Great Brands That Compete On Value: Understand Knowledge is Power(ful) For the past couple of months, among the features in the magazine that we’ve covered there’s been a prevailing theme. For those who haven’t been following, and to recap for those who have, I’ve emphasized the significance of personal branding for business professionals. As such, we tie this into much of what we do at Strictly Business. It’s not just your mere presence, but the qualities you are best known for that will be compelling factors when it comes time to select the recipient of one’s business. Why choose you? What have you done to influence that decision? As previously discussed, the more well-acquainted someone is with you personally, the more comfortable he/she will be with approaching you and trusting you. Building a good rapport and gaining trust takes time and consistency. Bearing this in mind, an effective way to establish credibility is sharing your knowledge - with no strings attached. Consider it an investment in developing a relationship based on mutual trust in hopes that it will yield a return later on down the line. And chances are, it will. Given the dynamics of today’s business/consumer relationship, it’s important to understand that process has to start with a business putting forth the effort to attract the consumer by differentiating itself from the competition in the marketplace. As the saying goes, give and you shall receive. By providing something of value sans immediate compensation, it’s a gesture of good faith, and a very telling sign about how a relationship would be moving forward. Make no mistake, people will take notice and it’s greatly appreciated, so the perceived value is there and it’s impactful. By making this type of impression consistently, then through the power of word of mouth, it will eventually become your reputation. Once you’re seen as an authority in your area of expertise, there’s much less convincing that needs to be done on your part to draw in clients. Sharing knowledge isn’t just limited to public perception in terms of benefits. It also helps you educate your audience about the many ways what you have to offer could potentially apply to them. Assuming this is obvious is a common mistake. By presenting ideas to consider, you’re actively engaging your audience to do the same; it’s a non-invasive call to action. You don’t always have to completely break it down,

For others who don’t, if they ever find themselves in a position where they would need assistance from that type of professional, there’s comfort in knowing exactly who to contact when the time comes. The more approachable and helpful you are to others, even when it doesn’t appear to directly benefit you, the more likely people will be to gravitate to you when they need something. With 4-5 different topics each month, we cover a lot of ground over the course of a year. This provides the opportunity to weigh in on topics directly related to a business, as well as to identify areas where you can get a little creative with your approach in applying your expertise. With a prominent representative of a business pictured alongside his/ her quote in the story, and in proximity to a display ad, these elements all tie in together nicely for maximum impact. If you want to be seen as an expert, positioning yourself as one is just as important as actually being one. Remember, your knowledge isn’t just something you apply to conducting business, it’s also something you can leverage to drive business. Cox Communications Supports Omaha 2-1-1 Helpline With 3-Year Grant U n i t e d Way o f the Midlands (UWM) is proud to announce it will receive a gift of $60,000 from Cox Communications over the next three years to support operations at the 2-1-1 helpline. The helpline at United Way makes important connections for people in need. The staff makes referrals to public and nonprofit services that can address their urgent situation, and help them move toward financial stability in the future. This one-stop-shop for human service help provides the free service to residents of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area, including nine counties in Southwest Iowa – and serves callers from across the state of Nebraska. The center answered more than 54,000 calls in 2016. The most frequently-reported needs from year-to-year are for housing and utility assistance. MLCDC Certified by U.S. Treasury as Community Development Financial Institution Recently, The Peter Kiewit Foundation awarded the Midlands Latino Comm unity Development Corporation (MLCDC) $70,000 in grants to assist its business programs and technology. MLCDC’s MicroLending and Business Assistance Programs will receive $60,000 and $10,000 will go to technology renovations and improvements including new computers and software. The grants go beyond monetary value, supporting programs for Latino business owners which are “critical to building personal assets, increasing incomes, and providing jobs in the community,” said Marta Sonia Londoño, MLCDC executive director. In conjunction with the grants, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Community Development Financial Institutions Fund (CDFI Fund) gave formal certification to MLCDC, recognizing it as a Community Development Financial Institution. This certification states that MLCDC meets the requirements in the following areas: *Has a primary mission of promoting community development; *Serves and maintains accountability to eligible target markets; and *Functions as a financing entity to provide development services. “With the nationally recognized certification and The Peter Kiewit Foundation’s support, MLCDC will continue to provide the programs and services needed to created greater sustainability and financial security for those we serve,” Londoño said. MLCDC provides Latinos with opportunities to generate economic growth and develop a sustainable future in the Midlands. UNO Athletes to Give and Find Inspiration at Mighty Mavericks Event UNO’s Sapp Fieldhouse is the place to be on Saturday, September 9th from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. It’s the site where the 6th Annual Mighty Maveric ks Family Focus Event will take place. The free event is a partnership between University of Nebraska Omaha Athletics, United Cerebral Palsy of Nebraska, Children’s Respite Care Center and Ollie Webb Center. It’s designed to introduce youth and adults with differing abilities to Maverick players -- giving them a chance to show their skills of their favorite sports and play right alongside college athletes. “This is a social and fun opportunity to experience many sporting activities. There is something for everyone. It is a great way to connect and make some friends, and that’s what this is really all about,” said Sarah Tselentis, Director of Marketing and Communications at Children’s Respite Care Center. Fans of all ages will be able to make their way along the indoor Fieldhouse Court where UNO athletes representing many different sports will come together with fans and participate in activities. Just a few of the offerings to choose from are: testing your hockey skills, work on dribbling and passing the basketball, show off your best tennis serve, snap a photo with Durango the Mavericks’ mascot, and top it off with brunch with The Pancake Man! “We are very grateful to the student-athletes, coaches and staff of UNO Athletics who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the kids and their families of our community. Governor Pete Ricketts and the Nebraska Department of Labor announced Nebraska’s unemployment rate reached 2.8 percent in July, the lowest rate since August of 2000. “This major jobs milestone is another great example of how Nebraska is growing,” said Governor Ricketts. “This year, we’ve already seen over $1 billion of new investment from great job creators like Costco, Facebook, Cargill, and others. My team continues to develop new strategies to grow new opportunities to keep Nebraska the best place in the world to live, work, and raise a family.” Nebraska is tied for fourth best unemployment rate in the nation with New Hampshire. “Several industry sectors have seen positive growth trends over the past few years. Financial activities, professional and business services, leisure & hospitality, and other services all reached new employment highs in July,” said Commissioner of Labor John H. Pumpkin Run Set for Oct. 7 at Pioneers Park in Lincoln

Canfield’s Reveals New Sales Floor, Bike Shop and More

The 16th annual Pumpkin Run, a one-mile fun run for youth runners, is set for Saturday, Oct. 7 at Pioneers Park in Lincoln. More than 50 schools are expected to be represented in what is believed to be the largest youthonly cross-country run in the nation. Heats will be held every 20 minutes from 8:30 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. and are divided by grade and school size. Each runner receives a shirt, commemorative cup, Gatorade and granola bar along with certificates for free meals and two free games of bowling. Last year, more than 3,400 kids participated, and 25 area schools earned awards for having at least 10% of their students participate. The Pumpkin Run is conducted by the Nebraska Sports Council, with assistance from Lincoln Public Schools, Lincoln Parks and Recreation and the Lincoln Track Club. Canfield’s Sporting Goods has reformatted their sales floor to create a more intimate shopping experience. In the transition, the local sporting goods epicenter is adding bicycles—an item NEVER sold there before—and implemented a pro-active pricing policy. Through feedback, Canfield’s learned that customers desired an easier, more intimate shopping experience. Prior to the reformat, the sales floor was 42,000 square feet, which caused customers to walk long distances between items and sales associates. Now, the store is 22,000 square feet and makes it easier for a customer to shop in any given category while also working with the same employee. In addition to physical changes, Canfield’s is adding bikes to the sales floor as of mid-September. Over the last 5-10 years, Canfield’s has seen business migrate to outdoor activities like camping and running, so they’ve now moved away from tactical and surplus items, adding the bike shop. Canfield’s is also utilizing a garage on-site as a space for convenient bike maintenance and custom car-rack installation for installing Thule and Yakima products. Finally, in addition to the physical changes, the store has rolled out an easy price-matching system called Proactive Price-matching, wherein associates search for a lower cost on the customer’s behalf via handheld tablets. Definitive Vision Unveils Eye-Catching Mural at Grand Opening Event

Soy Buyers Convene in Omaha

Definitive Vision, Midtown Crossing’s full-service eye care center, invited the community to come and see its new, bigger space and what could be a world-record breaking, original work of art.

