WELCOME TO ST VINCENT COLLEGE Thank you for considering St Vincent College as your further education provider. It is an exciting time to be joining the College. Alistair has been involved in careers guidance for 20 years and holds the Post Graduate Level 6 Qualification in Careers Guidance and the NVQ 4 in Information, Advice & Guidance. He is a full member with the Career Development Institute and is on their Professional Register as well as being short listed for their Careers Advisor of the Year. Alistair manages our comprehensive Careers Education Programme including guidance interviews and has recently won the Hampshire Education Award for his outstanding services to the national careers provision.

Libby has worked in the careers services at the college for 5 years and as an ex-St Vincent student, has a unique insight in the progression opportunities open to students. She completed both A-Levels and BTEC qualifications and went onto Winchester University to study and complete her degree in Stage and Arts Management. Libby co-ordinates and organises all careers related events at the College and can also offer information and advice to students.

INTERNAL PROGRESSION YOUR FUTURE STARTS HERE At St Vincent College students are encouraged and supported to achieve the highest level qualifications before they move on their next stage in life as a young adult. Our curriculum offer enables students to study a range of subjects suited to their individual interests and aspirations whilst also affording them internal progression opportunities. This means that students can remain at college and enhance the academic ability by progressing through the various levels of qualifications we have available. As such students can study courses suited to their level of ability when they join us knowing that they have the opportunity to progress to higher level study upon completion of these qualifications.

STUDENT SUPPORT We pride ourselves on our ability to support our students, whatever their needs. We have an extensive student support network with a vast amount of experience in dealing with the stresses and problems of young adults. If you have any problems at all, be they academic, personal or emotional, we have someone you can go to who can steer you in the right direction, help you overcome any obstacles and succeed.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT We recognise that families can sometimes find supporting their children’s education financially challenging. For students from families with lower levels of income we are able to provide support with bus travel to college as well as free college meals for those who are eligible.
TRAVEL SUPPORT We offer free travel to students who match our support criteria. To find out more, head to our website, speak to a member of staff at our open evening events, or call us on 023 9258 8311.
LIFE SUPPORT We know life outside the college can sometimes be challenging and we know how this can affect a student’s college life, that’s why we have an experienced Welfare and Safeguarding Team who are here to support problems with mental health, finances and relationships. You can visit the team on site at any time to discuss these issues.
LEARNING SUPPORT We are there every step of the way to support the learning needs of individual students. We offer one to one coaching from teachers, academic mentors to support independent study and lastly, we have SASS, who are our Specialist Academic and Study Support Team, here to help students with learning difficulties and disabilities.

TRAVEL TO ST VINCENT COLLEGE A 9:30 am start and local transport links not only means your college day starts later, but it’s also simple to get to us.
THE FIRST BUS SERVICE Getting to St Vincent College could not be easier. The College is serviced by several bus routes and has plenty of free parking for cars, mopeds and bicycles available on site.
TRAVEL BY BUS Students enrolling with us will benefit from a range of bus travel options. Information to purchase a bus pass is available on the First Bus Website. The cost of the bus pass can be covered by the College for students eligible for Financial Support and if they live at least one mile away for the campus. The bus pass provided can be used on all local First Hampshire bus routes, including the Eclipse (E1/E2) service, this will provide students with a safe and efficient way of travelling to and from College.

STUDENT VOICE
Joining the Student Voice gives you an opportunity to collate and share the students’ voice, ensuring that opinions are heard in order to support and influence the way the college develops. It is a great opportunity to take part in college life, carrying out activities such as organising the end of year event, fund-raising for local organisations and litter picking. One of the student voice aims is to support the local community. The Student Voice consists of students throughout the whole college, they are expected to attend weekly meetings with the group and any additional meetings with Senior Management Team and Governors. FILM AND DIGITAL ARTS A-LEVEL If you are interested in the creative possibilities of film and moving image, this course is for you! You will develop a keen imagination using industry standard software to create your own original films. You will be introduced to a wide-ranging subject matter referencing media, society, historical and political developments to inspire your practical work. You will learn how to approach theories and imagery in an analytical way; to write fluently about subject matter; to discuss and share ideas confidently; and to present your findings in a visual and professional way using digital technology. The knowledge and understanding of how moving images relate to time and place in which they were made and to their social and cultural context, underpins this course. It is an ideal combination with our A-level photography and graphics course. Duration: Two years Minimum entry requirements: Five GCSEs at Grades 4 or above including a creative subject, media or film or a creative Portfolio for interview. Possible combinations: If combined with other creative A-Levels Photography or Graphics or Fine Art, you will increase your opportunities of gaining direct entry to creative degree courses. Emphasis is placed on how imaginative, intellectual and aesthetically composed your outcomes are. We will introduce you to advanced drawing and painting methods in individual and creative ways, as well as use print making and mixed media to extend your expressive possibilities.

