Embracing the Fall Season and Supporting Our Local Economy

Dear Readers,

As the vibrant colors of autumn begin to paint our landscape, the air turns crisp, and football games fill our weekends, it’s clear that fall has arrived. This season brings with it a sense of renewal and a chance to reflect on the year as it winds down. While we enjoy the beauty and traditions of fall, it’s also an opportune time to focus on something equally important—supporting our local economy.

Local businesses are the heartbeat of our community, much like the changing leaves and cooler weather are the heartbeat of fall. These businesses, and the hardworking people behind them, are what make our community unique and strong. They provide the goods, services, and experiences that enrich our daily lives, and they do so with a level of care and dedication that reflects their deep ties to our community.

As we embrace the changes that fall brings, I encourage you to join me in rallying around our local businesses. Whether it’s your favorite coffee shop, the family-owned hardware store, or the local boutique, these establishments rely on our patronage now more than ever. By choosing to shop, dine, and invest locally, we’re not just supporting businesses—we’re supporting the people who work tirelessly to keep our community vibrant.

The impact of our collective efforts is significant. Every purchase we make, every service we hire, and every meal we enjoy at a local establishment helps sustain jobs, foster economic growth, and keep our community thriving. The employees who greet us with a smile, remember our orders, and go the extra mile to meet our needs are the backbone of these businesses. They are our neighbors, our friends, and our family members.

At Strictly Business Magazine, we are committed to celebrating and promoting the incredible work being done by local businesses and their employees. Our mission is to spotlight the stories that make our community special and to encourage others to support the local economy.

As we enjoy the beauty of the fall season, let’s also make it a time of action and support. Together, we can ensure that our local businesses continue to flourish, providing us with the goods, services, and connections that enrich our lives.

Thank you for being a part of this effort. Your support makes a difference—one local business at a time.

Warm regards,

Let Strictly Business help you lock in your status as THE EXPERT in your industry, utilizing print, the internet and social media. Find out how by contacting Paige at (402) 466-3330.

Tobacco Free Lancaster County, in collaboration with El Centro de las Americas, hosted a oneday workshop titled “Empower and Connect: Cultural Wisdom for Community Impact” in Lincoln. Facilitated by Standford University Health Equity Ambassadors, Theresa “Tessa” Dansie and Emily Dansie, wife and daughter of the late Dr. Roberto Dansie, the workshop featured three sessions on Cultural Consciousness and Conduct, Cultivating Culture and Community and Trauma-Informed Responses and Mindfulness.

Tessa and Emily engaged over 70 attendees with a mix of presentations, activities, discussions and videos, guiding participants through the Four Pillars of Hope–Consciousness, Conduct, Culture and Community–and introducing the Empathetic Listening Model as a key tool for fostering meaningful community connections.

The workshop emphasized the importance of understanding the culture and personality of community leaders when planning programs. Attendees were encouraged to listen empathetically and tailor their approach to the unique needs of the community.

A key takeaway was the Diamond Rule, which advocates treating others as they wish to be treated, offering a fresh perspective compared to the Golden Rule of “treating others as you would want to be treated.”

This workshop served as a valuable refresher on cultural sensitivity, community engagement and the power of empathy in connecting with and empowering communities.

Funding was provided by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services/Tobacco Free Nebraska Program as a result of the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement. For more information about Tobacco Free Lancaster County, go to tobaccofreelancastercounty.com.

September in Nebraska

For most of us in Nebraska, September is the month that marks the beginning of another Husker football or volleyball season. For those of us in the health insurance industry, it is the final month of preparation before enrollment season begins. Read on to find out what YOU need to do in September. First, let’s do a little quiz: What is an ANOC?

a. An ancient guardian of a harem.

b. A kind of dad joke followed by “Who’s there?”

c. The Annual Notice of Change document sent by all insurance companies providing Medicare Part C and Part D plans to notify their members of upcoming changes to their plans in the upcoming calendar year.

If you chose B, let’s hang out some time. If you chose C, you are correct. Why does it matter, especially for the 2025 Medicare plan year?

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) passed in 2022 began impacting Part D prescription drug plans already in 2023. The biggest change for 2025 plans is that Medicare enrollees will pay no more than $2,000 during the calendar year for all of their prescriptions. For some people this is a huge win. For the majority of Part D enrollees, it will have other ramifications.

When the ANOC letters arrive this month, OPEN IT, and you will notice: 1. Change in premium. This may reflect an increase of up to $35/month from the 2024 premium for the same plan. 2. Change in formulary. This means that the plan may be reducing the number prescriptions it covers for 2025. 3. Pharmacy network changes. These alignments change annually, and it is always good to know that your pharmacy and your plan will work together. 4. Description of the M3P or Medicare Prescription Payment Program. Check this space next month for further information.

The Part D program is still undergoing congressional review, and more changes are anticipated in the upcoming weeks–public access to 2025 plans begins October 1, and enrollment begins October 15.

Get ready to review, or help the seniors in your life review, your stand-alone Part D coverage or Part D coverage in their Medicare Advantage plan. The licensed agents at On Point Insurance Agency are here to help.

Knock, knock. Who’s there? Time-to-knock. Time-to-knock who? Time to knock open your ANOC!

Tell us a little about your business. - Union Bank and Trust, (UBT) is a privately owned bank that prioritizes excellent customer service and tailors’ products to customer’s best interest. UBT actively supports the communities it serves through philanthropic efforts and employee engagement.

How did you get started in the business? - I have been with UBT for close to nine years now. Starting out my career with UBT as a Branch Manager/Officer of the Fairbury, Nebraska location. Even though banking wasn’t my initial career choice as a marketing graduate, I’m forever grateful that a friend introduced me to this rewarding industry. With my new role as Business Relationship Officer, I’ve found my purpose in building meaningful relationships that help businesses become more successful. I love seeing the businesses, we partner with thrive and add vitality to the communities they serve.

