Held March 9-11, 2017 at Chinook Winds Casino Resort in Lincoln City, Oregon, this installment of the Men’s Chinook Winds Open 8-Ball Championships, the 4th Annual, featured some of the biggest names in professional men’s Billiards. There were a couple of past champions — Skyler Woodward and Rodney Morris. You might also recognize some of the other contenders — Shane Van Boening, Dennis Orcollo, Billy Thorpe, Warren Kiamco, Amar Kang and Josh Roberts — to name but a few. There were also some notable newcomers — Roberto Gomez, Joey Gray, Johann Chua, Jeffrey DeLuna and Manny Perez. Some Western BCA players made their presence known as well, including Randy Camantigue, Stan Tourangeau, Randy

the end of the day, Skyler Woodward, Amar Kang, Rodney Morris and Billy Thorpe would also find themselves on the back side, nearing extinction. By the end of play, only 9 would be left in. Saturday began with Roberto Gomez sending Amar Kang home as he began his singleminded quest for the final. He went on to eliminate Josh Roberts, Rodney Morris, and crushed Billy Thorpe’s hopes for a rematch with Joey Gray after losing the hot seat to Gray 7-6. Shane Van Boening looked to be on his way to a shot at another big pay day until he ran into Rodney Morris, who had another plan, winning 7-5. Dennis Orcollo seemed to be on a collision course for SVB but he was derailed by former Champ
Roberto Gomez Double Dips Skyler Woodward 7-6. As we already know, Roberto Gomez would not be stopped on his way to the final with Joey Gray, taking out his final two obstacles (Morris and Thorpe). The Gray/Gomez final was on, but before we get to that, it should be said that the hot seat match was one of the best of the event, with Joey and Billy trading break and runs and run outs all the way to the decider. Joey broke dry and Billy marched through the rack until leaving himself a delicate shot on the 4-Ball to get on the 8. He missed the 8 and walked away from an open table and gave the game and the match to Joey. So close and yet so far.
Baker and crowd favorite, Richie Geiler. In all, there were 108 entered in the Men’s Division and and 28 in the Women’s. As always, the party started with a Calcutta auction on Wednesday evening (March 10). It was a spirited affair overseen by CWO TD Bill Henderson and WBCA President Darcy Williams. The Men’s Division Calcutta total was $24550 with $9600 the first place payout and the Women’s was $2010 with $820 the first place payout.

Thursday the main event got underway with many great match-ups for the spectators to watch. By the end of the night, many of the serious contenders were on the back side of the bracket (Roberto Gomez, SVB, Jeffrey DeLuna, Ramil Gallego, Johann Chua, Taylor Anderson, Dennis Orcollo, Warren Kiamco and Alex Olinger) and only one could fight his way to the final. Tough bracket. The marquis matches included Rodney Morris vs Dennis Orcollo (7-6 Rodney), Rich Geiler vs Jeffrey DeLuna (7-4 Rich) and SVB vs Marc Vidal (7-6 SVB just after Marc took out Johann Chua 7-4).

In the first set of the final (yes, a possible double dip materialized), Roberto was warmed up and ready to go. Joey was a little cold and never really got into the match, winning only two games. Roberto, with four break and runs plus three runouts following a Gray dry break, a missed shot and a foul on the break took the first set 7-2.
Friday was a new day and everyone, especially the back side dwellers, hoped it would be a good one for them but, unfortunately, many of the top guns would be up against each other before the end of the day with many eliminated. Before

Joey doubled his win tally in the second set but there was no stopping Roberto. His near flawless play continued as he closed out the match and claimed the title with his 8th break and run of the two set match. Roberto collected $10,000 for his performance over the three days of the CWO and Joey Gray went home with a respectable $6400 for his efforts.

