Albanian youngster Eklent Kaci added another win to his American resume with an undefeated run through the field of 36 players at the Joss NE 9-Ball Tour stop at Union Station Billiards in Portland, Maine on April 29th - 30th.

Fresh off his win at the World Pool Series’ Aramith Masters in early April, the 18 year old sensation swept through the winner’s side on Saturday with four straight dominating wins. Kaci beat Dave Fernandez, Mike Bourque, Bruce Nagle and Jim Hayden by a combined score of 36-13. Matching Kaci on the right side of the board was American Guy Bouthot. Bouthot took advantage of a first round bye, but then scored wins over Sarah Preston, Paul Cormier and Mark Stewart.

Kaci started his Sunday with a 9-6 win over Nelson Oliveira (the closest he had allowed an opponent to get to beating him all weekend), while Bouthot scored a 9-2 win over Samoth Sam. From there, Kaci scored a 9-2 win over Bouthot to take the hot-seat.

After defeating Oliveira 9-6, Bouthot was right back looking for another shot at Kaci in the finals. In the first set of the finals, Bouthot was able to double his number of games won against Kaci the first time they played. Unfortunately, the was still just four games. Kaci took that first set 9-4 for the undefeated win.

In the second chance tournament, Jim Hayden bounced back from a 3-0 loss to Steve Lillis for the hot-seat, to eliminate Jamie Garrett 3-2 and then double dip

Guevarez Rebounds On Saturday, May 13, 2017 hosted a TriState Tour Stop. The $1,000-added event drew 47 entrants to Steinway Billiards in Astoria (Queens), NY. This was my third year attending the West Coast Challenge here on the west coast of Florida, which was held at the Doubletree by Hilton Tampa Airport-Westshore Florida in Tampa, FL on April 6-9, 2017.

Each year this event gets better and better. Here are some facts posted by a staff member: • Did you know that over 700 entrants took part in this year’s event?

DEVELOP ROUTINES TO PLAY YOUR BEST Playing pool is a game that requires finesse, as there are countless times at the table where it is essential to have your mind and body working in perfect synchrony so that you can make that difficult cut, bank, or combination shot. In order to achieve the needed confidence and muscle-memory that good pool playing requires, it is imperative that you develop unique, personalized routines that help you prepare for battle.

As humans, we are creatures of habit and perform our best when we feel comfortable in our surroundings. When we experience new situations in life, we run the risk of overreacting and allowing our nervous system to create a high level of anxiety to help ward off the stress. Unfortunately, while we are actively focusing to minimize nerves, we often get “out of sorts” and away from the rituals we usually do that allow us to play our best. For example, if you are fixated on looking at the bracket for the tournament, you might forget about the importance of taking a few minutes to yourself to breathe, use imagery to see success, and review your personal goals before putting together your stick.

The good news is that we can ward off much of the negative anxiety we experience in life by developing routines that help us feel comfortable. In essence, the better we feel in our surroundings, the better the chances we will play our best pool. Some ideas to consider when developing your routines include: • • •

Be prepared. The night before a big tournament be sure to take care of all the small details, including preparing your cue, getting enough rest, and plotting out directions to the tournament so that you’ll have enough time to get there without being rushed.

Develop a mental pre-game mindset. Don’t leave things to chance, but instead make sure you know the basics when it comes to imagery, cue words, self-talk, and bounce-back tips.

Go through a structured pre-game practice routine. The more you are in control, the less stress you will experience. What this means is that having a specific preshooting routine will help you feel comfortable in your surroundings and leave you less time to look around and become nervous noticing other ringers signing up for the tournament.

Walk through resiliency strategies. While we never want to think we’ll ever miss another shot, the reality is that we will (in fact, we’ll miss lots of them in our lifetime!). The key is to think ahead of time how you will respond and regroup the first time you miss a shot that you shouldn’t, thereby preventing “mental meltdowns” that result in you missing more than a shot (in most cases that kills it for the entire tournament). By having a comfortable routine that allows you to step away, breathe, and normalize the situation you will be far more likely to make the next shot and start a new run, compared to allowing the emotions of the situation take you away from your game.

A little preparation can go a long, long way when it comes to developing the confidence needed to maximize your pool playing. Take note of the things that make you comfortable and confident, and look for ways to replicate those behaviors as often as possible.