Tell us a little about your family. - I am one proud mom, who loves over sharing about my three incredible kids: Kacy, Colton and Braxton. Kacy is a currently a senior at UNL majoring in Fashion Merchandising. Colton is living on the family farm in Fairbury, Nebraska; he is proudly serving/working in this agriculture community. Braxton is attending sixth grade at Moore Elementary in Lincoln and his current passion is technology.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - I have two, that I feel go hand in hand…When I was 14, I went in front of a judge and asked him to terminate my parent’s rights. I finished high school as a ward of the state and lived in a foster home. Once, I graduated high school I put myself through college majoring in Marketing.

Fast forward to the present….My youngest son was diagnosed with Autism, ADHD and severe Anxiety. Two years ago, based on the advice of his doctors we packed up and moved to Lincoln from our hometown of Fairbury, Nebraska. I had lived in Fairbury for 40 plus years, and it was what I knew. But I was told that LPS would provide my son resources that Brax would not be able to receive at his current school. LPS has not disappointed us, in fact the school system here in Lincoln has been amazing, and I believe it has changed the trajectory of my son’s life.

There is a saying, “Be the adult/parent that you needed when you were a child”. I hope that is my legacy.

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - I am member of downtown Rotary 14, whose motto is “Service Above Self”. I appreciate this organization so much for what they do for the Lincoln Community and Internationally. This service organization allows me to do things such as: read to preschoolers, pick up trash around Lincoln, serve at The Gathering Place and the list goes on. But it also has given me the opportunity to meet so many wonderful individuals that share many of my core values.

I also serve on the Board of WICS, which is a home for teen girls here in Lincoln. It is very important for me to have the opportunity to serve on this board as I grew up in Foster Care. It is a passion of mine is to see girls at risk be given opportunities that could very possibly change their lives for the better.

If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? - Princess Diana.

I was then able to transition to the PDC role last July to be a catalyst for an exceptional workplace culture to benefit our excellent team members and enable them to be passionate in providing quality care to our residents.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?

- While working full time at Sumner Place, I completed my master’s degree in social work and public administration. I graduated December 2019 with all the love and support of my husband, older daughter who was two at time, my parents, siblings and in-laws.

Tell us a little about your family. - My husband Gunner is a Project Manager for a construction company here in Lincoln. We will be married 10 years in October. Our older daughter Amelia is seven years old and is starting second grade and our younger daughter Eliza is three years old and is starting preschool.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - We love to go on “family adventures” outdoors, like hiking through local forest areas, wetlands or prairie areas while watching for tracks and wildlife. Wilderness Park, Saline Wetlands Nature Center and Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center have been some of the destinations this summer!

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Complaining about not achieving success despite working hard is like complaining about an ice cube not melting when you heated it from 25 to 31 degrees. Your work was not wasted; it is just being stored. All the action happens at thirty-two degrees.” – James Clear

What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? - I play the cello! I started in fifth grade and played regularly through my undergrad. I’ve been able to play for our annual talent show at Sumner Place a couple times and will find more time again as our girls get a little older.

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - We are generally listening to MyBridge Radio in the car for the uplifting music and inspiring stories of great things happening in Nebraska. I’ve seen the amazing impact the Dreamweaver Foundation has for older adults – including numerous residents at Sumner Place. Our Vetter Foundation is a nonprofit that focuses on Christian mission works locally, nationally and internationally.

DAN STAR CITY SIX

Meet Dan Wenzl, a Risk Advisor at North Risk Partners.

Tell us a little about your business. - At North Risk Partners, we help our clients with all their Risk Management and Insurance needs by finding customized solutions that fit each client’s individual business. As insurance professionals we are in the relationship business. We look forward to understanding our client’s business and developing a professional relationship to provide the best possible risk and insurance solutions.

How did you get started in the business? - My dad was a State Farm agent so working in insurance was a natural fit for me. Interviewing out of college, I found the opportunities for growth and career path came from the insurance industry. Most people do not think of insurance as a possible career, but the industry has been good to me.

I love being part of an industry that helps clients enhance their businesses by offering quality products and services, thereby assisting clients in minimizing their financial risks during times of need. My experiences working as a claims adjuster for a large insurance company, a risk manager for 2 fortune 500 companies, as a consultant for one of the largest Insurance and Human Services organizations in the world and, saving the best for last, having the good fortune to work for one the largest regional insurance brokers in the Midwest have all contributed to my satisfaction in helping develop custom solutions to help my clients have peace of mind as they continue to grow and find success in their respective industries.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? When I first started, we encountered numerous prospects who were hesitant to engage in discussions about insurance, either due to a lack of trust, misconceptions about the product, or simply because they don’t see insurance as a priority. And I still see those same concerns today. I try to address these concerns through a strategic approach and a significant investment in building relationships and credibility. North Risk as an organization takes the time to understand each client’s unique needs and concerns and then tailor our solutions to each individual client. This requires not only selling ourselves and the company to a potential client, but also selling the client to the insurance market. Finding the right fit for our clients is the key to a lasting relationship.

Tell us a little about your family. - My wife works in the life and health insurance industry. We have two children and I am so proud of both of them for not only graduating from college, but also going on to completing their master’s degrees. Although, our kids ended up in non-insurance related careers, one as a teacher and the other as a mental health therapist, each of us has found our own ways to help people and contribute to our communities. I have been very blessed with a wonderful family.

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - The Special Olympics is a wonderful cause and a terrific organization. Each year we volunteer as an office, which give us the opportunity to connect with people and participate in the enthusiasm of the athletes. It can be infectious and fun. Connecting with everyone from the athletes to the organizers to the other volunteers makes it all worthwhile. What better way to foster a sense of community and belonging than participation in sports. I look forward to the next event.