Nearly 60 percent of the soybeans currently growing in America’s soybean belt are exported. Soy exports generated more than $24 billion of revenue for the United States last year, and this number is growing alongside global populations and economies.

The eye-catching mural, which was unveiled at a grand opening party August 1, is a large-scale version of a colorful – and functional – Ishihara Color Test plate. Ishihara Color Tests are used to determine if someone is color blind. Definite Vision tapped Omaha artist/illustrator Joe Nicholson to complete the mural. Depicting an Ishihara-style peace sign, it measures about 10.5 feet in diameter.

Last month, many of the farmers who grow U.S. Soy had the opportunity to meet the international buyers who purchase it. The U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC) hosted its 5th annual U.S. Soy Global Trade Exchange Aug. 15-17 at Omaha’s CenturyLink Center, and attendees represented a significant amount of U.S. Soy purchased.

The mural is the design centerpiece of Definitive Vision’s new office at 3157 Farnam Street, Suite 7105. Twice the size of the original location, it will allow Dr. Shannon Elwood and his team to build on a reputation for premier service with extra space for eyewear repairs/ adjustments and additional staff, including another eye doctor, new exam equipment and additional frame lines.

More than 250 international buyers from 50 countries attended the 2017 U.S. Soy Global Trade Exchange, in addition to 350 U.S. soybean farmers, exporters, traders and other industry representatives. They attended trade team buyer/supplier meetings, enjoyed a networking reception at the Joslyn Art Museum and participated in key discourse on recent global and commercial issues affecting international soy and grain markets.

The grand opening event featured free food from CRAVE, drinks (two local brews, bourbon and wine) from PROOF and hundreds of dollars in giveaways, including $50 gift cards and concert tickets. The entire Definitive Vision team (plus some friends and family) contributed to the aesthetic of the new office. Smart Start Learning Center Changes Hands On July 19th, first-time business owner, Margertha McLean, purchased Omaha’s most innovate childcare facility – Smart Start Learning Center from Jayne Buck, owner since 2012. Located just north of the 72nd and Blondo streets intersection, Smart Start focuses on enriching early childhood education with art, science, nutrition and fitness activities. A former engineer with degrees in Cellular Biology, Biochemistry and Nutritional Sciences, McLean is looking forward to implementing more STEM-focused programs to help give Omaha’s kids a head start in math and science. This was very important to me when starting this company, having seen firsthand the devastating results that market volatility can cause to people’s savings. I didn’t ever want to be in a position where I had to tell someone that he/she had lost the money that was invested. This philosophy also means that we aren’t for everyone; however, for those who value security, we do great things. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT DOING BUSINESS IN LINCOLN AND OMAHA? There’s a real sense of community doing business here. It’s amazing how often you meet people and it turns out you’re connected in some way. Being able to work with people who value building relationships is something that is very unique and special. I’ve been in Nebraska almost my entire life, so it made sense to start a business and a family here. I spent some time away from the area several years ago and found that I missed it, so this is home. WHAT KIND OF COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS/GROUPS ARE YOU INVOLVED WITH? We’ve done a lot of great work with schools by setting up scholarships, providing food to families for the holidays, and providing clothing for children in need. I have personally been involved with the Knights of Columbus for a few years and give what time I can helping with their activities as well. With my children being pretty young, I don’t have as much time to give as I’d like. But my oldest two are close to an age where they can come along so I’m planning to get involved in some sort of community activity in the near future. DO YOU HAVE A BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY OR MISSION STATEMENT? Our goal is to provide individualized solutions based on a person or family’s goals and resources. These solutions need to bring safety, security, and peace of mind. WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE OR INTERESTING THING ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS THAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW? When people find out we don’t have any offerings that would cause a loss of premium due to market volatility it tends to be surprising. It seems to help a lot of our customers feel more at ease knowing that we would never recommend something to them that may lose them money. WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN IN THE INDUSTRY AND YOUR COMPANY IN THE PAST FEW YEARS? The biggest one that has happened in the last few years has been the implementation of the Department of Labor’s Fiduciary Rule. While it promotes transparency, it also caused a number of investment companies to no longer work

with clients that they considered to not have enough assets. We’re still seeing the impact on the finance and insurance industries unfold. My hope is that ultimately consumers will be made more aware of how much of their money is being used for various fees and it will be easier for them to determine their options. WHAT DO YOU SEE HAPPENING WITH THE BUSINESS IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS? Technology, Baby Boomer retirement, and government reform will be big drivers of the next five years. The increased use of robo-advisors will likely put a strain on traditional broker relationships and may force some consolidation. As Boomers continue to retire their savings will be tested, and a large market downturn like the one in 2008 could put many in a terrible position. Lastly, government reform (or lack thereof) may drastically change pensions and social security. We’re closely watching what’s going on with many pension plans right now to see if that will be impacting people counting on them in the future. WHAT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES THAT YOUR COMPANY HAS FACED? The ongoing one is the bad reputation that a few have given the finance and insurance industries. Sometimes it’s tough to overcome the preconceived notion that someone in our field is only out to sell and will say whatever they need to make that sale. That simply isn’t the case. There are many great professionals who value building relationships with their clients and will keep their client’s best interests in mind. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST IMPORTANT ACHIEVEMENT AS A BUSINESS? For me, it was when I was given a Nebraska Admiralship in recognition of the scholarships that we created. Knowing that there was an appreciation for what we were doing for the community meant a great deal to me. Something like that will always be more meaningful than any kind of sales or business accomplishment to me personally, because the education we helped someone obtain will last their lifetime. WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST TURNING POINT IN YOUR BUSINESS? Learning the impact that it was possible to make in the community by finding the right opportunities with which to offer help and get involved. I had come from a professional background where giving back was very impersonal and usually meant giving a check to a large organization. By working with people one on one, especially in the schools, we really found that we can make a huge difference in people’s lives by finding small needs that have a large impact. I think having those experiences really shifted the philosophy of the company to make giving back as important as gaining customers. WHAT IS ONE GOAL FOR YOUR BUSINESS THAT YOU HAVE YET TO ACCOMPLISH? I hope to get to a place where we are putting a third of our revenue back into the community through givebacks and charitable sponsorships. This is the most rewarding part of the business for me so I’d love to see it grow more. Our goal for this year was 20% and we’ve been able to meet it so far, I think we can do better though.

