Our goal is to support a healthy lifestyle by making nutritious food accessible and convenient. We also provide catering services.

How did you get started in the business? - I’ve worked in restaurants and kitchens for half my life, so I have a lot of experience in the industry. I applied to Clean Eatz in January of this year, and since then, I’ve worked my way up to a lead position. The supportive environment at Clean Eatz has also played a significant part in my growth, providing me with opportunities to develop my skills and take on more responsibilities.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - The biggest challenge I’ve faced professionally was stepping into the role of a team lead in a kitchen for the first time. Managing a diverse group of people, each with their own strengths and personalities, was a significant learning curve. Restoring courage. Facilitating healing. Empowering families.

Maintaining ethical practices and ensuring the integrity of their nonprofit has always been a core value of Project Harmony. This is why, for the 27th year of the competition, and a year that saw a record-breaking number of entries, Project Harmony has earned the 2024 Better Business Bureau’s Torch Awards for Ethics, which recognizes local organizations’ outstanding ethical practices and commitment to character, culture, customers and community. Huge congratulations to Project Harmony.

Child abuse is a fact in the community, discriminating against no one and impacting thousands of lives each year. Project Harmony is boldly focused on ending this cycle. They have reimagined how communities can get together, leveraging resources to respond to, treat and ultimately prevent child abuse. The cycle of abuse does not have to continue, but they can’t end it alone. Anyone has the power to be someone who makes the community a safe place for all children.

Medical evaluations, forensic interviews and advocacy services are provided to ensure that each child and family gets the most from those responding to child abuse.

Project Harmony’s nationally recognized, collaborative, child-focused approach works to ensure children are not further victimized by the systems intended to protect them. It’s the place where healing begins, providing effective, immediate and sensitive support to children and caregivers who have experienced trauma. Our preventative and treatment programs mean a brighter future for children and families. Project Harmony is committed to a vision of building a safe and promising for all children and families. Project Pink'd Announces Jovan Johnson to Board of Directors

Project Pink’d is excited to announce a new member of the Board of Directors, Jovan Johnson.

Her journey to Project Pink’d is a little different from others. In January of 2016, she became part of a club that nobody actually wants to join. At the time of her breast cancer diagnosis, she was a single mother to my daughter living in Charlotte, NC. As she navigated her way through treatment, she was told about this place called “Pink House”. The Pink House had something for every woman regardless of where they were in their breast cancer journey. She started attending different events and had the pleasure of meeting some wonderful women.

Fast forward to 2022, she was back in Omaha and looking for an organization that was similar to Pink House. Enters Project Pink’d. She was connected to Haley Amstrong on the Executive Advisory Committee, and she would eventually meet with Dave, Malinda and Shawn and be extended the invitation to join the EAC. While on the EAC she started volunteering my time and doing whatever she could to help at different events. She was able to see Project Pink’d’s mission in action. The survivors all in various stages of their breast cancer journey were offered education, resources and support.

From the moment of diagnosis through end of life, Project Pink’d, Inc. provides tools, resources and a strong network to strengthen and renew the mind, body and spirit of breast cancer survivors in Nebraska and Western Iowa. They have a vision for each survivor in the community to thrive beyond their diagnosis, disease and treatment. Learn more at projectpinkd.org.

5402 N 90th St.

Tu Familia’s authentic Mexican flavors form Jalisco and Puebla had the Strictly Business team salivating and craving more even after our tummies were full! Tu Familia, located at 5402 North 90th Street, blends delicious, authentic Mexican cuisine with an atmosphere that celebrates heritage and family. Owners Javier, Stephen and Jose opened Tu Familia eight months ago, and it has since been a hit for the Omaha community!

The Strictly Business team thoroughly enjoyed its night, so bear with us as we rattle off our favorites from Tu Familia!

We started the evening by ordering from Tu Familia’s tasty selection of specialty drinks. The Stellarita was a big hit, especially for our president, and had just the right notes and potency of blackberries, blueberries and strawberries. The Pineapple Martini and Classic Margarita were also team favorites, satisfying our taste buds craving summer citrus and fruit! The Strictly Business team also wants to give a shout out to the Michelada and Cantarito as honorable mentions. There were just too many good drinks from which to choose!

