How is it December already? if you’re as unorganised as I am, we have included some great Christmas gift ideas for anyone and any budget - all available from local retailers. Whilst we’re on the topic of presents, we have a MEGA give away this month with fourteen books to choose from. Check it out and you might win yourself a decent read this Christmas. With school holidays fast approaching, we spoke to the Ipswich Art Gallery about their new TapeScape installation by US artist and engineer Eric Lennartson- a two story sculpture made out of 56,000sqm of packing tape! We also chatted to Australia’s funniest man, Carl Barron about his sell out performances at the Civic Centre this month, and his journey on becoming a comedian. As always, without our advertisers our magazine would not be possible so show them your support and tell them you heard about them in Lifestyle Queensland. On behalf of the team at Strike Publications, I’d like to thank our readers for your continuous support in 2016, and wish you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2017.

STAR CHAT

Barron bringing laughs to Civic Centre After making 300,000 Australians laugh on his last tour, Carl Barron is coming to Ipswich with his brand new show ‘Drinking With A Fork’. v

by Aislinn Dwyer

He said, ‘Come to this pub next Monday night.’ So I did.” That stand up gig at Sydney’s Harold Park Hotel soon changed his life, continuing to roof-tile for a short while before transitioning into comedy full time. At present, Barron has over 50 television spots to his credit, five of the top ten selling DVDs ever in Australia and the country’s highest selling stand-up comedy DVD in

What exactly makes Carl Barron so darn funny? Is it his thick rural Queensland drawl, his laidback persona or the fact he can turn ‘toilet talk’ into a side-splitting joke? Whatever it is, perhaps the combination of all of these things, just works; so much so that Barron has had audiences laughing across Australia and the globe for the past twenty-three years. The comedian comes from humble beginnings in the central Queensland town of Longreach, watching his father shear sheep before deciding to move to the Gold Coast to become a roof-tiler. Carl’s next journey took him to Sydney, where his dream of being a comedian was brought to fruition at the suggestion of fellow Australian comedian Akmal Saleh. “I’ve just always wanted to be a comedian since I was a kid,” Carl said. “I went and saw Jimeoin one night and something clicked. “I thought I could talk about those sort of things. Then I spoke to the support act in the toilet, which was Akmal [Saleh] and said, ‘How do you get into it?’ Australia’s funny man, Carl Barron to perform in Ipswich.

Australian retail history. On top of these accolades, he wrote and starred in the feelgood film Manny Lewis, a fictional story about a successful stand-up comedian who grapples with loneliness. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said Carl’s sense of observational humour aligns well with Ipswich locals and his performance would be a welcomed delight. “Carl’s brand of Aussie humour is something that everyone can relate to,” Cr Pisasale said. “Australians always find a way to laugh at themselves and Ipswich is no different – life would be boring without a sense of humour. “It’s great to have one of the nation’s leading comedians in Ipswich. “In fact, we like to laugh so much we’ve got Carl on stage for two nights.” Carl’s two sell out shows will be showing at the Ipswich Civic Centre on Monday 12 December and Tuesday 13 December respectively. To see what other events are on, call the Ipswich Civic Centre ticket office on 3810 6100 or visit their website at www. ipswichciviccentre.com.au.

COMMUNITY

Sniffing out suspicious behaviour A new neighbourhood watch program, ‘Dogs on Patrol’, aims to encourage Ipswich residents to be proactive about keeping a lookout for anything that looks suspicious in their area, that could potentially lead to crime. ‘Dogs on Patrol’ has been launched at Providence Ripley to promote neighbourhood surveillance while being out and about. The program is being implemented by the Ipswich District Crime Prevention and Ipswich Neighbourhood Watch groups to encourage residents to be the ‘eyes and ears’ of the community. With nine neighbourhood watch groups in the district, Senior Sergeant Nadine Webster says she hopes the program would also be launched in other areas of Ipswich. “We’re fortunate that Providence Ripley Valley have come on board and were prepared to be the first to launch Dogs on Patrol,” Senior Sergeant Webster said. “There are so many future developments with Providence, not only housing developments but potentially an off-leash dog park, which ties in well with the Dogs on Patrol project.

“We hope the success of this event inspires other areas of the district to launch their own Dogs on Patrol initiative.” Senior Sergeant Webster said the scheme allows the police to gain vital information from the public. “This is another way the community can take preventative measures,” SGT Webster said. “If we have something happening in a particular area, we can liaise with Neighbourhood Watch and they can inform the community.”

