FeaturedRoyal Marine cadets pick up First Aid trophy at commando competition
Royal Marines cadets from Strathallan School were put through their paces last weekend at the prestigious Sir Steuart Pringle Trophy Competition.
Nine members of Strathallan’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF), led by Cadet Colour Sergeant Oliver K, attended the highly competitive competition held at Lympstone in Devon.
Representing the only Royal Marines CCF section in Scotland, the cadets were tested in teamwork, navigation, camouflage & concealment, battle skills, endurance and combat medicine by a team of instructors who were looking for the same levels of proficiency and determination as they would in regular commandos.
The Perthshire pupils, who were up against 16 other schools, were judged ‘spectacular’ in the First Aid section of the competition.
Cadet Sergeant Chloe McM, said, “We were delighted to win the First Aid section, especially as it meant we were the first Strathallan team to win a trophy at the Pringle competition. We weren’t expecting it but Jacy, our first aider, really stepped up and was so knowledgeable that we really got the chance to shine.”
Cadet Sergeant Ross T added, “It was a tough weekend but so much fun. You got used to being dirty by the end of the week. I’d say we are much stronger as a team now and definitely have learned to communicate better with each other.”
Cadet Colour Sergeant Jacy E, said the whole weekend felt surreal but has left her even more convinced that she wants to pursue a medical career.
“We gave our everything the whole weekend and never left a teammate behind when it got tough. Winning the first aid section felt euphoric. It was the last award to be announced and when our name came up my heart skipped a beat.”
“In the future, I want to become a paramedic and then a doctor, so once I’m qualified I hope to apply as a medic and serve my country. Currently, I’m teaching first aid to the younger cadets and I hope they get the same opportunities as I have to put my combat medicine skills into practice.”
Contingent Commander of the Strathallan CCF, Major Charlotte Marjoribanks said, “We are incredibly proud of the Strathallan team and look forward to training for next year’s event!”
Perthshire pupil becomes first Scottish woman to win Welsh Junior Open
Strathallan School pupil Molly H has become the first Scottish Woman to win the Welsh Open Championship Junior High Gun.
After only picking up the sport of clay target shooting in August 2021, Molly has represented Scotland at the European Champions, Home International, and was part of the Scottish Junior Team who won their first British Open Junior DLT Clays Championships since 1989 earlier this year.
Molly said her win in Wales is a moment she won’t forget, “It feels amazing, to know that I’m the first girl to win it and the first Scottish person, is an incredible achievement. I have a tradition of not looking at the scores whilst I shoot so I didn’t know right until the prize-giving that I’d won. It was a memorable weekend.”
Molly trains three times a week at Strathallan’s Shooting Academy, which comprises of the only purpose-built compact sporting clay pigeon shooting facility with nine fully automated traps at a school.

Strathallan School launches Esports suite for students
For the first time, pupils in Perthshire will be able to train and compete against each other on state-of-the-art gaming equipment.
Unveiled at the weekend, Strathallan has become one of the only schools in the United Kingdom to house elite-level esports equipment, offering students the chance to take their passions further.
“It’s a great time to be a student at Strathallan”, said former pupil Josh Martin.
A competitive Esports racer and Founder of Sim Staff, who helped install the four competitive gaming rigs at Strathallan, Josh said, “This is a truly exciting opportunity for the school. Strathallan now has four racing simulators, on which pupils can play a wide variety of games and familiarise themselves with the fundamentals of esports and the opportunities this presents. I can definitely see some great competitions brewing at the school.”
Josh, whose company Sim Staff has provided support to brands such as Samantha Tan Racing, Gfinity and Formula One, added, “Esports has grown massively over the last few years. It has gone from being largely hobbyist to full-time careers, scholarships and global partnerships with major brands. The potential is enormous. Formula One, the teams engaged and other sporting bodies are offering paid opportunities for players to compete with them virtually. Hopefully, over time, we will see even more opportunities become available for the next generation of gamers.”