OMAHA HOME FOR BOYS The Omaha Home for Boys has been serving at-risk youth in the region for nearly a century. Through its residential care, transitional living and independent living programs, the Home empowers vulnerable young men and women with the skills needed to lead independent, productive lives. Jeff DeWispelare is the Chief Operating Officer at Omaha Home for Boys. How did you get started in the business? - More than 25 years ago I began my nonprofit career by volunteering at a teen lock-in at a local YMCA in Dallas, Texas while doing my college internship (not in the nonprofit sector). I was offered a job that night and the rest is, as they say, history. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - Helping staff realize they cannot take failure personally. In the at-risk youth service business there are great success stories along the way, but the path is also filled with youth that don’t quite make it work in their life, which is a very difficult thing to accept and not take personally. What has been your most important achievement professionally? - An important one has been staying persistent in the nonprofit sector when it would have been easy to chase the money and not stay true to my passion to help people. Over the years I have been rewarded for my loyalty by being promoted. I am very proud that I stuck to my plan, and as a result, I have enjoyed a rewarding career. Tell us a little about your family. - I have been blessed with my wonderful wife Macy. Together we have five wonderful kids ages 16, 17, 19, 21, and 23. What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - I experienced cancer twice in my early 30’s. Those experiences changed the way I view life and have made me a better husband, friend, and family member. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I enjoy golfing and boating. It’s not what you do but more about spending time with friends and family making memories. What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I’m a closet reality TV junkie…I guess not so much in the closet anymore! What are you the most proud of? - The thousands of amazing and dedicated staff that I have had the privilege to work with, lead, and learn from over the past 25 years in the nonprofit sector. What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - Your integrity is who you are when nobody’s watching. If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - I have always wanted to be a sports psychologist for a college football team, of course the Huskers! What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - I’m most passionate about the impactful work we do at Omaha Home for Boys. CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY, NEBRASKA Concordia University, Nebraska, founded in 1894, is a fully accredited, coeducational university located in Seward that offers more than 70 undergraduate, graduate and professional programs at its main campus, graduate college in Lincoln, and online. Joel Christiansen, who owns and operates the Christiansen Academy, is the instructor for one of Concordia’s newest courses, the MBA Organizational Development Clinic. Tell us a little about the MBA Organizational Development Clinic at Concordia University, Nebraska. - This is an 8-week course where Concordia University MBA students are matched up with local nonprofits and businesses to assist with the development of a marketing plan, planning of a promotional event, or development of a training program. Each student spends 100 documented hours working for the client under their guidance as well as the guidance of the MBA instructor assigned to that course. How did you get started in the business? - During my service as a community liaison for the University of Nebraska Athletic Department Life Skills Program in the early 90s, I was asked to do some speaking and consulting work. It was a natural fit. That progressed into starting my own business, Christiansen Academy, and then becoming a professor at the college level. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - Meeting the standard of excellence every time I am called to write, teach, or speak. What has been your most important achievement professionally? - There are two. Carson Forst is a Risk Management Consultant at Bearence Management Group. How did you get started in the business? - I was in college when I was first introduced to the world of insurance. Knowing I’ve always wanted to find a career that allowed me to express my competitive and entrepreneurial side, I haven’t looked back since. While I started with an internship in personal insurance, I’ve found my way to the commercial insurance side. I’m happy to say I love what I do and will be here for the long haul! Tell us a little about your family. - While starting a family of my own is in the future plans, currently it’s just me and my four-legged buddy, Rizzo! What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - On a day off you can find me doing anything that allows me to be active and outdoors… biking, golfing, running, at a lake/beach, etc. What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - As an infant, I was diagnosed with Supraventricular Tachycardia, a condition that causes an abnormally fast heart beat. Some ‘SVT’ patients’ conditions remain their whole life but I was one of the lucky ones who outgrew it very early in life. What are you the most proud of? - The completion of my first sprint triathlon this summer. It’s something I’ve never done before and randomly had an urge to register for a few months ago. The training has been fun and future races will be a part of my life from now on! What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - I always remember my dad telling me, ‘Actions speak louder than words.’ It’s a great piece of advice that has stuck with me through the years. If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Whole-hearted (yes, I know that’s technically two). If you had a theme song, what would it be? - People are Crazy by Billy Currington. Which talent would you most like to have? - I would love to be able to speak a few different languages. How did you get started in the business? - I graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Marketing-Fashion Merchandising degree. Shortly after graduation, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue professional opportunities within the growing fashion capital of the United States. I began my career at Hautelook | Nordstromrack.com, where I worked for over five years as a Senior Logistics Coordinator. However, I always knew I wanted to move back to my Midwestern roots. There was an opportunity to join the Strictly Business team which I couldn’t pass up. I’m coming up on my 2-year anniversary with the company! Tell us a little about your role with the company. - I work on both the sales and production side of the publication, with a wide variety of responsibilities including client correspondence, account management, event planning and networking, so every day is vastly different for me. Tell us a little about your family. - My husband Eric and I just got married at the end of July! We are in full newlywed bliss. To see how he’s transformed my world in the past 4 years, I can only imagine what he will do with a lifetime. My family is my world! I’m the oldest of 3 girls. My mother, Gay, is a ray of sunshine and the strongest woman I know. My sisters Stacie and Paige also reside in Lincoln and as their ‘big sis’ I’m proud of who they’ve become and flattered to call them my sisters and best friends. Lastly, I can’t forget about our 2-year-old golden retriever Lucy! What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Losing my father to cancer in December. He will always be my superhero and his courage and bravery is an inspiration to us all. Although I continue to learn how to live in a world without him in it, I find peace knowing he will always be looking over me. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I love to travel any opportunity I get! I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list. I enjoy spending time with friends and family, attending concerts, dinners, going to any sporting event, and Husker Football to name a few! What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - ‘Do one thing each day that makes you happy.’ It’s something my mother always reminds me. If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Positive. If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - Wedding Coordinator or Event Planner. If you could have a super power, what would it be? - Time travel. I would have loved to live in so many different time periods! First stop in my time machine would be The Roaring Twenties. Sarah Thompson is an MRI Technologist at FirstScan. Tell us a little about your business. - FirstScan opened in November of 2015. We can perform MRI’s of any part of the body but we specialize in MRI of the prostate as a diagnostic tool in early detection of prostate cancer. This month is very exciting for us as September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. We strive to bring awareness to the community of the prevalence of prostate cancer and the need for men who are at risk to get screened by their doctors. Most men do not realize that in 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Prostate cancer is very treatable if it is detected early. How did you get started in the business? - I was recruited by FirstScan before the company opened. I was working full-time at a local hospital when the owners found me on LinkedIn. Initially I was hired to work part-time at a sister company. The owners later approached me about working a full-time position at FirstScan during the planning stages. At first I unsure about taking the position, but after hearing the vision for the company, I was excited to become a part of the team. We are pioneers in our industry as the first imaging center in Omaha to offer affordable, specialized prostate imaging. Tell us a little about your family. - I have two teenage daughters who are ages 18 and 14. We moved to the Omaha area from Lincoln over 10 years ago and we love it here. My oldest daughter has special needs and we have been blessed by the various sports, clubs and activities that Omaha has to offer her. She enjoys swimming, soccer, basketball and cooking classes. My youngest is a freshman in high school and keeps busy taking advanced classes and clubs at her school. We are also active members of Lifegate church, many of the friends we have made there have become like family to us. We love serving and being a part of the community outreach. What are you the most proud of? - I am most proud of my daughters. Raising kids as a single parent is challenging and I have always worried about how my girls would turn out. They are teenagers now and though they have good days and bad days, they never cease to amaze me with their kindness and their desire to give their best. Not only am I proud of what they have accomplished but who they have become as young women. What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - Lead by example. I try to follow this as a mother, a friend and an employee. People will not listen to what you have to say if you do not believe it or live by it yourself. If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Passionate. If you could have a super power, what would it be? - Invisibility. Paul brings over 30 years of experience as a designer, project manager and consultant to the Cresa Omaha office. His diverse background includes work in the areas of commercial and residential development, municipal utility infrastructure, office remodel and build-out, electronic security systems, and critical infrastr ucture continuity of operations planning. Prior to joining Cresa, Paul worked for civil firms HWS Engineering and Ross Engineering in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he specialized in assisting private and municipal clients with the design and construction of numerous commercial and residential developments. He also worked as a facility project manager for the Nebraska Army National Guard and USSTRATCOM, providing guidance on the design and construction of new facilities and the remodeling and renovation of existing buildings, with project scopes ranging from $10,000 to $25 million. Most recently, Paul assisted the Department of Homeland Security in providing all-hazards vulnerability assessments at critical infrastructure sites around the country. “So, Is It Over . . .?”

