Many residents take advantage of shopping in the West Omaha area and the more than 80 acres of walking and biking trails that begin right outside the property. Come evening, residents may choose to dine in their apartments, enjoy a casual dinner at Miller’s, or dress up for a fine dining experience inside 1863, named for the historic Omaha groundbreaking of the transcontinental railroad. The Route 6 billiards room as well as the rooftop 360 Social Club are also favorite evening haunts.

“Our assisted living residents seem to really appreciate the opportunity to go to the spa for beauty and massage treatments,” Ms. Grade says, "as well as time together on the terrace overlooking the private courtyard and nightly films followed by conversation in the Carson Theater and multi-denominational chapel services. We also have around-the-clock nursing to make sure expert assistance is always available when needed.”

The memory care residence is also customized based on the latest research. The Cottonwood and Meadowlark both offer specialized dining with familiar favorites and daily specials. The Peony Park Bistro also serves the community with lighter meals in a comfortable setting. Club Car Wash, which has plans to open multiple locations in Omaha and the surrounding areas within the next year, recently hosted a ribbon cutting to celebrate the grand opening of their very first Omaha location at 4802 S 72nd St. The ribbon cutting took place on October 14 with the Greater Omaha Chamber, and the Club Car Wash team showed up in full force. Dice Communications Announces New Location at Historic 3000 Farnam Building Technology solutions provider Dice Communications is excited to announce that as of December 1, the company is moving to a new location in the historic 3000 Farnam building, directly east of Midtown Crossing.

The 3000 Farnam building, formerly known as Twin Towers, was built in 1919 and was the home of Hannan, Van Brunt, and Odell Ford/ Lincoln, also known as Western Motor Car Company. The beautiful building’s unique high-capacity elevators (located in the “twin towers”) were large enough to transport vehicles to be displayed on upper floors. Western Motor Car Company moved out a few years later, and Sears and Robuck moved in, occupying the space for 35 years before relocating to Crossroads Mall in 1960.

Since then, the building has undergone numerous renovations, including the removal of one of its signature towers and the reorganization into condo living spaces. Other upgrades include new elevators, updated cooling and ventilation systems, and an interior redesign that returns the building to the mid-century style of its heyday in the 1960s.

Lately, they have been having fun learning through Montessori methods of education. Montessori teaching encourages young children to develop natural interests and activities rather than use formal teac hing methods. One of the academy’s recent activities has included an experience in the “kitchen,” where students practiced washing fruits and vegetables, making crumbs out of crushed crackers, and pouring cups of juice.

Practicing tasks like this help children to gain confidence in their environment, and after these skills are refined, children can apply them in future purposeful work. These activities help children work on their control and coordination of movement, better concentrate, and give them a boost of self-esteem that comes with making a contribution to those around them.

Green Beans Coffee Opens Café in Bellevue Green Beans Coffee, whic h opened their first location in Millard in 2014, recently expanded into Bellevue with the addition of their newest café.

Center Sphere Raises Funds for Local Nonprofit Cross Training Center Center Sphere hosted their Annual Charity Golf Tournament on Wednesday, July 28 at Tiburon Golf Club, giving the members an opportunity to take their professional networking onto the green for an amazing cause. With the support of members and their peers, the tournament was able to raise a grand total of $10,735.

All proceeds supported Cross Training Center, a nonprofit that equips unemployed and undereducated adults through vocational training and work experience. Students learn to overcome barriers to employment caused by challenging backgrounds and circumstances, such as homelessness, incarceration, emotional trauma, and generational poverty. Center Sphere will begin taking applications from their nonprofit members for the 2022 Golf Tournament recipient in November.

In addition to raising funds via their annual golf event, Center Sphere also gives their nonprofit members an opportunity to earn for their organization by participating in the Non-Profit Ambassador Program.

Better Business Bureau Addresses High Scam Risk During Medicare Sign-Up Time The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is addressing the high risk of scams during the annual open-enrollment period for Medicare, which began on October 15 and runs through December 7. Crooks have been making calls to older Americans in which they claim to be a government representative—a “health care benefits advocate”—who can help navigate the Medicare sign-up process.

Some are lying about being able to sign folks up to get the same coverage from a better program for less money.

