After the May Issue was completed and sent out. My beautiful wife Mary had to have Breast Cancer Surgery. All went well with the surgery so we thought. Three weeks later we were to find out that there was an infection in the breast so a second surgery had to be performer to irrigate or remove the infection. It doesn’t end there. On the first of June we were returning home from an appointment and while entering our residence, Mary collapsed and fell to the floor. We would later find out that the broken femur was caused by the Breast Cancer that had gone to the Lymph Nodes and had gone to her femur and that caused the break. The doctors didn’t operate for 6 days because of the labs. The good news is Mary is in rehab and will be coming home by the second week of July. She is improving daily and taking medicines for the cancer and to keep her labs right. The July issue is results from May and June. The August issue will be out on time and everything will return to the schedule we have previously done. If you want to find out more about what happened please go to my Facebook page: www.facebook.com/DonAkerlow We would like to thank everyone who sent their wishes, prayers and comments through this extreme difficult time that our family is going through. We are living one day at a time with hope for tomorrow. Mary has been strong and resilent through all of this. She has a positive attitude and like I have said to her many times, Don’t let the Bastard win! God Bless You

Action Pool Tour Wilkie Downs Shuff Shaun Wilkie and Brandon Shuff were back at it on the weekend of May 14-15, battling for ranking supremacy on the Action Pool Tour. They, along with Eric Moore (the tour’s top three-ranked players), had missed the tour’s fourth stop in April, but all were on hand for this latest stop and all finishing among the top four. Wilkie went undefeated, downing Shuff twice - in the hot seat and finals - to claim the title. Reymart Lim kept Eric Moore from a third place finish. The event drew 43 entrants to Q Master Billiards in Virginia Beach, VA. In the early rounds (first through third), Wilkie was sending opponents to the loss side by an average score of 7-1 (7-0, 7-1, 7-2). In a winners’ side quarterfinal, Reymart Lim chalked up four against him, but Wilkie advanced to a winners’ side semifinal against Eric Moore. Shuff, in the meantime, had two relatively easy opening rounds (7-0, 7-1), but ran into a Battling Benji (no last name indicated), who forced a case game, won by Shuff, who advanced to a winners’ side semifinal against Greg Sabins. Shuff sent Sabins to the loss side 7-3, as Wilkie was downing Moore 7-2. In the hot seat match that followed, Shuff, like Lim before him, managed four racks against Wilkie, but moved to the semifinals. On the loss side, Sabins picked up Lim, who’d gotten by Chris Futrell 6-3 and survived a double hill battle versus RJ Carmona. Moore drew Dave Hunt, who’d eliminated Doug Hornsby, hill-hill and defeated Kenny Miller 6-3. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th/6th 7th/8th 9th-12th
Moore and Lim advanced to the quarterfinals, both 6-2, over Hunt and Sabins, respectively. Lim edged Moore out of advancement with a double hill win in those quarterfinals, before himself being eliminated 6-4 by Shuff. In something of a Virginia-centric Clash of Titans, Wilkie and Shuff went at it again with Wilkie completing his undefeated run with a 9-6 victory over Shuff.