Late Night 10-Ball a Hit with the Pros The Late Night 10-Ball Invitational, a new event for the professionals. The format was $1000 entry, 16 bracket limit, race to 13, single elimination, winner breaks with a first place prize of $8000. The “Late Night” referred to when the matches were played, starting Wednesday after the Calcutta, the final four playing Thursday after CWO play was finished for the day and the final on Friday night, again after CWO play was finished for the day. The bracket filled with all the upper echelon pros ponying up a grand each for the big payout at the

end. By the end of play Wednesday, Jeffrey DeLuna vs Dennis Orcollo and Josh Roberts vs Shane Van Boening were all that survived. Everyone was looking forward to a Orcollo/ SVB final but up jumped DeLuna who beat Dennis Orcollo to move into the final himself against SVB. The final score was 13-11/SVB and was basically a clinic, with nine break and runs (including the winning rack), one 1-10 combo in game 2 and all the rest runouts following three dry breaks and the very occasional mistake on the part of one player or the other. Jeffrey collected $4000 for 2nd place and Dennis and Josh received $2000 each for getting to the semis. Fun format + great shooting + a large and appreciative crowd = a successful event. Look for it to be on the menu next time.
to Claim CWO 8-Ball Title Brittany Bryant CWO Women’s Champion All the while the men were in action, there was also a small Women’s Division (28 entrants) playing for a first place prize of $4000. Former champion Nicole Keeney was on hand with a few other notable out of towners (Brittany Bryant, Emily Duddy, Kelly Isaac and Bernie Store among them) as well as some of Western BCA’s finest (Liz Cole, Kim Jones and Cindy Sliva). Brittany Bryant and Bernie Store made it through the front side undefeated to the point match, with Bernie winning 5-4 to get to the final. Cindy Sliva, after taking out both Keeney and Duddy, met up with Bryant in the back side point match. There Cindy met up with a determined Brittany and was shut out and finished in 3rd place. Brittany went on to the final and another shot at Bernie. Brittany had to beat Bernie twice and she got off to a great start, shutting Bernie out 5-0 and the double dip was on. Often the first set is just warm up for the winner of the hot seat and this proved to be the case here. Bernie played much better the 2nd time around. The ladies traded games until the got to the hill-hill decider. Bernie had won the lag, so she had the break. It was a

good break until the cue ball found a pocket. The table was wide open and Brittany never looked back as she ran out to claim the title.

