The merger has allowed the team to expand their commercial law department while still enabling the partners to focus on their particular areas of expertise. Directors Michael Kelly, David Love, Bill Leather and Joshua Sheaffe are committed to offering the services and depth of expertise of a large firm, without compromising on the personalised service traditionally paired with smaller firms. “At Fallu McMillan customer service is paramount,” he said. “We strive to build an excellent rapport with clients, we meet regularly and stay in contact before, during and after proceedings,” he said. “In concert with industry trends, our clients have excellent access to the person representing them. Not only are we exceptionally capable and competent we also answer questions quickly, make ourselves available, and ensure we are approachable - and we allocate more times in our diaries to see clients.” “Our client satisfaction policy ensures prospective clients are always greeted with smiles, with better access to a practitioner or someone who can assist, and with minimal waiting times for calls. Novels, e-Books and vampire stories International best selling author Justin Cronin, in town for the Brisbane Writers’ Festival, launched the final book in his Passage Trilogy - The City of Mirrors. He has strong views on genre, planning and the survival of the novel as literary piece. According to Justin, “There are two types of novels, those that take you out of your life and entertain you, and you are happy, then there are novels that make you think more introspectively about who we are as individuals, and these novels leave you changed. A great novel does both, and as a writer it’s what I strive to achieve.” In a world in which publishing has transitioned to the electronic medium, Cronin has created a body of work that mimics traditionally structured literature but filled with a rich tapestry of “action packed, vampire thriller, post apocalyptic themes. Harvard graduate and former English professor, his latest instalment closes the door on the mammoth 900,000-word series . “In a literary sense the novel will always exist because the structure mimics that of a human lifetime,” Justin said. “It has a start, a beginning and an end. It’s what we relate to.
“I like hard copy printed books, especially for novels that have been pivotal reads for me. I think e-books have their place; readers can access publications immediately, plus there are other benefits. I may be in my fifties but I swear I have 80-year-old eyeballs so the ability to instantly up the font size is great at three am in the morning.” In the wake of the recent popularity of vampire fiction Justin said that his novel blurs genre boundaries and explores a post apocalyptic world in which vampires are created in labs. The world we know no longer exists; humanity is scrambling to survive. “The vampire mythology is fascinating, as there is so much scope and room to move within the mythology, but I developed this because I needed to have a ‘boogie man’ in my novel that readers could relate to,” Justin said. “I think the story will be relevant to generations to come because at its core it’s really about us as the
FAMILY LAW
human species. The plot may centre around an apocalyptic world and move forward 100 years but the characters have so much depth so people will be able to relate on some level,” The idea for the Passage Trilogy originated more than a decade ago during conversations with Justin’s daughter. She challenged him to write a story about a girl who saves the world, three months on and numerous conversations later the concept for Amy was developed. Justin assures readers that this book marks a definite finale in Amy’s world and gives readers closure. “Structure is important in good literature and I’m meticulous about it, he said. “It means you know where you are going and ensures your readers don’t get lost along the way. So yes because of the structure the ending wasn’t a surprise to me as I knew where the characters were heading. I knew the final scene.”

“We run a play-based learning program in which activities are child led, but structured. Activities include craft, outdoor play, gardening and community involvement.” The centre is open Monday- Friday 6.30am to 6.30pm. Parents may contact the centre on 3812 1661.
Owner Jon Vermeer said battery operated lines would suit residents of new estates being built in the area such as Eco-Ripley. “People with smaller yards are now looking for a simple but effective solution to their mowing and garden maintenance needs,” he said. “Previously, we saw the need for large, high powered equipment dominating our product lines but
now, since the area has become more urban with smaller blocks, people are seeking a product that does the same job but is more user friendly.” “These products are easier to start and turn on at the touch of a button and there’s no need to mix fuel. They are quiet and also with no emissions they are friendlier to our local environment.” Jon said the range included professional grade electric equipment, and he said an economically priced lighter line will be launched soon. There are three battery solutions for powering the equipment: the battery can be placed into the equipment, the user can wear a battery belt connected via a cord, and for the professional larger jobs there’s an additional battery backpack that offers up to four times the run time. “The battery backpack is excellent for tradesmen working in noise sensitive areas or in confined spaces, and this allows them to get the job done without the interruption of a battery change,” Jon said. “The battery belt pack also allows domestic users to reduce the weight in their hands making the equipment more versatile and more user friendly.”
Jon said customers will be pleased with the durability of the tools. “You won’t find these tools returning to the workshop in a hurry because despite their advanced technology they are hard working, built tough and have the same high level quality, Stihl customers have come to expect.” Click and collect will soon be offered, which allows customers to order online and then pick up in store. This means customers can order in the convenience of their own home. In addition, a 12-month interest free payment plan will also be introduced soon. With new items being added to the line this month now is the time to visit Ipswich Mower and Saw Service at 466 Warwick Road Yamanto or online at www. ipswichmowers.com.au.