CORR Beelines to the Hot Seat and the Win at MARKLEY BILLIARDS JPNEWT Tour Stop #2 took place the weekend of April 30, 2016 at Markley Billiards in Norrisown, PA. If you didn’t show up or tune ine via he live stream, then you missed quite a display of talent in the billiards realm. The Irish Invader, Karen Corr, conquered yet another field of tenacious contenders who were striving to reach the mountain top and take first place. This event was an NAPT Pro Event qualifier, meaning the highest placing qualified player will receive a paid entry into the NAPT event to be held the first weekend in June, at Breakers Sky Lounge in Herndon, VA. This tour stop drew 24 entrants and had $800 added by Markley Billiards.
As if there was any doubt, Karen Corr almost effortlessly made a beeline to the hot seat, defeating opponents Carol Clark (7-1), Colleen Shoop (7-4), Linda Shea (7-3), Jia Li (7-2), and Nicole Fleming (7-0). Fleming, who took second place, had an exceptional performance throughout the tournament and achieved what could quite possibly be a personal best for her since joining the tour. She first won a match that went hill-hill against Terri Stovall followed by a victory over Erica Testa (7-3). However, she was sent to the secondary bracket in the following match where Jia Li (who had just defeated Melissa Jenkins [7-1] and Meredith Lynch [7-6]) took the win with a score of 7-4. This led to Li and Corr battling for the hot seat, yielding a score of 7-2 in Corr’s favor. On the one-loss side, Joy McFeaters-Haas holds her own, taking victories over Belinda George and Nicole King, before gracefully bowing out due to a loss to Erica Testa. Meanwhile, Kathy Friend who was sent to the secondary bracket by Erica Testa, takes a victory over Kathleen Lawless (7-2), and moves on to play Kia Sidbury in a match that went double hill and ended in Friend’s favor. Sharon O’Hanlon defeats contenders Nicole Nester (7-2) and Melissa Jenkins (7-3) before her unfortunate draw of Colleen Shoop. Shoop, who was sent to the one-loss side by Karen Corr (7-4), landed in a match with Kathy Friend, who denied her access to continue on to the next round. Friend attempts to claim her fifth match win in

Fleming continues on, only to take out her next opponent, tournament director and former touring professional, Linda Shea (7-3). As a result, Fleming is presented with the opportunity for redemption when matched up with Jia Li once more, and takes advantage of it by winning the match (7-4). The official final showdown took place between Karen Corr and Nicole Fleming, rendering Karen a winning score of 7-0. Though Fleming offered excellent efforts to claim the victory, the Irish Invader was bulletproof and maintained exemplary focus in order to claim the title. The Tour wishes to thank Russ Urffer, room owner of Markley Billiards, for his and his staff’s hospitality and hosting this wonderful event. Also, greatly appreciated is

Let’s take a close look at how we line up our body with the shot. There are a number of very simple body alignments that can make it easier to shoot straight. If you’ve been playing a long time and are pretty good, you’re probably already doing most of them. This is worth a close look. If you’re off somewhere, making the change should make a difference for you. Look at any shot. As you stand behind the cueball, you can see “the line of the shot.” That’s the line the cueball must travel to hit the object ball or rail (or other target) precisely where you intend. How we choose that exact line is related to what we want to accomplish, our current ability level, and the various aiming adjustments we make to compensate for throw, english, squirt, etc. Choosing that line is not the issue here. The issue at hand is “What’s the best (simplest, most comfortable, most effective, most consistent, easy to remember, easy to check) way to arrange our body around the stick to produce a good, straight stroke and send the cueball down the line of the shot?” Our job as pool players is to produce a consistent, straight, fluid stroke that moves the cueball down the shot line at the right speed and with the right spin. What I’d like you to think about is making good use of your skeleton. We can simplify our job if we align our skeleton well. The better we align our skeleton, the less we have to rely on muscle and various swoops and on-the-fly stroke/aim adjustments. The point I want to drive home is that if we line up well, it’s way easier to hit what we’re aiming at, and to do it consistently and effortlessly. OK. We know where the line of the shot is. Now, imagine there is a vertical plane (a wall) running through that line. There are a bunch of body parts we’re going to align with that plane: • Bridge – This is obvious, but make sure your bridge is planted precisely, and is not pulling to one side or the other. • Grip – Again, obvious. Make sure your grip is as light as possible. The tighter you grip, the more you’ll tend to pull the stick off line during the stroke. • Stroke Arm – This is a big one. Your entire arm – forearm, elbow, upper arm, and shoulder should
Stroke
OnTheBreakNews.com
be in the vertical plane. Watch out for wrists curled in or out, elbow tucked in or flying out on the hit stroke. Have someone check you out from front and back. You might be off vertical a little, and not be able to see it or feel it yourself. • Aiming Eye – Obviously, you want to be able to see directly down the line of the shot. Don’t worry about which eye is dominant – just make sure you feel you are seeing straight down the line. Check to make sure your eyes are level. Many players (especially older ones) bend lower than their flexibility allows, so their head tilts a bit. • Chin – Try to get your chin directly over the stick. How can you get your eye and your chin over the stick, and keep your eyes level? Try turning your face (just a little) toward the appropriate side. Check yourself by lowering your chin to the stick once in a while. • Back Foot – The stick should generally run over the top of your back foot. If you find you can’t do that, or can’t get your eye over the cue, your foot placement might be the culprit. With your back foot angled forward a little, try moving the front foot forward a foot or so and out to the side a foot or so from where the back foot is. This will put you in a pretty neutral position. Adjust from there until you can see down the cue, and you feel balanced and comfortable. These are guidelines. Since everyone’s body is different, not everyone will find that all of these alignments are workable. Very tall, very short, and very heavy players usually need some adjustments. A good instructor can help with the adjustments. This approach is intended to get most players arranged into an alignment that makes it easier to see down the line and send the cueball down the line. These alignments can help you stroke more consistently and with less interference from muscle and from limbs that naturally want to move in some direction other than straight. As with any change in your fundamentals, you may experience a decline in your game for a while, but if the change is a good one and you stick with it, you’ll come back stronger. Let’s get straight – and get better.

