Jamaican vibes in Harare

Ever since Bob Marley performed at the inaugural Independence celebrations (and before) ties between Zimbabwe and Jamaica have been strong. Although Jamaica is much smaller than Zimbabwe, with a much smaller population, the country has influenced music and lifestyles across the world.

Sorrel Restaurant and Lounge, situated in Avondale just opposite the flea market, offers more than just great authentic Jamaican food – it’s a dining and entertainment experience

– including food, drinks, music and a laid back Caribbean atmosphere.

Sorrel is collaboration and a cooperative effort of a marriage between Robert and Mary Moore, a Jamaican and Zimbabwean couple.

We spoke to Moore on the phone to find out more.

Moore pointed out that there are many similarities between Jamaica and

Zimbabwe in terms of the culture, music and the lifestyle. But until now there hasn’t been a restaurant serving genuine Jamaican cuisine. Jamaica has had a varied history which contributes to the fusion of many different cultures and tastes.

The majority of the population is of West African decent although

the food has influences from Europe (in particular from Spain and later from Britain), India and China.

Jamaica is close to Cuba, Haiti and Puerto Rico so it has absorbed much of the Caribbean tastes and way of life. Jamaica became fully independent fairly recently in 1962 after centuries of colonisation.

Moore said that Jamaican culture is now widely inclusive accepting and cherishing people from all walks of life and different backgrounds. He calls it the Human Family where people look at their similarities rather than their differences.

Sorrel takes its name from Sorrel wine – a unique and distinctive fermented drink that’s mildly alcoholic and a staple in Jamaica and the Caribbean.

It reputedly has a number of health benefits including use as an anti-inflammatory and for bacterial infections and even as a part of herbal cancer treatments. It’s a member of the hibiscus family and has a sweet, 8 REFINED ISSUE 10 | 2023

gingery, spicy flavour and resembles a full bodied red wine. Make sure to try it as an accompaniment to your spicy Jamaican food – it’s unlike any other wine you’ve tasted. It’s sometimes augmented with traditional Jamaican white rum for an extra kick.

The menu is pretty varied and all prepared with love and care by chef Shawn Bernard

from Jamaica to ensure authentic preparation and cooking methods – and great taste. The head chef is also training local cooks in the best Jamaican food preparation. Most of the ingredients are locally sourced, apart from the special herbs and spices that make Jamaican food so special.

Some of the key ingredients include the pimento berry, which tastes a little like coriander, as well as coconut milk and coconut cream, escallion, thyme and, of course, scotch bonnet peppers, sometimes called Caribbean peppers. Jamaican food tends to be spicy and herby rather than very hot, although the peppers pack quite a punch.

The menu includes a variety of starters like jerk or barbeque chicken wings, escovitch chicken strips and kebabs. Jerk food refers to a unique spice rub or marinade used to prepare the food – meat or vegetables – which are cooked over a flame grill for a smoky flavour.

It’s a similar way of cooking to what we refer to as a barbeque or a braai.

Escovitch refers to a special marinade made from, amongst other things, pickled vegetables, vinegar, onions, pimento, bell peppers and scotch bonnet peppers – often ginger, garlic and thyme as well as other spices are included.

by the chef, as well as a selection of salads like a chicken salad, a jerk salad, a vegetable salad and a pasta salad. For lunch and dinner their speciality is escovitched fish but they also have steamed fish, grilled salmon, fish stew and prawns. For serious meat eaters there’s goat, pork and beef dishes (including fall off the bone oxtail) as well as loads of chicken options.

There’s jerk chicken, curried chicken, barbeque chicken, chicken stew, stuffed chicken breasts and plain fried chicken. They have a number of side dishes you can order like traditional peas and rice, steamed vegetables, fries and festivals. Festivals are something like dumplings or the South African vetkoek.

Jamaican staples include plantains (green bananas, usually fried), yams and sweet potatoes so there’s an emphasis on healthy, organic food.

There’s also a chef’s special vegetarian option for those staying away from animal products. There’s a kids’ menu too for smaller, less spicy, options. On Sundays there’s a buffet option. Certainly something for the most discerning diners – and the prices are reasonable too.

There’s a number of desserts on offer and the fully stocked bar offers liqueurs and cocktails to finish off your meal. There are all the classic cocktails available as well as Jamaican specialities which tend towards Jamaican white rum. Alcohol free mocktails are also available. You can pop into the bar/lounge to relax and socialise and enjoy the music and the atmosphere without buying a meal.