Cupcakes anyone? Mumma D’s famous gourmet cupcakes, renowned as tasty treats, will soon take up permanent residence in Ipswich City Square. Janine Daly, baker of the tasty cupcakes, is a regular feature of the ever growing monthly Food Trucks in the Mall event. Her creations, which include vegan and gluten free options, are devoured on-mass at the food truck events, with more than 950 cupcakes sold at the last event. Top of the list in the gourmet range is Salted Caramel, with it’s oozy caramel centre. The Snickers Cupcake is also a firm favourite, which includes a puree chocolate bar. Then there’s the famous Choc Mint Peppermint Cupcake with it’s rich chocolate centre and peppermint infused icing. All these mouthwatering creations go faster than Janine can get them on plates. Janine said opening for business in the Mall will be the “realisation of a dream” and that the CBD location was the perfect fit for her business she started five years ago in the family kitchen.
“Ipswich still has a strong sense of community, and as a business with an ethos built on old fashioned values I admire the fact that my customers are friendly, respectful and family based,” Janine said. Mother of eight children, Janine knows all about cooking for a crowd. She said the business started when her youngest child began school and her husband suggested she start selling her creations. “It just took off, and now with the expansion into a permanent premise my son Duccari can now help out in store.” Janine remembers her first weeks of business and the two dozen muffins she sold door to door to local business. Today the list of services includes high tea, custom wedding cakes and more than 1000 plus gourmet cupcakes to private events. The new store is in the Ipswich City Mall. Phone 0406 531 363.

HOME & LIVING
OPEN PLAN YOUR HOUSE Definition of the Open Plan house: take your open space and redefine your living areas to ensure home trends don’t leave you out in the air. Australian home owners have had a long relationship with open plan living but as trends move forward 2017 is set to be a year of definition, when interiors transition to a more defined allocated sense of life and areas have a set purpose again. Defined living spaces are in resurgence because combining kitchen, living, dining and even study areas into the same shared space is really impractical, but there are ways to reintroduce purpose and privacy to a space. While an entire structural change may be an expensive undertaking,
you don’t necessarily need to take such drastic measures. Multipurpose living spaces can be defined by colour, furniture and lighting, the zones created mimicking those of traditional living spaces without disturbing airflow or harmony of design. An addition of a floor rug or furniture artfully arranged to create defined areas can be the most
effective way to create zones. Define an area with a double sided sideboard or separate the kitchen from the dining area with a moveable island bench. By utilising finishes that contrast each other, such as timber for the dining area and modern materials for the kitchen efficiently, defines one area is for preparation and the other for consumption. Soft fabric lounges and colour coding in the television area can also denote spacial allocation. For shared bedrooms try mimicking furniture. The duplicity of two identical beds, wardrobes and desks denotes two spaces. For spacious main bedrooms a tall bedhead paired with a luxurious ensemble mattress can work as a perfect space divider separating living and sleeping areas.
Storage furniture can also be a classy way to separate locations, and it gives you an opportunity to show interesting items - your favourite book or family photos.

