STAR CHAT

15 minutes with Brooke McClymont The eldest sister of the Grafton-born trio, The McClymonts, reflects on their huge success over the past ten years, their hopes for the future, and their upcoming gig at CMC Rocks. v by Aislinn Dwyer

It’s been ten wonderful years of singing, recording, performing and winning awards for the McClymont sisters. When asked if she ever thought they’d be where they are today, Brooke laughed. “You never really know where you’ll end up as the years go on, but we’ve always hoped to be here,” she said. “We do pinch ourselves. We hopefully have another 20, 30, 40 years ahead.” Brooke credits the trio’s success to working collaboratively, knowing when to speak up or walk away during conflict. “After ten years we’ve got it down to a fine art,” Brooke said. “We’ve always got each others backs, we clearly get along, and we wouldn’t have made it to 10 years if we didn’t!” It’s been a massive 12 months for The McClymonts; Brooke debuted in the Australian film Spin Out, Sam hosted the latest season of Farmer Wants A Wife and Mollie gave birth to baby Ned. The girls have no plans of slowing down, with their latest album Endless releasing January 13th and their Endless Tour beginning January 25th. The girls found inspiration for Endless from their current lives, wanting to create music that reflects the “lovely stage” of life they’re all in.

“We’re just in that really lovely stage of life where everyone is content and happy,” Brooke said. “We’re having babies, we’re married and we’re happy, which we want to reflect in our music... it is really hard to write a whole album of happy songs, but we did it!

“We’ve let the fans come into our lounge room with this album and share our story. “It’s a really uplifting and lovely album.” Their upcoming tour which supplements

be safe in the water

THIS SUMMER

An increase in drownings this summer is tragic news. The warnings are clear year after year, and yet there have been almost 20 drowning deaths since last December. Swimming should be a source of enjoyment for kids and adults alike over the summer months. The following guidelines from the Queensland Government will assist you and your loved ones in keeping safe this summer. Swimming at the beach It is vitally important to swim between the red-and-yellow flags, an area of the beach patrolled by lifesavers, and has the safest place to swim. If our lifesavers can’t see you they can’t rescue you. Swimming in creeks, lakes, rivers and dams Check the current before entering the water and seek local advice before you swim. Creeks, lakes, rivers and dams can hide dangers such as submerged logs and rocks and strong currents, especially after rain. - Never dive or jump into any waterhole, as you could seriously

injure yourself if the water is too shallow or there are submerged logs and rocks - Stay away from waterfalls to avoid slipping. - Beware of boats using the waterway. - Avoid swimming near boat ramps or in boating areas. - Look out for dangerous marine animals. Swimming in pools Pool owners, please note that pools deeper than 30cm must: be registered, be fenced, have a current pool safety certificate before renting the property or when selling the property, and display a CPR sign near the pool. For adults, it’s imperative to supervise children in or around pools or spas. Regularly maintain gardens around the pool to ensure children cannot climb into the pool area. Enrol your child in a water awareness class and learn to swim classes. Learn CPR and keep your skills up to date with yearly refresher courses.

the album sees the sisters coming to Ipswich to perform at CMC Rocks in March. “We’ve been to Ipswich plenty of times, but we haven’t played CMC Rocks while it’s been at Willowbank,” Brooke said. “We’re excited to see the new site and perform in Ipswich. “We’ll be there watching the whole night on Friday, but we’re so disappointed to be missing the Dixie Chicks – we all love them!” With such an amazing array of accolades, albums, songs and more, it’s hard to imagine what the next step will be for the McClymont sisters. “It’s good to keep things interesting and we’re not afraid to dive into different avenues that our music has brought us,” Brooke said. “We see a lot of familiar faces that have been coming to our shows for the past ten years that continue coming and wanting to listen to us play. “The first 10 years have been awesome, and I hope the next 10 will be even better!” The McClymont sisters are performing the first night of CMC Rocks, Friday 24 March, or purchase their fifth album ‘Endless’ from the 13th of this month. Steve Croft has had an extensive educational career, commencing as Head of College in 2007. Before taking up this role at the College he was a principal at another school for eight years, and has pursued a career in education for a total of 41 years. Through connecting with the College and wider community, Steve embarked on several roles and projects that led to the growth of TSAC, including the design and build of the Secondary Campus. He was also instrumental in the re-location of the secondary students to the newly built campus in April 2008, and the opening of ‘The Tiny Tartan Kindergarten’ in 2012. During his time as principal, TSAC underwent significant expansion, with classes now offered in Kindy to Year 12. The school and has grown to approximately 925 students, with 100 staff members.

To honour his contribution to the local community, the entry to the Secondary Campus of the College has been officially named ‘Steve Croft Court’. “It has been a pleasure and privilege to have led The Springfield Anglican College over the past nine years,” he said. “I believe the College is in a very good place and in very good hands. It is an exciting time for the College community as it welcomes its new Principal, as it looks to the future with anticipation.” While the TSAC community will sorely miss Mr Croft, his replacement Darren Pitt is a committed Anglican educator and established leader within the education community.

Become your best self in 2017 Skip the complex and boring resolutions this year by following these five simple resolutions - ensuring a happier, healther (and wealthier!) you in 2017. The start of a new year often prompts us to make all these grand, and often ridiculous, New Year’s Resolutions.“New year, new me!” am I right? But, by the time January 31st rolls around, we’ve given up on the treadmill, forgot about any form of budgeting, and the promise of “being a kinder person” is well and truly out the window. Here are five simple resolutions to stick to so that you are a happier, healthier and wealthier person by December 31st!

1. Get more sleep Any excuse for more shut-eye sounds good to us! However, ensuring you get a good night’s sleep each night can improve your mood, concentration, memory and immunity, as well as assisting with maintaining your figure. Win win! The Sleep Health Foundation of Australia recommends 7 to 9 hours for adults aged 18-64, while 65 years and over should aim for 7 to 8. 2. 52-week money challenge Budgeting can be hard to stick to, sometimes unattainable, and let’s be honest - boring! The 52-Week Money Challenge is simple (and a bit fun!). You start by putting away just $1 in the first week of the year, and then gradually increase your savings by a dollar a week throughout the year. So you save $2 in Week 2, and so on until you’re stashing away $50 a week in December. By the end of year, you’ll have saved $1,378 without putting a dent in your spending.

