FOCUSING ON YOUR BRAND Great Brands That Compete On Value: Harness The Power Of Their People Chances are, you’ve heard the phrase “teamwork makes the dream work” used in a professional setting. Although used frequently enough to toe the cliché line, it really is true. Synergy is essential, but I’d like to offer another angle to consider: If you’ve attained that within your team, share the news about what makes your personnel special with your fellow community members who constitute the
local marketplace. A business/organization is only as good as the team that runs it, with those people being its most valuable asset. These are the individuals who are responsible for performing the mission-critical tasks within an organization, whether the face of the organization and the ones who are in front of current and potential customers or those behind the scenes/screens. Either way, they are making the impression that will be remembered long past the interaction strictly for the purpose of conducting business. Thus, they are a valuable part of your brand, breathing life into its personality - a construct that should be carefully shaped and developed upon over time. Brand personality is defined as “a set of human characteristics that are attributed to a brand name. A brand personality is something to which a consumer can relate…it refers to the outcome of all the consumer’s experiences with a brand. In other words, it’s the weighted average of previous impressions. In the consumer’s mind, these impressions merge to form an overall concept of what to expect from a brand.” The brand personality – its distinct core traits – is what makes a business/ organization recognizable, remembered, and relatable; one that people can identify with on a personal level. This connection when done right is worth its weight in gold. We all gravitate towards certain personalities, and the same is true with brands attracting consumers. Without a doubt, your people and the talent you have within your organization are an integral part of your branding efforts, contributing to the sum of all that makes up its unique personality. I’ve said it before (many times, as I’m sure our loyal readers are well aware), and I’ll say it again (because I believe in the power of consistent messaging) – People do business with who they know and like. The relationships

you are able to build The brand personality – its distinct within the community core traits – is what makes a or communities in business/organization recognizable, which you do business remembered, and relatable; one will ultimately determine your long- that people can identify with on a term success. In terms personal level. of familiarity with a business owner, management, and employees alike, those who are visible and well known in their community and among their target market have a leg up on the competition. While there are many ways you could make an introduction or increase the comfort level of making contact, one of the easiest is to familiarize the community with the faces, stature/tenure/positions, expertise, qualifications, achievements, community contributions, etc. within your team. By sharing your personnel news, you are making a valuable, no-pressure introduction before the actual shaking of hands, moving the call from a cold one into somewhat warmer territory. Even if just to educate or praise, personnel news is a great tool for branding, similar to the power of networking. There are a lot of factors that influence our actions and choices regarding with whom we do business. However, in making the decision between two or more options, we are much more inclined to choose one where we know someone personally, are familiar or connected with someone there in some way, or have been referred by someone we know and trust. It’s one of the most compelling factors, in my opinion. In closing, I encourage you to take the opportunity to spotlight your team when warranted and acquaint those in our community with who they are and what makes them special. An effective way to do just that would be to send us your personnel news for consideration in one of our upcoming publications. And of course, make sure to check out the personnel news in this month’s issue and familiarize yourself with some of the talented professionals in the area! On-Site Consultation Program Helps Businesses Identify Safety, Health Hazards The Nebraska Department of Labor provides the On-Site Safety and Health Consultation Program at no cost to Nebraska employers in general industry and construction. Using this free consultation service, businesses can find out about potential hazards at their worksites, improve their occupational injury and illness prevention programs, and even qualify for a one-year exemption from routine OSHA inspections. Well-trained, professional staff from the Nebraska Department of Labor consult with employers on-site, though limited services away from the worksite are available. Primarily targeted at smaller businesses, the program is completely separate from any OSHA inspection effort. No citations are issued or penalties imposed. The only obligation for employers is to correct serious job safety and health hazards in a timely manner. Information gathered during consultations is kept confidential. Participation in the program helps businesses: • Comply with federal and state safety and health requirements • Recognize and remove hazards • Protect workers from injury and illness • Prevent loss of life at the worksite • Limit equipment damage and productivity losses • Improve employee morale To learn more, go to dol.nebraska.gov/Safety.

On June 19th, Lincoln Premium Poultry’s groundbreaking in Fremont for Costco’s first-ever poultry processing plant, hatchery and feed mill facility took place. Projected to open in April 2019, the $300-million project is expected to generate an overall economic impact of $1.2 billion annually, create approximately 800 new jobs and connect Costco to a dedicated network of producers in eastern Nebraska. The Lincoln Premium Poultry facility will utilize the latest technology to process an expected 2 million chickens a week for sale in Costco stores. Lincoln Premium Poultry joins a critical mass of agricultural-based companies that call Nebraska and the Greater Omaha region home. Statewide, one-in-four jobs is related to agriculture. Throughout the region, livestock and food processing industries employ nearly 20,000. Complementing the region’s existing industries, the farmer network needed for a facility of this scale brings an opportunity for farmers to diversify their portfolios and expand existing operations. Over the past year, the retail giant has worked with a multitude of partners to land the facility in the Fremont area. Those partners include the Greater Fremont Development Council, City of Fremont, Greater Omaha Chamber Economic Development Partnership, Nebraska Department of Economic Development, Nebraska Department of Agriculture and Alliance for the Future of Agriculture in Nebraska.

“Our Commitment to Our Community”
The award was presented at their Shoppes at Aksarben store by State Senator Sara Howard and Nebraska Retail Federation president Jim Otto on June 20th. The award includes an all expenses paid trip to the 2017 America’s Retail Champion competition in Washington D.C, July 17-19 sponsored by the National Retail Federation. The purpose of the Nebraska Retail Champion/America’s Retail Champion competition is to emphasize the huge contributions local retailers make to their communities. They pay local taxes, create local jobs, sponsor local charities, and collect the sales tax that is due on each retail purchase while their out of state online competitors do none of those. The Green Spot (TGS; greenspotomaha.com) opened in January 2012 with 1,300 square feet of retail space, located on 72nd & Pacific Streets in Omaha at the Shoppes of Aksarben. Over the years, TSG has added full-service grooming, an e-commerce website, Omaha’s first mobile food truck for dogs, and expanded into the corner bay next to the original space, almost tripling the square footage and adding self-serve dog wash areas. In 2014, TGS was named the Small Business of the Year for Congressional District 2 by the Nebraska District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration. TGS understands how important supporting the community is and they make every effort to be as involved as possible, giving back and supporting local organizations in many different ways.