Pam Lobwein, of the Ipswich Direct Neighbourhood Watch said the most important aspect of Dogs on Patrol was the community looking out for one another. “We certainly don’t go out and fight the crime, but we can help”, Ms Lobwein said. “It’s about encouraging members of the community who are already out and about to act as surveillance, and report if they see anything suspicious in their community.” The Queensland Police Service urge Ipswich residents to not place themselves in danger when out on walks, but to instead carry a mobile phone. If you do see a crime being committed, call Triple Zero (000) immediately. For nonurgent situations, call Police Link on 131 444. TapeScape is the headline attraction in the Construction Site summer program at the Ipswich Art Gallery. First launched in Lennartson’s home state of Minnesota in 2011, TapeScape has been recreated in San Jose, Pittsburgh, Winnipeg, New Jersey and Dubai. “It doesn’t take much to have a lot of fun in the TapeScape,” says Eric. “The tunnels bend, curve and warp as people play, and as the structure is a bit bouncy and slippery it gives people an experience unlike anything they are used to. The installation in Ipswich has taken two weeks for Eric to create with a team of gallery staff and it is the first time a TapeScape has been showcased outside of the Northern Hemisphere. Council Arts spokesman, Councillor Charlie Pisasale said TapeScape would headline the Gallery’s summer school holiday program along with the return of popular interactive

building exhibits that form Construction Site. “Gallery Director Michael Beckmann and his team have done a huge amount of work to bring Eric and his installation to town,” Cr Pisasale said. “TapeScape is going to transform Ipswich Art Gallery like never before: it’s going to attract tens of thousands of people. “All-day entry to the interactive exhibitions is $5 per person or $15 for a family of up to five people with children under two free.” TapeScape is a welcomed addition to the other current exhibitions, Construction Site, Ball Run and the Blue Blocks activity. In these exhibits, children have the opportunity to be their own architect by building cubby houses. The giant foam blocks are there for children to build whatever they can imagine. Alternatively, their inner engineer can be released with the popular Ball Run. Children are able to create their own run using tubes and recycled materials to send a rolling ball on its way. Ipswich Art Gallery is open daily from 10am to 5pm at d’Arcy Doyle Place between Limestone and Brisbane streets, Ipswich. Construction Site featuring TapeScape is a fun, interactive art activity where your child can comfortably build and play in an air-conditioned environment, perfect for the summer school holidays. There is even a special space for children under 2 to enjoy. TapeScape is on at the Ipswich Art Gallery from Monday 5 December 2016 to Sunday 26 February 2017 (closed 24 Dec to 2 Jan inclusive).

Advance bookings may be made online at ipswichartgallery.qld.gov.au or pay at the door. Opposite page: Councillor Charlie Pisasale gets into construction mode with the kids. Below: Zephryn starts construction work. TapeScape photos courtesy Pittsburgh Children’s Gallery.

Kate Wasley succeeds as a top ‘curve’ model v

Christmas fare can be toxic to pets! Christmas is upon us and there’s so much to do. Sometimes, we can forget to take some important safety measures for our fur kids. If you are planning on time away for Christmas remember to ensure your pets are up to date with all their vaccinations, flea, tick and worming treatments. Don’t risk a substantial vet bill over the holidays, that can be avoided by providing your pet with simple preventatives. We have already seen a high number of Tick Paralysis cases this year that are avoidable at a small cost. We recommend Nexgard (dogs) and Frontline spray (cats) for ticks and fleas!

Ensure you don’t change your pets diet by giving them rich foods you enjoy over Christmas. Many of these foods can be toxic to your pet and can cause a mild intestinal upset to far more serious complications up to and including death. Serious cases are generally attributed to chocolate or a digested decoration, a new toy or packaging. If your pet/s display abnorma or unusual behaviour contact one of our clinics immediately, or in an emergency simply make your way to one of our clinics. From all the team at Ipswich Vet Group we wish you a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