Scammers will tell people that they need to provide personal information, like a Medicare ID number, to start the process, but once that information is provided, crooks are enabled to scam the Medicare system out of big bucks. Such scams hurt the funding of Medicare to the tune of millions of dollars annually, which is another way they hurt all taxpayers. Scam victims end up paying twice: directly from their accounts and indirectly from the taxes paid to help Medicare recover the money lost to fraud.

The BBB recommends not trusting anyone calling you to assist with Medicare. Unless you are already enrolled, Medicare representatives will not call you, email, or text. Don’t trust anyone offering a “free gift,” a health screening, or special deal. If you want to check on the legitimacy of a call, hang up and go to the official website, Medicare.gov.

If you have been scammed or even just received a call from a suspected scammer, visit the Better Business Bureau website at BBB. org/scamtracker and report the incident. It should also be reported to Medicare by calling (800) 633-4227.

History of Veterans Day: World War I—known at the time as “The Great War”—officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as "Armistice Day." Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting in its place the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. Tell us a little about your business. - While the Cox name is familiar to many of us as our local television and internet provider, Cox Business focuses on delivering secure, next-gen technologies and platforms that enable our business customers to succeed in a digitally driven economy. My role is to provide executive oversight and holistic accountability to ensure our commercial strategy and community investments deliver on our promise for mutual growth.

How did you get started in the business? - I served in the military in a variety of roles in the U.S., Europe, the Caribbean, and Africa. I was appointed to lead digital network and systems transformations.

After leaving active duty, my career evolved into technology sales leadership where I had the opportunity to be a part of several fascinating companies as we launched innovations in software, cybersecurity, and connected infrastructure.

Tell us a little about your family. - We’ve lived all over the world.

My husband and I moved here from Louisville, KY and Duxbury, MA this past summer. Prior to that, we’ve lived in eight states, Germany, and Austria. We have four adult children—a daughter who is a doctor and army medical officer in Kentucky, a son who is a disabled combat veteran and custom Jeep mechanic, a step daughter who is a senior construction manager in New York, and a son currently in his senior year at University of Maine.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - My favorite way to experience Nebraska is from the back of a horse. Anything that connects me with nature is a blessing.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I’m a national award winning cartoonist. I’ve had several comic strips and am proud to have won several journalism awards over the years for my art.

Who inspires you? - The people I work with. I came to Omaha as a stranger three months ago and they have made me feel so welcome. We heard about “Nebraska Nice” before we arrived and are humbled by how real it is.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - A former commander of mine told me to "Always be relevant." It’s made more and more sense to me over the years.

If you had a theme song, what would it be? - “Dream On” by my hometown Aerosmith boys.

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - The Salvation Army, Town & Country Humane Society, and Habitat for Humanity. Being part of a family extends beyond our own walls and our community is richer when we provide for each other.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? - MG Lewis MacKenzie’s Peacekeeper: The Road to Sarajevo. It is a significant book that details the civil war in Bosnia. I had the honor of meeting Gen MacKenzie and worked closely with our Canadian and UN forces during this timeframe, so it has very special pertinence to me.

What is your favorite movie? - Top Gun because I was living in Vienna when it came out and it felt so American.

If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? - Marthe Cohn. She is an author, a nurse, a holocaust survivor, and former spy.

- Successfully completing a capital campaign while simultaneously growing a small- to mid-sized nonprofit organization.

Tell us a little about your business. - McGill Restoration has been in business since 1985 and specializes in restoration and preservation of masonry and concrete infrastructure. Our business is divided into four main categories: industrial, infrastructure, parking garages/ stadiums, and masonry. No matter the job, we are committed to providing unmatched quality and customer service.

How did you get started in the business? - After graduating the University of Nebraska at Omaha with degrees in accounting and management information systems, I started my professional career in public accounting. I left public accounting to join a family-owned business in the construction industry that was experiencing tremendous growth.

After being a part of the core team that helped turn a small, local business into a national company with offices across the United States, the opportunity at McGill Restoration presented itself. With previous experience working on clients in the construction industry and knowing the reputation McGill Restoration has within the Omaha community, joining the team made absolute sense and I know this is where I am supposed to be.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?

- One accomplishment that has served me well over the course of my professional career is majoring in management information systems.

Combining accounting knowledge with information technology has opened doors to work on projects I otherwise might not have gotten.