BUSINESS NEWS Novozymes Unveils $36M Investment in Blair
OneWorld Northwest Adds New Clinic
Less than five years after Novozymes opened a state-of-the-art advanced manufacturing facility in Blair, Governor Pete Ricketts recently announced that the company has selected the site for its most recent expansion efforts in North America. The company’s new $36 million investment in the facility, which produces enzymes for renewable fuels, will increase the plant’s capacity to meet growing needs within the bioscience industry and global biofuels market.
OneWor ld Comm unity Health Centers has officially opened an additional clinic space at OneWorld Northwest, located at 4229 North 90th St. in Omaha.
Since 2012, production capacity in Nebraska’s biofuels industry increased by 7.8 percent. Nebraska is the number two ethanol producer in the nation and produces more than 2 billion gallons annually, second only to Iowa. Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois produce nearly half of the 15.2 billion gallons of ethanol generated each year in the United States. The company has hired more than 100 local contractors to install additional production equipment and water cooling units at the facility, where work is currently underway. Company officials worked with both state and local economic development partners to expand in Blair, including the Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED), Omaha Public Power District (OPPD), Gateway Development Corporation and the Greater Omaha Chamber Economic Development Partnership. While the company’s North American presence includes its headquarters in Franklinton, NC, and 10 additional facilities in the United States and Canada, Novozymes’ Blair plant currently serves as its only American facility dedicated to the growing biofuel industry.
With the new expansion, patients will have access to a second Quick Sick urgent care clinic location, which will include both medical and dental services. The new medical clinic will be open evenings and weekends. The new clinic space will be unveiled during an open house reception on Tuesday, July 11 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at OneWorld Northwest. The public is invited to attend the open house for desserts, beverages and tours of the remodeled space. “We’re excited to be able to offer our patients two convenient options when they need urgent medical or dental care,” Andrea Skolkin, CEO of OneWorld, said. “Instead of having to schedule an appointment or travel to our South Omaha campus, patients can be seen right away at OneWorld Northwest.” For more infor mation about the expansion, visit www. The award recognizes HRAM for outstanding accomplishments in 2016. The EXCEL award can be earned at four levels: bronze, silver, gold and platinum, and each level has a prescribed set of requirements and accomplishments that must be met. Membership retention, advancing the human resource profession, student chapter growth, and providing more strategic programming were goals identified by HRAM at the beginning of 2016. Through thoughtful and thorough internal initiatives, the organization achieved all four goals. “We are thrilled to receive the Excel Award because it validates the significant efforts made by our dedicated staff and volunteers to support and engage Omaha’s HR community,” said Kelli Lieurance, an attorney at Baird Holm, board president during the time that these goals were achieved. The board’s current president, Virginia Kiviranta, a staffing manager for Noll Human Resources, says that the organization will continue to strive to advance the local human resource profession and the people they serve through development and networking opportunities. The award will be announced to the HRAM membership at their program on July 11. HRAM will also receive recognition in SHRM publications and at conferences. CLIENT SPOTLIGHT
A Uniquely Different When Darren Kinney and Jason Cunningham came together to start Talon Steel Buildings in 2011, they had several goals in mind. They wanted to offer a uniquely different building experience, with the ability to perform the entire project from the dirt work to the finishing touches on the building. With the vision to transform a metal building into whatever type of space a client needed, in addition to the usual commercial and industrial purposes that preengineered metal buildings are well-known for, they sought to broaden their horizons into projects which included office and living space as well. Furthermore, with the ability to incorporate electrical, plumbing, heating control, and even in-floor heat, they knew there was great potential in what they were able to create. Thus, their tagline: “Whatever your perfect building is, we can build it!”

Centris Federal Credit Union is a memberowned financial institution providing a full array of products and services for consumers and businesses. Dawn Gonzales is Vice President, Community Development at Centris. Tell us a little about your business. - We are a full-service, locally owned credit union with ten branches operating in the Omaha and Council Bluffs metro area, and one branch each in North Platte and Grand Island. We have been in operation since 1934 and pride ourselves on superior service and that decisions are made locally. As a member of the strategic leadership and marketing teams, I oversee public and media relations, corporate sponsorships and donations and community involvement. How did you get started in the business? - I got started in the business over 20 years ago when I was working at New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union in Albuquerque, which is now Nusenda Federal Credit Union. My husband and I are Omaha natives, and relocated there for his job. It was a great opportunity and I ended up being there for nearly six years. When we transitioned back to Omaha, I never thought I would work for a credit union again, as my position was a specialized role in marketing. But lo and behold, I spent a year and a half at HDR, then accepted a position at Centris Federal Credit Union and have been here for 15 years now! What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - Striking the right balance between my work and personal life. It’s never 50/50 it seems, because at times you’ll need to put more into one side and the other will have to give. But I think it’s important to remember to be yourself, and that you are not your job. What has been your most important achievement professionally? Taking advantage of the learning and growth opportunities that have been available to me, and assisting with the growth of the companies where I’ve worked and giving back in the communities where I’ve lived. Tell us a little about your family. - My husband Paul and I have been married 24 years this year! We have two daughters; one who will be entering her junior year at UNL and one who will be a senior in high school. We also have a dog named Maisy, a Nebraska Humane Society rescue; we think she’s a Bichon Frise/Shih Tzu mix but aren’t 100% sure. What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Surviving breast cancer, and celebrating my 5-year cancer-free milestone. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I enjoy dining out, and my girls and I like to craft. Anything with my family! What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I was the Benson Bunny! I’m an alumni and was the official mascot my senior year. What local non-profit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - I am president-elect for the Susan G. Komen Great Plains board of directors. My mom was a breast cancer survivor as well, and I’ve been involved with the organization for more than 10 years. I’ve also been involved with the Nebraska Human Society for the past 15 years, and have been on the Friends Forever Guild board for 6 years now. Others I’m involved with are the BBB Integrity Awards committee, Sarpy County Chamber Women of Wisdom Planning Committee, Downtown Rotary and the University of Nebraska Women’s Leadership Network. What is your favorite local restaurant? - La Casa Pizzeria. If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - Email: dgonzales@centris.org; Website: centrisfcu.org.
Your friends get it... Your colleagues read it... The competition is in it.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - Worry doesn’t change anything. If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - Nursing. I admire nurses so much. I think they are some of the most kind-hearted and caring people. They also are willing to do a lot of jobs that other people are unwilling to do. What local non-profit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - Arbor Day Foundation; that is one of the wonderful things about working for Lied Lodge and Arbor Day Farm. Our ultimate mission is to positively impact our world. Planting trees is something everyone can get behind and do themselves. If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? - Chef Ina Garten. I love her recipes and she seems very laidback, so I think we would have fun! If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - You are welcome to contact me by email at cvannostrand@ arbordayfarm.org. Or, visit our website at www.liedlodge.org.

How did you get started in the business? - I worked in radio for 15 years and then had an opportunity to move into a copywriter role at a Lincoln advertising company. It was a great opportunity that allowed me to use my advertising skills and broadcast experience in a new way. It was a creative agency environment encompassing all media where I worked for 16 years. When the opportunity with Lied Lodge presented itself, I was excited to again switch gears to focused promotion of one organization.