STAR CITY SIX CARLA

Meet Carla Zedicher PsyD, the Fitness Manager at Madonna ProActive.

Tell us a little about your business. - Madonna Rehabilitation, and most specifically the Wellness Club, is an extraordinary organization to be a part of; it is innovative, collaborative, research-driven, holistic and truly cares about the individuals we are fortunate enough to serve. Decisions are made daily to positively impact the wellness of all individuals - regardless of where they are in their health, wellness or fitness journey. Through Madonna, there is something (and someone) for everyone. Teams work collaboratively to support the needs of clients, patients, members and nonmembers! Trainers, therapists, instructors, coaches, customer support... everyone!

How did you get started in the business? - My journey is not much different than that of others. I began with a personal health goal. Specifically, I wanted to compete in a fitness competition that required multiple hours of training each day. From that, a passion developed. The more I trained, the more questions I received from spectatorsexercise options, thoughts on nutritional aids, programming, etc. Not feeling equipped to answer the questions I received, I went to school to gain more knowledge. I began training others and teaching classes before and after my full-time career, then eventually made the leap towards making health and wellness a full-time career.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?Acceptance.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?Completing my doctorate degree while working multiple jobs in vastly different areas has been my biggest professional accomplishment. After graduation, my students decorated our classroom with congratulatory signs and Band-Aids, as they did not understand why I was now titled, “Dr. Z.”

Tell us a little about your family. - My family is highly competitive! They constantly are in search of ways to be “more and better” - more productive, more engaging, more efficient with a goal of making a better impact on the world.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - The death of my father. The strength of my mother. The birth of my son.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I do not have many days off. I love being able to witness growth and change in clients - whether training one-on-one, in a group, on a bike, on the training floor or in wellness coaching sessions. I strive to create time for all who desire to create sustainable, healthy change.

Who inspires you? - My father has always been my biggest inspiration, and most of my accomplishments have been dedicated to him. He passed away when I was young, yet, I remember his commitment to others and his pursuit towards greatness. He was a veteran, a principal, a community leader and a sports coach. This, he did while completing a PhD, which was awarded posthumously and explains my motivation.

However, my mother is a terrific inspiration. She raised my siblings and I alone, never let us use tragedy or adversity as an excuse and always used failures as teaching opportunities.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Not even a mosquito gets a pat on the back until it does its job. Why not you?”

If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - czedicher@madonna.org

Child Evangelism Fellowship of Nebraska Helps Transform Lives

A Child Saved...A mother redeemed...A father transformed...A marriage restored... That’s Good News Club!

“This all started with Brianna starting a Good News Club (GNC),” Brianna’s father stated. “My relationship with God was not good at all,” Brianna’s mother shared. Brianna’s parents divorced, and Brianna’s father took her mother to court for custody of Brianna. As Brianna attended the GNC after-school program, her life began to change as she understood the gospel and trusted Christ as her Savior. Her mother noticed the change in Brianna’s behavior and wanted to attend the church that was hosting the GNC. She began attending the church, and God worked in her life. She trusted Christ, and He began to transform her.

Because of the transformation in Brianna’s mother’s attitude and character, her father came to the church to find out what the change was about. The Lord changed his heart and life also. “It is God that has acted in my life,” he declared. “I’m thankful to him every day. I’m a different person, and I am going to be volunteering with the GNC.”

Today, Brianna’s father and mother have remarried and are very happy. “Everything is because of God,” Brianna’s mother declared! “The domino effect of reaching a child changed the life of four different people. Lives were transformed because of God working through the GNC!

Child Evangelism Fellowship of Nebraska is part of a global ministry in nearly every country of the world. Its vision is to reach Every Child, Every Nation and Every Day with the hope of the gospel of Jesus Christ. For more information about CEF of Nebraska, visit cefnebraska.org, or call (402) 484-7877.

National

Direct Support Professional

Recognition

Week Celebrates the Vital Role These Workers Have in Our Community

The role of Direct Support Professionals (DSP) in supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to function in their homes and be part of their communities is vital. That’s why Mosaic in Southeast Nebraska is celebrating their Direct Support Professionals who serve people with IDD during National Direct Support Professional Week, September 8-14.

“We want to raise awareness and recognize the important work DSPs do supporting people to live the life they choose. Their work makes Mosaic’s mission statement to ‘relentlessly pursue opportunities that empower people’ come alive. It is truly a work of heart, which is our theme for this year's awareness celebration,” Associate Director Caite Sadd said. “Mosaic and other service providers couldn’t do what we do without them.”

Mosaic advocates for higher pay for DSPs at national, state, and regional levels. Cheryl Wicks, Mosaic’s Vice President of Government Relations, leads these efforts along with advocating for IDD disability rights with 2,000 “Mosaic Allied Voices” volunteers.

“Provider organizations across the nation are still experiencing staffing crises like none before,” said Wicks. “States and the federal government must remedy the decades of chronic underfunding so wages for DSPs can increase, and people with disabilities have the support they need.”

According to Sadd “For most Direct Support Professionals, their work isn’t a job, it’s often a calling. It’s a selfless act–and that’s why they should be held up, celebrated, and rewarded.”

Mosaic empowers people with disabilities, mental and behavioral health needs and autism, as well as aging adults to live their best life. Mosaic is an affiliated social ministry organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and a member of Lutheran Services in America. Mosaic is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. NebraskaDiaperBanktoAdvocateforNational Diaper Need Awareness Week in September

Nebraska Diaper Bank (NDB) joins diaper banks across America to advocate for diaper needs for National Diaper Need Awareness Week (NDNAW) this September 23-29.