Time for an eye test With the new school year just around the corner, now is the perfect time to get your child’s eyesight tested, to identify any problems with their vision. Children with poor eyesight tend to fall behind during the school year, not often realising that their eyesight is at fault. Since reading, writing and computer usage are all integral parts of the school day, it is vital to care for your child’s eye and vision care. Alison, the resident optometrist at The Optical Superstore in Ipswich CBD, said the most common symptoms of poor eyesight in children include: w Blinking w Red or watery eyes w Difficulty concentrating w Covering or closing one eye to read w Holding a book or handheld device too close w Squinting or sitting very close when watching television or other screens w Complaints of headaches or blurred and double vision.

If your child suffers from any of these symptoms, or needs a new prescription before the school year starts, visit the friendly eye care specialists at The Optical Superstore in Ipswich at Shop 263, Ipswich City Square, Ipswich, or phone to make an appointment on 3812 9511.

3. Travel The wise Dalai Lama once said, “Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.” Too often, we get bogged down in the stresses and routines of daily life and forget to unwind with a little adventure. It doesn’t have to be expensive – explore parts of South East Queensland you’ve never seen, or use the money from the 52-Week Money Challenge to plan for something a little more extravagant! Somewhere overseas would be nice.

4. Exercise, the way you want! The first week of January sees gyms across Australia full of keen exercisers to maintain their fitness goals. By the end of January, they’re almost empty. Choosing a way to exercise that you enjoy is the best way to have a happy and productive workout that you’re likely to stick to – meaning those 2017 weightloss goals will be easier to attain. 5. Your annual check-ups There’s no use maintaining resolutions 1 to 4 if you’re ignoring your general health. Seeing a doctor to monitor things like your blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, and more, should be done regularly—it gives you a big-picture view of how your health is doing and any potential areas of improvement. It’s also important to be taking preventive measures like mammograms, dental check ups and monitoring changes in your health.

PROFESSIONAL CARE FOR PETS Booval Vet Hospital is celebrating 50 years of veterinary care in Ipswich. Over those 50 years the team has evolved, changed and grown along with the community it has served. Booval Vet Hospital has been caring for the pets of Ipswich since 1967. They have clients who are sons and daughters of clients they have seen over the years, creating strong community ties and valued relationships. Being a part of the lives of their clients and

their much loved pets from the day their new puppy or kitten require their first vaccination to the time they must say goodbye to that much loved pet and family member is a testament to the longevity, success and professionalism of the Hospital and the team.

The passion, care and focus that keeps the team providing a gold standard of patient care is driven by the practice partners Dr Jason Wendt, Dr. Scott Campbell and Dr. Craig Render. Between them they have over 60 years of combined veterinary experience, and have built a

STUDIO 188 WITH SHANNON GRIFFITHS

ALLIED

‘Allied’, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Robert Zemeckis stars Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard as two foreign operatives who fall in love behind enemy lines when tasked together on a secret mission in Casablanca, amidst the ongoing grief of World War II. One part period romance, two parts espionage thriller, this high intrigue wartime epic blends great performances and perfect set design with an impressive script to deliver a well executed recreation of the 1940’s in a solidly entertaining film that does its best at putting a twist on the classic ‘who can you trust?’. Under orders to assassinate the German ambassador, while posing as a married couple, Royal Canadian Air Force intelligence officer Max Vatan (Pitt) and French resistance fighter Marianne Beasuejour (Cotillard) must fool everyone of their love for one another until they eventually grow close and their love becomes real. Despite both acknowledging that in their line of work feelings can get them killed, the two take the risk and soon escape to London to be together. Later learning from his superiors that his beloved new wife is suspected of being a German spy and not who she says she is, Max must take matters into his own hands, seeking answers through the ravaged war torn streets of London and Paris in order to save not only the life of Marianne who will be killed if found guilty, and his own. This ultimate dilemma makes for an interesting game of who will live and who will die, as the audience is left to guess until the very end - and it’s a dramatic ending. With first class performances from its supremely talented leads and featuring a sense of realism reflective of the human condition, Zemeckis adds yet another fine title to his renowned catalogue with a film that demands your attention. *4.5 stars/5

‘The Edge of Seventeen’ Hailee Steinfeld stars as a 17 year old misunderstood girl in The Edge of Seventeen, the latest in the line of teen centric turned coming of age stories that’s actually surprisingly great. Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig with a refreshingly smart script bursting with excellent dialogue and well written characters, this less of a teen movie and more a movie about a teen mixes edgy humour with enough 80’s nostalgia to make John Hughes proud. Injecting new life into the genre by being relatable to everyone and anyone who ever went to high school and who’s a daughter, son, brother, sister, father or mother, this honest and sometimes brutal look at the ups and downs of growing up and the awkwardness that often comes with is not only one of the year’s best films but undoubtedly one that everyone can enjoy. Suffering from a personal tragedy a few years earlier, Nadine (Steinfeld) is an angst filled teenager who hates almost everything and thinks life is awful. Relating to only her best friend Krista, who she loses when she starts to date her older brother, her life is turned upside down and seems to become more unbearable as all of a sudden she feels more alone than ever. Soon though, with the help of her teacher, Mr. Bruner (played brilliantly and hilariously by Woody Harrelson in what could be the best high school teacher seen on screen) and a young classmate named Erwin, Nadine may come to find a glimmer of hope as she realises her family and people around her do care, and that perhaps life won’t be so bad after all. Proving just why she’s an Academy Award nominee, portraying a high school girl perfectly with ease, Steinfeld leads an exceptional cast in what is a true gem of a modern day high school centred classic. *4.5 stars/5

BACK TO SCHOOL FEATURE

IT’S A NEW SCHOOL YEAR Whether you’re shoving the kids out the front door for their first day back to school, or holding back tears as your little one starts Prep, these tips may ease the transition from holidays to school. 1: Keep lunch boxes easy Lunchbox ideas do not have to be tricky. As long as your child is receiving a variety of wellbalanced and nutritional meals through the school day, don’t worry about spending hours every morning preparing lunch. Meal prepping in advance can be beneficial, to save time during the school week. It’s also important to be mindful of any allergies of other children in the cohort, so keep that in mind before packing the peanuts. 2: Create a laundry routine Back to school means back to washing all of those dirty socks and uniforms! Create a routine and ensure your children know to not leave any dirty items of clothing hidden in backpacks. 3: Make mornings organised Set a morning routine for yourself and the kids that allows enough time to fix morning

mishaps. A good idea is to print out a schedule for your children and stick it to their bedroom doors eg. Wake up at 7.00am, breakfast at 7:15am, etc. 4: Keep to a routine Clocks will be one of your most useful devices once the kids reach school age. Explaining time, routines and showing them how to read the time for themselves will give your kids the power to keep themselves organised, without having to nag! 5: Ready, set breakfast As per the lunchbox rule, keep breakfasts simple and nutritious. Not only will this fuel them for a busy school day ahead, it will also avoid nasty sugar highs or sluggishness throughout the day. Teach your children how to make simple breakfasts for themselves to help the morning run even smoother!