THE GREAT ESCAPE 2
STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

I personally like this shot a lot and like most of the shots I prefer, it can come in handy in regular pool games. If we master how to approach the tips of the pockets, a new world of solutions will open up for us. Place the Cue Ball frozen to the long-rail jaw of the corner pocket, just like shown in the diagram. Surround it with 5-6 Obstacle Balls placed in a circle that roughly joins the 2 closest diamonds to that pocket. Place your Object Ball (the Yellow Ball in the diagram) by the opposite corner pocket. On a 9-foot table with regular size pockets as well as on 7-foot Diamond tables, you can use your regular, full length cue for this shot. On most 7-foot tables or on 9-foot tables with shimmed pockets, you may need to use your jump cue. A sharp aim is the major requirement to successfully and precisely jump out of this tough situation and pocket the OB at the same time. As you will notice, this time I used the lower diagram not only to show you where to hit the CB but also how to aim into the tip of the pocket. In this shot you need to have the tip of the opposite jaw at exactly 1/3 of the CB’s diameter. Then jack up your cue by 25⁰ circa and use a 2 o’clock and 2 tips of English on the CB, with a 2.5 speed stroke. I recommend using a close bridge for more control and accuracy and, most importantly, just poking the CB with a quick snap of your wrist, as you don’t really have any room to follow-through. The CB should jump off the tip of the pocket, over the Obstacle Balls and hit the first rail just above the side pocket in order to hit two more rails and pocket the OB in the corner. By using the same principle and slightly adjusting our aim, we can send the CB just about anywhere on the table. So start practicing right away to impress your friends and beat your opponents.

