Sandcastle Billiards Emily Herpel in a shocking hill-hill hung 9-ball with a final score of 5-4. Lang then defeated Melissa Jenkins 5-3 as she moved on to play Pao. In the quarter-finals, it was Caroline Pao who came away with the win over Rachel Lang 5-3 ending Rachel’s run at 4th and moving on to the Semi’s against the anxiously awaiting Emily Duddy. Caroline continued her methodical pace at the table and steadily bulldozed her way through a fatigued and under the weather Emily Duddy with a dominating 5-1 victory giving Emily a 3rd place finish and earning Caroline the right to get another crack at Stacie Bourbeau. In true tradition of the double-elimination format, the race goes to the higher number being 7 in this case. Well, at first it seemed that the relentless Caroline “Kapow!” was off to the races and would easily force a second set in the finals as she was first to get over the hump with a commanding lead at 4-1. However, that was not the case as Stacie came rallying back to tie up the match at 4 a piece and then taking off herself getting to the hill first as she won her 6th game. Caroline was not done yet! She refused to take another 2nd place finish as she did the last event one month beforehand in a modified second finals sudden death match to 2 games. Despite an old knee injury acting up on her, Caroline limped around the table and was able to get the next two racks in this alternate break format to tie it up at 6-6. It was now Stacie’s turn at the table with the break in her favor. Bourbeau switched sides and broke 3 balls in and kept possession of the table. The 1, 2 & 3 balls were down off the break however, she was left with a long almost straight in shot on the 4 with not much to work with. A miss on the 4 began a struggle to pocket it before Stacie was the first to have a decent shot on it but nerves and fatigue got the best of her as she shoots the shot in the side pocket a little too softly holding the cue ball for position but not giving the 4 ball enough gas to get to the pocket! Caroline now comes to the table with ball in hand but misses the 7 ball as she got a little too straight in on it. A fortunate roll puts it behind the 9 ball and the two now begin a safety battle. Stacie opts to jump the 9 to pocket the 7 in the far top right corner pocket but just misses it giving Caroline ball-in-hand once again this rack. Pao finishes out the last 3 balls and we go to a second set. Finals set #2 are now a race to 5 games. Caroline wins the lag and gets the 1st rack with a flawless break and run. Stacie tries to answer back in the second rack pocketing the wing ball but then the cue ball banks cross corner and scratches. Caroline gets ball in hand but has a tough situation to deal with on the 4 ball. It winds up hanging up with a clear shot for Stacie to take back that rack and tie things up at 1 each. Caroline now at the table, breaks 2 balls in and has a tough back cut on the 1 ball in the side pocket. Down it goes and Caroline finishes a tough out for her 2nd break and run of the set! It’s good pool being played by the ladies folks! Rack four goe to Caroline Pao and she is up 3-1 over Bourbeau. The next rack goes Stacie’s way and she pulls back within one. The sixth rack also goes to Bourbeau to tie things up at 3 a piece. It seemed that Stacie had found her rhythm once again and was about to take the lead for the first time this set but a mishit 8-ball bobbles and hangs in the corner pocket for Caroline to take an easy 2 ball run for the lead and put her on the

hill at 4-3. These two warriors both show their fierce resilience and refusal to quit or simply lay down at any point as it is now Stacie Bourbeau that fights back and takes this set to hill-hill! It now all comes down to one final rack for the title. Stacie sent Caroline to the one-loss side 7-5 and Caroline came back to defeat Stacie 7-6. This third match up between these two is now hill-hill once again and there are no losers here but there can be only one winner. Alternate break format brings Pao to break. The wing ball bobbles and drops. The cue sits center table with a slight back cut on the 1 in the side. Caroline gets on the 2 ball but fatigue is evident in her as well as she just catches the long rail on the way in and misses. Stacie now, looking in good form, runs the 2 through the 8 and gets on the 9 ball in the corner pocket. It’s almost straight in but has a slight angle sending the cue safely towards the short rail. She takes a breath, lines up, gets down in position, ready, practice strokes aaaand shoots. It’s overcut and goes just wide of the pocket catching the outside of the long rail point, back and forth off the opposite point and up by the second diamond of the long rail with the cue ball at the first diamond above the opposite side pocket. Everyone is in shock! Caorline is left with that shot on the 9 ball and does indeed pocket it cleanly for the win and the title of Champion of the 3rd ever “Duel of Dames” monthly ladies open event. The next Duel of Dames event will be Sunday, April 24th 2016. Don’t miss it!!! Story by Alison Fischer For the Predator Pro/Am Tour’s fifth stop of 2016, players from around the New York City area headed to the south-side Brooklyn neighborhood of Gravesend to battle at Gotham City Billiard Club on March 19-20. Voted the “Best Pool Hall in Brooklyn,” Gotham is known

