WEEK 3 READING: LEGER, LE CORBUSIER, AND PURISM
Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? (Maximum 100 words) According to Le Corbusier, he describes Pictorial space as an area that cannot be entered nor can there be any form of movement within the space. It is viewed from a distance as an ‘irremediably space’ which is a space that is impossible to correct. Frontality is key in pictorial space meaning the composition consists of the just the front view and abandons lateral view.
Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against?(Maximum 100 words) Colour and texture were the two properties to the flatness of Le Corbusier’s paintings. The colour black was often not used for his paintings, instead he uses white lead producing a ‘chalkiness’ to his colours. This chalkiness creates an imagery of continuous skin almost never ending. Texture is associated with depth, as well as showing the view what the materials are (wood, steel, glass...etc). Colour and texture seems to go against the idea that depth and distance are the properties that show spatial relationships between objects.

MARIO’S WORLD

1ST MARIO’S WORLD
Here is the first layer of my mario world, it is the upper level. I added small details such as mushrooms and coins to suit the theme of the game.

COMBINED MARIO’S WORLD
The final outline of the combined sketches of upper and lower levels.

WEEK 4 READING: AXONOMETRIC PROJECTION: NEW GEOMETRIES OLD ORIGINS
Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection? (Maximum 100 words) Pictorial space is based on a ‘distorted’ view of the object, there is a vanishing point as if to show how the human eye perceives objects and spaces. Due to this, viewing the whole space in its true form is limited. On the other hand, projection focuses more on the correct and true form of the space. It shows the space in all viewpoints whilst in the proper form. Instead of being distorted, projections are parallel there is no vanishing point, in mathematical perspective the vanishing point is infinite.
Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? (Maximum 100 words) Axonometric projection first arose in the military context to portray 3D trajectories of artillery projectiles. In the 18th and 19th century it was practiced in engineering schools and was moving towards industrialization and mechanization. Because axonometric projection connects the perspectival view with the measurability and transmissibility of an orthographic projection.

ILLUSTRATED MARIO’S NEW WORLD
For this Mario world, the landscape is set in daylight with light coloured rectangular forms as well as the green rounded ‘mountain’. The nice contrast between the sharp edges and soft curves complimented each other and was able to bring attention to the eye. On the hidden parts of the world, such as areas behind the rectangular blocks, I explored with adding ponds and lakes as well as a sunken ground level with a set of stairs. There were some tiny details that link back to the Mario theme world, for example the mushrooms and flowers. To make areas appear more ‘grassy’or similar to a field, I included weeds to create that effect. Unlike the upper level the bottom level is not one flat land, the grass area appears slightly lower than the brown soil ground. I have also added a pond and a pit of lava. For the stone, I added jagged lines to portray the roughness of the surface.

APPENDIX
Here I would refer to my2D mario world and project it as an axonometric. The tools used were a set square, ruler, mechinical pencil and eraser.
After I finish the projection of my mario world, I would then take another piece of tracng paper and trace over the first draft. This is to ensure that the lines are clean and ready to scan.
Once I have scanned it, I will open it in photoshop and adjust the levels then launch it in adobe illustrator and start outlining it. Finally I would add the colours.