This is a very creative course that aims to enable you to work with a broad range of media and use innovative techniques in your own original manner.

GRAPHICS A-LEVEL If you are passionate about communicating using images and words this is the course for you! Graphic design combines creative and intellectual skills to communicate in visual ways. We will develop your skills in using images, photography and text both in traditional and digital ways. Advertising, illustration and promotion are all areas to which Graphic Design is crucial. The course concerns visual communication in the real world through using 2 Dimensional Graphic Design. Duration: Two years Minimum entry requirements: Five GCSEs at Grade 4 – 9. Grade 4 or above in GCSE Art or Graphics is advisable or a Creative Portfolio for interview. Possible combinations: If combined with other creative A-Levels eg. Fine Art or Photography or Film and Digital Arts, you increase your opportunities of gaining direct entry to creative degree courses. Likely next step opportunities: Art college foundation courses. Other Higher Education courses.
GCSE Graphics has a profound impact on the way we live our lives. This course will encourage you to explore different forms and processes and communicate using a variety of traditional and modern techniques to produce creative graphic outcomes. By the end of the course you will be able to explore, understand and apply visual language and terminology to a variety of tasks such as poster design, visuals for promotion/ advertising and illustration. Duration: One year Minimum entry requirements: Five GCSEs at Grade 2 or above. If you have not yet gained Grade 4 or above in English and/ or Maths, this will form part of your course. PHOTOGRAPHY A-LEVEL Do you want to communicate in a visual and creative way? This course will make you confident with film and digital photography. Experimentation is encouraged through practical lessons and gallery visits. Digital sketchbooks are used to record ideas and artist’s work. Previous knowledge of photography is not essential, nor owning your own camera, just a passion for making your own images! The photography department provides most of the equipment necessary. We don’t expect all students to have their own digital camera, but you might decide to invest in one if you become serious about the subject as it will aid your ability to make more work independently. You can choose to do either single Business (equivalent to one A level) or the extended diploma (equivalent to three A levels, a fulltime course). The extended diploma is ideal for students with a keen interest in business, how they are developed, how they work and how they make a profit. Students on the extended diploma may wish to go into employment, study business at university or go on to create their own businesses. Are you interested in what different types of crime take place in our society and what kinds of crime exist, about which we know very little? How do we decide what behaviour is criminal? You will examine the nature of different types of crime and problems concerning its measurement and distribution, whilst looking at the popular images of crime in the media, the creation and utility of official and unofficial crime statistics, and theories about the causes of crime. Criminology explores contemporary theoretical and policy debates on domestic violence as a social problem and crime. Topics include partner abuse, hate crime and honour crimes. PERFORMING ARTS LEVEL 3 SINGLE If you have an interest in the Performing Arts and wish to become a professional performer or work in the Performance Industry then this multi-disciplinary course is for you. This is a highly practical course in which you will study a variety of theatrical disciplines including acting, dance, musical theatre, devising shows, physical theatre and even circus skills. You may already have a qualification in Drama, Music or Dance but this is NOT a requirement of the course. Whatever skills and experience you bring with you will be developed and improved through practical workshops and public performances. The course suits dedicated and enthusiastic students with a genuine passion for performing. You will take part in regular classes where you will develop your core technique, applying your skills and analysing and evaluating your progress through logbooks and practice diaries. The majority of your assessment will take place via the public performance of your work either in one of St Vincent’s dedicated theatre spaces or at other local professional venues. You will learn how to research, develop and prepare roles for performance across a range of theatrical styles in a mixture of student and teacher led projects. You will need to work consistently throughout the course in order to learn lines and choreography and the ability to work both independently and also be effective in a team is vital. These practical skills will be supported with a variety of theoretical lessons, theatre trips and workshops from visiting companies designed to expand and broaden your view of the Performing Arts.

Now that we have our new community learning project here at St Vincent College, we can more easily ensure extra support if you should need it. FACILITIES IN COLLEGE All adult and higher education courses are now located in the Clocktower building at the front of the College. Many local buses stop directly outside this building. VOCATIONAL LEARNING St Vincent College offers a variety of Vocational Qualifications at different levels, for different occupational areas. These qualifications are assessed in the workplace.
NVQs IN THE WORKPLACE Vocational Qualifications are Work Based Qualifications. Work Based qualifications are qualifications you take whilst working. All work based learning students are allocated an assessor who will support you 1-1 with your vocational qualification. Your assessor will plan work that needs to be completed with you, provide you with feedback, carry out reviews and maintain regular contact with you. Meetings with your Assessor can be in the workplace or at St Vincent College. We will work with you to support your learning and work needs and the delivery of the course offers flexibility. A voluntary work placement or employment in an appropriate setting is a Mandatory requirement of a vocational qualification. Learners are required to complete mandatory units and there are also optional units which you can choose from, depending on the work setting you work in. You will be required to provide evidence to cover your learning outcomes. This may include: completing written work (answering written questions or completing tasks or assignments), answering verbal questions or having a professional discussion with your assessor. You may be asked to obtain an expert witness testimony from your manager or supervisor. All of the evidence gathered will support you building your portfolio of evidence and all Qualifications are Internally and Externally Quality Assured. On completion you will receive a Nationally Recognised Certificate, from the Awarding Organisation City & Guilds.

