The Genesis of Free 2 Be Wild

Nestled amidst the vibrant savannah hills and forests of Burnside, Bulawayo, the Free 2 Be Wild Wildlife Sanctuary (FTBW) quietly marks a milestone achievement: 10 years of providing a haven for animals in need. Celebrations to mark the anniversary include the release of a troop of 15 rescued baboons, cared for at FTBW, back into the wild in collaboration with Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife. From a dream born in the heart of a passionate individual, (founder and director Baye Pigors) to a thriving sanctuary teeming with life, the journey has been paved with dedication, resilience, and unwavering love for the wild. Baye founded FTBW in 2014 at the age of 22, and over the years the centre has released over 500 other rescued animals back into the wild. To date, the centre has saved the lives of hundreds of animals, educated thousands of mainly young school-going children, and provided space for volunteers to learn, and for local and international visitors seeking for that special and close-knit interaction with wildlife under rehabilitation. “We are the first primate rehabilitation centre to be oriented specifically to the rehab and release of African primates. The success rate of primate releases in Southern Africa – carried out by qualified operators – is an admirable 97%,” she said.

The story of FTBW begins with Baye Pigors, a former tour guide whose life intertwined with animals from a young age. Witnessing firsthand the plight of injured, orphaned, and illegally kept wildlife ignited a spark within them. The dream of creating a sanctuary, a space where these animals could receive care, recover, and potentially return to the wild, blossomed. Fuelled by unwavering determination and a growing network of supporters, Baye embarked on a mission to make the dream a reality. In 2013, amidst challenges and bureaucratic hurdles, FTBW opened its doors, welcoming its first residents: a pair of orphaned owlets in addition to Umfazi, the orphaned boon. The organisation was later officially registered in 2014.

Humble Beginnings The initial years were marked by tireless efforts. With limited resources and a dedicated team of volunteers, the sanctuary slowly expanded its infrastructure, building enclosures, acquiring medical equipment, and fostering partnerships with veterinarians and wildlife experts. Each rescued animal brought its own unique story, requiring specialized care and rehabilitation tailored to their specific needs. Over time, FTBW transformed into a haven for a diverse array of wildlife. From majestic birds of prey soaring through the sky to playful primates swinging through the trees, the

sanctuary became a vibrant tapestry of life. Each resident arrived with a distinct history: orphaned cubs separated from their mothers, confiscated animals from illegal trade, and injured creatures nursed back to health. Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Release The core mission of FTBW has always been threefold: rescue, rehabilitation, and release. Rescuing animals from a variety of situations, including poaching, illegal pet trade, and habitat loss, forms the first crucial step. The sanctuary provides immediate care, addressing injuries, malnutrition, and psychological trauma.

The rehabilitation process is often lengthy and painstaking. Dedicated staff, veterinarians, and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure each animal receives the necessary medical attention, nutritional support, and speciesspecific enrichment. The ultimate goal, however, remains to release animals back into their natural habitats, allowing them to reclaim their wild independence. “The joy of witnessing a rehabilitated animal soar back into the sky, scamper back into the forest, or return to the ocean is unparalleled. Each release serves as a testament to the dedication and expertise of the team, and a beacon of hope for the future of wildlife conservation,” said the founder of the sanctuary. Educating and Inspiring FTBW’s impact extends beyond direct animal care. The sanctuary serves as an educational hub, raising awareness about the threats faced by wildlife, the importance of conservation, and the individual efforts that can make a difference. Educational programs, volunteer opportunities, and community outreach initiatives connect people with the wonders of the animal kingdom and empower them to become advocates for change. The centre is actively changing the perception of primates from being considered nuisances to being recognized as valuable contributors to ecosystems. Their efforts in education include a school program that teaches children about the significance of primates and how to coexist with them. Additionally, they plan to extend their impact by launching a program for villages affected by primate crop raiding, focusing on finding sustainable solutions to mitigate conflicts and protect both the livelihoods of the villagers and the primates. The sanctuary is making a significant impact by providing a haven for injured, orphaned, and confiscated animals and birds. This is crucial at a time when wildlife species, including the critically endangered pangolin, are facing a rapid decline and need a second chance to thrive in their natural habitats. Milestones As FTBW celebrates its tenth anniversary, it reflects on a decade of remarkable achievements. Thousands of animals have received care and a second chance at life. Countless individuals have been touched by the sanctuary’s mission, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for wildlife. Throughout their journey, FTBW has collaborated with numerous organizations, including Nikela, people who help conservationists, which was established by the dynamic duo of Margrit and Russ Harris. The Harris couple’s invaluable support in spreading awareness about the sanctuary, their generous donations, and their assistance in facilitating releases have left a lasting impact on its work. In 2021, the organisation made a significant accomplishment by partnering with Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife to release a troop of rescued vervets into a national park in Zimbabwe. This release marked a historic event, as it was the first recorded troop reintroduction in Zimbabwe since the 1970s when a troop of monkeys was released onto an island in Kariba. Under the authority of Zimparks, FTBW is a recognized organization with the responsibility of rescuing, rehabilitating, releasing orphaned animals, and providing care for injured wildlife. In her mission to provide a home for and to rehabilitate suffering primates and other wildlife species, Baye duly received the coveted ‘Unsung Conservation Hero’s Award 2016’ from by Africa Geographic. 11