Driving forward Esports at the school, Neil Hamilton, Head of Instrumental Music, said, “When I was asked if I would get the project running, I was thrilled. This is such a progressive move for the school and really demonstrates that they are aware of what pupils are interested in currently.”
“This is such an amazing asset for the school and the pupils seem to wholeheartedly agree. A superb addition to their boarding experience. Who knows, we might see some pupils playing for Scotland on the international esports stage in the future.”
Strathallan teacher Traude publishes her third book in a year
Less than six months since her debut novel ‘Near Miss’, the Perthshire-based teacher has published her third book, continuing her cosy mystery series set in Edinburgh.
‘Last Train for Murder’, which was published by The Book Folks in September, follows reporter Amy Thornton and Detective Inspector Russell McCord as they race to find the culprit of a mysterious poisoning.
We caught up with Traude Ailinger, author and EAL teacher at Strathallan School, to find out what motivated her to continue her series, The Edinburgh Murders.
What inspired you to write this series?
I have fallen in love with my characters who have taken on a life of their own. It is such fun getting them into trouble and out again.
How did you manage to write three novels in three years while working full-time?
It was lockdown that gave me the time and space to start a big project. Now, my Sundays and holidays look like this: sleep, write, coffee, write, eat, coffee, write, sleep, repeat.
I couldn’t do it without my first-class butler, proof-reader, and greatest fan, aka my wonderful husband, my supportive children and forgiving friends.
Mrs Irene McFarlane
for Scots Teacher of the Year award
Mrs McFarlane, who has been teaching Speech and Drama at Strathallan since 1989, said she was thrilled to be nominated in this year’s awards.
Irene said, “Efter working wi 100s upon 100s o barins, ower mair nor 40 year teaching, I’m up fir Scots Teacher of the Year.”
“I like to think that my job as a teacher is to make children proud of the languages they speak. I want younger generations to take ownership of Scots. It’s not just the language of Robbie Burns, it’s the vocabulary, grammar, idioms and colloquialisms of the 21st century and if we don’t continue to use it, it will sadly disappear.”
This isn’t the first time Irene has been up for a Scots Language Award, last year she was nominated for Scots Bairns Book of the Year with her translation of The Nicht Afore Christmas.
Irene, who started her career at Strathallan as an English and EAL Teacher before going on to be Head of Support for Learning, has been entering Perthshire pupils for London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art (LAMDA) exams for over 26 years.
Last academic year, a record level of Strathallan pupils entered the LAMDA awards, taking exams from Introductory level 3 to Grade 8 (Gold Medal level). Overall 56 pupils achieved Distinction (80%+), 3 achieved Merits (65%+) and 20 Medal (Grades 6 to 8) candidates achieved Distinction in Acting, Devising, Speaking in Public, Reading for Performance,The Speaking of Verse and Prose and Choral Speaking.
One of her current pupils, Ethan W, said Irene ‘completely revolutionised’ his attitude and appreciation towards speech and the Scots language.
“Before joining school I was a nervous little boy, Irene taught me to be more adventurous, outgoing and confident and her teaching has been applied to much more than just drama and speech. I have definitely applied many of the skills she has taught me to a lot of my daily activities including debating, music and sport.”
Now Vice-Captain of School, Ethan added, “Mrs McFarlane’s experience and wisdom continues to resonate with me and still, even in my final year of school I go to her for help and advice, in which every time without fail she always manages to support me through. Thanks, Mrs McFarlane.”
Freya set to serve for Scotland
Strathallan student Freya C has been selected to represent Scotland in the upcoming Four Nations Junior Championships 2022.
The Fourth Form pupil will be competing in Glasgow with the rest of her teammates from the 23rd-25th of September. Having represented Scotland in the same event twelve months ago, she is ready to build on that experience and help Scotland bring home the title.
Freya said, “I’m really excited to be playing for my country at the Home Nations for the second year in a row - l really enjoyed it last year and can’t wait to get on the court with my teammates.”