Another Chinook Winds Open was in the books with two new and very worthy champions crowned. None of the spectators went away in any way disappointed. The pros put on quite a display of prowess on the table and were very approachable. We cannot thank enough our great sponsors — Chinook Winds Casino Resort, Western BCA and Bud Light. Choking is a term used in sports to describe athletes who fail to live up to their potential in games when they have previously shown they can do it in practice. For pool players, an example might be a player who plays “lights out” while practicing in the pool room, but when he enters tournaments is quickly eliminated because of shots he otherwise normally makes. Choking is something every pool player should learn how to control and minimize if the goal is to reach your full potential. Amazingly, often the difference in pool (and most sports) between the better players and everyone else is the successful player’s ability to control nerves, stay focused, and quickly bounce back from adversity. Notice, what I am saying is that it’s not usually because the better players know more, but instead because they have an enormous amount of confidence that they won’t beat themselves. Drilling deeper, here are 3 big signs that you might benefit from getting choking under control: 1. You immediately notice that your mindset changes from “playing to win” to “playing to avoid losing” when participating in tournaments and other big events. 2. While playing in competitive situations you experience abnormal nerves that you don’t experience while practicing or playing in other, less intense matches. 3. You realize that you have not learned specific techniques to manage your nerves, and therefore regularly play below your ability in tournaments. Choking is a natural, albeit annoying, way for the body to tell us we are threatened by something. In the case of pool players, choking occurs when players fear their opponent, fear failure, or fear living up to their potential. Regardless, if pool players truly want to play their best then it is imperative to strengthen mental toughness and employ specific techniques to conquer choking. It’s important to remind yourself of the importance of distinguishing between real fear (i.e. being in harms way) versus irrational fear (i.e. being afraid of a shot on the table). Ironically, both real and irrational fear lead to anxiety, but when we really look at the fear pool players deal with it’s almost always irrational fear – the kind of fear we should be able to quickly eliminate when we think in rational ways. One simple way to gain some traction is to use cognitive techniques in the ways in which you frame situations. For example, rather than seeing a good player on your side of the bracket and then hoping you don’t play him or her, instead frame the potential match as a challenge, not a threat. Yes, this one, simple decision can make all the difference in the world. When we view life situations as challenges only then do we cull from our personal reservoir of mental strength and inevitably pay our best. I would like to hear from you. I didn’t realize how tired I was of 9-Ball until I played a new game. Actually, it’s a new version of a very old game – Rotation. Pro player & instructor Joe Tucker developed it. I’ll summarize here, but you can get the complete rules and scoresheets at JoeTucker.net. For many years, the story has been that the Filipinos are great at 9-Ball and 10-Ball because they all grew up playing Rotation (with 15 balls). The explanation we usually hear is that their pool fees were paid by the rack – not by the hour. So, Rotation was a good way to get more table time for the same money. And look what’s it’s done for their level of play! We still played Rotation here in the ’60s, mostly as a gambling ring game (Pill Pool). 9-Ball took over, possibly because it was a faster way to separate bangers from their cash. Joe suggested calling this new version American Rotation to differentiate it from the old version played extensively by the Filipinos. But I propose we name it Rhode Island Rotation in accordance with the tradition of sometimes naming a game to honor the place where it began or became popular. Of course, Joe is from Rhode Island. I’ll explain enough here for you to get the idea and give the game a try. Rhode Island is a rotation game, meaning the low ball on the table must be contacted first. A match is played to some number of points, typically 100. Balls numbered 1-10 are worth one point each. Balls 11-15 are worth two points, so each rack contains a total of twenty points. Play continues until one player reaches the winning score. (With more than two players, it’s no safeties and pay for every ball.) Other than the break, every shot is either a called shot or a called safety. When you miss a called shot, or pocket a ball on a called safety, the incoming player can make you shoot again. The incoming player gets ball in hand on any foul, for example, scratching, failing to hit the lowest ball first, knocking a ball off the table, or failing to make a legal shot. No balls are ever spotted, so this is a perfect game for barbox play. Balls pocketed on fouls or on missed shots belong to the player who shoots next. The penalty for three consecutive fouls is a “free shot” (ball in hand on any ball), followed by ball in hand in rotation. Rack all fifteen balls, as shown. In Joe’s rules, there are a few special rules for the first rack of the game, but we’ll ignore those small differences here and talk about how to try the game. Here we go: Lag for the break. Alternate breaks after the first rack. After the break, the breaker starts the rack with ball in hand, regardless of whether a ball was pocketed or whether there was a foul. On every shot except the break, you must contact the lowest numbered ball first. Requirements for a legal

shot are the same as in 9-Ball.
15 2 3 X 1 X X 14 13 X X XXX X Why I believe this is a compelling, rewarding, enjoyable game: 1. It’s lots of fun! Rhode Island presents surprises, challenges, opportunities for greatness, and opportunities for excitement. As in games like One Pocket, momentum can switch very quickly. Miss a ball you called, and it could be very costly. 2. Luck is a smaller factor. With ball in hand after the break, and no requirement to sink a ball on the break, “luck of the break” is not a big factor. And with the ability to make your opponent shoot again when they miss, you’re not suffering from accidental snookers so frequently. Let the player who missed deal with it. It might be risky, but you could make them shoot until they foul or leave you a shot worth taking. 3. Pocketing balls is rewarded. Points are scored for every ball. In 9-Ball, the only reward for pocketing a ball is staying at the table. If you’re not a run-out player, every ball you sink makes it easier for your opponent to get out. The only ball that counts for anything is the nine. Lots of fabulous plays are not rewarded because the player didn’t get to the nine. 4. Planning is rewarded. With as many as fifteen balls on the table, it’s vital to think ahead. If you call a ball and miss, you could be impossibly snookered and give up ball in hand when the incoming player makes you shoot again. 5. Less frequent racking, more innings. With more balls in the game and more traffic on the table, a rack may take more time and more innings (maximum bang for the buck on a barbox). 6. Expanded strategic and defensive components. Playing this game will expand your strategic thinking and enhance your defensive moves. Constantly weighing significant risk vs. reward decisions sharpens your game. You’ll learn to see better, smarter safeties, and think like a player. This game really builds your skills. 7. Easy handicapping. Good news for those not at the top of the food chain – this game is easy to handicap fairly. You simply get “points on the wire,” for example, in a 100-point match, the stronger player might give the weaker player 40 points at the start. The strong player needs 100, while the weaker player needs 60 to win. “So, ya wanna play some Rhode Island, buck a point? I’ve never played it before …”

