Communication Philosophy & Technology omslag
The sub-department Communication, Philosophy and Technology: Centre for Integrative Development (CPT-CID) aims to develop a better understanding of the relations between the
life sciences and societal change.
We provide a stimulating environment for studying communication, deliberation, and moral values in relation to technology,
quality of life and international
development. Our starting point is that protection and innovation of
agriculture, food, health and environment are closely connected with social issues. Integrative understandings, and empirical and normative analyses are needed to support balanced social and technical innovation, and to enhance the interaction between science and society. The sub-department CPT consists of:
Strategic Communication (COM) • Philosophy (PHI) and • Knowledge, Technology and Innovation (KTI) •

Communication The Strategic Communication chair (COM) studies the dynamics and consequences of strategic communication by organizations and citizens. The focus is on the interactional processes through which public images, discourses, opinions and practices come about, and on how these may be influenced by communication professionals.
Some thesis topics of our students Green power of social
exclusion
The role of social media in the green movement of Iran
This thesis investigates the role of social media in context of the conflict over the presidential elections of 2009 in Iran. Rosanne Elisabeth de Vos | BSc-thesis 2011
When people are excluded, they become motivated to build social connections, which fulfil their ‘need to belong’. Building social connections can be achieved by pro-social behaviour. Can organic consumption be seen as a pro-social behaviour and can it be triggered by social exclusion? Anna Tasso | MSc-thesis 2013
Risk
perception and acceptance concerning wolves and wild boars In the near future, wolves might enter the Netherlands. Wolves can be seen as threats for Dutch citizens, whom possibly overestimate these risks. On the other hand, wild boars, already prevalent in the Netherlands, induce risks that are underestimated by Dutch citizens. Nature managers will have to communicate with the public about nature policy, and for effective communication they will need to know about the public’s risk perception and acceptance. Britt Tamar Stikvoort | MSc-thesis 2012
Nothing changes,
everything changes A study of framing, ambition and interaction of young Greeks in the context of the Greek debt crisis. This interpretative research analyses how young Greeks perceive the Greek debt crisis through the concept of frames and framing in interaction. It is explored how the young Greeks cope with the situation in order to eliminate stress, fulfil needs and to pursue ambitions. Matilda Rizopulos | MSc-thesis 2012
Research
in Strategic Communication
The Strategic Communication Chair studies the dynamics and consequences of strategic communication of themes and issues in the Wageningen
domain.
Such studies involve both the deliberate use of communicative strategies by organizations that wish to connect to certain audiences, and the everyday communication strategies that citizen-consumers employ to achieve their own ends, often in response to actors like governmental agencies, industries, scientific communities, NGOs or managers in organizations. Thus, the research of the chair contributes to insights about the inter-human
processes through which
public images, opinions and risk perceptions come about (e.g. around new technological opportunities), the role of
persuasion and other communicative strategies in fostering individual and collective behavioral change, the interaction between planned and self-organized processes of change, and the way in which interpretative communities create, maintain and manage different
viewpoints, frames and discourses.

The Philosophy chair (PHI) studies ethical and other philosophical issues in relation

to the Wageningen Domains. We reflect on normative assumptions and implications of research and social practices concerning food production and consumption, public health, animal welfare and the environment, and thereby aim to contribute to responsible practices and policies in these fields.
Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1527 - 1593) - Rudolf II of Habsburg as Vertumnus
Research in Philosophy Our research projects focus on core concepts and principles that are often taken for granted in research, policy and practice. For example: How should we understand ‘risk’, ‘health’ and ‘safety’ in various policy contexts, e.g. food production and public health? Is
it possible to develop a coherent understanding of what is ‘natural’, e.g. in relation
to food production, agriculture, or nature development? How to evaluate the debates on intensive versus extensive livestock farming from an ethical perspective? What are the moral limits and justifications of patent regulation in the life sciences? Research and teaching activities involve ethical practical problems and analysis
reflection on
of the role and status of scientific
knowledge in our modern globalised world. We do this in close cooperation with other groups at Wageningen University. Our research strategy is pluralist,
pragmatic, and often
interdisciplinary, combining normative and empirical approaches. Moreover, we explore how analysis of practical issues may lead to theoretical insights and vice versa. Reflection and imagination can jointly unfold new ways for science, and society to deal with challenges to agriculture, development, public health and the environment. Building on our research and teaching activities, we fulfil consultative roles in various national and international settings in
business and social
policy, such as Unilever, and the Health Council of the Netherlands, and we participate in debates in public and professional media. See our website for thesis topics!
Marcel Verweij specialised as philosopher in normative analysis of ethical issues in public health. As member of the Health Council and editor of the journal Public Health Ethics he is in involved in research and policy making on, for example, health promotion, infectious disease control and resource allocation. Research in Knowledge, Technology and Innovation The KTI chair studies processes of socio-technical
innovation and transformation, with special attention to the communicative and socio-political dynamics involved in the production, exchange, integration and use of scientific and other knowledge. This simultaneously involves studying technology’s
impact on society and the social shaping of technology as two sides of a co-production process, and the analysis of interactions, interventions, design approaches and institutional set-ups relevant to enhancing and supporting innovation processes in society. These endeavors to understand science-society
interaction are situated in the context of challenges and opportunities in the Wageningen domain, such as food security, poverty, health hazards, inequality, health promotion, environmental degradation, climate change, conflict and scarcity of resources.