For the first time since opening her doors in 1990, Lorna Jane Clarkson chose a curve model, Kate Wasley, to advertise her clothing, a move highly praised by critics and devotees alike. Despite controversial comments on ‘plus-sized’ women, Lorna Jane Clarkson has diversified her brand by including XL sizing. Clarkson was quoted earlier in the year that she would not be releasing a ‘plus-size’ range, arguing that the brand hasn’t “felt the demand for bigger sizes.” However, it appears Clarkson has had a change of mind with her Lorna Jane’s latest style guide featuring Perth-born curve model, Kate Wasley. Wasley, who represents Vivien’s Model Management is excited to be the first curve model featured by the activewear brand. “It’s a dream come true for so many reasons... mostly because I have such a strong passion for health and fitness,” Kate said. “As a personal trainer, I’ve seen so many women of all ages struggle with eating, exercise and body image - the ‘fitspo’ images floating around on the internet aren’t physically attainable for everyone and they focus on only a small percent of women. “I’m excited to show people no matter what your size, you can go to the gym, eat healthy and be fit and do what ever the hell you want; I’m excited to be a part of a movement that focuses on health and not size.” Kate, who also models for other Australian retailers like Autograph, is hoping that the Lorna Jane campaign helps inspire other companies to embrace curve sizing and diversity in their choice of models. “I truly believe that embracing all body shapes in advertising and fashion is an amazing start to combat body issues in women,” Kate said. “Women always have and always will come in their own unique

shape and it’s about time companies embrace woman for who they are and not what they think everyone should be.” The new campaign has been warmly welcomed on Lorna Jane’s social media pages. “Love this girl and that you are finally showing your clothing line on different body types - makes it much easier to see how the clothes will fit!,” commented one woman. Another wrote, “So refreshing to scroll through my Facebook and see a model I can identify with! Thank you Lorna Jane for taking this step forward.” Kate’s photoshoot and the new Lorna Jane collection is at https:// www.lornajane.com.au/styleguide.

Funding secured for Scholarship at USQ Funding for the City of Ipswich Scholarship has been secured for a further three years. Marcus Clemenkowff, the 2016 recipient said the scholarship allowed him to ease the difficulties of being a mature aged student and supporting his teenage sons. “I’m extremely passionate about being a paramedic, and to take the plunge so late in life as a mature aged student at USQ Ipswich is a daunting undertaking that I started in 2015,” Marcus said. Mayor Paul Pisasale said the scholarship was launched in 2000 to support high-achieving undergraduate students. “We have some tremendous talent living in Ipswich and this scholarship backs our best and brightest,” he said. “Council will continue to provide $5,000 a year for the City of Ipswich Scholarship through USQ for 2017, 2018 and 2019. “The scholarship is open to on-campus and online students from the Ipswich and Springfield campuses of USQ.”

Marcus says the scholarship is really important to his family. “I would definitely encourage any students who are in need of this scholarship and meet these requirements to take the time to apply as it will help you in the same way as it did for me.” For more information on the City of Ipswich Scholarship including a full selection criteria visit usq.edu.au/ scholarships/usq/city-of-ipswich Photo: Marcus Clemenkowff being presented with the 2016 City of Ipswich Scholarship by Mayor Paul Pisasale and USQ IpswichVice-Chancellor Professor Jan Thomas.

Learn to play music

The sound of people learning to play an instrument is music to the ears of Nathan Goodger, owner of Tone Town Music at Booval. Nathan has tought music for more than a decade at West Moreton Anglican college, and he offers private tuition. Nathan purchased Tone Town as home base for lessons, and to give musicians access to high quality instruments and repairs, and professional advice. Two teachers are on hand, with classes to suit all ages and experience levels. Nathan sees the positive influence music has on a child’s development. “Children are drawn to music; it helps them build motor skills, improves their complex reasoning ability while developing spatial awareness and language,” he said. “For our youth, music is a valuable way to express their inner dialogue and helps them interact positively with the world around them.” As the only music store left in Ipswich, Nathan said it was a service the area couldn’t be without. “Music is a part of the daily life of so many people,” he said. Teaching includes all aspects of guitar, banjo and ukulele, soon to include voice training and piano. “We stock Australian made Orsmby electric guitars, Matons and Cole Clarks and a full selection of brass, woodwind, amplifiers and synthesises,” he said.