THOSE PRECIOUS DOUBLE-KISSES STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.
This month I still want to stick to my favorite trick shots, the traditional and useful ones. So, let’s keep the gimmicks away and learn how to get the most out of a “double-kiss”. Normally double-kissing is the result of a mistake while playing pool. It occurs when our object ball is too close to a rail and we hit it a little too full so that our cue ball does not have the time to clear the OB’s path when bouncing off the rail. We can actually flip it around and make it work for us. Here is a couple of valid examples. Let’s suppose we are playing a game of 9- or 10-Ball and the lowest numbered ball (the yellow one in my diagram) is frozen to the short rail at circa one diamond from D-Pocket. The 9- or the 10 Ball is hanging by C-Pocket and we have some obstacle balls in between. As far as our cue ball is within the dotted area we can try this first approach (X): Hit the CB at 12:30 with 2.5 tips of English (X on the CB in the diagram) and a 2-2.5 stroke, using also a smooth but quick follow-thru. Aim the OB about 3/4 full to the left. The double-kiss thereby generated, will push the CB backwards, while it will keep spinning forward, in direction of the long rail. If you will have applied a good amount of forward spin, especially if the cloth is new and the balls are clean, the rail will magnify the spin (provided you don’t shoot too hard giving the CB time to grab) which will take over and make the CB curve around the obstacles (X-path in the diagram) and hopefully pocket the blue ball into C-Pocket. This works if you manage A F solution to have the CB, after the double-kiss, hit the long rail at an angle of 30-40° (the solid blue lines in the diagram). The 2nd solution is somewhat easier. This time hit the OB 5/6 full on the right using a 5 o’clock and 2 tips of English on the CB. Your stroke speed should be 3-3.5. After the double-kiss the CB should follow approximately the burgundy path in the diagram (Y), hitting three rails with running English and then pocket the blue ball. On a very sleek equipment and with B E clean balls, you may want to consider hitting the first long rail shortly before the side pocket B. Now practice and master these two shots and you will have two extra aces up your sleeve to win your 9- or 10-ball games.

Usually when you are playing a safety at eight ball or nine ball there are blocker balls to hide behind, but at the end of the game you may have nothing to help you but distance and awkward angles. Here are three shots that come up time and again and you have to be ready for them. All three of them use the same cue ball in the diagram and all of them use a nine ball but the ideas also apply to eight ball if both players have finished their groups. Shot 1 shows the standard way to deal with a straightdown-the-middle safe. The goal is to leave both balls on the cushions and more or less straight across from each other at X and Y. You will need to S hit somewhat less than half-ball on the nine. The big worry is to leave a nearly straight bank such as by sending the object ball to A instead of Y. An aggressive two-way shot from the same position is to bank the nine back to pocket P and take the cue ball to about the same place on the side rail. If you do go for this shot, make sure your speed is such that if the nine misses the pocket on the short Y rail the speed is correct to stop at C, before the side pocket. Do you see your opponent’s possible safe response if you do leave the balls at X and Y? There are two shots very similar to the solutions for the one you just played. He can shoot the nine back to its starting place and send the cue ball up the table but B he has to be careful not to scratch in pocket Q with a thin hit. Alternatively, he can play a fuller shot to bank the ball to pocket R with a speed that leaves the nine back where it started if he hits D instead of the pocket. For Shot 2 the main goal is to leave the cue ball C frozen to the end cushion to ensure maximum distance if you miss the bank. The shot comes up in several different forms so sometimes the cue ball will go as shown off the side cushion to get to the end rail and some times you may draw or stun straight over. The ideal speed leaves the ball in the center of the table if you miss and the cue ball frozen. Shot 3, with the cue ball very close to the nine but not touching, requires excellent control of the cue ball’s angle off a very thin hit. You can’t afford to move the nine very far or you will leave a shot to pocket P and you have to miss pocket S. If the balls are sitting at an angle that makes the scratch look inevitable, consider elevating and using left P side spin so the cue ball swerves off the nine to hit near Y and continue to stop at E. It’s hard to get an exact thin hit when elevated as the cue ball tends to curve a little at the start and you usually will get a fuller hit than you want. To complicate matters, how clean the balls and cloth are will affect that early curve.

