Featured Fife Rugby Stars Selected for Historic U18 Barbarians Match
Two Strathallan School students will represent the School and the Kingdom of Fife this month as they take to the field for the U18 Barbarians Rugby team against Rugby School in a landmark match commemorating the 200th anniversary of the sport’s birth. Stewart P, from Kirkcaldy, said he was over the moon to be selected for the U18 Barbarians side. “It’s an incredible honour to be chosen to represent the Barbarians U18 side,” he said. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to participate in one of the final matches of this historic series.” Stewart, who has been playing rugby for six years, joined Strathallan this year from Kirkcaldy Rugby Club. He reflected on the transformative impact of attending Strathallan. “Joining Strathallan has been a game-changer,” he stated. “The level of rugby I’ve been playing here has been higher than I’ve experienced before, and I’m thrilled to represent the school and Scotland next weekend. I’m determined to give it my all and be the best player I can for the team.” Adam W, from Ceres in Fife, has been an avid rugby player since P3, having started at the age of eight with Howe of Fife Rugby Club. He joined Strathallan in 2021 and has steadily progressed through the ranks, culminating in his instrumental role in leading the U16 XV to the Scottish Schools Final at Murrayfield last year. Now a key player in the 1st XV backfield, Adam said he was thrilled to head to Rugby School for the match on the 9th of December. “This is a rare opportunity for both of us,” he added. “Being selected for the Barbarians means a lot to me. It will be the highest level of rugby I’ve ever played, and I’m genuinely excited to get stuck in.” Celebrating their news, Director of Strathallan’s Rugby Academy, Andrew Henderson, said “It’s fantastic to see two of our Academy Players selected for this unique game, a first I believe for the renowned Barbarian club. Being from Fife myself, it is with immense pride to see wo young Fifers selected.” “I have absolute confidence that Stewart and Adam will give their all in this match, just as they have done throughout the year at school and club level. As Strathallan was graciously invited to join Rugby School for their 200th Anniversary International U18 Sevens in March, it’s wonderful to see more of our rugby stars have the opportunity to showcase their talent at the end of a momentous year for the sport.”

Frank Oakes: Setting the gold standard for half a century
Another new school year begins, and Frank Oakes is hard at work again, fulfilling the role he has performed at Strathallan for fifty years. The signwriter, originally from Stockport, has meticulously painted the names of the school's Captains and Champions by hand since the 1970s - almost half of the school's entire history. What began as a job in the army quickly became a passion for signwriting that took Frank's skills from the sides of tanks to cars, lorries, buildings, and the walls of the Perthshire boarding school for half a century. Now 88 years old, Frank says he still loves every day of his job. “I should be retired really but well, it makes me happy, I’d rather keep doing this than sit at home.” Headmaster of Strathallan, Mark Lauder, said, "There are thousands of names in Gold on our walls thanks to Frank. What a fantastic contribution and service to the school, for many more years too I hope!" Strathallan is about to enter this academic year with the largest school roll ever in its 102-year history. Well known for its academic and extra-curricular excellence, the school is proud to welcome five- and six-year-olds to the Prep School for the first time this September, meaning Frank could be kept busy for years to come keeping up with the names of the school's youngest ever pupils.

And somehow I managed to do really well this season with one of the horses in particular who is called Freya. Sometimes good stuff happens when you least expect it as on the back of this season I've been offered sponsorship and the opportunity to compete next season with a really nice 6 year old horse called Gusto. So I'm really excited for that." 3

In a world where physical activity levels are declining and youth are getting weaker, it is as important as ever to equip our young people with the tools to look after their physical and mental health. Children are not mini adults and as such their training shouldn't be watered down adult training. I thoroughly look forward to helping all of our students develop their athletic motor skill competencies so they may thrive in whatever sports and activity they may wish to do with competence and confidence." 12