Tone Town is a distributor for local Luthier, Ross Wohling, who builds Soul Guitars. They stock a range of music accessories plus print music and school instrumental books. WIN a holiday this Christmas at Riverlink Origin of Christmas gift giving Just where does the tradition of Christmas gift giving come from? Aside from the obvious Christian roots, the legend of Santa Claus and gift giving can be traced back hundreds of years to a monk named St Nicholas. It is believed that Nicholas was born sometime around 280 AD in Patara, near Myra in modernday Turkey. Much admired for his saintliness and generosity, St Nicholas became the subject of many legends. Popular belief is that after his parents died he gave away all of his inherited wealth and traveled the countryside to help the poor and sick. Over the course of many years, Nicholas’s popularity spread and he became known as the protector of children and sailors. Everybody loved Nicholas! After he passed away, they told stories of the good and kind things Nicholas had done for the community. Sailors took these

stories about Nicholas everywhere they went. Some of the stories were about his special care for children, helping and protecting them whenever danger arose. From this storytelling, more people learned about the very generous Nicholas. People wanted to be like him, and he was used as an example of how society should act - hence why he became a saint or as we know him in modern society, ‘the real Santa Claus’. This Christmas, if you want to embody the genoristy of ‘St Nick’ but are a little stuck on what to give your loved ones, don’t panic! My body is so sore. “Lots of weight training, squats, a little bit of cardio, but mostly just adding more weights into my workouts. And working out with friends to make it fun. Prince Harry has lashed out at media, saying ‘a line has been crossed’ after the constant harassment he and new girlfriend Meghan Markle have received. Kensington Palace sources said Harry feared for the safety of Markle and her family after they were “subjected to a wave of abuse”. Kensington Palace also complained of “a smear on the front page” of a British newspaper about Markle. Markle’s lawyers are engaged in a legal battle with media to prevent defamatory stories about the couple.

90s SWIMWEAR SPLASHBACK As the temperature rises, so does the resurgence of ‘nineties’ inspired swimwear. Steal these looks straight from the catwalk to get your poolside style on! The 90’s were the glory days of swimwear; think one pieces with a high cut leg, sporty style bikinis and bold prints. With plenty of styles to choose from, everyone can embrace these retro vibes this summer. Left to Right: 1: Make a splash in this multicoloured striped lycra bikini from Zimmermann. The halter neckline with a wrap around criss-cross back and spaghetti straps is giving us serious 90’s nostalgia in the best way possible. 2: Gone are the days where one-piece swimsuits are a boring alternative. This low cut back swimsuit with a mid rise leg from Sahara Ray is still just as fun as a bikini. 3: The high-cut leg in this bikini from Sahara Ray allows you to channel your inner Californian lifeguard, just in time for the Baywatch revamp in 2017.

Nick Steele, nature and landscape photographer This month, we feature in PhotoScene the work of Ipswich photographer, Nick Steele. His entry (above) was taken in Mt Walker at sunset. The 30-year-old keen photographer has always enjoyed taking pictures since he was a teenager, but fully delved into the world of photography around four years ago. Nick’s main photographic interests are in nature and landscapes, with his portfolio extending from images local to Ipswich, to surrounding areas of South East Queensland. Nick’s passion for photography has him often driving to country locations to take the perfect shot. “If I can’t get out and shoot at least once a week, I get withdrawals”, laughed Nick. “I love going for drives out into the country and taking nature, landscape or wildlife pictures. “You really can’t beat going for a drive west of Ipswich, enjoying and capturing the country landscape in and around the Scenic Rim.”

For the majority of his photography, Nick uses a Sony Alpha A600 Mirrorless Camera, playing with different lenses and filters. He has recently found an interest in astrophotography and Milky Way style shots but says, “landscapes will always be the backbone of his work”. A lot more of Nick’s photography is on his Instagram page at www. instagram.com/nicksteelephoto/

We want your pictures We would like to publish your photos of the Ipswich and West Moreton region in our magazine. Each edition will feature the best photograph received, in the opinion of our staff members, plus a profile of the photographer. Please email your photo to editor@strikepublications.com. au. We will acknowledge receipt of all entries.

Exhibition of work by Ipswich artist Deborah Firth is living proof that beautiful things can come from times of adversity. The local Ipswich artist has had her share of life’s challenges but has bounced back using art as therapy, and has opened her own exhibition in Ipswich. Dealing with health, substance abuse and marital problems, she quit drawing, believing she could no longer be an artist. Moving back to Brisbane to be with family, she picked up drawing

Deborah is holding her debut art exhibition, she calls “Life in Colour”, at Studio 7 Ipswich. The collection of paintings ranges from ones painted recently back to works created as far back as 1994. Deborah has been drawing as long as she can remember. She was accepted into a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Queensland but instead decided to travel Australia via motorbike – and as a lone rider. Running out of money, she settled in Adelaide and did a nursing exam which she passed, leading her to become a Registered Nurse. The death of a close girlfriend caused Deborah to end her nursing career and, in turn, led her on a wayward path.

again and portrayed herself naked and holding a glass of wine in front of a fireplace. At several points in her life where she felt “angry at the world’, Firth would temporarily quit her art.

