ANTONIO LINING TAKES INAUGURAL TAOM TOUR STOP!!! Fifty-one bar box players descended upon Michael’s Billiards in Fairfield, OH November 4-6, 2016 for the first stop of Tony Chohan’s Taom Tips 10-Ball Tour. First round action saw a few stars collide. Shane Winters defeated Robb Saez and Ramil Gallego beat Ike Runnels while second round action saw Tony Chohan over Danny Smith. By the third round, the tournament was in full swing and play began to get tougher. Jason Klatt and Tony Chohan were sent over to the west side – soon followed by Dennis Hatch, Ramil Gallego, Shane McMinn and Winters. Sunday play saw Antonio Lining vs. Billy Thorpe for the hot seat match with Lining advancing to the finals. On the loser’s side of the chart, Gallego defeated Winters – leaving him in fourth place. Thorpe was no match for Gallego either – leaving him in third. Gallego advanced to play Lining in the finals. Since the Taom Tips Tour is true double elimination, Gallego would have to defeat Lining twice. Lining was having none of it as he took it down 8-5 and

Congratulations to Johnny Archer for winning the Tennessee State 8-Ball Open held at Chattanooga Billiard Club on October 27-30, 2016. Johnny held the Hot Seat and faced off against a strong Jason Klatt. First set went hill-hill with Klatt pulling it off. 2nd set went hillhill again, as Archer dug deep and pulled off the victory to claim the prize. Great 2nd place finish for Jason Klatt. Jeremy Jones played great as well, scoring a 3rd place finish and a notable finish for Robb Saez, earning 4th. Jayson Shaw issued a statement that he was ready to avenge his loss in the previous match with a break and run. He then ran out game 2 after Van Boening broke dry. One of the very best position plays of the week came in game 3 when Shaw drew back 4 feet to a microscopic shape zone for the key ball to the key ball. He completed his second break and run to take a 3-0 lead. Van Boening came back strong with a break and run, then made three super shots in a row to close out the next game. He now trailed, 3-2. In game 6 Van Boening pounded the balls on his break, but nothing fell and Shaw ran out, then broke and ran out to extend his lead to 3 games.

According to Billy Incardona, Jayson Shaw secured his spot in the finals after he won his second game, at which point this was match was played for pride – and the grand, of course.
Van Boening replied with a break and run, and Shaw came back with one of his own. In game 10 Van Boening missed position but made a super long shot and went on to run that rack from the break. Shaw then B&R game 11!
In the opener Shaw hooked himself and Van Boening eventually ran out. He also took the second game to lead, 2-0. In game 3 Van Boening missed a long cut shot and Shaw won his first game.
Van Boening failed to squeeze his ball past an obstructer in front of the pocket and Shaw ran out to tie the score at 6-6. He then broke and ran out, but Van Boening answered with one of his own and they were now tied at 7 games apiece.
Van Boening came back with a break and run, then ran out again after Shaw broke dry to take a 4-1 lead. Van Boening then scratched on the break and this set off an extended run of great play by both competitors. Shaw started it by taking ball-in-hand and running out. He then broke and ran out to pull to within a game at

They split the next two games. Then, in game 10, Van Boening left the cue ball way to close to the 8-ball, missed, and Shaw cleared off the roadmap layout. In game 11 it looked like Van Boening had a chance to begin a comeback, but he committed a huge position play blunder, then missed a long shot to a partial pocket and Shaw ran out. He now led, 8-3. The two traded safeties before Van Boening continued his run of subpar play by missing while attempting to break out a ball using a super hard pound stroke. Shaw missed in game 13 and Van Boening ran out. But in game 14 Van Boening faced a miserable layout after making a ball on the break. He missed a long shot and Shaw ran out to win the match, 10-4, and the title.

