Alasdair earns national call-up for Scottish Ski team

A rising star in skiing from Strathallan has been selected for the Scottish Alpine Ski Team for the second time.

Moving up to the adult ranks of ski racing this year, Strathallan’s ski captain Alasdair M has had the opportunity to race against World Cup-winning athletes and said he is honoured to be selected for this year’s U18 Men’s Ski team.

“It has been a difficult year, moving up to the adult ranks and competing with some of the world’s top skiers but I’ve had a great season on the slopes,” he remarked. “I am beyond delighted to ski for Scotland again.”

Alasdair, who took up skiing at the age of 18 months old, said he was confident about the year ahead.

“To be successful this year, I need to keep balancing my skiing and studying. Fortunately, I get all the support I need to complete my school work from the staff at Strathallan.”

In the off-season, Alasdair said he will continue to dedicate his time in the gym to become faster and stronger for the slopes.

Strathallan’s Director of Sport, Jim Thompson, proudly commented, “We are delighted to see Alasdair be called up to the Scottish Alpine Ski Team again. He has put in so much effort this year and continues to push himself forward.”

Alasdair’s national call-up places him alongside the distinguished Charlie Guest, an Olympic and World Cup alpine skier who progressed from being a Strathallan student to an established professional athlete.

Ross aims to strike gold for Scottish Hockey

Strathallan student Ross T said his dreams have come true when he was chosen for the U18 Scottish Aspiring Hockey Squad.

Expressing his joy at being selected for the squad, Ross said, “It has been a dream of mine to play for Scotland and it is incredible to have been given this opportunity to represent my country.”

Ross, who began playing hockey eight years ago at Craigclowan Preparatory School, has trained hard at local clubs and Strathallan to hone his skills to the level where he is now recognised as a national player.

“The training and coaching I’ve received here has certainly been instrumental in improving my game. Learning to make decisions, understanding new ways to pass the ball, and accessing the resources at Strathallan has improved my skill as a player,” he added.

Commenting on Ross’ selection, Strathallan’s Director of Sport, Jim Thompson said, “We were beyond delighted to learn about Ross being named in the Scotland Aspiring squad. He is a brilliant young hockey player with a promising future ahead. He has been instrumental in the success of the Strathallan’s 1st XI in the past three years and we all extend our best wishes to him for a successful summer of hockey.”

The Scottish Aspire Hockey squad is gearing up for an exciting summer, and if selected, Ross could take part in the U18 Euro Hockey Championships, competing against some of Europe’s best teams including The Netherlands, Germany, England, Belgium, and Spain.

After concluding his exams, Ross plans to spend the summer as a coach at one of Strathallan’s Hockey Camps to work on his coaching techniques. His future plans include studying Sports Science at university starting in September.

Clocking in at a lightning-fast time of 24.6 seconds, she now holds a remarkable 8 school records. When commenting on her most recent success, Sophie said it was thanks to former Strathallan coach John Fleming that she started sprinting.

She said, “Mr Fleming (athletics coach) saw me run at my first Sports Day at Strathallan and took me under his wing. I am so glad he did, he pushed me to achieve so much and I wouldn’t be where I am without him.”

She continued, “I’m really proud of how I ran on Tuesday. It’s nice to leave a legacy, something other pupils can strive towards. I’m looking forward to Sports Day this weekend and seeing what my house Thornbank can achieve this year.”

Sophie was one of 26 senior pupils who competed as a team at Meadow Bank stadium in Edinburgh, with 6 pupils taking podium positions in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m.

Director of Sport at Strathallan, Jim Thompson said, “All our athletes delivered outstanding performances, igniting the spirit of competition and friendly rivalry between the schools. It was fantastic to see so many under 16s and over 16s competing.”

“As we get ready for Sports Day on Saturday, we are looking forward to another action-packed event full of fierce but friendly competition between our Houses. I cannot wait to welcome parents and supporters to Big Acre this weekend.”

Strathallan student stitches her way to success

A talented Strathallan School pupil from Ukraine has been accepted to an elite London Fashion School after designing breathtaking garments for A-Level Art.

Khrystyna B has sewn herself a spot at the renowned Istituto Marangoni, less than a year after she first picked up a needle and thread.