Now, let’s discuss the main dishes, all of which were, again, too hard rank. We couldn’t help but go back for more and more chips and dip thanks to the mouthwatering flavors provided by Tu Familia’s notorious Queso Fundido. This was ravenously followed by the team’s favorite dish, the Discada. The Discada was loaded with meats and jalapenos for just the right amount of zingy deliciousness. The flavors practically exploded in our mouth. Along with the Discada, no one wanted to share Tu Familia’s other two signature dishes, the Birria Red Tacos and Fajita Quesadilla. These two dishes almost caused a fight because they were so tasty!

Again, the Strictly Business team can’t recommend just a few items from Tu Familia’s stacked menu, so we also recommend checking out the classic Burrito Mexicano and Molcajete.

To finish off the evening, we attacked Tu Familia’s electrifying dessert, the Chocolate Flan. To say each of us was in our own sweet tooth heaven would be an understatement. The Chocolate Flan is an every visit must!

Overall, Tu Familia is the perfect place to stop for a smooth specialty drink or to bring the whole family for an authentic Mexican meal. We highly recommend putting Tu Familia on your date-night list and can’t wait to hear what you find to be your favorite!

Check out Tu Familia’s Facebook page (Tu Familia Mexican Restaurant) to stay up to date on all things special.

JoinBreakthroughT1DtoWalkinSupportof Type 1 Diabetes September 29

Join Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) to walk with over 4,000 people to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes (T1D) at this year’s Breakthrough T1D Walk. The walk will be held on Sunday, September 29 at Mahoney State Park and will start at 11:30 a.m. The walk aims to raise awareness for T1D and fundraise to accelerate T1D research to cure, treat and prevent T1D and its complications.

T1D is an autoimmune disease that is diagnosed in both children and adults and has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. For those with T1D, the pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone essential to turning food into energy. This means one must constantly monitor one’s blood-sugar level, inject or infuse insulin from a pump and carefully monitor eating and activity every single day.

By joining Breakthrough T1D Walk, community members will help create a movement to improve and change life with T1D, advancing breakthroughs on the way to cures. Individuals and teams can register to walk today at walk.BreakthroughT1D.org/omaha!

Questions about this event, including sponsorship opportunities, can be directed to Chris Dunn, Market Director, at (402) 214-0638 or cdunn@BreakthroughT1D.org.

This year, the foundation will honor four special individuals to be recognized at its 2024 event, Travis Meier, Kathy Runde, Terry Thomas and Stacia Thompson.

As Jennie Edmundson Foundation raises funds for the Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital Spirit of Courage Cancer Charitable Patient Care Fund through the JE Foundation, it reflects back on the number of patients and families it has been able to help and support the past 22 years. These funds have allowed Methodist Jennie Hospital patients to continue the treatments they may have stopped due to limited or no insurance.

Through the generosity and support of donors, the Cancer Charitable Patient Care Fund is available to assist these patients by paying for medications, treatments and deductibles, as well as everyday living expenses such as groceries, rent and gas.

To help support this event via the online auction bidding or to donate to “Fund-A-Need,” go to one.bidpal.net/soc2024/welcome. Project Harmony’s Back-to-School Screen Time Tips

As summer comes to an end and families prepare for the start of another school year, it is important to reestablish screen time limits. Creating appropriate rules and expectations around screen time may seem like a daunting task, but it is critical in keeping children safe online.

Helpful tips for families:

• Use a social media or technology contract. Make sure to have a conversation, so children can understand designated rules and have the opportunity to ask questions.

• Be clear with other parents. Ensure screen-time limits apply to other people’s houses.

• Have regular, ongoing conversations about online safety. A one-time discussion is not enough. Talk to children about what they like to do online and what apps their friends are using. This allows one to address issues as they arise, rather than being surprised by them.

• Monitor your child’s online footprint. Different age levels may need different levels of monitoring. This may mean reviewing downloaded apps, following one’s children on social media platforms or even doing spot checks of the child’s devices.

“Safety is a conversation and a shared responsibility among all of us,” says Project Harmony Executive Director Gene Klein. “It is important that we talk with our children and help them understand how to make responsible and safe choices about what they post and/or share.”

Project Harmony offers Online Safety training that specializes in educating parents, caregivers and educators with the knowledge and resources needed to protect children from online dangers including predators, cyber bullies and threats related to gaming, social networking and mobile devices. Register for the upcoming training on August 19 at ProjectHarmony.com.

As the back-to-school season approaches, MICAH House and the Florence M. Lakin Child Development Center are gearing up to support their students with essential school supplies. These organizations play a crucial role in the community by providing a nurturing environment and educational support to children from diverse backgrounds.

Items that will help these students thrive are backpacks, markers, crayons, construction paper and erasers. Consider making a donation.