With permission from: Mike Zuglan - joss9balltour.com - AZBilliards Staff It looked like it was going to be smooth sailing for Nelson Oliveira on his run through the field of 40 other players at the Joss NE 9-Ball Tour’s stop at Union Station Billiards in Portland Maine on November 19th - 20th, but in the end he would have to fight it out with Jeremy Sossei in a double elimination final before a winner was crowned. Oliveira had no problems on Saturday, as he scored wins over Jeff Mosimann, Andrew Burns and Bob Dennis to remain undefeated. Joining him on the winner’s side Sunday were Jeff Provencher, Dave Hall and Josh Rupard. Sunday matches saw Oliveira beat Provencher 9-1, and Hall beat Rupard 9-4. Oliveira would then go on to defeat Hall by that same 9-4 score. On the one loss side. Jeremy Sossei was on a tear after a hill-hill loss to Samoth Sam on Saturday. After that loss, Sossei went on a seven match winning streak, including notable wins over Martin Daigle, Chad Bazinet, Provencher, Rupard and Hall. Sossei extended his streak to eight matches with a 9-5 win over Oliveira in the first set of the double elimination finals. The second set was close early, with the players tied at 3-3, before Oliveira took control and won six straight games for the 9-3 win. The second chance tournament on Sunday drew a field of 20 players where Brent Boemmels went undefeated to earn first place. Boemmels defeated Travis Webster 3-1 for the hot-seat and then held off Lindsey Monto 3-2 in the first set of the finals. Boemmels collected collected $320 for first, while Monto settled for $200 in second place prize money. In addition to a fourth place finish in the second chance event, Josh Lerner was also the winner of the raffle for the $1500 custom engraved Joss cue at this event.

Pool players frequently mention that magical state - “The Zone” - when they refer to a great performance at the table. “He was deep in The Zone, man.” “He was unconscious.” “It was just him and the balls.” We all talk about it as if we know what it is, but when we try to explain it to someone, we run out of words pretty quickly. We’re not going to nail it down fully here, but we’ll characterize it and try to identify possible triggers to help us get there. One of the problems in describing The Zone is the idea that it’s purely a “mental thing.” I say not quite. It’s a mindbody state. One of the primary characteristics of being in The Zone is that it is a time when mind & body are integrated and are performing together without conflict, i.e., in harmony. “Getting it together.” This is an ideal state for playing pool. We want our brains and our bodies both to contribute their best performances. Meanwhile, we also want to keep emotion, doubt, and distraction out of our game. Some players feel Focused Concentration is the key, the trigger that launches them into The Zone. Well, how do you “do” Focused Concentration? If you’re “doing” it, and you realize it, you’ve broken your concentration - you’re not there any more. I’d say concentration is both a symptom and a cause. It’s like smiling and feeling good. If you feel good, you smile. If you smile, you feel good. In that sense, if you can somehow focus and concentrate fully, you may fall into The Zone. By the same token, if you’re in The Zone, you’ll find you are fully focused and concentrated. People say pool is a mental game. So what about thinking? Well, yes, we have thoughts in The Zone, but they are not the “monkey chatter” thoughts that typically run through our heads all day long. They are not about worry, failure, what’s going on outside of the table space, and so on. They are not self-conscious or introspective, but rather they are much closer to pure “joyous function,” by which I mean it’s just you and the balls, and they are pretty much already in the pockets, but you’re not patting yourself on the back about it. Your success is due both to doing the right things well and to not interfering with that. Our culture is very goal-oriented, but zoning is a process thing. Teaching martial arts students to take smooth, safe falls, we talk about how a coin rolls along at its perfect speed, each part of the edge making full contact with the ground. No rush, no getting ahead of itself.