Is pet grooming important? The easy answer is; yes! Dermatology is the number one reason sick pets end up coming in to see vets. Factors like fleas, allergies and infections play their role but general skin and coat care is also vitally important. A poorly maintained coat can make it difficult to control fleas, can increase the risk of bacterial or fungal-based infections and generally make your pet feel unhappy. A regular bath and brush at home can make a world of difference. It is important to
choose the right shampoo/ conditioner combination and brush for your pet. If you are unsure, just ask us. For those times when your four-legged friend needs some professional attention, we’re here to help. Shelli is our professional groomer and is always happy to offer help and advice. She can also offer your pet a variety of ‘Pamper Packages’ that could include a full clip, hydrobath and blow dry, nail trim and even anal gland check. Call us for details.
Flora and fauna art at Community Gallery Two local artist are exploring flora and fauna in their joint exhibition ‘Inception’ to be held this month at the Ipswich Community Gallery in Darcy Doyle Place. Members of the Ipswich Arts Society, Kate Douglas and Dario Zanesco are exhibiting work with a complementary style, depicting local flora and international fauna. The exhibition showcases more than 12 months of work by the two artists. More than 30 pieces will be on show. Kate has spent the last four years exhibiting her work and said she gained inspiration wandering the banks of the Bremer River. The result is a body of work which depicts “gnarled old trees, gentle riverscapes and flora studies.” Kate’s work is a mixture of acrylic painting and drawing, all demonstrating her fondness for high contrast and interesting composition. She said the paintings are dual purpose, as the subject matter focuses on environmental weeds. Despite their immense beauty she wanted to place these prevalent plants in the spotlight in a bid to raise awareness. “I’m passionate about our waterways and although noxious weeds can be beautiful this is a juxtaposition to the dire impact they have on biodiversity”
“As standalone pieces they depict beautiful scenes of our local waterways but together they paint the picture of an environmental issue that needs to be addressed.” Unlike Kate, Dario’s paintings allow him to analyse animals from all over the world, and he has spent hundreds of hours with his headspace immersed in far off places. His work depicts mainly birds and some African wildlife. Dario said his work also allows him to study animals of interest. “I’ve seen many animals in books, heard stories about, and some I haven’t seen much off at all. I’ve decided to paint them in a bid to explore them a little bit more,” he said “I consider my artistic style to be representational and I try to be as realistic as I can with a desire to really focus on the details.” “Some of the natural features are from my imagination, but if it looks too illustrative I find myself redoing it and getting more reference photographs.” The exhibition opens Friday October 14 and will run until Tuesday October 18 from 10am - 4pm. The Ipswich Community Gallery is in Darcy Doyle Place, corner of Limestone and Nicholas Streets. Photo: Kate Douglas and Dario Zanesco with some of their art to be exhibited.

Halloween is on October 31st, the last day of the Celtic calendar. Originally a pagan holiday honouring the dead, it used to be known as All Hallows Eve and dates back over 2000 years. Saturday 29th celebrations at Riverlink are far from a spooky affair. The day will include prizes drawn every hour from 10am – 5pm, activities for the kids and carved pumpkin competitions. Prizes range from headphones to a microwave, a washing machine and a fridge. To top it off, a 55” TV will be the major prize. Shoppers just need to spend a total of $30 in specialty stores or $60 in major stores for an entry. Receipts can be taken to either the booth near Best & Less or to the Centre Management Office. Each hour the entry barrel will be cleared and that hour’s prize-

Increased focus in classrooms on students’ health and wellbeing A curriculum that also includes teaching personal and social capabilities now has increased focus in the classroom, to equip students with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and strategies to understand and manage themselves and their relationships. Teachers aim to foster these respectful relationships by providing opportunities for students to build on their strengths, use preferred learning styles, work cooperatively in groups and have the opportunity to negotiate the way they learn. Schools that improve students’ health and wellbeing give students a sense of self-worth, self-awareness and personal identity that enables them to manage their emotional, mental, spiritual and physical wellbeing, with a sense of hope and optimism about their lives and the future. This also helps students prepare for their future life roles as family, community and workforce members’ By building the foundations for wellbeing and lifelong learning schools give students the skills to excel in life, both academically and socially.