6: Talk about problem issues Be prepared for problems as the school term wears on – bullying, behavioural problems, friendship issues are just some of the things your child may encounter. Begin a dialogue with your child about potential issues they may experience before they head back to school. Keeping in regular contact with your child’s teacher also allows potential problems to be caught early. 7: The night before Lay out the uniforms, have lunches already sorted and make sure the camera batteries are charged for those first day at school (or back to school) photos! Try to hold back the tears if it’s their first day – save it for when you get back to the car. 8: Keep your cool With all that emotion in the air, try to keep a cool head - they are counting on you!

Children’s feet are vulnerable to injury as they continue to develop into their late teenage years, so it is important to be able to recognise a few more common lower limb aches and pains that can affect your child. Flat Feet Flexible flatfoot or a pronated foot is a condition usually caused by loose ligaments within the feet. Flat feet can cause aching feet or legs, especially during or after exercise. Other problems can include poor balance’ poor coordination, tripping over, bunions, heel and knee pain. Treatment with orthotics may be required for flat feet. Heel Pain/Severs Disease Severs disease is an injury to the growth plate of the heel bone where the Achilles tendon attaches, commonly affecting active children aged 10 to 14. Your child may experience pain at the back of the heel bone, worsening with exercise. Initially, it is best to reduce exercise, ice the painful area and check the fit of your child’s footwear. If pain persists, consult a Podiatrist.

Frequent Ankle Sprains An ankle sprain occurs when there is a sudden twisting motion at the ankle during weight loading. This can overstretch or even break the ligaments resulting in pain, swelling, bruising and the inability to weight bear. If your child sprains or twists their ankle frequently, a Podiatrist is able to manage this through exercises and the use of orthoses. Growing Pains Growing pains are harmless but can affect children from three years of age through to adolescence. They often occur of an evening and affect either behind the knee or the calf and thigh muscles. There are numerous causes including muscle tiredness and poor postural control. Growing pains will not affect the way a child walks or runs although lower limb biomechanics can be an attributing factor to the problem. For the best fitting shoes and runners, drop into Sportsco Riverlink or phone 3281 1227.

Get ready for Prep

one of six acer touch screen laptops!

Prep is the first year of school and provides the foundation for your child’s education. From 2017, it is compulsory for Queensland children to undertake Prep prior to Year 1. Prep is a full-time program in primary schools. Children attend Monday-Friday, generally from 9am-3pm. Children must be 5 by 30 June in the year they enrol. Parents enrolling their child in school have the option of an early or delayed start. Enrolment age variations may be due to a child’s development and readiness, and could improve their ability to learn. Read more about early and delayed entry to Prep and allocation of state education. Delayed start to Prep It is not compulsory for your child to attend the Prep year as soon as they are old enough—5 by 30 June in the year they enrol. You can delay their entry by 1 year if you feel they are not ready, but when they start school, they should still start in the Prep year.

Parents who decide to delay their child’s start in Prep may choose to keep their child at home or in an early childhood education and care service. Parents may also apply to access an Early Childhood Development Program for children with a disability through existing regional processes. Students with a disability All children are entitled to attend the Prep Year at their local state school. Schools provide support services to assist students with a disability so they can be included in local Prep classes. For more information, including provisions for students with disability and information on the Education Adjustment Program and Disability Policy go to www.qld.gov.au/education/ earlychildhood/ind.

orange is not the new blonde Cool-toned blonde is in, warm and brassy blonde is definitely OUT. Sticking to these four guidelines will ensure your hair - and your bank balance - are healthy this summer.

There are two things that should not be orange - your spray tan or your blonde locks. This summer, we’ve got the lowdown on how to maintain the on-trend cool toned blonde, without ruining your hair.

1. Keep your roots dark For a low-maintenance look keep your regrowth dark. Contrasting roots enhance both warm and cool complexions, so almost anyone suits this look. It’s a big bonus for blondes who are naturally brunette; embracing your natural roots will save you time and money! 2. Good shampoo/conditioner One thing that baffles most hairdressers is that so many of their clients spend big bucks for a glamorous cut and colour, but skimp on a decent shampoo and conditioner. Supermarket hair products (for the most part) contain nasty chemicals and formulas that are bad for your hair and your hair colour. This is especially bad for blondes, who need to use a good quality blonde shampoo (either silver or blue toned) to ward off those unwanted brassy colours. Most importantly, bleaching is not the friendliest process, so invest in a nourishing shampoo and conditioner to bring back

some life after excessively lightening your locks. Ask your hairdresser’s recommendations on what shampoos and conditioners you should use. 3. Olaplex, Olaplex, Olaplex! Ah, Olaplex.. without this magic in a bottle, it’s likely that many women would have no hair left! Olaplex is a bond multiplier, meaning it activates with the colour, restructuring your hair at the same time as the colour. Gone are the days when going from brown to blonde

meant snapped and brittle hair. Olaplex fixes that, so ask your hairdresser to use it during the bleaching process. Purchase a bottle of Hair Perfector No 3 to use as a weekly treatment and it will continue to strengthen your hair between appointments. 4. Patience So you’ve seen Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner go from black tresses to white blonde hair overnight and you’re thinking to yourself, “aw yeah, I could do that!”, forgetting that you are not a multi-millionaire celebrity with wizards for hairdressers. Good hair takes time, effort and patience. If you’re not wanting to spend hours in the hairdresser chair (or don’t feel like paying hundreds and hundreds of dollars), slowly lightening your hair with foils and gradually going lighter each appointment is your best bet. Photos: Gigi Hadid nails the cool-toned blond look. Julianne Hough adds a bit of depth and contrast with her darker roots.

WELCOME to our

defence families

The greater Ipswich community extends a warm welcome to new Defence personnel and their families transferred to RAAF Base Amberley, and encourages them to become part of the fastest growing and most progressive region in Queensland.

The Air Base at Amberley is home to squadrons of aircraft that form part of Australia’s air combat capability, along with an increasing number of Australian Army units. In reality, it is the largest Defence base in Australia. The base is less than 10 km from Ipswich, which is the residential home of the majority of Defence personnel and their families who call Ipswich home. As the major employer in the region, the Department of Defence presence is vitally important to the local economy, and Ipswich prides itself in being a welcoming community, especially towards Defence families.