With a winning combination of home and business class print solutions, the team of professionals at Cartridge World can help you save up to 30% off big box store prices while you enjoy the brand selection you want, the quality products you need, and the unsurpassed value you simply can’t find anywhere else. Andy Neil is the President and owner of the local Cartridge World franchise. Tell us a little about your business. - Cartridge World is your local expert for anything printing! It’s all we do, allowing us to specialize in printers, printer repair and service (maintenance to extend the life of your equipment), and what most associate us with, printer cartridges. We’ve been in Lincoln for almost 13 years and expanded into Omaha last year. By understanding our customer’s specific needs, we’re able to develop solutions for them. Whether you’re a large or small business or a consumer and occasional printer, we work hard to earn your business and save you money. Environmentally friendly, quality driven and service proud! How did you get started in the business? - I was looking for a new challenge and started to research different business options. Cartridge World was new to the U.S. (they started in Australia) and through my due diligence, I discovered an unmet need in our market. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - Fighting the ‘after-market’ stigma. Many of us grew up hearing if it’s too good to be true, it is. So when potential customers hear we can save them money, provide the same quality while keeping harmful plastics out of the landfills, they are skeptical. What has been your most important achievement professionally? Staying true to my values and beliefs in all aspects of my professional life. I’ve always felt it’s important to treat everyone you meet with respect – employees, customers, competitors – the way you want to be treated. Tell us a little about your family. - I have a beautiful, very caring and compassionate wife, Dee Dee. We have three wonderful daughters; Devin, who stays home with our extraordinary grandsons Lane and Lawson and is married to our great son-in-law Buck; Miranda, who’s studying in London right now and attends Wash U in St. Louis; and our youngest, Mia, who will be starting UNL this fall and is responsible for every family pet we have - Sadie and Jack Jack! What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Losing my son Adam at 15 to juvenile diabetes. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Spending time with my family. If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - A commercial pilot. What local non-profit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - Chapter 25 (formerly Lincoln Kids Against Hunger, www.kahlincoln.org). Our family co-founded the Lincoln satellite. It’s a great organization driven by volunteers who put together simple, nutritious food packs that are distributed locally, nationally and internationally to orphanages, schools, churches for those suffering severe malnourishment. It’s a hands-on opportunity to really make a difference with just a little bit of your time. If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? - Leonardo DiVinci. I want to know how he tapped into the full power of his brain! Five Nines leverages technology to drive business success, utilizing a unique service model to deliver IT solutions tailored to fit each client. James Bowen is the co-founder of Five Nines.
Callfor Joan for a custom solution! Tell us a little about your business. - Five Nines was established in Contact Mike McGavran a custom solution! 2006 and has since grown to become Nebraska’s largest and most 402.850.5384 MrMcGavran@paychex.com Managed IT Services company, with multiple jkurtenbach@paychex.com nationally-recognized Joan Kurtenbach offices across the state. Our mission is “To love what we do and be the best at it,” and I believe that reflects us accurately. Our purpose is to increase productivity and manage risk while planning and adhering to budgets.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - Without a doubt, it’s been the growth and maturity of Five Nines outpacing my own ability to contribute at an executive level. I’ve always been a business IT consultant. That’s what I know, and what I do. Founders of companies most often look more like technicians of sorts, with a singular marketable skill, than fully-developed and educated businesspeople. As Five Nines grew, my proper place in the company rose above my education. Since I love Five Nines, and they are stuck with me, it was my obligation to my staff to become a more educated leader for the business. To that end, I completed Nebraska’s Executive MBA program out of the UNO campus. It was the best education I’ve ever had.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Five Nines is going strong 10+ years in, providing great careers for our staff and critical services to our clients. Tell us a little about your family. - My wife Michelle, of 15 years, stays at home with our children, Alexis (7) and Kaden (10). We also have a strange variety of animals, primarily due to me just having newts as a kid…
It’s small things in life that count.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - My son was born 10 weeks premature the week after Nick Bock and I agreed to create Five Nines. Our world was turned upside-down as our new family moved into the NICU and Michelle left her career to become the mother our child required (Kaden lives with Cerebral Palsy). Our family needed Five Nines right when it happened. I’ll always see that as fate and I’m forever grateful. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I’m still getting used to that concept. Right now, we are in that wonderful time where our kids can participate in activities and we are enjoying every minute of that. What are you the most proud of? - Five Nines is a truly great company with fantastic people who choose to give it their all each and every day.

URETHANE CONTRACTING SERVICES Urethane Contracting Services, LLC provides commercial roofing services utilizing a proprietary coating system manufactured by Conklin. Dennis Allen is the owner of Urethane Contracting Services, LLC, a local contractor affiliated with Heartland International, Inc. Tell us a little about your business. - We were the first urethane company in the Omaha, Lincoln and the surrounding areas and have been in business now for 39 years. The spray-in-place foam system is an insulating material that is placed over the top of flat commercial roofs. In most cases we don’t have to tear off the existing roofing system, or expose the interior to the elements, so it’s very cost-effective and there’s little-to-no downtime for the business. It’s also incredibly energy efficient; with the insulation properties and the final membrane added being white, it reflects 85-90% of the sun’s rays. Our offerings come with up to an 18-year non-prorated warranty. How did you get started in the business? - As a high school teacher with plenty of free time during the summer, I began selling Conklin products. When they introduced this line of roofing materials, I decided to start my own business, and it really took off from there. Now we train new contractors on installing the systems we specialize in too, with a training area in the shop dedicated to that part of our operations. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - Initially, 39 years ago, nobody had heard of this system so I was introducing a brand new product to the area. Now that it’s well known because of buildings like the super dome, with so much growth the challenge has shifted to labor. I’m always looking for contractors to bring on! What has been your most important achievement professionally? The success of my business, but also being able to share my experience and impart my knowledge to those who are new to the business so they don’t have to go through the pitfalls that we did. Tell us a little about your family. - My wife Susan and I are also coming up on our 40th anniversary next year. We have two sons, Patrick (32) and Cory (30), who both worked with the company through high school and college. Now, one is an investment banker in Atlanta, GA and the other runs a company out of Dallas, TX that designs, builds, installs and tears down trade show booths nationwide. They both apply their strong Midwest work ethic to their current jobs and I couldn’t be more proud. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I collect cars, specifically Mustangs, so anything related to that. I’m also lucky to do a lot of traveling at this point in my life - Europe, Mexico, Thailand, and Israel have been the most recent adventures! What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - Do what you say you’re going to do and show up! If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Christian. If you had a theme song, what would it be? - A BTO classic, “Taking Care of Business.” What local non-profit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - I’m involved with CBMC and also support Harbor Ministries. What is your favorite local restaurant? - The Boiler Room; I appreciate the farm to table aspect and the setting is very cool. If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? - Warren Buffet. If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - Phone: (402) 560-8660; Email: dennisallensd@windstream.net.

