BRAIN POWER TO COCKTAIL HOUR Author, adventurer and human guinea pig Todd Sampson seeks to inspire local entrepreneurs and innovators alike at Ipswich Central Library’s Cocktail Hour. If you can imagine it, Todd Sampson has probably done it. Climbing Mt Everest, hunting and eating a baboon in Tanzania, Canadian-born Sampson leads an extraordinary life. Through his television series RedesignMyBrain, Sampson shows the human brain can be trained to conquer the challenges of everyday life. Delving into the science of brain plasticity, Sampson has undergone extensive brain training in order to learn nine new mental skills. He has enhanced his mental endurance, flexibility and pain management. He also learns to control his fears, develop better decision-making processes, and discovers the benefits of meditation to reduce stress. Using death-defying stunts to prove the strength and plasticity of the human brain, Sampson impresses experts, scientists and worldwide audiences. Ipswich people will be taken on a scientific journey of discovery with Sampson at the South Street Library on Friday, 4 November.

Todd says we have the ability to improve it at any age and at any time, and his talk at Cocktail Hour aims to show the audience how to boost their brain power. He will also provide them with the practical tools, strategies and techniques to improve the power of the brain. “Creativity has the power to change the world, but fear has the power to stop that from happening,” Sampson said. “The most successful leaders and organisations of the future will be the ones that can successfully balance both. “In today’s parity world, creativity is the last remaining competitive advantage in business.” Councillor David Pahlke said Sampson’s visit would follow successful events with Tara Moss and William McInnes earlier this year. “Todd is an innovator who represents everything that we’re trying to achieve here in Ipswich, in terms of becoming a smart city that engages, inspires and interacts with leading thinkers and entrepreneurs

from all walks of life,” Cr Pahlke said. “Todd’s work with the human brain shows what we’re all capable of and looks at ways to improve our minds at any age and at any time. “Like Tara Moss and William McInnes before him, Todd will provide an insight into his career and his life away from work.” Ipswich Libraries has worked hard to attract Todd Sampson to Ipswich, endeavouring to attract a new audience to the library. “People who can see the benefits of lifelong learning would be interested in many of the emerging technologies offered here in Ipswich, to help people reach their goals in life,” Cr Pahlke said. Todd is very passionate about the advantages of libraries and spent much of his spare time as a young person in the library, which put him in good stead to continue to learn. Cocktail Hour with Todd Sampson will start with drinks and finger food at 6pm on Friday November 4, followed by Sampson’s presentation at 6.30pm and signings at 7.30pm.

Walk and ride plan for a healthier, active city Ipswich residents will now be able to make smarter and healthier transport decisions under a new transport plan. The plan, launched to coincide with National Ride2Work Day, is based on the iGo City of Ipswich Transport plan. A culture shift in the way residents think about transport is essential, given increased traffic from the rapid population growth. Mayor Paul Pisasale said council needs to encourage more people to embrace active modes of transport. “The more people we can get out from behind the steering wheel and onto the pavement or on a bicycle the less congestion we will have on our roads and the better will be our city’s health and wellbeing,” Cr Pisasale said. Pointing to the economic, environment and community benefits, Councillor Cheryl Bromage said Council considered why people cycle or walk over taking the car, what can be done to encourage more people

to choose active transport, and the infrastructure needed now and into the future. “Among the goals is for walking and cycling to account for a combined 14 per cent of trips by the time Ipswich’s population reaches 435,000,” Cr Bromage said. Key short-term actions in the iGo plan focus on transport projects such as the completion of the Brassall Bikeway and the planning and development of the Goodna and Deebing Creek bikeways. Extending the railway line from Springfield Central to Redbank Plains and expanding the Healthy Active School Travel (HAST) Program are measures also advocated. Instruments Accessories Print Music Sales Repairs Music Tuition

