger Cameron Henderson, as well as seasoned internationalists Jamie Ritchie, Murray McCallum, Zander and Matt Fagerson, and George Horne.
“I just wanted to write something I would enjoy reading myself,” she said. “I like light-hearted stories, nothing gory or too dark, and I felt people would enjoy something to escape into when everything else seems to be doom and gloom.”

Jacob recently won Silver at the U15 Tetrathlon Championships in Bath and Blake placed 4th in the U19 Pentathlon
The brothers, from Kinross, said they were thrilled to get the chance to represent Great Britain again on the international stage, having last competed for Team GB before Covid.
Blake, 18, said, “I’m overjoyed to make the team, it’s always a pleasure to compete with national kit on.” Jacob, 13, added, “Getting to compete with the GB team is a great experience. After everything we’ve all gone through over the last three years, I’m excited to see where we stack up internationally.”
fell into Pentathlon by accident, having started their sporting careers on horseback, but with equestrian removed from Modern Pentathlon in November 2021 and the recent lockdown’s the Perthshire pupils had to put most of their training for Pentathlon on hold, apart from running.
Blake said, “With the fencing halls and swimming pools closed and horse riding voted out of the sport after Tokyo, we ran as much as we could and our hard work is starting to pay off. We are going into this season in the best running and shooting shape we could be. I love laser run because in pentathlon not everyone is even throughout the race but the laser run finale gives all competitors the opportunity for a last-minute win.
Jacob and Blake H have qualified to represent Great Britain at this year’s European Laser-Run Championships in Athens and the World Laser-Run Championships in Madeira.
Strathallan’s Director of Sport, Jim Thompson, said, “We are very proud to receive this prestigious award from Tennis Scotland. We are delighted that our tennis programme, which is offered throughout the whole school, has been recognised, which is led by our brilliant Director of Tennis, Mr Tommy Ogilvie. Congratulations to all involved – coaches, staff, volunteers, students and families for their continued support of all things tennis at BrothersStrathallan.”selected

Speaking of their sibling rivalry, Jacob said having his older brother Blake by his side was a huge inspiration. “Being brothers and being in the same boarding house at school, pushes us to be better. It adds that extra level of fun because you know no matter what happens you want to beat each other’s times but we also have each other’s backs. With Blake being older it’s great to see what I might be able to achieve and know what he’s been through to get there.”
Blake added, “Watching Jacob compete is one of the best things about our sports. I can’t wait to see what we can achieve in TheAugust.”Hedley brothers head out to the European Laser-Run Championships in Athens, Greece in August, with the World LaserRun Championships being held in Madeira, Portugal in October 2022. Whilst in Greece, Blake will also compete in the Triathle (swim, run and laser) and Jacob will compete in the Biathle (swim and run).
The talented pair are active athletes with in the sports of Modern Pentathlon, Tetrathlon and Laser-Run. Laser run, the final event in Modern Pentathlon, is a growing sport of its own, requiring athletes to run set distances then lower their heart rate to shoot accurately with a laser pistol.

tighthead said, “I can’t wait to go out to Italy with the squad, with no more stresses and be able to focus completely on my rugby. Even during the Six Nations, I was doing catch-up and past papers. I’ve always had exams in the back of my mind so it’s a major relief and really exciting.”
Three Perthshire pupils; Alistair R, Findlay M and Tally M, represented the school on the River Devon for two days.
Siblings Findlay and Tally paddled as a pair in the C2 class, coming 2nd in the J18 category. Individually, Tally came 2nd in the kayak K1 class at J16, she raced to second place in the J15 C1 and 3rd in the J18. Meanwhile, her brother Findlay won the Men’s J18 C1, becoming Scottish Schools C1 Champion.