More and more, the finance/accounting department is tasked with information technology concerns ranging from data analysis to cyber security, and I am confident that is only going to increase.

Tell us a little about your family. - My wife Anna and I just celebrated our one-year wedding anniversary this past summer. I was born and raised in Kearney where my parents still reside. Anna is originally from Fairbury, but her parents moved to Kearney before we started dating, so now we get to visit both in-laws in the same city.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - My wife and I both enjoy traveling and getting out on the golf course. The ideal day off would be traveling to a new place and getting to play a new golf course!

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - It is not a specific quote but the idea of not being out worked is a mindset I had instilled at an early age from my father. You do not have to be the most talented or naturally gifted to compete at your best on any given day.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? - Assuming I can’t pick all of the super powers…I would pick teleportation or having a photo graphic memory. Having the ability to travel anywhere instantly would be amazing or being able to learn and retain high volumes of information would definitely come in handy.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - I have always been intrigued with aviation and think becoming a pilot would have been an interesting career choice. Who knows…maybe I’ll get my license one day and travel the world with a set of golf clubs.

What is your favorite local restaurant? - A spot we go to often is Railcar, but for sentimental reasons my wife and I go to Malara’s Italian Restaurant once a year.

MATHNASIUM OF OMAHA WEST Meet Noah Watkins, the center director at Mathnasium of Omaha West.

Tell us a little about your business. Mathnasium is a math-focused learning center that helps students build their competence and confidence in math. We help students from kindergarten through the end of high school with instructors who sit with students, meet them where they are, and give them strategies to help overcome any difficulties they have.

How did you get started in the business? - Originally, I went to college as a physics major, but quickly added an education major when I realized how rewarding and fun it was to help my classmates through difficult questions. I started at Mathnasium as a part-time instructor and fell in love with the ability to work with students one-on-one and get to know them. It’s been five years since I began, and I couldn’t be happier to continue to do what I love and make a difference in the lives of students.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? Overcoming the perspective that math is annoying. When topics become difficult for students they become a source of anxiety, frustration, and stress. It's a slippery slope that leads to negative feedback loops where they don’t understand a lesson, do poorly on an assignment, and tell themselves that they are bad at math.

I want to give those students the tools they need to regain their confidence in math.

Tell us a little about your family. - My dad and I will go out to new restaurants and talk about our favorite sci-fi shows. My mom is responsible for my love of math, as well as my cheesy sense of humor. I have three younger sisters who have helped me grow into the caring man I am today. Finally, our dog Maggie is the most relaxed dog on the planet.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Whenever I find myself with a free afternoon, I really enjoy a good bike ride or playing board games with a few friends.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I had to retake my first math class in college. After getting straight A’s in high school, I hit a brick wall with Calculus II. It was a new level of difficulty I wasn’t expecting, and I was too proud to admit that I needed tutoring. It took me a few months to get over that hurdle and learn how to ask for help.

Thankfully, I can look back on that experience and draw from it.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? - Cloning myself. I could be in two places at once, get more things done, play myself in chess like that one Pixar short...it’d be great.

What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? - I can bike with no hands, I think that’s pretty cool.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - I think working at a national park next to some mountains would be a grand time.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a hilarious read, but if you’re looking for something a bit more heartfelt, The Princess Bride is a classic.

What is your favorite movie? - Probably About Time, but Airplane is a close second.

What is your favorite local restaurant? - I love breakfast so I’ll say First Watch.

How did you get started in the business? - Club Car Wash was a part-time job that I took five years ago while attending school. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?

- Learning how to utilize different coaching strategies and communication styles to accommodate most effectively to the employees to promote employee development.

- Being able to help three young men starting with entry level jobs at Club Car Wash and develop them into taking general manager roles after a couple years of tenure.

How did you get started in the business? - I started designing five years ago after receiving my bachelors in design at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. I had always wanted to create, whether it was artwork or design work. I realized I was interested in the built environment after a trip to Chicago. Something about the human experience when it comes to our sense of scale intrigued me. I haven't been to Chicago since, but I'm sure it would inspire me in the same way now.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? KayStock Design has been in business for one year since August.