According to the National Diaper Bank Network, one in two families with young children reported experiencing diaper need in the U.S. One in three families suffers from diaper need in Nebraska. Clean, dry diapers are necessary to the health and well-being of growing babies, yet many families struggle to provide enough diapers for their child’s needs. Diapers reduce family stress and help parents go to work. Last year, Nebraska Diaper Bank distributed over 2.8 million diapers to 10,784 babies, and they are on track to distribute 3.5 million diapers in 2024.

Businesses can help NDB keep babies happier, healthier and safer. Do you want to make a difference? Volunteer with NDB! They serves 800 babies a month in Lincoln, so all wrapped diapers make a direct impact for local families. Do you want NDB to come to you? NDB hosts mobile wraps, bringing the same outstanding volunteer experience to your location. You can also make a big impact by hosting a diaper drive. Gather coworkers, collect diapers and raise awareness. Download the toolkit on Nebraska Diaper Bank’s website at nebraskadiaperbank.org.

Call (402) 557-8205 or email mikaela@nebraskadiaperbank.org to schedule a diaper wrap or a mobile wrap. Learn more about Nebraska Diaper Bank as a nonprofit at nebraskadiaperbank.org.

The First-Plymouth site will accommodate more than 100 children, according to Kayla Munoz, owner of Las Abejitas. This preschool program will be based on the Creative Curriculum, available in English and Spanish.

The Las Abejitas’ preschool will help meet the early childhood education needs in the local neighborhood—a need that became more critical with the closing of the Dimensions’ program last May.

SquareOne–where one can begin again. Starting with SquareOne isn’t about giving up or feeling defeated. It’s about embracing a fresh beginning with renewed determination. It’s hitting that reset button, taking a deep breath and saying, “Let’s rewrite the plan and try again.”

At SquareOne, crises are not defining moments; they’re moments to reevaluate and grow. SquareOne’s approach is rooted in compassion and understanding. “We were saddened by the loss of Dimensions as a long-time FirstPlymouth partner in providing quality programs for young children,” said First-Plymouth Senior Minister Jim Keck. “Our church remains dedicated to being a champion of meaningful early childhood education in the Near South neighborhood. After an extensive search for a new partner organization, we are excited to welcome Las Abejitas to our church campus.

Suzanne Schnieder, Lincoln Littles associate director, assisted First Plymouth with the search. Schneider said, “When a beloved provider has to close, we do everything we can to ensure that children and staff have a high-quality place to land.” Lincoln Littles is dedicated to expanding Lincoln’s Early Childhood network and providing opportunities for all of Lincoln’s youngest children through program development and tuition assistance. Lincoln Littles will provide technical assistance and support for the Las Abejitas preschool program.

“Las Abejitas is not moving from another location, but rather expanding its capacity with the addition of the First-Plymouth site. That was key. We want to make sure we are helping to increase childcare in Lincoln,” said Keck. Las Abejitas will continue to offer its bilingual program at 70th and A streets.

To enroll a child, email Kayla Johnson, First-Plymouth site director at admin@lasabejitas.net or access the form on Las Abejitas’ Facebook page.

Information about Las Abejitas is available at lasabejitas.net. Information about First-Plymouth Congregational Church is available at firstplymouth.org.

Lincoln Literacy Offers Driving Classes for Immigrants and Refugees

Lincoln Literacy helps immigrants and refugees acclimate to life in the U.S. by teaching literacy skills, and now the group is also helping people learn to drive.

“Some of them come and they are very afraid,” said Nancy Jerez, instructor and Assistant Director of Adult Skills Programs. “Even if they are in front of the simulator, they are afraid. I think that they get more confident doing that week-by-week. They are learning and they are getting familiar with the parts of the car, that is good for them.”

The eight-week class uses a driving simulator. The purpose of the class is to help people get their driver’s license. Refugee Meena Shams began the class nearly two months ago.

The nonprofit offers a variety of language, career and academic courses. The “Driving Legally and Safely in Nebraska” courses began to include the simulator in March.

There are currently 25 students enrolled. Students are able to practice during weekdays, they typically do so for one-hour a week over a six to eight week timeframe. To learn more visit lincolnliteracy.org.

Community Action has completed its Home for Head Start capital campaign. The $3.55 million project supported needed renovations at Community Action’s Head Start center located at 1821 K St. which transformed the space from one designed for adult learners into one for young children and their families.

Community Action purchased the facility at the corner of 18th and K St. in September 2021. Early lead gifts from supporters such as Acklie Charitable Foundation, Lancaster County ARPA, and Community Health Endowment of Lincoln made renovations possible beginning in spring of 2022. Renovations included 19 classrooms designed to support children age six weeks – five years with features built to suit young children’s needs. Indoor and outdoor play areas were added, along with spaces for parents and community members to gather and access needed resources. Construction will be completed this fall.

The renovated center will be named The Bansal Family Home for Head Start.

"As longtime Lincoln residents, we are humbled and grateful to be able to give back to families in Lincoln through the new Home for Head Start,” said Drs. MK and Prem Bansal. “The Head Start program has been meaningful in our lives -- it allowed Prem to pursue her educational dreams as a doctoral student and young mother in the 1960s, and provided early childhood education for our youngest child. As study after study has shown, early childhood education has a tremendous impact on life outcomes. We hope that young parents and children will get significant head starts in their lives through the revitalized center in Lincoln."

A ribbon-cutting and building dedication will occur on October 2nd. A community celebration of the project’s successful completion is planned for Sunday, October 6th. Details are forthcoming.

2024HuskerFansSalutetheTroopsWeekend CANCELLED

The 2024 Husker Fans Salute the Troops Weekend has been CANCELLED due to not being able to raise enough funds.

With that being said we are turning our focus over to 2025 and starting the process to raise the funds for that year’s event in which the date will be decided later on in the year.