Close Approach
At the start of a first lesson with a new student, the first thing I do is size up their basic ability and look for obvious problems. You might think I could just ask them, but pool players for the most part seem unable to see their own weaknesses. In that regard, they’re pretty much like all people. Anyway, a recent student was doing fairly well with the preliminary shots until we got to the follow shot in the diagram. The goal is to pocket the 1 ball and follow down to the end rail, leaving the cue ball within a diamond of the cushion. When I watched from pocket P with my head just above the pocket, everything looked pretty good: straight cue movement, head over the shot and still, and a nice even swing, very little body movement. But the student was having a real hard time getting the cue ball down to the cushion. Even with a firm stroke the cue ball would sometimes drift forward only a foot or two. This lack of cue ball action with good stick speed can only happen on this shot if the tip is not hitting the cue ball high enough. To see how high the student was hitting the ball, I moved to S to see the height of the tip on the cue ball. The problem was visible immediately -- more accurately, I couldn’t see where the student was going to hit the ball and neither could he. When the student was done with his warm-up strokes and about to take the final back stroke and power stroke, he stopped the cue at the point shown in the diagram, back from the ball maybe three or four inches. In fact the warm-ups never got any closer than that. From that far back, the spot the tip is going to hit on the cue ball is just guess work. In order to achieve accuracy in position play, you need to control within the thickness of a dime where the tip hits the ball because that is going to determine how much spin you put on the cue ball. The easy way to see where the tip will hit the ball is to bring the tip up to the ball at the end of your warm-ups and stop it within a quarter-inch of the ball. Then if you bring the stick straight back and straight through on the power stroke the tip ends where it began and you have excellent control over your spin. A second benefit is that the final stroke is a lot more like your warm-up strokes if you don’t have to add an extra three inches to the motion. Here’s a practice for you. See if you can shoot the shot as shown and follow to within six inches of the end rail five times in a row. Notice that the cue ball is a little less than a diamond from the object ball. Try the draw shot as well to leave the cue

ball within a diamond of the other end rail. If you have trouble with consistency on these shots, you may have an approach problem. Have a friend stand at S and tell you when you are in “ready” position how many quarter inches (or tip thicknesses) the tip is from the cue ball. Work to get that down to no more than a half-inch of clearance. If you have no friends handy, and your depth perception is lacking as well, get a small mirror and stand it on it’s side at M to let you see from the side while you’re in position. I found a small mirror with a protective plastic rim in the cosmetics department that is perfect for the job. When it comes to accurate English, you want to be close to your work.

Fuel for Battle: The first thing that you 1. need to consider is eating a healthy meal. You also need to drink plenty of water—it has been proven that being dehydrated lowers your ability to perform well, and if you’re thirsty, it’s time to give your body what it’s asking for. It is also important to eat the right amount of food. You don’t want to be hungry, but you don’t want to be too full either. You should eat foods that are healthy for you. Snacks like apples, bananas, or nuts will help maintain positive energy levels. Warm-Up Mentally: As you are driving 2. to the poolroom, play through a match in your mind and imagine running out. Don’t start thinking about the score; just imagine what it feels like to play a positive game of pool where you put a good stroke on each and every shot. The idea is to “ingrain” positive images into your subconscious, which will give you a better chance of making those images into a reality when you play. Follow a Consistent Routine: Watch 3. any of the top professionals and their pre-match routines. They always prepare for success and you need to as well. I strongly recommend following the same plan over and over. If it takes you fifteen minutes to warm up, be sure to get to the table early so that you can get yourself in stroke. 4. Warm-Up with Easy Shots: Simple shots struck with a medium speed are a great way to start coordinating both your physical and mental abilities. Always remember to visualize what you plan to do and try to start developing a feel for your surroundings. One of your primary goals during warm-up should be to develop positive feelings. 5. Develop a “Feel” for the Table: As you warm up with simple shots, try to play as many different shots as you can from a variety of cut angles. This will help you develop positive feelings as you start to get your creative juices flowing. This will also help you get
www.facebook.com/onthebreaknews
familiar with the speed of the table. 6. No Mechanical Thoughts: Resist your temptation to start thinking about stroke mechanics. You need to start playing, and that involves visualizing shots and trusting in your stroke. Honestly, there’s no correlation between your warm-up and how you are going to finish. 7. other thing that you need to do is practice the pre-shot routine that you’ll be using before each and every shot. This sets a solid foundation for a high-quality performance and is the only thing you can completely control while you are at the table. A good pre-shot routine also gives you something to focus on other than external distractions. Have a 8. Positive Attitude: This component requires for you to have fun and enjoy yourself. Tell yourself that you’re going to love playing no matter how well you play After all, pool isn’t your profession. If you don’t have to win in order to pay your bills, there really shouldn’t be any pressure on how you perform. 9. No Expectations: No matter how well you might have been playing, you must understand that sometimes it’s just not meant to be. The balls are loyal to no one and sometimes they just won’t let you win. 10. Focus on the Process: The fact that you have no idea what’s going to happen during your next match is actually pretty exciting. The only real thing within your control is the process of putting a good stroke on the cue ball time after time. Following your pre-shot routine should be one of your primary goals for match play. Following a strict process will distract you from things that could negatively impact your performance.

