Welcome to the Adult Community College at St Vincent, where we offer a range of community learning and qualification courses for everyone. All community courses are located in the north side of our campus within the beautiful Adult Community College building overlooking Portsmouth Harbour.
There is an amazing variety of courses to choose from, many are introductory courses that give you a real taste of a subject and can lead to a place on one of our accredited courses. Many of our learners start one course and enjoy the learning experience so much they become regular studiers with us going on to gain qualifications, go to university and then into a new career.
We want our courses to be as accessible to as many people as possible so they are heavily subsidised to ensure they are low cost. Full or part funding may be available to students who are on a low wage or in receipt of a meanstested benefit. INTRODUCTION TO STUDY SKILLS

FROM STUDENT TO TEACHER Hannah Draper is a popular teacher at Gosport’s Adult Community College and St Vincent College where she teaches community learning courses and an Access to HE course in psychology. Now, after completing her CertEd qualification to become a fullyfledged teacher in 2016, she is an established member of staff, running a number of social sciences courses for adults including criminal investigation, criminal justice, criminology, forensics and forensic psychology. Amazingly that is the very same course the 42-year-old took herself 20 years ago when she began her learning journey here when she came to the college as a 22-yearold single mum struggling with her mental health. Determined to find a career, she completed the access course and went on to the University of Portsmouth to study for a degree. But in 2010 she was back at the community college on a community learning course, struggling again with self-esteem and direction after a marriage went wrong. The course gave her the confidence to study for an NVQ in teaching and, when the course required her to have a classroom placement, she began teaching child psychology at the college.
10
“Someone once told me that if you find a job you love you’ll never work a day in your life again,” says Hannah. “It can be hard work but I just enjoy it so much. In my forensics course we are profiling serial killers while eating a freshly-baked lemon drizzle cake one of the students has bought in – that’s community learning and there is such a mix of people, different characters from all walks of life.” Community college manager Tracey Strong said: “Hannah is an inspiration to her students and her colleagues because she loves learning and is living proof of the doors it can open for people.”

COMMUNITY COURSES
JIM’S STORY Pensioner Jim Fowler is spending his retirement becoming an expert in computers, criminals and coffins after discovering he could study for free at Gosport’s adult community college. The 65-year-old former traffic warden and Sainsbury’s manager said he was bored and frustrated after more than a year of lockdown until his daughter told him about the Adult Community College’s free parttime courses at St Vincent College in Gosport. Since then he has bolstered his knowledge by studying child psychology, word processing and computing and is now embarking on a course about the history of death and burial. “This college is like my second home, the staff are brilliant and are so friendly, knowledgeable and encouraging,” he said.
“I couldn’t believe it is all free because the courses are so well run and so informative.“The computing course was only supposed to be six weeks but Di Ellis who runs it is so good it is now in its 16th week. It’s just really nice being with the same people and learning along with them.” “I’ll carry on doing courses as long as I can because it is great fun and I’d recommend it to anybody, I’d never have guessed that we’d be going back to the classroom in our retirement and enjoying it as much as we do.”
