THE SH PE OF THINGS
4
THE SHAPE OF THINGS The Shape of Things is a reflective representation of our current work and our progression as craftspeople. Textiles, Ceramics, Furniture, and Glass each have their own distinct characteristics but a devotion to process, material, and creation binds us together and unifies our efforts as craftspeople. Each practitioner shapes their material to express a thought, feeling or mannerism; we are also bound by our shared transition from student to professional. This catalogue captures three years of growth and suspends it in time as a reminder of all that came before and the shape of things to come.
FOREWORD “The Shape of Things offers a world of potential in its title. It invites us to consider objects, their diversity and the attendant thoughts and processes that have led to such work. The title also implies that beyond this experience of crafted objects, there is a future to consider. As the graduates progress from student life into the professional world, there is anticipation. We have had the privilege of experiencing Sheridan culture: one of us as a graduate of the Sheridan Craft and Design program, and, both as professionals. We have been impressed by the exploratory approach, supported by an intensive studio component, which allows students to develop the problem-solving skills that will form the core of each individual’s success. These graduates have learned to express their unique insights by using hand and brain in equilibrium to skillfully work with their tools
2
and materials. Each displays a varied approach and understanding within their chosen discipline, and, illustrates a capacity to progressively expand and adapt their skills. The questions and distinctions surrounding contemporary craft and design are currently intermeshing as never before. There are new challenges of how both craft and design will continue to convey relevance to our culture and economy following the effects of globalisation. The students are enriched with an ethos which encourages conceptual and material explorations alongside the refining and, when necessary, the re-thinking of process. Heading into the larger world, these designers and makers must continue to communicate value if they are to introduce more hand-crafted objects. There is significant hope for this based on the thoughtful works we find here. Graduation will bring further defining and exploration for each individual as they grapple with the context, content and the many challenges of
their chosen field. In “The Shape of Things” we find emerging artisans presenting unique points of view by addressing the things which matter most; self expression, investigation of process, form, materials, function, utility, and, narrative. Through this exhibition and catalogue, the 2011 graduates of Sheridan Institute’s Craft and Design program are sharing their defining thoughts as manifested in their work. Looking to the future, we can watch with interest and cheer them on their paths as they continue to forge distinctive perspectives, skills and meaningful objects. We feel honoured to have been asked to bear witness to that commitment. We don’t doubt that things, in these graduates’ hands, are looking in very good shape.
Shaun Moore is a graduate of the Sheridan Craft and Design Furniture program and Julie Nicholson is a graduate of the Queensland College of Art, Australia. Together, as MADE, they maintain a partnership engaged in custom design, commissions, collaborations and a variety of curatorial projects. MADE is a design company committed to the representation of compelling functional works made in Canada by independent Canadian designers.

PROGRAM The Crafts and Design Program at Sheridan has been setting the standard for crafts education in Canada since being founded in 1967. A close connection with the arts community, award-winning faculty, fully-equipped studios and a renowned curriculum all work to help students develop a critical sense of design and outstanding technical skills while at Sheridan.
The three-year Crafts and Design Program offers intensive, hands-on training in four studio areas: ceramics, furniture, glass and textiles. These are complemented with additional studios of design, drawing and photography. The studio experience at Sheridan is supported by academic studies in craft history, communications, supervised independent research, visits from established artists and exhibition opportunities for students. In the third year of the program students address the important goal of self-employment as a craftsperson. Through lectures and coursework Sheridan students examine market dynamics in the crafts and design arena along with undertaking case studies of running a professional craft or consulting design practice. At graduation, Sheridan students are among the most talented and best prepared emerging artists and designers in Canada.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This extraordinary catalogue is the result of many, yet produced by the hard work of a special dedicated few.
We also extend our gratitude to Janna Hiemstra at the OCC gallery for providing a space for us to showcase our work.
The 2011 graduates of the Craft and Design program are indebted to Isabel Stukator and Monica Bodirsky for their advice and assistance in coordinating the catalogue and graduation show. Thank you to Mike Young for his help with the graphic design of the catalogue. Thanks to Julie Nicholson and Shaun Moore for generously accepting the task of writing the foreword to this catalogue.
Finally we would like to acknowledge the support of our family and friends. Without it our efforts would not have been realized to their fullest potential.
To the entire non-studio faculty, we would like to express our thanks for contributing in some way to the cultivation of our education. Thank you also to the administration and support staff, Associate Dean Heather Whitton, Nancy Heath and Mary Cator. A very special thanks to Jamie Owen for curating our shows and Owen Colbourne for his expertise and assistance in the photo studio.
