Welcome to our safe and beautiful island realm! IN ÅLAND, THERE IS SEA in every direction and thousands of islands to explore. Literally – there are roughly 6,700 islands in total. Many visitors have said this, and we wholeheartedly agree – there’s something special about Åland. It’s peaceful and safe, and always close to the sea and nature. AS A DESTINATION, Åland never stands still, particularly now when we are celebrating our 100 years of autonomy. If we look back over everything that has happened since the Parliament of Åland held its first plenary session on 9 June 1922, we find generations of skillful islanders and countless stories about the creative Ålanders, who are constantly evolving and moving forward. We have many treasures and favourite spots that we are proud of and eager to show others. The distances in Åland are also very short, thus allowing you to get around quickly, from the town to the beach, the countryside to the archipelago, not to mention all the recreational activities and sights to be seen. You’ll be able to experience a lot of activities and easily fill your days in Åland making wonderful holiday memories. EVEN THOUGH SUMMER is the highlight of the year, every season has its own charm. Come back again and again to enjoy the changing seasons. From spring meadows covered in white anemones and the vibrant energy of summer days to the tranquillity of autumn and winter. WELCOME TO ÅLAND! We are ready to fill your holiday with beautiful new memories! Lotta Berner-Sjölund Visit Åland

100 years of autonomy. Åland
is the oldest autonomous region in Europe as well as its smallest. Åland was granted autonomous status by the League of Nations in Geneva in 1921. A powerful movement in Åland had campaigned to become part of Sweden, but Finland did not want to let the island realm go. The decision made in Geneva was a compromise.
100 years of willfulness Naturally, we are celebrating this milestone, and we’ll be doing it properly. During 2021-2022, our calendar will be filled with events related to our centenary. Opera, theatre, music, literature, exhibitions, seminars, etc. The list is long. We welcome everyone to join us in the festivities, with special menus and tasty drinks at our restaurants. Don’t miss the chance to buy some of the genuine products made especially for the centenary.
Åland’s Regional Council (today known as the Parliament of Åland), with its 30 members, convened for the first plenary session on 9 June 1922. The Parliament of Åland passes its own legislation in such areas as the economy, education, transportation and health care. The administrative offices of the Government of Åland and Parliament are housed in the Government Office Building, which is located on the market square in Mariehamn. From June 2021 to June 2022, “Åland 100” will be celebrated with an extensive programme of activities.
‘Willfulness’ has been something of a lodestar during our autonomy, and it will continue to be for at least the next 100 years.

Time zone and currency Åland’s currency is the euro and both Åland and Finland are in the Eastern European time zone. When it is 12 noon in Sweden, it is 1:00pm in Åland.
Åland – Islands of Peace Åland has no military or active military bases. Ålanders are exempt from military conscription in the Finnish Defence Forces.
Population What a pleasing development - more and more people want to make Åland their home! Over the past several years, Åland’s population has increased by 200 to 300 people, and the current population has now risen above the 30,000 mark. Nearly 12,000 people live in Mariehamn, Åland’s largest city. The official language in Åland is Swedish. In addition to the 26,000 Ålanders whose mother tongue is Swedish, there are some 68 other languages represented in Åland.
Åland - Islands of Opportunity To get to Åland you’ll need to cross the sea - what will you find when you arrive? Seafarers and boat builders? IT experts and chip manufacturers? Farmers and opera singers? There’s a simple answer: All of the above and then some. Åland is just this diverse. Just as active and modern as it is tranquil and traditional. Åland is a patchwork of islands strewn across the middle of the Baltic sea. It has one city, Mariehamn, and a vibrant countryside. You’ll always be close to the sea, washed by briny sea breezes. Åland is a country in the middle – a mixture of Sweden and Finland seasoned with influences from the time when Åland was part of the Russian Empire. Today, Åland is self-governing and, thanks to its autonomy, able to create a society according to its own needs and conditions. THE ÅLANDERS are an enterprising people. They are used to doing things themselves and relying on their own abilities. But, they never turn away from the world at large, either. They have sailed the seven seas and returned with new ideas and
dreams. In many cases, they also came home with the wherewithal to realise them. IN ÅLAND, tradition and modern thinking go hand in hand. Windmills are restored and midsummer wreaths are made while high-tech companies serve customers all over the world. These two worlds can easily be brought together on such a small scale. THE CLIMATE IS temperate and summers are typically sunny. Åland is said to have the most hours of sunshine in the Nordic countries from May to August. It tends to be windy – usually blowing in from the southwest – and numerous wind turbines provide Åland with green power.
Åland’s original centre is where the village of Långsbergsöda is located today. This is where the very first Ålanders arrived. One might wonder just how they managed to find their way to Åland, which was an expanse of barren islands in the middle of the wide open sea, but the waters surrounding it were rich with seals, fish and sea birds and the first Ålanders were devoted hunters and fishers. IF YOU WOULD LIKE to learn more about Åland, visit the cultural history museum of Åland. A new permanent exhibition presents 7,500 years of Åland history, from the first inhabitants in the stone age to modern-day society.