“Show me a salesperson,” stated Bob the sales manager, “that tells a prospect he isn’t going to buy and I’ll show you a salesperson who starves.” With that, Bob leaned back in his chair and waited for any of the other salespeople to contradict him. No one did, at least not out loud. Nick could not help but think of the last customer who bought from him. Looking back on what had transpired, Nick wondered if he were just lucky. Oh my gosh, he thought, I did tell that customer he wasn’t going to buy. But he did anyway. I wonder how I got out of that one. Nick replayed the scene in his mind. . . “That’s very interesting Nick,” stated the prospect, turning around to look at Nick, “but your price is too high.” “Oh,” said Nick wanting to kick himself for saying something so stupid. And then when he heard himself speaking again, he really wanted to kick himself. “I suppose that it’s over.” “What do you mean by that?” quizzed the prospect. “Simple. My price is too high, and it is over.” Nick held out his hand to shake the prospect’s hand to thank him for his time when . . . “Time out, Nick. Your price is high, but your product is better than what I’ve seen.” “I appreciate that,” responded Nick, “but you aren’t going to buy it, and I want to thank you for coming by.” Nick again put his hand out. “Actually, I think I will buy it. But I have to tell you Nick, telling people that they aren’t going to buy is no way to make sales.” “Thanks for the advice,” responded Nick, “I’ll remember that.” Nick presented the signature page to the prospect and the prospect signed and then shook Nick’s hand. I better not tell Bob about this, thought Nick. Even the customer told me it was no way to make sales. The RESULT: When used at the right time, telling a prospect that “it’s over” can make sales since you are forcing the prospect to make a decision. The only direction a salesperson can move in a sales call that does not create pressure is toward the “No.” Remember when you were little and your mother told you that you couldn’t have something you really wanted. How did you feel when she said that? The truth — you wanted it even more. Don’t picture your prospects as little children with you playing mom. But consider for a moment how even today when there is something you want badly, and someone tells you “No way,” how you immediately feel. You want it even more and you’ll try and figure out a way to get it. And, if while you’re trying to figure out a way, someone is there and says, “Would you like me to help you figure a way to get it?” Chances are you’ll accept the salesperson’s offer. This is not a tactic you’d probably use in the first moments of talking with a prospect. Usually, this tactic is used when the prospect states an objection to the sale going forward. Two conditions must be met before you use this tactic lest it backfire on you. First, the prospect must have told you how your product will solve his concerns. Second, the prospect has told you he has a big enough budget to buy your product. Make sure these conditions have been met before you go forward. When you go forward, act the part. Nick really did think it was over.

And then when the prospect tells you that it’s not really over, offer your help by stating words to the effect, “Oh, I guess I got the wrong impression. What would you like me to do now?” Then wait, forever if necessary, for a response. Most people really want what they have been told they can’t have — especially qualified prospects. 19th Annual Grief’s Journey Remembrance Walk Draws Record Crowd

The Hope Center for Kids, along with honorary chairs Mike and Robbie Frank and event chairs Jeff and Mary Wilson, are hosting “Rooted in Hope,” the 10th annual gala benefiting “The Hope” at CenturyLink Center Omaha on Friday, October 20.

On Saturday, August 12, over 300 people gathered at Miller’s Landing to celebrate the lives of loved ones no longer here at the 19th Annual Grief’s Journey Remembrance Walk. The weather was beautiful, the walk over the Bob Kerry Pedestrian Bridge was invigorating, the live music was highly entertaining and everyone enjoyed the snacks, activities and comradery. The Remembrance Walk is an annual event that supports our community’s grievers, provides community awareness of the available free services, and is also a fundraiser the helps Grief’s Journey continue the work of providing free grief support. Angels Among Us Receives PayPal Gives Grant for Equipment Angels Among Us, an organization committed to financially assisting families battling pediatric cancer, announced that it has been awarded a $8,000 grant from the PayPal Gives Corporate Advised Fund at Silicon Valley Community Foundation. The grant was recommended by PayPal’s employee-volunteer led Omaha location GIVE Team. Angels Among Us has experienced growth in both the number of families needing assistance and in staff in recent months. The current equipment was not keeping up with the demands of the organization. The funds will be used to purchase new computers and equipment, including a much-needed server for storage of important records and family application materials. The project is made possible through PayPal’s GIVE Team program, which empowers employees globally to support the communities in which they live and work through volunteerism and employeesponsored grants. With more than 30 GIVE Teams worldwide, employees recommend approximately $800,000 in grants each year, which are then distributed to benefitting organizations through the PayPal Gives Corporate Advised Fund. Angels Among Us (myangelsamongus.org) was established in 2006 to financially assist families who are struggling due to a pediatric cancer diagnosis. In the last eleven years, Angels Among Us has assisted over 300 families with $1.5 million in support. Dancing Raises $90K for Youth Youth Emergency Ser vices’ (YES; w w w. ye s o m a h a . org) annual Dance for a Chance fundraiser presented by C&A Industries took place on August 4th at the Omaha Design Center and raised more than $90,000 for homeless youth. The evening opened with a performance that included volunteers and staff who symbolically passed a candle to the youth currently in YES’ programs while local musician, Jocelyn, performed her original song “Echo.” During the event, nine local community leaders and their professional instructors performed for a crowd of YES supporters for their chance at the mirror ball trophy! Project Harmony Addresses Back to School Pressure

Registration Now Open for the 2017 Nonprofit Summit of the Midlands

C h i l d r e n a p p ro a c h t h e beginning of the new school year with all kinds of feelings – and so do parents. As parents, we feel like we need to push, inspire, or motivate our children to excel. Some kids are great at processing and repelling these messages and others really take it to heart – maybe more than we had intended. How do you know if there is a problem and what can you do about it? The first step is to listen for self-talk – or to elicit it if you are not hearing it, and then find a private time to explore. Self-talk gives us clues to how the child has made sense of what’s happening, or in what ways he/ she is stuck with an overly negative, critical, or irrational explanation. The next step is to look for ways to help the child calm down so they can think more clearly and in balance with their emotions. Do not try to talk the child out of their negative expressions or cheer them up. Instead, listen carefully for understanding and say it back. Then, help the child to evaluate the self-talk statements by providing “Helpful Other Thoughts.” It’s an invitation used to revise some of the negative self-talk, substituting more adaptive and effective words of encouragement. Finally, listen to your own self-talk, your inner and outer dialogue as a parent or caregiver to this child. The way we talk to our children becomes their inner voice. This school year, Project Harmony encourages parents to try to keep an eye on the pressure gauge.

