The upcoming Zimbabwe-Zambia Energy Projects Summit, set for November 18-20, 2024, in Victoria Falls, represents a crucial turning point for energy investment in Southern Africa. This event is not just about meetings and discussions; it’s about laying the groundwork for a sustainable and prosperous energy future for both nations and the broader Southern African region.

For Edington Mazambani, the Chief Executive Officer of the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA), this summit arrives at a pivotal moment.

It offers Zimbabwe and Zambia an unparalleled opportunity to unlock significant investment potential in their energy sectors, especially as the world shifts away from fossil fuels toward more sustainable alternatives. The timing is particularly relevant as the region grapples with energy shortages exacerbated by drought conditions that have severely impacted hydropower capacity at Lake Kariba, a shared resource between the two nations.

The summit provides a platform for key industry players, policymakers, and international investors to explore opportunities, forge new partnerships, and find innovative solutions to the region’s energy challenges.

Zimbabwe's recent economic strides since the inception of the Second Republic further enhance the importance of this event, as the country works towards achieving its ambitious goal of becoming an upper-middle-income society by 2030.

Central to this vision is energy—seen not just as a necessity but as a catalyst for sustainable development.

The emphasis on attracting investment in renewable energy forms, such as solar and wind, aligns perfectly with global trends in transitioning to cleaner power sources.

Why is this moment particularly crucial for Zimbabwe and Zambia?

The answer lies in the region’s ongoing energy deficit. While there have been instances of excess power in pockets, the situation has worsened, largely due to El Niño’s adverse effects on water levels at Lake Kariba, the region's hydropower backbone. Capacity has dropped drastically from 1,050 megawatts to less than 200 megawatts per day, a significant shortfall for countries already stretched thin in terms of energy resources.

With mining, manufacturing, and agriculture driving the demand for power higher, it's clear that renewables must play a more prominent role in Zimbabwe and Zambia's energy mix.

Renewable energy sources like solar and wind are seen as essential not only for their environmental benefits but for their ability to offer resilience in the face of climate-related disruptions. The summit will facilitate discussions on how best to pivot towards these energy solutions and, most importantly, how to secure the necessary investment to make this transition successful.

Looking forward, the next decade promises to be transformative for Zimbabwe’s energy landscape. Positioned strategically within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Zimbabwe aims to become a regional energy hub, facilitating grid connectivity across the region.

The country’s central location is a critical asset, but it also brings a responsibility: Zimbabwe must modernise its electricity grid to avoid becoming a bottleneck in the region’s power distribution.

One of the most exciting prospects on the horizon is the Batoka Gorge Hydropower Project, a joint initiative between Zimbabwe and Zambia, set to generate 2,400 megawatts of power, to be shared equally between the two countries.

This project is expected to significantly enhance energy security while creating jobs and boosting economic growth. In addition, Zimbabwe’s rich lithium deposits position the country as a future hub for battery storage manufacturing, a crucial component of the renewable energy ecosystem.

Moreover, the discovery of natural gas reserves in northern Zimbabwe opens up new opportunities for gasto-electricity projects, particularly in rural areas where communities have historically relied on firewood for their energy needs.

These developments not only promise to transform the country’s energy sector but also provide a clear pathway toward meeting Zimbabwe's commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, particularly universal access to modern energy services by 2030.

From a regulatory perspective, ZERA has been proactive in encouraging new investors to enter the market. Initiatives such as tax holidays for renewable energy projects, lower corporate tax rates, and the granting of National Project Status have already attracted significant local and international interest.

Furthermore, the introduction of offgrid tariff-setting tools, developed in collaboration with the African Forum for Utility Regulators, aims to make rural electrification via mini-grids a more attractive investment opportunity.

The historical and geographical connection between Zimbabwe and Zambia plays a significant role in their energy collaboration. The two nations, which once formed part of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, continue to share the Kariba Dam’s hydroelectric power, split evenly between them. Both countries also belong to the Southern African Development Community, with Zimbabwe, in particular, serving as a vital energy corridor for the region.

As the world shifts its focus to sustainable energy solutions, the Zimbabwe-Zambia Energy Projects Summit serves as a beacon of opportunity. With energy shortages threatening economic growth, now is the time for Zimbabwe and Zambia to take decisive steps to secure their energy futures. This summit provides the ideal platform for doing just that, bringing together global investors and regional stakeholders to forge partnerships that will power the region’s growth for years to come.