A myriad of islands in one of the most beautiful archipelagos in the world Åland has so many islands that not even Ålanders have visited them all. To be precise, there are 6,700 islands in total. How many will you be able to reach in a single visit? You can either drive around and explore the island realm on your own or follow a ready-made route. The Åland Archipelago Trail is a popular alternative, which makes exploring Åland all year round a snap, whether you’re travelling by car or bike. If you start in Mariehamn, the Archipelago Trail crosses the main island and heads east into the Åland archipelago. You can choose whether to start on the islands in the northern or southern archipelago. The Åland Archipelago Trail can also be combined with the Archipelago Trail
in Finland, which continues in the Turku archipelago via Osnäs or Galtby. This is also the starting point if you are coming to Åland from the east. TO GET FROM ISLAND TO island, you’ll be taking the inter-island ferries of Ålandstrafiken, which seamlessly transport cars, bikes and passengers. And, to sweeten the deal, you’ll be able to enjoy the sea and so many beautiful views – a ferry passage is an experience all on its own. Ferries run from the main island to inhabited islands
several times a day. Just remember to book a place for your vehicle in good time! EACH ISLAND has its own unique charm. From Brändö in the north, with its bridges and causeways, to the austere island of Kökar, lying at the southernmost point of the Åland archipelago. Stay a day or two before moving on and by all means make the odd detour. That way, you’ll be able to enjoy some extra time by dining out, seeing sights and savouring island life.

Life and energy in a little big city Being close to everything is one of the advantages of living in a small city, and in Mariehamn everything you could possibly need is tucked within just a few blocks. You won’t have to go very far to find shopping, restaurants and cafés, not to mention hotels, pubs and bars. The easiest way to explore Mariehamn is by foot. You can leave your car at home or park it in front of the hotel. Parking is free, but remember to bring along your parking disc. If you don’t have a lot of time or you’ll be heading outside the city centre, you can rent a bicycle. DURING THE DAY, you can do some shopping on pedestrian street Torggatan. Follow this up with some lunch and a glass
of wine in one of the restaurants that will tempt you to return later in the evening with their bars and nightclubs and delicious à la carte offerings. The standard of lunch served in Mariehamn’s restaurants is generally high - and even higher in come dinnertime. Regardless of whether you prefer fine dining or fun dining, you’re in for a real treat. Not only that, you’ll find just about every kind of menu, from Nordic elegance to tapas, shellfish and a touch of Asia.

WHEN EVENING ARRIVES, the pubs, bars and night clubs open their doors, with many offering live bands, DJs and even singer-songwriters. Others tempt their guests with a wide variety of, innovative

FOOD IN THE TOWN CENTRE ENJOY SEAFOOD BY THE PIER
Brasserie Ångbåtsbryggan has a great location in Mariehamn. Just a stone’s throw from the town square, yet at the pier with a nice sea view over the bay and marina in the Eastern Harbour. The restaurant offers a special atmosphere because the walls and the ceiling are made of glass, which gives an illusion of being outdoors when indoors. In late summer and autumn evenings there is extra magic in the air when the natural daylight is shifting into a starry sky. The open kitchen is the heart of the restaurant. You can see the chefs working next to a big stone oven made of local recycled red bricks.
Mariehamn attracts visitors with good food and entertainment. Take a food walk and discover four restaurants with atmosphere, style and variety – everything from great lunches, seafood and à la carte dishes to stone oven baked pizzas. In between you can play adventure golf.

Sittkoffska Gården is a popular meeting point in the middle of Mariehamn. Cosiness, vintage, local raw produce and sustainability are the key words for the restaurant. Take an extra look at the imaginary décor, such as the recycled windows, old pieces of furniture, lush green plants and the gigantic felted elk head. Here you can enjoy genuine homely meals of local raw produce and high quality. Visit also the Farm Store, filled with Åland artisan food products that you can buy home.

Pleasant days in the holiday city of Mariehamn Mariehamn is situated on an isthmus between two bays and is therefore surrounded by water to the east and west. In addition to beautiful views and walking paths, the city’s shorelines beckon for a dip in the sea, a bite to eat in a restaurant, not to mention all manner of recreation and sights. Mariehamn’s eastern side is the place for swimming and sunbathing all day long. Here you’ll find Nabben, with its gently sloping sand beach and charming seaside setting. The sand beach at Lilla holmen is also family-friendly, with its swimming pier, pirate ship, rabbits and peacocks. If you prefer a tiled pool over sand, there are plenty of swimming halls and hotel pools to choose from. THE MARITIME QUARTER is another mustsee part of the city. Among its red-ochre storehouses, you’ll encounter artists, artisans, smiths, boatbuilders, yoga instruc-
tors and pizza makers in a cosy, pleasant little community. The M/S Sunnan II, an excursion boat done up in the style of an old-fashioned steamship, is moored at the quay, ready to set sail. Enjoy a delicious meal while on a cruise through the archipelago. If you are looking for entertainment and fine dining, the city’s many restaurants, cafés and other leisure spots are all located close to each other. Some open the floor for summer dancing, while others offer a round of adventure golf. Two kilometres to the west and a lovely walk through Mariehamn’s lush avenue of lin-
den trees, you’ll find the city’s western harbour, with its restaurants and outdoor terraces awash in the bright evening sun. TAKE THE SHORELINE promenade up to Badhusberget Hill to get a bird’s eye view of Mariehamn. Or play a round of disc golf at Badhusparken. The western harbour is also home to the pride of Mariehamn, the Pommern, which was built in 1903 and is the only sailing ship in the world in its original condition. Combine a visit to the Pommern with the Maritime Museum for a deeper dive into the impressive maritime history of Åland.

Welcome to the Maritime Quarter! WHAT’S ON IN THE
Maritime Quarter The Maritime Quarter is not just another lovely part of the city, but the setting for many events during the year. This is the place where spring is ushered in at the Tar Market in April and the popular Åland Sea Days is held in July. The Åland Harvest Festival is held in September and in December, naturally, it’s time for the Christmas Market.
MARITIME QUARTER – Åland’s arts and crafts centre, with museums, a wooden boat yard and shipbuilding Here you’ll find a living maritime milieu, with boat building, a forge and other handicrafts, not to mention a harbour for traditional schooners and wooden boats. The Maritime Quarter has a Ship and Boat building Museum and Museum of historical marine engines. You can wander among wooden boats, boathouses and storehouses, or take a peek in the Seafarers’ chapel. The centre’s activities are supported by the City of Mariehamn and Åland Cultural Delegation.
Åland is building a new schooner – EMELIA The schooner Emelia will be over 25 metres in length and built using old shipbuilding traditions in the Maritime Quarter within walking distance of the Mariehamn city centre. Her launch is planned for 2024 during the Tall Ships Races. Emelia will replace the schooner Albanus and, like her predecessor, she will be used for youth programmes as well as tourist excursions.

