In addition to the ‘big band music’, the talented musicians also play in small formations throughout the Stubai Valley and beyond. The musicloving youngsters show off their skills in the Flashing Sounds youth orchestra. “The music band is an important cultural vehicle that proudly presents the village beyond the Stubai Valley,” David Egger continues.

200 Years Of History

The history of the Bundesmusikkapelle Neustift officially begins with a real sensation. The earliest evidence of the ‘Stubaier Musikbande’ can be found on a historical copperplate engraving in the Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum. The occasion: Archduchess Marie Luise of Austria and widow of Napoleon I, visited the Alpeiner Ferner, accompanied by a music band and marksmen on 9 September 1823. At the same time, Paul Schönherr is said to have founded the music band in Neustift after his discharge from military service. He was a member for 40 years. Little is known about the brass band’s chronicle until the end of the 19th century. Gottfried Gleirscher was elected conductor in 1906 and remained in office for 49 years. He rebuilt the music band after the two world wars and was also one of the great musical figures in the Stubai Valley. The first trips abroad and new instrumentation took place under his son Alfons Gleirscher, who took over the baton in 1955. David Egger has been in charge of the organisation of the Bundesmusikkapelle Neustift since 2016. With Philipp Haas, a musician from our own ranks once again took over the musical direction as conductor in 2019.