However, through extensive travel and self-discovery she has learnt that she can use her art as therapy, portraying her emotions through her work. This, she says, is particularly helpful in managing the emotional side of her current job, as a palliative nurse working to ease the challenges of others. Deborah creates her art for everyone in her life, and hopes her creative works bring comfort to those who see it, as if does for her. “They bring me a lot of peace, and I know they might do the same for someone else,” she said. Deborah’s exhibition is on show now at Studio 7 on the BCC cinema level in the Ipswich Mall. Photo: Deborah Firth with two of her paintings.

Start your own small organic vegetable garden continuous source of nitrogen and other nutrients that plants need to grow.

Growing your own vegetables is fun and it’s rewarding. All you really need to get started is some decent soil and a few plants, but to be a really successful organic vegetable gardener you’ll need to understand what it takes to keep your plants healthy and vigorous. “Feed the soil” is a mantra for organic gardeners, but in chemically based agriculture, crop plants are ‘fed’ directly using synthetic fertilizers. When taken to extremes this chemical force-feeding can gradually impoverish the soil. As a result, a rich entity teeming with microorganisms, insects and other life forms can become an inert growing medium that exists mainly to anchor the plants’ roots, with little or no nutrition reaching the roots. The most useful substance for building and maintaining a healthy, well-balanced soil is organic matter. You can add organic matter by way of compost, shredded leaves, animal manures or cover crops. This improves the fertility, the structure and the tilth of the soils., providing a

Make Efficient Use of Space The location of your garden (the amount of sunlight it receives, proximity to a source of water, and protection from frost and wind) is important. Yet just as crucial for growing vegetables is making the most of your garden space. Vegetable gardens that make efficient use of growing space are much easier to care for, whether you’re talking about a few containers on the patio or a 20-by-30 metre plot in the backyard. Raised beds are a good choice for beginners because they make the garden more manageable.

Get Rid of Rows The first way to maximise space in the garden is to convert from traditional row planting to onemetre-wide raised beds. Switching to raised beds or open beds means you may actually be able to

Time to service outdoor tools Mowers and other outdoor equipment need to be serviced every 12 months to keep them in top condition. Servicings and repairs at Griffiths Mowers, Booval are comprehensive and cost effective, and are carried out by qualified mechanics at their Booval workshop. downsize the garden. By freeing up existing space, you can plant green-manure crops on the part of the garden that is not currently raising vegetables and/or rotate growing areas more easily from year to year. Or, you might find that you now have room for planting new crops: rhubarb, asparagus, berries, or flowers for cutting, in the newly available space.

in different years. With some vegetables, such as tomatoes or melons, you may also have to tie the plants gently to the support. Keep Crops Moving Crop rotation means planting the same crop in the same place only once every three years. This policy ensures that the same garden vegetables will not deplete the same nutrients year after year. It can also help foil any insect pests or disease pathogens that might be lurking in the soil after the crop is harvested. Continuous Harvest Planting crops in succession is another way to maximise growing area. Plant something new almost every week of the season, from the first cold-hardy greens and peas in late winter or early spring, to heatloving plants such as tomatoes, and peppers once the weather is settled. Succession planting means your harvest season lasts longer.

Grow Up, Not Out Trellising or a wall garden are both great ways to use the limitied space in your garden but you will still need to lend physical support to some of the vegetables, such as climbing varieties of peas and beans. Other vegetables that are commonly trellised include vining crops, such as cucumbers and tomatoes. The fence surrounding your garden may well do double-duty as a trellis, so long as the crops grown on the fence can be rotated

GIve It a Go Remember, starting a vegetable garden is simple: start with good soil, use plenty of organic matter, and rotate your crops every couple of years.