What is there hiding in the depths of the sea? Come and say hello to the giant squid, sea serpent, bloody sea cucumber, sea bishop and other mythical sea creatures at the “Sea Monsters” exhibition, which will be opening at the Åland Maritime Museum. Once upon a time, humans believed that the world was flat and the sea was filled with all manner of sea monsters. For example, in 1539, when Archbishop Olaus Magnus drafted his Carta Marina map of the Nordic and Baltic countries. The map showed not only islands and the sea, but also real and imaginary creatures. The Carta Marina is the basis for the Sea Monsters exhibition, which will take you on a voyage of discovery among all the creatures of the deep. TOGETHER WITH PLAYWRIGHT and children’s book author, Laura Ruohonen, and illustrator, Erika Kallasmaa, you’ll go on a hair-raising journey to hitherto unknown worlds. You’ll learn about the mythical creatures of the sea in poems and illustrations. The result is an exciting exhibition with enormous monsters and amusing rhymes. Titillating and just the right amount of creepy. You’ll be able to read, listen, touch and even hug - if you dare! Even though the exhibition is aimed at children, it is so informative that the whole family will enjoy it. The massive plush monsters are accompanied by facts and explanations about how people saw the world around them in the Middle Ages. ALSO WORTH SEEING is the Maritime Museum’s main exhibition, which now has a newly renovated Cabinet of Curiosities, filled with exotic souvenirs brought home by seafarers. The museum also has a unique pirate flag, one of only two genuine pirate flags in the entire world. Kids love the “Ruby and the Sea” activity room. From May to September, you can climb aboard the sailing ship Pommern and follow a fictional 100-day aroundthe-world voyage.

ANYTHING YOU CAN DO ON or in the water you can do in Åland, and watersports such as surfing, kitesurfing and jet skiing are popular activities. You can bring along your own gear or rent it at your destination. Come winter, just lace up a pair of long-distance skates and head out across the frozen expanses. If the winter is a good one, the season will be long. Lakes freeze up first, followed by bays, and then you’ll be able to glide out over the magical, frozen open sea. The diversity of nature and ability to quickly move from bay to peaceful bay and across wide open ice are also part of the appeal. FORESTS AND NATURE are an experience unto themselves. You can actually plop yourself down on any log or rock you find, simply sit back and enjoy the show. You can even take a “forest bath”! If you’re a bit more on the active side, you can experience nature by taking a stroll on a nature path or trekking on a longer hiking trail. Forest terrain and a horse or mountain bike will get you moving and a give you a healthy dose of fresh air. There is no shortage of forest roads and trails for active horseback riders and cyclists to choose from. The Eckerö mountain bike trail includes a three-kilometre long beginner section with beautiful views and exciting jumps. Bikers who want to challenge themselves can try to beat the trail record using the Strava training app.

Sea views and world-class greens In the summer of 2020, Åland’s most popular golf course, Slottsbanan, reopened after a comprehensive renovation. The result is a very highly regarded course with even more seafront space. Slottbanan is praised by golfers for its beautiful stretches along the Slottssundet sound, where you can enjoy stunning sea views from all 18 holes. After being open for two seasons, it’s fairly clear that the course maintains its high standards. Particularly the greens, which are of the highest European class. And, it’s not just the golfers who rank Slottsbanan so high. The Ladies European Tour, which is the second highest international women’s tour in the world, also sees the course’s potential and has chosen to
host one of the tournaments in Åland in the beginning of September 2022. Some 120 international professional women golfers will gather at Ålands Golfklubb to compete on the Slottsbanan course, an event that is expected to draw a big audience. GOLF IS A SPORT that is increasing in popularity, and Ålands Golfklubb welcomes a large number of satisfied golfers each year. One tip is to plan well ahead and book the tee times for the entire year.
In addition to Slottsbanan, Åland also has Kungsbanan, a beautiful 18-hole course with forested grounds. The Prinsessan short hole course, with its six par 3 holes, is perfect for anyone wanting to give golf a try or work on their technique. YOU CAN FIND even more beautiful greens and fairways at Eckerö Golf on the west coast of Åland. Golfers of every skill level enjoy it here thanks to the four tees on the club’s 18-hole course. This gives everyone the chance to finish holes on their handicap. The first nine holes of the course are a bit easier, while the last nine are longer and more challenging.

Voracious pike and trendy perch Hire a fishing guide for one day or several! You’ll then be ready to make some of the biggest catches on your own - if that’s what you want. In many cases, you’ll have so much fun in the boat that you’ll prefer fishing together with others. Åland’s fishing guides often receive praise, both on Facebook and by email, from guests who are so pleased with their fishing trip that they often come back for more and more. Actually, this is not very surprising. The guides are active sport fishers, whose work is their passion all year round. It is a good concept, without any extra bells and whistles: it merely gives the guests the experiences they’ve come for. That’s precisely why you’ll always be well taken care of. Fishing guides provide both tackle and knowledge. They have sturdy, well-equipped boats and know just where the fish are biting. You won’t even have to worry about meals, either. When your stomach starts growling, the guide will simply lay out a tasty spread of food and drink. ÅLAND IS A FISHING PARADISE all year round, with excellent fishing and the unparalleled natural beauty of the archipelago. Perch fishing is constantly gaining in popularity. According to the fishing guides, it is currently something of a trend to fish for perch with rigs other than just a spinner and jig. Another speciality is the tough and agile pike. You can fish pike with both spinners and flies in many places throughout Åland. And, for a little variety, you can also fish for pike-perch and sea trout. Åland has beautiful lowland shorelines facing the open sea that are tailor-made for fly fishing, whether from the shore or on a float. In the winter, when the ice has set, anglers can pack their jigs and thermos and head out for a spot of ice fishing. YOU CAN EASILY BOOK a package deal, including transport, accommodations and guided fishing. Or, you can simply hire yourself a boat, get a fishing permit and head out on your own without a guide.
Fishing permits online! The waters surrounding Åland are divided into several large and small fishing permit areas. All visiting anglers must have a valid fishing permit.

