Sheridan Craft & Design 2014

Creo: ‘to create’ or ‘make grow’ Welcome to the 2014 Sheridan ‘Craft and Design’ Graduate Exhibition. As emerging craftspeople and designers in ceramics, glass, furniture and textiles, we are unified by the ethos of process and careful reflection which has been instilled in each of us during these last three years. Mentorship, peer support and shared studio practice have offered an unparalleled opportunity for growth. We have learned that surprises can inspire, collaboration can exhilarate and that an artist’s journey is never predictable. This exhibition displays the rich diversity of thought and process we as students have, and guides our transition from student to professional. Thank you for joining us.

Program The Craft and Design program at Sheridan has been setting the standard for craft education in Canada since being founded in 1967. A close connection with the arts community, award-winning faculty, fully-equipped studios and a renowned curriculum all work to help students develop a critical sense of design and outstanding technical skills while at Sheridan.

The three-year Craft and Design program offers intensive, hands-on training in four studio areas: ceramics, furniture, glass and textiles. These are complemented with additional studios of design, drawing and photography. The studio experience at Sheridan is supported by academic studies in craft history, communications, supervised independent research, visits from established artists and exhibition opportunities for students. In the third year of the program students address the important goal of self-employment as a craftsperson. Through lectures and coursework, Sheridan students examine market dynamics in the craft and design arena as well as case studies of professional craft or consulting design practices. Upon graduation, Sheridan students are among the most talented and best prepared emerging artists and designers in Canada.

Foreword present active creō, present infinitive creāre, perfect active creāvī, supine creātum I. I create, make, produce. II. I beget, give birth to. III. I prepare, cause. IV. I choose. In its role as one of Canada’s most significant and long-standing craft education institutions, Sheridan’s Craft and Design Program is once again celebrating its graduating students with an exhibition to showcase their talents. As a program that invests as much in building community as it does in training through hands-on experience, the Ceramic, Furniture, Glass and Textile studios are able to offer a firm foundation for stepping out into a world where the creation of objects occurs within a complex global system of markets, industries and economies. It is this foundation that allows us to look forward to what comes next for these graduates, and endeavor to continue supporting them in their choice to become creators of material culture.

As a verb, creo conveys an action – a state of becoming in relation and in reaction to the world. The action ‘to create’ is undoubtedly what takes place in the program’s unique studio environment and in the experience of exploring techniques and material processes, which through interactions with instructors and fellow students further offers inspiration, insight and skill. At the same time, creo is a fitting term in that its original meaning is ‘to make grow’, and in the subsequent pages you will not only see accomplished work that has been fostered throughout the program, but the beginnings of careers from which new work and new directions will grow. Within the context of this exhibition catalogue, perhaps one of the most thought-provoking

meanings of the term creo is its suggestion of the act to choose. To choose to study craft and design, to strive towards becoming a professional maker, is to take up the challenge, and in the words of the program description itself, to use materials and ideas to transform environmental and human potential. This is no small task, and certainly not an easy choice. Yet for each of the following graduates to create, to grow and to choose is to commit to becoming an integral part of society, and to share their skills and talents in order to offer the world much needed inquisitiveness, health, comfort, beauty, care and delight. This year’s graduates are privileged to join a growing number of successful makers that likewise have roots in the challenges and rewards of studying at Sheridan, and on behalf of Craft Ontario and the overall craft and design community, it is our sincere hope that the 2014 Craft and Design graduates also find success in all that they do.

Janna Hiemstra is Curator and Director of Programs at Craft Ontario (formerly the Ontario Crafts Council), a member-based organization that supports and advocates for professional craft practice. Throughout her seven years with Craft Ontario she has been involved in many different aspects of the organization, including publications and international projects. She currently manages all aspects of the Craft Ontario Gallery, the annual Craft Awards program, as well as lecture and conference programming. She also serves as a Committee member for the Canadian Society of Decorative Arts.

Acknowledgements The graduates of the Sheridan Craft and Design program would like to thank Jess Riva Cooper and Isabel Stukator for their advice and assistance in coordinating the catalogue and graduation exhibition. Thank you to Mike Young for his help with the layout of the catalogue and Aidan Mayner for the new design. Janna Hiemstra, thank you so much for generously accepting the task of writing the foreword to our graduation exhibition catalogue. To the entire non-studio faculty, we would like to express our sincere appreciation for each of your contributions to the cultivation of our education. Thank you also to the administration and support staff, Nancy Heath, Lynne Murray and Mary Cator, Associate Dean Heather Whitton, and Program Coordinator Gord Thompson. A very special thanks to Jamie Owen for curating our shows and Owen Colborne for his expertise and guidance in the photo studio. We could not have looked so great without you.

