t existing situation u The Monte Velho property is approximately 150 years old, featuring a country house built with local stones, clay and cal, officially dated from before 1951. The property is located on Monte Velho (which means Old Hill), near Cerro das Taipas (Clay Mountain), on the area of S達o Bartolomeu de Messines. The history of Monte Velho tells us much about the old and forgotten Algarvian lifestyle. Its inhabitants had a simple self-supporting life, working all day under the sun in the fields growing favas, alfarrobas, batatas and milho. Every once in a while, they had to travel to Messines by donkey to draw their drinking water from a local fountain, sharing news with the locals, and to sell the products they had cultivated. Life was slow and elementary, without modern comforts such as electricity. The existing house has 3 divisions, an indoor dispensa (Pantry) and a central located kitchen with an open-fire that would function as a heath buffer, heating up the middle walls of the house during the cold months. The small windows of the house functioned as a temperature regulator. The house was roofed with large eucalyptus beams, topped with a layer of canas (Bamboos) and a mixture of old clothes, paper and cement for insulation. On top of these layers, they used local Santa Catarina roof tiles. Sometimes, glass roof tiles would be used to create fantastic light effects in particularly dark areas in the house. Around the house there are various remains of animal stables, probably used for pigs, donkeys and chickens. At the front of the house there is a large 8x12m water cistern, used for irrigation and household purposes. There is also to be found a forno (oven house), used weekly to bake sour bread.

Main House In our concept we want to respect the old house structure for two main reasons: to keep up the original atmosphere of the construction and to be able to obtain a renovation building license. Before sketching, we always like to examine how houses like these were constructed. In this case the farm house has a simple construction with a large middle centered wall which keeps up the roof and supports the total construction and the exterior walls. The construction is made from local stones glued with calc-cement and the older parts were done with local red clay stapled in large blocks. We want to create for the future habitants of Casa Monte Velho a maximum of comfort without losing the character of the old farmhouse in the new re-construction. The modern amenities we like to integrate are floor heating, natural air systems and efficient insulation wherever it is possible, like in the roof and windows. We also like to finish the bathrooms with electric floor heating to avoid damp and to create a comfortable ambient in the colder months of the year. In our concept, we even try to avoid the use of air-conditioning and prefer to install as much as possible the best insulation solutions. In the new floor plan of the house we have respected the inner centre wall and created a large open living area with an integrated modern kitchen as the heart of the house. Even so we have based our concept on the situation of the house itself and on the east located fields. When you enter the house, we want you to feel seduced to enjoy the exterior surroundings and views. On the south location we have positioned the living-study room and the patio overlooking the pool and the spectacular horizon view. On the west side of the house we have positioned the master bedroom; although it is located next to the country road it will not give any nightly disturbance due to the fact that only a few lower located neighbors are using this road. The advantage as well that this area it slightly fresher a night.

Modern Guesthouse Option 1: The minimalistic modern version Ă rea Bruta: 16.9m (lenght) x 8.9m (width) Total Area: 150 m2 to a maximum of 168 m2

We have had various thoughts about how we should integrate the guesthouse into the architecture of the main farm house. We came to the conclusion that we like to think that the future owners will use the guesthouse themselves when they have no guests. To achieve this we have developed two options, each of them with its own habitation solution. The guesthouse concept is designed to enjoy the space itself, inviting for meditation and yoga and taking maximum advantage of the nature and views to the coast line. We want to create a view of 180 degrees from the patio terrace of the main house, therefore we have lowered the total structure of the guesthouse with 50cm. From the exterior sight it looks almost like an old ruin wall, from which a hidden guesthouse can be found. The advantage of this construction option is that it offers a possibility to create an XXL roof terrace on which you will have breathtaking views to the valleys and the coastline. In this version we have created a wine cellar, a yoga studio, a large guest apartment with a bedroom and annex bathroom. On the south location we have to respect the Portuguese Building Law, which states that a window has to be built with a minimal distance of 4.5m from the property's border line. To turn around this issue, we created an over roofed terrace where, if desired, easily we can create another guest bedroom by positioning a wall at the end of the terrace. Then, windows can be added to the west and the east, creating a pleasant extra small indoor patio at the end. The guesthouse has its own entrance at the east side and is fully independent of the main house. At the west side we can find a lower located garden, reserved for guests. In this model we have created a optimal privacy for the owners, with a free open view. The fact that the owners will be overlooking the down located apartment guarantees the privacy of the guests as well. The pool can have a horizon overflow (see the various swimming pool options) that falls into a fountain-water feature in the guest's lower garden area.