Fun ideas and inspiring concoctions Ålanders are creative jacks-of-all-trades and, in the area surrounding the Stallhagen brewery and Strandpensionat Stalldalen hotel in Grelsby, you’ll find many examples of Ålander ingenuity. Founded in 2004, Stallhagen, which is renowned for its handcrafted beers and popular gastropub, now offers curious visitors yet another reason to visit - its geodesic dome. The dome, which consists of 180 hexagons, 1,620 wooden bars, 14,040 galvanised bolts and untold working hours, is a hemipsheric construction that is not only impressive to behold, but also extends the season by sealing out the weather. The dome is the perfect venue for weddings, parties and other events for anyone wanting something different, not to mention lovely to look at! Stallhalla, an outdoor amphitheatre with a stage that floats on the pond next to the brewery, is a sight in itself. This is a venue that does it all. Everything from theatre and opera performances to rock festivals has graced this stage in its enchanting setting. IF YOU WANT EAT AND DRINK to your heart’s content at Stallhagen, we recommend staying at the Strandpensionat Stalldalen hotel, which is just 1.5 kilometres away. Here, an abandoned mental hospital has been converted into a charming place to stay, which is now known for its comfy beds and delicious Åland breakfast. The hospital was built before breakthroughs in medicine were made, and the site was very carefully chosen to offer patients the best possible recovery. Even though parts of the rustic buildings are still under renovation, the seaside hotel is already a desirable getaway for guests, who will happily return to enjoy the peaceful setting. The hotel has its own beach, a hot tub and a floating sauna. There is also a chapel, pergola garden and bakery café in the area.

– and utterly addictive!
Choose Åland for training or competition! The landscape is full of natural obstacles and is made for everyone who loves to push the envelope – both physically and mentally.
Åland Swim Run is a challenge that demands true grit, particularly in the classes geared toward experienced athletes. The courses in the outer archipelago cross islands and open water through a landscape that has everything from waves and wind to slippery rocks. Not to mention beautiful views. Fortunately, there are also classes for ordinary fitness buffs who want to test their limits. But, don’t be fooled - the shorter, easier courses are not to be taken lightly, either. ROAD CYCLISTS SAY that Åland is the Mallorca of the North, but better! This is due to lighter traffic combined with ideal roads and beautiful natural surroundings. Welcome to the Åland Hunting and Fishing Museum! The Åland Hunting and Fishing Museum sits on the red rocks of Käringsund, surrounded by the natural beauty and historic milieu of the fishing village. Designed by architect Folke Wickström, the wooden museum building resembles a cluster of boathouses. Inside the museum, the hunting and fishing implements and fauna tell the story of life in the Åland archipelago, nature and culture of yesterday, today and tomorrow. A MUSEUM FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY! The main museum exhibition presents the nature, hunting and fishing culture of Åland. The museum focuses on various types of fishing, spring bird hunting, seal hunting and boats. There is also an exhibition displaying trophies and weapons. Kids love the Children’s Herring Market and the whole family can take a trivia walk together or play our Trout Route game! We also still have our pearl dig, which has been part of the museum since it first opened! During the summer, we put on 1–3 different summer exhibitions, which deal with nature, fishing or hunting. The exhibitions can consist of photographs, artwork, sculpture or trophies. Open during the summer season. Improve your game with a sporting adventure Åland has invested heavily in sports and has numerous sports facilities located throughout the island province. It also has a large number of athletes and active organisations that are eager to take part in a practice game. It’s almost difficult to find a sport that can’t be played indoors in Åland. Floor hockey, volleyball, basketball, table tennis and futsal can be played in any of the seven multisport arenas that are found throughout Åland. Allhallen in Eckerö is big enough to fit a full-size football pitch! Then, there are several speciality facilities for tennis, badminton, ice hockey, curling, bowling, judo and other martial arts. Last summer saw the opening of a new type of hall - a padel court centre. Vikingahallen in Jomala boasts its own squash court.
ÅLAND HAS SEVERAL outdoor football pitches - some with artificial turf and some that are open all year round. A new, fully-equipped track and field arena will be opening in south Mariehamn before the start of the next season. The arena offers world-class facilities, with its fast-running Mondotracks. Also new is the Icelandic horse track at Ålandstravet Trotting Track, which is so beautifully constructed that Åland will host the Nordic Championships for Icelandic Horses in 2022. In addition to these, a new state-of-the-art hall dedicated to
gymnastics will be built in 2022. Its inauguration is planned for the autumn. AND WHAT’S MORE - all of these facilities have plenty of free hours available! Keep that in mind the next time your organisation is planning a training camp. A sporting mini-adventure awaits in Åland. Greetings from the Middle Ages What tales might you tell if you were a castle from the 1300s? You would probably never run out of stories to share! You can hear some of these when visiting the well-preserved ruins of Kastleholm Castle. The castle enjoyed its golden age during the reign of Gustav I (Vasa) and his sons. This was the place where, for example, Erik XIV was imprisoned together with his wife Karin Månsdotter. The Jan Karlsgården open-air museum, with its old buildings from all over Åland, is located behind the castle. Even more stories about the days of yore are waiting to be told among the creaking floors and old rocking chairs.