Practice. If you have the swerve shot mastered, it is a better way to play the shot because you don’t have to worry about getting the cushion at E and you can use a speed that will freeze at E. While these three situations are presented as end-game possibilities, the same techniques can lead to some excellent safes mid-game at nine ball. In the case of Shot 1, imagine that there are some balls in the rack area. With the right speed you can get the snooker. This pattern is frequently

IMPLEMENT A FIVE-STEP PLAN OF ACTION

1. COME PREPARED Being an effective tournament player means doing a lot of work before your match begins. No matter your level of play, there is an opportunity to survey the pool table to determine your conclusion to several variables that effect match play. You might ask the following questions: What size is the table that I am playing on? What type of cloth is on the table? Is the cloth fast or slow? Does the table roll to one side or the other? Are the pockets loose or are they tight? What distractions are nearby that I may want to avoid? Am I playing with a standard sized cue ball or is it oversized? You can also do some test break shots to see which side of the table you get the most action from. 2. FOLLOW YOUR GAME PLAN Once you have developed your match strategy. You will want to follow it. It’s one thing to do an in-depth analysis and follow it completely. However, during match play things can become complicated rather quickly. For example, if you break dry a couple of times you may be tempted to change your breaking position. If you overshoot position, you may be tempted to shorten up your stroke. In a tight match there can be quite a bit of pressure. Pressure is the number one reason players alter their game plan. Generally, pressure makes you tighten up and that can make you indecisive at the table. 3. KNOW YOUR PERSONAL LIMITATIONS Pool is a game of decisions. You should take into account the risks and rewards of the shot that you have decided to shoot. As a whole, amateur players are way too aggressive, and take unnecessary risks because they are not being honest with themselves about their true abilities. How many times have you tried to pocket an impossible bank shot or make a backward cut only to jaw the ball in the pocket? Just because a shot is possible does not mean you should shoot it. Professional players weigh the percentages. They ask themselves questions such as: • Am I more likely to be successful playing an offensive shot or defensive shot? • Can I easily attain position on my next shot? • What is my success percentage of shot 1 compared to shot 2? • Given various options, which shot will my opponent like the least? • Can I play a two-way shot? The best players in the world are

brutally honest with themselves. They have a true understanding of their personal abilities, and will only play a shot when they know they can execute it a highpercentage of the time. 4. IMPLEMENT A HIGH-POWERED OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE GAME Professional pool players are masters at making high-runs that are supplemented with a smothering defense. The smartest players in the world understand when to play aggressively but also understand when a good safety is needed. You have heard the old saying, “There is more than one way to skin a cat.” The same is true for pool. There is no single “right answer” on how a layout of balls should be played. Players should develop their strategy around their knowledge of the game coupled with a true understanding of their personal abilities. 5. MAKE QUALITY DECISIONS Being able to make quality decisions is perhaps the most important piece of the game-winning puzzle. While it’s not a guarantee, if you are second-guessing a decision before you execute it, it is going to prevent you from delivering a confident stroke. The time to think and analyze each shot occurs before you actually pull the trigger. When you’re standing over the ball ready to execute the shot, the best players in the world are totally committed to delivering a smooth straight stroke subconsciously.