Rustic Guesthouse Option 2: The traditional rustic version Ă rea Bruta: 16.9m (lenght) x 8.9m (width) Total Area: 150 m2 to a maximum of 168 m2

In this option we have created a different approach; the guesthouse has a rustic wooden roof construction and, within its centre, we created a raised section to bring in more daylight or even breezes of fresh air during the warm summer months. This raised roof section is a design element which can be found in earlier times of Portuguese architecture, it was often used for stables and industrial warehouses. In more tropical zones, like the Caribbean, it is often used as a shaft for ventilation and filtering sunlight. The wooden roof has a structure made of square beams visible from the main living area of the guesthouse. Inside the guesthouse, two spacious bedrooms can be found, each with a private bathroom containing a toilet, a washbasin and a rain shower section. The bathrooms are designed with a small ventilation window. The main living area is supplied with a functional mini kitchen and a small over roofed patio overlooking the lower located garden on the west side. If desired, a fireplace can also be positioned. At the far south end of the guesthouse we have placed the Yoga stretch-out Studio for hours of meditation and workouts. This Studio has its own patio terrace, accessible from the guesthouse. The position of the entrance to the Studio is designed to assure optimal privacy to whoever is inside. As an option, the windows of the Studio can be supplied with a semi-opaque foggy layer for bringing in daylight only. All windows are framed in Aluminum, for future low maintenance and comfort. At the east side we have added large Aluminum shutters and at the west side we have created a steel frame patio covered with bamboo -wood layers. Heating or cooling of the Guesthouse will be managed by air heat pump conditioners. The bathrooms will be supplied with electric floor heating.

Sleeping

In the master bedroom of the farmhouse we created a little world on its own: at the south it has a small over roofed patio for lazy book reading, having an afternoon nappy or just an area to be on your own. To us, the bedrooms have to be the area for "bons sonhos" (the Portuguese words for "sweet dreams"). Can you imagine the nightingale singing his sweet tones in the next located Alfarroba tree? Tell us then who is the Emperor? The bedroom itself is spacious enough to place several wardrobe dressers. These can be in simple natural old wood or, in a refreshing twist, have its doors illustrated with Vivaldi's Four Seasons music score. See the attached images for a better feeling of what we want to achieve. The bed space can be at a size of 180x200cm. Due to the climate zone, we suggest our clients to purchase pure latex bed mattresses. Next to the bedroom, a large bathroom can be found with double washbasins, a step-in shower and a massive bath. Various options in material can be provided. In our option, we prefer to work with tadelakt or, on certain areas, like the shower, to use tiled floors. The finishing of the bedroom interior can be done with old antique look-a-like shutters. The access to the bedroom is made through the multifunctional dining room and is reached by a small staircase.

Bathing organic option

In this option the access to the bedroom & bathroom comes from the main house entrance hall. The bathroom can be seen as a wet area for spacious showering and bathing. The bathtub stands free on its own and functions as a pearl-like object in the space itself. The surrounded curve-shaped walls can be layered with small glossy tiles or can be plastered with a tadelakt layer of any color. The tadelakt finishing will be softglossy and smooth, which will feel like a second skin because of the polishing of the material. Due to the use of special water grills in the floor, water can run everywhere without causing overflow problems For improved privacy, but also for functional reasons, we have out placed the toilet section into the entrance area of the bedroom, next to the entrance hall.

Bathing hamman option

In this option, the access to the bedroom and bathroom comes as well from the main house entrance hall. The Hamman bathroom has a multifunctional large step-in bath with two rain showers and mini-showers. In the hot summers, the bath can be filled up with cold water for a quick refreshment. The size of the Hamman bath is 200x100 cm. The walls can be plastered with various products like "pastilhas" tiles, theme tiles or even so with a tadelakt layer of any desired color. Above the bath we would like to integrate small roof windows to bring in the daylight. In this bathroom option, the toilet and the bidet are integrated. A large stone sink on top of the countertop will function as a washbasin large enough to be used by two persons simultaneously. The room located next to the Hamman will function as an office or library, and the south located front room will then serve as the main dining area. The main benefit in both of these bathroom options is that they allow the access to the master bedroom to be totally independent and connected to the main house entrance hall.