The Ipswich region offers a combination of proximity to the air base and a diversity of interests in a major city that now has more than 180,000 residents. The positive connection between Ipswich and the Defence community has never been stronger, with Defence families now living within and indeed forming part of this vibrant and growing region. To the east is Brisbane and to the west the rural areas of the Brisbane, Lockyer and Fassifern Valleys. The city is positioned on the national road network - 40 minutes drive from Brisbane, an hour’s drive from the Gold Coast and 60 minutes to domestic and international air and sea ports.

Ipswich offers all the modern facilities and attractions of a progressive city. Attractions include the Ipswich Art Gallery, the Workshops Rail Museum, steam trains, more than 500 parks, wineries, cafes, restaurants, cinemas and shopping centres. The city hosts national and local festivals and events such as CMC Rocks, the Ipswich Cup horse racing carnival, drag racing’s finest at the Winternationals at Willowbank, Supercars at Queensland Raceway, the Ipswich Festival and the Ipswich Show. All that remains is for Defence families to get out an enjoy all that the region has to offer.

RAAF AMBERLEY - 76 YEARS ON Australia’s largest Defence Force base

Welcome to Ipswich FROM MAYOR PAUL PISASALE

On behalf of all residents I extend a warm welcome to Defence Force personnel and their families recently posted to RAAF Base Amberley in the City of Ipswich. Our region is forging ahead with the current Ipswich population approaching 200,000. This is predicted to increase to 520,000 by 2041. Ipswich has much to offer new families and is rightly famous for many things, from a rich heritage to an extraordinary history of railway and mining, but none as important as our well known relationship with RAAF Base Amberley. The men and women who serve at Amberley are a part of Ipswich’s thriving community. We thank all Defence personnel for their service and sacrifice. We encourage new arrivals to get to know their new home city and enjoy the tremendous facilities Ipswich has to offer. Our fabulous parks and recreation areas have first rate attractions such as the zero-depth water play area at River Heart Parklands, the free Ipswich Nature Centre in Queens Park and the world-class Orion Lagoon at Springfield Central. Our vibrant cultural heart means fine food and

entertainment is never far away. Ipswich Art Gallery is one of the most visited regional galleries in Australia with exciting exhibitions featured throughout the year, including hands on activities at the Children’s Gallery. Ipswich Civic Centre is also a great choice for entertainment with a variety of local, national and international shows throughout the year. Council’s website Ipswich. qld.gov.au and Discover Ipswich Discoveripswich. com.au are great places to learn more about our great city and what’s on around the region. Welcome to the Ipswich family. We look forward to enjoying your company soon.

RAAF Base Amberley officially commenced operations in June 1940. After World War II, its role shifted from aircraft maintenance towards operational flying, with the relocation of the RAAF’s heavy bomber squadrons and later by the RAAF’s rotary and tactical airlift units. The air base has also been home to Lincoln Bombers, Canberra Bombers, F-111 strike aircraft, Caribou transport aircraft, Chinook and Iroquois helicopters. The base is now home to the F/A-18F Super Hornet, C-17A Globemaster and the KC-30A Multi Role Tanker Transport HERON RPA. The C-27A tactical airlifter and the EA-18G ‘Growler’ will join these aircraft types.

Early History In December 1938, 882 acres of land in the Parish of Jeebropilly were gazetted for Defence purpose at Amberley. Located on the overflow floodplains at the confluence of the Warrill Creek and Bremer River the land was known as “Jeebropilly”, an indigenous name translated as ‘Swamp of the Flying Squirrels’ The northern part, owned by a pioneer family, the Colletts, was named ‘Amberley’ after their country of origin in Sussex England. So, Amberley had indigenous ‘flying operations’ long before the arrival of the F-111s and Super Hornets. Construction of RAAF Air Station Amberley commenced in 1939 and operations began in June 1940 with the formation of No 24 Squadron, No 3 Recruit Training Depot and No 3 Service Flying Training School to provide recruitment and training for RAAF aircrews operating AVRO Anson and CAC Wirraways. After the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the US Army Air Corps established an Air Echelon on-base and shipped in many fighter aircraft (Kittyhawks, Airocobra and Dauntlass) in kit form for assembly at Amberley for the Pacific War effort.

With the formation of No 3 Aircraft Depot, Amberley developed into a significant aircraft assembly, salvage and maintenance facility. In 1942, No 23 Squadron relocated to Amberley, equipped with Vultee ‘Vengeance’ and Bell P-39 ‘Airocobra aircraft, then deployed to New Guinea area for light bombing support duties. In 1944, the squadron was reformed as a Heavy Bomber squadron equipped with B-24 ‘Liberator’ bombers, which were deployed to carry out bombing missions in the South Pacific. Amberley Air Station also hosted other units transiting through to support the war effort. In particular, the only US Air Force squadron to be formed outside the United States, the 75th Fighter Group. Post-war, No 82 Wing relocated to Amberley equipped with B-24 ‘Liberator’ bombers. This preempted the transformation in the post war role of Amberley as the RAAF’s major bomber base. Nos 1, 2 and 6 Squadrons were equipped with AVRO ‘Lincoln’ bombers. No 23 Squadron then reformed as an RAAF Active Reserve unit and still remains an active unit at RAAF Amberley to this day.

Year of change for NDIS 2017 will be a year of significant change for those living with a disability. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) begins 1st July 2017. For many people, the NDIS will allow them to access funding that will bring greater choice and control in their lives. An estimated 8,000 people across the Greater Ipswich region will join the NDIS between July 2017 and June 2018 representing a combined annual investment of $360 million by 2020. One ambition of the NDIS is to bring new and innovative services to the disability market, services like Empowered Futures based at 73 Brisbane Road, Bundamba. Owner operators Brett & Carolyn Swann are service providers, bringing innovative and creative solutions to the everyday challenges of living with a disability. Driven by their own experience as parents of a daughter with multiple disabilities, Brett & Carolyn bring passion, experience and professional knowledge to families and individuals who live daily with the challenges that disability can present. Empowered Futures is quickly developing a reputation for the delivery of individually tailored, high quality supports. For the first time in Australia, those living with a disability will receive support based on a human rights model - that each person can live with autonomy, to know and be known by those in their communities, and to have a good life.