For ZERA and its counterparts in Zambia, the excitement lies in the prospect of matching international investors with local energy opportunities, facilitating dialogue that could lead to tangible projects in renewables, grid modernization, and enhanced energy access. The summit is not just a gathering—it’s the starting point for a sustainable, prosperous energy future for Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Southern Africa as a whole.

VAT Exemption on Renewable Energy Products Benefits stretch beyond just cost savings

The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has put forward a crucial proposal—removing Value Added Tax (VAT) on renewable energy products. This policy, if adopted, could exponentially accelerate the adoption of clean energy solutions. The potential benefits stretch beyond just cost savings and could mark a significant shift in Zimbabwe’s energy landscape, creating ripple effects across various sectors.

Lowering Costs for Consumers and Businesses

The VAT exemption would directly lead to a reduction in the upfront cost of renewable energy technologies, including solar panels, batteries, inverters and other essential components. Zimbabwean households and businesses already face high electricity costs and erratic power supply due to over reliance on grid electricity. By removing VAT, the price of renewable energy systems becomes more accessible, allowing more people to adopt these solutions. This will also increase the demand for renewable energy products, creating a more vibrant market.

Currently, many households rely on expensive diesel generators or intermittent power from the national grid. Making solar and wind energy more affordable will reduce the need for these costly and polluting alternatives. This VAT relief will also help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which form a critical part of Zimbabwe's economy, as they will be able to reduce their energy costs and improve productivity.

Bridging the Energy Gap

Zimbabwe is currently experiencing an energy crisis, with supply falling short of demand by anywhere between 500 to 1,000 megawatts (MW). This deficit has resulted in persistent load shedding, which has had a detrimental impact on industries, healthcare facilities and households. According to the Ministry of Energy and Power Development, renewable energy could play a vital role in narrowing this gap.

The country has set ambitious targets to generate 1,100MW of electricity from renewable sources by 2025. Removing VAT on renewable energy products is a strategic move to encourage investment in the sector. It would make it more feasible for private investors to develop large-scale solar and wind projects, thereby reducing the nation’s dependence on thermal power plants, which rely on coal and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.

Economic Growth and Job Creation

By encouraging investment in solar and wind energy projects, the VAT exemption could stimulate local industries involved in manufacturing, installation and maintenance. According to a study by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), every dollar invested in renewable energy yields triple returns in economic benefits.

Moreover, as renewable energy infrastructure grows, more technical jobs will be created. From engineers to installation experts, this could lead to a much-needed boost in employment, especially for the country’s skilled labor force. In addition, ancillary industries such as manufacturing and logistics will benefit from the increased demand for renewable energy equipment.

Environmental Benefits and Sustainability

Zimbabwe is a signatory to the Paris Agreement and has committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 33% by 2030. Transitioning to renewable energy is a key component of this commitment. The VAT exemption on renewable energy products would not only make clean energy more affordable but also contribute to the country's broader climate goals.

Increased use of renewable energy would lead to a reduction in the use of coal and diesel-powered generators, which are currently among the largest contributors to carbon emissions in Zimbabwe. The reduction in VAT could also incentivise consumers and businesses to adopt energyefficient technologies, thereby fostering a culture of sustainability.

Attracting International Investment

Zimbabwe’s renewable energy sector has already attracted interest from international investors. However, the high cost of renewable technologies has been a barrier to widespread adoption. By removing VAT, the government could send a strong signal to international financiers and developers that Zimbabwe is serious about its renewable energy transition. This policy change could lead to an influx of foreign direct investment (FDI) into the energy sector, boosting the economy and improving energy security.

ZERA’s proposal to remove VAT on renewable energy products is a bold and progressive step that could catalyze Zimbabwe’s shift towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. The benefits are multifaceted: from reducing energy costs for consumers and businesses, to bridging the country's energy deficit, fostering economic growth and supporting environmental sustainability.

LPG Use Set to Increase

In the last decade, reliance on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Zimbabwe has noticeably grown. From a modest consumption of five million kilograms per annum in 2012, LPG use has skyrocketed to a remarkable 70 million kilograms in 2024. This 14-fold increase reflects growing preference for LPG as an alternative to traditional fuel sources, driven by its clean, efficient, and cost-effective nature.