We start off with sad news as we lost Witny Michel on December 9, 2015, he was 30 years old. Witny loved the game and played BCA and APA. Those that knew him enjoyed hearing him laugh and his smile was contagious. He loved playing pool and we all will miss him. To honor our friend, we held an 8-Ball Memory Pool Tournament on January 9, 2016 at Lucky 7 (4850 State Road 7, Davie, FL). 32 players came out in support of this tour. $100 will go to a charity per request of Witny’s family. Results: 1St Place – Francisco Diaz = $180 2nd Place – BA Autry = $130 3rd Place – Allen Dawson = $80

MIDWEST BILLIARDS & CUE EXPO ROARING SUCCESS!!! Big Dog Billiards in Des Moines, IA hosted their annual extravaganza and, as usual, it was a huge success. In addition to the Cue Expo, there were four events ñ the One Pocket Championship, the Bigfoot 10-Ball Challenge, Open 9-Ball and a Banks Ring Game. For one pocket aficionados, the star-studded lineup couldn’t get much better. A very tough field of fourteen arrived and ready to rumble. After losing his first match 5-0 to Josh Roberts - last year’s runner-up & 2014 champ - Alex Pagulyan tore up the west side of the chart. After eliminating last year’s champ, Scott Frost, he proceeded to eject Jesse Bowman, Corey Deuel, Shane Van Boening, Jeremy Jones and Francisco Bustamante to reach the final.