There’s relaxed, informal seating in the front courtyard, next to the bar, as well as seating around the pool for warmer days and nights and the fire pit – which is great for cooler evenings. Above the bar is the ‘sky lounge’, a raised deck to capture the breeze and the views. The ‘sky lounge’ has curtains so it can be completely closed off for private functions. Seating options around the outdoor spaces include tables and chairs, banquettes and bar stools and raised counters.

Inside there are more formal seating options for around 40 to 50 diners, although it’s still quite relaxed and unfussy.

Large glass windows open out on both sides of the interior dining area so it still feels fresh, light and breezy.

Upstairs, above the inside dining area, there’s a large conference room as well as an en suite bedroom for businessmen who want to stay overnight after a gruelling day.

All of this is overseen by general manager Fitzroy McFarlane –also a Jamaican national - who has years of experience in hotels and on cruise ships. He’s very much hands on and keeps the place running efficiently and ensures the staff are friendly and helpful. Fitz is always around to deal with any problems or queries that guests might have.

Top Zimbabwean Sommelier Tawanda Marume is passionate about wine and people particularly training and development within the industry.

A sommelier is a wine connoisseur, typically gracing fine restaurants and hospitality establishments. They oversee every facet of wine service, from procurement and storage to recommending pairings to discerning guests. Sommeliers possess an intimate understanding of wine,

encompassing its history, production, and tasting nuances. With their expertise, they guide guests through the wine world, instilling confidence in their selections.

even knew what it was. Later, when I moved to Stellenbosch to stay with my sister, I decided to enrol in the Cape Wine Academy program to learn more about wine,” he says.

It was around 2010 that Tawanda Marume began his career in the wine business while he was employed at a restaurant in Cape Town.

In 2020 he won Best Sommelier of Zimbabwe. From thereon he has received international recognition in the wine world. In February this year, he was selected to participate in the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI) Best Sommelier of

The Wine Steward Certificate is an intense one-day course to prepare candidates to be efficient on the restaurant floor. Similarly, seven years ago, Tawanda took 18 candidates through the Cape Wine Academy

Tawanda notes that wine has stories that span millennia and one can spend the whole day just talking about the subject ‘’and wine education is at the core of it.”

He is an active member of The Sommeliers Association of Zimbabwe. The SAZ is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the professional development of sommeliers in Zimbabwe.

The association was founded by a group of passionate wine professionals who saw a need for a dedicated organisation to represent the interests of Zimbabwean sommeliers.

Jameson Irish Whiskey is one of the most popular whiskeys in the world, and for good reason. It is smooth, mellow and has a complex flavour profile that makes it perfect for sipping neat or enjoying in a cocktail.

The flavour is due to a number of factors, including the use of pot stills as well as the aging and the blending process. The range includes but is not limited to the original Jameson Irish Whiskey, Jameson Black Barrel and Jameson Tripple Tripple.

But with its popularity comes a downside. Jameson is an aspirational brand that people want to be associated with, which makes it a target for counterfeiters. Illegal manufacturers try to profit from this demand by selling fake Jameson at a lower price.

Bullred Distribution, the official supplier of Jameson Irish Whiskey in Zimbabwe indicates that they are aware of the increase in fake whiskey on the market and are taking the initiative to protect consumers.

They have taken steps to combat the black-market distribution of illicit alcohol by adding extra security features to their bottles, such as a clear plastic seal with Jameson engraved in green on the lid and a white “Drink Responsibly” sticker on the side of the bottle.

“These additional features were implemented in Zimbabwe to empower the local customer to identify whiskey that comes from Jameson Whiskey’s official Zimbabwe distributor,” Bullred reveals.

They are also working on a campaign to spread the Buy Original message and the dangers of illicit alcohol.

“We as Bullred Distribution, pride ourselves on selling the original product, which we stand behind. We are not responsible for the imitations that you see in the market and we are actively working to educate consumers,” the distributor adds.

The company is also partnering with civil service organisations and medical professionals to find ways to tackle the scourge of counterfeit alcohol.

Customers are also being encouraged to drink responsibly in order to avoid health and life-threatening complications.

Illicit whiskey can be dangerous, as it may contain harmful chemicals or toxins. Hence, Bullred has made a commitment to providing genuine and safe products, and it is taking steps to ensure that its customers are protected.

“Since there’s no quality control or oversight over how these drinks are produced, they may contain very high amounts of ethanol, increasing the risk of poisoning. They may also contain harmful and toxic ingredients like methanol which can cause blindness and is often lethal,” Bullred Distribution notes.