The course covers basic skills such as lesson preparation, planning and course design. You will also develop skills in delivering teaching.
PGCE/Cert Ed This evening course offers the recognised teaching qualification that will enable you to pursue a teaching career in the further education and training sector. Accredited by the University of Portsmouth the PGCE/CertEd is offered as a part-time programme at St Vincent College and is designed for teachers who currently work in the further education and training sector. The course encourages you to develop subject-specific knowledge by working closely with your course teachers and work-based subject mentors.

MATHS AND ENGLISH ENGLISH FUNCTIONAL SKILLS MATHS FUNCTIONAL SKILLS Functional Skills English and Maths classes are run over one year and are offered as both daytime and evening classes. Functional Skills is available from Level 3 entry through to Level 2 and students will undertake an initial assessment that will help you to identify the right level for you.

SUPPORT WITH ENGLISH AND MATHS As preparation for starting a Functional Skills course in English or Maths we are offering 10 week introductory courses. Online learning means you are still able to study an accredited qualification without actually having to attend a college or have a work placement. The School of Personalised Learning provides over 200 students with access to a range of specialised and bespoke courses; from pre entry to level 2. Based in the heart of our main campus each of the courses available are specifically tailored to the individual learning and support needs of our students who are taught by specialist teachers within highly supported learning environments with state-of-the-art resources and facilities. Our discrete SEMH provision provides specialist support for young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Our philosophy of inclusion aims to support students to ensure their journey through our College is as smooth, enjoyable and anxiety free as possible. We deliver a holistic approach and bespoke timetable to each pupil supporting both their academic and emotional needs. The provision also provides students with a holistic, nurturing, learning environment along with bespoke timetables, all of which help ensure students are better equipped to manage their own emotions and behaviours whilst also making academic progress. Stepping Stones is offered on a termly basis, our aim is that within this period of time, students are able to develop their confidence enough to begin transitioning back into an alternative provision within the SPL. DIGITAL MEDIA BTEC LEVEL 1 INTRODUCTORY CERTIFICATE
This course provides learners with the opportunity to develop a range of skills in the digital media sector. The course looks at a variety of media aspects whilst also including IT elements that develop the learners skills further. All learners will study core units that focus on key transferable skills such as being organised, where we will discover how to use different organisational techniques and creating a personal development plan, allowing you to look at the many pathways this qualification could lead to. Learners will also take a number of sector units. The content of the sector units offers a broad introduction to the skills and knowledge within the media and IT sectors, allowing the delivery to be practical and active in order to engage learners. For digital media, the units cover activities such as designing for a digital product, creating storyboards, shooting moving image and recording audio. Progression from this course: Skills gained during this year, will allow students to progress onto the Level 1 Diploma, where all the skills they have learned will play a large role in all of their assignments.
Units include: A1: Being Organised During the course you will learn how to stay organized whilst planning a media production. We will look at the different techniques we can use to stay organized and also look at which of these techniques can be applied to your coursework.
A2: Creating a Personal Development Plan As a class, we will look into the different pathways this qualification can lead to. We will research careers that sound interesting and discover more about how you can get into that role. DM5: Creating a Storyboard Storyboards play a crucial part in the pre-production role of any media project. We will look at the challenges directors, actors, camera men and producers face when they are tasked with filming a scene without one and learn how to create an industry standard storyboard using a pre-existing script. DM7: Producing an Advert During this unit we will look at some famous adverts and analyse what makes them good or bad. Then you will have a chance to meet some local businesses and create a short video advertisement for their company. DM10: Shooting a Short Film Pulling together all you have learned from this year, you will write, plan and produce a brand new short film, based on your own idea. You will need to develop you idea from start to finish and will need to consider using both CGI and practical effects.

A3: Working with Others This unit will allow you to work with others within your class in order to put on a large-scale event within the college. You will each have roles and responsibilities to complete in order for the event to be successful.

A4: Researching a Topic Prior to your sector units, you will need to complete research into a genre of video game. This will help you when developing ideas later in the process and provide you with an insight of how to create a successful video game.

DM6: Designing an Interactive Presentation You will design a presentation to be shown in front of a panel. This presentation will depict your ideas for a product and how you expect to make money from this. You can also provide a better understanding of your product to the panel in order for them to support you with this. DM11: Making an Audio Recording You will need to create an advert for your product to appear on radio. The advert will need to explain what the product is within a certain time frame. You can also record audio to use with your product should you wish. DM12: Editing and Sharing a Media Product You will need to create an advert for your product to appear on TV. The advert will need to explain what the product is within a certain time frame.