Åland has always been a strategically important point in the Baltic region. Even today, we can find traces of exciting periods scattered throughout Åland - everything from Russian fortifications and coastal batteries to stately customs houses. After the Finnish War (1808-1809), Åland and Finland went from being part of Sweden to being absorbed by the Russian Empire. Åland also became the westernmost outpost of the Russian Empire, which posted a regiment here. But, this was not
ÅL A N D T R AV E L M A GAZ INE 2022
enough – the Russians wanted a proper coastal fortress. Construction on the impressively planned fortifications were begun in Bomarsund in 1830. The civilian population also grew, making Bomarsund an economic and political centre.
41
However, the fortress was never completed as it was destroyed by French and British forces during the Crimean War in 1854, an event that eventually led to today’s demilitarised Åland. The fortress ruins have long been a popular attraction and, this year, they are extremely topical. The Bomarsund visitor centre is opening this summer, with completely new exhibits and visitor experiences.

You can find more remains of Russian wartime fortifications at Kungsö and Sålis. The Russian coastal artillery extended its defence line during the First World War by installing four coastal batteries in Åland in 1916-1918. The batteries were then destroyed by Swedish forces in 1919. Even though much of the fortifications has been destroyed, you can still visit the barracks area of two batteries and hike along sections of the stone-paved Russian military roads. toms House from 1828. The stately building was designed by architects Carl Ludvig Engel and Carlo Bassi in the Empire style. Despite the fact that the Post and Customs House served as the Russian Empire’s border station at the Swedish border, it was not razed when the war ended. The building is closely linked to the Old Post Road across the Sea of Åland and functioned as the residence and workplace for postal and customs officers. It also served as a quarantine hospital during cholera outbreaks in 1834 and 1848, it had a telegraph station from 1882 to 1900, and it housed Russian soldiers during the First

World War and Finnish soldiers during the Second World War. Today, the Government of Åland welcomes visiting artists to stay in its Artist in Residence flat. You can also visit the seasonal design and handicrafts exhibition as well as Kafé Kalesch. IF YOU WANT TO DELVE a bit further back in Åland’s history, a visit to the Cultural History Museum of Åland in Mariehamn is in order. Did you know that the first Ålanders arrived here 5,500 years before the Common Era?

Welcome to the Middle Ages and Kastelholm Castle Completed in the 1380s, Kastelholm Castle is Åland’s only medieval castle. It is situated in a naturally beautiful setting, standing majestically remote at the foot of the Slottssundet sound. The golden age of the castle came about due to King Gustav I of Sweden and the role it played as part of the Swedish realm. However, the castle later declined in importance, eventually falling into ruin. Today, Kastelholm Castle has been restored to its former glory and is open as a living museum from spring to autumn. An exciting array of family activities, guided history tours, theatre productions and concerts bring in visitors from near and far.

Vita Björn – A positively captivating museum When the Vita Björn Crown remand prison was closed in 1975, so ended the centurieslong remand and prison tradition in the Kastelholm area. Today, the building serves as a prison museum, where you can learn about the evolution of incarceration, from the late 1700s all the way to 1950. From a time where chains and shackles were part of the prisoner’s everyday life to a more humane treatment of those behind bars. The Vita Björn Prison building is the oldest one of its kind in Finland and was opened as the first official prison museum in the country.

Together, they offer the visitor a wide-ranging look into the building and farming culture of Åland, presenting the settings in which Ålanders lived and worked once upon a time. One-of-a-kind gems to explore Lodgings that are more than just cosy rooms with comfortable beds and a restaurant that does more than just serve delicious food and drink - guests are treated to a complete experience. You can find all of these things all over Åland. We’d like to present three of them here. In the archipelago village of Degerby, Danish-Ålander couple Ebbe and Johanna Delfs have given a stately captain’s villa from 1912 a new lease on life as a charming seaside hotel, Carlsro. Here, the Danish concept of “hygge” meets the serenity of Åland, resulting in an inescapably charming atmosphere that will take you back to the carefree days of a seaside resort at the last turn of the century. The hotel’s five unique rooms have names, such as Verdandi and Sölve, and you can take a morning dip off the hotel’s swimming pier. You’ll also find sunchairs and a seaside sauna. The restaurant is also a popular gathering place, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. This is also a place where Denmark meets Åland: What would you say to a classic Danish smørrebrød (open-faced sandwich) with perch sautéed in butter? The hotel’s contemporary delicatessen is also worth a visit.

IF YOU DRIVE WEST through the countryside you’ll find your way to Björnhofvda Gård, a little family-owned hotel at the end of the road that brings to mind an English manor estate. The decor is described as cosmopolitan, colonial and timeless. Here, you’ll be warmly welcomed by Hans and Jackie Lindmark, the resident hosts who enjoy socialising with their guests. The atmosphere is so welcoming that you will want to kick off your shoes as soon as you walk through the door and sink into a cosy armchair in front of the fire. Quality over quantity is the driving philosophy here, and it also shows in the kitchen, where the food speaks for itself. The success lies in well prepared dishes, which are made with care, cooking happily on the stove all day long. This year, there are plans to augment the hotel’s wine cellar with its own importing of fine wines.