2025 marks the 16th Husker Salute weekend, when 100 Veterans and military families plan to congregate in Lincoln at a Lincoln hotel as volunteer Husker fans host them for an awesome, morale-boosting Big Red Husker experience! The very first Husker Salute weekend was in 2008 when Nebraska played Oklahoma, as 70 heroes and their families enjoyed the hospitality and fun, despite an OU win on the field. With rave reviews and more fan support, Husker Salute weekend happened again in 2009 and has continued through the years, honoring nearly 1,100 service members and their families! Dedicated volunteers span Lincoln, surrounding Nebraska communities, and even beyond our borders during the off-season to gather funds and donations from Husker fans and businesses who also have the same passion for Husker football that transcends to a deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by our military brothers and sisters and families, to protect and provide the freedoms we have in Nebraska and across America. Husker Salute plans FUN, FREE, FAMILY-oriented activities, including the inspirational keynote speaker, tbd, with the goal to combat PTSD and to help with suicide prevention in our military population.

If you would like to become a Husker Fan who Salutes the Troops, or a Husker Business that Salutes the Troops, see our website for details and contact information HuskerSalute.org. Every donation helps, and 100% supports the cause.

Nebraska Community Blood Bank Third Annual “Pint for a Pint” Campaign

Nebraska Community Blood Bank's (NCBB) third annual “Pint for a Pint” campaign is to encourage blood donations during the critical late summer months. This campaign started Thursday, August 1 and will be going on through Tuesday, September 10. All who show up to donate will receive a voucher redeemable for a free or discounted beverage or an ice cream treat at a participating venue.

Six breweries, pubs, and creameries are coming together to support the critical need for blood donations in the summertime by participating in this year’s “Pint for a Pint” campaign. The full list of participating establishments can be found here. All donor centers and most blood drives are participating in this initiative. Blood donors cannot redeem their vouchers on the day of their donation.

“Nebraska Community Blood Bank is grateful for the generosity of our local breweries, pubs and creameries for supporting us each year by raising awareness and offering gifts to our lifesaving donors,” said Cheryl Warholoski, Executive Director at Nebraska Community Blood Bank. “The ‘Pint for a Pint’ campaign is a favorite of many of our blood donors and we hope this fun incentive will inspire folks to make an appointment to give the gift of life this summer, support their favorite local businesses and beat the summer heat with a refreshing pint or ice cream treat!”

Blood donors can give every 56 days, and platelet donors can give twice per month. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently lifted several blood donor eligibility restrictions. To view current eligibility guidelines, visit ncbb.org or call (402) 486-9414.

To make an appointment at a blood drive near you, donors can visit ncbb. org/pint.

Back to School At CEDARS

As the summer has ended, kids everywhere headed back to the classroom. And so have the kids at CEDARS. Each day, there are nearly 1,000 kids in CEDARS care and we are dedicated to ensuring each one receives the best possible start.

Whether a preschooler in our Early Childhood Development Center or a second-grader in our before-and-after school program or a sophomore in high school staying at our Emergency Shelter, CEDARS is here to help kids as they transition back to school and make plans for a successful year. While education support is woven into each program, we have highlighted a few services focused on delivering quality, enriching opportunities to kids in our care.

CEDARS Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) is in the heart of our city to provide quality childcare and early education to children of working families. CEDARS ECDC is nationally accredited and was recently recognized by Nebraska Step Up to Quality with the highest possible rating, an honor only a handful of other providers in our state have earned.

CEDARS operates three before-and-after school Community Learning Center (CLC) programs for Clinton, Hartley and Randolph elementary school students.

In addition to providing a safe and welcoming place for students before and after school, kids in this program enjoy positive and enriching activities—like sewing and archery—as well as academic clubs to help kids become lifelong learners. CEDARS CLCs also encourage collaboration among the school, community and families. Last year, nearly 500 students participated in CEDARS CLCs! Kids who are unable to live at home and have been welcomed to CEDARS often need additional educational support. Our team is here to help them enroll in classes, catch up on needed credits and make plans beyond high school. CEDARS also offers tutoring and mentoring, giving kids the tools and resources they need to be successful in school and beyond.

Christian Record Services Celebrates Successful Summer Camp Season

CASAforLancasterCountyAnnouncesOctober & November Volunteer Training Schedule

This summer, Christian Record Services provided over 100 separate summer-camp experiences for children and adults who are blind or experiencing vision loss. Since its startup in 1967, thousands of campers have experienced camps through National Camps for Blind Children, a program of Christian Record Services.

This summer, campers enjoyed a plethora of indoor and outdoor activities at summer camps in Minnesota, Maine, Indiana, Oklahoma and Colorado. An additional camp will be hosted in Florida in September. Activities included horseback riding, archery, water skiing, crafts, cooking and even zip lining over the lake.

One of the campers this summer shared about his camp experience, “It means so much to all of us, and gives us all a chance to feel normal.” Each camp is scheduled at a well-equipped site, chosen especially for its high standard of excellence and geographical location. Committed staff and counselors are trained to meet the needs of legally blind campers who are between the ages of nine and sixty-five.

Do you know someone who is blind? Would they be interested in attending a camp such as this next summer? For more information on how to make this happen, visit blindcamp.org.

The Combine AgTech Incubator Supports Innovation in Agriculture

CASA for Lancaster County is seeking volunteers. A training session for new volunteers is set to begin on October 15. This is a six-week training course and will be held on Tuesday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. All training sessions will be held at CASA for Lancaster County, 1141 H Street, STE C, on the third floor.

CASA volunteers are trained community advocates who are assigned to abused/ neglected children who are in Juvenile Court through no fault of their own. CASA volunteers have a court order that gives them access to the child and to all their records, so the CASA volunteer can gather information and determine the needs of the child. This is done by interviewing all interested and concerned parties to determine the facts and reviewing all records and documents.