Since opening in December last year, the LONEHSTAR Ribhouse restaurant has brought the flavours of Texas to the heart of Orion Springfield Central, delighting the tastebuds of customers from Springfield, Ipswich and beyond. Franchise owner Dearne Aslander believes the restaurant’s service quality and Texan-style hospitality ensures guaranteed repeat business. “We’re one of the few full-service restaurants in the Springfield region,” Dearne said. “Where else in Springfield can you sit down, relax and let the waiters take care of it all? “Our service quality is a real stand-out and our friendly wait staff often receive compliments from our customers.” While the Ribhouse is, of course, famous for their slow cooked ribs, the restaurant caters to everyone – with milder options to ‘hot as hell’ flavours, Ol’ Dave’s famous burgers, mouthwatering steaks, schnitzels, onion rings.. you name it, and they probably have it. Remember to save some room after dinner though, because their dessert range is equally impressive . Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary, birthday, graduation or simply after a filling and delicious meal, LONEHSTAR Ribhouse Springfield is the place to go. ‘Fingerstyle’ Revolution comes to Studio 188 Queensland guitarist, Van Larkins is set to wow Ipswich audiences at Studio 188 at the ‘Top of Town’ location. Pairing up with Italian virtuoso, Andrea Valeri, Larkins will showcase ground-breaking techniques and a depth of composition unheard of on Friday, 16 December. Van Larkins is celebrating the Fingerstyle Concert Series with the release of ‘Outback Storm’, an iconically Antipodean song from his forthcoming album, Cinder Moon. “I wanted to create something uniquely Australian, so I imagined a tropical storm emerging over the red plains of Australia...wild and unforgiving,” Larkins said. Surprising to most, Van Larkins doesn’t sing, he doesn’t play drums, and there’s no loop pedal. Instead, he defies the eye when playing his energetic melodies, harmonies, percussion and bass with just a humble acoustic guitar. After all, why use all of that when he can make the one musical instrument do it all?

Transforming what we traditionally consider a classical guitar style with musical influences like electronic, psych trance and 70’s funk, it’s no surprise that Larkins is spearheading this musical revolution. “I experiment and use every possible part of my acoustic guitar to make music. It could be bending the neck to make that ‘wah wah’ sound or pushing my elbow on the back to create delay, while wiggling the capo for a whammy clav effect,” Larkins said. “It’s just so much fun to see what I can do next.” Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe, a 25 year old guitar prodigy, Valeri, is very much the talk of the guitar world with his ever-evolving, experimental fingerstyle guitar, making this duo a match made in musical heaven, and a must-see this December at Studio 188. Listen to Larkins’ music at vanlarkins.com/music, and book tickets for his and Valeri’s Studio 188 performance at psmusicgroup. oztix.com.au.

TAP’D TIM RULE | PA HOTEL

Global beer time at Tap’d The beauty of beer is that it spans the entire globe, encompassing a multitude of countries and cultures. The guys at Tap’d at the Prince Alfred Hotel are trying to bring a taste of this global beer diversity to Ipswich. Recently tapped at Tap’d is the signature beer from the team at Barecelona Beer Co in Spain. Barcelona Beer is an American-style Pale Ale or APA for short. Like a sunny day in Spain’s most artistic city, this APA is indelibly sweet on the nose, crammed with hopheaded notes of toffee and peach that mellow out on the palate. This brew is balanced and drinkable whatever the weather may be! Another great international beer to be tapped at Tap’d is Tuatara Conehead Green-Hopped IPA from Tuatara Brewing in New Zealand. You can definitely taste the freshness and the hoppy aroma, which lasts and lasts. It’s not overly hopped so it’s pleasant to drink. It pours a golden/amber colour and hits you immediately with tropical

fruits, I got a nice hit of mango and passionfruit, and it’s well balanced with crystal and light crystal malts, a truly beautiful IPA. Last, but definitely not least, in the latest international additions to Tap’d’s extensive tap list is Tiny Rebel’s Cwtch Welsh Red Ale. Cwtch (which rhymes with Butch) was recently voted Champion Beer of Britain, beating 1000s of other beers. This beer is an untraditional Welsh red ale - a perfect blend of six caramelly malts and three citrussy American hops. It isn’t your average bitter - the hops do more to this deep amber coloured beer than just provide bite. Any old hop can do that! Tiny Rebel have selected some of the most aromatic and tangy hops to give this red ale a fresh hit that complements the caramel flavours of the malts that gives this beer its colour. Model, television host, and all-round #girlboss Bec Judd continues to shine as a style icon in the Australian fashion landscape. The former speech pathologist manages to look flawless just two months after delivering identical twin boys, often showcasing her on-trend styling on her Instagram and blog. The 33 year old fashionista was first thrust into the spotlight with her controversial outfit choice to the 2004 Brownlow Medal Awards – a deep red, slashed-to-the-navel and up-to-the-thigh frock. Undergoing a truly remarkable fashion evolution. Judd’s success has silenced fashion and media critics alike. Nowadays, the wife of ex-footballer Chris Judd maintains perfectly tousled hair and a primped makeup look, to match her modish designer wardrobe. DEFENCE