as one of the only rooms in the area to feature Diamond tables, and draws strong turnouts for the tournaments held there. At this event, a total of eighty-four players turned out to compete in the Amateur 9-Ball division, while thirteen competed in the Pro 10-Ball division. Along with the player-friendly

atmosphere at Gotham, the $3,000 in added prize money was a big draw for competitors, with $1,500 going to the prize funds for each division’s payouts. Throughout the weekend, a free live stream was provided by AZBtv and hosted by “Upstate Al” Leon. In what would become an international battle between a New York-veteran player and a newcomer to the tour, action in the Amateur 9-Ball division got underway at 11am on Saturday, March 19 due to the early turnout and close of the lower bracket. From the half of the chart featuring “D” through “B”-level players, tour rookie Nayan Roy found his way to the final through the winner’s bracket. Roy, an accounting student who hails from Bangladesh, India, first began playing on the Predator Tour at the beginning of the 2016 season and already has begun to stand out. In the tour’s previous event (Stop #4 at Cue Bar), Roy took third place, only to continue his hot streak going through the winner’s bracket at Gotham. After a first-round bye, Roy had a sixmatch run which culminated in a 7-6 win for the “hot seat” against Steve “The Russian” Astashen. On day two of the tournament, before his match against Roy, Astashen topped off a fivematch run with a win over Riyadh Benghalem of Algeria. Benghalem, who first began playing on the tour in 2015, has also become known as a threat this season, having earned a number of high finishes thus far. Benghalem stayed in the fight after his loss to Astashen, going on to defeat Willy “Shorty” Santiago (7-6), followed by another close battle in the quarterfinal match against Dan Faraguna (7-6). The semifinal was rematch time for Benghalem and Astashen—Astashen soundly won with a score of 7-2. In the final, Astashen had his second rematch

of the tournament—this time against Nayan Roy. The format for the match was a modified single race to seven games. If Roy reached seven first, he would win the match outright; if Astashen made it to seven first, the set would extend to nine games. This rule came into play as Astashen took seven first, and ended in a 9-8 win for Astashen, his first-ever tour victory. While the amateur players worked through their final rounds of competition, some of the area’s top open and pro-level players battled it out at Gotham. Included in the lineup of headlining players were Gotham house pro Jorge Rodriguez, Predator Tour founder Tony Robles, Mike Dechaine, Hunter Lombardo, Mike Wong, Frankie Hernandez, and eventual winner Jayson Shaw.

Shaw, who recently returned from a trip to Europe with his wife and daughter, landed in the final undefeated after wins over top amateur Koka Davladze (7-3), Mike Dechaine (7-4), Hunter Lombardo (7-6), and Mike Wong (7-1). Following his narrow loss to Shaw, Lombardo put in a strong performance, defeating Tony Robles (7-4) and Jorge Rodriguez (7-1). Lombardo then matched up against Wong for a gritty battle in the semifinal. Wong got out to an early lead, reaching the hill first at 6-3. Lombardo kept the heat on to tie the match at 6-6, but the last rack ended in Wong’s favor, landing Wong a rematch against Shaw in the final. The match for the title also went down to the wire as Shaw and Wong traded racks. With the match tied at 10-10, Wong was poised to score an upset win, but a positional error proved costly. Shaw took the opportunity given to close out the match 11-10 and walked away with the title. Alongside the the Pro 10-Ball event, a “Second Chance” tournament was also held on day two, for players who had been eliminated from the amateur 9-ball division. The top finishers in this event would be Chris Kelly and Koka Davladze, who split the first and second place prizes