Also, counterfeit alcohol may be contaminated with toxic chemicals and animal products that are added to speed up fermentation. These contaminants can cause poisoning and infection, and can even be fatal.

The distribution company contends they are not an enforcer of the law, underscoring that “all we can do is ensure we follow the laws in place and do everything we can to inform consumers on how best to protect themselves when purchasing Jameson Irish Whiskey.”

Bullred’s 4 Ps of Purchasing Alcohol Place: Buy alcohol only from reputable and licensed retailers, bars and supermarkets.

Avoid buying alcohol from car-boot salespeople, unlicensed market traders or fellow customers in bars.

Price: If the product is being sold well below its normal price it is probably fake.

Packaging: Inspect the packaging carefully for poor quality, spelling mistakes and unusual shapes. Check the seal on the bottle to make sure it is intact. If the seal is broken or damaged, the contents may have been tampered with and are not safe to drink. If you have a barcode scanner app on your phone, scan the barcode on the bottle and verify that it matches the correct product.

Product: One of the best ways to spot fake whiskey is to pay attention to the smell. Jameson has a unique aroma that is difficult to imitate. If the alcohol smells like paint stripper or nail polish remover, it is probably fake. Another sign of fake whiskey is sediment or particles in the bottle. If the contents have separated, that is also a bad sign. Real whiskey is a smooth, clear liquid and it should not have any sediment or particles.

Ultimately, if you are unsure whether or not the bottle of whiskey is real, err on the side of caution and don’t buy it. Buy the original, drink responsibly and enjoy the original Jameson Irish Whiskey rather than the fake whiskey that has proliferated the market.

IS THE NEW NAME IN THE BILTONG MARKET Text by Martin Chemhere

Beef biltong is an amazing source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. It is prepared without ever being heated or dehydrated, and is air-dried. Additionally, it is low in carbohydrates, sugars, and contains no gluten.

Tradition: Zimtong Biltong has emerged on the market to continue with the tradition of availing biltong to the Zimbabwean market.

The company started in August 2021 and is co-owned by David Landsberg and Trevor Cooper, an entrepreneurial and hardworking duo. Trevor has been in the meat industry for over 20 years, bringing in lots of expertise and guidance for the Harare-based small business.

The company had a funny beginning, as explained by co-founder David: “We were sitting and chatting, when a friend came around and offered us some biltong.

After tasting it, it had no flavour and we decided to start making our version of biltong,” he said.

Their biltong is inspected and processed on delivery to prevent any contamination. Working on batches of small quantities is preferred as they are easier and faster to process. The drying area and dryers are cleaned regularly and gloves are worn when cutting, processing, and serving customers.

Delivery options include orders of 1kg and above within Harare (20km radius). Only large orders can be delivered outside Harare and cost will depend on distance.

Product: They mainly produce beef biltong, readily and abundantly available in the country. Occasionally mix that with the rare but much-loved game biltong, whenever they can source it. Beef biltong comes in four flavours (plain, garlic, chilli and garlic chilli) and game meat biltong, they have the plain and chilli versions. Sourcing of the meat is from PHI Commodities abattoir based in Shamva or Koala Park Butchery and abattoir (Harare).

The biltong products undergo stringent production processes. The natural drying of biltong is done when the weather is correct. Indoor dryers are used if the weather does not permit them to naturally dry their biltong.

Regarding the average moisture and fat content, Zimtong considers that fat content is hard to place a figure on as every piece of meat differs. However, they do trim the fat off if the customer requires less fat on their biltong.

“The moisture content of our biltong ranges between 50% and 55%.

If a customer requires a higher moister content, we will make it to their specifications, and it will not affect the price. If a customer requires a lower moister content the price will be affected as with dehydration of any product there is a certain threshold where a business starts losing money. Currently, our threshold is 50% dried,” said Trevor.

Zimtong’s biltong is unique since in-house recipes are used and the base spices used are a filler to their spice requirements.

Their base spice range is supplied by a local spice company before an internal process commences of adding coriander, pepper, garlic, chilli, salt, vinegar, Worcestershire source and meat tenderizer to obtain the flavours we require.

“We also make on-request biltong cakes according to the client’s requirements.

From a 500g cake up to 6kg cakes with multiple tears, of which can be one flavour or multiple flavours,” added David.