A big thank you to Ray Hansen, Scott Rabon, and Justin Schwarz of Pool Action TV! Ray and his team did a great job running the pro tournaments, and Scott Rabon did a fantastic job MC’ing the By-the-Rail Banks Ring Game! Special thanks to Jeremy Jones and Scott Frost for their commentary during the pro tournaments! We hope all of the viewers at home enjoyed the show! Eric Gardner, graphics designer, is the best in the business! He designed all the many magnificent versions of the flyers, posters, banners, business cards and teaser graphics for the Midwest Billiards and Cue Expo! If you ever need graphics produced, Eric Gardner is man for the job! Thank you Eric, for a job well done! We have already begun the planning process for next year’s 2017 Midwest Billiards & Cue Expo, which will be even bigger and better than this year’s stellar event. We hope to see everyone here again next year! Thanks again everyone! James Landrum, Randy Hanson, and Jon Brown, Big Dog Billiards
While Alex was fighting to stay alive, Dennis Orcollo arrived at the final match unscathed after defeating Scott Frost, Josh Roberts, Shane Van Boening & Francisco Bustamante. Since this event was true double elimination, he would have to be beaten twice. Dennis won the lag and quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the final race to 5. It looked like it might be the end of the road for Alex. He had been battling back problems throughout the entire event but he hadn’t come all the way through the loser’s bracket to go down like this… Roaring back, the Lion dug deep and staged a comeback. Fans were treated to some top notch one pocket as both displayed the skills that had propelled them through the stellar field. When the smoke cleared, Alex prevailed 5-3 - forcing a second set. Apparently, neither one wanted to take even a short break as they immediately lagged for the break. This time, however, it was all Alex taking Dennis down with a 5-0 win for the title. Saturday night was for the bank fans. A field of eight competed in the Banks Ring Game. After several hours, Sky Woodward and Jeremy Jones were the last two standing. Sky was almost down to the felt when he came back to win. Fourteen players competed in the single elimination Bigfoot event on the ten-foot Diamond. Again, Alex and Dennis emerged in the final four as each was to play a couple of newcomers. It looked like it might be a rematch of the one pocket final! Dennis defeated Sharik Sayed to advance to the finals but Alex was forced to withdraw from the event citing back problems. His opponent, Cam Salim, advanced to the finals. Playing perfectly, Cam jumped out to an early lead. An uncharacteristic miss let Dennis back in the match and soon it was a horse race. Dennis pulled ahead at the end of the match and on the hill at 10-8, he hung the combination on the final 10-ball! Cam leapt out of his seat and pocketed the carom. However, a Cinderella story was not to be as Dennis closed out the match at 11-9. There were 197 players in the bar table event. Robb Saez emerged undefeated and faced Sharik Sayed in the finals. Sharik won the first set forcing a second but this time, Robb prevailed. Congratulations to Alex, Dennis, Sky & Robb for becoming the 2016 Big Dog champions! Many thanks to Jim Landrum and Randy Hanson, owners of Big Dog Billiards, for hosting such a great event. It wouldn’t have been possible without the sponsors - Pat Diveney of Diveney Cues, Evan Clarke of Segen Cues, Dave Jacoby of Jacoby Cues, Ivan Lee of Iwan Simonis/Aramith, Greg Sullivan of Diamond Billiard Products, C. Success at Inaugural Illinois Junior State 10-Ball Championships Story by David Carr. Photos Courtesy of Roger Garnsey
On April 2-3, 44 youth billiard student-athletes representing Illinois, Missouri and Iowa made their appearance at Starship Billiards in Decatur, IL for a funfilled weekend of pool at the first ever Illinois Junior State 10-Ball Championships. In the 14 and Under Girls, Sarah Tate finished in 1st place and received a paid entry to the Nationals, a trophy and a new cue. Christian Kogel won a paid entry and a 2nd place trophy. The 18 and Under Girls division saw Serena Black go undefeated all day to beat Katelin Ballou in a spirited finals match. Katlin Schilling, who had two “nail-biter” hill/hill matches against the eventual 1st and 2nd place winners, finished 3rd and Megan Thomas was 4th. Both Serena and Katlin Schilling had previously earned paid entries, so a paid entry went to Katelin Ballou and Megan Thomas also received the paid entry to the Nationals.
ably the most exciting match of a long tournament day. Quality pool events like this State Championship always rest on the backs of sponsors and volunteers. Special thanks are due to the 2 primary sponsors, Starship Billiards and Kim Jones, Central Illinois APA Leagues as well as a large number of folks who volunteered their time and experience. Among them were Jerry Brown who served as Tournament Director, Tom Fankhauser, a nationally qualified referee who was the Chief Referee, Leslie and Mike Adams, Terry Beer, Heather Hunter, Bill Pickerill, also a super pool enthusiast locally who has been instrumental in all things billiard, especially those youth-related ones, a number of junior players and others. A special thanks also to Roger Garnsey, who shared freely of his time and advice throughout the event. Special Thanks to Mike McKuin, Eugene Mullins and the staff at Smokin’ Aces BBQ.
In the 14 and Under Boys, Koty Lovell finished a very strong day’s performance with a win over Keith McKuin to secure a paid entry to the Nationals, a 1st place trophy and new cue. By virtue of Keith McKuin’s prior qualification, the paid entry was awarded to 3rd place finisher, Joey Tate.