But she was far from alone. The success of the show was due to the quality of the cast around her. Iona F’s Paulette touched the right balance between comedy and pathos, with her rendition of Ireland being one of the standout moments of the show. Elvie H, Anna T and Aisha S bowled us away both as the three muses and also as examples of Strath’s versatility – on one night Aisha took time off during the day to play Rugby at county level and was back on stage just a few hours later.
Performing Arts
It quickly became apparent that the competition for roles was going to be fierce, but what a cast it produced. Taking the lead role of Elle was Anna C. She simply owned the role and whilst the ensemble around her was marked by standout performances, she still managed to dominate with the strength of her performance, her extraordinary vocal range and her sense of comic timing.
There’s another power couple of course. Ashley Q and Daniel W, both new to Strathallan theatre, struck just the right balance. But at its heart, ‘Legally Blonde’ is a comedy. Thank goodness for the established expertise here of Sophie C, Katie B, Kai H and Roli S. It’s fair to say that the accolade for Strath’s favourite power couple is in absolutely no doubt after the mastery of latter two’s rendition of Gay or European? The Delta Nus, in fact all of the supporting cast, were magnificent. Special mention however absolutely must go to the incoming Head of Drama for the next school year. Ethan W continued to show his acting credentials with the erstwhile villain of the piece – Callaghan. He also – possibly more importantly, provided the cutest ever little dog to play Bruiser Woods.
Strathallan Theatre is back.

Last year we celebrated our beautiful campus and staged an outdoor production, but this year the relaxation of restrictions in the Spring term meant we could move back indoors. The project was one of the most popular amongst the musical theatre afficionados – ‘Legally Blonde.’
There is a key dynamic in ‘Legally Blonde,’ the touching relationship between Elle and Emmet. Here, Angus K stepped up to the plate. His musical credentials were never in doubt but he was moving out of his comfort zone taking a leading dramatic role. He needn’t have worried. Under Neil Hamilton and David Foster’s guidance he rose magnificently to the challenge and bought the house down every night.
The credits, however, continue beyond the front of stage performance. Backstage a quite extraordinary level of responsibility is taken by our stage crew. Led by Jayden M and Rebecca J, all aspects of set build and stage management are handled with absolute professionalism. The same goes for the student-centred band; weeks of rehearsals and playing a challenging score, they are more than deserving of the ovations at the end of each performance.
Douglas P rose to that challenge and then some. His Miss Trunchbull was a triumph – comic timing and characterisation at their finest were evident in this memorable performance. This fine young cast all deserve huge credit for the energy and enthusiasm they bought to their performances. Credit to goes to the stage crew. Two members of the prep school joined them for this show and as Hunter S said, they worked harder than the actors did, it’s just that nobody saw them! Thanks go to the many senior pupils who helped with the show, particularly with the hidden roles of make-up, costuming and backstage support. On behalf of all who so enjoyed the performance, thanks must also go to the staff whose expertise brought the performance to realisation. Ms Simon with music, Mr Foster with drama and Ms Goodfellow with choreography. It was a brilliant end to a hugely busy term and just showed how wonderful our maggots (sorry, pupils) really
Strathallanare. Prep School
It is traditional for the junior school to have an end of term show at Strathallan but this year is the first (of many) under the specific auspices of the Prep school. Roald Dahl’s story of a feisty little girl using her precocious intelligence and a few superpowers to overcome a bullying headmistress is well known. Our pupils’ enthusiasm for the project was clear from the first moment they exploded onto stage, through every lively song and dance and each poignant moment of Matilda’s story; her cruel parents played magnificently by Isla S and Will D; her saviour Miss Honey played by Elspeth W; the librarian, Imogen S, who so loves Matilda’s stories and the characters who populate them played by Harriet R and Amy M. Matilda is supported by a group of magnificent big kids and little kids who are variously tormented with the threat of The Chokey and whose brilliant performances absolutely brought the show to life. But there are two main characters so central to the show that the show’s success is reflective of their performances. Anna P sang beautifully and really did this amazing part proud. However, it’s the demon headmistress that we all love to hate that presents the biggest acting challenge.
Major Marjoribanks, CCF Contingent Commander and of course, Strathallan maths teacher, gave an inspirational lecture in the latest 1st and 2nd Form lecture series. A fascinating insight into a career in the military and transition to civilian life! Amazing!