CASA volunteers get to know the child, and they communicate the child’s needs and wishes to the judge. CASA volunteers are required to attend approximately 30 hours of pre-service training, 12 hours of in-service (continuing education) annually and are supervised by a CASA staff person.

In 2023, CASA served 316 children, trained 32 new volunteers and had 123 volunteers assigned to children. For those interested in learning more about becoming a volunteer or about CASA for Lancaster County, visit casa4lancaster.org/advocate-for-children/.

The Combine AgTech Incubator supports agriculture technology founders with the individualized support they need to lead in agriculture innovation. At The Combine, they know that founding a startup can be intimidating, but founders truly want to build a successful company and lead in agriculture innovation. The problem is many founders don't know the right steps to build an AgTech startup, weighing them down with a lack of confidence in themselves as a founder.

Because of this, The Combine believes founders shouldn't have to figure it out alone. They understand it can be overwhelming, which is why they have created a proven method that has helped 29 startups raise over $16 million in capital. Founders benefit by getting individualized support, gaining access to a network of farmers and being immersed in the Nebraska AgTech Ecosystem.

From initial goal setting and idea assessment to preparation for a capital raise, The Combine Program is designed to assist entrepreneurs on an individual basis. The Combine Curriculum is a series of modules that provide early-stage companies in food and agriculture the resources and fundamentals needed in the early stages of building a start-up business.

The Combine Incubation Space hosts food and agriculture tech companies that are progressing through The Combine Commercialization Program, monthly AgriFood Meetups, visits from the Combine Insights Producers Network and office hours from local and regional investors. The incubator is located on Nebraska Innovation Campus (2125 Transformation Dr., STE 1000) and offers private office suites as well as hot desk memberships.

11,000 Diagnosed Each Year: Helping Nebraskans Battle Cancer

The Heartland Cancer Foundation believes no cancer patient should fall behind on treatment because they struggle to afford their everyday expenses. 11,000 Nebraskans are diagnosed with cancer each year, and one in four cancer patients will not recover because they cannot afford the care they need.

This is an issue that needs to be addressed in the community, and there are several types of gifts that philanthropists can consider to support local cancer patients who are struggling financially.

Through legacy giving, individuals have the opportunity to leave a lasting impact on the lives of those battling cancer by including the foundation in their estate planning. These legacy gifts ensure that future generations of cancer patients will receive the much-needed aid and care they deserve.

Recurring giving also plays a pivotal role as it creates a steady and dependable source of funding for the foundation's ongoing efforts, such as planning and executing long-term programs and events, awareness and outreach and offering extended aid to patients during their entire treatment journey.

Finally, setting up a donor-advised fund presents a strategic way to show support and offers numerous advantages. It simplifies the giving process, consolidates multiple charitable donations into a single fund and offers flexibility in timing charitable donations–and donors can take an immediate tax deduction. If interested, the Lincoln Community Foundation is a great place to set up a fund.

September is Hunger Action Month, a national campaign to inspire people to take action and raise awareness about hunger. Matt Talbot works to relieve hunger by offering two nutritious prepared meals every day, providing food pantries for people who need food at home and distributing high-quality, fresh food from local restaurants and grocery stores.

“We take the choices we have when deciding what to eat for dinner for granted,” said Alynn Sampson, Executive Director. “Many of our guests experiencing hunger face a very different type of choice when they have to choose between food and other basic needs such as rent, medical care, childcare or electricity.”

Businesses, faith communities, service organizations and families are encouraged to take part in Hunger Action Month by joining together to serve a meal or conduct a food drive. Items most needed include canned meats, low-sugar whole-grain cereal, peanut butter and other nonperishable or prepackaged items that don’t require preparation like granola bars, nuts or dried fruit. The Waterford Assisted Living, Alzheimer’s & Memory Care Communities of Lincoln are locally owned and operated. Its team of professionals is committed to using their talents and strengths to serve the needs of all The Waterford Communities residents.

The Waterford Communities offers assistance on a small-scale, personal level. Unlike many other assisted-living facilities, The Waterford Communities in Lincoln takes great pride in maintaining a smaller community of residents, so every resident feels taken care of and supported during their senior-living transition and in their unique needs.

Additionally, the following services set The Waterford Communities apart from other senior community residence homes:

1. No-minimum stay policy

2. Respite Stays

3. Day Stays

The Waterford Communities puts the health and happiness of its residents and their families first, so there is no minimum stay requirement for respite stay. Accommodating seniors varies greatly from person to person, so no kind of timeline is ever forced. This is why The Waterford Communities dedication to individual care is unmatched.

So, what denotes a “respite” stay? This short stay is classified by a Waterford Communities professional serving as an interim caregiver while a senior’s primary caregiver is out of town and needs someone to care for their senior. With that, The Waterford Communities can also house a senior for even just a week or two while the senior’s caregiver is absent.

Notably, The Waterford Communities also provides Day Stays. Here, The Waterford Communities will care for your loved one for the day during their waking hours. This way, elders can maintain their day-to-day schedule–receive medications, exercise, etc.

The Waterford Communities understands how difficult finding the right assisted living or memory support community for seniors can be, leaving families feeling helpless and overwhelmed. The Waterford Communities team ensures its families do not feel alone. The Waterford Assisted Living and Memory Care Communities helps each and every one of its residents and their families find the perfect fit, so each family member can be confident that they have made the right decision. The Waterford Communities professionals are selected for their genuine desire to care for individuals and are deeply committed to serving Lincoln’s seniors.

The Training For Warriors (TFW) system originally began as a fitness program for some of the best combat athletes in the world more than 15 years ago. Today, the training methods of the TFW system can benefit anyone looking to lose fat, build muscle and feel good. TFW is taught by a global network of affiliated coaches and trainers that run the TFW system at licensed TFW locations.