A very proud Head of Tennis, Tommy Ogilvie, said, “Freya’s selection to represent Scotland in September is a fantastic achievement and everyone at Strathallan wishes her well for the Home Nations. Freya has enjoyed a good summer, picking up some great results. We have one week left to help prepare Freya as much as possible for the event, and I know she is ready and looking forward to the challenge.”

Strathallan students celebrate excellent GCSE results
Perthshire pupils are celebrating success today after they picked up outstanding GCSE results.
Strathallan School saw a significant improvement on grades achieved in 2019, with students this year recording the school’s best-ever pass rate and the highest proportion of top grades in any year up to 2019.
90% of Strathallan pupils achieved 9 - 4 (the equivalent of A*C in previous years).
Headmaster Mark Lauder, said, “We are thrilled to see our students receive their tremendous results today. Strathallan continues to make huge strides forward academically despite our non-selective approach to education. To maintain this trajectory through covid is a testament to our staff and pupils’ hard work.”
Taking on 10 GCSEs, Music Scholar Joshua C received 7 9s today.
Joshua, who wants to pursue Aeronautical Engineering at university said, “I was so nervous, but I’m relieved with my results. I didn’t expect to get 9 in German, so that has really cheered me up.”
Joshua, who joined Strathallan from Cargilfield School, has plans to take forward Maths, Physics, Further Maths and Engineering at A Level. With his sights set on becoming an aerodynamicist in F1, he is looking forward to the school’s new Build-A-Plane project which will see pupils build a plane onsite with Kinross Aerospace starting in September.
Elise C obtained 6 9s and 2 8s at GCSE and celebrated her outstanding results by visiting the zoo with friends. Elise joined Strathallan from Golspie High School on a Swimming Scholarship in 2019.
She said, “I am so happy, it’s such a big relief after such a long wait! I am particularly happy with my sciences as I plan on studying chemistry and biology further in Sixth Form, so it is a nice confidence boost before A levels in September. Next, I plan on working hard in Sixth Form to one-day study medicine - a dream I’ve had since I was little.”
Also picking up results today was Strathallan student Angus G. Angus, who joined the senior part of Strathallan from the Prep School three years ago, received 7 9s, 1 8 and an additional 7.

Vice-Captain Murray called up for new Scottish Rugby Youth Panel
Strathallan Rugby 1st XV Vice-Captain, Murray O has been selected to represent the school and Kirkcaldy Rugby Club at the all-new Scottish Rugby Union Youth Panel.
Murray, who has been playing rugby since he was three, said it was a massive honour to be called up to the national panel.
“The Youth Panel discusses youth rugby and come up with creative ideas to help change the game in Scotland. I’d love to see more people enjoying the sport, whether that’s playing or refereeing, there really is something for everyone in the sport.”
Since joining Strathallan this year, Murray has gone on to Captain his Regional U18 team, played for the Glasgow Warriors Academy U18 side, and helped lead the school’s first-ever campaign at St Joseph’s College National Rugby Schools Festival.
Andrew Henderson, Director of Strathallan Rugby Academy, said, “Murray’s passion for the sport comes through in his performances. He is a great leader and team player. We wish Murray and all the Youth Panel all the best as they help make important decisions for the future of the game.”
Strathallan School performance of 1980s hit goes viral
A whole-school performance of John Farnham’s ‘You’re the Voice’ by Scottish school Strathallan has been a big hit.
This year’s Big Sing, which features 577 boarding and day pupils as well as hundreds of staff, has been watched more than 215,000 times on TikTok and 170,000 times on Facebook.
The largest school roll in Strathallan’s history gathered on school grounds earlier this year to sing the anthem. With Strathallan School Pipe Band providing the backbeat to the song, the power ballad also features singing solos, a full orchestra and a rock band.
The vision for this year’s Big Sing came from Strathallan’s Director of Music, Jason McAuley, who said, “It’s more important than ever to enable our young people to participate in music.”
“We knew right away that we wanted to involve as many of the school pupils in recording, so we took our mics from the swimming pool to the shooting range to make sure all the voices heard and music played was performed by our talented young people.”