Playing pool in the zone, there is no hurry. Even though you might know the rack is gone, the joyous function, the reason we do this, is to fully live each moment of every shot. The one-ball is as beautiful as the nine-ball. Feeling the cloth slide against your fingertips as you set up is as excruciatingly fine as the roll of a ball. You can’t readily will yourself into The Zone. I try to remember my triggers. Just like having a pre-shot routine, you can have a pre-zone routine that might help you get there. You still have to remember to do it, and get out of the way so it can happen. It’s more of a “giving up” than a “making it happen.” Musicians talk about “sinking into the instrument.” This is the experience we’re seeking. When we merge with our instrument - the cue - we’re in The Zone. Contradictory concepts like “soft focus” and “relaxed concentration” make sense in The Zone, whereas in our everyday state, these ideas seem paradoxical. Try softening your eyes and allowing the balls or the pockets to become bigger. Concentrate without clenching anything up. Find anything about your body or your mental state that seems for you to be a symptom of being in The Zone. Your personal Pre-Zone Routine should feature that symptom. Maybe it’s one of the things mentioned above. Maybe it’s a quality of your breathing. Maybe it’s a certain rhythm of movement. Maybe it’s how your eyes feel. Find something and use it to get you to The Zone. Unfortunately for most of us, we can’t make it last. It’s a few seconds to a few minutes at a time. Maybe we can stay in the “region” for a longer time, though, and get back in on some shots or innings. If everything clicks, it might go a little longer, but awareness of time is another one of those things that knocks you out of The Zone. Jack Nicklaus is in The Zone as he approaches, sets up, and executes his shot, but he’s probably only in the region as he walks to the next shot. Become aware that you’re in The Zone and it’s over. Congratulate yourself on what you just did, and you’re out. You can’t maintain it. As you develop the skills and experience to a) play well enough to get into The Zone and b) trust it and let it be, you’ll tend to get more Zone-time. The present moment is all there is. Dwell upon a past shot or worry about a future shot and you’re out. As Obiwan Mosconi would say (if there were such a person), “Present shot, only shot.”

A FANCY FORCE-FOLLOW STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.
This dated trick shot belongs to the category I prefer: the useful trick shots. It came in handy during quite a few games of 9- and 10-ball where I had a ball hanging by a pocket and the lowest numbered ball close to a rail. It made it so easy to pocket the hanging ball that it gave me very good odds to keep shooting. As shown, the 2-ball is in the middle of the short rail and frozen to it. We can’t cut it in the corner because an opponent’s ball is blocking that pocket. But if we have the right approach angle which is quite wide and marked by the two green solid lines, we can try to hit the 2-ball full using a lot of top spin on the Cue Ball. We can either use a 12 o’clock and 2 tips of English or an 11:30 and even a 12:30 hit, depending on the table. The second solution will work better if the table plays short. The stroke will need to be a speed 3.5 - 4. The CB will hug the rail, after hitting the 2-ball and pocket the 6-ball in the corner, while the 2 ball gets either repositioned in zone “1” or it may even end up in the same corner pocket after travelling 4 rails. If you want to show off this shot to your friends, you will need to pocket both balls at once. Thus, pick a 12 o’clock hit on the CB and change only one variable: the CB position. If the 2-ball comes long, move the CB a little to the left; vice versa if the 2-ball comes short.

Recently in an on-line discussion someone asked for a game that could be played on fairly equal terms between players of very different skill levels. There were some suggestions of short races and huge spots but those don’t really solve the problem. One game that gives C players a pretty good chance to beat the pros is Mum Pool. It’s an interesting novelty game that should be good for some laughs if everyone takes it in the right spirit. I first heard of Mum Pool fifty years ago at the Student Union where I learned to play. The rules were published in 1961 in a newsletter for pool room proprietors called “Chalk Up!” that was produced by the A.E. Schmidt Company of St. Louis. It was the first in a series of off-beat games intended to promote more play. We had a lot of fun with it. Here are the rules: Mum Pool is a game for several players -- four or more is good. Draw for shooting order. Each player takes only one shot when it is his turn. The rules: 1. Rack any nine balls in a diamond shape -- the numbers make no difference during the game. 2. A player who commits any foul or violates any of the following special rules is out of the game. The goal is to be the last player left. 3. The breaker prior to breaking must tap the table with his cue and say “Mum.” After that all of the following rules apply to all players left in the game. 4. The shooter is subject to all ball fouls, just as if you were playing eight or nine ball, but no particular ball has to be hit first. Touching an object ball is a foul, as are the usual: scratching, ball onto the floor, no cushion after contact, etc. The following are special fouls that come into force starting with the break: 5. Breaking without saying “Mum.” 6. Chalking. 7. Talking -- this includes grunting and groaning. 8. Resting the cue on the floor. 9. Sitting down. 10. Interfering with the shooter. 11. Using the mechanical bridge. 12. Shooting out of turn or taking more than one shot on your turn. 13. Shooting with either foot off the floor -- both must be on the floor. 14. Pocketing the last object ball on the table. (If the last ball is pocketed, it spots on the foot spot or the head spot if blocked.) There are several new skills that you will need. Simple sign language is useful -- He’s out! -- but everyone pointing at the person who just forgot not to chalk will probably be clear enough. We all quickly learned to rest our cues on the tops of our feet. The no bridge rule combined with both feet on the floor makes the upper shot in the diagram an effective safety -you may want to learn a little one-handed