The sound of people learning to play an instrument is music to the ears of Nathan Goodger, owner of Tone Town Music at Booval. Nathan has tought music for more than a decade, based at WestMAC Anglican college, and he offers private tuition. Nathan purchased Tone Town as home base for lessons, and to give musicians access to high quality instruments and repairs, and professional advice. Two teachers are on hand, with classes to suit all ages and experience levels. Nathan sees the positive influence music has on a child’s development. “Children are drawn to music; it helps them build motor skills, improves their complex reasoning ability while developing spatial awareness and language,” he said. “For our youth, music is a valuable way to express their inner dialogue and helps them interact positively with the world around them.” As the only music store left in Ipswich, Nathan said it was a service the area couldn’t be without. “Music is a part of the daily life of so many people,” he said.

Teaching includes all aspects of guitar, banjo and ukulele, soon to include voice training and piano. “We stock Australian made Orsmby electric guitars, Matons and Cole Clarks and a full selection of brass, woodwind, amplifiers and synthesises,” he said Tone Town is a distributor for local Luthier, Ross Wohling, who builds Soul Guitars. They stock a range of music accessories plus print music and school instrumental books. Tone Town Music is located on 124 Brisbane Road at Booval, open six days a week. Call 07 38121880. Furniture Court celebrates 5th Birthday ...and opening a new store in Beaudesert David Holdorf and the team at Furniture Court Ipswich have two big reasons to celebrate: their 5th birthday in Ipswich and an exciting new business venture in Beaudesert. Furniture Court Ipswich is excited! This month marks five years serving Ipswich, offering the best in home furnishings to the people of Ipswich, coinciding with another exciting milestone for owner David Holdorf: a third store opening soon in Beaudesert. “A big thank you to all our customers in Ipswich and surrounding areas is certainly in order,” David said. “Their continuing support has allowed us to branch out and expand.” David credits the success of his stores in Ipswich and Boonah to the wealth of knowledge he has gained from being in the furniture business for more than 20 years. Starting his journey in furnishings David worked in his parent’s store in Boonah while in high school. He worked on the sales floor and naturally grew with the business, eventually buying out parents Ray and Roslyn’s store.

“The family business model just works,” David said. “The extra services we offer really sets us apart from our competitors. “From having our warehouse on-site here to assembling the

new furniture and taking the old furniture away guarantees repeat business. The way you see the furniture on the shop floor is the way you get it from us, and our customers really love that.”

David decided to expand to the third store in Beaudesert because of popular demand and expected growth in the region. “The locals are excited about us opening... there’s been a real buzz about town,” he said. “Being a smaller town, I think the residents appreciate the arrival of a family owned business.” The new store is expected to open very soon, before mid-November. On the local scene, David and the team want to share their excitement with their customers, with a mammoth 5th Birthday Sale, with a minimum 20 per cent off storewide - and there’s up to 50 per cent off the famous LA-Z-BOY range. Why not drop by at 30 South Street, Ipswich and join in the celebrations, and snare a great bargain. Photo: David Holdorf and his team can advise on how to get a good night’s sleep.

GREENING YOUR BACKYARD With the demands of daily life, it can be difficult to follow through with doing our part for the environment; often our plans to have a positive impact tend to fall by the wayside. But the good news is, creating a more sustainable backyard is much easier than expected, and the work can have some great benefits. Matt Leacy, co-founder and creative director of Landart Landscapes and President of the LNA Master Landscapes Association, has an easy guide to get us started. Matt says, “Greening your backyard is really important in creating a more sustainable way of life. Basically, the aim is to reduce your environmental footprint. I have five really straightforward tips that