This year’s viral hit video was recorded by Strathallan staff; Dominic Glasgow, Neil Hamilton, Kyle Howie, Jenna Peters and Peter Murch. The audio was recorded, mixed and mastered by Fraser Christie and the video was edited and produced by Dominic Glasgow.

ArtStrathallan art celebrated at prestigious Perthshire Art Association competition
Strathallan School pupil Rowan F has been named ‘Runner Up’ in this year’s Perthshire Art Association (PAA) annual exhibition.
Rowan shares his success with Strathallan’s Art department which was named ‘Best Overall School’ for the fourth year in a row.
The prestigious competition, organised by the PAA in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Perth Kinnoull, recognises the best artwork from artists and schools across Perth & Kinross and regularly sees over 100 entries each year.
Rowan, whose monochrome print of an ancient amphitheatre put him in second place, said he was thrilled to be featured in the exhibition.
“It feels great to come second in a big art competition,” said Rowan. “I’m interested in going into graphic design and this has really boosted my confidence. I love how methodological you can be with art and I enjoy trying new mediums in the art department.”
Head of Art, Frank Glancy, said, “Our students are consistently being recognised for the quality of their artwork that’s coming out of the school. It speaks volumes of their creativity. Seeing Rowan celebrated in the senior category, amongst such a large field of entries is fantastic.”
Strathallan has a history of artistic success; in 2019 former pupil Flora Wilson picked up the National Senior Award in the RSA Schools Awards. In 2020, former pupil Muna Nweke, landed himself with offers from 10 of the top Art schools in the world.
In 2021, former student Topaz Walker was named top Senior Artist in the North after creating a mask of her grandfather, Reuben LaV picked up ‘Young Artist of the Year’in last year’s PAA exhibition and Isobel W won runner-up in last year's RSA School Awards.
Head of Art Frank says this level of success stems from the students taking a leading role in their projects.
“We are interested in what our students want to create and then help them do that. We’ve seen an increase in numbers of pupils picking art at A Level. More and more of them are opting for art because we don’t believe one size fits all, we offer so many disciplines in 2D and 3D that they get to focus on art they are interested in.”

DNA
Dark. Challenging. Stunning.
David Foster’s production of Dennis Kelly’s DNA was all of the above. Three packed theatre audiences hailed it a triumph and for a cast pared back and bold in their ambition, this was all they had hoped for and more.
At the helm was Ethan W, this year’s Captain of Drama and bringing his years of experience to the fore as he laid the foundations for the overall tone of the piece. Mind you - his inventive use of a shopping bag prop was mesmerising in itself - an one audience member remarked, they couldn’t wait to see what food stuff would appear next.
The ensemble cast were simply amazing. Each role is clearly defined; challenging in its own way and needing the skillful handing this young case had in abundance. From Isla C’s nervy and unpredictable Bryony to Isabella DCT’s sardonic Ricky. Amy A’s Cathy was hypnotically terrifying and the partnership of Dan C and Ivvy Y as Jan and Mark framed the whole production impressively. Alice M, Imogen S, Iona F and Eva DL all impressed with their handling of mature and troubling subject matter but it was Francesca W who left the audience stunned with a performance of such control and integrity it suggested an actor many years older.
The whole performance literally opened with the rash of drums and was laid out against a starkly beautiful theatre set. Praise is due, as always, to the incredible stage crew who run the incredibly complex productions with such efficiency.
Well done to all involved in this bold and brilliant performance.
Strathallan Prep School
Prep School Science Department receives top marks for teaching
Strathallan Prep School’s Science Department has been awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM), recognising the quality of teaching and learning at the Perthshire school.
The Primary Science Quality Mark, which is the only national award that celebrates the quality of primary science teaching, is led by the University of Hertfordshire’s Enterprise and Business Development in collaboration with the Primary Science Teaching Trust.
