There has been a big shift in recruiting and hiring trends, so businesses are figuring out how to set themselves apart in order to attract the best talent.

When you’re interviewing someone, you have to realize that you’re being interviewed too. Today’s professionals are harder to please. MUSE Design Program Recognizes DLR Group and Kimpton Cottonwood for Interior Design The MUSE Design Program has selected DLR Group, the design firm for the Kimpton Cottonwood Hotel in Omaha, as the recipient of one Platinum Award (Renovation) and three Gold Awards (Hotels & Resorts, Historic Restoration, and Hospitality) in the Interior Design category. The MUSE Design Program, created by the International Awards Associate (IAA), established the MUSE Design Awards to honor excellence in design.

Restored, renovated, and reimagined, the Kimpton Cottonwood resonates with a reverent respect for the former Blackstone Hotel’s historic legacy in Omaha. The hotel was built in 1915 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The project entailed historic renovation and 46,000 square feet of new construction to deliver an experiential luxury hotel with 205 guestrooms, two restaurants, three lounges, two ballrooms offering private outdoor terraces, an expansive fitness center, and a resort style (seasonal) outdoor pool and pool club.

DLR Group provided interior design services and partnered with architect Leo A Daly for the completion of the Kimpton Cottonwood Hotel project. The design goal was not recreation, but instead a celebration of the spirit and heritage of the original Blackstone Hotel. The fact that it is one of the fi rst Kimpton franchise properties led to a blending of old and new. The design maintains the original tile and hardwood flooring and includes meticulously restored design details such as the marble staircase, translucent photo mural of the Missouri River, and eighth floor ballroom with sweeping views of the city. The store will be located in Aksarben Village at 6750 Mercy Rd., STE 105. The approximately 2,002 square-foot Fleet Feet Omaha-Aksarben store will offer specialty running and walking shoes, insoles, apparel, and accessories to fit any lifestyle.

“Our Fleet Feet Omaha-Legacy store has been open in Omaha for over four years. However, we are excited to add a second location in Aksarben Village,” said Lori Borer. “Having a second location will provide additional convenience for our customers.”

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) Torch Awards for Ethics, formerly known as The BBB Integrity Awards, will return in 2022 to honor businesses and charities located in Metro Omaha, Southwest Iowa, the Kansas Plains, and South Dakota on September 21.

The Torch Awards for Ethics focus on a company’s demonstrated ethical business practices. Businesses and charities that have operated under the same ownership for three or more years and have an “A” rating with the BBB are eligible to apply. Independent panels of judges from the business, academic, and charitable arenas will select the award recipients. The BBB is introducing a simplified, digital application process that can be completed online. The event will begin on February 12 and run through March 28. Participants will track their movement on a platform called MoveSpring, an app that pairs with your phone or fitness tracker.

Their movement will help them progress through a journey to the Emerald City, learning tips and facts throughout the trip. The virtual challenge allows participants to engage in friendly competition with friends, family, and co-workers with a real-time step leaderboard.

In-person registrants for Trek Up the Tower 2022 will be automatically shifted to the highest level of virtual participation, which includes a t-shirt, medal, and participation in exclusive drawings for gift cards and Trek merchandise. MIDLANDS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Meet Tonee M. Gay, the executive director of the Midlands Community Foundation.

Tell us a little about your business. - Midlands Community Foundation (MCF) is a catalyst for lasting impact in Sarpy and Cass counties, giving opportunities to organizations and individuals so they can pursue their charitable goals. We help foster relationships, provide trust and transparency, and we are a reliable resource for our service area.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?

- In an attempt to lessen the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in our community, MCF established a Coronavirus Response Fund. As a community foundation, MCF designed the fund to complement the work of local public health, nonprofit, and government entities, and to expand local capacity to support individuals and families experiencing hardship because of the outbreak and related closures and disruptions. Within days of establishing this fund, monies were being distributed to provide emergency food, supplies, utility, and other financial help for the hardesthit households within Sarpy and Cass counties. MCF was able to help more than 50 nonprofit organizations.

Tell us a little about your family. - I have been happily married to Tim Gay for more than 30 years. We have three beautiful children— Matthew, Kathryn, and Nicholas; a new son-in-law, Alex; and a soonto-be daughter-in-law, Cassie, in 2022.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I love to play tennis. It is my release!

Who inspires you? - My husband. He is my partner, my strength, my voice of reason, my advocate, and my best friend.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - The quote came from my high school accounting teacher. She would say, “Bloom where you are planted.” There is a lot of opportunity in this world and every step in your life prepares you for the next one.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Team-player.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - Landscape architect. I would like to learn more about plants, landscape design, and how it supports the environment. My happy day is usually strolling in a garden center or nursery admiring all the beautiful plants, shrubs, and trees.

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - This is an obvious one! I have been actively involved with Midlands Community Foundation as a volunteer since 1994 and executive director since 2005.

MCF serves through its grants and discretionary gifts and has established over 160 charitable funds. We provide our donors and partners with high-quality service and engagement. As an organization, we are committed to transparency and accountability, and we operate with the highest standards of integrity and stewardship to ensure donor funds are effectively reinvested in improving the economic and social well-being of our community. MCF is proud to report that 91% of every dollar donated to the Foundation is used directly to supporting programming.