YOU’LL DISCOVER AN EYE for detail and extensive knowledge of delicious drinks at Kvarnbo Pensionat guest house, which combines the atmosphere of a 19th century salon with culinary wine tastings in a rustic “winesmith” shop. Kvarnbo Pensionat is also run by an engaging, charismatic couple, who founded the hotel in the old family farmstead. Ella Grüssner Cromwell-Morgan is a musical expert in drinks and shares a passion for motorcycles with her husband, Martin. Together, they have visited many of the vineyards represented at their tastings, and enjoy sharing little anecdotes to enhance the entire drinking experience. Art gallery Galleri Skarpans is also located on the grounds.

Nature’s treasures Come spring, come autumn, you’ll find folk festivals out in the countryside, where farmers and producers will welcome you to their farms during the Åland in Greenery festival and Åland Harvest Festival. You can start by tasting the tender firstlings in May and then buy jams, juices, cheeses and freshly harvested produce in September.
From spring sowing to autumn harvest Åland has a favourable climate for budding farmers and growing producers. And, the ground is not the only place things are growing. Just like the apples, onions and potatoes, fresh new ideas are sprouting everywhere. Growers appreciate the summers with lots of extra hours of sun and the long, mild autumns. Åland is currently Finland’s largest apple grower - three out of every four domestic apples are grown in Åland. In addition to this, 30% of all Finnish onions and 90% of all asparagus come from Åland. The super-berry, sea buckthorn, also thrives along the coasts. WITH SUCH AN ABUNDANCE of outstanding raw ingredients, it’s no surprise that artisanal foods are flourishing. There’s no shortage of local food and drink to fill both glass and plate. Many farms refine their own raw ingredients. Milk is used to make cheese, meats are used to produce
delicious sausages and organically grown grains are milled into meals. Apple growers such as Grannas, Snäckö Frukt and Öfvergårds have refined their ability to make use of the entire harvest by producing fresh-pressed apple juice, chutney and pickled “äppelskott” (unripe windfall apples). At Öfvergårds, you can even go on an “apple safari”, where you hire your own apple tree, thus taking the self-pick concept to a whole new level. Amalias Limonadfabrik and Peders Aplagård transform fruits and berries into sparkling, non-alcoholic ciders, while the Open Water Brewery brews beers and ciders with an alcohol content.
SOME FOOD PRODUCERS welcome visitors to their farm shops or offer guided tours, while others sell their products in supermarkets or handicrafts shops. There are several taste experiences to be had in the area surrounding Kastelholm Castle. In addition to Smakbyn’s restaurant, you’ll find the Åland Distillery, Rosteriverket coffee roastery and Karamelleriet confectioners, which succeeded in capturing the flavour of wild strawberries in its Ålandskaramell candy.

Both form and function There’s something about islands and creative people that just go together. It’s hard to say whether it might be nature, the light or island life in general. Regardless of the reason why, it’s definitely a good thing for Åland. Like Åland’s society and culture in general, traditional Ålandic handicrafts are a wonderful fusion of Finnish and Swedish. In practice, this means the handicrafts are a bit more decorative and ornamental than those found on the Finnish mainland, but not nearly so elaborate as Swedish handicrafts. Modern arts and crafts, however, are more difficult to define, because today’s makers draw their influences from all over the world. Nature is a recurring theme, and nautical motifs have always been typical of Åland. Older handicrafts have also taken their inspiration from the maritime realm. For example, textiles and clothing might have been influenced by fashions in America or England.
DURING THE 1980S, ceramics and pottery gained in popularity thanks to the influences of imported products. At the same time, the Association of Arts and Crafts in the Aland Islands in Finland began working to increase the value of handicrafts and the status of craftspeople and artisans. In addition to the fact that arts and crafts are popular and practical souvenirs, they are also highly regarded by Ålanders, who readily buy them as gifts or even for themselves. HANDCRAFTED TEXTILES are most common today, with everything from needlework, weaving and knitting to felting and textile printing. There is generally a wide
range of techniques used by Åland’s many professional craftspeople and artisans. From potters, goldsmiths and glass artists to cobblers, cabinetmakers, saddle makers and countless jacks-of-all-trades. WOMEN DOMINATE Åland’s arts and crafts scene. One example, located in the Maritime Quarter, is SALT, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary with an exhibition at the Eckerö Post & Customs House. All current and past members of the crafts house are participating. You can also see this year’s handicrafts exhibition, which has precious and base metal pieces on display.

An impressive array of art Åland’s location in the middle of the Baltic Sea has naturally influenced its art. When living on an island, the sea is ever-present, and depictions of nature are often recurring. Åland’s close proximity to the coasts of Sweden and Finland is also tangible. It began with fresco painting in Åland’s medieval stone churches and continued with folk art, portraits of ships and plein air painting during the 1800s. One of Åland’s most well-known artists in the 19th century was Karl Emanuel Jansson (1846-74), who painted the beloved portrait A Peasant Bride from Åland (Åländsk bondbrud). In Önningeby, Åland’s answer to the Skagen Painters formed around Turku artist Victor Westerholm (1860-1919). His summer retreat was a gathering place for artists, such as Hanna Rönnberg, J.A.G. Acke and Edvard Westman, to come and paint together. IN 1953, the Åland Art Association was founded, with its mission being to “kin-
dle and deepen interest in the visual arts in Åland”. Mission well accomplished. Although nature remained an important motif, it was now joined by influences of Cubism, Expressionism and Concretism. Some of the higher profile artists include Nils Byman (1906-96), Hildur Stenbäck (1912-98), Henrik Nylund (1945-1982), Nanna Sjöström (1949-2018) and Guy Frisk (b. 1934). The Åland Art Association also laid the groundwork for the Åland Art Museum, which opened in 1963. Today, the museum has over 1,300 works with connections to Åland in its collections. PAINTING IS STILL the leading medium today, but you will also encounter new media and other forms of artistic expres-
sion. Art is critical of modern society, with artists willing to take a stand and highlight topical issues. You will see some of these in the Art Museum’s summer exhibition, IN YOUR FACE, where six women artists who are in some way connected with Åland display everything from paintings to video. A wide-ranging array that also characterises today’s working artists. EACH YEAR, artists welcome visitors to their studios during Konstrundan, which is an event that is sure to be of interest, with its fascinating encounters and discussions. Many artists also receive visitors upon arrangement.

in Sweden and one in Finland, it seems only natural that journalist, author and programme host Mark Levengood has also set some roots down in Åland. Namely, his family’s summer place, where he spent all of his childhood summers. In an interview with Levengood in the 28 July 2021 issue of Ålandstidningen magazine, he said: “Summer in Åland is the real summer. The right flowers are in bloom and the granite is just the right colour.”