The Jet Age & Helicopters The era of subsonic jet aircraft came to Amberley in 1954, with the arrival of GAF ‘Canberra’ bomber to replace the propeller-driven ‘Lincoln’. This transformed the air base into the modern era jet aircraft and later, supersonic fighter aircraft. The Australian Army began its presence at Amberley in1960, with No16 Light Aircraft Squadron equipped with Bell ‘Sioux’ Helicopters and Cessna “Bird-dog” observation aircraft. From the mid-1960s the RAAF waited with great anticipation for the arrival of the long-range, supersonic strike aircraft, the F-111, only to be thwarted by structural issues that grounded the jet in the United States. The RAAF would have to wait five years from expected delivery date before it got its F-111s. With aircrews and maintenance personnel trained, and a capability gap a real prospect the Federal Government decided to lease 24 F-4 ‘Phantoms’ as an interim capability, enabling most of the Canberra fleet to be disbanded. Helicopters became a major part of base activity from December 1971, when No 9 Squadron with its Bell UH-1H ‘Iroquois’ helicopters relocated

to Amberley following active service in Vietnam. The F-111 - Finally The iconic swing-wing F-111 touched down on Australian soil in June 1973, to serve with No 1 and No 6 Squadrons, and became a familiar sight in Ipswich and Australian skies. Australia’s love affair with the F-111 centres on its raw power and its famous ‘Dump & Burn’ flypast at air shows and major events nationally.

The F-111 added massive air power capability to Australia, with its 2500 nautical mile range (unrefuelled) and being able to carry a massive bomb load. Tactical Transport Also in 1973, No12 Squadron reformed with the twin-rotor CH-47 ‘Chinook’ helicopter. The Chinooks were a familiar sight in the region providing mostly troop-lift for the Australian Army but also humanitarian missions. The Chinook was withdrawn from RAAF service and the squadron disbanded in 1989. In 1992, No 38 Squadron, based at RAAF Base Richmond, was relocated to Amberley, to provide tactical transport support for the Australian Army with its DH-4C ‘Caribou’ aircraft. The Caribou, which had seen active service during the Vietnam War, served for many years providing troop-lift and humanitarian support - including operations from remote airfields in Australia, Papua New Guinea and Iran Jaya.

Amberley Super Base In the early 1990s, Amberley began redevelopment into a Defence Super Base recognising its geographic location and impressive air combat and air transport capability. The year 2000 began a new era for the air base, with major base redevelopment planning

implemented, which has since provided facilities for the relocation of the Army’s 9th Field Support Battalion and new RAAF operational units. Airlift and Air Refuelling Now a familiar sight over Ipswich, the massive C-17A ‘Globemaster III’ arrived in 2006, first with four aircraft, then six and finally eight aircraft assigned to the squadron. Two years later, the RAAF took on a new opertional support capability with the KC-30A MultiRole Tanker Transport aircraft, which added a new dimension to combat operations support. RAAF Amberley has also experienced growth in the Defence Corporate and Industry sector, with Boeing, Tasman Aviation, Raytheon, Tenix and other industry companies taking up residence on the air base.

Era of the Super Hornet The arrival of the first tranche of F/A-18F Super Hornets in March 2009, assigned to No 1 Squadron, began a new era in air power capability at Amberley. The Super Hornet replaced the ageing F-111, withdrawn from service in June 2011, four decades after it rolled off the production line in Fort Worth. A variant of the Super Hornet, the EA-18G ‘Growler’ Electronic Warfare aircraft is expected to arrive during 2017, adding to the air power capability on-base. More Australian Army units call Amberley home base Already home to the 9th Force Support Battalion the Australian Army presence at RAAF Base Amberley is set to increase, with plans to relocate the 17th Construction Squadron from Holsworthy Barracks in Sydney early this year. The 9th Force Support Battalion (9 FSB) is an Australian Army logistics battalion, with its headquarters at RAAF Amberley. The Battalion provides strategic heavy lift vehicles to convey tanks, armoured vehicles, major construction plant and bulk stores. Formed in August 1998, 9FSB brings together a number of supply, medical, military police, maintenance and transport units. It is part of the 17th Combat Service Support Brigade and its role is to provide third line or ‘general’ support within an area of operations. Squadron personnel are trained as plant operators, carpenters, plumbers and electricians. The Battalion’s motto is ‘Ubiquitous’.

The relocation of about 140 army personnel with the 17th Construction Squadron colocates the squadron with its parent unit, the 6th Engineer Support Regiment. Headquarters 6 ESR and the 21st Construction Squadron are already at Amberley. Concentrating the Army units at Amberley aims to enhance the command and control of engineer units in south-east Queensland and to improve the overall operational and training effectiveness of 6 ESR. With more than 600 regular soldiers, 6 ESR is the largest of the Royal Australian Engineer regiments. YEAR OF THE ‘GROWLER’ EA-18G COMING TO AUSTRALIA

The Super Hornets of No 1 Squadron will soon share the skies over Ipswich with a new combat aircraft variant, the EA-18G ‘Growler’ assigned to No 6 Squadron. Aircrews and ground crews are now training in the United States to operate and maintain the ‘Growler’, and will begin ferrying them home to Amberley soon. The RAAF is buying twelve Growlers, which are highly modified Super Hornet airframes, and when in full operational service early next decade, Australia will have the only tactical Airborne Electronic Attack Capability in the world outside the United States. In RAAF service it will work with other Defence Force assets, such as the Navy’s new Air Warfare Destroyers and Army’s

combat units to identify, jam and when necessary, destroy enemy radar and communications systems. Electronic Attack (EA) is the offensive suppression of an adversary’s electromagnetic spectrum, primarily radar and communications. systems. In today’s technologically dependent air combat environment, denial of those systems would seriously impede an adversary’s ability to function effectively. In warfare, information is everything; you can’t defend against what you don’t know or can’t see. The EA-18G is one of the few aircraft types capable of operating in a high threat environment. Growlers aim to roll back the adversary’s air defenses. They achieve

this through Suppression of Enemy Air Defence (SEAD) firing the AGM-88 High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missiles at emitting enemy radars), airspace dominance, and rapid reaction support (jamming). In an air combat situation, the enemy’s Early Warning systems provide tracking info to targeting systems, and they pass this information down to the shooters (defending aircraft and ground-based missiles primarily). If this information pathway is interrupted by EW, target engagement becomes far more difficult. At Amberley, 6 Squadron will be working towards an Initial Operational Capability (IOC) planned for mid-2018. Photo: Two US Navy EA-18G ‘Growlers’ in formation. (US Navy)