They used to offer custom biltong options however, they do not offer this option anymore other than the moister content has been changed. Customers were asking for specific flavours, glutton-free and a variety of other custom biltong requests and then not showing up to collect or pay for their orders leaving them stuck with a product they couldn’t sell.

Pricing, marketing and the future Customers can place a minimum order of $5 per packet and delivery of 1kg packages is also made within a 20km radius of the Zimtong location in Harare.

Orders can be placed through WhatsApp, Facebook and by phone. Attendance at various markets and events in the northern suburbs of Harare is also done where orders can be placed.

David and Trevor believe that their product lines are of top quality. Their main focus at present is to keep customers happy by maintaining high standards.

Currently, they only produce biltong and they are looking at venturing into boerewors in 2024.

If you are short on time, grilling or campfire cooking may be a good option. If you have more time, smoking or Dutch oven cooking may be a better choice.

While grilling over an open fire is a popular option, there are many other ways to cook outdoors. Here are several options to try out.

BBQ Grill Grilling is the preferred way to cook outside for many people, whether they use gas or charcoal. Flipping meat on the grill is a classic outdoor activity. What’s more, steaks, chicken and vegetables, hot dogs, and other foods’ flavours come alive when seasoned and cooked on an outside grill.

Smoker Smoked meats are a favourite of many backyard chefs.

Pizza Oven An advantage of using an outdoor pizza oven is that it cooks pizza much faster than a conventional oven. A typical pizza takes about 15 minutes to cook in a conventional oven, but it only takes approximately 4 minutes to cook in an outdoor pizza oven.

Rocket stoves are typically Jor L-shaped, with openings on both ends. The user builds the fire in the lower end, while the upper end creates a significant draft. This draft helps to generate a lot of cooking heat without using a lot of fuel.

Pot Tripod Outdoor cooking is not just for grilling meats over an open fire. You can also cook stews, soups and pasta over a fire if you have a pot tripod. A pot tripod is a three-legged stand that you place over a fire. Each of the three feet is positioned outside of the flames, and there is a hook in the centre on which you can hang a pot. The fire underneath heats the pot, allowing you to cook delicious sauces, soups, stews and sides.

Skewers Skewers are some of the oldest tools for cooking food over open fires. This method can be used for cooking sausages, potatoes, and plenty of other outdoor delicacies. Rotisserie Rotisserie and spit-cooked meals are a delicious and time-honoured tradition.

Rotisserie cooking involves suspending meat on a long rod over a fire and carefully turning and timing it for even cooking.

Dutch Oven Dutch ovens are made of cast iron, which is a durable material that can withstand high temperatures. This makes them ideal for cooking over a campfire or in a fireplace. They can be used to cook a variety of foods, including stews, soups, breads, and cakes

We’ve put together some ideas for a quick pick-me-up that easy and simple to do and can be achieved on a modest budget. Most of these suggestions don’t require any special skills beyond the scope of a fairly competent DIY Dad – or Mum.

Professional interior designers provide an invaluable service and excellent advice but often putting your own personal stamp on a room is really satisfying.

You can also get friends and family involved for fun weekend projects that won’t break the bank. You can also do your room makeovers in stages as time and money allow.

A fresh coat of paint is one of the quickest and easiest ways to revitalize a tired room.

A normal sized room can be painted in a day or two and the family can help out too. You might want to just paint a single feature wall, an alcove, or the whole room. You can be as bold as you like – it’s easy to paint over something if you absolutely hate it when it’s finished. Try painting a small section first to see how it suits your room and the mood you’re trying to achieve.

Sometimes paint colours vary and the swatch you saw in the hardware shop looks different to the paint colour on the wall.

Colours also vary depending on the lighting and the adjacent colours of curtains, carpets and furniture.

You can be as adventurous as you like so try painting stripes, darker colours below a dado rail, or even geometric designs. Many of the bigger paint suppliers like Dulux or Artisan Trading or Paint-Tech offer a colour consultancy service and they can also advise on the best type of paint to choose.

If the room has built in cupboards, like most bedrooms, or built in shelving units like a lot of living rooms or studies, try painting the woodwork in a new fresh colour. Dreary old kitchen cabinets can be given a new lease on life with a quick coat of paint.

Even tired old wooden furniture like dining room tables and chairs can get a new look with a coat of paint. Chalk paint is a good way to get a country cottage, distressed look – Little Paris in Ballantyne Park has a good range. Pharoah’s at the Stables in Borrowdale can do renovations and chalk paint for you to give your furniture a new and unique look.