Last year, she became the fastest woman in the world, by finishing with a top speed of 346.9 km/h at 400 metres.

A creative Renaissance man and, naturally, a proud Ålander! In addition to being a chef, Michael Björklund--who is mostly known as Micke in Åland--is also an entrepreneur, restauranteur, author and mentor. When he’s not bustling from pot to pot at his home base, Smakbyn, he helps his chefs and colleagues Simon Selin and Mattias Åhman with his fine dining restaurant, Hejm in Vaasa. Or, in keeping with the spirit of a hard-working Ålander, he opened not just one, but two restaurants in the venerable Stockmann department store in Helsinki, right in the middle of a pandemic. Always with a smile on his face and endless gratitude for being able to live and work in Åland. “Åland is the best in every way! I was so lucky to grow up and evolve as a person

with all the opportunities we have here. We have an outstanding school, public health care that is more like private care, and we’re so close to our decision-makers that we can actually contact them personally. We would never have been able to make something like Smakbyn anywhere else but in Åland. “The only possible downside is that we have it too good, which is actually a pretty good thing!” BJÖRKLUND HAS LONG been a dedicated representative for Åland, such as through his involvement in various school tours and television productions. During the celebration of Swedish Heritage Day (Svenska Dagen) in the autumn of 2021, the

Swedish Assembly of Finland (Folktinget) recognised his contributions by appointing him the Ambassador of Åland, a one-time award granted in honour of Åland’s centenary. When asked what his favourite spot in Åland is, his answer is immediate and unequivocal: “My sauna!” He adds that everyone is very welcome, also highlighting the Åland archipelago as an unforgettable destination. “Just hop on a ferry and head out to savour pristine, utterly beautiful nature. Otherwise, a culinary journey to Åland is always sure to please. We have so many amazing restaurants and producers to visit. All year round!”

Living on an island leaves its mark. Just like the crooked dwarf pines, lashed by the rough seas north of Åland, we islanders have had to adapt to our environment. Those durable little trees belong to the same family as the tallest pine in the forest; they have just adapted to different conditions. Those of us who live surrounded by the sea have a deep-rooted will to forge our own path and do things in our own way. To proudly shoulder the role of being grand in word, though small in the world; a gnarly, hardy, free and somewhat wild willfulness. Willfulness to us, means raising a voice for peace in a world filled with conflict. To see the sea as a pathway instead of a border. Willfulness to us, is turning a classic hunting tower into a sculpture, breeding our own species of sheep and having our own flag. Willfulness to us, means all of this and much more... The Ålandic willfulness has been our lifeblood for much longer than a hundred years; we had just never celebrated it properly before. We celebrate for an entire year, beginning on 9 June, 2021.

Celebrate with us! So far, the anniversary year has been filled with several exciting events – but the celebration is not over yet! Among the events to come is the musical Ålandskungen, a music and dance festival, the Ålandic flag day, Fanny monologue, the opening of the Bomarsund visitor center, the 100th birthday party that lasts for four days 9-12th June 2022, and so much more… Read more: www.aland100.ax

Landing a dream job in Mariehamn Mariehamn is the smallest metropolis in the Nordic countries and Åland’s only town. Here, nature and the sea are always close by, as are the big cities all around it. When your job, house, day care centre, school and leisure activities are all within walking or biking distance, you’ll have much more free time at your disposal. After 26 years of living in a hectic urban environment, Evelina Grandell Rosenlund wanted a life closer to nature. “I grew up in Eastern Finland, so nature has always been really important to me,” explains Evelina. “I come from the Saimaa region, where there is just as much water as there is land. I think that’s why I was looking for a place close to the sea.”

The fact that it ended up being Mariehamn and Åland was no coincidence. As a young adult, stedt Evelina spent several summers in Åland, and she appreciated the and safe island community. n. modern With family and friends in both Finland and Sweden, the idea to settle somewhere in between began to take shape.
”In Mariehamn everything is close by and safe” Evelina moved from Stockholm to Mariehamn. for a Head of Elderly Care. With several years of experience as head of elderly care in the Enskede-ÅrstaVantör district of Stockholm, Evelina knew the position was a perfect fit for her. Mariehamn’s elderly care services employs a staff of approximately 180. Elderly care involves preventive work, home care services and housing services. As a relatively new Head of Elderly Care for the Town of Mariehamn, Evelina sees many opportunities for development, such as increasing the use of welfare technologies. She has already initiated a programme of change, which will address partner competences and enhance the quality of life of the elderly. Paradise for families with children It has been easy to put roots down in Mariehamn. After living in a flat for a while, Evelina bought a house near the water, which is just under a 15-minute walk from her job. “I can wholeheartedly recommend Mariehamn, particularly for families with children,” says Evelina. “Here, everything is close by, safe and the elementary school is outstanding! And I can almost guarantee that anyone with qualifications in care services who is interested in development and improvement will be able to find a job with us!”