Ask anybody. Stroking is better than poking. Now ask them why. “Um, uh, it looks better.” Yes, it certainly does look better, but let’s peer a little more deeply. This is a big deal. The jump from poking to stroking is huge. But if you’re ever going to be an excellent player, you’re gonna have to do it. A nice stroke is highly desirable. With it come better touch and speed control, and more consistent action. It feels good, and it looks good. So what are we talking about? We’ve all seen beautiful strokes, and knew they were beautiful somehow, even though they may look quite different from each other. We’ve heard comments like “he’s got mercury in his arm,” or “that’s a sweet stroke.” What are we seeing there? I think we’re seeing a silky, fluid, ultra-smooth swinging motion. It’s a motion that tells us that cue is pretty much directly connected to the player’s intent – his mental image of what he wants the ball to do. It’s a stroke that has been honed through hundreds or thousands of hours and is now smooth, simple, effortless, and accurate. Jerry Briesath says a stroke is “a beautiful throwing motion.” I like that image. What are some of the qualities of a stroke? The stick swings without effort, very smoothly, with no jerky transitions, no hitches, no muscle. It feels like you’re ever so smoothly throwing the stick through the ball. The right feeling is to feel like you’re accelerating through the ball. You’re releasing the stick, not pushing it or pulling it back. When you’re not ready to shoot – you’re not focused, you don’t like your plan, you’re not confident you’re aiming accurately – your stroke will suffer. A great stroke is without doubt. What characterizes a poke? Pokes are jerky. The stick looks like it’s being muscled around. Often, an overly tight grip will lead to pokes. If your hand is clenched, your forearm is also involved, along with some of your upper arm musculature. This “extra” muscle use interferes with the fluidity of the swing, making it look more like a jab. Where a stroke can be said to accelerate smoothly forward, a poke decelerates, actually slowing down on the way to the ball. A lag speed stroke might naturally yield a followthrough of about 4” or 5” past the cueball.

This is because the player doesn’t try to stop the stick. He throws it and commits. Meanwhile, a lag speed poke may follow through half-way into the cueball, or not at all. This is because the player is slowing the stick. Watch closely and see how players don’t follow through, or just follow a little. To do that, they had to be pulling back against the forward motion of the stick. Instead of just allowing the bicep to pull the stick forward in the swing, the tricep is working too. They’re fighting each other. It’s pretty hard to have the kind of touch and consistency you need as a player when you’re moving in two opposing directions at once. Here are a few things to try in your quest for a better stroke: • Check your follow-through. The idea is to allow the natural amount of follow-through for the speed of the stick. Poking comes from interfering with the simple, natural forward swing. Throw the stick and let it go as far as it goes. Don’t pull back. • No clenching. Any muscle tension you’re holding, especially in the shooting arm, interferes with the free flow of the stroke. Try to find your clenches and let them go. One way to do that is to clench a muscle hard and try to stroke. Let it go. Soften. Now, let it go some more. Keep stroking and observe what happens as you soften. • Increase touch. Most good players heft the butt of the cue as part of their pre-shot routine. They are trying to get the feel of the cue, connecting with its weight, shape, and texture. For most players, a light grip provides better touch, a better joining of cue and player. • Melt your triceps. On the hit stroke, try an image of the tricep giving up more and more completely as the stick moves forward through the swing. • No hitting. Pokers hit the cueball. They hit it and stop there. Strokers toss the stick confidently through the ball, like it’s not even there. They don’t hit the ball – they connect with it. • Trust your skills. Your body knows how to line up the shot and how hard to shoot. Throw the stick and trust it. You can’t really effectively steer or change speed during the hit stroke anyway. Don’t interfere with a beautiful thing.

How many times have you gone to the pool hall to practice, or bang the ball with your friends, only to feel a little blasé about the usual games? 8-ball just seems so... plain, and you’re just not feeling 9-ball. Straight pool? Boring! One-Pocket? Um… what part of “boring” didn’t you understand? It would sure be nice if there were some other games to play, wouldn’t it? Fear not, my friend! I’m here to help! Over the next few articles, I’m going to teach you some new games to play. Hopefully, these will help you out on those days when you want to play something a little more unconventional! This month’s game is Honolulu. Other names for this game are Banks, Kisses and Combos, or Indirect. It’s a very similar game to Banks. The object of the game of Honolulu is to be the first player to pocket 8 balls. A ball only counts if you make it in the pocket you call. And it only counts if you make it by any means, except straight in. That’s right – you can bank it, kick it, carom, or make a combo. As long as you call the ball and pocket, and it goes in any other way than straight into the pocket, you score a point and continue your turn at the table. The caveat here is that you cannot “kick” or “bank” off of the rail that’s connected to the pocket. So, a shot that goes into the corner after brushing the rail just before it goes in does NOT count – that’s considered a straight-in shot.