With offers pouring in from seven renowned fashion schools around the world, Khrystyna said she was over the moon to secure a place in London.

“I am incredibly proud to have been accepted into Istituto Marangoni. It's a dream come true for me,” said the 17-yearold fashionista.

“Fashion has always been my passion, and being able to pursue my studies at such a prestigious institution is a tremendous opportunity. I want to continue creating art and I hope to make my family proud.”

A Sixth Form student at Strathallan, Khrystyna discovered her love for fashion at a young age, having helped her fashionsavvy mother in running a clothing store in Ukraine when she was growing up. However, it was her experience in Perthshire that provided the perfect platform to unleash her creativity and captivate art schools with her talent.

Under the guidance and support of Strathallan's award-winning Art department, Khrystyna dedicated herself to honing her new craft and pushing the boundaries with her eye-catching designs.

Frank Glancy, Head of Art at Strathallan, said, "We are incredibly proud of Khrystyna and her exceptional talent. Her passion for fashion is evident in every stitch, and her unique designs are a testament to her creative vision and hard work. Khrystyna has left a huge impression on our art department and her story will no doubt inspire fellow students to explore their own artistic talents. We wish her all the best as she embarks on this exciting journey."

Wild Walks for Wellbeing spring up at Strathallan

Strathallan School launches a series ‘Wild Walks for Wellbeing’ to help reconnect students and staff with nature.

Captivating nature boards, strategically placed throughout the school's impressive campus, offer an immersive experience for walkers, allowing them to listen to and read detailed narrations on the natural history of the area.

Mr Leslie Kent whose passion for environmental conservation led to the creation of these nature boards with help from support staff across the school.

He said, "I'm over the moon to see young people engaging with the wonders of nature around them. It's essential to spark their interest, as it determines our ability to protect and preserve the environment for future generations. This marks the beginning of a new legacy, a wild legacy."

‘Wild Walks for Wellbeing’ features four inter-connected walks, encompassing more than 12 viewpoints and interpretation panels filled with detailed information about the surrounding nature. To enhance the experience for all, each panel includes a scannable QR code that enables walkers of all ages and abilities to listen to Mr Kent describe what they might be observing and hearing around them at certain locations.

"Scientifically, we know that being at peace and spending time in nature has tremendous benefits,” continued Mr Kent. “Doctors now prescribe nature to patients, so we have taken a step further by signposting the abundant array of wildlife found here at the School. From the enchanting signets in the pond to the ancient orchard and the nine species of ladybirds identified here in 2019, our natural habitat here is truly remarkable."

Highlighting the need to disconnect from the constant digital connectivity of modern life, Mr. Kent added, "Our lives are consumed by emails and mobile phones, resulting in a fast-paced and hectic existence. It is crucial that we take action to combat this and reconnect with our environment. By dedicating time to listen and engage with the natural world, we all significantly enhance our wellbeing."

Strathallan School's ‘Wild Walks for Wellbeing’ aim to reignite the appreciation for nature, allowing students, staff, parents and friends of the school to find solace, inspiration, and a renewed connection to the world around them.

We were the first Scottish school to join the Pre-Senior Baccalaureate, and we were recognised for the quality of our teaching with the Primary Science Mark, as well as the BSA Award for Boarding Innovation. Outdoor learning has flourished and I was so proud when the pupils launched their “Bee the Change” initiative at the UN Water Conference earlier this year. Our pupils are so creative, it’s truly an exceptional place to learn and I am so excited to be able to welcome children as young as five to our school this year.”

It will be a great privilege to be able to see younger pupils than ever join us and benefit from this truly special educational environment.”

Strathallan Rugby Academy player Lottie R has been selected for the Scottish Rugby U18 7s training squad.

Lottie, who usually plays as a forward in the 15-side game, has been chosen as a back for the faster version of the eggshaped game.

Despite her initial shock at being selected, Lottie said she couldn't be prouder to be considered for the 7s training squad.

"I've never really played 7s at a high level before, so it has been a really interesting change of pace," said the Strathallan Rugby Academy scholar, who also plays for Stirling County.

"Going from a forward in 15s to a back in 7s has taught me so much that will carry across. I can already see the benefits of my 7s training starting to pay off. The U18 7s team will come together for five weeks of training before a squad is named for a Rugby Europe tournament in Prague this July.