10 LIFESTYLE | NOVEMBER 2016

anyone can do to create a backyard that doesn’t have a negative impact on our environment.” Step 1. Drought resistant plants. “Planting drought resistant, waterwise plants is a fantastic choice for any garden. Plants will survive the dry Australian summer, requiring much less water,” Matt says. Step 2. Grow your own veggies. “Having a herb and vegetable garden is an easy way to help the environment and reduce your grocery bill,” says Matt. “There’s nothing more satisfying than eating a salad with veggies made from your own backyard. “My personal favourites to grow are tomatoes, lettuce and cucumbers. If you have kids this can

be a fun activity for them to help with as well.” Most herb and vegetable seeds can be found cheaply at your local garden centre, just make sure to check that you are buying the right plants for the right seasons. Grow the things you would normally pick up at the supermarket. The less you buy there the better you are doing for the environment. Step 3. Install a water tank. “Installing a greywater system or at least a water tank is a great way to reuse water that would otherwise go down the drain,” says Matt. “This can be a good way to make the most of the limited resources you have. Water from your bath, kitchen and household can be used on your garden. It is important to check local council regulations to see what type of system you can install.” Step 4. Use eco-friendly materials. “When buying materials for your garden or DIY project find out the source and how the materials have been produced. Hardwood timber should be from a sustainable resource that has been certified. Non-toxic paints are more

sustainable and eco-friendly and can be found easily in local hardware stores. Another thing to look out for is an excess of packaging of materials. Try to avoid buying items with too much packaging waste. Step 5. Make your own compost. Making your own compost system is simpler than you think. “It’s a great way to recycle your leftover veggie scraps which would otherwise go in the bin, and use them to help your garden flourish,” Matt said.

Shelley Craft’s tips for a flooring ‘reno’ Carpet Court ambassador Shelley Craft suggests following these three steps before beginning your DIY project. 1. Set a budget. Your budget is probably the single most defining element of your renovation. A good rule of thumb is that projects always take 20 per cent longer and cost up to 20 per cent more than you think 2. Decide the look beforehand. Look to magazines, blogs or Pinterest for inspiration and narrow it down your favourite pieces. 3. See it in 3D. Carpet Court has created a 3D Design Studio, a revolutionary design tool that helps renovators create virtual 3D rooms to see which flooring options best suit their space. Just upload pictures of your own home, or choose from a selection of room designs, and experiment with Carpet Court’s range of DIY flooring options. These steps will ensure you are well prepared for your renovation process, and help minimise any nasty shocks during your DIY!

Respite hub offers help and hope for disabled people A new day-respite hub in Ipswich combines technology and compassion to give the region’s disabled people greater options for social enterprise. The Hub on Brisbane Road offers families and carers the option to drop in during their day or spend the day enhancing their skillset. Programs offered meet the physical needs of an individual, helping them find creative solutions to everyday challenges. Dubbed the mad scientist, Yvonne works as a support officer creating devices made from simple circuits that replicate more expensive items for use in the centre. Inventions include an eye tracker for speech communication made from safety glasses and circuits, touch sensitive fingertip pads for signalling and movement, a touch tv remote made from a clipboard, a container and a cheap mobile phone, converted to a speech output device.

“I make these creations from bits and pieces; they make the simple things like choosing a TV channel and flipping a magazine on your own possible,” Yvonne said. “Doing something independently makes a huge difference in their lives and gives people the freedom to develop their identity.” The Hub aligns with the National Disability Insurance Scheme’s transition from a welfare model to one of empowerment, with programs encouraging inclusion, identity and social enterprise. The scheme will roll out in Ipswich next year. Empowered Futures founders’ Brett and Carolyn Swann said the new system was a welcome change. “People can feel trapped by their disabilities, so we connect them with technology that enables them to communicate and let the world know them as an individual.” Photo: Brett Swann, with Grace and ‘mad scientist’ Yvonne.