What is your favorite movie? - My go-to movie is When Harry Met Sally.

What is your favorite TV show? - Seinfeld.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?

- Business is hopping! My biggest challenge would definitely be managing my schedule and not letting my schedule manage me.

Tell us a little about your family. - I have an amazing wife of 14 years, Lori. She is an administrator for a nonprofit organization called EducationQuest Foundation. We have a beautiful daughter, Kate, who is in eighth grade at Beadle Middle School in Millard. She loves cheer and volleyball, and keeping us on our toes. We also have two elderly rescue dogs—Lacy, a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix, and Bella, a Papillon. My wife asked that I remind you to “Adopt, Don’t Shop!”

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - It would probably be meeting my wife and starting our family.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Spending time outside in the summer—maintaining our pool, doing yard work, taking care of my wife’s vegetable garden, and hosting fire pit nights with friends.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” Life is too short to worry about things that we have no control over.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Dedicated.

If you had a theme song, what would it be? - “Livin on a Prayer”

by Bon Jovi. To me, it has always symbolized hope and faith.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? - Flying for sure!

Meet Chris Jones, the founder and CEO of Loophire.

Tell us a little about your business. Loophire is a recruitment technology company that focuses on small- to mid-sized businesses to help them easily hire the best people quickly, at a price even the smallest company can afford. We have made an impact with the companies that don’t have the time, resources, or knowledge to hire efficiently, and it’s been very rewarding to see the success of the people we’ve helped them hire so far.

How did you get started in the business? - I began as a recruiter almost 10 years ago after working in the bar business for most of my 20s. I started in an entry-level role that grew over the years with multiple companies. I then founded my own headhunting agency, CJM Recruitment Partners. After six years in the business, I launched Loophire in February 2021.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? Being the sole operator of a business while simultaneously funding a technology startup during a pandemic was a challenge, to put it lightly.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?

- Bringing Loophire to life as the sole founder has definitely been my biggest challenge and accomplishment to date. It required years of learning, planning, setbacks, and hardships to get to where we are today. It has been a very educational and rewarding process.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?

- About 15 years ago when I realized I wanted to create things and build businesses that made life better for everyone. I wasn’t sure what that was at the time, I just knew I wanted to be the one building it.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I love being on the golf course.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I was a nightclub and casino host in Las Vegas for a couple of years in my 20s.

Who inspires you? - The entrepreneur. From idea to fruition is such a challenging thing that I have so much respect and admiration for.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - The Man in the Arena by Teddy Roosevelt.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Heart.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? - If I could manipulate time to have more of it, that would be wonderfully helpful.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - Sports agent. The movie Jerry Maguire inspired me when I was like 10 years old.

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - I’ve done quite a bit of work with Make-A-Wish over the years. It’s such a wonderful cause that brings positivity when families need it the most.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - I knew very little about the construction industry. I had to learn to read prints and all the components that go into construction.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - I decided in 2007 to go back to college and get a degree in business. I worked second shift in the warehouse at Pepsi and went to school in the mornings and did homework after work in the evenings. It made for some long days.

Hani Qassem, electrical engineer, passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

The FE exam is generally the first step in the process to becoming a professional licensed engineer. peRsonnel neWs Board names Kalisha Reed interim executive Director of Youth Emergency Services The Youth Emergency Services (YES) Board of Directors has named Kalisha Reed to lead the organization as the interim executive director. Reed steps in for Mary Fraser Meints, who left the organization January 3. She will serve in this capacity while the board conducts a search for a permanent replacement. YES programs will operate business as usual during this time.

“I’m excited to lead YES with the support of the YES Board of Directors, Trustees, and staff,” Reed said. “YES does amazing things in the community to help homeless and near-homeless youth, and we’re prepared to do even more great things moving forward.”

Reed brings many years of leadership experience at various levels – including executive director – to her new role.

She joined the YES team in October as the director of program services after serving as the executive director of Right Turn, which closed services in September 2021.

During her time at Right Turn, Reed managed a budget of nearly $2 million, and developed and implemented a strategic plan to increase monthly referrals by 10%. She also actively sought partnerships outside of Omaha and Lincoln to strengthen the organization’s mission and vision, and researched, implemented, and launched the program’s first cloud-based data management and case documentation system.

Prior to that, Reed served for five years with Children’s Respite Care Center (CRCC), first as the behavior Health Clinical manager/therapist and the final four years as the director of therapy operations. She also worked as a therapist and counselor with CHI Health, Heartland Family Service, Boys Town, and Girls, Inc. of Omaha.

Reed holds two Master’s degrees – one in Organizational Performance and the other in Clinical Counseling – from Bellevue University, where she has been an adjunct instructor since 2018. Her bachelor’s degree is in Pre-Law with a minor in business from the College of Saint Mary.

She is an advisor and board member of the Pre-Law Program at the College of Saint Mary as well as a member and mental health community liaison for the South Omaha Community Care Council.