This growth can be largely attributed to a series of concerted efforts by the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority, which has put in a lot of work to promote LPG as a safer and more sustainable alternative to traditional fuels like wood and coal.

For years, many held misconceptions about the safety of LPG, perceiving it as a dangerous option. However, through extensive awareness campaigns and training on proper handling and usage, these fears have been steadily eroded. Today, the fuel is recognised as a cleaner, more reliable energy source for both heating and cooking, especially in a country prone to frequent electricity shortages.

The advantages of LPG go beyond environmental benefits. On a practical level, transitioning to LPG has the potential to ease the country’s electricity crisis, with the potential to reduce power consumption by up to 60%. This has made LPG an attractive option for many households and industries seeking reliable energy solutions in the face of rolling blackouts and unpredictable power supply.

However, the rapid growth in LPG consumption has also brought challenges. A key concern is the proliferation of substandard LPG cylinders and unlicensed operators, posing safety risks. ZERA has responded by confiscating over 300 non-branded gas cylinders and is now working closely with law enforcement to regulate the market, seeing to it that only licensed operators and certified products are available to consumers.

Despite these hurdles, the upward trajectory of LPG consumption shows no signs of slowing. With continued annual growth expected at around 5%, Zimbabwe’s reliance on LPG is set to deepen.

GRID AFRICA TO BUILD 72MW SOLAR SYSTEM FOR MINERS

Grid Africa, a leading innovator in solar energy solutions, is on a mission to reshape Africa’s energy landscape. By leveraging cutting-edge solar technologies, the company is not only enhancing energy efficiency but also drastically reducing costs for its clients. In a continent where access to reliable and affordable energy remains a challenge, Grid Africa is emerging as a key player in the transition to sustainable energy, contributing to both economic growth and environmental preservation.

Revolutionising Zimbabwe’s Mining

Industry with Solar Energy

Recently, Grid Africa embarked on a transformative project to develop a 72-megawatt (MW) solar power system for multiple mining operations in Zimbabwe. This ambitious initiative is designed to drastically reduce the mining sector's reliance on expensive energy imports, which have long been a burden on operational costs. By switching to solar power, Zimbabwean mines are projected to save over US$9.2 million annually—a substantial financial relief that could be reinvested in further development and modernization of mining operations.

But the benefits extend far beyond cost savings. Solar energy, as a renewable resource, will significantly cut the mines’ carbon footprint, contributing to Zimbabwe’s larger environmental and sustainability targets. Mining is traditionally an energy-intensive industry, often reliant on fossil fuels, which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and environmental degradation. By transitioning to clean energy, the industry will not only mitigate its environmental impact but also support Zimbabwe’s commitments under global climate agreements.

Strategic Partnerships and

This project is backed by a network of strategic technology and financing partners, ensuring that the transition to solar energy is both technologically advanced and financially sustainable. By involving global leaders in renewable energy technology and financing, Grid Africa is not just installing solar panels; it is creating an integrated energy solution. The power plants to be constructed at the mining sites will be tailored to the specific energy needs of each operation, ensuring optimal efficiency and reliability.

Moreover, Grid Africa is tapping into innovative energy storage solutions, which are critical for ensuring a continuous energy supply. Since solar energy is intermittent— dependent on weather conditions and daylight—energy storage systems will allow the mines to operate seamlessly even when solar generation is low. This kind of technological foresight places Grid Africa at the forefront of renewable energy solutions in Africa.

Aligning with Zimbabwe’s Sustainability Goals

The Zimbabwean government has been vocal about its commitment to renewable energy, especially as the country continues to experience power shortages and unreliable grid supply. Home-Grown Approach to Sustainability

What truly makes Viridi special is its focus on local innovation. We have long relied on imported fuels and materials and Viridi is changing that by looking to local agricultural products. Their flagship initiative, an outgrower scheme, engaged over 5,000 farmers—many of whom are women and youth—to cultivate castor beans, the primary ingredient for Viridi’s bio-lubricants and transformer oils. By supporting local farmers, Viridi not only creates jobs but also reduces Zimbabwe’s reliance on imported materials. This is sustainability in action—both environmentally and economically.