Called shots must even be made on the break. A common call is the head ball in the side pocket. If you do not pocket a called ball, 2 balls must hit a rail. Failure to do so is a foul. Fouls are standard: failure to hit a rail after striking a ball, scratching, and hitting the cue ball off of the table are all fouls. The penalty for fouling is the loss of a ball. If you have made balls, one ball is brought back to the table and is spotted on the foot spot. If you do not have any balls down, you will owe a ball. Honolulu is a fantastic game to practice some of your more unorthodox shots. It also teaches you to look at the table a little differently, and may open your eyes to new possibilities that you may not have considered in a standard game of 8-ball. If this game is a little too challenging for you, you might consider playing with 9 balls, instead of 15, and the first person to make 5 balls wins. Another variation is to take ball-in-hand for every shot, or at the beginning of each inning. Sounds like this would be easy, but believe me, it’s still challenging. This is also a good way to handicap your game if your opponent is a weaker player – they get ball in hand every time, and you do not. Killing the Cue Ball

When playing position, you often need to move the cue ball an uncomfortably long distance. Other times you will run into shots like in the diagram where you need to minimize how far the cue ball goes. Let’s work on some techniques that will help you “kill the rock”. In Shot 1, you have a fairly thin cut on the 6 ball and you want to stop the cue ball close to the cushion for the 7 ball. I suppose you could go up and down the table twice, but that is a pretty hard shot to control to get nearly straight on the 7. Instead, use draw to slow the cue ball down after it hits the 6. Most players know draw for its ability to make the cue ball come back after a nearly full hit. The effect on a thin hit is quite a bit different. At the cue ball leaves the 6 ball, the draw puts on the breaks and significantly slows down the ball, holding the travel of the cue ball to maybe a quarter as far as it would go with a simple rolling shot. In order for the shot to work well, you will need your very best draw, which means you will need to hit the cue ball as low as possible without miscuing. Chalk well and then inspect your tip. Did you leave any bare spots? When starting to practice this technique, it also helps for the cue ball to be quite close to the 6 ball so that not much draw is lost on the way to the 6 ball. Now you are going to find the range of cut angles where you can use the draw technique. Start your tries with an angle so wide (a very thin hit) that it seems impossible to stop the cue ball in time and still get the 6 ball to the pocket. Adjust your speed until the 6 ball just rolls over the brink of the pocket. If the cue ball goes too far even when it feels like you had your best draw on the cue ball, make the cut angle a little less severe and try again until you find the toughest angle where you can control the cue ball. If you make the cut angle easier still, you will need to dial back on the draw or it will make the cue ball curve into the 8 and 9. You should still be able to get position but it will eventually turn into a stun shot -- a shot where the cue ball contacts the object ball with close to zero spin. Shot 2 shows a possible result from Shot 1. You have some angle on the 7 ball and you have to keep the cue ball from bouncing off the cushion too far or you won’t have a shot on the 8 ball. Ideally, you would like to leave the cue ball almost touching the cushion. You will be working on this shot for a while, so let’s make it easy to set up. The 7 is exactly one ball diameter off the cushion and even with the first diamond, as shown. Your job here is to find out how far from the cushion you can put the cue ball and still make

the 7 and leave the cue ball close to the cushion -- say within a chalk space. Exactly which combination of speed, side spin and draw/ follow works best here depends on the table conditions, so you will have to experiment. My suggestion is to first try right English on the equator of the cue ball and to shoot no harder than needed to make the 7 ball. Of course it will help to cheat the pocket, and with a short shot like this you should be able to send the 7 to the right side of the pocket without much risk of missing. Once you have a set of spins and speed that works well, try starting the cue ball out farther and farther until you can’t kill the rock well enough to have a shot.

“Harness the Power from Within” When asked the question, nearly all pool players stated that “Nerves” were the most common reason that they miss important shots during match play. Most believe they need to shoot every tournament ball as if it were practice. They believe if they could play like they practice, their performance level would escalate. That precept couldn’t be further from the truth. First of all, people perceive a case of the “nerves” as something 100 percent negative. Even good players fail to recognize that it is possible to harness all of that energy and transform it into a powerful force that can propel your game forward. Some players fear poor performance in front of others, or not being able to play to the level that they expect during crucial end game situations. People get nervous for all sorts of reasons but usually it is linked to the fact that they want to win. Players need to take a hard look at the feelings they have about themselves so they can better understand that being nervous is actually just a negative way of saying something that is quite positive. Being nervous simply means that you are contentious about how you want to be perceived when you perform in front of others. “Nerves” are viewed as being bad because we associate them with fears or doubts that are related to how we may or may not perform. What we have to do is start associating our “nervousness” with something positive. Like it or not, you will never get rid of the “nerves.” You just have to learn how to handle them during key situations. In fact, pro pool players actually welcome “nerves” because it helps put them in the “zone.” Essentially, it helps them focus all of their attention and channel their excess energy into doing all the right things that need to be done.