Youth Emergency Services is the only nonprofit in Omaha with the sole mission to help homeless and near-homeless youth in our community.

Last year, YES provided support and services to hundreds of youth in the Omaha metro area. Many of these youth have been physically, emotionally or sexually abused, making it unsafe for them to return home. Without YES, these vulnerable young people cannot succeed independently. heartland hope Mission Moves into new Secondary Location in West Omaha Heartland Hope Mission has recently moved their Millard location into a new building in West Omaha at 15555 Industrial Rd., which will provide more o f f i c e a n d wa r e h o u s e space and allow them to better serve poor working families more effi ciently.

Their main location in South Omaha at 2021 U St. is still open to those in need for a food pantry.

Their new West Omaha location has updated their pantry operating hours by adding additional pantries every Saturday each month for families in need. They will now be open from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. during those pantry distribution dates. With their new expanded hours, Heartland Hope Mission needs more volunteers in West Omaha and has volunteer shifts available for the month of February. Volunteers are needed to distribute food, clothing, and hygiene products.

Heartland Hope Mission operates one of the largest food pantries in the state, however they are More Than a Pantry since they help families work toward self-sufficiency. nAlA Recaps 2021, celebrates a successful Year of Animal Rescue

Nine years ago in January, the Team Jack Foundation officially became a registered 5 0 1 ( C ) ( 3 ) n o n p ro f i t with the mission to fund childhood brain cancer research. Andy and Brianna Hoffman founded the Team Jack Foundation after discovering the treatment options for their son Jack when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. They knew the research they funded would likely not benefit their child but wanted to create a different path for children in the future. As of January 1, 2013, they had already raised over $300,000 for research. Today, the Foundation has raised over $9.3 million and has funded 12 national and local research projects and counting. This includes one drug that is on the path to becoming the FIRST ever drug developed specifically for children with brain cancer, DAY 101.

This doesn’t happen without the support of many, and, for that, Team Jack is forever grateful. The Foundation continues to be fueled by families affected by childhood brain cancer in Nebraska and across the United States. They are the reason for the fight.

project harmony Raises Awareness for child sex trafficking, shares signs to look For January was National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and Project Harmony says that there’s no better time to educate yourself on the vital issue of child sex trafficking.

National Center for Missing and Exploited Children responded to 10,719 reports of possible child sex trafficking in 2021. Although this number is staggeringly high, it also represents all the people who recognized the signs of this crime and took action to report it.

Some signs of child sex trafficking include: a child in possession of large amounts of cash, prepaid cards, hotel keys, or multiple cell phones; the child’s ID being held by another person, or not having any ID; signs that the child has been coached when talking to people, letting others speak for them, or looking at others before they speak; tattoos that indicate money or ownership, such as “$” or barcodes; or evidence that the child has been living out of a suitcase, at motels, or in a car. stephen center’s hearts that heal Donation Drive to take place February 7-18 With the help of community partners, Stephen Center is celebrating Valentine’s Day by encouraging the public to show some love to the homeless through the Hearts that Heal donation drive. The event will be held February 7-18.

“Stephen Center relies on donations of hygiene items, coffee, cereal, and more to care for hundreds of people on our campus every day,” Executive Director Michael Wehling said. “Winter is usually a slower time for donations, so we can use all the support we can get.”

Stephen Center needs donations of: paper towels; toilet paper; over-the-counter medications (ibuprofen, acetaminophen); cough drops; coffee; cereal; feminine hygiene products; hand sanitizer; and disinfectant wipes.

Girl Scout Troop #64224 at MICAH House is gearing up for another cookie season beginning in early February. Last year, their troop sold to all 50 states, and made national news by selling 27,196 boxes! This is quite a feat for the troop who sold less than 1,000 boxes their first year in 2018. The theme for this year is to pay-it-forward. MICAH House is encouraging folks to get two boxes, then make someone’s day by giving them one.

MICAH House is proud to offer a Girl Scout troop to school-age girls living at the homeless shelter. Unlike many traditional troops, their meetings are held where the girls eat, sleep, and live. Some girls choose to continue with the MICAH House troop even after their families have found safe and stable housing. This Girl Scout experience can help girls gain confidence, practice leadership, and learn life skills. They currently have 10 girls in the program aged 11 and under. Child Saving Institute (CSI) is set to host its largest fundraiser of the year, Cabaret 2022, on Saturday, May 7, at the Embassy Suites Omaha La Vista Hotel & Conference Center. Currently serving over 150 participants a week, volunteers are the heart of HETRA. Florence home healthcare center Receives $10K coViD-19 Vaccine grant President and CEO of Midwest Geriatrics, Inc., Lois Jordan, is pleased to announce Florence Home Healthcare Center has been selected to receive a $10,000 grant through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Vaccine Equity and Access Program (VEAP) to increase COVID-19 and influenza vaccine confidence and access among older adults.

The $10,000 grant was offered as part of a national partnership between LeadingAge, a national association of nonprofit aging services providers, and CDC partner Community Catalyst to strengthen vaccine education through community outreach and community-provider coalitions.