Clare Angus, Head of Prep School Science, said, “I am extremely proud to announce that the Prep School Science department has been awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark. The journey to achieving this award involved a yearlong process, during which our pupils have been fostering their scientific minds.”
“We’ve been helping our junior pupils appreciate how science is relevant to everyday life through exciting experiments from hatching chickens and making ice cream in class to taking part in environmental workshops and national challenges that push their capacity to learn.”
Strathallan Prep School, which became the first preparatory school in Scotland to join the Pre-Senior Baccalaureate (PSB) in June 2021, further engaged pupils by hosting talks from leading paleontologists, a BP oil engineer, dental students from the University of Glasgow, and an aviculturist from the Wild Wetlands Trust.
Clare added, “Our pupils have had trips to Dundee Science Centre and visited a mobile planetarium, enriching the science they’ve been able to explore. My hope is that they understand that science doesn’t just start when they enter the classroom, it’s all around them wherever they go.”
Associate Professor Jane Turner, PSQMNational Director said, “There was never a more important time for primary children to have a high-quality science education. The Coronavirus pandemic has made everyone aware of the impact of science on our daily lives. Primary schools have an important role to ensure that children understand how science works and keeps us healthy and safe. Schools that have achieved a Primary Science Quality Mark have demonstrated a significant commitment to science teaching and learning, even at this challenging time for schools.”

Scottish Rugby U16 Scottish Schools Cup Final at Murrayfield
The U16 National Cup Final provided a fantastic opportunity for the squad to test themselves against the U16 Conference winners who had beaten them a few weeks earlier in the season.
We came out the blocks playing the possession and territory game that saw us take an early 7-0 lead with a try by Ramsey S, converted by Adam W. Both teams then exchanged tries, with Tom S going over in the right hand corner finishing off a great team try from a lineout. This saw Stewart's Melville head in to half-time 19-12. Ill discipline played its part with too many penalties given away, and a yellow card 5 minutes before the break leading to the Stewart's Melville tries.
Stewart's Melville came out firing in the 2nd half with two fairly quick tries in succession and a penalty kick at goal. We then upped our game and came back in to it with a try from Alex M.
The boys continued to play at pace and keep the ball, which saw Finaly T make a great break down the left wing, only to be tap tackled 10m out from the tryline. The boys never gave up and piled on more pressure which saw Max C drive over the line to score. Ill discipline cost them again towards the end as another yellow card and penalty try saw Stewart's Melville extended their lead to 43-24.
The boys gave their all in the match and never gave in, battling right to the end. They should be proud of their performance on the day and they were a credit to the Strathallan Community.
The journey they have been on since the pre-season tour to Italy has been a very memorable one for them, and this disappointment will only spur them on to continue to work hard and improve as they move into Senior rugby and 1st XV & 2nd XV rugby over the next 2 years.
Thank you to all the supporters from the Strathallan community, which included over 400 pupils, staff, parents & relatives, who came along to support the team. It is greatly appreciated by all the players and coaches of the U16 squad. Thank you to Mr Josh Fraser and all the members of the Pipe Band that added to the atmosphere of the whole experience pre-match.

From Covid hobby to British Horse Vaulting Champion: Eva's taking the reigns
What began as a hobby during national lockdown has become a prize-winning passion for Perthshire pupil Eva S, whose team were named British Vaulting Championships at Bishop Burton in October.
Eva who began horse-vaulting two years ago with the Kinross Vaulting Group, was named Scottish Champion at her second-ever competition last year and the 12-year-old schoolgirl shows no signs of stopping.
“It was amazing to win with the team,” she said. “I was nervous at the start but it was good fun. I’ve never stayed overnight for a two-day competition before.”
“I love horse-vaulting because it’s unusual but you get to put your balance to the test and work together with your horse to put on a performance.”
Eva, who is a pupil at Strathallan Prep School, came 8th individually and 1st in the team event. She said the win has inspired her to plan for next year’s competition season.
She added, “We’ll keep training through the winter and come up with new music and a new freestyle routine for 2023.”
