s this print issue of STYLE (our 198th in a row!) reaches you, our world is beginning to reopen. This “happening” will be met by many with glee and others with trepidation. Our lives may never be the same again, but Americans are a resilient bunch, and we have no doubt we’ll get past this, do the right things, and move forward. We’ve been asked why we didn’t just shut down like many other publications in the region. It’s a fair question, but within 48 hours of our governor’s “shelter-in-place” order, we knew we couldn’t—that there was still good reason to publish information and entertainment and to help maintain some level of normalcy during a time which is anything but. We’ve always taken the position that giving back to our communities is a foundational part of our company. We strive to give back in many ways—be it the arts, education, our youth, or another area that is so, so important: food. It ’s hard to believe that in areas like ours, people go hungry every day, but they do. They are your neighbors. They are young and old; come in all shapes, sizes, and ethnicities; and many/most of them work. It’s why STYLE started a charitable endeavor six years ago, called Guitars4Food where we buy —William Shakespeare guitars, get them autographed, and give them as gifts to large donors. We are proud to tell you that G4F has now raised more than $50,000 since its launch. In two short months, we’ve gone from record employment to record unemployment, but you can help. Whether it’s the Placer Food Bank, Twin Lakes Food Bank, or the Food Bank of El Dorado County—even the smallest donation makes a difference. Supporting our food banks is a wonderful way to give back. Please see this month’s story, “Stepping Up to Serve,” on page 10, to learn about more ways to lend a helping hand. And make no mistake—our ability to give back comes in large part from the support of our advertising partners. Please keep that— and them—in mind when you’re shopping ( locally, we hope). he COVID-19 pandemic has turned the world upside down. Lives have been lost, jobs have been put on hold, and classrooms have been moved to kitchens. We see the heartache and sadness every day, but we’ve also seen the good. We’ve been surrounded with love and help in our community—people and places making a difference, putting smiles on faces, food in stomachs, and helping those in need. Here are just some of organizations giving back locally. (We know there are so many more who have helped, and we THANK YOU!)

familymealroseville.org WHO THEY ARE: City leaders and community members launched this program on May 4 to help feed families (one person or more) during the COVID19 crisis. Bayside Church donated 500 face masks for volunteers, while Roseville Citizens’ Benefit Fund, Placer Community Foundation, Sutter Health Foundation, Rotary Club of Roseville, and Roseville Firefighters (among others) provided funding; and Roseville Transit offers delivery service. HOW THEY’VE HELPED: They’re providing weekly meals to more than 400 Roseville households. In turn, they’re helping residents in need of food and struggling restaurants stay in business. So far, Nixtaco Mexican Kitchen (nixta.co), The Monk’s Cellar (monkscellar.com), and Randy Peter’s Catering (randypeterscatering.com) have participated. FYI: A $20 donation can provide four meals and support local restaurants. Family Meal Roseville

HOW THEY’VE HELPED: They hold ongoing volunteer efforts, including Eskaton’s Telephone Reasurrance Program where trained volunteers call isolated and homebound seniors. HOW THEY’VE HELPED: With assistance from local businesses, restaurants and the community, they’ve fed hundreds of people every day and thousands every month since the shelter-in-place mandate. FYI: Since they are focusing on supporting their community during this time, all of their regular fundraisers have been put on hold, so donations are extremely helpful right now.