Most players don’t even know what they are capable of. They have never even tried to convert excess negative energy into something positive. One thing is for sure: If you never leave your comfort zone, you will never be able to figure out how great of a player you could become. Being nervous just means that you are in uncharted waters and are uncomfortable because you are unsure of what might happen. If this seems all too familiar to you, then you should try to focus all of your energy back into your game. Just try to view each match as an opportunity to play your best. Always try to be as prepared as you can for each shot. This will also help make you more confident and will help you to replace negative thoughts and emotions with positive ones. In fact, nervous energy can actually help you reach a state of awareness significantly higher than exhibited during practice. That is where a good pre-shot routine comes in. There is nothing better than a good preshot routine to help you focus all of your energy into something positive. A well thought out pre-shot routine also gives you an outlet for all of your excess energy. Focusing on the process will help you to play in the present rather dwelling on the past. Once you start to incorporate a positive approach into your pre-shot process, your game will improve by leaps and bounds. Remember, it is also important to focus on breathing properly; it will help you to relax. Concentrate on all of the good things that could happen to you and forget any negative experiences from the past. Once you develop a good “feel” for the game, you can stop thinking about stroke mechanics. This in itself is something positive, simply because most of us are taught that we play poorly because we have some sort of mechanical problem. In reality, our poor performance may be related to the fact that we are becoming tense and letting nervous energy get the best of us. In the future, try to think about “nerves” as something that will give you body the extra energy needed to perform well. Don’t tense up; just try to relax! Learn to harness your inner power and use it in both a positive and productive way.

STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

I was introduced to this great shot by my good friend and toughest opponent, Mike Massey. We were playing against each other in the then very successful ESPN Trick Shot Magic and he pulled this shot off scoring a beautiful point. Being 7-8 inches shorter than Mike did not help me as I had a hard time leaning over as much as the shot required so I could not adjust within the allotted two tries and lost a precious point. It goes without saying that the first thing I did as I got back home was to practice this shot which still is a pretty challenging one but definitely makeable within 2-3 tries. As shown in the diagram, place your Cue Ball frozen to the long rail at 1.5 diamond distance from the top left corner pocket. Then start placing all the obstacle balls around it: two balls frozen to it and perpendicular to the long rail; one ball frozen to the long rail at half diamond from the corner pocket; one ball one inch away from the long rail and at the second diamond. Lastly place three more balls frozen to each other and to the short rail at 1.5 diamonds from the same upper left corner pocket and the Object Ball by the lower left corner pocket. This is not the most comfortable shot as you will need to place your elevated bridge hand between the Cue Ball and the Obstacle Ball (the brown ball). Then you’ll need to raise your right leg and rest it on top of the table for a good reach. As you see, you will need to aim into the long rail, almost at the first diamond so you can either bring your forearm out and parallel to the table’s surface, if you want to use a regular grip, or you can keep your forearm closer to your body if you want to use the European style inverted grip, the one I use for all my masse shots. Elevate your cue by 45-50⁰ and hit the CB at 10:30 with 2.5 tips of English. We need a lot of spin on our CB as we want it to draw a curve once it comes off the rail and still hold some spin when it bounces off the second rail so it can slightly curve around the two object balls (the black and the blue ones). Hit the CB firmly with a 2.5-3 stroke. That should be enough to clear the 2 obstacle balls next to it and make your OB (the yellow one) in the bottom left corner pocket. A clean CB and a new cloth make this shot a little easier and if you don’t want to dirty the cloth or, even worse, to damage it, you may want to use my Cloth Shield (US Patent Pending). Another greatly useful trick shot which on occasions helped me to get out of trouble during some pool games. Feel free to email me if you need any help with the shots I share with you in my columns.