Biking in Åland Åland is a pleasant place for biking, with lovely sceneries and many places of interest. In order for you to have a safe and nice bicycle trip, here is some advice on what you as a cyclist should know. Did you know that the bike is a vehicle and its rider a driver? Thus, the same rules apply for bicycles as for other vehicles. Right-hand traffic applies for cyclists on roads and on cycle paths too. As a driver of a vehicle you must observe right of way for vehicles approaching from the right. This doesn’t mean you can simply charge ahead into an intersecting roadway without looking. You have to exercise the care that circumstances demand. This is all about interaction with other people and respect for agreements and rules of traffic. For your own safety you need to pay attention in every situtation even if you have the right of way. Please remember only children under 12 years of age can ride a bicycle on the sidewalk. Cyclists can travel side by side only when this can be done without danger, and not at all on sidewalks. Bicycles with more than two wheels, as well as mopeds, can’t be driven side by side with another bicycle or moped at all.
Don´t forget your helmet, it´s a cheap life insurance!
Sign well in advance when making a turn, look behind you and make sure you can turn without risk. A safe bicycle is equipped with a bell, working brakes, white reflector in front, red in back, orange spoke reflectors (2 pcs) and lamp back and front. Use a reflective vest while biking to make sure you’re visible at a distance. Last but not least, don’t forget your helmet, it’s a cheap life insurance!
Road signs to be aware of Walkway This is a walkway, biking not allowed. Walkway/cycle path This path is divided into one part for pedestrians and one for cyclists. The symbols on the sign tell you which part is meant for which category. Right of way Cyclists entering a road area from a cycle path must observe right of way. This means that you lower your speed in time or stop, and you can only continue when there is no traffic with right of way. NB! As a cyclist you must always observe right of way, even when the crossing is marked in white for cyclists.
We wish you a safe and pleasant bike ride on Åland
Stop sign All vehicles must stop at this sign, this also includes bicycles. Pedestrian crossing All vehicles, including bicycles, must let pedestrians cross. At a crossing with no marking in white for cyclists, you should walk your bicycle across. Bicycle path The sign indicates distance to a location along the bicycle path. Bicycle crossing When you are crossing a road via a bicycle crossing, you must give way to crossing traffic.
How would you like to stay in Åland? Some want to stay in the middle of Mariehamn and enjoy everything the city has to offer. Others want to head out into nature, with the sea beside them and a starry sky above. What would you and your travelling companions prefer?
More sustainable with Green Key Many hotels, restaurants and other businesses in Åland are certified to display the Green Key label. This shows that the business is committed to the sustainable use of resources and constantly works to reduce its environmental impact. www.visitaland.com/greenkey
Is your main reason for visiting Åland to experience peace and quiet? Do you dream of waking up and strolling down to the beach for a morning dip, followed by breakfast on the porch? THEN, A COTTAGE STAY is for you, and there is a wide range of alternatives available. There are cottage “villages”, which have multiple cottages in a given area, or single, standalone cottages. The former is for anyone wanting to socialise with their neighbours. The latter is for those who want peace and solitude, possibly even on an island all to themselves. In order to ensure that you find just what you’re looking for, check out the services offered, such as access to a rowboat, bicycles, canoes, meals and shops. There are cottages located throughout Åland. If you choose a cottage on one of the islands in the archipelago – Föglö, Kumlinge, Brändö, Sottunga or Kökar – you will be taking one of the inter-island ferries from the main island. The trip can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two and a half hours, depending on the island you have chosen. There are also guesthouses and hotels in the countryside. IN MARIEHAMN, you’ll always be close to shopping and entertainment as well as to the nearest beaches. There is no shortage of hotels, guesthouses and cottages to choose from, all within walking distance of the city sights. And don’t forget – wherever you are staying on the main island, the distances are short and you’ll be able to drive quickly to any of åland’s sights and activities. You can stay in Mariehamn even if you want to go fishing or golfing – and vice versa. You can also stay on the coast, even if you want to go shopping and visit museums. CAN’T DECIDE? Read more about guest harbours in Åland: www.visitaland.com
The Åland archipelago is best experienced under your own sail Karlby is one of Åland’s popular guest harbours. The setting is truly pleasant - you’ll land in a safe harbour sheltered from all winds when arriving from the sea that surrounds Kökar. A rejuvenating sauna and delicious meal await at the Brudhäll archipelago hotel. Many choose to come to Åland in their own boat. Visitors coming from the east will pass through an endless realm of islands. Those coming from the west will cross the Sea of Åland, which is large enough that you won’t see any land when you reach the halfway point. THE ÅLAND ARCHIPELAGO is a paradise for boaters. The nature here is without compare and there are countless routes to choose from. Fairways are rarely crowded, and guest harbours can be found in just about every corner of Åland. Circumnavigating the main island is one of many popular alternatives.
FEW PASS UP A STOP at Mariehamn, which has two popular guest harbours – MSF (Mariehamns seglarförening) on the east side and ÅSS (Åländska Segelsällskapet) on the west. Other harbours vary about as widely as they possibly can. At Havsvidden in north Åland, you’ll find yourself tucked up in front of the open sea, while at Kastelholm you’ll be moored in the middle of Åland’s cultural landscape. THERE ARE SEVERAL guest harbours in the archipelago to the east of the main island. Here, you can hire a bicycle after mooring your boat and head out to explore an Ålandic archipelago village.
The fishing village of Karlby is one of three harbours on Kökar of historical interest. In the Middle Ages, King Valdemar’s passage ran through Kökar, which was an important stop for crossings to and from Reval, which is today known as Tallinn. A Bronze Age settlement and the ruins of a Franciscan monastery are some of the sights to see here. Book yourself and your companions a wonderful experience in an architect-designed two-level sauna and its accompanying jacuzzi.