technique. The lower shot is also a big problem for the shooter if that is the last object ball sitting in the pocket. If you sink the ball, you’re out, but you also have to get a hit and a cushion. Learn to shoot softer than you ever have before. When we played, the eliminated players would try to encourage fouls by the players still in the game, such as by talking or chalking. The original rules specified that you played until the first player was eliminated so there was only one loser. If that’s how you play, I guess he could buy the next round. We played that the single winner got the pot. Good luck and may the quietest player win. (Five years of the newsletter mentioned above was published as a booklet. SIMPLICITY: THE ULTIMATE SOPHISTICATION Applying the correct fundamentals is a critical part of any pool player’s game. However, learning effective strategy is just as important to maintain a high-level of consistency. The primary reason professional players are more successful than intermediate players is because they are much more efficient at managing the game. Simply put, pro players are much better at capitalizing on the weakness areas of their opponents.
Anthony Beeler is a 2013 BCA National 9-Ball team champion. He also finished 9th out of 1086 players in the 2013 BCA National 8-Ball Championships. He is a certified Level 3 instructor for the American CueSports Alliance and is the founder of Maximize Your Potential Billiards Academy located in Bradfordsville, Kentucky. Beeler is also a fully licensed Kentucky Educator having, received his bachelor’s degree at Campbellsville University and his master’s degree in Education Leadership at Eastern Kentucky University. Throughout his poolplaying career Anthony has won over 300 tournaments and has defeated numerous professional players in tournament competition.
One strategy pros use is called “knitting.” You might be asking yourself “What is knitting?” and “How can it help me play a better game of pool?” The term “knitting” should not be confused with the billiards term “nit,” which is a player or gambler who refuses to bet or wager on a relatively evenly matched game. “Knitting” on the other hand, is doing something simple during a complex game situation. The first thing a player should do is start with then end in mind and try to figure out what their opponent will like the least. Players need to understand that usually this will involve shooting a shot that is fairly simple to execute. Remember to never look for something difficult to do during a high-pressure situation. Many times, shooting the most difficult shot will get you beat. When weighing your options, try to think about the best place to leave your opponent. In 9-ball, many times it will become impossible to snooker your opponent from the contacting the lowest numbered ball on the table. One thing to think about is leaving plenty of green between cue ball and object ball. Another powerful tool is leaving the object ball sitting near either of the two end rails. You might ask, “Why is the end cushion a problem?” The answer lies with the fact that balls positioned in this location are often difficult to pocket. Several years ago I was playing in the finals of the Billiard Café 9-Ball Championship in Lancaster, Kentucky. I was left with a difficult off angle bank shot. However, instead of shooting the difficult shot I decided to play a simple safety (as shown in Figure 1). The safety won the tournament. It was the best shot, because I could execute it a higher percentage of the time.

The key to executing the shot is to strike about 1/8 of the right side of the object ball with lots of right spin. You will want to practice the shot until you become proficient at leaving the object ball on the middle of the end rail. The right spin will aid you at leaving the cue ball on the opposite end of the table. Once you practice shooting the shot with correct speed you will become very proficient in executing it. In fact, it will become almost automatic.

The shot below is a little more difficult to execute but can be mastered after shooting it a few times. The key to this shot is to kick to the bottom rail first with lots of left spin. Again, striking about 1/8 of the object ball using the correct speed. Remember to use lots of sidespin. This will serve to aid you in repositioning the cue ball on the opposite end of the table.