The Nonprofit Association of the Midlands (NAM) and D.A Davidson have opened registration for the 11th annual Nonprofit Summit of the Midlands, which is Wednesday, November 1 at the Embassy Suites Conference Center in La Vista. The annual Summit celebrates more than a decade of nonprofits helping their communities. Assistance League of Omaha: Operation School Bell® Provides Clothes for Kids in Need ®

Operation Sc hool Bell (OSB), sponsored by Assistance League of Omaha, will be held at JC Penney store/Westroads Shopping Center from October 3rd through 15th this year. Operation School Bell is the major philanthropic program of Assistance League of Omaha’s community service programs providing new clothing for children in Omaha and the metro area. Last year approximately 3,300 children in need shopped for new school clothes, shoes, and coats at the Westroads thanks to the proceeds of fundraisers such as Christmas Caravan Tour of Homes, donations, and grants. Assistance League of Omaha is an all-volunteer community service organization. Approximately 75% of its 350+ members will be working a total of 16 shifts throughout the 12 days serving children from kindergarten through 8th grade. There will be more than 10 school districts with 198 schools served by referrals from each school based on the poverty rate of the school and its population. Over 4,000 children are being scheduled for this year. Over 60,000 children have been served since OSB began is 1976! “100 Women Who Care” Awards Grant to NAMI Omaha for Ending The Silence Program

YMCA of Greater Omaha Awarded $482,800 Grant

NAMI Omaha is excited to announce that thanks to a $6,000 grant from a local group called “100 Women Who Care,” they will be able to bring NAMI’S Ending The Silence program to Omaha and area schools. NAMI Ending The Silence is a 50-minute mental health presentation in the classroom for high school and middle school age youth. Teens learn to recognize the early warning signs of mental illness and what to do if they or someone they know is exhibiting these signs. The presentations are given by two trained presenters; one is a person who has a loved one dealing with mental illness and the other is a young adult living in recovery with a mental illness. NAMI Ending The Silence instills a message of hope and recovery and encourages teens to reduce the stigma and end the silence surrounding mental illness. NAMI Omaha is a local affiliate of The National Alliance on Mental Illness. They provide free support to family and friends who have a loved one living with mental illness through education, literature, workshops, conferences, support groups and more. Thanks to the generosity of the United Way donors, the YMCA of Greater Omaha can continue to support 108,000 youth, adults, families throughout the Omaha metro. United Way funded programs include aquatics education, early childhood education for at-risk youth, Ready in Five – IC school readiness, Ready to Learn, school year & summer Out-of-School-Time, Teen Safety Net program and youth sports for at-risk youth.

Comedy Night Raises $35K for Jefferson House More than 175 guests laughed their way to raising a recordbreaking $35,000 for vulnerable children from Dodge County and the surrounding area at the 13th annual Heartland Family Service Jefferson House “Stand Up for Kids!” Comedy Night on Heartland Family Service staff sits with Hypnotist and Magician Jeff Quinn during dinner. August 5 at the Fremont Golf Club. The evening began with a silent auction and dinner. Co-chairs Jeff Hoffman and Jenny Estudillo spoke briefly before handing out the Second Annual “Spirit of Jefferson House” Award to Michelle Wiese. Mrs. Wiese was honored for her exceptional contributions to the Jefferson House, for her service to the Jefferson House Advisory Board and for being an excellent mentor to at-risk teens. Things then got rowdy with the dessert dash, a performance featured hypnotist and magician Jeff Quinn and a live auction. The highest-selling item was a Florida Getaway package, which raised $900. It included a week-long stay in a luxury resort near Disney World in Orlando with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The evening ended with current Jefferson House resident, Levi, sharing his story. The 17-year-old was a straight-A stu­dent and athlete before he started skipping school and was eventually put on probation. Once Levi arrived at the Jefferson House, his attitude greatly improved, and he attends school every day. All proceeds from Comedy Night directly support the Heartland Family Service Jefferson House, which provides residential safety to children from birth to age 18. American Heart Association’s Sweetheart Program Seeking Applicants The Sweetheart Program, founded by the American Heart Association, is a unique personal development experience for select high sc hool young women. The program is chaired by founder of Home Instead and former Miss Nebraska, Lori Hogan. These men and women will receive Certificates of Completion during a cap and gown ceremony. For most, it was the first time they had experienced a cap and gown graduation. After the service, a reception honoring the graduates and their families was held.

Response to Spiteful Note Raises Over $1,000 for FITGirl, Inc. FITGirl, Inc. alongside Michelle Bandur of KETV News was able to get a special message across in August after a meanspirited note spurred a movement to empower young girls and raise awareness for antibullying. An anonymous viewer mailed KETV’s Michelle Bandur a handwritten card with a $1 bill enclosed. The note said: “Michelle, Please accept this gift and use it wisely. 50 cents for those bags under your eyes and 50 cents for your big, fat nose. You need the help! -A Viewer.” That dollar has turned into more than $1,000 towards for FITGIRL, Inc. after Bandur posted to her social media accounts asking the public what to do with the dollar bill. The support from the community was overwhelmingly positive and Bandur heard from people who struggled with their own appearances and had similar experiences with being bullied. With the funds donated, FITGirl, Inc. is able to provide four girls with a scholarship to the 2018 FITGirl, Inc. Campowerment Experience. Bandur and FITGirl, Inc. founder Cheri Dickmeyer started a campaign called Bucks4Bandur to send more girls to camp. Together, they will continue to empower as many girls as possible and continuing to spread this anti-bullying message. Mobile Vision Van to Meet Unmet Vision Needs of OPS Students A third of Omaha Public Schools students fail a basic vision screening. More than 10,000 learners in OPS alone have an undiagnosed and untreated vision problem. Yet, for 90 percent of children, vision problems can be “fixed” with a simple pair of glasses. Children’s Hospital & Medical Center and Building Healthy Futures have teamed up to address the unmet vision needs of our community’s most underserved children. A mobile vision van, operated by Children’s and outfitted especially for pediatric vision care, will roll out to serve OPS students in early 2018. The goal for year one is to treat 3,500 students—growing to more than 6,000 students by year three. The program team will include a full-time optometrist, an optician, care coordinator and van driver. Two years ago, more than 20 individuals and entities formed a Child Vision Collaborative to create a coordinated system of vision care for Omaha’s most underserved children. The group studied the community’s vision needs, evaluated existing efforts and proposed a mobile vision screening and care concept. The collaborative piloted their program in 13 OPS schools during the 2016-17 school year. Vision screenings are planned at around 24 OPS schools during the 2017-18 school year. The screenings will be conducted by nursing students from five local nursing colleges: Clarkson College, College of St. Mary, Creighton University, Nebraska Methodist and UNMC. If a child fails the screening and needs further care, parents are given the option to either seek treatment independently or consent to have their child seen by Children’s mobile vision van during the school day. Students will be able to pick out a pair of glasses and have them delivered to school and fitted in just a few weeks.