While twenty of the world’s most deadly 25 snake species call Australia home, many people are unsure how to treat a snake bite. St John Ambulance first aid expert Mark Richards said there were many myths surrounding first aid treatment for snake bites. “A common myth is sucking the venom out of a snakebite; this will simply spread the poision to another person and you will have two victims instead of one,” Mr Richards said. “Do not wash the bitten area or try to catch the snake. Your first step in any situation is to follow the DRSABCD action plan (Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR, and Defibrillation).” Mr Richards said it is important to ensure the casualty is relaxed, to slow down the time it takes for the venom to go through the body. “Apply a pressure bandage with immobilisation, then splint the bandaged limb,” he said. Common symptoms of snake bite include a headache, nausea, drooping eyelids, drowsiness and problems speaking. Mr Richards emphasised that irrespective of what type of snake bite it is, always call triple zero

FASHION STYLE

FASHION IN ELEGANT PASTELS Think gellato and fizzers, fairy floss and minted ice-cream, these delicious treats have springboarded designers into a lolly-land fashion binge.

Soft pastels and candy colours will be on trend for the Australian Summer. Floating dresses in colours of an ice-cream parlour have been gracing the catwalks in Europe and New York. Unlike previous bolder pastels, this season will focus on a softer muted version that is subtle yet beautiful. These gorgeous feminine colours often left in our infancy have been reborn into our fashion forward wardrobes. Pastels are expected to move into all aspects of style and will be the dominant hues of slips, stripes, sequins and even bomber jackets, plus will complement the current trend of frilly romantic detailing. The soft pretty palette has replaced the bold block colours of the autumn winter season to offer a more delicate look. Experts are suggesting the trend will move into all aspects of fashion including home soft furnishing, shoes and accessories. Even makeup will enjoy the pastel touch. Bright bold colours will be replaced with their softer counterparts including colours such as peached pink, soft mint, hydrangea blue, lemon chiffon, coral and taupe.

What better way to celebrate our soft, sensual femininity then with creamy candy pastels. Homestay needed for international students Springfield Central State High School is asking the community to host International students through involvement in an International Homestay Program that promotes cultural understanding. The Homestay Program is overseen by Education Queensland International, which operates in 75 Queensland Government Schools. Springfield Central State High International Student Program Coordinator, Kelly Macklin said the program has positive outcomes including encouraging students to understand cultural differences and building lifelong friendships. The program requires families to provide a safe home environment where international students can experience the Australian lifestyle and practise their English conversational skills. In addition to three nutritious meals a day, families also need to provide transport to and from school and school related activities. Access to household items, such as towels, sheets, blankets and

Honda opens doors for people with disabilities FOCAL Community Living in Ipswich has received a donation of more than $10,000 from the Honda Foundation to assist in providing access into and inclusive facilities in their centre in North Ipswich. The application for funding assistance was sponsored by Leisa and Glen Stallard, owners of Blue Ribbon Honda at Yamanto. Leisa said that they were pleased to support FOCAL in their project, knowing the history of ex-staff from the Challinor Centre, previously known as the Ipswich Mental Hospital, who began FOCAL after the Centre closed down in 1998. The acronym FOCAL is derived from ‘Friends of Challinor Aid League’. “We believe in the goals of FOCAL, particularly their support for carers and helping people who are living with disabilities, and the organisation’s background stemming from the Challinor Centre,” Leisa said. “We know firsthand how important are carers in the community and the financial support they need to carry on their work, so we were pleased to support their application through the Honda Foundation.” FOCAL Community Living is a not-for-profit organisation that provides services and support for people with disabilities, their families and carers in the Ipswich region. Services include programs