Many times the difference between winning and losing may be buying yourself another trip to the table. It’s important to weigh all of your options and to always give yourself the best opportunity to win. Any time you can gain even a one or two percent advantage, it is important to exercise that option. Even small percentages add up over the course of time.

Jeannie Seaver went undefeated for the second time in a row this year to take the Tiger Florida Tour’s 8th Annual “Cues for the Cure” breast cancer awareness fundraiser. Thirty-five women played in shades of pink in this $1,000-added modified double elimination event held on October 22, 2016 at Amy’s Billiards in Stuart, FL. Four players from the winner’s side and four from the loser’s side made it to the final single elimination board. Jeannie handily made it to the final board after sending several players west – Suzayn Yap 7-2, Roe Guarnero 7-5, and Cheryl Perez 7-4. Vanessa also made it to the final board undefeated, getting past Mandolin Robinson 7-0, Sue Roberts 7-5, and Cortney Bernard 7-2. Crystal McCormick also made it to the final board undefeated against Susan Correa 7-4, Stephanie Mitchell 7-3, and Echo Pinkley 7-5. Marlene Houldsworth was the final player from the winners’ side to make it to the single elimination bracket, getting past Shiri Avrahami 7-1, Susan Ruisi 7-5, and Julia Spinella 7-4. Making it to the final board from the one-loss side: Tour Director Mimi McAndrews, Stephanie Mitchell, Kelly Coyle, and Echo Pinkley. The final four from one-loss side redrew into a single elimination bracket race to 7. Coyle drew Jeannie Seaver but lost 7-3, and Mitchell drew Houldsworth, winning 7-4. Meanwhile, Seaver’s sister, Jeannie, defeated Mitchell in the semi-finals 7-4 to meet up with Vanessa in the first sisterto-sister final! Not to be distracted by playing ‘sis for the first time in the finals, Jeannie went on to win the match and the tournament 7-2. This win also secured the TFT Tour Champion title for the second year in a row.

(L TO R) CHRIS DEMPSEY, TOM THERIAULT A very strong field of 37 came out to the 4th stop of the New Brunswick Billiards Association NBBA Viking Cues 9 Ball Tour. After the dust settled Tom Theriault went through the event undefeated to capture his 4th straight win with match scores of 7-3, 7-6, 7-6, 7-2, 7-6, 7-3 and a great showing in the finals closing out the tournament with a 9-2 victory over the always strong Chris Dempsey. Dempsey’s road to the finals was not as easy, after a Bye in the first round and a 7-5 victory in the second, he suffered a 7-6 loss which sent him to the one loss side. He made his way through the one loss side with scores lines of 7-5, 7-6, 7-0, 7-0, 7-3, 7-5 and beating birthday boy Matt Crawford 7-5 before running into Theriault In the finals. Matt Crawford picks up a third place finish. Our next event is Nov 26’2016 at Club Black Jack in Edmunston, New Brunswick. WITH ALL 28 qualifying events now complete, the team to represent the United States of America at the 23rd annual Mosconi Cup is now finalized and there is one change from the team that represented the US at the Tropicana last December. The annual transatlantic showdown takes place at the Alexandra Palace, London December 6-9, 2016.
2016 Mosconi Cup: American Five Set for London Showdown become the definition of hard work. He brings tremendous Mosconi Cup experience and just as important the “hang loose” attitude when facing adversity which will assist the less experienced players. He was just inducted into the Hall of Fame which indicates his standing in the sport.
“Justin Bergman is the final pick and his physical stature belies the immense dimension of his pool abilities. Justin is a no-nonsense player who does not flinch during the many hard fought battles certain to occur. Confident and very polished despite being young plus this being his third Mosconi Cup, he will be looked upon as a solid presence within the middle of a very skilled line-up. Topping the rankings once again, and by some margin, is Shane Van Boening who will be making his tenth appearance in American colors. He will be joined by Mike Dechaine and Skyler Woodward who came second and third on the ranking respectively. The two wildcards are the highly experienced Rodney Morris who, lik like Van Boening will be making his tenth appearance, and Justin Bergman who comes into the side for the third time.