PRECISION – 9 WAYS TO IMPROVE RIGHT NOW

We play one of the most precise games in the world.

In pool, missing your aim angle by one or two degrees is sometimes enough to make you miss the shot. Missing position by a fraction of an inch can sometimes cost us a game.

There is always a higher level of precision available.

You can pocket a ball, but a better player can pocket that ball in a specific portion of the pocket. You can get position for your next shot, but a better player can get closer position or a better angle. You have pretty good speed control, but guess what – somebody else has better, more precise speed control.

So, one way to get better, no matter what your current level, is to find ways to become more precise. The following are nine physical things to check or try to move toward more precision: 1. Flatter cue – Sidespin makes the cueball curve. The more elevated the butt of your cue, and the more sidespin, the more curve. This is fine if you’re planning on it, but devastating if you’re not. Lots of good players know better, but don’t realize they could elevate less.

Get your stick down to a finger thickness above the rail whenever possible.

2. Shorter bridge – Think of your bridge as a fulcrum (a pivot point). Any side-to-side wobble error you might have in the back of your stroke shows up in side-to-side tip movement at the cueball. The further that pivot point is from the cueball, the more error shows up at impact.

The pros get away with their long bridges because they have very straight, very grooved strokes. Sink about a million balls, and your stroke will be that straight too.

Meanwhile, trade off some of that 16” bridge for some accuracy.

3. Snug bridge – Sure, you have a good, versatile closed loop bridge. But is it absolutely solid? Your bridge should be a rock. Once you are in position, it should have no motion and there should be no way for the stick to slop around in the bridge. You can make bridge improvements your whole pool career. Shake it a little, snug it in different ways, make it broad & stable, change your wrist angle a degree or two, put more pressure on it.

your contact point on the cueball. Are you going to hit it precisely where you intended? You can see this much more clearly when you stop. Adjust your bridge to make micro-corrections to the tip placement.

Aim with tip close to cueball – When you bring your tip near the cueball, make sure you are actually bringing the tip close to the ball. If you are three inches from the cueball, your judgment about where the tip is actually going to hit the ball is suspect. Since your swing is an arc (like a pendulum), the tip is not going to move forward in a straight line. The closer you bring your tip, the more likely you will hit where you think you’ll hit. Test this by bringing the tip to a stop and then slowly pushing the stick forward until you touch the cueball. You might be astonished at how far away you were. Try for under an inch.

Short stroke – Long, swoopy strokes may be beautiful, but they are not easy to control. Sometimes it pays to take a very short hit stroke. If it’s a difficult, highpressure shot where speed is not a big concern, you might try the short stroke. It’s harder to go off your aim line when the stroke is only a few inches. Make the ball.

More athletic stance – Your stance should be unwavering. Once you are in position, there should be zero motion in your stance. Many players are moving a little, and are not aware of it. Try taking a more athletic stance. More distance between your feet. No locked knee joints. No squatting. Reasonably balanced weight distribution side-to-side and front-to-back. Feel like a stable tripod.

Eyeglasses – Yes, there is a good thing about eyeglasses.

You can use the top of the frame or lenses to see when your eyes are off level. If your eyes are tilted, it’s very hard to aim accurately. You may be surprised to see how much your head tilt varies.

Tip shape – Your tip shape (how curved is it) determines how much spin you get for how far the shaft is displaced from the center of the cueball. A dime radius tip (same curve as a dime and more sharply curved than a nickel) gives more spin with a given offset, but requires far more precision from the player to get consistent spin. It also takes more frequent maintenance to keep that shape. Use a nickel radius unless you are a very advanced player.

NO MASSE’ SHOTS ALLOWED This month shot is harder than it looks and tests your ability in shooting straight and hit the Cue Ball exactly where you intend.

STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin.

Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.”

Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame.

Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

Let’s start by setting it up: place the Cue Ball anywhere inside the square X area. However, I recommend using the position suggested in my diagram.

Freeze the 1-ball (the Yellow Ball) to the CB making sure their line of center aims at the 3-Ball (the Red one) as for pocketing it in pocket F. Prior to that, place the 3-Ball at the 1st diamond from pocket E and at about ½ ball from the rail. Another ball (the Green Ball) needs to lay in front of side pocket E at about 1-ball distance from the rail.