MAKE IT HAPPEN 1-POCKET INVITATIONAL The FINALS Efren Reyes 4 – Shane Van Boening 3 In the tune up match on Sunday afternoon Reyes foreshadowed the finals to come when he ran eight and out in beating Van Boening and evening their records in this event at 4-1. As a result, there would be no ties – the winner of the Make It Happen Invitational would be the player with the best record. GAME 1 The match opened with Van Boening scratching on his break, but he did not leave Reyes with a shot. After Van Boening hung a bank, Reyes kicked it in, erasing Van Boening’s foul. Reyes then fouled but Van Boening sold out and Reyes made a ball – so after several innings they were both scoreless. Van Boening ran two and, after Reyes missed a bank, he ran six and out to win game one. GAME 2 Van Boening sold out and Reyes ran four balls. Reyes then played an intentional foul and Van Boening fouled as well, so the score was now 3 to -1 in Reyes’ favor. Reyes made a bank into a double carom (!) and ran five and out to even the match at 1-1. GAME 3 Van Boening blundered with a scratch and Reyes ran four, made a combo/carom, and then completed his run of eight and out. GAME 4 Van Boening left Reyes with a combo and Reyes made it to take a 1-0 lead. Van Boening then left Reyes with another combo and he made it, igniting a run of seven and out to win the game, 8 to -1. Reyes now led in the match 3 games to 1. GAME 5 Van Boening made a combo, but was a bit unlucky as he had no other shot. Reyes made a ball for Van Boening and jawed a ball in his own pocket. Reyes later made that ball to trail in the game, 2 to 1. Reyes then sold out on a safety and Van Boening ran two balls. Reyes replied with a bank, but then missed badly and Van Boening ran four and out to win the game, 8-2. He now was behind in the match,

3-2. GAME 6 Van Boening made a ball for Reyes, then in a subsequent turn he left Reyes with a shot and Efren ran four before hanging up a ball. Van Boening made that ball for Reyes, who was now ahead, 6-0. After Van Boening left Reyes with a shot, he made it, but then passed on a long shot that could have won the game, and the momentum changed. Van Boening opened his six ball run with a long rail bank, a long stop shot, and another bank. After Reyes left a ball near his own pocket, Van Boening made a super crossover bank to tie the score at 7-7. Van Boening left a ball near his pocket and he made it to win the game after Reyes’ takeout had left him with a shot. The match was now tied at three games each. GAME 7 Reyes took an intentional foul, but Van Boening left him with a shot and he ran four to take a 3-0 lead. Reyes was provided with another offensive opportunity and he took full advantage of it, running five and out to win the game, 8-0, and the title. sReyes, 61, had beaten Van Boening, 32, who is arguably the best player in the world, in the game that Reyes is undisputedly the best ever. As a measure of Reyes’ firepower, nine of his 21 games won ended with long runs of 7 (3 times) and 8 (6 times), underscoring his skill at the game’s strongest move – running lots of balls! LIDIO “RASTA” RAMIREZ and LEE KANG
Undefe
In the hot seat match, Ramirez took on newcomer Andrzrej Kaldan. Kaldan had a dominating run through the lower bracket, which included several convincing wins: Steve Kalloo (7-3), Alison Fischer (7-3), Lukas FracassoVerner (7-3), and Jimy Cardona (7-4). However, Ramirez put Kaldan’s winning streak to an end, taking the match 8-5.
L-R: Jorge Rodriguez, Tony Robles, & Lee Kang Story by Alison Fischer At Predator Pro/Am Tour’s ninth stop of the 2016 season, “A+” rated tour veteran Lidio “Rasta” Ramirez returned to the top to score his first win of the year. Ramirez proved to be unstoppable, going undefeated through the two-day event. This event was held at Raxx Pool Room, Bar & Grill on May 21-22, with “Upstate Al” Leon of AZBtv on-hand to host the free live stream of feature matches throughout the weekend. On his way to the top, Ramirez took down a list of formidable foes that included Elvis Rodriguez (7-6), Nigel Francis (7-4), and Juan Guzman (7-6). On the second day, Ramirez faced another tough opponent as he paired up against the other undefeated player remaining in the upper bracket – former tour winner and 2015 “B+” Player of the Year Annie Flores. In their match, Ramirez took a decisive 7-4 victory over Flores to move on to the winner’s bracket final.
In the battle for redemption on the loss side of the bracket, recent “Second Chance” winner Pablo Sanz (B) was leading the way through the lower half of the bracket. After losing to Kaldan, Sanz picked up wins over Nicole Monaco (7-5), Chickie Romero (7-2), and Jimy Cardona (7-6) to land in the quarterfinal. Also on the loss side, Annie Flores recovered from her defeat against Ramirez, soundly beating Manny Stamatakis 7-2. Stamatakis, who was recently raised from an “A” to an “A+”, had a strong showing at Raxx, winning seven straight matches on the loss side to finish in 5th/6th place. Following her win over Stamatakis, Flores took on Sanz in the quarterfinal, but fell short in this match, settling for fourth place. Moving on to the semifinal, Sanz faced off against Kaldan in a rematch from the winner’s bracket. Sanz avenged his previous loss by shutting out Kaldan (7-0) to earn a spot in the finals against Ramirez. In their match for the title, Sanz was spotted three games on the wire in a race to eight. The “modified” single race format for the final meant that if Ramirez got to eight first, he would win outright; if not, the set would extend to ten. The final race between Sanz and Ramirez was closely contested, but in the end, Ramirez sealed the match win with a score of 8-7 to take the title.