to develop leisure, social and vocational skills to help encourage independent living in people’s home and the community. The donation will provide FOCAL Community Living with the ability to install disability friendly doors and better access to the centres in North Ipswich. FOCAL Community Living CEO, Mickael Blanc, said this would make a huge difference to the community. “The generous support of Honda made these projects possible and will benefit the local community for many years.” The Foundation provides assistance to local communities and foster goodwill among Honda Australia, Honda Motor Vehicle Dealers and the public. It draws funding from Honda Dealers and Honda Australia. The camera was a Canon EOS 5D Mark III, 1/25 sec shutter speed, f22 aperture, ISO200, 24mm focal length using a 24-70mm Tamron lens.” Gail has just returned from a two week trip around the Northern Territory taking photos while on tours around the ‘Top End’. Gail also enjoys taking photos of interest in the Ipswich region, and uses photography to remind others that it is the smaller things in life that are also important. “I usually research the subject and give a few points about the photograph so I can raise awareness in the community about what is in our area,” she said. “I enjoy going out on field trips to source material to photograph, and I can’t wait to get home and see just what I have captured when I upload the images to my computer.” Gail’s website hosts a gallery of her work. BRIDES & EVENTS ...and more Put your best face forward... it’s your wedding day! Let’s face it, when it comes to weddings the bride is the star of the show. Whether you’re booking a makeup artist or doing it yourself there are several points to consider. Follow this four step guide and you will have one less thing to worry about on your wedding day! Decide on your bridal look. First and foremost, you should decide on a makeup look that you’re comfortable with and one that suits your hairstyle and dress. Makeup artist Baillie Heck says while most brides opt for a minimalist look, there is room to play with a more intense, Hollywood glam style. “When it comes to bridal makeup, a natural look is by far the most requested,” Baillie said. “For the minimalist who prefers the simplest makeup I concentrate on a perfect complexion. “A beautiful peachy blush, a few individual lashes and the perfect brow is enough to polish the simple yet flawless look.” For those wanting to go for a more intense makeup, Baillie suggests focussing on browns, golds, champagnes and warm blending tones for the eyes.

“Lovely dark colours that soften into the inner corners of the eye give the illusion of larger, sexier eyes, perfect for your big day,” she said. “Big lashes and bold cheekbones are paramount for the execution of this sexy, modern look but again, you must nail the foundation to achieve a successful result.” Do a trial run. Doing a complete run through of your desired makeup look ensures there’s no nasty hidden surprises on your big day. “Sometimes the look you want can only be achieved through trial, error and discussion,” Baillie said.

Say ‘I do’ to the venue Our experienced and dedicated professionals work with you to create your ideal wedding reception in the heart of Ipswich. To arrange a viewing and discuss your special day, contact us today. “A trial run is especially important if you’re unsure of whether to go for a minimalistic or intense glam style. “Between these two makeup looks there are several in-betweens, and a trial run ensures you avoid catastrophe on the actual day.” Prepare your skin. The key to a flawless makeup application is ensuring your skin is in the best condition possible. It is recommended to have waxing or facials done at least five days before the wedding to avoid any unexpected reactions. Baillie also suggests a moisturising lip product to keep your lips puckered nicely for your big moment.

“Whether you’re going for a natural lip or not, there is nothing romantic about dry lips,” she said. “Ensure you, or your makeup artist, has used an intensive moisturising lip product so they remain glossy for both the wedding and reception.” Prepare a touch-up kit. Preparing a little kit with some pressed power, small powder brush and a compact mirror is a great idea to touch-up your makeup before photographs. A lip gloss or lipstick is also important to keep in your kit. It’s also important to include tissues for teary moments and a cotton q-tip for any small blemishes. Let your maid-of-honour or one of your bridesmaids hold onto the kit and ensure they let you know when you need a touch-up, leaving you to focus on what’s really important on your special day.

Wedding receptions with class at Ipswich Civic Centre Weddings are memorable affairs, and when the reception is done well, your guests will be raving about the event for all the right reasons. A menu with an emphasis on fresh seasonable produce cooked perfectly will ensure your meals look as good as they taste. Ipswich Civic Centre in the CBD is situated close to Queensland’s rich regional food bowl. The inhouse chef takes full advantage, sourcing the finest produce; then transforming it in state-of-the-art kitchens into delicious cuisine. The wedding catering menu has a wide variety of selections to suit all tastes. Ensuring your guests enjoy their meal will be easy, but choosing from all the delicious options may be an enjoyable challenge! Three-course menus are a staple for all reception packages, and with the option of additional canapés how do you make the right choice? These four easy steps will help you plan the perfect menu: Budget. Your budget will determine the range of options you have and whether you include a

selection of cold and hot canapés. Setting your budget early will give you a clear indication of your choices, while allowing you to move on to the next decision - the date. Season. Consider the time of year and the impact on the menu. For example, in the height of summer the King Prawn Cocktail salad for entree, followed by Lemongrass Scented Chicken served with a Pineapple Chilli Salsa and Sticky Coconut Rice may delight, or how about Seared Tasmanian Salmon on a Chilli Tomato Risotto. To finish off, a dessert of Ricotta and Grand Marnier