TFW-Lincoln is the first Training for Warriors affiliate in Nebraska, and with over 250 affiliate locations in 30 countries, thousands of people per day are using the TFW system to bring their fitness to another level!

Through TFW-Lincoln’s philosophy of “Bringing Out the Warrior Within,” TFW-Lincoln motivates its students through coaching and a systematic approach to training. Not only do TFW clients get great lessons in physical training, but they are also armed with valuable life lessons that help improve all areas of one’s life. TFW-Lincoln believes that everybody has the ability to do great things, and each coach gives clients the strategies to Bring Out the Warrior Within!

Any gym can have equipment and offer workouts. What separates the TFW system from other training programs is its culture. TFW encompasses signature warm-ups, speed training, strength training, endurance training and flexible work and nutrition–all of which are based on a comprehensive evaluation process. And, the most important component of the system is TFW’s motivational approach and family environment. TFW-Lincoln understands that if clients don’t have fun and enjoy the training, they won’t do it. TFW is not designed as a sport or competition, rather it focuses on the competition against and the betterment of one’s own body, mind and spirit.

No matter one’s current fitness level, TFW can help. Although TFW once increased the performance and self-esteem of the world’s top athletes, anyone can benefit from the TFW system–meaning TFW defines a warrior as anyone prepared to work hard, develop oneself and take on his or her challenges in life.

LINCOLN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

It has been an incredible summer for the Lincoln community and our team at the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce. In addition to partnering with the Greater Topeka Partnership to host nearly 120 business and community leaders in Boise for our first intercity visit in July, we also welcomed Nebraska’s Federal Congressional Delegation to our annual Federal Legislative Summit, united hundreds of interns for our successful summer MyTern program series, launched a new career progression resource to connect students, job seekers and businesses through a partnership with CareerPathway.com and continued our work to elevate the economic vitality of Lincoln.

BUILDING LINCOLN

Over the years, Lincoln has grown right before everyone’s eyes. Nebraska capital city has seen some major changes throughout the years. Becoming the state’s second-most populous city, there has been a lot of expansion in recent history. None of which would be possible with the great help of the construction workers that help Lincoln grow. In the last 50 years, Lincoln has doubled its population. Back in 1989, the city was only 63 square miles. Now the city has increased 59%, and is now over 100 square miles. The city has built so much since then. There are four new high schools, a new Telegraph District and an expanded downtown area.

You can thank the amazing construction teams for their involvement for Lincoln’s growing city limits and incredible infrastructure. There are so many current projects happening in Lincoln to make it a better city and a better place to live for every resident here. A stretch of 40th St. from Rokeby and Tiger Lily Road is being repaved in order to improve safety and capacity of the transportation system. The project included new pavement with one lane in each direction and a raised center median. A new roundabout was constructed at Tiger Lily Road, and includes a new sidewalk with curb ramps to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements and utility work. The project is estimated at about $3.5 million dollars. The same improvements are being made to A St., Old Cheney Rd., and Holdrege. It’s immensely

BASKETBALL

important to have new and improved streets in the city and Lincoln is working on improving each and every one. Projects like this are why Lincoln is constantly growing and improving. Roads aren’t the only thing that Lincoln is working on improving. By 2050, Lincoln is looking to have 48,000 new households with four units per acre expected new residential density of new edge development in Lincoln, with 25% expected new residential units to be built as infill within the existing city. These predictions use existing trends as a starting point, but include an increased focus on promoting and achieving higher percentage of appropriately-placed and well-designed infill development. This allows a higher promotion of infill development and allows the city to focus more funds on enhancing and maintaining current infrastructure and services, while still providing the necessary investments to serve new growth areas.

Lincoln’s population was 290,206 in 2020, and in 2050 the population is expected to

grow to 397,529—a growth of 107,323— these numbers show that Lincoln will need to accommodate for these new people. It’s important to always be improving the city, for there’s always something to improve. It’s not just the City of Lincoln that’s working on improving Lincoln; it’s every incredible construction company that works around the clock to make sure every project they’re overseeing goes according to plan and makes Lincoln all the better. Here are some of the projects that these amazing companies have either recently completed or are currently working on, each one a marvel in its own right.

Cheever Construction is giving back to its community with their most recent two site project right here in Lincoln. Partnering with Lincoln Public Schools and with the help of Union Bank, Cheever Construction was contracted to oversee the building of two new athletic complexes for two of Lincoln’s local public schools. At Northwest High School, Cheever provided a space for student athletes from all over Lincoln to play in a space that looks and feels professional. The final product at Northwest High School included a football stadium, track and baseball field and will be shared by the entire district’s school. The stadium can seat up to 2,800 people and has a concessions building and a press box. Then, at Standing Bear High school, Cheever oversaw the construction of four soccer and two softball fields and a six-court tennis focus. The main soccer field features seating for up to 1,000 people.

Combined, the project included two football fields, two tracks, two baseball fields, five softball fields, nine tennis courts, eight soccer, concessions, stadium, bleachers, press box, restrooms and lighting. Before this, most of the sporting events were hosted at Seacrest High School. However, now the districts in LPS will have the resources to practice closer to home, and huge upgrade and time save for all the sporting events the school hosts.

Because this was a two site project, it took about 12 months to complete, making sure that everything was up to standard and ready for the athletes to compete and play on it for the following sports season this fall.

“We work with schools all over the state,” says President Justin Kurtzer . “LPS has been fantastic to work with and it’s exciting to see what they can do with their new athletic space.”

Fall is a time for restoration and rebuilding, and that’s exactly what Kingery Construction has been doing. They restored an abandoned theater, made for movies and performances alike. Because of their work, they were awarded with the state award and were given the Blue River Art Council and City of Crete volunteer organization of the year.

This restoration of this theater will help bring performance, arts and entertainment to the community of Crete that wasn’t there before.