Before then, I didn't have the desire to own a business, and I certainly had no experience of ownership before. One of the biggest challenges I faced was the non-stop influx of information and learning that occurs when you start this process. That being said, it's been a blessed experience the whole way.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?

- I've always had a lot of confidence in my creative abilities. I thought for a long time that being creative only led to a hobby, but I started to realize that there was a need for creative people professionally and changed my perspective. This drove me to apply my creativity into design and, ultimately, start my business.

This is the quote that I always turn to when I'm feeling stressed, anxious, etc. It reminds me that feeling hopeful or faithful is available to me if I change my mindset. Which talent would you most like to have? - Being able to sew. I have always wanted to create a clothing line. Growing up, I used to fill up sketchbooks with fashion designs, and I still enjoy doing that to this day. It's such an intense skillset to know all of the ins and outs of constructing clothing—I find it fascinating.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - If I wasn't designing homes, I would want to design websites or social media content.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? - I am currently reading Atomic Habits by James Clear. It talks about the psychology behind our daily habits and the scientific study to back it up. It's interesting to read because it shows how one action develops into a whole new road in your life. "Just as atoms are the building blocks of molecules, atomic habits are the building blocks of remarkable results."

If you have been having questions or troubles with your technology, and are looking for some assistance, Do Space has an opportunity for you to receive answers.

There are a number of community partnerships happening right now at The Hope Center and Schenzel Community Center. Recently, Wakanda Elementary School and two daycare programs visited the Schenzel Community Center for a skate fieldtrip. The youth had so much fun socializing, skating, and playing games. Life Cure Foundation also recently teamed up with The Hope Center to provide yoga therapy to the seniors of the Schenzel Community Center. This partnership promotes wellness practices to help people rehabilitate back into good health.

Cyber Seniors is on Wednesdays and focuses on helping seniors in the Omaha community understand and utilize their technology.

Tech Help Saturday offers one-on-one assistance from Do Space’s dedicated volunteers in a relaxed environment. Cyber Seniors and Tech Help Saturday are drop-in programs; no registration required.

Both events take place from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Hope Center for Kids is a faith-based after-school and summer program for K-12 in north Omaha, where an average of 250 members are offered academic support in a fun and safe learning environment. Project Harmony Offers Services for Missing Youth, Addresses Runaway Prevention Month As November mar ks National Runaway Prevention Month, Project Har mony would like to raise awareness of their Missing Youth Ser vices Program. Founded in 2017, the program assists in the identification, assessment, treatment, and coordination of services to the community’s non-system involving missing youth. Project resources are also available for youth age 14 and older who are missing, as capacity allows.

Omaha Police data indicates that there are over 3,000 reports of missing juveniles under the age of 18, with 402 of the reports involving youth 13 years or under at any given time. These youth are most vulnerable to sexual exploitation, sex trafficking, and other victimization due to their young age and vulnerabilities.

Project Harmony exists to provide effective, immediate, and sensitive support to child abuse victims and their non-offending family members. Project Harmony has assembled a multidisciplinary team of law enforcement, social services, medical, and referral professionals who work together to support and protect children. If you are a caregiver or concerned party of a youth in Nebraska who has run away, please report them missing to your local police department and the Child Abuse Hotline at 1 (800) 652-1999. Santa Monica House to Offer New Level of Care for Women

A new café will soon be coming to the Omaha area to provide a unique opportunity for people that struggle with disabilities in their day-to-day lives.

Destiny Cafe was created by Joan Allen to employ and train those with disabilities for employment within the community.

Destiny Cafe will provide hands-on experience to their employees, allowing them to learn the jobs they have chosen and be ready to take their learned skills anywhere. Providing this option to disabled individuals will allow them to feel included and welcome in the common workplace and give them the opportunity to earn a paycheck for what might be the first time in their lives. Currently, 80% of people with disabilities are unemployed, and Destiny has a mission to change that statistic.

Being a mother of a son with disabilities, founder Joan Allen saw very early on the need for more job opportunities for developmentally disabled individuals. After networking with other nonprofits in the community, she began working towards starting her own employment training program for those with disabilities, and thus, Destiny was born. When college is not an option, Destiny gives those with disabilities the opportunity to receive training in various areas in order to get a better-paying job.

Santa Monica House is fulfilling their vision to offer a complete continuum of care to women by providing long term residential treatment at each level of care.