A SLICE OF AFGHANISTAN

COMES TO IPSWICH CIVIC CENTRE Ipswich will be transported to the frontline of Afghanistan, when Australian diplomat turned singer-songwriter, Fred Smith performs at the Ipswich Civic Centre on March 25. Fred Smith brings the dust, heat, frustration, fighting and camaraderie, captured in his poignant and witty album Dust of Uruzgan, to Ipswich audiences on March 25th. Fred was the first Australian diplomat sent to work in Uruzgan Province, southern Afghanistan, and the last to leave. In the words of Colonel Jason Blain speaking in an Australian Story feature about Fred, “He’s actually walked in the same footsteps of those soldiers. He ate, he slept, he bathed, he worked, he lived with them - and when soldiers died, he mourned with them.” Dust of Uruzgan combines storytelling, song and images by military photographers, and is said to move audiences to both laughter and tears. Fred’s performance will also give the audience a chance to

understand the experiences of the 20,000 Australians who served in Afghanistan, many of whom live in Queensland, so they don’t have to walk the land as strangers like a generation of Vietnam War veterans did. The tour is supported by The Playing Queensland Fund and arTour. These are initiatives of the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland, part of the Department of the Premier and Cabinet. The tour is also supported by the Australian Government’s Anzac Centenary Arts and Culture Fund. arTour’s Creative Broker, Luke Harriman, said Fred Smith was one of Australia’s most interesting songwriters, with two decades working on peacekeeping missions in Afghanistan and the South Pacific, touring in America and

travelling the Australian festival circuit. “Fred’s guitar served as a bridge, not only to the troops, but also to the people and tribal leaders of war-torn Afghanistan. His songs have become anthems for soldiers and their families, and his masterful storytelling can help Queensland audiences connect with the reality of service on the frontline,” Mr Harriman said. The two-hour performance is recommended for audiences over 12 years old, with parental guidance, due to themes of war. For further information and booking enquiries, visit www. ipswichciviccentre.com.au.

Airlift and air refueling Through 2017, RAAF Amberley will ramp up to become the major airlift base in Australia, with the C-17 ‘Globemaster III’ and KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport fleets being joined by a squadron of C-27J ‘Spartan’ tactical transport aircraft arriving this year. No 36 Squadron With its fleet of eight C-17A aircraft No 36 Squadron conducts strategic air transport tasks in Australia and overseas, along with humanitarian missions worldwide. The C-17 entered RAAF service in late-December 2006, and has been in constant demand over the past 10 years on a range of tasks, including resupply of equipment and deployment of Australian Defence Force personnel into the Middle East area of operations. The C-17 is crewed by two pilots and a loadmaster and can carry 70 tonnes of equipment. The wide-body cargo area is large enough to accommodate helicopters, tanks and other military vehicles. Passenger load is up to 130, and it is

designed for aerial despatch of paratroops or cargo. The C-17 has a range of some 10,000 km (6,200 miles) unrefueled and can operate from short and unsealed airstrips. With air refueling from a RAAF KC-30A or other tanker aircraft the C-17's range is only dependent upon crew capacity. No 33 Squadron With its fleet of five KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transports, No 33 Squadron provides Air Force with an air-to-air refuelling and airlift capability. The KC-30A is able to transfer fuel mid-flight to receiver aircraft, either through the hose-and-drogue system, or through the use of a boom. This flexibility enables the KC-30A to air refuel a range of RAAF aircraft such as the

F/A-18F Super Hornet, E-7A Wedgetail, C-17A - even another KC-30A. It will also be able to refuel the new F-35A Joint Strike Fighter and the C-27J Spartan. No 35 Squadron Operational test and evaluation of the C-27J is being conducted at RAAF Base Richmond west of Sydney, along with routine training ahead of the move to Amberley. The new aircraft will provide battlefield airlift but are also capable of conducting airlift in our region. They can operate from rudimentary airstrips in Australia and overseas and can support humanitarian missions in remote locations. Photos (L-R): C-17A takes off from a remote airstrip. AviationCentre open to the public

While access to the air base is restricted to personnel who work there, aviation enthusiasts can get their dose of military aviation history at the RAAF Amberley Aviation Heritage Centre. This is a must-see attraction for anyone interested in military aviation. To cater for those interested in Australian military aircraft and history - and to promote links between the community and the defence forces - the Heritage Centre allows a close up look at the aircraft that forged our military history. There’s a World War II Boston Bomber, the wreckage of which was extracated from the jungles of Papua New Guinea and brought back to Australia to be fully restored at the restoration centre - even down to the ‘combat patches’ on the airframe skin to repair bullet holes. A controversial era of Australian military history, the Vietnam War, is represented by a Canberra bomber of the type that flew bombing missions out of Phan Rang in South Vietnam 1967 to 1971 with No 2 Squadron. Also of that Vietnam War era is a DHC-4 Caribou tactical airlifter, which served at Vung Tau, South Vietnam as part of RAAF Transport Flight, nicknamed ‘Wallaby Airlines’. Caribou crews of 35 Squadron flew missions from the air base at Vung Tau, South Vietnam. Other aircraft types include the CAC Sabre and the Mirage IIIO fighter jets. Sabre jets undertook ground attack sorties against communist insurgents in Malaya during the Malayan Emergency, and were the first RAAF combat elements to be stationed at Air Base Butterworth, Malaysia replaced by Mirage IIIO of No 75 Squadron RAAF (1967-1983). In the modern era, the F-111 strike/reconnaissance aircraft provided the primary strike

capability for Australia, with its massive bomb carrying capability, flying range and the photographic reconnaissance capability of four of the jets. The public perception of the F-111 centred mostly on its famous ‘dump and burn’ flypast at airshows and other events. The flaming spectacle was created by releasing fuel from a dump-valve below the tailplane, then using the engine afterburner blast to ignite the trail of fuel behind. Luckily, the flame doesn’t ‘catch up’ with the fast-moving F-111. Also on display are Australian Army Pilatus Porter, Sioux and Iroquois helicopters, and even an immaculate WWII Jeep. The Heritage Centre is housed in four hangars and is growing constantly, as more aircraft and artifacts are restored, loaned or donated for display. The Centre is open to the public on the third Sunday of each month (except December and January) between 9am and 3pm, with base access ceasing at 2:30pm sharp. Admission is FREE, however, donations are gratefully accepted. Souvenirs are available at the Heritage Centre’s Shop. For more information, call 1800 623 306 or email RAAF.AAHC@ defence.gov.au