As the MICAH House team prepares for the upcoming school year, it asks that community members come together to ensure that every child at MICAH House and the Florence M. New Class of Hometown Interns Embarks on

Adventure

22 college students from across Nebraska returned to their hometowns this May as members of Nebraska Community Foundation’s (NCF) 2024 Hometown Interns cohort.

A Hometown Intern is a current college student who has completed at least one year of schooling or other learning experience and lives at home for the summer. They are compensated for their work through an anonymous NCF donor. This year’s interns are serving NCF affiliated funds in 17 communities.

Hometown Interns began the summer at a retreat in Keith County where they connected with their peers and learned about AssetBased Community Development. Over the course of the summer, they will work alongside their supervisors and other members of their local affiliated fund on a mission to discover and unleash the assets in their community.

“This internship isn’t just about gaining experience,” said NCF Community and Cultural Impact Specialist Becky Boesen. “Together, we’ll explore roads less taken, lift-up hidden assets, celebrate the uniqueness of our places and co-create an experience alongside local affiliated funds that will add value to the future of both students and their communities.”

After five years of internships, the endeavor is showing inroads to ongoing people-attraction efforts, and dozens of interns have elected to remain in Nebraska, most of them in rural communities.

“Hometown Internships offer evidence for NCF’s longstanding belief that the key to bringing young Nebraskans back to our state is an invitation,” said NCF President and CEO Jeff Yost. “By extending to these students an opportunity to play a meaningful role in communitybuilding, we are telling them we value their contributions to our state’s future and reminding them they will always have a place in Nebraska.”

COX COMMUNICATIONS

Smart Tech Explodes in the Multifamily Industry

It’s nearly impossible not to notice the changing landscape in Omaha with the continued proliferation of new construction, much of which is in the extremely competitive multi-dwelling unit (MDU) sector. A 2024 survey by the National Multifamily Housing Council found that 87% of renters demand robust connectivity from the properties they live in—and, according to Rent.com, they’re willing to pay $38 more each month to have it. More choices for savvy renters means property owners and managers are challenged to manage rising operating costs while offering the latest and greatest tech to attract prospective residents and retain those they already have.

In the last decade, Cox has invested nearly $12 billion in its fiberpowered network, bringing access and choice to communities across all its markets. Now enter Cox Communities, a division of Cox Communications, which is making additional investments in smart technology to help address the needs of all stakeholders. While the latest technology must be added to older MDU properties to help them stay competitive, it’s often installed in new builds, which means our work also happens, quite literally, at ground level through longstanding relationships with local builders.

What is the Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers, at its essence, to a network of physical devices—phones, sensors and cameras, for example—connected to one another and which help owners and residents manage their experience from the curb to the couch. If you’ve rented a storage unit recently, you’re likely able to open the entrance gate through an app on your phone. In an apartment building or complex, you may use an app to access entry to a property, a garage or even an elevator. With IoT, nearly everything is at your fingertips.

Cox Communities has partnered with Level M, a provider of nextgeneration smart tech solutions for multifamily customers, to provide the most cutting-edge technology solutions, which leverage Cox’s fiber-powered network and more than 26 years of experience in the multifamily space. Level M partners with Cox to support the multifamily industry including:

• Offering comfort, convenience and control to residents—With a single app, residents can do everything from enter through a main gate, enter a hallway with a secured door, access a particular floor in the elevator and enter their apartment. Residents can also control their thermostat and lights, reducing their utility bills. Safety, security and convenience are in the palm of their hand from the start.

• Improving efficiency and property management—Gone are the days of triplicate carbon copies or a ring full of keys. Level M alleviates the need to manage property access on-site: Owners can now control everything via app or desktop and provide managers and workers an access code. Where a maintenance worker once had to make multiple trips to address a single trouble ticket, now they can access an apartment at a specified time through an app.

• Avoiding unexpected expenses for owners The average leak can cost an owner as much as $35k, and with insurance premiums and deductibles on the rise, it’s never been more important to mitigate the impact of leaks. Enter Smart Tech Leak Detection: Leaks will trigger an app or portal notification through a device placed on water heaters and pipes underneath sinks (some insurance companies offer a discount for leak protection). In addition, smart thermostats and lighting systems reduce energy consumption and lead to significant cost savings for both owners and residents.