streamed coverage. The $1000 added Men’s Bud Lite WarmUp 8-ball tournament took place Thursday evening before main event. League players and those entered in Main event were welcome to play. 96 men entered the $25 entry, race to 3, Double elimination event. The short race can be a real equalizer with top players and was a lure to our local league players who hoped for the opportunity to play the best in the world. There was over $3200 in prize money up for grabs and, in the end, it was Dennis Orcollo taking 1st and $1000 followed by Oscar “Gentleman” Dominquez in 2nd place ($640), Jeffery Ignacio 3rd ($400), Ernesto Dominquez 4th ($260), Hunter Lombardo and Warren Kiamco 5th/6th ($160 each). The Women’s WarmUp tournament saw Bernie Store from Arizona run through the field of 18 women to take top spot ($370) followed by Janet Dunks from Montana 2nd ($180), Mary Coffman 3rd ($100) and Juanita Brown from Utah 4th ($50). The Calcutta went off well. Auctioning through both fields took some time but it was well worth it. There was a net $26,370 in the men’s and $4,460 in the women’s. Paul “Kez” Marquez was calling on bidders to buy horses. His enthusiasm propelled the bids. Runners Denise Pulido and Darcy Williams ran holes in the carpet bring in money. It was a fun and exciting event. Top Horses were Dennis Orcollo, Jeffery Ignacio, Skyler Woodward. Top Calcutta prize was $10,230. Producing the Chinook Winds Open events take 100’s of hours. Cocoordinators/directors Andrew Monstis and Mike Jensen ran the event from start to finish. Bill Henderson and the WBCA team: Eileen Madden, Darcy Williams, Robbin Iredale (PR staff coordinator), Cathy Dunford (financial manager) and Pam Caraway (Podium manager) & all involved staff worked together to make this event successful. “It was about pool”. The acclaim came in from all fronts. It was very gratifying to hear the applause coming from both participants and spectators. Players new to the event said they had never seen such a distinguished event and are coming back to play at the next one in October. The event is growing nationally and world wide in stature with professionalism and popularity. The Chinook Winds Open 8-Ball in March had Mosconi Cup Points available to the pro’s as they vie for a spot on

Team USA. A huge gallery of spectators watched many excellent matches as the Tournament unfolded. People were able to watch Janet Dunks and Bernie Store and learn what great pool playing is about. The crowds were in awe of top players like Nicole Keeney, Liz Lovely, Kelly Isaac, Dennis Orcollo, Michael Dechaine, Jeffery Ignacio, Skyler Woodward, Corey Deuel, Oscar and Ernesto Dominquez, Steve Knoll, Marc Vidal, Rodney Morris, Scott Frost, Hunter Lombardo, Rene Rendon, Shawn Wilkie, Jason Klatt, and Chris McDaniels. They were equally astonished by top local players Cindy Sliva, Kim Jones, Eddie Carrido, and Damian Pongpanik, to name but a few. Melissa Little Hosts Viper’s Kids Boot Camp in Ohio MELISSA LITTLE A.K.A. “THE VIPER” IN CENTER

MARTINS FERRY, OHIO – Corner Pocket Billiards Club hosted this years “Viper’s Boot Camp” which was scheduled for Saturday, March 5th, 2016. The one-day event had young players ages 8-19 to participate in there first ever boot camp. Kids from three different states participated in this event and was packed-full of excitement as each child whom participated received a free pool cue, case, food & drinks, a custom billiards cake and a gift bag! The first hour the kids showed off their artistic abilities by decorating their new pool cues and cases with stickers, markers and

embellishments. The second hour was dedicated to learning the basics of pool mechanics, learning the different games that pool has to offer and lastly Melissa mixes the world of mathematics and the sport of pocket billiards to her camp. Corner Pocket Billiards Club is dedicated to promoting the youth in their local area so much that they created the the BHindThe8Ball Youth Academy which will feature guest speakers from all over the world. On March 19th, 2016 Corner Pocket Billiards Club held their Monthly 8Ball Open Tournament at 2pm. Mark Conway shoots his way to the Kings Seat. Brandon Roberts battled back to beat Jerry Endsley. Also, we had a female shooter, Jamie Lankford, shot superb against the men to find herself in the money with a 3rd place finish. Brandon Roberts tried to slow Conway down, but there was no stopping him. Total Prize $745.00. Next Big Open Monthly Tournament is 9Ball and will be held on April 16th, 2016 with doors opening at 10am and Calcutta at 1pm. takes down TFT 2016 Season Opener! Miami, FL (Feb. 28, 2016) - 25 ladies gathered on February 20th for the 2016 Tiger Florida Tour (TFT) kick off event at Brewlands Billiards in Lakeland, FL. Tour veteran, Stephanie Mitchell, started the day off strong with notable wins over Crystal McCormick, Jessica Barnes and Vanessa Seaver. Ultimately, Mitchell and another seasoned tour player, Roe Guarnero, would meet in the finals with Mitchell securing a double hill win to take first place. Tour newcomer, Donna Favors, had an impressive debut with a 3/4 finish, alongside Jeannie Seaver. Cortney Bernard and Vanessa Seaver rounded out the top 6. Exciting news! This is the first event where the TFT is affiliated with the newly formed North American Pool Tour (NAPT). The NAPT offers TFT members the chance to qualify to play in a NAPT National Championship, alongside other regional tours, as well as in NAPT Pro events. undefeated at Sharpshooters AzBilliards.com Staff Mar 4, 2016 Jeremy Sossei displayed his top form again, with yet another Joss NE 9-Ball Tour win at Sharpshooters Billiards & Sports Pub in Amsterdam, NY on February 20-21. Sossei took the winners side hot-seat, with a 9-6 win over Earl Herring. Herring moved to the one loss side, with intentions to earn a rematch with Sossei in the finals. Those intentions would be derailed by Ron Casanzio. Casanzio had lost to Bucky Souvanthong in his first match of the weekend, but put together a nine match winning streak (including a 9-4 win over Herring) to earn his place in the finals. The final match looked to be going to a second set, with Casanzio holding a 6-3 lead in the first set. Five games later, the score was tied at 7-7 and Sossei kept on that hot-seat, winning the next two games for the 9-7 win. In Sunday's second chance tournament, Bruce Carroll went undefeated with back to back wins over James Garrett in the hot-seat match and again in the finals. Joe Giuliani was the weekend's winner of the $1,700 custom engraved Joss Cue. The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour will be back in action on March 5th and 6th for the N.E. Pool and Billiard Hall of Fame 9-Ball Open at Snookers in Providence, RI. Mike Zuglan is already taking sign-ups for the Turning Stone Classic XXVI on August 25th - 28th. This will be a Mosconi Cup point event and the field will be limited to 128 players.