BILLION DOLLAR EXPANSION AT AMBERLEY AIR BASE Work is now well underway on infrastructure projects at the air base to accommodate and provide services for the rapid expansion of air power capability at RAAF Base Amberley. Squadron Leader Matt Clarke, the Base Support Manager says that 2016 was one of the busiest years yet, in terms of base development, with about 10 projects in the pipeline. “Over the next four years the projects planned total is just on one billion dollars,” he said. One of the first projects to commence will provide construction of facilities for the Australian Army’s 17th Construction Squadron’s move to Amberley next year, with its 200 soldiers. “Another major project is to provide facilities for the squadron of ten C-27J Spartan aircraft, replacing the Caribou aircraft, bringing around 300 RAAF personnel onto the base, requiring similar facilities to those for the eight C-17s with 36 Squadron,” Mr Clarke said. With the number of C-17s on base increasing from the original four to six, and now eight, and the government deciding to buy an additional two KC-30s a new hangar and tarmac area needs to be constructed for 36 Squadron. Approval for this $220 million project is expected this year. Under a Flight Line Master Plan area a large parcel of land to the west of the runway will become tarmac space for heavy air lift aircraft types and facilities for 36 Squadron, creating a heavy air lift operations precinct parallel to the main runway. Existing squadrons flying the C-17 Globemaster, KC-30 Multirole Tanker Transport and F/A-18F Super Hornet will be joined in the future by the

C-27J Tactical Airlift Squadron, the Growler EA-18G Electronic Warfare Squadron and the Heron UAV flight. For No 6 Squadron, with its 12 new EA-18G Growlers, new facilities equivalent to those of No 1 Squadron (Super Hornets) will be built. Space is also being reserved for any future new squadrons, such as any possible move to Amberley of other aircraft types. This realignment of the operational and support precincts will also involve road diversions and relocation of some facilities close to the runway. Under a national project Amberley will get a new Air Traffic Control Tower and the existing Fire Station will be replaced. The new Air Traffic Control tower will be positioned on the eastern (Ipswich) side of the main runway. Under the 20-year plan the iconic Amberley ‘corner’ that has been a feature of the base for more than 75 years will go, and become part of the Air Base’s history, along with the aircraft types that have operated there. On the domestic front, a new multi-level carpark will be built to provide parking to service the operations precinct on-base. “Amberley is already Australia’s largest air base, and when these projects are completed it will be our largest Defence base,” Mr Clarke said. “Most projects will be completed by 2019, with small project elements continuing after that.” Photo: C-17A ‘Globemaster III’ over the Amberley air base. 70 years for No 23 Squadron

One of the longest serving squadrons at RAAF Amberley is No 23 (City of Brisbane) Squadron. While now a nonflying base operations and training unit, the squadron conducted bombing missions against Japanese forces during World War II. Formed in 1937 at Laverton west of Melbourne, 23 Squadron flew Avro Ansons and Hawker Demons, relocating to Archerfield in 1940. Equipped with CAC Wirraways and Lockheed Hudsons, the squadron conducted seaward patrols and escorted shipping in the Brisbane region.

In June 1943, the squadron was equipped with Vultee Vengeance, as it prepared to deploy to New Guinea to conduct dive bombing raids from Nadzab air base, and in February 1944 flew its first bombing missions against the

Japanese. The squadron also provided aerial support at Saidor to American ground forces. The squadron's time in New Guinea was short-lived, as it was brought back to Australia in March 1944 and the ill-suited

Vultee Vengeance withdrawn from operational service. Later that year, the squadron re-equipped with B-24 Liberator Bombers and deployed to Long Airfield in the Northern Territory in April 1945 to conduct bombing and anti-shipping missions over the Netherlands East Indies until the end of the war. On return to Australia, the squadron was based at RAAF Station Tocumwal before moving to RAAF Amberley in 1948, redesignation as No 6 Squadron. Re-raised as a Citizens Air Force unit based in Brisbane. The squadron initially flew P-51 Mustang piston-engine fighters

Learn to play beautiful music

For all your back to school needs including print music, reeds, manuscript books, instruments and accessories

The sound of people learning really is music to the ears of Nathan Goodger, owner of Tone Town Music at Booval. Nathan has been teaching music for more than a decade based at WestMAC Anglican college. He also offers private tuition throughout the region. Nathan purchased Tone Town as a home base for his teaching operations, and to give musicians access to a store offering high quality instruments and repairs, with advice backed by knowledge, passion and experience. Two teachers are on hand, with classes to suit all ages and experience levels. Nathan has three children and sees the positive influence music has on a child’s development. “Children are drawn to music, it helps them build fine motor skills, improves their complex reasoning ability while developing spatial awareness and language,” he said “For our youth, music is a valuable way to express their inner dialogue and have a platform to interact positively with the world around them.” As the only music store left in Ipswich, Nathan says it’s a service needed in the area. “Music is a part of the daily life of so many people, so having a store close by with staff they can trust adds to the experience of owning and playing musical instruments,” he said. Teaching offered includes all aspects of guitar, banjo and ukuleles, and there are plans to expand the curriculum to include voice training and piano.

“Here at Tone Town we stock high quality Australian made Orsmby electric guitars, Matons and Cole Clarks but we also offer a full selection of brass, woodwind, amplifiers and synthesises,” he said. “We also offer a full service including restrings, repairs and instrument appraisals.” Tone Town is a distributor for local Luthier, Ross Wohling, who builds Soul Guitars. With the new school year fast approaching, why not enquire about your child learning the gift of music? Tone Town stocks musical necessities for the school year, including school band books and brass and woodwind instruments. Additionally, they stock a full range of accessories including cables, drum sticks, keyboard stands and print music. Tone Town Music is located on 124 Brisbane Road, Booval and are open 6 days a week. For more information, you can contact them on 38121880.

Combat support for Air Power A major Defence support capability has its headquarters at RAAF Amberley. Combat Support Group provides flying squadrons with world class air base support critical to the conduct of air operations in Australia and while deployed on missions overseas. CSG activates and secures air bases, enabling squadrons to operate in potentially hazardous combat-related roles knowing that the air base, wherever it may be in the world, can support the mission rate of effort. CSG operations focus on three main areas, the ‘sharp end’ of which is providing expeditionary combat support capability, essentially setting up an air base away from fixed air bases. CSG also manages 14 fixed air bases around Australia, providing air base services for flying squadrons to generate and sustain air power. The third role is to provide the Air Force’s expeditionary health capability; being able to conduct aeromedical evacuations of military and also civilian personnel. This is an important role for CSG, in partnership with the air mobility squadrons: stabilising sick and wounded patients, then flying them out to safety, with medical treatment provided onboard the flight. On-location medical facilities

ranging from a first aid section to a minihospital with surgical capability can also be established. The Combat Support solution is considered a world leader in providing organic support air combat operations. From deployments to East Timor to set up airfields almost 20 years ago to operations in the Middle East for more than a decade, CSG has been at the forefront of base activations and a range of expeditionary combat support services, which is CSG’s core business.