Bremer State High School has a proud tradition of providing a challenging, diverse and positive education. Based at its location since 2011, and with just under 2000 students, the school offers a wide-ranging curriculum combined with state of the art facilities. Executive Principal, Kay Louwrens says the school environment is friendly, supportive and wellordered, with an emphasis on time-honoured values. “Bremer State High School prides itself on working with students, parents and carers along with the school community to deliver a first class education.” Principal Louwrens said the schools supports students right through their years at Bremer: those who are in academic excellence programs along with students who need additional support in numeracy and literacy so across the entire range. Ms Louwrens said care and attention was taken in subject selections to ensure that students choose subjects that suit their needs their capabilities and their aspirations. “We monitor and track every senior student in the senior classes. We work with them as individuals and determine how they are going, then we adjust programs, increase support or provide extension programs depending on each student’s needs”, she said.

“Some students choose subjects that go into a hands-on pathway towards learning a trade while other students who want to continue on to tertiary studies will have options that suit that particular pathway. Whatever their choices we have the facilities and the staff to help them excel.” School facilities include a 320 seat auditorium, sprung dance floors for performances, science labs, a cutting edge manual arts and industrial design facilities. Students learn skills with industrial equipment under the tuition of industry experts and an arts program where teachers are practising artisans. Ms Louwrens is conscious of the fact that students of today are potentially the leaders of tomorrow. “We have partnerships with universities, with the business community and mentors from local Ipswich business paired with our senior students, so they are getting the connection with the community we want them to contribute to,” she said. We work extensively on our pride values. It’s very important right across the school. More than just life skills, it’s also about problem solving, the ability to collaborate with others in a team environment, using initiative, entrepreneurialship, work ethic, etc. It’s all those things that are important if you want to contribute to society.”

‘The Hub’ at St Peters From little things big things grow, was the sentiment expressed by those who gathered to celebrate the official opening of The Hub, Performing Arts Building and Modular Classroom Flying Start Project at St Peters in Springfield. The project received $437,000 funding from the State Government Block Grant Authority. Since The Hub opened in August it has added much welcomed facilities to the expanding St Peters Campus. A library, a new classroom to house increased student numbers plus dedicated music classrooms and a performance area are all welcome editions to the school. Principal Ms Jill Lange-Mohr said the 400 square metre area jointly houses the library and the chapel where students are encouraged to mingle, study and learn. “The project is a welcome addition to our campus and it works beautifully in catering for a wide range of activities for our Prep through to Year 12 students,” Ms Lange-Mohr said. Reverend Paul Smith, Bishop of the Lutheran Church of Australia voiced the lyrics
from the iconic Paul Kelly song in his address and said the project was an example of how a small but passionate idea can evolve into a positive reality. “St Peters is growing, and as it grows its helping people grow,” Bishop Smith said. The space has been well received by students with year six student Jemima Wilksch stating that the location is warm and inviting. “Once our library was just a room with books and now we really have a space to enjoy,” Jemima said. “My friends and I feel so comfortable using this area and it’s a place we visit everyday,” she said. The Homestay Program is overseen by Education Queensland International, which operates in 75 Queensland Government Schools. Springfield Central State High International Student Program Coordinator, Kelly Macklin said the program has positive outcomes including encouraging students to understand cultural differences and building lifelong friendships. COMMUNITY
Ipswich update - Mayor Paul Pisasale The face of Ipswich and the region is in transition, and with CBDs development on the not to distant horizon Mayor Paul Pisasale says the city’s demographics, jobs and community consultation are important issues to be planned and actioned. Ipswich is identified as one of the world’s Top 7 intelligent cities, it is the state’s fastest growing city, it boasts the youngest average age demographic (32 years), and the region is home to two Australian firsts: the Dusit Thani $450 million resort development at Springfield and the entreprenaural hub that is Fire Station 101. But in contrast the Ipswich CBD is slated in media reports as “a ghost town.” Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale says that the CBD redevelopment project, currently underway in its community consultation stage, is key to increasing pride in Ipswich and breathing new life into the CBD. Plans including shifting the library and council to the CBD, opening the Ipswich Mall to the river by redeveloping the riverside end of the CBD to “embrace the river “ and making better use of the Bradfield bridge connection to Riverlink. “We have a plan for the CBD and an investor, and that’s a model that will work, and it’s going to lead the rest of the country,” he said.
The mayor said a community in which Council, business and residents work together for positive outcomes encourages jobs, economic growth and liveability. “I want Ipswich to be known not only for its economic development but also as a city of compassion and care, where neighbours help neighbours, where titles don’t matter, and everyone has a responsibility to make things the best they can be,” he said. “Once we had a city that was the
punching bag for everybody, a city that if anyone wanted to put a prison or a housing commission estate they’d put it in Ipswich, but we won’t cop that any more. “Our community lacked balance, but now we have a balance between the professionals, the private sector, investors along with the people who are not travelling so well in life, so it’s a great city because the well off can help those in need.” The Mayor said building pride in the city, by improving infrastructure
and creating jobs, is critical to bridging the demographic divide, and this has been critical to encouraging the recent influx of young families into the area. Cr Pisasale said many professionals are moving to Ipswich to take advantage of opportunities in the technology sphere and other areas of business plus Defence at RAAF Base Amberley. But he says it’s important to understand that all members of the community need to contribute to the future of Ipswich. “It doesn’t matter what you earn, everyone can take pride in the city, and still help others,” he said. “We need to have the right balance of professionals, trades people, and also attract the companies to provide jobs for people of all skills.” “We need to understand the difference between unemployable and unemployed people. There are people who are not in a position to work due to their skillsets but we need to create jobs for them so they can contribute positively to the future of our great city.”