Nebraska Medicine Clinic to Open in Elkhorn Nebraska Medicine continues to expand its primary care services to West Omaha with the opening of a new clinic. Nebraska Medicine – Elkhorn will open at 204th and Blue Sage Parkway in April 2018. Construction began in July on the 12,000-square-foot building, which will feature 15 exam rooms, five consult rooms, a procedure room and radiology services. OneWorld Awarded $438K Grant O n e Wo r l d C o m m u n i t y Health Centers, Inc. Thanks to the generosity of United Way donors, low-income and uninsured patients in our community will receive culturally respectful, quality health care at OneWorld. The Community Clinics Care for Children program meets the basic health care needs of children who are uninsured because their parents cannot provide health insurance or because the children do not qualify for Medicaid or other insurance options. With the United Way funding, uninsured children receive immunizations, screening and counseling for weight and treatment plans for asthma. The Health Supportive Services program addresses the basic needs of low-income patients with chronic conditions and diseases who are uninsured and unable to pay for necessary health care. With a United Way grant, OneWorld helps patients to achieve healthier lifestyles by learning to manage chronic conditions and diseases such as hypertension and diabetes with medical care, case management and financial assistance. The Integrated Medical and Behavioral Health Care for South Omaha program provides access to comprehensive primary medical and behavioral health care to low-income patients in South Omaha and Bellevue. With United Way funding, a primary care physician works with a clinical pharmacist, a behavioral health therapist and support staff as a team to improve patient outcomes. The International Center for Health Education program focuses on recent immigrants and refugees with basic health needs as well as infectious diseases, chronic illnesses and mental health issues. With funds from United Way, OneWorld’s Community Health Educator Registered Nurse provides immunizations, flu shots, access to physicals and medications and case management. The Promotoras for Douglas County program provides access to care to low-income, uninsured and Spanish-speaking residents of South Omaha. Free Stop the Bleed Training Offered in Nebraska In today’s wor ld it is becoming increasingly important for individuals to be trained in the basics of life-saving techniques, such as how to properly use a tourniquet and apply pressure to wounds. That’s why the U.S. Department of Homeland Security developed the Stop the Bleed Program. Nebraska Community Blood Bank (NCBB) knows how important saving lives is; our blood donors help us do it every day. 1 in 7 people who enter the hospital need blood. Depending on the severity of an accident, a single trauma patient may use many units of blood. Patients at Bryan Trauma Center, as well as other Southeast Nebraska hospitals, rely on NCBB to be there with the right type of blood they need. That’s why NCBB, in partnership with Bryan Trauma Center, is hosting free Stop the Bleed training. No matter how rapid the arrival of medical professionals, bystanders will always be first on the scene. Stop the Bleed training empowers individuals to act quickly to help save lives and control excessive bleeding. Trainings are held monthly and are hosted at NCBB’s 84th and O donor center in Lincoln. Joining Organizations All seasoned business professionals can look back and pinpoint the things that they did that helped them to succeed – exactly what got them to the point they are today and why. While what that entails does vary for each person to an extent, it’s standard that there are a few shared in common. The list goes on from there, but these organizations present many valuable opportunities and provide continued support, which are incredibly beneficial capitalize on throughout one’s career. Career-building, skill-building, character-building, network-building, resume-building; all are things that being active in a professional organization can do for you, thus making it a fundamental part of professional and personal success. For the individual, it’s all about learning, growing and getting well-connected. Relationships and resources are what you can expect to gain from membership in a professional organization. We’re fortunate to live in a community where people genuinely like to get to know each other. Professional organizations provide opportunities to meet people with whom you might not cross paths or get acquainted with otherwise. Being able to put a name with a face and have personal interaction helps you build a better rapport, and in turn, makes it much easier to get your foot in the door if it’s someone you really would like to work with in the future. Equally important, networking isn’t just effective when utilized for prospecting outside of your profession; it’s also how you stay connected within your profession. Making connections is vital to one’s success and by joining a professional organization, you’ll have a multitude of opportunities to do so – on the local level, but in many cases, regionally, nationally, and perhaps globally. Being tapped into that magnitude of network is invaluable. Professional organizations are usually composed of individuals at all different points in their careers, so it’s an exceptional melting pot of talent, experience, and many different points of view although there’s commonality in what has brought them all together. As a part of a professional organization, you are tapped into a think-tank of ideas and shared knowledge about what’s going on in your field and in the

area. That dialogue between peers is a compelling incentive to join. Mentorship greatly helps us to evolve as people and professionals. On one end, professional organizations provide an opportunity for young professionals to connect with a mentor in their field/industry. On the other, it allows seasoned professionals to offer their mentorship to the next generation. Then there are the resources available that help you stay up to date on all of the latest news, upcoming opportunities, emerging trends, new tools and research findings, etc. Additionally, most have continuing education components, with courses, seminars, trips, training, scholarships and project funding, and so on. For a business, involvement in professional organizations is a way to gain exposure among that group and by extension, the community. When a business’s representatives are actively involved and visible in the community, it enhances the brand and strengthens people’s connection to it. Establishing a presence in any given career field or marketplace niche demands going above and beyond. Putting in the work is critical to career advancement; although being involved in a professional organization may not be required by your job, it is how you get a step ahead of the competition – which is fierce in just about every industry today. In addition to improving aspects of yourself which will make you more marketable, many employers favor those who have taken the initiative to get involved with a professional organization among their peers in the business community. With respect to both an individual and a business, setting yourself apart and making a name for yourself requires significant time and effort, so it’s wise to make the most of your resources whenever and however you can. That’s what professional organizations bring to the table. Professional organizations not only play a big part in the development and success of members. With the collective efforts of its membership, they make significant contributions to our community at large. Business Technology The world of technology is ever-expanding, with practical applications in all areas of how we do business and for maximizing efficiencies in a business’s operations. Thus, the impact it’s already made is profound, and the possibilities for the future are exciting. For every problem to solve or goal to achieve, there’s a solution to be found that involves technology. In narrowing the possibilities down to what we’re able to cover in just a few short columns, we’ll touch on what we consider to be some of the most impactful for businesses. First, there’s the cloud, a term that many in the business world are already familiar, or have at least a vague understanding of what it means. The cloud, simply put, encompasses anything stored offsite. Virtualizing your server presents the opportunity to save thousands of dollars just by having it in the cloud. It eliminates the need for hardware or software upgrades in your business and reduces the maintenance and support needed. With more people moving towards the cloud, there has been a lot of innovations in that area in recent years, particularly for business use. Cloud-based solutions, or Software As A Service (SaaS), have been around for quite some time. However, the recent trend is one of more small businesses leveraging them. This gives them access to valuable technology and tools while controlling cost. Technology no longer needs to be a major investment and can grow with your business. With custom solutions like cloud storage, server hosting, offsite backups and security solutions to lock down remote connections, there are many different ways to take advantage of this tech innovation. There’s also colocation, a type of data center in which a business can rent space for servers and other computing hardware. Typically the colocation center provides the building, cooling, power, bandwidth and physical security while the customer provides servers and storage. Next up, if you’ve not heard of the Internet of Things (IoT) yet, you can be sure that you will soon. Getting ahead of the curve now should be part of your long-term business strategy if you hope to maintain a competitive edge. The Internet of Things is here, and it’s opened up a world of possibilities. Presently, and moving forward, there are about 50 billion reasons to keep up on your technology products and services. Google ‘Internet of Things by the year 2020’ and you will find many articles on the ways it is expected to transform everything about technology, even as we know it now. The Internet of Things, simply put, is anything connected to the Internet. An example of this is the ‘Smart Home,’ which applies to places of business in the same way. We now have the ability to adjust the thermostat, turn lights on and off, monitor security systems and more from a smartphone or other personal devices. Smart devices are here to stay, and now you can work securely from anywhere too. Tablets, laptops, and smartphones are all tools now used for the mobile office. By creating a VPN, or Virtual Private Network, your company can access your own private, protected data from any device with internet connectivity. The integration of technology, while oftentimes complicated and thus best left to the experts, can prove to be incredible once accomplished and put into use. Once you have it, you can’t imagine what life was like without it. Consider audio/visual technology as yet another example, and one that has been rapidly advancing too. Many businesses are looking