Strathallan School student Robbie W has secured a spot on the prestigious Scottish Cricket Under-17 squad, after showcasing his outstanding skills with the bat and ball this season.

Inspired by his father's love for the sport, Robbie's passion for cricket was ignited at a young age.

"As long as I can remember, I've always been playing cricket. I remember watching my dad play, and since then I’ve fallen in love with the sport," said Robbie, who also plays for Ayr Cricket Club.

Performing Arts

Oliver Jr

The toe tapping extravaganza that is ‘Oliver Jnr’ was brought to a resounding and joyful crescendo on the last Thursday and Friday of term.

With Oli D taking the title role, Evie B as Nancy and Annabel A as Dodger, the stage was set for Strathallan Prep School to bring the classic tale to life.

The dastardly deeds of Bill Sykes (Will D) and Fagin (Ruby A) kept the audience enthralled. Mention must go to the sheer quality of performance from these leading players but the whole cast and crew more than matched their standard.

Song after song was delivered by a young cast with a great future ahead of them. They acted, sang and danced as if they were born to it and the rapturous applause at the end of each performance showed true appreciation of their efforts.

Backstage, the Prep School stage crew worked together with their senior counterparts to make sure the show ran smoothly whilst others had been responsible for hair, make-up and costuming. Every part of this incredible performance was a tribute to the skills, enthusiasm and efforts of this hardworking cast and crew.

Musical Director Sarah Simon, Director David Foster and choreographer Robyn Goodfellow had worked for weeks with the young cast. How proud they must have been to see this hard work pay off. Mr Foster in particular, whose last show at Strathallan this was, signed off in fitting fashion.

Art

Sophie’s art recognised by Royal Scottish Academy

Strathallan School pupil Sophie D has come Highly Commended in the prestigious Royal Scottish Academy’s Schools Art Award.

Named as creating one of the top pieces of art submitted this year, Sophie said she was over the moon to be recognised for her work which depicts a fishing boat moored at a jetty in Greece.

The RSA Art Award has been running since 1986 and is considered one of the most prestigious awards made available to pupils. This year over 800 pieces of art were submitted by students across the UK.

Sophie said, “I definitely didn’t expect it but I’m so happy to be featured. I love making art and want to continue Art at A Level next year so it’s lovely to be recognised for my work.”

Her artwork was painted onto an A2-size piece of wood, covered in scraps of newspaper. Painted with acrylic, her piece features the reflection of the boat sitting at the end of the jetty in the crystal-clear Mediterranean waters.

Frank Glancy, Head of Art at Strathallan, said, “It’s always fantastic to see one of our pupils get acknowledged for their creative work by the RSA and Sophie deserves this praise. The level of skill in her piece is fantastic and I can’t wait to see what she does next year in Art.”

Strathallan Prep School

“Can we do this every day?”

Year 6 embraced nature and discovered the wildlife we have right here at school. With the guidance of Mr. Kent, Mrs. Angus, and Miss Morris, they identified beautiful butterflies, damselflies, frogs living in trees, and tiny bugs.

They finished their trip by watching the countless smooth newts in our Curling Pond, dug out and re-naturalized by our John Muir Trust group over the last two years.

Classrooms don’t get much better than this!

Foresters of the future recognised at Strathallan Prep School

Year 6 Class at Strathallan Prep School have been awarded the Junior Foresters Award by His Majesty’s Deputy Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross, Alex Cairncross.

The Junior Foresters Award celebrates the exceptional efforts of young individuals who demonstrate a deep understanding of forestry and conservation practices.

Under the guidance of Mr. Vallot and Miss Gill, a group of 18 students from Year 6 have showcased their environmental stewardship by successfully completing six diverse activities. These activities encompassed a wide range of skills, including tree identification, assessing risks in local forests, studying minibeasts and forest wildlife, constructing a bug hotel, planting trees, and effectively communicating the importance of environmental care to the rest of the Prep School.

Alex Cairncross, Deputy Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross, who recently presented Strathallan Prep School with a Queen's Green Canopy Commemorative plaque in recognition of the pupils' extraordinary achievements, said this class had taken the ethos of the Junior Foresters Award in their stride.