There are even options for painting ceramic tiles – with the right preparation – although generally not recommended for ceramic floor tiles. Dulux offers Supergrip that can be used as a primer for painting ceramic tiles.

With any type of painting it’s always best to make sure that the surfaces are correctly prepared and that you have all the right tools and equipment. Don’t forget plastic sheeting or drop cloths to protect floors and furniture from accidental drips and make sure you have the correct cleaning materials (like thinners or turpentine) to make cleaning up easier.

Wallpaper is a great, quick, inexpensive way to brighten up any room.

Artisan Trading and The Showroom have a good selection as do Wallpaper World in Avondale, Perspective Interiors and many other outlets.

Wallpaper can be used for a feature wall or even for wardrobe or cabinet doors. It’s great to line cabinet interiors, drawers or the back of bookshelves with wallpaper. Some printing companies like Dzines Signage and Tylerman Branding Solutions will even create unique custom wallpaper just for you.

A simple and quick way to change the look of your kitchen cabinets, or the built in wardrobes in the bedroom, is to change and update the handles. It’s not a particularly difficult job but you do need to fill in and paint over the old holes. of handles but if you’re looking for something special try Handle-it and Roco Fittings in Newlands or Builders Hardware Centre in the CBD. Another good way to change the look of your room is to get new lighting.

Wall or ceiling lights might need an electrician to be installed safely,

especially if you opt for a dimmer switch. Most LED lights can now work on a dimmer which can make a big difference to the general ambiance.

Table lamps or standing lamps can just be plugged in – and they can make a significant change to the mood and atmosphere in any room.

Prime World has a great selection of pendants and table lights and they can recommend electricians if needed.

Sometimes just changing a few accessories can brighten up the space. New curtains are quite an investment but should last for years. Try The Curtain Cat or Blinds and Designs for custom made curtains and blinds made and installed to suit your needs.

The making of a great Master of Ceremonies

I have had the privilege of watching Masters of Ceremonies (MCs) such as Marc Pozzo, Morris Touch and Tendayi Chakanyuka and I’ve been impressed by their exuberant stage persona, confidence and charisma. Not everyone can grab a microphone and effectively pulloff the job. One thing for certain is that it requires a very particular type of person with a certain set of skills to execute the job successfully.

A master of ceremonies (MC, emcee or director of ceremony) is the official host for an event, performance or party. The master of ceremonies introduces speakers, makes announcements and engages with the audience to keep the programme flowing smoothly. These MCs have honed their craft and they set me to thinking about what it takes to become a great MC. Here are a few tips to help you become a sought after MC: Study the programme and find out a bit about the guests Having all the details of the event helps to set the tone for the atmosphere the MC is required to create. Meet with the event organisers and go over the planned structure

and flow of the event in detail. Knowing beforehand what should be talked about, what’s coming up and what’s happening (or supposed to be happening) at any given moment are crucial elements in holding an event together. Being prepared and organised ensures that the programme goes according to plan and everyone is on the same page at all times.

Get background information on key speakers and guests and use that information to prepare introductions that are personal and genuine. You should also find out if there are any guests of honour or special audience members who should be mentioned. Review the names and titles of anyone that you are going to talk about so that you pronounce them correctly.

Practice your public speaking skills Being an MC is not easy and you need to put in time and effort to hone your public speaking skills. Practising beforehand puts you at ease in front of a crowd or even on camera. The experts advise memorising major points and thinking about your posture and hand gestures. You can adjust your voice to be serious or casual accordingly.

Smiling works wonders on the audience and it also boosts your confidence.

Be versatile and improvise Murphy’s Law states that “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” The wrong music might play, a waiter may drop a plate, or the scheduled guest may not yet be ready to step up. In these instances the MC should be able to adapt and improvise quickly. Stay calm, composed and control your temper - an MC with a bad attitude can really put a damper on an event. Roll with the punches and just continue if you make a mistake. Looking directly at the audience can make you nervous so try focusing a little above their heads to minimise eye contact. Slow down your speech, pause slightly in-between sentences, and if need be take a deep breath away from the microphone.

Exhibit loads of energy and employ appropriate humour As an MC you can be energetic and humorous to add a bit of sparkle unless the event is supposed to serious and formal. Try to keep the audience amused and

engaged. There are a lot of resources available online such as the book ‘Comedy Writing Secrets’ and speaking with experienced people for tips and insights can help.