With 84% of pupil’s exams passed, well above the national average, Strathallan Headmaster Mark Lauder praised the efforts of this year’s cohort. “The last four years have provided unique and consistent challenges for all students, not least those who picked up results today. We are proud of all of our pupils at Strathallan who have shown great resilience, maturity and dedication as they approached their GCSEs.” “This year group has achieved significant successes outside the classroom too. Beyond a strong set of GCSE results they have shown their passion for music, sport, performing arts, as well as the environment and the welfare of others.” “I hope today’s results reflect their hard work and inspire them to continue to strive in the next chapter of their education at Higher or A-Level.” One Strathallan student elated with her GCSE results today was Eve B, who achieved 7 9’s and 2 8’s. The 16-year-old from Perth said, “I was in shock for at least two minutes. Then came the sense of overwhelming relief as I’d worked so hard for these results. When I went and told my family it was a great moment. I’m so happy!” “My goal is to take five Highers next year with the aim of going to a top university. My teachers helped me so much with lastminute revision sessions and clinics that made a world of a difference.” Receiving his results whilst at pre-season rugby training, Fergus T said, “At first I wasn’t sure how I’d done but I am very happy with the results.” Fergus, who was surrounded by friends when his results came in, said his GCSEs give him confidence for the future. “I plan to take Maths, History, Economics, Chemistry, and Physics next year, all subjects I got 9s in, so it makes me want to work even harder over the next two years.” Another pupil celebrating a slew of top results today was Lucy W. Ella S is delving into the intriguing impact of Coca Powder concentration on the activity of the enzyme lypase, which plays a crucial role in breaking down fats in our bodies. She said, “It's been really fun to create my own experimental and see the results.” Joe T is pursuing the fascinating effects of antiseptics on bacteria, with a particular focus on E. Coli Findlay M is comparing the effectiveness of natural compounds, such as frankincense and essential oils, against bacterial growth. Callum P is exploring the effects of various elements found in local plants on the growth of watercress. And Anni W is investigating the ability of different types of green tea to inhibit an enzyme found in bananas. "Doing it on our own is challenging but fun," Anni said. "It's exciting to be able to design your own experiments and see what you can discover."

Sports Joshua secures U17 British Fencing Championship title
Strathallan School student Joshua B has been named U17 British Fencing Champion after he emerged undefeated at the Championships in Nottingham last month. Already the U15 and U20 Scottish Fencing Champion, Joshua fought his way to the final, to be crowned champion following a 15-12 win over his opponent, solidifying his status as a rising star in the sport. The 15-year-old was the youngest fighter on the podium. However, despite his young age, Joshua has honed his skills through international competition over the last two years. He has recently represented Great Britain in at tournaments in Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland and took to the piste at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships in London last summer. Joshua said that timing was key to his success in Nottingham. He said, “Taking the summer off training allowed me to recover and prepare adequately for the championships. Winning felt amazing, especially in a closely contested final. I maintained my composure and executed the techniques I’ve been practicing.” When he’s not at school, Joshua dedicates himself to training at Salle Ossian Fencing Club in Perth, where he receives invaluable guidance from his coach, Professor Phil Carson. He added, “I’ve learnt so much from Professor Carson and being part of Salle Ossian means a lot to me,” added Joshua. “Heading to the British Championships as a team was a fantastic experience, and sharing the podium with Calum, who secured the Bronze medal, was amazing.” Commenting on the Salle Ossian’s team success, Professor Phil Carson, said, “We put our success down to three things: all kids are talented, they just need the right environment to thrive: nothing works like hard work works: work hard for yourself and harder for others. Joshua and his teammates prove this approach creates amazing fencers, athletes, and young people.” Expressing his admiration for Joshua’s success, Director of Sport at Strathallan School, Jim Thompson, added, “Joshua’s outstanding achievement is a testament to his unwavering dedication and exceptional talent. We are immensely proud of his remarkable journey and eagerly anticipate the bright future that lies ahead for this young champion.” Joshua will next compete in London, Bucharest, Istanbul, Romania, Germany and Barcelona and, he has been selected to compete for Team Scotland in the Cadet Class at the 2024 Commonwealth Fencing Games in New Zealand.

Rugby on exchange
On exchange from St Andrew’s College in South Africa, we are delighted to welcome Oli J who joins our 1st XV Rugby squad this term with his host, Zac G. Zac, who spent 3 and a half months at St Andrew’s College, said his experience was incredible. “It was so good seeing a different culture playing rugby. The passion is on another level out there. 15 thousand people turned out to one of the games on K Day and it’s something I wont forget. I think it’s something we need to replicate here for all school games whatever the sport. When you know you have the whole school standing behind you it makes the whole match a thousand times better.” Now in his third week in Scotland, Oli J said he feels right at home. “There’s a strong rugby culture here and the level is high. I’m playing an age group up but I’m loving it. The levels of fitness and game awareness are great. I love it here and the weather hasn’t been that bad!” Although Scotland will face South Africa in the Rugby World Cup opener this weekend – it’s fantastic to see our rugby family bonds grow stronger.
Grant Corbett
Fantastic to catch up with Grant Corbett, the Captain of our 1st XV from 1982-1983, as our boys represent the School and Scotland at the St Joseph’s National Rugby Festival.