Cheesecake with vibrant Blood Orange Salad. This combination would be perfect for a hot evening. In contrast, the cold winter months may call for a selection that includes an entree of Queensland Blue Pumpkin soup infused with nutmeg and served with bread, followed by an Oven Grilled Grass Fed Beef Fillet served with potatoes and vegetables or a traditional roasted Lamb Rack on Polenta. A winter dessert to accompany these choices could include Blueberry and Apple Crumble or Chocolate Mousse with rum flavoured chocolate sauce and chocolate shavings. Remember to consider the needs of your guests and talk to the chef regarding any dietary requirements ahead of schedule. The kitchen staff at the Ipswich Civic Centre are more than happy to accommodate for gluten and dairy free, plus vegetarian options. Your guests may not remember their menu section down the track but they will remember good food prepared perfectly at the Ipswich Civic Centre.

Save space with a home vertical garden Ever dreamed of having your very own kitchen garden but feel that you don’t have the space on your urban block? A vertical garden might be the answer to providing you and your family with fresh home grown produce while adding a decorative screen to an otherwise stark area. Vertical gardens can be a stylish addition to a courtyard area, compliment an outdoor kitchen or simply be a practical solution to a small yard or apartment terrace. There are a variety of options when it comes to choosing what material to create your garden from, the important concept is that the garden grows in essentially elevated pots or containers stacked above one another. This means less digging, minimal weeding and upright access to your plants. As with all vegetable gardens there are some important things to consider prior to planning your garden. If the vertical garden is required to be productive then it will require six hours of good sunshine per day, and it will need to be protected from extreme heat and frost. Additionally you need to consider plant choice, as this will be dependent upon the season and also how you expect the overall look of the garden to be. Vertical gardens can also be

used for privacy screening but remember if you are planting both sides of the wall then shade will be a consideration. As an alternative you may prefer to utilise an existing structure such as a bare wall or pergola for support and integrate trellis or hanging baskets into the design. Once you have decided on the best location then the infrastructure begins. This may be as simple as building support shelves for numerous potted herbs or containers to grow your vegetables with the shelves starting wider at the base and then more narrow at the top to allow each plant to receive appropriate sunlight. For a more modern living wall look there are products including steel frames that offer support to encourage traditional space hogs including cucumber, squash, tomato, green beans and peas to grow up instead of out. If you would like a productive arbour then pumpkins are exceptionally easy to grow and will provide a lovely growth over the summer months. Remember you will still need roots to be potted in some medium and access to water for the garden to grow. Herbs and lettuce greens are easy to integrate into a self watering panel system that gives plants a four-inch deep container for good root growth and protects the wall structure from water damage. Whatever design you choose, start small with a few easy items such as lettuce, parsley, basil thyme and oregano, kale, cherry tomatoes and chilli, then gradually build your supply. Your garden will reward you with nutritious and tasty produce year round.