Remember that the MC is not the star of the show but is there to make others feel important. During transitions in the programme it lightens the moment to say something funny or meaningful about the previous speaker or comment on what’s coming up next.

Dress for the occasion - and more Find out what the dress code is and then enhance it so that you stand out. If it’s a corporate event try matching your clothes with the logo colours of the organisation.

The festive season provides many exciting opportunities for our furry friends too – such as decorations to play with and wrapping paper to hide in. But tempting treats can also be problematic. Here are 12 tips to help Christmas with your pets go smoothly.

2. Tempting treats The smell of succulent turkey wafting from the kitchen is as irresistible to our pets as it is to us. Avoid leaving food anywhere within your pet’s reach – you can’t blame them if it’s left unattended! But it’s not just about protecting your Christmas dinner. Many foods we love can make pets unwell. Chocolate, onions, nuts, blue cheese, fruit cakes, puddings and mince pies can all be toxic to dogs and cats. Turkey bones can also be harmful as they can become lodged in the throat, splinter causing damage to the mouth, or block and perforate the intestines.

Overfeeding your pets is most likely to happen when the weather is cold, as you may be going on shorter walks and less frequently. Buying treats made specifically for pets means you can still give your pet a treat this winter, while eliminating the risk of causing stomach problems. You could also try baking homemade treats for your dog, cat or rabbits.

3. Christmas trees Having a fir or pine tree in the house is one of the wonders of the festive season. But it’s worth bearing in mind that although they look lovely, they can be troublesome for pets. The oils in fir trees can be mildly toxic, causing stomach upsets, and the needles themselves can get stuck in your pet’s paw or throat. Regularly sweep up needles and close the door of the tree room when you go out, to avoid any accidents.

Text by Martin Chemhere Anglers in Zimbabwe consider the capture of a tigerfish (Hydrocynus vittatus) to be one of the most thrilling and rewarding experiences in fishing. This species is renowned for its beauty and strength, and is considered to be one of the most formidable freshwater fish in the world. Many anglers strive to catch as many tigerfish as possible, making it their ultimate angling goal.

Every year, anglers from Zimbabwe, Africa, and beyond come together for the Kariba International Tiger Fish Tournament (KITFT). Participants compete to catch the biggest and heaviest tigerfish in a tournament known for its excellent fishing. This year’s tournament was held from 11th to 13th October in Kariba, the largest man-made dam in Africa. This prestigious event gives anglers the opportunity to demonstrate their fishing talents and catch and release the predatory and much-coveted game fish of Africa.

A first-time angler participated at the ever-growing tournament on social media platform Facebook, and commented: “Another experience ticked off my bucket list. Fished at KITFT for the first time. Wow, what an experience.... the excitement of catching your first fish, landing it, videoing the length and its safe release back into the water. Placed 111th in individuals (not too shabby for a first-timer and with an injury) and 15th as a Team.

Was great fun all in all.”

The angler’s delight captured the proceedings of the justended tournament; where, once again, anglers from all over the world put up an amazing show! Their skills and dedication made the tournament, clearly, so special.

Roxbury were the primary sponsor of the tournament that saw Charter X Thuli Petroleum come out victorious, with Hyena Sunrisers following closely behind by just 0.12 points.

The success of the 62nd edition of the tournament, was due to many factors such as the large number of participants and the thrills of catching and releasing a coveted fish species as well as the many sponsors who came through.

Revolution Bike Park, a premier bike park in the heart of Harare’s Northern Suburbs, has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1985 as the Harare BMX Club. The journey began with the construction of the first track at OG’s sports grounds, evolving over the years to meet international standards. This commitment has resulted in the club producing five World Champions and over 50 riders reaching the finals at the annual World Championships.

In 2016, the sale of the original land brought uncertainty, but with the backing of the new owner and renewed enthusiasm from the Committee and Members, the club is now poised to usher in a new era with Revolution Bike Park. The new track 60 REFINED ISSUE 10 | 2023

has been meticulously designed, drawing inspiration from the Manchester (UK) BMX track. It offers a unique and challenging experience for riders of all ages and skill levels.

Revolution Bike Park is not just a BMX race track; it has transformed into a comprehensive off-road Bike Park, introducing The Pump Track as an exciting addition. This innovative track features S-bends, bridges, and jumps, providing an off-road cycling experience for enthusiasts. The Pump Track aims to be the “off-road” counterpart to the iconic Safety Sam, a well-known figure in Harare.

The park’s mission extends beyond competitive racing, emphasizing the benefits of two-wheeled sports