Construction begins on $450m luxury resort at Brookwater Golf Club With the first sod turned to begin construction of the $450 million Dusit Thani Brookwater Golf Resort and Spa, so begins a 5-Star resort development, the largest single foreign investment in an Australian resort history. With Stage 1 set to be completed in the coming months, when all stages are completed the 13 hectare facility will sleep 1500 people and provide 520 apartments. It will be the area’s largest conference centre, accommodate six private clubs and retail outlets - all adjacent to the Greg Norman designed Brookwater golf course. Chairman of Springfield Land Corporation, Maha Sinnathamby, said the addition of a world class international resort is proof that the region has unlimited possibilities, and with only 20 per cent of Springfield developed, “you haven’t seen anything yet.” He said that recent projects in Springfield accounted for $550 million in investments, including expansion of Orion Shopping Centre, Mater Hospital, Orion Lagoon, and 700 new homes. “Today is a momentous day and this country, this state and this region should be so proud, “ he said. “Springfield is a multibillion dollar addition to our economy, and the resort is benefiting the area both economically and socially, and it has created more than 500 jobs.” The investment, which is the first foreign investment in an international hotel on Australian soil in more than 25 years has Mayor Paul Pisasale confident that Springfield and the whole Ipswich
region will experience a marked increase in tourism and an economic boost on an unrecendented scale. “The project is perfectly positioned between three airports and offers a world class facility,” he said. “The facilities will be open to the public giving our residents the opportunity to experience 5-Star luxury firsthand.” Bob Sharpless, Deputy Chairman, said he was pleased they had ‘stuck to their guns’ and held out for a 5-Star luxury complex. “With $20 million invested so far and three years of planning we have just scratched the surface of this project ,” he said. Brookwater Resorts Investments CEO Richard Turner said, “It’s been a journey, one that has required a unique pairing of partnerships,” “We’ve been fortunate that Ipswich City Council have shared our vision.” “It’s been an arduous 18 months of consultation and we have received great technical support from the Council and their planning staff. “Brookwater is the Jewel in the crown and is expected to draw an extra 1.8million people to the area annually.” Photo (L-R): Springfield Land Corporation’s Deputy Chairman Bob Sharpless and Chairman Maha Sinnathamby with Brookwater Resorts Investments CEO Richard Turner and Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale.