Over the past 12 months the restaurant has been transformed into a remarkable licensed cafè restaurant and function centre. Italian born and raised, Mario and his family come from Napoli, the birthplace of pizza. His passion for food and family was cultivated at an early age. With such rich family heritage and a deep connection between food and contentment Mario said it was a natural progression for him to become a chef. Mario now treasures all of his family recipes and follows the traditional method of cooking everything from scratch. He said this dedication to wholesome food made from fresh and tasty produce ensured his menu gave diners an authentic Italian experience. Casa Mia make their own Mozzarella and Italian sausages, Italian Piadina breads (Tapis), pizza bases, pasta and sauces – essentially everything is made on location to order. Even the desserts including ricotta cheese cakes, tiramisu and the crowd pleasing rich chocolate mud cake are based on family recipes. Mario says the combination of relaxed ambience, alfresco dining and good food will allow more people to reconnect over the shared love of food. “We offer families and friends a place to relax and enjoy each other’s company, to talk and laugh and be happy together,” he said. “We have five function room options and can cater for groups and weddings from as few as eight people through to 400 guests,” he said. All you can eat banquets start at $25 per person and custom menus can be developed for any event or wedding. Searching for plants that not only look great in your garden, but can also withstand a scorching Queensland summer? Look no further than the North Tivoli Nursery, which boasts a large range of gorgeous Australian Native plants. Planting Australian Natives can turn your garden from a dull, lifeless environment to a buzzing wildlife retreat. Certain Australian Natives like Grevillea’s are very enticing to both nectarfeeding and insect-feeding birds looking for a source of food. Better communication during disasters Obtaining vital information in times of emergency will be made easier, with the launch of a new Emergency Management Dashboard by Ipswich City Council. The dashboard seeks to improve communication and provide residents with a reliable source of information in times of emergency, such as major traffic incidents and natural disasters. Ipswich Councillor Cheryl Bromage said the dashboard provides a single point of truth for emergency information. “One of the biggest challenges authorities face in times of emergency is making sure the community is getting the right information,” Cr Bromage said. “The Emergency Management Dashboard brings together information from various agencies

including weather warnings, road condition updates, power outage reports, river heights and emergency contacts.” As well as the dashboard, the Council has released a video campaign to show residents on how to prepare for storm season. “Too often people wait until a storm is bearing down to get prepared, but now is the best time to ensure everything is in order,” Cr Bromage said. “By preparing their home ahead of time, residents can potentially avoid significant stress and property damage during storm events.”

YOU COULD WIN! To win one of these great prizes, email your details, including daytime phone or mobile number, to win@strikepublications.com. au with the code word in the subject line. Or post entries to PO Box 124, Ipswich, Qld 4305. Entries close 20 November unless otherwise stated. Only one entry per household per contest accepted. Please note that prizes need to be collected from our office in Ipswich CBD.

TAP’D TIM RULE | PA HOTEL

Time for proper German Beer It’s that time of year again when guys and gals break out the lederhosen and dirndl. Yes, we have enjoyed Oktoberfest and it’s not Oktoberfest without beer – but not just any beer – proper German beer. Tap’d at the Prince Alfred Hotel has your German beers covered, partnering with the celebrated and well renowned German brewery Weihenstephan. First up is Weihenstepahner Original Helles Lager. A good beer takes its time. The long storage makes Weihenstephan’s yellow bright lager, “Original”, a flavourful beer enjoyed with fine poured, white foam. With a mild hoppy note and its pleasant fresh spicy taste, it goes very well with salads, poultry, stews or with a hearty snack. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill. Next is Weihenstephaner Festbier. A full rich bodied, hoppy, seasonal lager. Especially brewed for the Festbier season. This beer truly represents the Bavarian way of celebrating. Deep gold color, great mouthfeel and lots of flavour. Then we have Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier. Their golden-yellow wheat beer, with its fine-poured white foam, smells of cloves and impresses consumers with its refreshing banana flavour. It is full bodied and with a smooth yeast taste. To be enjoyed at any time, goes excellently with fish

and seafood, with spicy cheese and especially with the traditional Bavarian veal sausage. And finally is Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier Dunkel. Their dark wheat beer is impressive with its creamy white foam. A fruity-fresh sweetness and hints of mature bananas harmonize with delicious flavours of roasted malt, sparkling and full-bodied with a light caramel taste on the first sip. An excellent accompaniment from hearty meals and game to chocolate and nut desserts. All these fantastic classic German beers are poring right now at Tap’d at the Prince Alfred Hotel in Booval. Come down and try some fantastic beers brewed the traditional way. Cheers and beers! Tim