She said, "The dedication and hard work shown by the Strathallan Prep pupils by planting 480 trees and completing their award this year is remarkable. Their love for nature and their desire to create a greener future is evident in their actions. They are setting a brilliant example for others to follow."

“The Queen's Green Canopy which was established to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen's Platinum Jubilee, encourages individuals and organizations to plant trees as a symbol of their commitment to the environment. Strathallan Prep's involvement in this programme alongside the Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust A Tree for Every Child in Perthshire’ initiative, highlights not only their environmental consciousness but also demonstrates their role as responsible global citizens.”

Paul Vallot, who has guided these young environmentalists through Eco-Skills lessons, expressed his awe at the pupils’ commitment.

He said, "I am absolutely blown away by the incredible enthusiasm our pupils have put into earning this award. They have dedicated a significant amount of time to make a positive impact on our planet and the School couldn't be prouder."

Embracing the spirit of Holi

Second Form immersed themselves in a kaleidoscope of colours, spreading laughter, happiness, and love in honour of the Hindu festival of Holi.

Biodiversity Day

In honour of Biodiversity Day, Years 3, 4 & 5 had a talk from the forager Jayson Byles.

They learned about sustainable fishing, the benefits of seaweed and got to try locally caught food from the sea.

17

A Law unto Themselves!

When Miss Leese shared her Jury Duty experience with Year 3 & 4, little did she know the incredible journey it would take them on! Captivated by the legal process, the pupils created their very own courtroom and put one of their peers on trial!

Immersed in the excitement, the jurors of the classroom embarked on a captivating case. In their trial, Kate stood accused of the grave offence of taking more than 2 biscuits during break time! The young legal minds delved deep into the evidence, questioning witnesses, and exploring the intricacies of the trial process.

With great enthusiasm, acting judge Philippa presided over the courtroom. When the jurors delivered their verdict, Kate was found guilty as charged and sentenced to a million years in jail!

Fortunately, this was merely a practice trial and Kate could breathe a sigh of relief to know she won’t be spending multiple lifetimes behind bars. However, we think it's incredible to see the creativity and enthusiasm of our young learners, bringing their own spin to the judicial system.

Bravo to all the aspiring lawyers, judges, and jurors of the classroom, and thanks to Miss Leese for sharing this teachable moment.

Year 5 Art

Inspired by contemporary art from the Middle East, Year 5 got to work creating their own masterpieces.

Mini Highlands Games

We held our Mini Highlands Games with pupils from Year 3 to First Form. They competed as a Clan for a Highland Coo!

Our youngest pupils will be going all out in races, throwing events, and campus-wide competitions!

TASH for Ukraine

Five Strathallan Prep pupils took time out of their Highland Games to help deliver a minibus full of donations to TASH for Ukraine.

Together with the Rev and Mrs Troup, Robert, Fergus, Malcolm, Alfie and Jock unloaded rucksacks, sleeping bags, food, and clothes collected by the Prep School and the Scripture Union at Strathallan over the last few months.

The rucksacks and sleeping bags, previously used on The Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, were lovingly sewn up and fixed by our Sewing Club.

Our five helpers got a tour of the facility from the fantastic volunteers in Errol and learned about the efforts so far and what is now needed to help those affected by war.

Year 6 had wee visitor in their classroom

They rescued a little Pipistrelle and have been learning about bats, what they eat, where they live and what to do if you find one.

The bat was successfully released. Well done class.

Allez Allez! Le Tour returns to Strath!

Another exhilarating day at the Prep School as they embrace the spirit of Le Tour de France.

Once bike checks were complete, the peloton took off to Teachers Hill for a King of the hill competition. Then they tested their knowledge with a team quiz and finished off the day with a time trial around the Paddock.

The Yellow Jersey was triumphantly claimed by Ross M, however, we think it’s safe to say team spirit definitely won overall.

This year was also the first time we have seen student-led (unofficial) sponsors picking riders to race in their name. While we question the validity of the verbal contracts made on the spot, we absolutely adore the entrepreneurial spirit and the support shown by all the pupils throughout the day.

History of Education Centre

Year 5 visited the Victorian School at the History of Education Centre in Edinburgh, they received a first-hand education of what life was like for pupils in the 1800s.