Claims Third Joss NE Win for 2016

Jeremy Sossei AzBilliards.com Staff Mar 16, 2016 Back in January, Bucky Souvanthong was defeated in the second round of the Joss Northeast Tour Stop #9 and won nine on the loss side to face Jeremy Sossei in the finals. Though Souvanthong would win the first set of a double elimination final, Sossei prevailed to chalk up that win. On the weekend of March 12-13, at the $1,500-added, Joss NE Tour Stop #12, Sossei and Souvanthong met again in the finals, and again, Souvanthong came from deep on the loss side to challenge him (seven loss-side wins this time). Sossei opted out of the two-set road to victory this time, defeating Souvanthong in a single set and chalking up his sixth victory on the 2105-2016 tour, dating back to October. With Souvanthong once again at work on the loss side, Sossei advanced to a winners' side semifinal versus Hendrik Drost. Norm Pomainville squared off against Tom Acciavatti in the other. Sossei sent Drost packing 9-2, and in the hot seat match, faced Pomainville, who'd defeated Acciavatti 9-7. Sossei claimed the hot seat 9-7 over Pomainville and waited, once again, on Souvanthong. It was Drost who picked up Souvanthong on the loss side. Souvanthong had chalked up loss-side wins #3 and #4 against Joe Ziegler (9-3) and Dave Varano (9-4) to reach him. who'd gotten by John Babravitch 9-7, and Angelo Hilton 9-4 (Hilton had upset any plans Souvanthong may have been entertaining about a re-match against Dwight Dixon, who'd sent him to the loss side, by defeating Dixon 9-4). Souvanthong eliminated Drost 9-3 and in the quarterfinals, faced Carroll, who'd downed Acciavatti 9-4. Souvanthong defeated Carroll in the quarterfinals 9-7, and then eliminated Pomainville in the semifinals 9-6. With visions of the last time in his head, Souvanthong chalked up for the first set of the double elimination final. Sossei took control early and often, defeating Souvanthong 9-2 in the only set necessary. John Babravich, who finished in the tie for ninth place in the main event, won the $500-added Second Chance tournament that drew 14 entrants. He went undefeated, downing Mike Hurley in the finals. Bob Cunningham finished third, with James Chemaly finishing fourth. Doug Wells and Frank Delconte shared the tie for fifth place. The next stop on the Joss Northeast Tour, scheduled for April 9-10, will be a $1,500-added ($500-added for Second Chance), hosted by Salt City Billiards in Syracuse, NY.

Story by Alison Fischer After eight years of competing on the Predator Pro/ Am Tour, New York City-based player Arturo Reyes has finally earned his moment in the spotlight. At the tour’s fourth stop of the 2016 season, held on March 5-6 at Cue Bar Lounge & Billiards in Bayside, NY, Reyes went undefeated to score his first-ever Predator victory. Reyes began competing on the tour in its inaugural 2008 season as a “D”-ranked player, and has since risen through the ranks to the level of “B+”. Prior to this event, Reyes appeared in the finals twice, but finished just short of the win in second place. With dozens of tournaments under his belt over the years, this achievement marked a high point for Reyes. “It is an unbelievable feeling to win,” Reyes commented. On his way to the top through the upper half of the chart (comprised of B+ through A++ players), Arturo Reyes started out with two shutout wins over Billy Santiago (7-0) and Peter Ghostine (7-0), then continued on to defeat Riyadh Benghalem (7-4), Elvis Rodriguez (7-4), and Omar Alli (7-5) to position himself in the winner’s bracket final. The player to come from the other half of the chart on the winner’s side to meet up with Reyes was “C+” player Nayan Roy. Roy had a breakout showing at Cue Bar and marked his first appearance in the “top four” of a Predator Tour stop. After he worked his way through his bracket, Roy finalized his winning streak with an 8-4 win over Irene Kim. Roy’s following match, determining who would move to the “hot seat,” was against Reyes. While this was a close match, Reyes pulled away to win 7-5, securing his place in the final.