Ceramics The graduates of this year’s Ceramics class would like to acknowledge the whole Ceramics faculty for their constant encouragement and support during our three years together. Thank you for instilling in us, in different ways, the qualities that will contribute to our journeys as ceramic artists: Bruce Cochrane, Gord Thompson, Tony Clennell, Marc Egan, Steve Heinemann, Kathy Kranias, Cathleen Nicholson, Linsday Montgomery, Janet Mcpherson and Drew Ippoliti. Being able to share space with these individuals are experiences that will prove to be invaluable and we could not thank them enough. A special thank you to our Studio Head, Linda Sormin whose tenacious energy and constant questions have pushed us all to exceed beyond what we had ever imagined. And last, but certainly not least, another special thank you to our enthusiastic and dedicated studio technician, Hugh DouglasMurray, for always taking the time to

provide us with the most thorough answers for even the simplest of questions. We would also like to thank Jamie Owen, Lynne Murray and Owen Colborne, who’ve helped us to see our work beyond our studios. Furniture The Furniture Studio graduates of 2014 are thankful for the knowledge, encouragement, and support from all of the faculty, technicians, and instructors that have guided us for the past three years. Special thanks to Peter Fleming, Robert Diemert, Connie Chisholm, Kirsten White, and Scott Eckert. Each of you constantly pushes us to explore more and extend our knowledge. Your dedication has provided us with the skills and work ethic to become thoughtful designers and makers. Thank you to Heidi Earnshaw and Scott Eunson for your professional wisdom and expertise. We would also like to recognize the support course instructors for helping us to acquire a

wide range of skills outside of the studio. Thank you to all of the guest critics and professional designers who have shared your knowledge and experience with us. Thank you to Jamie Owen for all of your gallery work in the past three years. Finally, we would like to thank the YMCA and Hilditch Architect for including us in the Vanauley Street Project. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to collaborate and learn from this experience. Thank you. Glass As our third year draws to a close, many of us now need to stop denying that we will be leaving Sheridan and entering the real world. It’s been a wonderful start to our journey in glass and the time has come to thank those that have guided us along the way. Special thanks goes to Jason Cornish, for keeping our studio running smoothly and answering any technical questions we can imagine, and to Koen Vanderstukken, for teaching us to think creatively about every 99

thing we see and forcing us to answer that most dreaded question, “Why glass? We would not have made it this far without the instruction and encouragement from Andy Kuntz, Paula Vandermey, Sally McCubbin, Brad Sherwood, Amanda Skalski, Lucy Roussel and Orion Arger, as well as our first year teaching assistants Andrew Beauchamp and Silvia Taylor. Your patience has helped develop our perseverance, and we express our greatest thanks to you all. Textiles We would like to express our thanks to everyone involved with the textiles studio. To our technologist Janelle Guthrie, whom without her presence; our studio could not have run so effectively. To our studio head Rachel Miller, for providing us with a broader perspective of the craft community. Their involvement in our education at Sheridan College has provided us with positive motivation that will shoulder us as we enter into a new phase of not only our careers, but also our lives.

We would also like to give thanks to our instructors: Thea Haines, Isabel Stukator, Sharon Epstein, Kate Busby, Anna Zygowski, Kerry Croghan, Roisin Fagan, Ana Galindo, Kate Jackson; who through the years have kept us on the right track and helped us realize our full potential. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the guests and lecturers that graciously came to the studio for workshops and critiques and have left us with valued experience and wisdom. As we begin our careers we can be reassured that the skills and knowledge we were provided with will carry us through our future endeavors. As we look back at our time at Sheridan, there is no doubt we have learned the ability to find inspiration in every stitch we pull. Without the support and positive feedback we received from everyone in the studio, we could not have grown so much in only three years. For that there is no amount of words to express our appreciation. Thank you.

Sponsors The students would also like to extend a special thank you to our sponsors who helped make this catalogue and the graduate exhibition possible.