Cooking

The kitchen is located in the heart of the house and has its own access to the garden-fields at the east side. We have designed an L-shaped kitchen with various options available to the client such as the kitchen setting and finishing. Our preferred idea is to finish the kitchen with a concrete polishing and to use recycled old wooden doors with indoor simple shelves, all combined together with some industrial kitchen machines. In the 3D model below, we show the spatial possibilities of the kitchen and how it functions as well in routing and logistics. In this layout we have encased a large American fridge in the newly rebuilt northern wall. In the area of the former stable we have created a storage room/pantry where the wash machine, the solar water deposit and other items can be installed. Our goal is to combine all technique features in the storage room, releasing the space for you. The storage room will have its own entrance from the north-west side, which is handy to bring in groceries or for technical maintenance purposes. At the front of the sink we place a centre buffet piece, useful to bring in fresh goods, cut vegetables or to integrate a dishwasher. In the centre of the kitchen area we have designed a seating bench, from where there is a spacious view through the living room and to the south located patio terrace. Combined with a large round colonial table, this will be the perfect spot for morning breakfasts. On the right entrance area of the living room we have positioned a large antique storage cabinet for glasses, chinaware and other decoration elements. Because of its location, this cabinet can also serve the nearby dining area.

dining

That's what friends are for. For good times, for bad times but especially for cozy times. With friends and your beloved ones, you share your best moments in life, like drinking your best wines and spending long hours seated at an inviting dinner table. For all this, we have created a room which can be used ideally for dinners; it offers sufficient space for a large dining table with 6 to 8 seats. For improved comfort, we have created a natural open fireplace, as opposed to the closed fireplace we have installed in the main living room, which will serve as well as a central heating system for the main house. The dining room fireplace can be classical or even so can be a table-height level fireplace for natural fire or for indoor grilling your codornizes (quails).

Living

This area is located at the south of the house next to the patio. We have designed the living room with large windows to bring in as much daylight as possible, although the veranda in the south area protects the sun from shining in directly. At the east, where the sun rises in the morning we have created a large window that provides beautiful views to the fields and gives access to the kitchen outdoor located terrace. In the 3D model below, you can examine that we have created sufficient space for various furniture elements like large L-shaped benches, seating chairs and a television corner lounge. Feel free to position your own style of interior, so we can decide where to install the final position of technical connections for electricity, TV, telephone and Internet. In Portugal the living area is needed mostly for the cold evenings during winter times. For that reason, the position of the fire place is almost central in the seating section; this fire place will function as the central heater for the house and that is why it has a closed system. Due to the large wall opening created next to the fireplace, an important spacious aspect has been achieved, encouraging the social contact with the main kitchen area.

working

In all our house designs, we do our most to avoid the stresses and hassles of modern day life, like ringing phones or SMS beeps. Actually, we like to create a communication zone in the house from where you can use the Internet and make your low-cost Voip phone calls over the computer. In this communication room you can store your books in the large library cabinet, keep your personal papers or store a built-in safe lock. The library is as well the ideal spot to sit back in a nice big comfortable sofa seat chair for long hours of reading and being on your own. We think it is wise not to open up the whole living area at the south to one full space. Please bare in mind that we have added an extra 3 meters on the living room, resulting from the connection of the existing oven house.

swimming

The tank pool is located in the place of the old cistern, in front of the main house. This swimming pool will have an oustanding view towards the Algarvian coastline and country fields. The horizon sight is enhanced by the new 50cm lowered level of the guesthouse. The pool area design enriches the strenght of the architecture with various details such as the use of old stones and straight lines, providing visual stimulation and connecting the main house, the swimming pool terrace and the guesthouse. The swimming pool is a zone for outdoor fun and relax. We have designed three options for you to choose at your taste. In all options, the pool size is 4x7m. In the first option, we have placed the swimming pool at left, connected directly to the guesthouse wall. This design features a water fountain placed in the guesthouse wall and a hidden overflow that drops water from the swimming pool to the water feature in the guesthouse private terrace. The second option shows a centered swimming pool connected to a stone wall that provides extra privacy to your guests in the guesthouse private deck. From this wall, three small water fountains can be placed. The swimming pool is also center-located in the third option, however, it has an overflown side that constantly pours water to a water feature in the guest's terrace. It will mirror the horizon views with spectacular effect.