SANDLER TRAINING
402-403-4334
by Karl Schaphorst, President www.karlschaphorst.sandler.com
No Mind Reading! “So, Nick,” said the prospect, “you have a very interesting product.” Nick wasn’t sure of what to say. Is the guy interested or not? Or is he just trying to blow me off? “I appreciate what you’re saying,” responded Nick, “but what do you mean by ‘have a very interesting product’?” “Well, it’s just that. If you mean specifically, well, it’s well engineered and thought out. I can see many places where we can use it.” To which Nick replied, “Oh. I’m not sure what you mean. What places?” He stopped and stared at the prospect, who then noted, “One place we really need this is in the front office.” “Why there?” Nick asked innocently. P: “I can see how this would cut down on our outstanding accounts receivable almost immediately. Just cutting that from 120 days to 90 days would do wonders for our cash flow.” N: “I guess that’s the only place then, cutting down on outstanding receivables?” P: “No, not just there. The people in the field could definitely use this to process orders.” N: “How would they use it for that?” P: “One of the biggest problems we have is that no one in the office can read their handwriting, and by the time someone can translate it, it’s an easy two weeks. With this, they just hand the disk to the office manager.” N: “I don’t suppose that you would consider buying more than one?” P: “Buy just one? No. We need at least two right away.” N: “What would you like me to do?” The RESULT: Here’s a question—just who is making the presentation in the above exchange? Nick just keeps asking questions, and what is the result? The dream of every salesperson—a self-qualifying prospect that is deeply involved in selling the product to himself. Salespeople are not hired for their ability at mind reading. Unfortunately, when prospects make statements such as those directed to Nick, the common salesperson’s reaction is to agree with the prospect and hope the prospect keeps talking. And if there is nothing forthcoming from the prospect, the salesperson keeps the conversation going, not by asking what the prospect meant by some statement, but by filling in with more words. Nick just kept asking the reasons for the statements the prospect was making. It is easier and more productive to ask questions than to try to guess what the prospect wants to hear. Asking questions is always safe; the sales professional never backs him/herself into a corner and the prospect keeps talking and selling themselves on why they should buy from you. That’s right, you salespeople, keep your mouths shut! Your goal is to learn what the prospect is thinking. You can only do that by asking what the prospect’s statements mean. How often have you thanked a prospect when he/she complimented your product? Thanking a prospect is appropriate, but then you should go further and ask why he/she is complimenting your product. You will then discover why your product is being considered for purchase. In addition, when the prospect explains why he/she is complimenting your product, he/she will be reinforcing the reasons for buying. The prospect will be telling you the benefits of buying what you are selling. Having a prospect tell you why he/she should buy your product is infinitely more powerful than you telling the reasons why, even if they are the same reasons. At the end of the story, Nick asks a very simple question, “What would you like me to do?” Consider what this prospect will probably do, just having told Nick how great his product is and how he sees it most effectively used. You can’t know what a prospect means unless you ask. Therefore, ask the questions and stop with the mind reading! Local Organizations Grant $30K to Pediatric AML Research N eb r a s k a - b a s e d Sammy’s Superheroes Foundation and Lolo’s Angels have teamed up to raise $30,000 to fund a research project aimed at finding modern treatments for pediatric Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). The “Target Pediatric AML” (TpAML) project is the largest, most comprehensive and methodical disease biology study ever conducted in pediatric cancer, and in acute myeloid leukemia. It is also the Children’s Oncology Group’s (COG) highest potential, greatest need AML-related research project. This focused discovery effort is sorely needed due to the complexity and diversity of this challenging disease, which remains one of the poorest prognoses in childhood cancers. It will leverage large-scale, deep, genomic sequencing of 1,000 banked patient samples, identifying new subtypes, drivers, enablers, unique identifiers (biomarkers) and vulnerabilities. This process will uncover new therapeutic targets, which will be mapped to all existing and emerging targeted agents, resulting in a much-needed, expanded treatment arsenal. The $30,000 grant is the first grant given away under Sammy’s Superheroes’ Sidekick Program. The Sidekick Program is designed to provide groups that want to raise money for childhood cancer the ability to offer tax benefits to their donors without having 501c3 standing. Sammy’s Superheroes Foundation (sammyssuperheroes.org) is a 501c3 non-profit whose mission is to raise money for life-saving research that will lead to modern treatments for all types of childhood cancer. American Heart Association Encourages Heart Healthy Summer Summer is here - which means high temps that not only encourage people to head outdoors for barbecues and activities, but that can also be harmful to your heart health. This summer, the American Heart Association wants to encourage you to protect your heart by following these steps: Staying hydrated helps your heart pump blood more easily through the vessels to the muscles, so it doesn’t have to work as hard. Exercising in the summer heat can be dangerous. Drink up and stay hydrated – preferably with water. Dress for the heat; wear lightweight, light-colored clothing in breathable fabrics such as cotton as well as breathable socks and shoes. Wear water-resistant sunscreen and take regular breaks. When making delicious meals that are also heart-healthy, opt for fish and chicken breasts instead of red meat. Take advantage of summer seasonal foods by serving up a salad or side dishes filled with raw fruits and veggies. Two of the greatest risks of spending too much time outdoors during the summer are heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If you experience any of these symptoms, cool yourself off with water or shade and call 911 if they persist: high fever (above 104° F); hot, dry, or red skin; fast or weak pulse; fast or shallow breathing; irrational behavior or extreme confusion; seizure or unconsciousness. For more information please visit www.heart.org/HEARTORG.

The Nebraska Kidney Association was awarded $4,000 to purchase a new machine to expand their KEDS (Kidney Early Detection Screenings) program into central and western Nebraska. The Nebraska Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation was awarded $1,000 to provide speakers for their new state fair program. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide direct support for health programs whose impact would be vital to individuals and the community. These initiatives would not otherwise be possible through CHC-NE’s annual workplace giving campaigns or through current charity resources. The grants are distributed from the interest and dividends earned each year. The CHC-NE Board of Directors is responsible for the Foundation’s management, including oversight of the distribution of funds through a grant-making process. Are you a homeowner who is thinking about doing some projects around the house yet this summer or into the fall? It might be major renovations or a minor improvement, but odds are that many will answer “yes” to this question. Well, no time better than the present to get going, and for those who are looking for inspiration, direction, motivation, resources, or all of the above, here are a few tips and suggestions from the pros! Design Elements Thanks to design, any space in your home or aspect of your property can be elevated, aesthetically and functionally. Most often remodeling projects are done when both need to be updated, but as a rule of thumb, both should always be taken into consideration regardless of one or the other being the reason for the project. Anything that gets a lot of use in the home or places where a lot of time is spent are generally the most common areas of focus when it comes to home renovations. In this particular setting, a lot of enjoyment is derived from one’s surroundings for a variety of reasons--relaxing, entertaining, specific use of space, etc. Kitchen and bath remodels are atop the list of popular remodeling projects, with benefits such as return on investment, additional square footage, better use of space and function, becoming more updated, and selection of enhanced design features specific to the homeowner. Although master bedrooms tend to fall further down the list, when working on a master bath it’s a natural progression to give that bedroom a makeover as well. The entire suite then becomes a sanctuary and place of peace and solitude, which is quite nice. With any area of your home that gets the most use or is highly-trafficked, it’s important that the design is functional, and that you’re investing in quality materials that are just as durable as they are attractive.
Danny Reynolds Modern Concepts Tile
“Quality of materials is really important, as is the proper installation of those materials,” emphasizes Danny Reynolds of Modern Concepts Tile. “Oftentimes what you’d buy at the big box stores to get a deal is just the opposite, because it will end up costing you more to replace sooner. Alternatively, with quality-checked materials that come directly from experienced suppliers and distributors combined with professional installation, you can be confident that the job will be done to the highest standards, without any headaches to deal with during or afterward.
Home remodeling is very much about the personal touches, so just about every project is different. With tile, so much can be done with design. Ultimately the goal is that with extended use, whatever improvement to your home that you’ve invested in stays looking and working just as nice as it does on day one. While with some aspects of a home wear and tear is unavoidable, there are many great products on the market that are engineered to hold up quite well, with tile being one that truly can stand the test of time even with frequent