The hot seat match went all the way hill-hill, 9-8, Jacki Duggan over Barbra Yeager. Däisy Lim would now face off with Cheryl Pritchard. Cheryl came out on top and earned another match with Barbara. Pritchard fought hard but came up short sending, Barbara Yeager to the finals and another match with Duggan. The finals would be a single race to 10 and keeping with the theme of the day, this match went the distance with Jacki Duggan grinding out a tough 10-8 victory! The goal was to make it to the Sunday money rounds. One player up for the challenge was James West. West lost his first match then bounced back winning his next 4 matches to earn a spot in the Sunday money rounds. After falling to the one loss side Jaime Gonzalez would need to win 2 more matches to make the money rounds, he did just that, 9-1 over N. Hughley and 9-3 over C. Bress. Ryan Baez would also need 2 victories for a Sunday

He then began a long road back to the money which was almost derailed by M. McNaughton in a battle of last year’s #1 vs #2. At Hill-hill and running out, McNaughton came up short on his 6-Ball position and was forced to kick, giving Ray-Rey an easy 4 ball out. He then continued his run winning the 2 more matches needed to make the Sunday money rounds. The money rounds on Sunday began with 12 players coming back in the Open/Men’s event. The day began with 6 matches, 2 winner bracket matches and 4 one loss side matches. The first one loss side match was a barn burner, Ray Reyna Vs Kenny Miller. Kenny took down the current #6 player on tour 9-8. Another hill-hill match would follow. Ryan Baez fell to Evan Chenevert 9-8. The next match saw J. Duggan’s tourney run come to an end, James West took the match 9-1. The two winners side matches featured 2 Peninsula players playing each other and two Southside players matching up. The Peninsula match was T. Gonzalez vs Chris Pyle on the TV table. Tony won 9-1. The Southside match-up would be a little closer, Chris Futrell over Nilbert Lim 9-5. The hot seat match was set. Peninsula vet Tony Gonzalez vs the 4-time state champ, young gun Chris Futrell. Chris took down the vet by a score of 9-4. Futrell had earned his spot in the final.