Kingery has been around for 100 years and continues to bring new life to performance and new life to old buildings throughout Lincoln.

“Our work continues to be beneficial to Lincoln’s economy,” says President Rod Berens . “We just finished working on a new facility for Bristol Windows, which does full service window replacement, both residential and commercial.”

Kingery is a company you can trust with both restoration projects and ground up projects. There’s nothing they can’t do. There’s a reason they’ve been a leading construction company for over 100 years. They are committed to delivering exceptional construction projects that cater to the specific needs of local communities.

Tru-Built Construction is always working on ways to keep Lincoln new and fresh, and this month is no exception. Recently, at 5900 S 85th St, The Mercato opened another location that is a combination of Certified Piedmontese retail sales, high end bicycles and cycling accessories, along with a small tap room. This was an interior remodel and took about four months to complete.

Another project recently completed is the new Capital Eye Care building located at 3920 Crescent Dr. which is located just South of the Super Target corner of 40th and Yankee Hill. Dr. Pfeil and Dr. Reins have built an incredible reputation over the years and their new facility allows them to meet the needs of their clients. They are taking on new patients as well so stop in and check it out.

Tru-Built is working on many other projects, including Aristos Apartments near 40th and Yankee Hill. Aristos is a premier apartment community that when complete will have over 425 units, 2 swimming pools, large courtyards, dog runs, and many other attractive amenities. This project covers almost 20 acres and will have new units coming online every year for the next 3 years.

Tru-Built Construction works on both residential and commercial projects helping their clients achieve their project goals.

It’s been a remarkable year for Kingery Construction Co. as we celebrate 100 years. Our ongoing commitment to excellence propels us forward as we eagerly embrace future opportunities and nurture partnerships.

With a focus on the future, we’re primed to embark on new ventures, innovate projects, and further enrich Nebraska’s communities. Our dedication and partnership focus ensures a sustained positive impact for years ahead.

The Housing Authority of the City of Lincoln (LHA) is a governmental entity established under state law, by the City of Lincoln, with a mission of providing affordable housing to the residents of Lincoln.

Focusing on the individual means Gramercy focuses on knowing its resident’s life story and truly understanding what is important to them and finding ways to honor this. The Residence at Gramercy strives to ensure residents feel seen and valued by the Gramercy staff.

As a senior living community, The Residence at Gramercy maintains strong relationships with its fellow communities to ensure that it can provide resources to those searching for more care. Gramercy may not be able to accommodate every individual, yet it strives to help them find communities that are able to provide them with a safe environment and meet their needs.

The Residence at Gramercy offers it's resident care team additional training, utilizing experts in the industry. Gramercy hosts Lunch and Learns, so they can collaborate and share their expertise. These lessons are reflected in the areas in which Gramercy improve for their residents–to ensure care needs are always being met.

The Residence at Gramercy’s compassion is translated through actions. The number one way Gramercy does this is by meeting residents and their families where they are. If they are upset, then the Gramercy team slows down and does not try to immediately rectify, rather they listen and attempt to understand why residents and their families feel the way they do. After all, Gramercy’s ultimate goal is to be as helpful as possible!

Noreen Home Care is locally owned. Their owner Noreen Mwabe, has a personal focus of finding ways to support and give back to the community. Her generosity is reflected in her philosophy that she is not striving to be the “Biggest,” but to be the most personal, hands-on provider of in home care. She believes in doing all of the “EXTRAS,” that family would do. Each care companion is taught to look for ways to treat each person like family.

Noreen Home Care receives many employees through word of mouth from those organizations who know individuals who want to work in a fun, healthy and personable business that is willing to do the “EXTRAS” for them just as they are taught to do for those, they provide care and services too.

They also participate with many other community leaders in meetings and promotions that focus on local workforce. Their hands-on trainer ensures that each person is given instruction on not only care techniques but also the individual needs of the people we value and care for.

“Innovation is in the core of our care and services,” says Executive Director Virginia Cole. “Our Motto is, “Caring for you like family.” This cannot be accomplished without us training and providing opportunity for our care companions to identify and provide the “EXTRA” attention, activities and compassionate focus for every individual. We spend a great deal of time learning each person’s story to help identify hobbies, nostalgic moments to be created, favorite animals or pets for activity planning, etc. There is no limit to the kindness and creativity people can bring to their work when inspired and empowered.”

Noreen Home Care provides the common services for home care such as, personal care, housekeeping, laundry, med reminders, transportation to appointments or activities, meal preparation and so much more.

JOINING ORGANIZATIONS

TWICE A YEAR

, in March and September, Strictly Business puts together a Joining Organizations feature. We want to make sure that these organizations have a chance to get their name out there and share their current efforts, membership benefits, partnership opportunities and anything else the community should be aware of.

Community organizations contribute to the fabric of our economy by bringing industry leaders together, offering education and resources to their members and partnering with other local entities to implement positive change in our area. There are so many dedicated, passionate groups of like-minded individuals who are all committed to making a difference in their professional, cultural and social communities. Joining these groups often results in forming new relationships that, in turn, lead to personal and professional growth and success.

Here at Strictly Business , we stand behind the hard-working organizations that continuously better Lincoln and its occupants. We do this by offering discounted rates to these organizations so they can highlight their upcoming events and meetings, accomplishments, awards, members, staff and opportunities for involvement. In Lincoln, you will find organizations and association representing nearly every profession or industry – many of which have national, regional, state and/or local chapters who would love to have you as a member.

With countless reputable and talented professionals in Lincoln, it can be difficult to stand out. One of the best ways to stand out and become a household name in the community is to get involved in every way you can. By finding an organization or association that matches your interest, passions and goals, your commitment to excellence in the Lincoln community will shine through and differentiate you from other local businesses.