Twin Lakes Food Bank

HOW THEY’VE HELPED: They have been doing drive-thru grocery pickup that includes canned goods, nutritional shakes for seniors, and kid-approved food items. During the pandemic, they have served twice the number of households than they do on a normal basis. That's exactly what the Arts Council of Placer County (ACPC) did with their inventive Stay at Home Talent Contest—an online-only contest celebrating the best of quarantine talent across its many forms. According to ACPC Executive Director Jim Crosthwaite, the contest was a natural extension of the organization’s normal scope of work. The active nonprofit is the designated arts partner for Placer County and the California Arts Council, which executes a similar mission on a state-wide scale. ACPC both supports and promotes the arts and artists within Placer County with programs like the Community Arts Grants program, community fundraisers, pop-up artisan markets, and events like art shows, performances, and the popular Placer Artists Studio Tour (rescheduled for the fall.) However, in light of COVID-19, most of ACPC's events and programs have been canceled or postponed to later in the year. But that doesn't mean the Council staff and volunteers aren't hard at work.
Armand Munoz Crosthwaite says the idea for the Stay at Home Talent Contest was formulated at a monthly meeting of ACPC's board of trustees as they discussed how best to serve local artists and art supporters from afar. "This seemed like something that would support creativity, expression, and the arts," says Crosthwaite, "while giving those sheltered at home something to do with their spare time." Several dozen videos were collected over the month-long contest with one winner selected every week. "My reaction was not 'I won!'" says week one's winner, 11-year-old Armand Munoz. "It was more like 'I won?' I was shocked!" He expertly played the whole of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" on the piano in his winning video, which wooed the panel of judges. Munoz had been spending his extra time at home perfecting the entire song, which took him about a year to learn in total. "When I saw the talent show, I thought 'why not put my name into the hat?'" he says. Crosthwaite says that what type of video won on any given week was entirely up to the panel of five community members who served as judges and who changed weekly. Each judge sent his or her top choices back to APAC, which assigned points based on the rankings. The video with the most points was declared the winner. "They're instructed to just judge on what they like best, so judging of talent is very subjective," says Crosthwaite.

Week three's winner took a different approach to displaying her artistic skills. Rather than submitting a performance, local high schooler McKenna Griffith instead made a compilation video of paintings she's been creating while staying at home more. According to Griffith, "I really love nature and being outdoors. Being at home so much during shelter-in-place makes me miss it, so I decided to paint landscapes, which brought the outdoors inside to me." When she learned of the contest, she thought entering would be a good way to share the outdoors with others who are spending most of their time indoors. Her paintings focus mainly on landscapes and scenes of spring and summer.

That was certainly true during week two, when Ron Nabity won for his humorous video diary on what it's like to spend a day quarantining while living alone. Set to the tune of "End of the Line" by English supergroup The Traveling Wilburys, Ron's video includes experiences many people sheltering in place can relate to, like working out at home, rationing toilet paper, and, of course, video chatting in one's pajamas. He actually made the video earlier in the month before the contest was announced, so the timing was fortuitous, especially as access to art institutions has been limited in the shutdown. "I saw the ACPC video contest as a great way to find and share some of the creativity of people who are staying at home," he says, "and I wanted to join in on the fun."
The final winner, Norm Follett, is a musician who splits his time between Auburn and Soda Springs, near Tahoe. His band, Soda Sounds, often plays at events and resorts around the North Lake area, but with the band's calendar freed up and album recording delayed, Follett found himself feeling a bit down, and decided to start playing music on his deck for his dog and cat. His son Zac suggested they film him with a drone as he performed, and the video was born: an original, social distancing-inspired song called "Not Here." "I've been digging into some new techniques, dusting off some old ideas, and creating some new music in this amazing environment on the summit," Follett says. "Normally, I wouldn't have had the time for that kind of reflection and focus, so I'm excited to see how I can use this opportunity to grow in many ways. It feels like lots of people are trying to do the same, and I'm excited to see what they do and create because of it!"