Gail Bryant wins Enviroplan Best Photography award Winners of the 2016 Enviroplan Photographic Competition have been announced, with local Karalee woman Gail Bryant taking top honours in the overall adult section of the competition. More than one thousand photos were entered by hundreds of photographers from across region in categories, which included water, macro and nature. According to co-judge, James Doyle the wining entry’s colourful macro capture of a bee in flight feeding on purple flowers was chosen because of overall good composition, nice use of colour and good lighting. He said the bees extended proboscis ready to feed added intrigue and mystery to the photo. “I liken it to a spaceship coming in to land with its gear down and ready,” he said. “Photos such as this illustrate a moment in nature that we may not always be privy to and gives us a close up insight into the subject’s habits.” Gail was overwhelmed by the accolade and said that it was a great boost in confidence for her as a photographer who is passionate about the environment and her home region. “I do like wildlife in all it’s

forms and I’d done research on the blue banded bee and its attraction to the colour purple, so I was excited when the flowers bloomed in the Nerima Gardens.” she said. “I took my macro lens, found a spot and waited for bees to turn up.” Both Gail and James agree the most important aspect of wildlife photography is to promote awareness of nature and encourage conservation. “I want people to be inspired by my images and encouraged to investigate more about the animals and plants that call this area home,” said Gail. The event was sponsored by Lifestyle Queensland Magazine, Fergies Print and Mail and Cameraland at Brassall. TOP JOCKEY - TEGAN HARRISON The Melbourne Cup may be the race that stops the nation but for top jockey Tegan Harrison it’s business as usual for one of Brisbane’s top riders. Tegan rides regularly at the Ipswich Turf Club and led the 2015/2016 Ipswich Jockey Premiership through the entire season. She almost became the first woman to hold the title before being ‘pipped at the post’ on the last race of the season’s final meet. With 4430 starts to date - 686 of these raced at Ipswich - and more than $12 million in total prize money earned for owners, Tegan says that the industry gives her the capacity to make a living doing something she loves. “I’m a competitive person and I’m working with horses, which I love and I get paid to do it,” Tegan said. “Yes, it’s hard work and takes dedication but it’s something I’m very passionate about. “It’s one of the only horse sports where sometimes you meet the horse the first time you race and although they are all different with quirks and personalities the key is to make a connection straight away.” Increased scrutiny of female jockeys from outside the sport

has been the offshoot of Michelle Payne’s momentous Melbourne Cup wins last year but for Tegan her daily outlook hasn’t changed. “Most days I’m up and on the road to Brisbane at 3am where I ride track work for various trainers, then it’s on to do barrier jump outs, and we finish around noon,” she said. “It’s one of those jobs where you never know where you will be from week to week but normally it’s four days of racing each week, and we can travel anywhere on the east coast for a significant meet.” Tegan said that even though she

was unsure of her location for Melbourne Cup she was certain of her wardrobe - jockey silks. “As a jockey there is a certain level of respect and an expectation that you need to turn up to the races well presented as you do in any job.” “There’s no undue pressure on female jockies but racing takes pride in fashion so I guess as a sports person in racing you want to also take a little pride in that too.” Tegan created history when she raced with fellow female jockeys Kathy O’Hara and Winona Costing earlier this year at Sydneys Randwick track, which was the largest group of female jockeys to ride in a Group 1 event.
She said women jockeys had been a steady fixture in racing since the late 1980s but the representation although acknowledged within the sport wasn’t supported by public perception. “Since Michelle’s win it’s more recognised in the public that there are female jockeys out there doing a good job, and it has definitely had a positive impact on the profile of female riders”. “There’s more of us girls racing today than ever and that trend continues to be on the up.”

This year’s Ipswich Fashion Festival exceeded expectations, with a mix of great entertainment led by the fabulous Suzie G (pictured left) and glorious fashion by local, national and international designers. Sue Flewell-Smith, winner of the Aspire Fashion Award (right) was inducted into the newly created Fashion Hall of Fame, and Vanessa Hoe of the ‘When Freddie Met Lilly’ collection returned as one of the judges following a highly successful show in New York City. The irrepressible Leigh Buchanan also judged the fashion but stole the show with his sharp-tongued hilarious commentary that had the audience in stitches. Talk about a one-man show. Of course, no fashion event would be complete without Pam Tamblyn who is always the consumate MC and fashion guru. A truly classy event in Ipswich.