use. An experienced professional with working knowledge of materials and techniques will be able to advise you on the best options for your project in terms of design, durability, care and maintenance required, or any other variables that the average person might not take into account. It is worth paying an extra dollar or two per square foot for something that will look much better and for a much longer period of time. I can’t stress enough that proper installation and materials are both critical to longevity.” In agreement, Jason Tidblom of Ceramic Tileworks Center adds, “Place your trust in a reputable company; let them know what your preferences are and exactly what you have in mind, and they’ll be able to tell you about all of the options you’ll have. Everyone takes advice from friends and family, which is great, but it is even better to seek advice from knowledgeable suppliers and professionals. Also, do not always believe what you read on the internet about these projects. Not every method applies to every product.”
Jason Tidblom
Ceramic Tileworks Indeed, oftentimes in the excitement of Center exploring the possibilities, homeowners do not always look at the big picture in many ways. For that exact reason, enlisting the services of a professional designer can be immensely helpful, and bringing on the professionals who will be performing the work as early on as possible is also advised. At the completion of a remodel you do not want there to be a disconnect with existing elements. Work done in one area affects the rest of the home and a long-range plan is something one must keep in mind. With a keen eye for noticing and introducing things to you that others will not, why not take advantage?
As a prime example, while it’s easy to get caught up in all of the pretty materials and finishes, you might forget about the lighting, which will showcase them nicely and can really transform the space. (Since we’re on the topic, if you’re doing anything remotely related to the electrical system or that is powered by electricity, have a licensed electrician evaluate your home’s electrical panel to ensure it can safely handle any and all upgrades. Also, when selecting your fixtures, it’s wise to choose a quality fixture over the bargain-priced option – again, you get what you pay for with lighting just as is commonly cautioned with your other big ticket items.) Furthermore, keep in mind that while the world of HGTV has brought much attention to home remodels and is a source of inspiration for many, it has also given way to certain false expectations. When what is perhaps a months-long process from start to completion is made to look like mere weeks, that’s not likely to be congruent with reality. And, if it indeed does take that length of time, quality and craftsmanship may be compromised. High-Tech Home Improvements Given all of the amazing home technology that’s on the market today, chances are it’s on your radar for future upgrades. Specifically regarding possibilities for controlling your home’s systems, Pat Killeen of Engineered Controls and Control Depot advises, “Every residential remodel project starts with a dream. Homeowners may enjoy their homes, but over time they would like things to be different. The home no longer reflects the owner’s taste or lifestyle. Maybe the family’s dynamics have changed or making the home more environmentally friendly is a priority. In order to turn those dreams into reality, detailed planning is required. Would you like to use the Pat Killeen current space differently, or are you looking to Engineered Controls add innovation and technology to your home? and Control Depot We offer a whole host of Honeywell products that will improve your home’s comfort and help you operate your home

more efficiently. From the most state-of-the-art thermostats and zoning systems to whole-house air cleaning systems, whole-house humidification and dehumidification systems, security and video systems; everything is geared to make homes more energy-efficient and secure. An option like Total Connect by Honeywell’s innovative home control technology is an investment to your home that’s well worth considering. Total Connect allows homeowners to remotely monitor and control their homes at any time, from anywhere in the world. Through a personalized web portal with mobile apps, the homeowner can stay connected to their home’s heating and air conditioning system and security system from their smartphone, tablet or personal computer. Homeowners can receive alerts via emails, view live video and control and access their security system, control lighting, lock/unlock doors remotely, and more. Plus the simplicity and comfort that Honeywell’s wireless Prestige IAQ HVAC system provides offers a full-suite of wireless-enabled accessories that help you meet homeowners comfort and security needs. Items such as universal diagnostics, water sensor alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and ventilation filtration alarms are just a few of the added benefits of owning such a home automation system. The system also provides customizable reminders for replacing the humidifier pad or UV lamp replacement reminders. When starting a home remodeling project, think about how your lifestyle has changed and what you would like different. Are you simply looking to expand your kitchen or add new windows, or maybe replace your home’s central heating and cooling system? When planning to remodel your home, don’t overlook the importance of improving your home’s environmental control system. It will improve the air you are breathing, increase your HVAC equipment’s energy efficiency, increase your home’s comfort and offer peace-of-mind by increasing your home’s safety and security.” He also notes, “Although most of today’s cutting-edge technology is wireless, there are going to be times when your remodeling contractor may need to add new equipment above ceilings or in the basement and run additional wiring that requires disrupting the existing walls and ceilings. When a contractor installs upgraded controls, the goal is usually for everything to be out of sight. By taking advantage of a home remodel project to upgrade your home’s technology infrastructure, adding new equipment at the same time is much easier.”

Exterior Features Whether it’s elements of your landscape or the exterior of the home itself that you’ve got your eye on improving, there are many different aspects of the property that could be the focus of a renovation project. With the addition or enhancement of outdoor living and entertaining areas continuing to be popular, there are so many options one could consider within just that area alone. Then there are the timeless items that will need replacement at some point, such as windows, doors, siding/gutters, roofing, walkways and driveway, garage, patio, etc. All told, there are many things to consider outside just as with the inside of the home, and some that will have a positive impact on both! UPGRADE YOUR
HOME
Window Replacement And Installation
“Upgrading your home’s windows is an excellent remodeling project that will not only improve the aesthetic appeal of your home but also your home’s energy efficiency. When you replace your windows, you are not just making a purchase, you are making an investment. It’s entirely possible to enjoy a beautiful new exterior look, and from the interior viewpoints as well, without breaking the bank. It’s not uncommon to see a 50% improvement in your home’s energy efficiency, or oftentimes more! Jason Olberding If you are searching for a project to compliment J-Tech Construction your new windows, I would recommend and J-Tech Solar Seamless Metal Alloy siding. Just like replacing your windows, brand new siding can cut back on your energy costs as well as provide a beautiful new look to your home. Our Seamless Metal Alloy siding comes in a variety of colors and is manufactured on-site, so it’s custom fit your home. It’s a great way to give your home a ‘face-lift.’
Speaking of energy costs, although solar energy is not necessarily a new concept, it has definitely seen a spike in popularity in recent years. Due to a competitive manufacturing market and advancements in technology, the price for a homeowner to have solar installed has decreased substantially. If you were previously interested in solar energy but wrote it off as too high of an expense, I definitely recommend getting a new estimate. You will more than likely be very pleasantly surprised at how much the investment price has decreased.” Olberding concludes with the following advice: “When you are ready to take on a new project, I suggest these three steps:
Increased Insulation Power
• Keep The Warm IN And The Cold OUT!
Enhanced Condensation Resistance • Prevent Mold, Mildew And Rotting.
Sound Control
• Reduce Unwanted Outside Noise.