RAAF Amberley is one of the bases supported by CSG, with more than 7000 personnel expected to be on-base by the end of the decade. CSG’s 25 units spread across Australia and at Butterworth in Malaysia maintain a close relationship with the flying squadrons. The previous Commander of CSG, Air Commodore Scott Winchester said, “Our focus for the future is to maintain continuing capability in our three primary roles and to ensure that we keep pace with what we call our ‘5th Generation Air Force’, with the new and advanced aircraft and systems being introduced into service. “We are determined that our air base capabilities keep pace with our capabilities in the air, that our services are modernised, digitised and synchronised with the new combat air capabilities.” Photo: Aeromedical evacuation via C-17A ‘Globemaster’ is a core role of Combat Support Group.(Defence)

Mouthguards from The Denture Lady are made from heavy duty, flexible, hard-wearing vinyl. Custom made mouthguards may reduce the chances of tooth damage or painful injuries to the lips and mouth. Mouthguards help to absorb force and guard against potenially serious damaged jaw or concussion. Custom made mouthguards

Plant care over Summer Don’t let your gorgeous flowers and plants wilt over the intense summer period! Julie from North Tivoli Nursery has a few tips to ensure your garden flourishes throughout the warmer months. Mulch and deep water your plants once or twice weekly. Doing this during hot and dry weather can stop your plants drying out, particularly those in pots. Newly planted plants will need a little more watering. Shade, shade, shade! If you can, one of the best ways to avoid the loss of water through evaporation is shading your plants. Shade can be achieved naturally by the canopy of large trees and other plants, or created by the side wall of a house, screen or shade cloth.

Shade prevents your garden from drying out and protects sensitive plants from harsh direct-sun exposure. Fungal diseases and pests. When the weather is humid, fungal diseases can thrive in your plants. Depending on the plant or tree, it may require anti root rot or a fungicide – ask Julie what will suit your plants best. Summer also means pests like caterpillars and mites feasting on your plants or veges, so again, consult Julie on what products will be most suitable for your garden. For more tips on how to keep your garden lush this summer, call into the North Tivoli Nursery at 222-224 Mt Crosby Road, North Tivoli.

Following the success from his leading role in Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, Eddie Redmayne has managed to capture fans’ attention off screen with his sweetheart attitude and dapper dressing style. Redmayne experiments with bold colours, textures and patterns and has truly mastered the trick of executing any style from Hollywood black tie to offduty casual. Most importantly, Redmayne is not afraid to embrace his fair skin and freckled complexion, working with colours and textures that compliment his features. His wide, infectious smile is the

perfect accessory to any outfit, and is a necessity for anyone wanting to confidently (and successfully!) execute a bold style of dressing like he does. Redmayne shows that men can have just as much fun with fashion on the red carpet as his female co-stars do.

Top: Only Redmayne could pull off the impossible – a green Burberry velvet suit. Left: Redmayne takes the classic threepiece suit and makes it interesting, using a dark grey tweed material and navy button up to suit his fair complexion. Right: Maintaining class in casual attire, Redmayne rocks a burgundy pullover with beige chinos and blue moccasins.

freshen up

Here’s the latest celebrity gossip and entertainment news from the world of stage, screen and television.

YOUR SPACE

The New Year is here and it’s time to freshen the living space in your home. You don’t need to undergo a huge renovation to freshen up the home. If you’re looking to make a few small changes around the home, we suggest purchasing a few new décor pieces or changing the colour scheme to liven up your living space. 2017 trend forecasters are suggesting that the days of marble and copper are “so 2016”, so we have given you a quick style guide that will have your home looking “up-to-theminute”, minus the hefty price tag! Utilise your wall space In a room where floor space is limited, it’s important to make the most of your walls by using every inch for home decor. Utilising wall space allows you to completely change the way a room looks without buying excessive throw rugs or cushions that clutter the space (which also saves you money!) If your walls are looking bare, spice them up with colourful artwork, install wall shelves for storage and don’t forget.. the wall itself! Add some flavour with a colourful patterned wallpaper (we hear tropical style is making a comeback) or go for a brightly painted accent wall. Green is seemingly the colour interior designers are opting for in 2017, whether it be emerald or a bright green. Interesting.. Texture, texture, texture If you’re running short on home decor ideas that will add depth to your

scheme, look no further than texture-rich décor. One of the easiest ways to add interest to a neutral colour palette, and create a cosy and inviting space is buying items with contrasting textures. When shopping for new decorative pieces for your home, look for items that you would want to reach out and touch: silky curtains, woven straw baskets, shiny metals, and weathered timber frames. Contrasting textures will create a visual feast when colours are muted and patterns limited, and can even have a dramatic effect. Prints and Patterns Something that is easy and inexpensive to introduce to your living space are different patterns. As per the wallpaper suggestion above, tropical style prints are making a comeback. Adapting a tropical throw pillow to a plain couch adds intrigue without being too “in your face”. If that’s still too much for you, geometric patterned items are an easy way to curate the space.

Australian rockers Sticky Fingers announced an indefinite hiatus after admitting to “dealing with internal issues in the band” for some time. In a post on the band’s Facebook page, they also admitted to seeking external help to rectify the band’s issues. According to the post, the band’s problems had “heightened to the point where it’s not fair to anyone involved” and they’ve “looked for help to try to get through this”. The band’s last gigs before the hiatus began were over the New Year period.

If you thought the Kardashian clan had already taken over your television screens, be prepared for another show – Revenge Body with Khloe Kardashian. The show focuses on 16 overweight participants getting the help of several celebrity trainers, challenging them to achieve their body goals. Kardashian said the television show was inspired by her own struggles with body image. “I was always overweight as a kid. If I was stressed out or sad, I would eat,” Kardashian told E! News. “So, I had to learn how to then put all of my energy into something positive and healthy

Are Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth relocating to Australia? Cyrus has previously said that if Donald Trump was elected as the President of the United States, she’s “moving to Australia”. If that’s not enough of a reason to move down under, there are rumours to suggest she’s considering a move from The Voice US to do a stint at The Voice Australia. Interesting! We wonder if the couple will set up camp in Byron Bay where Hemsworth’s brother, Chris and wife Elsa reside.

Could this really mean Yeezy for President 2020? Maybe not, but Kanye West has been spotted meeting with President Elect Donald Trump at Trump Towers. This meeting comes just weeks after West was released from hospital for exhaustion. Sources told E! news that the controversial pair were discussing a role for West, as Trump is interested in using him for an “entrepreneurial leadership role”. An insider also told E! news that it was Trump that sought out West, saying Trump thinks West is “a great role model when it comes to business.” It’ll be interesting to see whether the pair remain friends after witnessing the tumultuous friendship between West and President Obama.