The 10-Ball is placed by corner pocket D and you can always freeze an extra ball (the Pink one) to it to allow yourself a bigger margin of error.

The CB-1 line of centers should not only aim for pocketing the 3-Ball but also to have the 1-Ball hit the right half of the Green Ball.

When I was growing up and learning the game, most poolrooms did not allow masse shots. Had I known this shot, I could have had an extra chance to win a 9- or 10-Ball game.

Here’s how: Use a 6 o’clock, 2-tip, speed 2.5 hit on the CB, along with a smooth followthrough.

If you apply a precise hit without any unwanted English, the CB and the 1-Ball will travel forward together until the latter will contact the Green Ball and sink into pocket E. The Green Ball will obviously move out of the way while the CB, still rich with backspin, will still slide forward. Therefore, once the CB hits the red 3-Ball, hopefully making it into pocket D, will draw back and pocket the 10-ball.

It helps to remind that it is legal to shoot into an object ball which is frozen to the Cue Ball, which makes this shot a “fancy” one rather than a “tricky” one!

Here is a draw drill from Willie Mosconi’s book “Winning Pocket Billiards.” It will teach you precise control of the distance and angle you get with soft draw off a nearby object ball. This is especially useful for picking apart clusters of balls and for playing some safes where you need to draw over to an exact spot to hide the cue ball. It is one of the first drills I practiced and I still find it useful to test how the cloth and cue ball work on an unfamiliar table.

Let’s start with the easy version first. Put three balls near the side pocket as shown in the diagram. You begin with cue ball in hand. You must pocket the balls in order in the side pocket and the cue ball is not allowed to touch a cushion or any second ball on any shot. The successive positions are shown for a good clearance of the three balls.

Here are some suggestions if you have trouble starting up on this drill. First, you need to strive for the perfect angle on the next ball with each ball you pocket. You need a little angle so you can move the cue ball sideways for the next ball, but not so much angle you can’t stop the cue ball from going too far sideways. I find that leaving the cue ball and object ball pointed straight at the pocket point P is ideal.

This gives you a visible position target.

Second, staying close to the balls is much better than trying to play the shot from the middle of the table. When you are that far back it’s hard to keep the required draw on the cue ball with a soft shot and a firm shot is likely to take you too far down the table.

Third is that you need to become an expert at cheating the pocket. Most of the time when playing you want to send the ball to the center of the pocket so that you have margin for error to both the left and right. These shots are so short that you can give up some pocketing precision to make maneuvering the cue ball easier. If you get perfectly straight on a ball, just put it in the left side of the pocket so you can move on to the next ball. But be careful! You still need to put the object ball in the right part of the pocket or the speed of the cue ball to the right will be off.

Lastly, you need to learn how side spin can help you achieve position with this kind of shot. Usually side spin is used only on the cushions, but here side spin helps with either creating or killing the cut angle.

For example, if you had too much angle on the 1 ball, right English would let you hit the object ball much fuller and still get it to go to the pocket. This technique works best if the cue ball is close to the object ball, so don’t expect it to help much if the cue ball is in the middle of the table.

If you get on the wrong side of the object ball it’s possible to use that same right English to bring you to the right but you need to

elevate the cue stick to about 30 degrees so you are playing a soft swerve shot. Similarly elevated left English can hold the cue ball if you have too much cut angle. For these shots, seek out a player who can demonstrate them if you don’t get them right away -- this is an advanced technique.

Three balls should be easy. If you can do five sets in a row, move on to four balls. When you do five in a row with four add another ball and so on. I’ve labeled the group of seven as “medium” because if you really master soft draw you should be able to get to 10. Besides having to do more consecutive shots the shots become harder as the balls are placed farther from the pocket so they can all fit. It’s up to you to figure out how close to the pocket and each other is optimum for the starting positions.

Recently one of my students asked, “How can I erase the memory of a missed shot and not let it create selfdoubt for the rest of my match? Whenever I play a bad match I immediately start to think about how much that’s affected my chances of winning that particular tournament. Negative thoughts start to creep in…it’s hard to rebound from a poor performance.”