1. Make a list of what is most important to you. Maybe you have a specific siding color in mind, or maybe you have a specific brand of shingles you want to use—whatever it might be, make sure your list is unique to your taste and vision. 2. Before you get your estimates, plan your budget. What can you afford right now? Maybe you have a budget that allows you to replace a few windows a year. This will keep you from feeling overwhelmed when getting your estimates. 3. After you get your estimates, make sure you do some homework on each of the companies that provided you with an estimate. Are they local? What is their rating with the Better Business Bureau? How about their rating on Google or Home Advisor? Getting answers to questions such as these can help you weed out any bad contractors. Remodeling doesn’t always happen by choice; it can also come about out of necessity. Either way, we’re happy to help.” Do-It-Yourself Projects There will be projects around the house that you’ll feel comfortable with tackling on your own, or are OK with taking your chances on learning by doing yourself. If you find that you need a piece of equipment or special tool to complete the job that you don’t have on-hand or access to borrow, check with Honeyman Rent-All and you might be able to avoid the expense of purchasing something you may not use again. They have an extensive inventory and a team of professionals who can educate you on how to use anything they have to offer, which is really nice!
The possibilities of what you can do to improve your home are exciting to think about, particularly when there’s so much out there to consider. They’re even more satisfying when completed and able to be fully enjoyed. While there are plenty of capable Do-It-Yourselfers out there, other instances call for a professional, whether it’s a necessity or you’d prefer to have someone else perform the task. For the latter, make sure you get on the books sooner than later, as the demand is particularly high this time of year. Otherwise, to keep things on track, a little guidance from the professionals never hurts, and they’re just a quick drop in or phone call away!
In the April issue we went into depth about navigating unplanned life changes, and now it’s time to delve into the life events that are specifically planned. Some are much the same, as they can occur unexpectedly or as a part of an established timeline of events, while others wouldn’t just happen unless they were intended – and generally the better thought out, the better on all accounts. Furthering your education and graduation, marriage, having a baby, getting a pet, retirement, moving, buying/selling a home or business – there are so many wonderful, even if sometimes bittersweet, things in life that are planned occasions. We’ve consulted with some of our clients on the life events for which they commonly help their clients plan. From the guidance they’ve provided, we’ve compiled helpful information and advice to share with our readers, with a focus on those who are nearing their golden years, and for those who aren’t quite so near but want to plan ahead well in advance! In planning for one’s golden years, retirement is center stage, as is estate planning and making end-of-life arrangements, life insurance, securing Medicare benefits or adequate health care coverage otherwise, downsizing and planning for changes in living arrangements, investment planning, and so on.
Andy Storz Good Life Retirement Solutions
Oftentimes planning ahead involves saving, investing, and having adequate insurance coverage to minimize major expenses that would set you back. “The most common lifechanging events we deal with are retirement and adding new family members either by birth or marriage,” says Andy Storz of Good Life Retirement Solutions. “Ultimately we help provide peace of mind. We want to make sure the people we work with don’t have to worry about losing money due to market uncertainty or not having the resources they need if something happens to them or a family member.
‘How much is enough?’ is a popular question for all types of scenarios, whether it be savings, coverage, benefits, etc. I don’t have a single answer because everyone’s situation is different and needs personalized attention. We like to discuss someone’s goals and balance that with ‘what if’ situations to make sure we can take care of as many needs as possible. When planned life changes are coming up it’s a great time to get more information and plan for the future. Something commonly overlooked is simply taking the time to plan now rather than waiting. It will take
more effort to reach savings goals the longer you wait and the older you get certain forms of insurance will get more expensive. It’s best to start preparing early so planned life changes can occur without any added stress. With these types of things, it’s always important to stay informed and sometimes that means getting a second opinion. We all want to make sure that any decision we make is good for our families and making sure we know our options is a great benefit to that process.” He also notes, “Recently, in our business, the Department of Labor’s new Fiduciary Rule is a big topic of conversation. It just took effect in June after a great deal of debate. Although the reaction to it by the financial industry has some downsides, I believe that overall it will be beneficial to the public by forcing more transparency and highlighting fees and charges by companies that may not have been easy to see in the past.” Given our audience of entrepreneurs and business professionals, one thing you all may find surprising is that many business owners don’t have plans in place for an exit strategy although they know at some point they will sell their business or pass it on to the next generation. “Having an exit plan is so important,” emphasizes Jethro Hopkins of No Coast Business Advisors. “It’s one of the basics of being a business owner. Whether you’re the sole proprietor or in a partnership, you’ve got to be proactive in planning for everything you’ll do moving forward, from start to finish. In the event of your untimely passing, will your significant other, child(ren) or another family member take over, and are they prepared to do so? In the event of a partner’s passing, are you comfortable entering a partnership by Jethro Hopkins default with their spouse, children, parents, or No Coast Business someone else who you may have never met, Advisors who may not even live here, or who might not be as invested, or knowledgeable at all for that matter, in the operation and success of your business? Everything that would happen in the event of the sale of the business, dissolution of partnership, death, etc. should be well documented, written into your operating agreement or articles of incorporation. From the day you open the business, an exit strategy should be in place and the plan should be clear to all parties involved. When you’re ready to retire is not the time to be scrambling to put this together either. You want to have everything in order at least 3-5 years prior to when you JULY 2017 Strictly Business 37
want to get out of the business. Plan your exit, your partner’s exit, and ideally both, as early on as possible – and specifically for partnerships, while you are on good terms. Just like a marriage, business partnerships go bad, and that fallout tends to be exactly what you’d imagine or have experienced a bad divorce to be like. In terms of planning for the future, just the same as not saving early for retirement or having your will and power of attorney in place, not having an exit strategy will burn you. You don’t want your business going into probate and having a judge determines what happens to it. You have the power when it’s in writing, as your wishes for your business take precedence over a judge’s orders. Similar to a will, someone has to challenge it and prove it’s not valid to prevail. Not to mention that having an exit strategy in place will allow you to get the most money out of your business when it comes time to sell, as you’ll have all of the documentation ready for the bank and potential buyers. It’s a simple way to plan for, and protect, your future and the future of your business.” Planning doesn’t always have to be far off in the future; it can also be for something important that you need to have in place to reach a short-term goal. Another topic of importance for business owners, as far as your role as an employer, is putting together the best possible team. This includes attracting top talent and retention of those professionals. At some point, you’ll be making decisions as to what offerings will be available to your employees who are planning for their futures, and that’s quite a responsibility. Having an attractive employee benefit package, or at minimum one that covers the bases, is essential in today’s competitive job market. If you’re looking to put one together or improve on what you have currently, or would just like a few questions answered, the experts at Benefit Professionals are just a phone call away. Back to the particulars of retirement planning, there are a few other significant items on the agenda. Living and care arrangements is definitely one of those, although it tends
to get put off until it becomes absolutely necessary. For seniors of all ages and walks of life, this is mainly for fear of a loss of independence among other concerns. However, there are so many wonderful places in our community to consider, and resources that you may not know even exist but are available to you whenever you’re ready to begin the planning process. “At CarePatrol we help families plan for taking their next step in life which includes looking at independent living or assisted living communities, and our services are 100% free to those we help,” says Theron Ahlman of CarePatrol of Nebraska. “When families or seniors feel they are getting close to needing more help or no longer want to take care of a house and everything that goes with it, we step in to visit with them and learn as much about them as we can. From there we help them find the best and safest Theron Ahlman communities as we always review the state’s CarePatrol of Nebraska care and violation history, schedule the tours and personally go with them on the tour to help ask the right questions. Most seniors aren’t sure what to ask or where to even start, so we can save them a lot of time when looking, which also can save them a lot of stress and make it an enjoyable experience. By planning ahead they get to choose where they want to go, as opposed to it being involuntary, such as when an event happens that forces the move or the decision must be made on their behalf due to the circumstances. We have found that those who have moved into a community wish they would have done it 5 years sooner on average. A lot of seniors still think a nursing home is what assisted living is, so I always stress taking the time to go visit and really understand what all is offered to them. The sooner we begin looking into the options, the more time for enjoying life and having less to worry about. At CarePatrol we always suggest that seniors start looking as soon as they begin to