for out-of-the-box thinking and engineering for huddle rooms/spaces, remote connectivity, video walls, digital signage, sound masking, and more. In order to achieve your goals for audio-visual systems integration, get a professional involved as early on in the design process as possible. Ease of use, flexibility, and scalability are all important across the board with any of these or other types of technology for business use. This type of event provides a casual atmosphere where it’s easy to get to know people. I recommend having games for people to play because they’re a perfect icebreaker — they make it easier for people to interact with one another and have fun. Great food is always important.” Speaking of great food, it’s what brings everyone together. When you have a gathering in your home, where are most people hanging out? The kitchen! Anywhere else you host an event, consider it an entertaining staple. Planning an event to bring in customers, clients or prospective customers isn’t much different than an event you’d hold at your house. And in order for either to be successful you need just a few things to create a warm, inviting, and fun atmosphere—food, drinks, and good company. If you are setting up a special event where you’ll be entertaining your clients, you’ll want to line up the location and then work out the details for catering, because no event is complete without great fare! Senior Living This month we’ve still got a little left of summer yet to enjoy before transitioning into fall. Then, in what seems like a blur, it will already be time to carve pumpkins, turkeys, and hams – and all of the other good stuff that happens throughout the remainder of the year. Everything inevitably happens so quickly. That being the case, especially for seniors and their loved ones, now is the time to start thinking about the things that are needed to get through another winter happy and healthy, and to fully enjoy the upcoming holiday season. Although it might seem a little early, rest assured you’ll be in a much better position if you have a plan in place and have made arrangements well ahead of time, rather than putting things off and being forced to make decisions on very short notice or in crisis. As such, we decided to consult with the professionals a little earlier than usual this year about winter and holiday preparations just for good measure. But not to worry, we’ve also thrown in some great ideas for getting out and enjoying the beautiful fall weather while it lasts, and a lot of other important things to consider with respect to planning for the future! It comes as no surprise to us Nebraskans that the weather can easily be cause for concern, particularly at times of the year when it’s more likely we’ll experience the extremes. Although by nature it’s unpredictable, to an extent we can anticipate how it will affect us going about our lives. We generally plan according to what the conditions are likely to be at certain times as a force of habit, and that’s not a bad thing--better safe than sorry. For seniors, winter, in particular, presents its fair share of challenges and concerns. “One of the biggest concerns we see for seniors who live alone, especially during the winter months, is isolation,” says Jennifer Knecht, Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Immanuel. “As we get older, social str uctures c hange, family dynamics change. And for seniors who are retired and living alone, social experiences— something that’s so important for emotional wellbeing—require extra effort. From social gatherings to volunteer opportunities Jennifer Knecht and community events, the fall and winter Immanuel months are filled with lifestyle activities and ways to get involved. Wellness classes and lifelong learning opportunities are also ways to expand social structures while focusing on health. At Immanuel Communities, this social aspect is so ingrained in

resident life. Activities are available for all interests and lifestyles, including health and fitness. We realize that when seniors are involved socially, there’s much less risk for isolation and depression. Also, winter is often a time where seniors start considering the upkeep of their home and whether the maintenance required to get through the winter is still feasible. Whether it’s time to make a move to a maintenance-free senior living community or that decision is down the road, the holidays can be a good time to start the conversation with family, get a pulse on how much home maintenance is feasible during the winter, and start researching living options. At Immanuel, our senior living consultants provide answers to options for every lifestyle. They’re a good place to start when getting the feel of what’s out there and what services are available. Exploring senior living can be daunting, and assistance in navigating them can be helpful.” Knecht also offers advice as we approach the holidays that’s focused on the importance of self-care and support. “The holidays can be joyous times celebrating with family and friends. But for some seniors, the dangers of flu season and icy roads or the memories of friends and loved ones who may have recently passed can be difficult. It’s important for seniors to go into the holidays prepared with wellness of mind and body as the first concern. Encourage your loved ones to get plenty of exercise, eat healthy foods, and stay socially active going into flu season. Fall can be a great time to get up-to-date on vaccinations and meet with doctors about any existing health concerns. For seniors who live alone, isolation can only increase during the winter months. Social activities can help prevent the loneliness and in many cases, depression that can arise from isolation. Facing the holidays without loved ones who have passed can be difficult. Again, recognizing the need for support is important.


Reach out to aging loved ones and talk to them, especially if they’ve lost a loved one in the last year. Planning a special activity of a remembered tradition can help honor the late loved one. Depression during the holidays is felt at any age, but for seniors, reaching out can be difficult. Talking through the grief during the holidays or reaching out for medical help is just as important to wellness as exercise and a healthy diet.” During the fall months, there are also things to think about and opportunities to take advantage of before the weather takes a turn for the worse. “With the cool weather and vibrant colors, taking walks for some exercise is enjoyable,” says Phil Birkel, Marketing Director at Remington Heights. “There are many festivals and carnivals in the fall during the months of September and October. Also, during National Assisted Living Week September 10-16, many communities are hosting events for the general public that week. It’s a great time to explore senior living options. I’d also suggest volunteering. It’s a good way to get out and socialize while being productive and contributing to the community. So many organizations can use volunteers. Some organizations that need help are churches, hospitals, hospices, nursing homes and assisted living facilities, community centers, homeless shelters, disaster relief, animal shelters, schools, and so many others.” Broadening the discussion to what one might consider for the remainder of the year, he notes, “Soon enough, getting out and about will become more challenging and dangerous, as the winter months will bring an increase in falls due to snow and ice. There are the added chores of shoveling snow and treating sidewalks with ice melt to consider as well. If you have a fall, it can put a tremendous amount of pressure on everyone involved during a busy time of the year to coordinate a move to a senior living community. Planning ahead for a move is highly recommended. We often see so many seniors that need our living options because they have fallen, need surgery, or encounter another medical event that creates an immediate need. They tend to have more difficulty exploring the options when their wellbeing has been compromised, and may have to rely on family or friends to make the decisions about their senior living arrangements. Doing some research and touring the facilities that pique your interest is a good way to get an idea of where you’d want to call home in the future. Seniors should understand what each facility offers for care options and amenities. What is included in the base price? What are the add-on fees and what items are not included in the base price for care? Are there transportation fees, community fees, transfer of care costs, laundry costs, other costs? The choices of facilities often are narrowed to the quality of the facility, care provided in the facility, and price; then it’s a matter of what feels like the best choice. Most seniors have spent a lifetime making decisions of some sort and they know best the community that would be a good fit.

A huge obstacle to moving to a senior living community is getting rid of ‘stuff.’ The downsizing process certainly can be overwhelming, and giving up items you’ve owned for many years can stir up a range of emotions. If you’re planning a move to a senior living community, you may have six months or even a year to get ready. But that time will pass quickly, and downsizing will take more time and effort than you might think. What are some steps you can take now to downsize your move to a senior living community?

Stop allowing more stuff in. Items come into your home from a variety of sources: gifts received and yet to be given, clothing, housewares, books, seasonal decorations, kitchen items, furnishings, electronics and more. When new items come in, the old ones often remain in closets or end up in a junk drawer, contributing to the overall stuff that must be dealt with before a move. Before you can actually downsize, it’s vital to stop the inflow of more items into your home. Since it’s unrealistic to think you won’t buy anything new for months or longer, the best strategy is the time-tested ‘one-in, one-out’ rule. Clean out the usual hiding places. One of your first downsizing strategies should be sorting out the basement, attic, garage, shed, and other out-of-the-way spots where things tend to accumulate. Often, the items that land in these storage areas are the ones you don’t know what to do with. Regardless of the nature of the item, if it has been sitting in a shed for years, you probably don’t need it. Set aside time each week. Devote some time on a weekly basis to tackle one room at a time. Go through drawers and closets, setting aside items that can be discarded. If you think there are things your children might want, have them go through the house with sticky notes to mark the items they’d like to keep. For large or bulky items that the kids don’t intend to take, consider snapping photos to keep your memories intact without retaining the item itself. Plan to sell, donate or recycle when possible. To paraphrase the old saying, ‘one man’s trash is another’s treasure.’ Things that might not be useful to you in your new home may serve someone else well, so it’s wise to donate items when possible. Selling is also an option, although dealing with the sale of many individual items can be quite a hassle. For items that are broken or not worth donating, try to recycle. When all else fails, throw items away rather than keeping them around, and worse yet, moving them