Defence unites against domestic violence Defence Force units nationally are united in their resolve to take an antidomestic-violence stance and demonstrate that violence against women is not acceptable human behaviour, and needs to be stopped. As part of a defensive measures campaign on White Ribbon Day (November 25), females of Combat Support Group, which has its headquarters at RAAF Base Amberley, took part in a self defence workshop where they learnt the techniques of Krav Maga, a self defence system originating from the Israeli Defence Force. While Krav Maga encourages all students, not just females, to avoid confrontation, sometimes this is not possible. These women were taught specialised Krav Maga techniques that will give them confidence and empower them if they encounter situations where they are threatened in their domestic life, on exercise or deployed - and don't have any other recourse than to defend themselves against attack. While 'White Ribbon' is a male lead organisation against violence towards women, the HQCSG White

Ribbon Committee is made up of male and female members. They organised this event under the auspices of White Ribbon, with the clear aim of reducing and eventually ending all domestic violence. The Committee will be working on the development

of similar workshops open to all genders in the future. The Krav Maga workshop was part of a Defence-wide program nationally across all Services and the Department of Defence to show support for anti-domestic violence measures.

LAST FLIGHT OF NO 6 SQUADRON SUPER HORNETS Six F/A-18F Super Hornets and their crews from one of the Air Force’s top fighter squadrons have made their final flight together, as the squadron begins transition to the EA-18G ‘Growler’ Airborne Electronic Warfare aircraft. So, for a short time at least, the famous ‘Boomerang’ tail flash of 6 Squadron will not be seen on Super Hornets in the skies over Ipswich. The squadron is now training in the United States to fly the ‘Growler’ and will begin ferrying them home to Amberley early 2017. Their Super Hornets will transfer to 1 Squadron at Amberley as part of the Air Force’s transition plan. The farewell flight took the six Super Hornet jets south from Amberley towards the Evans Head weapons range, before flying at low level along the coast in the vicinity of Coolangatta, Brisbane and the

Sunshine Coast to Double Island, before returning to Amberley in formation and performing the famous ‘Initial and Pitch’ fighter approach, before landing. Pilots and Air Combat Officers from Amberley are already learning to operate the Growler Electronic Warfare (EW) jets with the US Navy, at Whidbey Island in Washington State and some of the first crews to graduate are now working as instructors at the base. The RAAF is buying twelve Growlers, which are highly modified Super Hornet airframes, and when they are in full operational service

early next decade, Australia will have the only tactical Airborne Electronic Attack Capability in the world outside the US. In RAAF service it will work with other Australian Defence Force assets, such as the Navy’s new Air Warfare Destroyers and Army’s combat units to identify, jam and if necessary, destroy enemy radar and communications systems. It is said that they are able to jam mobile telephone signals,

to prevent remote detonation of Improvised Explosive Devices, such as those used by the Taliban in Afghanistan and Daesh in Iraq and Syria. “Our team in the United States is ever expanding with multiple aircrew and maintenance technicians now training with the US Navy,” said Air Commodore Mike Kitcher, Director General of Capability Planning at Air Force Headquarters in Canberra.

All 12 Growlers and squadron personnel will be at Amberley by mid-2017 ready for operational development workup. “We are on track to declare an Initial Operational Capability (IOC) as planned in mid 2018,” said Air Commodore Kitcher. No 6 Squadron was formed in the United Kingdom during World War I and later served with distinction as a bomber squadron in New Guinea during World War II, flying Lockheed Hudsons. Post-war, 6 Squadron re-equipped with the Avro Lincoln heavy bomber at Amberley and has been based in south-east Queensland ever since. The squadron entered the jet age with the introduction of the Australian-built Canberra bomber and has subsequently flown the McDonnell F-4E Phantom and the

F-111C, before converting to the Super Hornet in 2011. Clockwise from top: Aircrews walk for their final flight in the Super Hornet at RAAF Amberley.