“However, the journey is far from over. The threats to wildlife persist, and the need for rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation remains critical. The centre continues to strive for a future where all animals can thrive in their natural habitats, free from exploitation and harm,” notes Baye. Ride T he Bamba

TRAM FOR AN AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCE Text by Martin Chemhere

The authentically styled 19th-century tram service, now known as the Bamba Tram, is the one transport mode every tourist to Victoria Falls should try. The tram is a new introduction (April 2022) following the discontinuation of a similar initiative on the same route. It is part of the Bamba Group, comprising two other entities, Bamba Bus and Bamba Bike, both innovative and exciting transport options in the resort city.

A ride on the tram is an opportunity for the tourist to experience the magic of Victoria Falls and the Zambezi National Park in a unique way. The old-world-style tram takes tourists on memorable tours over the famous Victoria Falls Bridge for unforgettable views and wildlife encounters.

All trips originate at The Three Monkeys, a signature restaurant near the Victoria Falls Railway Station.

Guests are required to be at the tram at least 10 minutes before departure, to allow for enough time for check-in. Transfers are not included, so you’ll need to make your way there. Since its launch, the Bamba Tram has changed the face of tourism and creatively improved modes of transport in the resort town. centre of Hwange National Park are captivating to behold. The construction of the complex at Hwange’s main entrance gate received the green light from Zimbabwe’s Minister for Environment, Climate, and Wildlife, Mangaliso

Ndlovu. It is the latest activity in the 25-year partnership between ZimParks and IFAW to support wildlife conservation in Hwange National Park, home to 45,000 elephants and other critical biodiversity.

Expected to be completed in June 2024, the mixed-use development features a shop that offers traditional and locally crafted items, as well as a visitor centre where the Hwange culture can be exhibited and promoted. It also contains an educational museum, a library, and a computer room for local youth. All of these elements are designed to create a space for heritage tourism and to teach visitors about the history and culture of the area.

Hwange National Park is part of the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA), the world’s largest trans-frontier conservation area, established to promote conservation and tourism development.

Speaking at an event to officially launch the project, Hon. Mangaliso Ndlovu, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Environment, Climate, and Wildlife, said the complex would significantly improve the visitor experience at Zimbabwe’s flagship park. “This new complex will greatly increase the visibility of Hwange National Park, improve the visitor experience, enhance security and help reposition the park as a competitive and must-visit destination,” said Ndlovu. Since 2019, the ZimParks-IFAW conservation partnership has concentrated on improving park infrastructure, uplifting community livelihoods, strengthening law enforcement, and developing tourism. “IFAW’s long-term partnership with ZimParks is to transform Hwange NP into a well-managed and well-protected park that can serve as a haven for wildlife and an economic engine for Zimbabwe,” says Alleta Nyahuye, IFAW’s Director for Zimbabwe. “As we forge ahead with this important mission of restoring Hwange NP to its former glory, we are excited about the journey ahead and remain optimistic that our interventions will contribute to the recovery and growth of Zimbabwe’s tourism sector.” Earlier this year, the partnership between IFAW and ZimParks was extended for 25 years, with an expected investment of USD 50 million. The new complex will serve as a high-security checkpoint with smart-camera technology systems to fortify efforts to prevent the illegal trafficking of wildlife products. One of the better-known hotels in the Eastern Highlands has reopened its doors to travellers in time for the festive season. The iconic Brondesbury Park Hotel is back in operation after reopening to the public in September.

The hotel had stopped operations for more than 20 years and its recent refurbishment will allow management the opportunity to roll back the years when it was popular with tourists.

The new-look hotel will certainly resonate with many people who have known it in the old days as a great holiday destination. In a tweet, the Brondesbury Park Hotel management thanked ZTA for leading Sanganai buyers who visited and had lunch during their Eastern Highlands tour.

They were accompanied by a group of international travel agents who were in the country for the recently held Sanganai Travel Expo.