Among the players fighting for redemption on the loss side of the chart, two would make their way to face off in the quarterfinal. From the B-C-D side, veteran player and former top finisher Rene Villalobos (B) made it into the quarterfinal round after a 9-6 win over Irene Kim. From the upper half of the bracket, Riyadh Benghalem (A) emerged after five straight wins on the loss side. In the quarterfinal, Villalobos took a convincing 7-3 win over Benghalem, placing Benghalem in fourth place, his personal best finish on the tour. The semifinal paired up Villalobos against Nayan Roy, who had been waiting in the wings since his loss to Arturo Reyes on the win side. The match went down to the wire, but in the end, Villalobos edged ahead to win “hill-hill”, 7-6. The final match was a duel between two veteran Predator Tour players—Villalobos vs. Reyes. Their match was a close battle with Reyes pulling ahead to the hill with Villalobos close behind. With the score at 8-7 in a race to nine, Villalobos had a chance to tie it 8-8, but miscued on the 8-ball. Reyes triumphed, sealing his first tour victory 9-7. Following his win, Arturo Reyes remarked on what has brought him back year after year to compete on the Predator Tour: “It’s a great way to meet new players and socialize…and because it’s a very competitive tour, you learn something new every time.” In a post on Facebook commenting on his win, Arturo Reyes gave credit to Tony and Gail Robles for running Predator Tour, along with the Cue Bar staff for hosting the event, and his sponsors Lucasi Hybrid and Billar Luna Azul for their ongoing support.

7 Annual Florida Junior State 9-Ball Champions Crowned th

Story & Photos courtesy of Tammy Jo Leonard, co-tournament director January 26, 2016 (Denver, CO): The Florida Junior State 9 Ball Championships and the 2nd chance 8 ball tournament that took place February 13–14, 2016, took many surprising twists and turns. We have new champions for both of these events. On Saturday, in the 18 and under girls division Leah Quillinan sent Kaylee McIntosh to the loser’s bracket in the second round. Kaylee fought her way back through the loser’s bracket to meet up with Leah for a battle of 3rd place after Kathie Sokolsky sent Leah Quillinan to the loser’s bracket in a battle for the hot seat. Kaylee McIntosh beat Leah Quillinan to challenge Kathie Sokolsky for the National Qualifier and won her spot in Schaumburg, Illinois to compete in the BEF 9 Ball Nationals. The 14 and under boys division had some interesting twists and turns. Shane Laney defeated Logan Hultz sending him to the loser’s bracket. Shane was defeated the next round by Trenton White and had to compete against his twin brother Sean Laney. Sean Laney took Shane Laney out and then challenged Logan Hultz in the next round. Logan Hultz defeated Shane Laney and fought a valent battle to make it back to the finals to challenge undefeated Trenton White.

March 15, 2016 (Denver, CO): What a fantastic event today at the Billiards Cafe in Ayer, Massachusetts where we held the 2016 Massachusetts State Junior 9-Ball Championships. 23 junior players from Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Jersey competed for the coveted Official State Titles. Everyone played their hearts out, exhibited terrific sportsmanship, supported each other and, all in all, exemplified the best that this sport has to offer. Michelle Jiang of Harvard Ma. won the State Junior Championship title, age 15-18 division, which she added to a string of State, National and International accomplishments. Sam Hoffman of New Jersey played some great matches to earn the runner-up honors in the 15-18 Division. In the 14 and Under Division it was Lukas Fracasso-Verner, of Connecticut, who went undefeated in the winners bracket for the State Championship title. Michelle’s younger sister, Tiana Jiang of Harvard Ma, played terrific for the runner up honors in the 14 and under division. The winners of this tournament earned paid entry into the Junior National 9-ball championships that will be held in Illinois in July. There they will compete for National titles, Scholarships, and a chance to be selected to represent the United States in the WPA World Junior Nationals in the Fall.