This level of care will be an Intermediate Residential Level 3.1. Open Door Mission in Need of Project Santa Toy Drive Hosts, Donations

The Rose Theater is excited to announce that their production of Corduroy will run October 29 – November 14. Based on the 1968 children's books, Corduroy and A Pocket for Corduroy, written by Don Freeman, and adapted for the stage by Barry Kornhauser, Corduroy shares the story of a toy bear in a department store and the little girl who wishes she could buy him.

“What is really cool about this piece is that we are going to be using a fairly large puppet version of Corduroy that Stephanie Jacobson, a really brilliant director and educator on our team, has made,” says Matt Gutschick, artistic director.

Corduroy will be presented October 29 through November 4 with performances Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 2 and 5 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Interpretation and captioning for the hearing impaired and audio description services for the blind will be offered at the 2 p.m. show on Saturday, November 6. A sensoryfriendly performance will be presented on Saturday, November 6 at 5 p.m. Children of all ages will delight at Corduroy’s antics in the 75 minute show.

Christian Record Services, Inc. recently announced the release of Love Does and Everybody, Always from New York Times best-selling author Bob Goff in audio, large print, and braille formats for members. This is the first time both titles have been made available to people who are blind or experiencing vision loss in braille and large print.

Goff is a lawyer, speaker, and author who founded a nonprofit foundation, Love Does, which works to promote human rights and education in current and recovering conflict zones.

The new titles are part of an online library resource available to Christian Record Services members. Through this resource, members can download books and magazines and request other resources in a number of formats: refreshable or printed braille, large-print text for eReader or paper, and audio files for use on Daisy or streaming over a computer or device. The library has more than 2,000 titles of inspiring and empowering books. Many are Christian-based, so members never need to worry about whether the content will be appropriate for others in the house that may also have access to the material.

Omaha Home for Boys (OHB) has opened its counseling services to the public, and the organization’s experienced, compassionate therapists have immediate openings for new clients. Individuals and families do not have to be enrolled in one of OHB’s programs in order to seek counseling services.

“Many of our services at OHB require enrollment in one of our programs or require a referral, but our counseling services are open to the general public,” said Chief Program Officer at OHB, Brandy Gustoff. “Because we do offer so many programs and services, if counseling clients need additional supports and services beyond counseling, they can receive those services right here at OHB, as well.”

OHB’s two full-time, experienced therapists meet with clients on the OHB campus or in the client’s home if circumstances require in-home sessions.

Midlands Community Foundation Brings Back Matching Charitable Program Midlands Community Foundation (MCF) is excited to bring back its MCF Matching Charitable Program beginning on Giving Tuesday, November 30, and ending January 5, 2022. Angels Among Us announces n ew e m o t i o n a l s u p p o r t programming for families whose c hild is battling pediatric cancer. This new programming will consist of monthly opportunities for kids and teens battling pediatric cancer and their siblings to get together, as well as opportunities for their primary care givers to gather for some respite time.

Pear Tree Performing Arts recently reopened its doors after a fouryear, multi-million-dollar historic renovation project. Facility updates include a 900 square foot stage, Hitchcock Ballet Studio, funded by the Gilbert M. and Martha H. Hitchcock Foundation, a multimedia area, and additional classroom space.

“As a mom who has had a child battle pediatric cancer, I am most excited about having more opportunities for these families to connect outside of the hospital setting and provide each other with the support that we all so desperately need during the cancer battle, which can be such an isolating time,” says Brittany Friesen, director of family programs for Angels Among Us.

The nonprofit organization, founded in 2010, provides dance, theatre, fitness, and wellness classes to the community. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017 for being one of the original Hinky Dinky grocery stores and the best representation of the chain's growth in the Midwest. The store was open from 19261963 at this location. Now, the space will serve the community as an artistic hub and full-service performing arts facility.

This new programming will also include multiple opportunities for family outings as well as a bereavement group that meets regularly and is specifically focused on families who have lost a child to cancer.

New Study Shows Significant Cognitive Gains in Students after Brain Balance Program A recent study conducted between Brain Balance and Cambridge Brain Sciences showed that students with attention and developmental challenges achieved significant cognitive improvement after the Brain Balance Program.