only to discard them later. The time to get started is now, even if your move is months away. There’s no time like the present to start downsizing for your move to a senior living community. When the time comes, having less stuff will result in less stress and a pleasant moving experience. Consider hiring a professional downsizing company to assist. There are companies that specialize in downsizing for seniors.” In agreement, Theron Ahlman, Certified Senior Advisor and owner of CarePatrol of Nebraska further advises, “Although most families are always busy, I believe this time of year is a great time to go through things in the house. It’s hot outside and most are stuck inside, so why not look through old boxes to see what is needed and what can be donated or sold? At some point, most seniors are going to have to move or their house will be sold once they pass, so it makes sense to get ahead of Theron Ahlman the game and be better prepared. When asked by clients as to when to start looking I always tell them as soon as possible. Being prepared is absolutely wonderful and will only make the process less stressful, and helpful if an emergency situation comes up. Also, being in a community around the holidays can bring out the joy again for that time of year instead of depression and loneliness. Christmas trees and holiday decorations are put up by someone else, the large meals are done by someone else and entertainment is brought in by someone else, which all helps make life simpler and less stressful. Families can also reserve the different rooms at the communities, which allows the entire family to come over and spend the holidays together. All while allowing their loved one to be comfortable in their home at the community but not have to go to any extra lengths to prepare. If you know of someone who is struggling and the coming winter months might be tough on them, please reach out to us as we are here to help them find the safest and best community. Or, in closer proximity, there are great pumpkin patches in the area, but I’d advise avoiding the weekends if at all possible. Sometimes family members aren’t available to accompany their senior loved ones, but that need not prevent involvement as there are plenty of other options to consider. Getting connected with a local senior center will afford you many opportunities to take advantage of activities and social outings. Those in senior living communities also have the option of attending regularly scheduled events, and generally transportation is provided, which is nice. Or there are professionals who provide one-on-one in-home services that can be scheduled for as little as a few hours for an outing together or transportation to one. Once the temperature starts to drop, it’s easy to become homebound. As far as safety is concerned, for seniors who are able to remain living at home, and especially for those who are living alone, at the very least having a life alert or call pendant to connect you with emergency response is a good idea. Especialy for seniors who retired, staying involved socially is

important, so it’s a good idea to have some things lined up ahead of time. Especially during the winter months, there are far too many seniors that sit at home alone all day, for days on end. When seniors have lost that interaction with others and the world outside the confines of their homes, they tend to dwell on the negatives. Just watching the news, very little of which is positive these days, can cause stress and depression that’s exacerbated by continued isolation. Our mood affects everything from appetite to hygiene to energy level and the motivation to be active and social. Even something as simple as caregiver services – having someone to come over and provide companionship, monitor health and living conditions, help with tasks around the house, or take a senior out to run errands or attend an event – can be tremendously beneficial. There’s a vast amount of resources available to seniors, but in my line of work, we often find that many are apprehensive of taking advantage for a variety of reasons. Most notably, it’s a common misconception that it sounds expensive so therefore it must be, which causes people to dismiss perfectly viable options altogether. Struggling with the loss of independence is another worry for seniors; as we age, we find that we need more help, but it can be hard to ask for it because we don’t want to be a burden. But far too often I talk with people who wish they would’ve just asked sooner. Don’t wait too long and pass up opportunities, then find yourself in a bad situation. There’s no harm in reaching out for recommendations, asking plenty of questions, and seeking out help from others in your community who are here for you.” Moving to a 55+ community or assisted living facility does have its benefits, particularly since the needs of this population have been identified and everything has been thoughtfully designed around them. For some, it is a more immediate and pressing need, while for others, it’s being considered as a suitable option but there’s no big rush, or it may not be in the plans at all for the near future. For those who find themselves in the latter two categories, Jinae Cherry, PTA Director of Therapy at Brookestone Meadows offers the following tips:

It is especially important for seniors to stay active in a wellness program in the community. Since it is very easy to become more sedentary after retirement, seniors must be intentional about their activity level to remain in good health. I personally appreciate aqua wellness classes for their use of the buoyancy property to help aid geriatric adults with joint pressure relief and freedom with mobility in a safe and secure environment. If a condition you have is noticeable and beginning to interrupt your daily life, have a discussion with your doctor about ordering outpatient therapy services as a noninvasive approach to treatment. geriatric population that will help keep you active and maintaining a high quality of life. There is no age limit to physical progress! With respect to winter weather, ensure that the proper equipment and support is in place for upkeep of snow and ice such as proper footwear, snow blowers instead of shovels, or assistance with snow removal to avoid the potential for injury altogether. Our rehab department is very busy in the winter months offering therapy services to those who were unfortunately involved in ice/snowrelated accidents. I always suggest seniors ask family, friends, or caregivers for assistance with decorating their homes for the holiday season, especially with high surfaces where one would need to climb a ladder or hang decorations out of reach. There is no shame in getting support from your loved ones; in fact, take the opportunity to turn it into a tradition or memory that your family will cherish for years to come. If a gathering is happening outside of your home, I always encourage the use of handicapped-accessible transportation and transport wheelchairs, as it minimizes the difficulty and risk of injury while helping to sustain energy levels. This also includes fun activities yet this fall that many seniors enjoy out in the community, such as pumpkin patches, fall festivals, hayrack rides and costume parties.”

Key things seniors can do to prepare for the winter months ahead consist of anticipating utility bill increases and seeking resources to help ease that burden, and budgeting for essential food items. These are factors that can prove to be real budget-busters for seniors, especially those with limited incomes. Then there are the holidays, which can be lots of fun for older adults even if they’re not in the best physical or mental shape. Simply being included in the festivities brings joy and helps them enjoy the season. Nobody relishes the prospect of aging without a spouse or family member at their side or without friends to help them laugh at the ridiculous parts and support them through the difficult times.” Thomas encourages seniors to do the following to ensure the most enjoyment during the holidays: Acknowledge feelings. If someone close has died or you can’t be with loved ones, it’s normal to feel sadness or grief. It’s okay to cry and express your feelings. Reach out. Seek social support; look for neighborhood, community, church or social events. Call a neighbor. Invite a friend for cookies or coffee. Volunteer at a food bank.

Remember loved ones. Make their favorite food, share memories around the dinner table, reminisce with a photo album, and light a memorial candle. Consider donating a charitable gift in their honor or helping someone else in their memory.

Stay healthy. Get enough sleep; limit alcohol; continue exercising, even a simple walk around the block. Practice good health habits: eat right, get plenty of rest, and exercise regularly. Staying healthy reduces the intensity of the blues and its impact on daily activities. Finally, she offers insight on access to critical services for seniors. “Although there are many, one key issue that affects seniors in our community is the unpredictability of Medicaid. Medicaid provides health coverage to more than 4.6 million low-income seniors, nearly all of whom are also enrolled in Medicare. Notre Dame Housing and its residents are voicing its concerns through a postcard campaign, which will urge our elected officials to not change Medicaid’s financing structure and oppose per capita caps and block grants because they will negatively impact seniors who need long-term services and support. Social services, guided by service coordinators, empower seniors to have access to a healthy lifestyle and services. Many of us don’t really want to think about winter weather that will be here in just a few short months or all of the holiday madness quite yet (although of course there are those who wait with bated breath, we all know at least one).