Sleeping

In the various options for the guesthouse, we made an effort to design good proportionate rooms for your guests to have a wonderful night of rest. We see the comfort of these rooms in simple things like a good bed to sleep on and a functional wardrobe for keeping your clothes. In the one bedroom version, we have made a room model with old re-used wood as cabinets placed side by side next to the bed. Above the bed, we would like to apply a large image printed on canvas, such as friendly henna hands waving and inviting you to have a peaceful rest. The setting of the dĂŠcor will be mostly in pure white, reinforcinging the simplicity of the recycled furniture and creating a soft, tender and natural atmosphere. In the guesthouse version with two bedrooms, the decoration should be in the same proposed style.

bathing

The guest's bathroom will be equipped with sufficient space for showering, a washbasin and a private toilet. The floor will have electric floor heating and, if preferred, we can also add electric towel heaters. The hot water for the guest house has to be provided by a gas based water heater. This is a sufficient solution for your guests, instead of installing an expensive solar system. The gas heater will only function when you guests are on your property, providing hot water on demand whenever it is needed.

modern option

We see this guesthouse as a multifunctional area, a place which you can use for yourself when there are no visitors. It is a lovely place to work and even so it can be used as an atelier or a space for your favorite occupation. In this page, we illustrate how the living room can function in a modern guesthouse setting. A large area, with simple straight lines and lots of natural light provided by glass walls, combined with sophisticated furniture and lightning will provide luxuriuous enjoyment both to your guests and yourself.

rustic option

In our works, we try to conceive spaces (like guesthouses), that not only are used to host guests but also are a part of a total project, inviting its use for multiple purposes. The rustic version of the guesthouse is enriched with a beautiful wooden roof structure that we have designed in order to recreate the soothing and comfort effect of old countryhouses. For the living room, we foresee an area that can be used as a lounge, dining and rest in the warm summer afternoons, but as well in freezing winter nights.

Roof + Wood + Round beams + Cork insulation + Pre-shaped panels + Antique roof tiles

Solar + Minimum 300 liters + Circulation system on clock for direct hot water

We want to insulate the house on various ways. We have to construct a total new wooden roof, well insulated with cork and with ventilation spaces between the tiles. For the roof we use mainly a cement pre-shaped wave panel to support the antique roof tiles on top of it. The cork plates between the wooden planks and the wave panels give an excellent protection for cold and heat. We always use as much as possible nature-friendly building materials in our designs.

We like to install a solar installation system for the household water. It can be connected as well with the fire place water heater. Our preference is to use a Solvis Luna solar system with a deposit tank of 300 liters.

Telephone + Internet + Satellite

Depรณsitos Polietileno Horizontais

Although the house has in principle a Licenรงa de Habitaรงao it will need new built-in communication elements during its reconstruction. The Portuguse Building Law requires that every new house has a built-in circuit of Cable TV, Satellite, Internet & Telephone central controlled. Although nowadays mostly all of these can be installed wireless, this law still applies. Because we are making such a change in the house structure, we think it would be wise to provide the main house and guesthouse with this wiring. Together with the client, we will position the final layout of all communication locations, plugs and switches. On the roof we will install a satellite connection.

We prefer to install for this project a water deposit with a minimum of 3000 liters for the storage of water. This deposit can function as well during the winter months for storage of rain water coming from the roofs. Next to the deposit we install a water softener and a pressure pump that guarantees pressure and safety for using this water for household purposes like showering, etc. Drinking water, however, has to be purchased in bottles.

Flooring Floor + Floor heating + Concrete base + Santa Catarina tiles In the old house we will bring a total new enforced concrete floor with an insulation layer for the floor heating tubes on top. Then again on top of this, we position the rustic Santa Catarina floor tiles. At the final part of the flooring construction, we wish to give a wax-seal finishing to the floor tiles.

We want to install a pre-installation for stand alone air-conditioners, mainly in the bedroom, library and, if preferred, in the living room. Due to the height of the roof and the use of natural insulation materials, we don't expect air conditioning to be needed. However, we prefer to pre-install the above mentioned rooms with the required parts and tubes. All rooms will be provided with a tube for natural air ventilation, build in the exterior walls.

At the north located portal, we want to install the electricity meters and the main water connection. These meters will be integrated in the rebuild stone walls.

cooking

We want to install a Jolly-Mec system, a water based closed heating system. You can either heat with grain wood pellets, wood or, if desired, combine this system with solar panels. For more info, please see www.jolly-mec.it

On gas + Propane For cooking, we provide a gas connection and a gas house ventilated by persiana-shutters. The gas connection will then need a gas certificate.

septic tank The house and the guesthouse require a proper sewage system, connected to a ecological organic friendly tank. The grey water will be running through a drainage under the ground. The location of this tank will be far enough from the main house and is placed lower in the field. Because Casa Monte Velho stands in a restricted ambient area, the water residue needs to be cleared at least 94 %. The company who delivers the fossa ecologica will provide a certificate for this and will advise us about the best position for the tank. For more info, check www.goldenfibra.net
