Celebrating James Clifford Hjelm

58+ years of Bridal Design Excellence

James Clifford Hjelm – An iconic designer known throughout the world for designing stunning wedding gowns with the utmost quality and detailing, while creating the chic silhouettes that captured brides’ desires and many in the industry envied.

Mr. Hjelm started his journey at the New England School of Design and upon graduation joined House of Bianchi in 1960. He moved to Priscilla of Boston in 1962 through 1981, where he developed his philosophy to strike a perfect balance between classic styling and modern fashion flare. During his tenure Mr. Hjelm had the honor of dressing two Presidential daughters, Luci Johnson (66’) and Julie Nixon (69’), for their White House weddings.

Mr. Heljm often cites the Johnson wedding, in which he designed and created the bridal party’s gowns in the Lincoln Bedroom, as one of his finest moments of his career.

In 1981 he joined Galina-Bouquet, Inc. as Head Designer and created a “name” for himself. Mr. Hjelm’s name had become so well-recognized that the company featured him exclusively in their advertising, which helped his name become even more well known.

Mr. Hjelm went out on his own and developed his own company in 1987, Jim Heljm’s Private Collection. Soon, the company was incorporated and offered stock, becoming the first Bridal house in the country to be publicly held. This company would grow and become JLM. In 2004, Mon Cheri Bridals brought Mr. Hjelm on to develop The James Clifford Collection as a design force by creating innovative designs for over seventeen (17) years. Steve Lang, CEO at Mon Cheri Bridals, admiring mentioned that “Jim Hjelm and I worked together for many years, and I cherish our friendship. This man is an industry icon, from the early days of dressing president’s daughters until today, Jim has maintained the same warm and loving attitude towards everyone. It is easy to say that Jim is one of the finest individuals to ever grace this industry.”

James Clifford Hjelm retired in 2018 and is enjoying life in Florida.