MEN’S
There are plenty of recommendations to be made on how to achieve optimal health and wellness, or even just the small improvements you can make to your lifestyle with that goal in mind. In the scheme of things, nutrition is first and foremost in the discussion, because it is the foundation that supports the body functioning properly. Without good nutrition, one simply can’t sustain good health. Men still have a shorter life expectancy than women, and among the factors that influence that statistic is a higher rate of obesity than their female counterparts. In relationship to that,
they also undergo more obesity-related surgeries – knee and hip replacements, back surgery, open heart surgery, etc. – than women. Men are much less likely to watch what they eat or go on a diet, drink more alcohol on average, and when not working they tend to be more sedentary. These common behaviors are much to the detriment of their health when they become habit. However, it’s never too late to better yourself; with good nutrition and regular physical activity, improving your health at any age is possible. For every 10lbs you get closer to your healthy body weight, it drastically reduces your chances of experiencing a host of health complications that are directly linked to obesity. The good news for men is that you’ll lose weight twice as fast as those of the opposite sex almost across the board. The fact that men naturally have a larger percentage of body weight as muscle means their bodies will burn fat quicker. For those looking to looking to establish a meal plan, lose weight, build muscle, or just eat healthier, Just Good Meat provides high-quality meat that’s an excellent source of protein in a wellbalanced diet. With men in particular, as a positive “sign of the times” so to speak, many have become more proactive in doing what’s necessary to maintain good health. Men in our society, young and young at heart alike, have indeed come a long way from the stereotypical, but once prevailing mindset, of stubbornness and an overall come-what-may attitude towards health and wellness. With many taking notice of the strong connection between taking good care of themselves and living longer, fuller lives, it’s become evident that the modern man is much more willing and apt to do the things that will benefit him – even if not always the most enjoyable.

For meat, in particular, do your research as to where it’s sourced, even down to how the animals are raised and what they are fed, because it makes a big difference. This idea is not necessarily new, but it’s always worth mentioning because what we put into our bodies is so important to our overall health.”
Important to take note of, related to nutrition among other things, is that men really need to focus on their testosterone. Testosterone is what makes men, men. It’s a great indication of how their bodies are functioning. A major contributor to healthy testosterone is the quality of foods you are putting into your body. Other factors include regular exercise and stress management. Staying on track requires commitment and also being mindful of your health in all of the different scenarios you’ll encounter. While there’s often an intentional focus on what we’re doing in our personal lives, it’s important to keep health and wellness in mind while at work too. In general, men tend to overlook or underestimate the importance of regular health screenings and reducing the physical strain on their bodies too. The old mentality of ‘tough it out’ or ‘no pain, no gain’ can lead to health conditions that become very challenging and costly to reverse or repair. Many health conditions can be managed and minimized if we are aware of the early warning signs. Rather than put off seeking medical consultation, it is far better to have a problem or question addressed early for the least amount of negative impact to your health. Particularly when it comes to cancer screening, the earlier it is detected and the more you know, the better the outcome. Especially with prominent types of cancer affecting men, such as prostate cancer, you may not experience any warning signs until it is too late.
Daniel Cinotto FirstScan
“We are the first in the nation to develop and apply proprietary MRI technology specifically for the detection of prostate cancer,” says Daniel Cinotto of FirstScan. “It’s a progressive, non-invasive procedure that can tell us a lot of information – location, size, the rate of growth, etc. – whic h greatly helps the patient in determining what the next step should be. It’s now commonly used for detection, active surveillance and monitoring progress of treatment.
In this day and age, it’s important for men to know the options that are available to them. When armed with as much knowledge as possible, you’re able to have the important discussions and advocate for yourself and what’s best for you personally. Healthcare is an area