Viridi’s Founder and CEO, Collen Moyo, is an outspoken advocate for using local resources to address Zimbabwe’s challenges. He believes that instead of benchmarking local products against foreign standards, Zimbabwe should develop its own. Viridi’s innovative solutions are a testament to the power of home-grown knowledge and resources. As Moyo puts it, Zimbabwe’s greatest asset is its potential for self-sufficiency and Viridi Solutions is tapping into that potential to drive meaningful change.

Bio-Lubricants

Viridi is pushing the envelope with its bio-lubricants, vegetable-based oils that offer superior performance while being gentle on the environment. These oils are ideal for industries looking to reduce wear on machinery and improve sustainability. One of the standout products is Viridi’s transformer oil, which is free from carcinogens and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), harmful chemicals commonly found in traditional oils. By eliminating these toxins, Viridi ensures that their oils can be safely used in industrial settings without the risk of environmental contamination.

But the company is not stopping at lubricants. Viridi is on the cusp of producing diesel from castor beans, a significant step toward energy independence for Zimbabwe. Right now, they are waiting for the delivery of distillers that will enable them to produce clean diesel, renewable diesel. This will happen before the end of the year. This development could further solidify Viridi as a key player in Zimbabwe’s renewable energy future.

Innovation Through Collaboration

Innovation does not happen in isolation and Viridi Solutions understands this better. The company actively collaborates with local research institutes, such as the Harare

Institute of Technology, to continuously improve its products. By working together, they are not only developing new solutions but also helping other startups bring their eco-friendly innovations to market. This collaborative approach extends beyond Zimbabwe’s borders, as Viridi Solutions has also received support from regional partners and regulatory bodies, including the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) and the Standards Association of Zimbabwe.

These partnerships have been instrumental in Viridi’s growth, helping the company meet international safety and environmental standards while staying true to its commitment to local development. The

company’s investment in research and development ensures that it remains at the cutting edge of eco-friendly industrial solutions, positioning it to expand both locally and internationally.

Building a Greener, Self-Sufficient Zimbabwe

Viridi Solutions’ range of biodegradable, high-performance fluids demonstrates that eco-friendly alternatives can be both practical and profitable. By focusing on local production and innovative collaboration, Viridi is helping Zimbabwe transition from a reliance on imported materials to a greener, more self-sufficient economy.

The company's future plans, including expanding into diesel production and further refining their bio-lubricants,

highlight their commitment to leading Zimbabwe toward energy independence. With their outgrower scheme and collaborations with research institutions, Viridi is also playing a crucial role in empowering local communities, creating jobs, and building a more resilient economy. With a commitment to research, local development and collaboration, Viridi Solutions is setting a new standard for industrial innovation in Zimbabwe and beyond. Their home-grown approach to creating biodegradable, eco-friendly solutions not only meets the needs of industries but also empowers local communities and drives Zimbabwe toward a greener, self-sufficient future.

By choosing Viridi Solutions’ products, companies would be investing in highquality, safe and sustainable products that will help them thrive in an

increasingly eco-conscious world.

Understanding Your Electrical Cables

Electrical cables transport electrical energy from one point to another A cable is an assembly of one or more electrically conducting wires which is used to carry electric current Electricity travels along some materials more easily than others and materials are divided into conductors and insulators.

Components of Electrical Cable

1. Conductors: are the electricity transmitting wires in a cable. These are made from high conducting metals like Copper and Aluminium which have low resistance

2. Insulators: are bad conductors of electricity, insulators do not allow electricity to pass through them

In earlier times, paper, cloth, or rubber were used as insulating materials. However, these

Polyethylene, and Butyl Rubber.

The conductors, usually copper wires, are covered with insulating material to prevent contact with each other, or with any external conducting materials. Insulation varies in thickness Wamount of current they have to carry: the greater the current, the thicker the conductor

3. Cable metal protection: In some cases the cables may have metal protections. Electrical metal shields (screens) are applied to isolate the signals that pass through the interior of the cable from possible external interference.

Mechanical protection (armours) protect the cable from possible external aggressions and damage.

4. Outer Sheath: The function of this outer insulator jacket is eminently protection. The sheath protects the cable from atmospheric conditions like high moisture in the air, chemical