As a coach, I usually tell my students that thoughts are just thoughts and to treat them as such. When your brain produces negativity, a single thought doesn’t have the power to become an emotion that will affect your overall performance. However, the more time you devote to that particular thought, the more you empower it to change your overall mood. Negative thoughts generally lead to performance anxiety, which can dramatically decrease your overall level of play.

Below you will find 4 ways to eliminate negative thoughts you are likely to encounter after missing a ball or making a costly position error.

1. Respond to the challenge: Professional players tend to respond to the challenge after a poor performance.

On the other hand, losers react. It is important to become aware of your feelings and not let them overpower you. If you miss an easy shot, you can expect a negative thought to enter your head. This is actually very normal.

Good pool players pay attention to their negative thoughts, and give themselves time to respond, instead of just reacting.

2. Keep your thoughts in the present moment: Many students have found that trying to clear their mind and focus on their breathing can help.

Other options include concentrating on your preshot routine or focusing on one of your 5 senses (because your current senses only exist in the present). Good players understand that negativity only exists from memories of past performances or the fear of future ones. If you embed yourself into the present, then you will be more likely to exhibit a positive attitude throughout your match.

3. Display good body language: There’s definitely a relationship between good posture and mood. If you continually frown and put yourself in a hunched over position while you are sitting in the chair, you will eventually start to embrace negative thoughts. Conversely, if you sit with your shoulders back and smile, you’ll feel more confident. When you think you are a slump, notice your body language and correct it as the need arises.

4. Start over: • Replace negative thoughts with something positive. Focus on something completely unrelated to pool, like your favorite sport or restaurant.

• If you feel uncomfortable while you are down on the shot, get up and restart your pre-shot routine.

• Focus on one stroke thought (for example, you might focus on putting a really good pause into every backswing).

Try these mental game techniques and I believe you find something that will help you rebound from a poor match performance! Another thing to remember is that your first match does not have to set the tone for the entire tournament. Many great tournament performances have started with a loss.

Work on rebounding and stick to your mental plan throughout the tournament.

Kevin Scalzitti sent David Leggat to the back side and went on to take the point, little knowing he’d again face Leggat. David worked his way through the one loss side, winning seven matches to get another shot at Scalzitti. The Leggat/Scalzitti re-match was an extended race to 9 in the finals. Leggat needed to reach seven wins first, to extend the match to nine games. He did so without giving up a rack and added two more to claim his first Tri-State title in only two attempts.

The tantalizing allure of many events in which to play throughout a week of pool camaraderie and great dates convenient to most independent leagues at the end of their seasonal league play fueled an 8% jump in entries at the 13th edition of the Omega Billiards ACS National Championships, produced by the American CueSports Alliance (ACS), May 13-20, 2017 and held at the Tropicana Las Vegas. The ACS added $40,500 to the total prize fund.

Action began with 9-ball and 8-ball Singles and Scotch Doubles play, as Frank DeCastecker (Moline, IL) outpaced the Men’s 9-Ball Singles field in this handicapped format to march undefeated to the title match – outdueling his final’s higher-rated opponent Dustin Gunia (Omaha, NE) 7-8 for the crown. On the Women’s 9-Ball Singles side, Connie Eddins (Portsmouth, VA) claimed the hot seat but could not take advantage of the two-game spot/set against the powerful game of Gail Eaton (Bourne, TX), as Gail grabbed the laurels 7-4/7-1. The Advanced 8-Ball Scotch Doubles championship was claimed by the once-defeated power duo of Dustin Gunia & Jessica

In the Men’s Standard 8-Ball Singles undefeated David Martinez (San Antonio, TX) made short work of Peter Bidne (Crystal, MN) 4-1 in the finals, while Lisa Bailey (San Antonio, TX) absconded with a two-set finals win over Patty Sangster (Hamilton, ON) 4-2/4-1 in the Women’s Standard 8-Ball Singles division. In the aged divisions, Kim Bohnet (Medicine Hat, AB) only took one set to upend Amos Bush (Plano, TX) 5-2 for the Men’s Senior 8-Ball Singles (55+) crown; three-time champion Shawn Modelo (Antioch, CA) fell short of another title with a two-set loss to Valerie Porter (Los Angeles, CA) 2-4/4-1 for the Women’s Senior 8-Ball Singles (50+) crown!