The next two games went to Nilbert. The 9-7 victory gave the Chesapeake native another shot at Chris Futrell. The Finals was a Chris Futrell, Virginia Beach against Nilbert Lim, Chesapeake, in a single race to 11 on the live stream TV table. The match started out close then Chris edging forward a few racks. Nil kept fighting back as Chris’s breaks were failing, he scratched 5 times on the break during this match. His lead had vanished, it was 9-8 Chris, Futrell gets to the hill. Then Nil wins. It’s now 10-9. The next game saw Nil running out to join Chris on the hill but he left an easy 8 hanging for Chris. Chris cleaned it up and sealed his third 757 event title! With 4 players eliminated, we were down to the final 8. It would be a war. Proof of that would be the hard fought match between Kenny Miller and Evan Chenevert with neither player giving an inch. The 9-6 score was a lot closer than it sounds. Kenny Miller would keep on playing. Evan finished in 7/8th. Kenny would then take out fellow Peninsula shooter, C. Pyle, 9-3 and earn a spot in the final 4. On the other side of the bracket James West and Jaime Gonzalez were battling to move on to the 5th place match, Gonzalez would tough out a hillhill match and play Nilbert Lim in the 5th place match. Nil won 9-2 leaving J. Gonzalez with a very respectable 5th place showing. There was one Gonzalez remaining in the tournament, that would be Jaime’s dad, Tony Gonzalez, who was awaiting the winner of the 4th place match between Nilbert Lim and Kenny Miller. Late last night, March 25, 2017, Frankie Hernandez double-dipped Jimmy Rivera to capture the 2017 NJ State 10-Ball Championship as Sandcastle Billiards in Edison, NJ. Jimmy was on the winner’s side, having handed Frankie his only loss earlier. Frankie came back at 3:00 AM to avenge his only loss to Jimmy. Both players were exhausted but played their hearts out. South Florida BCAPL Largest InHouse League On 03/18/2017, Beyond Billiards located in Davie, FL, held their end of the season play off tournament. All 20 teams are eligible to play and on this day all but one team showed up. During the normal season they have 20 teams with 8 players on a team that may play either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday night. Making this the LARGEST IN HOUSE LEAGUE in Broward County, FLA. Do the math that is 160 people……WOW! The doors opened at 9am on Saturday 03/18/2017. There was plenty of breakfast and coffee before the players would start the matches. For lunch, a free buffet was set up. Tom and Susan Ruisi (owners) called the Captains over and each Captain drew the name of a team and Tom started the board from there. This is a handicap league and the races depended on the handicap that had been established during the normal weeks of play. Each Captain must try and match their players up so they can win the 3 matches out 5 to advance and not go over 25 handicap points. Once Tom and Susan finished going over the rules with the Captains and players, they were off to the races to see who would keep winning and come back on Sunday for the final four. Before the matches started, you could hear the players talking and laughing and having fun practicing, picking songs from the juke box. Then …. A silent calm came over the room, the matches had started and it was time for all the players to bring their “A” game or go home. On 03/19/2017, Sunday the 8 teams left were: Assorted Nuts VS C&D Boys Jaguar VS The Hammer Puss – N – Boots VS 8 Ballers Beak Out VS Breaking Bad Advancing to the final 4 were: C&D Boys VS The Hammers 8-Ballers VS Break N Out In the finals it would be: C&D Boys VS 8-Ballers to play for the First Place prize money. Because it was a long day and it was getting very late on Sunday, both teams decided to split the 1st and 2nd Place prize money and each team receiving $3,250. 3rd and 4th Place = $800 each – The Hammers and Break N Out 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Place = $400 each - Assorted Nuts, Jaguar, Puss-NBoots and Breaking Bad. Because Tom and Susan wanted the players to enjoy the end of this season and relax before the next one begins. On 03/25/2017, all the players come back to have a FUN day. They play these events: Scotch Doubles, Point Game, Break-N-Run and 8 on the Break. Each having more prize money to be won. 2017 Mosconi Cup
Team USA standings after four events WITH FOUR events played in the 15 event series to determine the top ten players eligible for Team USA, it is veteran and former Mosconi MVP Dennis Hatch who heads the list, having pointed at two of the four events played. Behind him is another former MVP in Rodney Morris, while other former Mosconi players Shane Van Boening, Johnny Archer, Oscar
Dominguez and Justin Hall help fill out the top ten spots. This year it’s about finishing in the top ten once the 15th and final event has been played out in early September. That’s because US Team Captain Johan Ruijsink will be picking his team from the top ten finishing players. To give himself some leeway in this make or break year for Team America, Ruijsink will be selecting four players from the top ten plus another whose final ranking won’t be of significance. After no events in February and most of March, the ranking calendar springs into action on 30 March as the Professional Players Championship gets underway at the Super Billiards Expo. It is a Grade One event with points ranging from 50 for the winner down to 5 for a top 32 finish.