at Predator Pro/Am Tour Stop #9 at Raxx
feated
On day two of Predator Pro/Am Tour Stop 9 at Raxx, the big guns came out to play in the Pro 10-Ball event. In this tournament, one of the tour’s rising stars, Lee Kang, was in the spotlight. Lee, who is a student from Korea now based in Queens, made his mark at Raxx with an undefeated showing. To start out the event, Lee took down Steve Wright and Raxx owner Holden Chin (both 7-3) before going toe-to-toe with New York legend Frankie Hernandez where he escaped with a 7-6 win. Lee’s next challenger was Predator Pro/Am Tour founder Tony Robles, who had just come away with a 7-2 win over 2015 Empire State Champion Jorge Rodriguez. The match between Lee and Robles would determine who moved on with a guaranteed place in the final, and it was no contest—as Lee put down a 7-3 win. While Robles waited to play the semifinal, the players remaining in the loss bracket were in battle to get their chance at him. In the “final four” match-ups, both Jorge Rodriguez and Frankie Hernandez scored 7-4 wins over Zion Zvi and Del Sim, respectively, to move onto the quarterfinal. In that match, Rodriguez shot down Hernandez 7-5 to land in the semifinal against Robles. Mon - Thurs : 5pm - 1am Fri - Sat: Noon - 2am Sun: Noon - 1am

2016 Ginky Memorial at Steinway Billiards
From Tony Robles on Facebook: Hanging out with three of my brothers Mika, I Alan & Zion and am very proud of them for making it to the final 3 of the 2016 Ginky Memorial at Steinway Billiards! You three had a great event and I’m sure that Ginky will be watching the final between Zion & Mika with a smile from up above! Live stream for the Pro final will be provided by UpState AL of AZBTV immediately following the final of the Amateur event between Tony Liang & Edwin Guzman. Congrats to all the top finishers for both events and special thanks to Steinway Billiards for making this event bigger and better than ever with 240 players this year!
Brett Wins at League Room
Another great tournament! We had 32 players from all over. We started the Calcutta on time and ran all 32 players through to the end in 12 hours including the Calcutta. The bounty was paid to Lee Brett and Tri Hinton. Congratulations to Lee Brett on the win, Shannon Murphy came in second, Jerry Hager, third and Nija Conley came in fourth. We apologize for the AC debacle and defiantly will have that fixed long before the next monthly tournament, the end of June. It was nice to see so many faces and we were excited to make some new friends. We look forward to seeing everyone again soon