The program, which requires one hour of cognitive training activities per day paired with a brain-boosting nutrition plan, showed the greatest improvements on tasks of memory, reasoning, verbal ability, and concentration in students who completed just three months of the program. A total of 478 participants completed specific activities within the program that focused on sensory stimulation, body strength, coordination and timing, and exercises to improve eye coordination and auditory and visual processing. A series of 12 cognitive tasks created by Cambridge Brain Sciences were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the Brain Balance Program. The results showed that participants who completed three months of the program had improved on all 12 cognitive tasks and achieved greater improvements in cognitive performance as to participants who completed an average of just 27 days of the program.

Brain Balance, celebrating five years this month, is the leading drug-free program designed to help children who struggle with social, emotional, behavioral, and academic issues. Memory Care According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than six million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and one in three seniors die with some form of dementia. “The primary service that we provide is helping clients understand and plan for long-term care either at home or in a facility,” explained David. “We also help clients with traditional estate planning, including health care and financial powers of attorney, which clients often don’t think about because they are focused on their wills or trusts. All of these issues can be especially acute in the case of seniors with dementia. For one thing, this means that the client will require memory care, which is only available in certain facilities and is more expensive than nonmemory care. In addition, dementia makes it even more important to think about who they designate as powers of attorney because it is likely that those individuals will have to make important decisions for the client once their dementia has made it impossible for them to make decisions themselves.”

As there is no way to tell when an emergency situation may arise in which it is important to know what the client’s wishes are, David recommends that clients plan as far ahead as possible. When it comes to things such as Medicaid planning, he recommends beginning to plan at least five years in advance of needing care. life is a big indicator of something more serious. Other signs include challenges in planning or solving problems, difficulty completing familiar tasks, confusion with time or place, decreased or poor judgement, and changes in mood or personality. Of particular concern are potentially dangerous incidents, like forgetting to shut the stove off, leaving the house and forgetting how to get back, or a car accident or fender-bender.

“Early diagnosis is important, so if you notice signs of memory loss, get a full medical evaluation to determine if it’s Alzheimer’s or something else,” advised Marcia. “Knowing will help give you direction for planning: where to go for more information, what inhome care alternatives and support systems are available, how to make the home safe, and when to seek placement.”

Marcia explained that while many services can be provided in-home, it is difficult to match the range of activity engagement they offer – particularly social activities.

“Interacting with others is one of the most complicated things that human beings do, so even a healthy brain will atrophy when you take that away by isolating a person at home,” said Marcia. “Visit one of our facilities today to see what we have to offer, and further learn how we can take care of your loved one.”

Meeting Resident Needs as They Change Midwest Geriatrics, Inc. established a home dedicated exclusively for seniors with Alzheimer’s or other dementias, called House of Hope Alzheimer’s Care. The facility spans 50,000 square feet and is made up of six neighborhoods, four of which are dedicated for memory care, with 10-11 private apartments each. To feel at home, each neighborhood has a kitchen, a family-style dining room, a living room, a washer and dryer, and a whirlpool bath. They provide around-the-clock dementia trained caregivers that are certified CNA’s and Medication Aides, as well as a Nurse Manager to oversee the overall care and medical needs of their residents. House of Hope also offers Adult Day Services to individuals in the community that are in need of additional support and socialization.

Midwest Geriatrics, Inc. House of Hope is a unique option in the memory care world because they are a nonprofit organization that provides the additional support of Adult Day Services, Respite Care Services, and Vigil Dementia Monitoring System that calls for assistance when residents are unable to do so, helping caregivers provide care when and where it is needed. The system works through sensors, and doesn’t require the resident to wear anything.

When a loved one begins to suffer from memory loss, it makes things different and challenging in all aspects. To start, your loved one may not realize or want to admit that they need help. If family does not live nearby your loved one, it becomes more difficult to offer assistance.

Carly went into depth about the difficulties that come with a loved one suffering from memory loss, and how a family member can help.

“Our goal is to provide the care and level of assistance that each resident needs while also encouraging and promoting independence for the resident to continue as well as they can,” said Carly. “We are a team prepared to meet our residents’ needs as they change. Engaging our residents in social events, activities, and creating memorable moments to help with physical, social, spiritual, and cognitive aspects is a must to help our seniors living with memory loss.”