NAGLE goes undefeated Story courtesy of Mike Zuglan - by AZB Staff Last week’s quarterfinal match on the Joss Northeast Open 9-Ball Tour (stop #12) turned into this past week’s finals (stop #13), as Bruce Nagle completed an undefeated run through a field of 39 entrants, defeating Bucky Souvanthong in the finals, to claim the title. The $1,500-added event ($500-added to Second Chance tournament), held on the weekend of March 18-19, was hosted by King Smiley Billiards in Fort Edward, NY. Nagle and Souvanthong advanced through the bracket to the winners’ side semifinals. Nagle made it out of them, Souvanthong did not. Nagle sent Nick Brucato to the loss side 9-2, as Steve Lillis downed Souvanthong, double hill. Nagle claimed the hot seat 9-5 over Lillis and waited for Souvanthong to complete a three-match, loss-side trip. On the loss side, Souvanthong picked up Noah Wells, who, after being awarded a bye, was defeated by Brucato in the event’s second round, and was in the midst of a five-match, loss-side winning streak that was about to end. Wells had most recently downed Fred Gokey and Dave LeBrun, both 9-5. Brucato drew a re-match against Brent Boemmels, whom he’d defeated on the winners’ side, just after sending Wells over. Boemmels was in the midst of a four-match, loss-side winning streak, having recently defeated Ben Werblow, double hill, and Dave Fernandez 9-5.

Souvanthong and Boemmels advanced to the quarterfinals; Boemells successfully wreaking his vengeance on Brucato, in a tightly contested match, 9-7, and Souvanthong sending Wells home 9-4. Souvanthong then defeated Boemmels 9-6 and Lillis, in the semifinals, 9-5.
In the finals, Souvanthong chalked up more racks against Nagle than any of Nagle’s previous opponents, but it wasn’t enough. Nagle hung on to complete his undefeated run 9-6, and though he’s chalked up two wins on Second Chance tournaments on this year’s tour (2016-2017), according to our records, this was his first Joss Tour main event win. In the $500-added Second Chance Tournament, which drew 20 entrants, Frank Sorriento, who was runner-up in the March 11-12 Second Chance Tournament, won five on the loss side, to challenge and eventually double-dip hot seat occupant Dave LeBrun. Sorriento had survived a double hill battle versus Mike Shoemaker in the 5/6 matches, and over the next four matches, including the double set final gave up only one rack; to Mike Verducci in the semifinals. He finished with two shutouts over LeBrun. In addition to the prize winners in both events, David Dumas was the raffle winner of a $1,500 Joss Cue. Players are reminded that the site for the next stop on the tour (#14), scheduled for April 8-9, has been changed from Salt City Billiards in Syracuse to Hippo’s House of Billiards in Utica. Salt City Billiards was destroyed in an early morning fire last month (Feb. 8). No one was injured in the blaze, and though owners are optimistic about rebuilding, no final decisions have been made. Joss Tour director Mike Zuglan is continuing to remind players that entries for Turning Stone XXVIII, scheduled for Aug. 31- Sept 3 are filling up fast, with nearly three-quarters of the field already registered. We had 51 players arrive for a fun day of pool in Honor of my Brother, Frank. This was a no money added tournament but was amazed by all the support!!!! Total payouts of $4,230.00 were up for grabs today, March 19, 2017 at Bo’s Bar & Billiards in Warwick, RI. Thank you all. It started on the upper A side of the winner’s bracket, where a B player, Roarke Dickson, pushed through to the hot seat, defeating upper level players such as Dennis Levesque. Dennis ultimately placed 5/6th. Roarke won 6 to get to the Hot Seat. Nice shooting. On the bottom A side Al McGuane, whom the tour Sponsors, won four matches before meeting up with Ryan Lineham. At that point he was guaranteed 5/6 but he showed us that wouldn’t slow him down on the B side. He beat Ran Tamba, Mike Pettit to placed 3rd after succumbing to Ryan again. Al did a great job! On the upper B side bracket, Mike Pettit was found but not until winning two on the lower right of the A side. He then won two on the upper left B to place 4thPlace. Great shooting again. This is the same individual who won the Straight Race at Snookers with 53 players and defeating several A players. Congratulations, Mike! Ran Tamba lost his very first match to Al McGuane, then on the B side, he won 6 in a row for a rematch with Al and placed 5/6th. Ran is also a past tournament winner at Snookers, RI in the Pro-Am Tour. One of the most improved players over the years has been Charles (Chuck) Sampson. As a C+, he beat two B players, Fred Soulliere and Tony Ruzzano, two amazing B class players, placing 9-12th. Keep up the good work, Chuck.