Against the odds: Jacob overcomes injury to win at Royal Windsor Horse Show

Strathallan School student Jacob H overcame a serious injury to win the Royal Windsor Horse Show Tetrathlon competition for Scotland.

Jacob H, a Strathallan School pupil, defied the odds and made a triumphant comeback at the Royal Windsor Horse Show Tetrathlon. Despite a serious injury sustained in January, Jacob emerged victorious in both the individual and team events, proudly representing Scotland.

With an impressive score of 4603 points, Jacob secured the top spot by a mere 7 points, closely followed by his Scottish teammate Charlie.

Together with their teammate Anna, the trio showcased their prowess and stole the show, amassing a combined score of 13430, a full 538 points ahead of their Northern Irish counterparts, the next top team in the competition.

Ecstatic with the result, Jacob said, “I couldn't believe it when I saw the scores. Charlie and I pushed each other every step of the way, and despite falling behind in the shoot, I managed to make up ground during the run. It feels incredible to bounce back and secure gold for Scotland.”

As an active athlete in Modern Pentathlon, Tetrathlon, and Laser-Run, Jacob is determined to regain his competitive edge. Having represented Team Great Britain at the European and World Laser-Run Championships last summer, he is now focused on his U17 selection next year.

Perthshire pupil earns Junior NBA championship ring

Strathallan Prep School pupil Will D decided to try something new this year! He added basketball to his list of activities and helped his team the Denver Nuggets become Eastern Conference champions at this year’s Scottish Jr. NBA Festival 2023.

Despite having no prior experience in competitive basketball, Will's determination and talent quickly contributed to his team’s competitive edge, an experience he relished.

“I’ve only been playing for 10 months but it felt so good to win. Our teamwork was great and we played well together. I’m proud of our team,” said Will.

Emma Lalani, Head of Strathallan Prep, said, “We are incredibly proud of Will. He has gone out of his comfort zone to pursue a new passion. We are excited to see what he does next.”

Congratulations Katie L-K on earning her 1st Dan Black Belt in Taekwondo!

For the past 7 years, Katie has been honing her skills in TKD after being inspired by a friend to give it a go. Now, the Strathallan student from Berwick says she will wear her black belt with pride.

"Receiving 1st Dan is a huge milestone but it's also a fresh start," said Katie.

"Becoming a black belt is like opening a new window. For years you've been learning how to fly, now it's time to master it." Well done, Katie

15-year-old Farrah from East Lothian will compete with her horse King Cotton Legacy (PJ) later this month in the Elementary level category for the Under 25 team.

Farrah said, “It feels amazing to be selected as this is my first time on a pure dressage team. My horse, PJ is so hard working and it’s a great achievement for both of us. It will be a great experience and I’m looking forward to meeting new people and riding in such a big atmosphere.”

Farrah, who joined Strathallan last summer, has previously represented Scotland in Eventing at the U18 BE100 level in both 2021 and 2022.

Farrah, who has been riding since she was 4 years-old, added, “I joined Strathallan last September and have loved every minute of it! The school has always been so supportive of my riding. It feels amazing to get to represent Scotland again. I am so lucky to have a horse that is so adaptable and talented in so many areas of the sport and really owe it to him!”

Strathallan Netball Team secure top 3 finish at World School Games

The Strathallan School 1st VII U18 Netball team recently returned from an inspiring journey to the World School Games, where they showcased their exceptional skills on the international stage.

Led by Netball Captains Katie M and Olivia F, the team demonstrated remarkable resilience, securing an impressive thirdplace finish in the Plate. Katie and Olivia look back on their tournament run in the following report. The World School Games presented an unparalleled opportunity for the Strathallan netball team to compete against schools from various countries, exposing them to different playing styles and standards.

Throughout the tournament, the Strathallan players exhibited their adaptability and versatility as they faced teams renowned for their physicality and swift gameplay. The encounters proved to be a challenge, but the team quickly adjusted to the pace, resulting in close, competitive games.

“The girls all agree that our games have contributed to our individual and collective growth,” said Katie.

The journey began with an exhilarating match against Sedbergh which ended in a close loss.

Moving forward to the quarter-finals against Hillcrest International School from Kenya, the girls displayed their prowess, winning 28-4, earning them a spot in the highly-anticipated semi-finals.