Stop snoring for a better sleep Noisy snoring can steal more than your sleep, according to Suzie Holmes from Raceview Complete Denture Clinic. Snoring left untreated can be lethal. Suzie Holmes is a fully qualified fitter of the Freedom MRD Snore Guard. She said snoring leading to Sleep Apnoea is a complex issue, but once correctly diagnosed can be treated effectively. “When you snore there’s a moment when you stop breathing, and this paired with other issues means you can slip away in your sleep,” she said. This is worse case scenario but most snorers complain of tiredness and anxiety at the very least. “The Snore Guard reduces your snoring, significantly reducing the stress on both your lungs and heart,” Suzie said. “Getting a full night’s sleep should be a necessity, as sleep is most beneficial to our overall health.
With Snore Guard, uninterrupted sleep is bliss.” The guard lasts up to eight years and is produced in the same way as a denture and works by opening the airways making it easier for you to breath uninterrupted. Suzie said sleep patterns can easily be assessed. It’s as simple as booking a consultation following a referral from your GP. For appointments phone 3294 1449.

Rodenbach Beer Beer lovers rejoice! Rodenbach has made it to Ipswich! For the nonbeer-nerds out there, Rodenbach is a beer brand that is synonymous with sophistication, quality and beautiful taste. The Rodenbach Brewery in Belgiumwas founded by Pedro Rodenbach and his wife, Regina Wauterss back in 1836. Today, Rodenbach brew a wide selection of specialty beers. Their signature product, Rodenbach, the authentic Belgian sour ale, undergoes two fermentation stages to acquire a mildly sour taste. The first stage of fermentation is unique: top-fermenting yeasts work together with lactic acid bacteria. However, a Rodenbach will only acquire its characteristic fruity bouquet after maturating in oak foeders. The brewery’s cooper crafts each barrel in the same way it has been done since 1821. Hops are used in the brewing process, but only to provide a stable head of froth, never dominating the taste. Rodenbach contains various coloured malts, ground maize for
the soft, silky feeling and Belgian hops from Poperinge. Rodenbach is crafted with one-quarter old, mature beer and three-quarters young beer. Tradition decrees that prawns should be served with a sweetand-sour Rodenbach. The brewer describes the taste of his beer as ‘three-dimensional’: mildly sour, full-mouthed and dry. Why is this beer so well suited to seafood and crustaceans? Seafood has a high protein content. The acids in the beer help to dissolve these proteins. The classic Rodenbach (and its sister Rodenbach Rosso) is pouring right now at Tap’d at the Prince Alfred Hotel in Booval, as well as being available to take home from Harry Browns. Enjoy a glass of Rodenbach with Tap’d’s scrumptious Prawn Linguine. Stocks are very limited and demand is high so get in quick. Cheers and beers! Tim