American captain Mark Wilson said, “This year we had the strongest effort to date for making the travel squad to London. That very fact speaks to the value of the points ranking tournament system, which in turn, is stimulating progress towards the U.S. return to the once proud stature in billiards played internationally. “The final decisions regarding captain’s pick player selection were once again very difficult and intensified by the year long race for points. Certainly weight is given to composite point totals and then that is balanced with current form from the final tournaments. “Shane Van Boening is the team’s No.1 and the finest player in the world. Report by Ted Lerner/WPA Press Officer After several near misses, Scotland’s Jayson Shaw wins his biggest tournament to date, capturing the Kuwait Open 9-ball Championship (October 24-November 5, 2016) with a 13-10 win over Taiwan’s Chang Jun Lin. (Kuwait City) -- Jayson Shaw has spent the last year knocking on the door of big time success. Tonight in Kuwait City, he could wait no longer and bashed the door in. Playing with an air of expectation, the 28-year-old Scotsman fulfilled the promise that so many could see coming for the last year as he won the Kuwait Open 9-ball championship with a well played 13-10 victory over a relentless Chang Jun Lin of Taiwan. The victory, Shaw’s biggest to date, is the culmination of the Scotsman’s meteoric rise in professional pool over the last 12 months. His American green card in hand, Shaw has traveled the globe in 2016, winning a handful of smaller events, and contending in some of the world’s majors. His 5th place finish at the World 9-ball Championship in Doha in August and his third place finish at the US Open in October were further proof that something special was brewing. Tonight’s win in Kuwait confirmed it. And nobody doubts that this win will propel Shaw to even higher heights in the months and years to come. The fact that this career defining win came against Chang was surely extra special for Shaw. For it was Chang who stopped Shaw’s charge at the recent US Open, and propelled the Taiwanese into the final where he lost to winner Shane Van Boening. Shaw’s also looked unstoppable recently and he carried this confident air throughout the week here in Kuwait. This positive vibe was further enhanced yesterday in the moments before Shaw’s round of 16 match when

he got word that he had qualified for his first European Mosconi Cup team. In the finals Shaw met up with Chang, who had just come off of two hard nose wins over current World 9-ball champion Albin Ouschan, 11-6, and then scrappy Chinese Dang Jin Hu, 11-7. The early part of the race to 13 final saw Chang continue with his steady, hard nosed play while Shaw appeared slightly flat. Chang jumped out to a 4-1 lead and except for a golden break in rack 3, Shaw hadn’t sunk a single shot. Then Shaw rediscovered his loose, freewheeling style and soon tied up the match at 5-5. The Scotsman took his first lead in the next rack with a break and run. When Chang returned the favor in the next frame, it was clear we were witnessing pool’s equivalent to a heavyweight slugfest. Another mistake by Chang allowed Shaw back in the lead. Chang was about to land one back but he glaringly missed a makeable 9-ball and the score was now 8-6. Two more mistakes by Chang helped further Shaw’s lead. Then Shaw nailed a 2-9 combo for a commanding 11-6 advantage. Chang, however, wasn’t done yet. He found a gear of his own and won the next three racks to close to 11-9. Shaw outfoxed Chang and moved to the hill. Chang broke and ran to make it 12-10. But Shaw, visibly nervous, returned the favor and ran the table for the biggest win of his career and the $50,000 first prize. “The first few racks I was trying to really focus, and breath and get really calm,” an overjoyed Shaw said. “But I stopped that and said to myself, ‘Come on let’s go, let’s get some adrenalin going.’ And I thought to myself, ‘Just do what you do, just relax and let it go.’ “I’m just happy, excited. There’s been a lot of hard work and dedication that I’ve put into the game over the last year and I’ve had a lot of bad weeks

where I’ve gone deep into big tournaments, and fell short. and it’s just nice to get a little bit of luck on my side when I play good. “I’ve played good the last few tournaments and it’s finally good to get the win. 5th at the World 9-ball, 3rd at the US Open and here I’m in the final and I’m thinking ‘come on, just take that extra step.’ Indeed, Shaw was not only elated at what he had just accomplished, but also at what the win would mean for the future.