In the semi-final, the Strathallan netballers faced their toughest opponents yet, the mighty Scarisbrick team from England. Despite a valiant effort, they fell short of victory, yet their spirits remained undeterred. Their determination surged as they set their sights on the final match, where they met a skilled team from Scotland, Balerno.

The final proved to be a nail-biting clash. The Strathallan team exhibited fantastic teamwork, culminating in a thrilling 17-14 victory. This performance secured them an impressive third-place finish in the Plate.

Reflecting on the competition, Mrs Louise Waugh, Head of Netball at Strathallan, expressed her pride in the team's achievements.

“I’m incredibly proud of the whole team. They have gained invaluable experience at the World School Games, which will stay with them as they move forward in the sport. We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in such a prestigious netball tournament. Thank you to our team and the great hosts at WSG.”

Speaking about his win, Murdo, who is currently training with the Scottish Alpine Ski Team in Norway, said, "It's an incredible feeling to emerge as the champion in my age group. Although I wasn't feeling my best, the support from my family kept me motivated throughout. I’m proud of my results this season.”

Director of Sport at Strathallan School, Jim Thompson, said, “We couldn't be prouder of Murdo’s achievement and the way he has represented Strathallan School. After being crowned U16 team champion in the Alps last year, it’s fantastic to see Murdo continue his success on the dry slopes.”

Strathallan School student Rachel F has been handpicked to represent Scotland in the 8 Nations Hockey tournament in Spain this week.

Rachel, who discovered her passion for the sport at the age of 8, expressed her joy at the chance to don the national colours as she takes to the field against international opponents this weekend.

Speaking about her selection, Rachel said, “It's a great opportunity and I can't wait to get out there. Just putting on the Scotland shirt and knowing you are representing your country is an incredible feeling."

The 8 Nations Tournament is scheduled to kick off on Friday, July 7, with the Scottish Emerging Girl's squad taking on their German counterparts in what promises to be a thrilling opening match.

Strathallan students serve up a Year of Triumphs and Titles in Tennis

As Wimbledon's Finals weekend approaches, our Head of Tennis reflects on a year of Tennis triumphs at Strathallan.

What a fantastic year it has been on the court.

The stand-out performance of the year was our Senior Boy's team's 3rd place finish at the LTA National Championships. Having played four matches to qualify for the finals, the team defeated Sevenoaks, Merchiston, and Millfield at the finals to steal 3rd place. The same team also finished as Scottish Schools Cup finalists earlier in the year.

Across U12, U15, U16 and U18 categories our Girls have picked up titles at inter-school tournaments both locally and regionally, putting in brilliant performances on the court.

Individually, we’ve had Scottish champions in singles and both in boys' and girls' doubles. And we've also seen fantastic representation at Scottish, county and district levels, with lots of tournament wins for our pupils competing up and down the UK.

And of course, another nomination for the Tennis Scotland School of the Year was a huge plus. Given that we won this prestigious award in 2022, it was great to see our pupilfocused programme and the efforts of our students and staff recognised by our governing body.

Overall, our teams have all performed incredibly well this year, from our Prep School pupils to Sixth Form students aiming to go pro. I am very proud of all of their efforts. Looking ahead to next year, we are looking to expand our programme, so it really is an exciting time for tennis at Strathallan.

Director of Sport at Strathallan School, Jim Thompson spoke highly of Rachel's commitment to hockey and her representation of the school.

Callum, who competed in the U20 Summer Series last year alongside fellow FP Andy Stirrat, said, “It’s a great opportunity. After playing in Italy last year and having a few experienced players will serve us well as a squad. I think we have an amazing opportunity to do something special as a group.”

Jonny, who joined Callum and fellow FP Harris McLeod in this year’s U20 Six Nations campaign, added, “Very excited, I can’t wait to get going and play in some tough conditions. Looking most forward to playing Samoa.”

Incredible innings for Innes

Former pupil Innes Parkin (Class of 2022) was awarded a plaque by Stephen Fry at Lord's Cricket Ground in recognition of his spectacular play for the Strathallan 1st XI against Marylebone Cricket Club last year.

Innes was invited to the England v Ireland test match where he was awarded this prestigious recognition by the renowned actor, author, and keen patron of the sport, Stephen Fry.

Congratulations, Innes!