Eva is one of the youngest students in the school’s Equestrian Team, which caters to all kinds of equestrian styles including Show Jumping, Cross Country and Dressage.
Another Shooting Academy student who raised his sights this summer is current Colts Sporting World Champion, Ali T, who represented Scotland at the Home Internationals in Jersey. His team narrowly missed out on first place, missing only 3 clays out of 300.
Isla T shot in The Young Farmer East Clays. She won Ladies High Gun and the team finished second overall. Well done, Isla!!
Congratulations to 4th Form pupil Olivia Doherty, who was selected for the Scotland U15 Netball team in September and who competed at the school games in Loughborough. Congratulation to Olivia on her well deserved selection.
Perthshire pupils compete in Mens Winter County Cup
Strathallan pupils Marcus McL and Jed McM each represented their counties in men’s Winter County Cup.
The competition is one of the biggest tennis events in the UK, with 44 counties throughout the UK, all playing over the same weekend at venues across the country. Over a weekend of tough competition, both players fought hard and the divisions remain unchanged for the year ahead.
For Marcus, the cup represented his senior county debut with the North of Scotland team in Boston, whilst Jed returned to play for South of Scotland in Hull. Both players acknowledged selection as a source of great pride, offering the chance to compete in an event that has played host to some of the biggest names in tennis, from Andy and Jamie Murray to Emma Radacanu.
Marcus, who recorded another win against a world-ranked opponent, said of the experience: “There was a great team atmosphere throughout the weekend and I really enjoyed the environment. It gives me the confidence going forward to know I can compete at that level.”
On the great achievement of remaining undefeated over the weekend, he reflected: “It is something I am proud of, it was a very high standard and again it helps me believe I can step up to that level. I have loved this experience and want to be part of these events going forward… hopefully I can be considered for Summer County Cup 2023!”
For Jed, the Winter Cup was a good contrast to the Summer Cup, in which he also competed: “The main difference between summer and winter county is summer is just doubles and you play 3 matches a day for five days where as winter it’s singles and doubles playing two matches per day. Even in the lowest division you still get people that have played American college tennis and play high level of competition so it’s all very competitive and a great experience for me.”
“The highlight for me is probably winning 3 out of 5 matches for my first winter county I think is pretty good and being in a team environment makes it a lot easier than playing any other tournament. I really enjoyed it.”

Scottish Women & Girls in Sport Week 2022
Strathallan School is proud to celebrate Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week, find out what has been planned this week from our Captain of School Melissa.
Scotland is celebrating Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week from the 3rd to the 9th of October. The increasing media coverage and sponsorship of women's sports means the goal of gender equality is closing in on the touchline. The Birmingham Commonwealth Games saw more medals available for women’s events for the first time highlighting the increasing opportunities for women at elite levels. In addition, the upcoming women’s rugby world cup in New Zealand will be a great opportunity to support the Scottish team which will no doubt further increase the sport’s profile.
The progress seen in women's sports helps to break down harmful stereotypes which discourage women from taking up new sports or seeking progression to a higher level. In many cases being able to see women at various levels of sport will provide encouragement for higher participation rates.
For these reasons, senior girls and staff have collaborated to curate a fun-filled week of sports, lectures and discussion groups. Through these events, our goal is to promote themes of visibility and participation in a relaxed and inclusive environment. Activities such as water polo, boxing and trampolining will allow girls to try new sports with friends.
In addition to hosting a sports session, former Olympic swimmer Hannah Miley MBE will deliver a lecture on the impact of the menstruation cycle on women in sports.
Of course, the promotion of women in sport goes far beyond this week and Strathallan does this as it continues to grow the sports and competitive teams available to girls, as seen by the introduction of a girls rugby team last season alongside fixtures for cricket and squash teams.
We hope to promote participation whether it be competitive or social. Sport is paramount to not only our physical health but our mental well-being too as it provides an outlet from the classroom and an opportunity to expand social groups along with improving self-confidence and skills such as leadership, resilience and teamwork.
- Melissa F-S, Captain of School