STAR Ruby Rose Multitalented and versatile, but often outrageous, Ruby Rose has shot to stardom in the US, with her recent role in ‘Orange is the New Black’ firmly cementing her place in the spotlight. Now, the instantly recognisable star is developing her own niche in Hollywood. Melbourne-born, Ruby Rose first appeared on local screens on MTV as a fresh-faced host at 21, and audiences loved her. Ruby began working in radio, developed a clothing line and even went on to host the Winter Olympics. TOWING 150 TONNES FOR CHARITY No 36 Squadron has raised vital funds for Friends with Dignity Australia by competing in an incredible display of strength – a tug of war pulling a mammoth C-17A airlifter. The Commanding Officer of No 36 Squadron, Wing Commander Steve Pesce held a base wide fundraising event during October to raise funds for ‘Friends With Dignity Australia’. Fifteen teams participated in the C-17 A Globemaster III Tug of War at RAAF Base Amberley, with competitors having to pull the 150 tonne aircraft 25 metres in the shortest possible time. The teams competing on the day were from all functional areas of the base, including contractors, Army and RAAF personnel. ‘Team Broadspectrum’ were the eventual winners, with an impressive time of 31.12 seconds. WGCDR Pesce said the overall goal of the event was to beat last year’s fundraising efforts. “This is the second year that we’ve held this event,” he said. “We raised around $5,000 last year, and we hoped to beat that this year.” This goal was met, with this year’s event raising a total of $6380 for the charity.

Friends with Dignity is a not-forprofit organisation that assists men, women and children who are victims of domestic violence. It is a local charity that undertakes work that enhances wider support provided to the White Ribbon program and campaign. CEO of Friends with Dignity Manuela Whitford said the funds

raised from the event would go directly to buy emergency clothing, housing assistance and other resources for displaced victims of domestic violence. “I’d like to thank the RAAF base personnel for coming together as a community to help us support domestic violence victims,” Ms Whitford said.

Significantly, funding provided by events such as the tug-of-war enable the Friends with Dignity organisation to buy household items that are essential to people moving into new safe homes. The practical assistance provided allows people to begin their lives afresh away from fear and potential harm.

TOWNSVILLE CELEBRATES 150 YEARS The Air Force has completed an awesome display of air power at an air show over Townsville, the final major event of a year-long celebration of the north Queensland city’s 150th anniversary. The stunning display by fast jets, transport aircraft and helicopters thrilled the more than 70,000 people who gathered along The Strand foreshore to watch the T150 Defence Air Show. Then on Sunday the Townsville air base was open to the public, with aircraft on static display.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for Air Force to provide such an event over Townsville’s foreshore,’ said Air Commodore ‘Noddy’ Sawade, Head of Air Shows for the RAAF. Among the aircraft on display were F/A-18F Super Hornets dropping flares and a C-17A Globemaster III plus C-130J Hercules, KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport and E-7A Wedgetail. Of course, the Roulettes aerobatic display team also put on a precision show. Also making an appearance was US Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon

deployed from Kadena Air Foce Base in Japan to Australia. Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the air show, hosted and coordinated by the Air Force, took over local airways during October. “These air displays are not something you see routinely in Australia,” Cr Hill said. The last time the city witnessed a major air show was in 2009. The RAAF have a long history with the Townsville air base. “The RAAF were here just prior to the break out of World War II,” Mayor Jenny Hill said.

“They are one of the reasons we have an airport.” More recently, Townsville was home to the DH-4 Caribou until it was withdrawn from service. Air Commodore Sawade, said he was pleased the show was such a hit in Townsville, with the US Air Force again taking part in the air displays and the Open Day on-base. The lineup of RAAF and Army helicopters were joined by vintage aircraft such as the Tiger Moth, Hudson, Mustang, Catalina, Neptune and the iconic Caribou.