where breakthroughs are made all the time, with the propensity to positively affect so many lives. This is a perfect example; oftentimes once men are experiencing symptoms of prostate cancer it has already progressed very far. Statistically, 59% of men who have been diagnosed with clinically-significant prostate cancer showed no signs or symptoms beforehand, and that’s scary. In the other 41% who showed symptoms, it had already metastasized to other areas of the body and there was nothing that could be done at that point--also very scary. The prostate is located in the middle of your body, where you can’t see it or feel it like you would other types of cancers that appear as lumps or lesions. What we are trying to do is improve outcomes and drive down the statistics, which are currently that 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and for 1 out of 39 of those cases, it will be terminal. Until a cure is found, the best we can do is educate, and to find it early enough to be able to do something about it. The procedure takes about 30 minutes, and there’s nothing uncomfortable or invasive that happens during that time. It really helps to alleviate the fear associated with screening that’s recommended based on age and family history. If a man who has an elevated PSA decides to come to us first, and we determine that it’s related to something else, the biopsy can be avoided. If it does need to be performed, we can provide detailed information that gives an excellent frame of reference regarding the area to target. FirstScan has one of the only fellowship-trained prostate radiologists in the Midwest on our team, who has studied with the foremost thought leaders on prostate MRI. As such, we are lucky to have access to such a fantastic network of contacts that we can consult for additional information or a second opinion on findings. I urge men no to wait or put this on the backburner and avoid it. Guys tend to be stubborn about going to the doctor, especially in the age group when they need to be going regularly. It’s critical to follow the recommended intervals for health screenings. Also, so often these types of things go undiscussed, so I strongly advise getting educated, participating in shared decision making, asking questions, and talking about it with a trusted healthcare professional and with your loved ones. We’re happy to answer any questions and tell you about what we have to offer. Bring your printouts, your screenshots and online research, your questions and concerns; we welcome any of that. Open dialogue will be a critical part of your continued health and wellness.”
With more knowledge, awareness, resources, and support out there than ever before, there’s no excuse not to pursue anything that will help you maintain good health or improve your quality of life. Guys, we encourage you to stay on trend with becoming more proactive about your health and wellness, and there are plenty of qualified experts out there to consult if you have any questions or concerns. Stay healthy friends! JULY 2017 Strictly Business 41
What Strictly Business Magazine is all about, and has been since the publication was founded, is promoting local businesses and organizations. In doing so, we strongly encourage our readers to be conscious consumers, as we feel that it is incredibly important to support local businesses that support the local community. Likewise, we hope to inspire our fellow businesses to make giving back a priority, and shine a light on those that feel the same. It’s heartwarming to report there are many of these, both small and large, that contribute so much to making our city such a wonderful place to live and do business. Here in the Omaha Metro we are truly fortunate to have an amazing network of non-profit organizations doing such important work that touches the lives of others profoundly. There is great diversity within the non-profit community, which allows for all different types of needs to be met. This also affords citizens and companies the freedom to give back in whatever way they find to be most fulfilling and makes the best use of their time, talents, and/or income. Non-profits rely solely on donors and contributions to fund the work they do for the community. As such, every little bit counts towards both a better today and a brighter future. It is a great feeling to do your part and contribute to a cause that truly helps others, and to mobilize and encourage others around you in the workplace to do so as well. In leading by example, you are showing your team that you care and that they should too. With the opportunity to serve in any number of different capacities, it’s all about finding the perfect blend of bettering yourself and bettering the lives of others. Let’s say you choose to be on board or committee for a non-profit or fundraiser, benefit, etc. It’s a great opportunity to collaborate with those outside of your own business/industry, or those who are connected in some way, depending on the composition of the group and the objective(s) you’re setting out to accomplish together. Either way, you’ll make the acquaintance of other like-minded professionals, which in turn grows your network while doing good for the benefit of others in your community. Whether you’re an employer and employee, serving in this capacity allows you to showcase your individual talents and the level of dedication you put forth speaks volumes, widely recognized by those you’re working with on the project and also those who witness the success of your collective efforts. Giving back to the community should be an enjoyable and exciting opportunity to be a part of something that benefits everyone involved. Choosing a cause that is particularly meaningful on a personal level will likely provide you with a greater sense of purpose, as well as greater worth of and pride in your investment. It is not feasible to contribute to every charity, and you will likely be pulled in many directions when it comes to choosing which ones you want to support. Be careful—all non-profits are not created equal! Do your research before you finalize your decision on which organizations you will promote and invest your time and resources in, with a focus on how they spend their money and utilize their resources. While awareness is incredibly important, actions often do speak louder than words. The work that each non-profit does, and in turn your contribution to their cause, should impact the community in a real and meaningful way. We have compiled a list of non-profits right here in our community, some of which may be familiar and others that may be new to you – but all of which need and welcome your support. If you’re reading this, we encourage you to get involved with the ones that speak to you, whether it’s a team or solo mission. Greater Omaha and the surrounding communities are a better place together because of the value we place on giving back here, but it takes consistent effort from each and every one of us to make the difference we want to see here at the community level and in the world. 42 Strictly Business JULY 2017

The Metro Area Youth Foundation (MAYF) was formed in 2006 by a group of Omaha area Optimist Club members who wanted to do more for families and children experiencing cancer. This all-volunteer group recognized that many organizations have been formed to help fight cancer, but there were not many resources available to the families who were in the middle of the fight. The goal is to allow the families to focus on the children not the money they owe by providing a short-term financial bridge. Many of these families were already struggling financially; a cancer diagnosis can often mean that only one parent can continue to work, adding to the burden. MAYF has been able to provide over 500 families a chance to keep the water and power on, rent to stay in their apartment, a mortgage payment to keep their home and a chance to keep life as stable and normal as possible. For more information about how you can get involved or donate to MAYF’s Childhood Cancer Campaign, visit SummerBashforCCC.org or please call (402) 740-5158 or email SummerBash@cox.net.

Since 2001, the agency has provided a welcoming, safe place for grieving children, teens, and adults to offer each other hope and support. BBB accreditation does not mean that the business’s products or services have been evaluated or endorsed by BBB, or that BBB has made a determination as to the business’s product quality or competency in performing services. It means BBB has concluded that the business meets BBB Standards for Trust and has pledged to support the objectives and standards of fair advertising and ethical business practices. Not all businesses qualify for BBB accreditation, so make sure to look for BBB’s seal that identifies the business as one that “Starts With Trust®.” BBB’s headquarters is located in Omaha at 11811 P St. and it has a branch office at 300 N 44th St. #100 in Lincoln. The Nonprofit Association of the Midlands (NAM) was formed with one goal in mind: to help nonprofit organizations help their communities. NAM was incorporated in 2002, and CEO Anne Hindery has led the organization since 2008. “We serve and strengthen nonprofits of all sizes and missions in Nebraska and western Iowa. Founded in 1993, we are a nationally-recognized 501c3 nonprofit working with the National Cancer Institute and pharmaceutical companies to provide breakthrough treatments to cancer patients using clinical trials which we bring to the local community settings here in Nebraska. Every day we get closer to the cure. • Why Cancer Clinical Trials are Important • They lead to the discovery of new cancer treatments and cures • They can improve the health of participating cancer patients • They benefit future generations, impacting thousands of lives • When our research is shared – across the state and around the globe – we get closer to the cure even faster We succeed in our work due to the collaborative support of our experienced physicians, hospitals, clinics, donors, and patients in communities across the state of Nebraska. And we share in the collective belief that there is always something more we can do. Visit our site at www.cancerallianceofnebraska.org

It started with one home. The Reverend Charles and Alberta Danner lovingly opened their doors and hearts to a homeless child in need. As the number of vulnerable kids in their home grew, so did their needs. But the Lincoln community was there to wrap the couple with support, helping to purchase property and construct the CEDARS Home for Children. Seventy years later, providing refuge for children and youth who have no other safe place to spend the night is the heart of CEDARS mission, pursued through comprehensive efforts to help kids in crisis and build strong families. On CEDARS 70th anniversary, candid photos and heartwarming stories of children finding safety, stability and enduring family have been collected into a new historical book. Children’s Scholarship Fund of Omaha (CSF) believes that all families, regardless of income, should be able to choose the best educational setting for their children. CSF provides tuition assistance scholarships so children from low-income families can access the private or parochial K-8 education of their choice. CSF is destination neutral and children attend approximately 80 different schools across Omaha and northeast Nebraska. A crucial piece of the CSF program is the commitment it requires from families. Each CSF family must contribute $500 toward their children’s education and their children must achieve a 90% attendance rate. Since 1999, more than 32,500 scholarships have been awarded and valued at nearly $33 million dollars. CSF Omaha relies solely upon donations to provide scholarships. If you or your company would like to make a donation or receive more information, please contact the CSF office.