The 38-roomed hotel is a traveller’s paradise that features all the modern amenities including all ensuite with shower over bath, four conference rooms, a cocktail bar, a la carte restaurant, free WI-FI, tea station and more.

Overlooking the majestic and mystic steeped Nyanga Mountain range, the newly refurbished hotel is expected to add more bed capacity to the Zimbabwean hospitality sector while generally boosting the growth of the hotel industry. Nyasha Makanza is the manager of the hotel which is under the management of Red Apple Hotels, a hospitality group overseeing several operations around the country. The Brondesbury Hotel occupies 22 hectares, six thousand feet up in the rolling peaceful foothills of the scenic and vast Nyanga Mountains. Stanford Derere

Several individual stone sculptors have contributed to the development of the art form, and among them the name Stanford Derere deserves mention. A master at sculpting birds in abstract shapes, characterised by spread-out wings, he has made a name at home and outside. Born in 1956 at Chapeyama Village in Makosa, Mutoko, in a family of eight boys, he used to spend a lot of time playing with clay as a kid, triggering his early interest in art. That early exposure was carried over to primary school, where he concentrated more on sketching. He says that this was during the comic book era and he was

getting more interested in drawing and painting. Receiving the Certificate of Excellence in 1988 for the piece ‘The Beekeeper’, demonstrated his understanding of the sculpture genre and showcased his artistic genius in his formative years as an artist. His sculptural depictions concentrate on birds, particularly swifts, in various stages of flight. The sculptures are a viewer’s marvel, especially with the birds in amazing motion, sometimes perched or on the ground. With deliberately little surface detail, his sculptures are assemblages of stone,

wood and metal delicately and masterly balanced. Of the three mediums, stone is dominant. His ability to showcase birds in all manner of motion brings an element of surprise to his sculptures. He has observed the movements since childhood in his village back home, and he continues to bring to the world what he knows best. In a world where wildlife is increasingly going extinct, his oeuvre of birds is an ode to enlightenment and conservation. Derere honed his artistic skills at the famed BAT Workshop, part of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. There, he was introduced to and experimented with a variety of materials in sculpture-making stone, metal and wood. Before joining the BAT Workshop, Stanford attended Peter Birch School of Art but unfortunately stopped midway due to financial constraints. At Peter Birch, he specialised in painting and printmaking, before trying out the sculpture genre. Practising stone sculpture for more than 40 years has seen him become one of the few elders and living legends of the stone sculpture movement.

I can’t help but smile when I think of my first road trips through Southern Africa. Packed into the truck, we’d hastily embark on dusty gravel roads, venturing deep into the bush with nothing more than a packed cool box and a bag full of biltong. While this important gathering will take

The latest Economic Impact Research from the global tourism body reveals a staggering ten year forecast for Africa’s travel and tourism sector. In May 2024, visitors to the 200-square-kilometre Sango Private Game Reserve in Zimbabwe will have the opportunity to stay in a new luxury tented camp called Sango Dadiso Camp. The camp is comprised of four luxurious tents, three guides’ tents, a tent equipped with a gym and spa, a spacious dining tent, a swimming pool, and a barbecue area with an open pizza oven. Guests staying in the tents can enjoy the amenities of an ensuite bathroom, including a tub and outdoor shower, as well as a private balcony. The dining tent, which has been designed to offer excellent views of the wildlife, also features a plunge pool that overlooks a waterhole located across a river bed that changes with the seasons. We Are Victoria Falls and Cape Town launch joint campaign

Text by Martin Chemhere We Are Victoria Falls and Cape Town Tourism towards the end of last year launched a collaborative campaign called “Wonder2Wonder” to promote the two cities and their iconic natural wonders - Victoria Falls and Table Mountain. Earlier last year, the two destination management organisations signed a cooperation agreement in Victoria Falls, setting the stage for forward-thinking collaboration between African destinations. In the first cross-border partnership

of its kind in Southern Africa, the two destinations launched a joint marketing partnership at the end of October 2023. ‘Wonder to Wonder is a celebration of our two world wonders, and a call-out to our shared markets that a trip to Southern Africa should include both’ said Winnie Muchanyuka, CEO of Zimbabwe Tourism Authority. ‘The campaign features exciting imagery of our two destinations, with a focus on adventure to appeal to active,

multi-generational and younger markets.’ The campaign will run for 6 weeks and is being promoted by We Are Victoria Falls and Cape Town Tourism, as well as partners in both destinations and the travel trade, including Trailfinders UK. ‘We want everyone to get behind it’, said Executive Director of We Are Victoria Falls, Mr Ngqabutho Moyo. ‘We are trying something new here, and we believe this is a great opportunity for our city, and our tourism industry.’ 53