• Making move-in a breeze for everyone—The revolutionary smart-building connectivity of IoT translates to unmatched reliability, affordability and flexibility. Gone are the days of scheduling and then waiting two weeks for a cable installer. With Cox’s pre-installed internet program, residents can be connected within minutes of move-in and enjoy fast, reliable internet—and a suite of smart apartment amenities—so they can be online on move-in day.

Of course, these are just a few examples of the many ways smart apartment technologies impact the growing MDU market, and more change is coming. The evolution and integration of artificial intelligence and virtual reality with existing infrastructure holds endless promise of what’s possible when it comes to supporting the extremely competitive housing industry. As developers shift to affordable single-family “build-to-rent” communities with the latest technology, Cox is helping owners of existing properties update their technology. Upgrading older properties with the latest Smart Tech enables them to remain relevant as a viable choice for renters and be a positive contributor in growing communities.

Omaha is growing, and the Smart Tech that feeds our multifamily homes is enhancing the rental experience across the board. As a partner, Cox Communities will continue to innovate while providing robust services, best-inclass connectivity, and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions to build a better future for all.

BUYING A HOME

Listing a home for sale or buying a new home can be stressful, now more than ever considering the housing market forecast. Expert opinion insists that the housing market will improve sooner than later, but there continues to be a delay in its uprising thanks to many economic factors, including inflation, which is slow to level.

Loyal Lending Services

The first thing homebuyers should do is get pre-approved with a mortgage lender to determine lending ability. Once the homebuyer understands possible lending options, the homebuyer can adjust plans, if needed. The loan officer will be able to help identify available options that achieve the homebuyer’s goals, which is where West Gate Bank® can help!

To start the pre-approval process, homebuyers should reach out to their bank and speak to a mortgage loan officer. A mortgage loan officer, such as those at West Gate Bank, can provide a link to a free homebuyer education class. This class provides valuable information for first-time homebuyers. It outlines the necessary steps to prepare for home ownership and teaches how to save for the down payment and closing costs. It also has information on building and achieving great credit scores.

A good way to plan for buying a house, without racking up too much debt, is to know and stay within a set budget. Wait to get furniture and appliances after the loan application is approved and one has closed on the mortgage. Do not accrue any new debt prior to or during the process of getting a mortgage loan.

What is a good timeline for financing a house? The answer is after one has completed the homebuyer education class and has determined he/she/they are ready to take on home ownership

Mortgage Loan Officer Amy Dang at West Gate Bank says, “Buying a house in the winter might help with bidding against fewer buyers due to lower demand.” Tips such as these are why West Gate Bank can be relied upon to not only provide homebuyers with loans options, but to also educate and inform homebuyers throughout every step of the process.

Tactful Trade School and Real Estate Education

Of the many educational sessions offered at estate school in East Omaha, the conversation on how to approach homeownership is one of the most important that REALTOR® members have with local consumers.

Amy Dang West Gate Bank

When buying a new home, buyers should consider their buying power, which includes their finances, timeline, and support system.

Understanding these three aspects can make or break a deal. Additionally, buyers should consider the functionality of spaces and their needs. Many times, buyers get distracted by finishes and cosmetics but forget to think through how their daily lives will be impacted. Questions like, "Are there too many stairs? Will the family buffet fit in the dining room? Is there a main-floor laundry room?" should be asked constantly throughout the search. Fortunately, when individuals attend a homebuying course at The { } Exchange, they will be provided with a functionality quiz to ensure they think through how they see themselves in their future space.

“I would advise anyone working towards becoming a homeowner (and afterward) to fully understand their current financial situation, including monthly budgets, debts, and other financial obligations,” says President & REALTOR® member of The { } Exchange, Angel Starks “Homeownership brings another level of financial responsibility, and we advise our Locale Community (clients of the Locale Real Estate Group) to always prepare financially, as we don’t want owners to become house-poor and live beyond their means.”

Life brings many unexpected challenges, and planning for all things real estate-related is imperative. The goal of homeownership begins way before the first showing or visit with a lender. Even if foreclosures or short sales are in the conversation, having expert support is crucial. Decisions around real estate starts with education and planning—both of which are options offered by The { } Exchange.

The greatest advice for anyone considering buying a property is to do it the right way; the right way to buy a house is with a REALTOR®. One should lean on local experts to help navigate such a high-cost purchase and consider items one may not know to ask about or how to handle. Contracts are usually six or more pages, so through sessions at The { } Exchange, consumers will be prepared to fully understand their rights and options as ready, willing and able buyers. This transparency and emphasis on education is why The { } Exchange is the best for all things real estate!