‘Heron’ squadron excels in Afghanistan For almost five years the Heron remotely piloted aircraft flew in the skies over Afghanistan collecting intelligence that potentially saved lives on the ground, and the operating unit, No 5 Flight has been recognised for outstanding service with a Metitorious Service Award. No 5 Flight, with ‘Heron’, provided 24 hour surveillance and reconnaissance as part of operation SLIPPER thereby enhancing the coalition force’s tactical advantage for ground combat operations. However, it is the team behind the aerial vehicle who control its every move that rightly claim the laurels of an elite unit that can now wear their meritorious unit citation with justifiable pride. Executive Officer, Squadron Leader Simon Longley said that his team has set a historical standard to which future generations can aspire, by successfully establishing an entirely new capability on operational deployment, a feat that took commitment, team work and courage. He said the dedicated team that worked together over the five-year period knew what they were doing was innovative, ground breaking, and that is was unusual for a new capability to be deployed into a
warlike environment early on. Contingents of 35 personnel were rotated every five months, operating the Heron and providing an eye in the sky for coalition forces on the ground, including Afghan nationals. SQNLDR Longley spent five months in Afghanistan with 27000 of his “closest mates” at Kandahar airfield in 2012. He said the Heron’s
role was primarily Intelligence surveillance reconnaissance, and that one of its main benefits was the ability to stay airborne for 24 hours - unlike manned craft that would have to land for aircrew rest. SQNLDR Longley said this persistence in the battlefield gave coalition forces a real tactical edge. “With Heron in flight our forces
had access real time information, which allowed us to find any threats and give troops escape routes or where the threats were, so they could respond,” he said. “The nature of warfare has changed it doesn’t matter how many aircraft you have or how many bombs you have. attrition warfare is over. Now, it’s about gathering information, if you don’t have that you won’t win a war. “You need to find out where the enemy is amassing forces, where are the safe houses, where are the bombs being made, where they may be digging in a roadside bomb, mark the positions and relay the information.” SQNLDR Longley said he would look back on his time in with 5 Flight in Afghanistan as one of the most enjoyable in his career. HERON UAV... pilot perspective Heron may not have a pilot onboard but there is a qualified pilot and a team controlling its flight and operation of its onboard sensor equipment. Heron pilot, Flight Lieutenant Jayson Nichols said that presently only fully qualified trained defence force pilots operate the Heron. “The way you operate Heron is exactly the same as any other manned aircraft, the only difference is it is being controlled from the ground,” he said. “Air traffic control procedures, airspace restrictions and meteorology are the same. “In terms of flying there’s no real hands and feet control but I liken it to an Airbus civilian aircraft, which is all computer controlled and pilots have minimal hands-on input, except during take off and landing.
“As a Heron pilot my main role is to monitor systems especially on take off and landing,” he said. “Since 5 Flight’s return in 2014 the focus has been in getting the platform to as many bases around the country as we basically are getting people used to the idea of UAV flying in civil airspace.” FLTLT Nichols said the technology’s greatest advantage is the ability to gather information from the sky without risking the life of a crew and contribute to the safety and success of troops on the ground. Following it’s successful contribution to operation Slipper, Heron is back on Australian soil and
therefore very positive,” he said. “Continued programs with Heron means we can continue this contribution into the future.”
being introduced into Australian civil airspace. The Heron is part of a larger field of emerging UAV’s which have numerous military and civil applications, including maritime patrols, long range border protection and potential use in the mining sectors. FLTLT Nichols said it was encouraging to know that lives are being saved simply because there’s an eye in the sky looking down. “The ability to have that camera in the sky, and not needing to expose human beings to potential danger, is

STRONGWOMAN TOWS RAAF JET Local strongwoman Tiffany Cameron has matched her strength against a military jet, when she pulled a Macchi aircraft weighing 5000lbs a total of 30 metres at RAAF Base Amberley, to raise funds and increase awareness of the Mates4Mates charity. The one time Air Force Cadet and daughter of Air Commodore Stewart Cameron is passionate about the Air Force and used the event to raise funds for a good cause Mates 4 Mates. Mates4Mates supports current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force members who have physical or psychological wounds, injuries or illnesses as a result of their service. The charity also supports the families of these Defence Force members. Tiffany said she hoped to use her strength to give back to those who need to be strong. “I am a proud supporter of Mates4Mates, as too many of our veterans are ending their lives or succumbing to mental illness and isolation from seeing and experiencing things during their service in the ADF,” she said. The 27 year old who lives at Middle Park in Brisbane works as a correctional officer and has been training hard since April
for the event, and she practised three times a week during August training to tow the jet. “I’m into weightlifting and strength sports, and have always had a love for planes. So, I thought why not combine the two and set out to do something really challenging,” she said.
“I realised I could help benefit others by doing this crazy feat.” Although the plane is a large haul, as a regular strongwoman competitor Tiffany was not daunted by the magnitude of the challenge. “My whole life I battled the stigma that women are the weaker sex, and as a result we are limited to
certain roles simply because of our gender but there are always exceptions to the rule,” she said. “I wanted to prove that women could be exceptionally strong in many different ways.” Previously Tiffany has pulled cars and tractors and was well being known for dragging her Hyundai Tucson around local car parks. Now, Tiffany would like to transition her strength into chasing her dream of joining the Air Force. Tiffany hopes to reach more personal goals in the near future by hauling a 10-tone plane and take a place in the Guinness world record books. People are welcome to sponsor Tiffany’s future efforts here https:// www.gofundme.com/2jrdkdqw or for information on how to directly donate to the charity for information go to www. mates4mates.org Photo: Tiffany Cameron, with a Macchi jet aircraft strapped to her back, raising funds for the Mates4Mates charity.