Stay Safe Under the Summer Sun by KOURTNEY JASON
Summer is coming, and it’s time to consider how to protect yourself from skin cancer. Minimizing sun exposure during peak UV hours (10 a.m.-3 p.m.) and wearing a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher are critical to reducing exposure to cancer-causing sunlight. Sunscreens labeled “Broad Spectrum” help protect against both UVA and UVB light, and physical sunscreens, such as zinc oxide, provide excellent protection without chemicals or potential skin allergies. Since we have been sheltering at home since the onset of COVID-19, sunscreen sales worldwide have seen a significant decline. Given such, our skin may be particularly vulnerable to sunburns. So as society opens up again, it is really important to be especially careful by wearing sunscreen, a hat, and sun-protective clothing. If you do get a sunburn, cool showers and frequent moisturization can help with the burning sensation and healing process. Also, drink extra water, because sunburnt skin can lead to dehydration. If blisters form, do not break them open as they will heal naturally. After weeks of sheltering indoors, we are all ready to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Prevention, prevention, prevention. Stay in covered shade whenever possible, use a sunscreen with a minimum 50 SPF, and stay hydrated. It’s important to understand the differences between the sun’s three types of UV rays. UVA travels deeper into the skin. It is the main cause of tanning, skin aging, and a small amount of sunburn. UVB, which is stronger than UVA, stays more superficial in the skin and is the main cause of sunburn. It plays a key role in the development of skin cancer. UVC is very strong, and our ozone layer currently blocks this. And remember that SPF is a relative measure of how long a sunscreen should protect you from the sun. Not everyone will get the same protection from the same sunscreen. This amount of protection varies, and is based on your skin type and how quickly you burn. For example, let’s say your skin turns red in two minutes while you are unprotected and out in the sun. This means an SPF of 30 should protect you 30 times longer than two minutes. Therefore, 2 x 30 = 60 minutes, or one hour of protection. In the same scenario, a person who is unprotected and turns red in 10 minutes while unprotected and out in the sun, would obtain 300 minutes, or five hours of protection from the same 30 SPF sunscreen. While you’re enjoying your most favorite summer beverage, don’t forget to eat your fruits and veggies! Believe it or not, a diet high in fruits and veggies will also help with burn prevention, as it provides your skin with lots of antioxidants to fight off those harmful rays. If you get a sunburn, cut open an aloe vera leaf and remove the sticky gel inside for topical use. Carry sun protection with you so you will always be prepared. Have sunscreen in your purse or book bag or keep a hat in your car. Sunscreen is active on your skin for about 80 to 90 minutes and then its efficacy goes down dramatically. Look for an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply sunscreen before putting on clothing to avoid any “missing spots” around sleeves, straps, or flip flops. If you get a sunburn, stay in a cool room and drink plenty of water to rehydrate from the inside out. Cooling aloe gel can make the areas feel better. Aspirin or ibuprofen will help with inflammation and pain. Never pick or pull at peeling skin or blisters. — Kate Gant, MD West Oak Dermatology westoakdermatology.com
The main reason sun protection is so important is for skin cancer prevention, but also to prevent sunburns and delay/reduce signs of skin aging. Some tips to protect your skin from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays and reduce your risk of skin cancer and sunburn: • Seek shade when the sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. • Wear protective clothing as much as possible such as lightweight long-sleeved shirts, pants, widebrimmed hats, and sunglasses. This is especially important in babies and children. • Use a broad spectrum (provides protection from both UVA and UVB), water resistant sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. SPF number indicates how well the sunscreen protects you from the sun, and less than SPF 30 does not provide adequate protection. Water resistance does not mean waterproof or sweatproof. Most adults need about an ounce of sunscreen to cover their entire body (about the size of a shot glass). Spray sunscreens should still be rubbed in and spread out evenly. • Sunscreen needs to be used whenever you are going to be outdoors, even on rainy/cloudy days. • When outside, all sunscreens need to be re-applied every two hours (no matter the number of SPF) or immediately after sweating or swimming. • Use extra caution near sand or water as these surfaces reflect the damaging sun rays and increase the chance of sunburn. • “Who’s got your back?” Try and enlist a buddy to help you apply sunscreen on hard-to-reach areas so you do not miss any parts of your skin. If you get a sunburn, begin treating it as soon as you notice it. First, get out of the sun. Once indoors: • Take frequent cool baths or showers to help relieve the pain. • Then, apply a moisturizer (in an ointment that contains aloe vera or soy to help soothe the skin. Use plain petroleum jelly if you have sensitive skin). • If you are very uncomfortable from the sunburn, you can apply an over-the-counter hydrocortisone ointment. Avoid using products with “-caine” (such as lidocaine), as these may irritate the skin or cause an allergic reaction. • May take aspirin or ibuprofen to help reduce any swelling, redness, and discomfort. • Drink extra water to help prevent dehydration. If your skin blisters, it means you have second-degree burns. Allow the blisters to heal and do not pop them, as intact blisters help prevent infection on your skin and also help your skin heal. Take extra care to protect sunburned skin while it heals by wearing sun protective clothing or clothing with tightly woven fabrics. olsom residents Heather and Matt Kocina met with Kent Eberle, MCR, CKBR, UDCP, CAPS, president of Eberle Remodeling (eberleremodeling.com) in March 2019 to discuss renovations on their two-story home. “Kent wanted to get an idea of what we were looking for, and we wanted to get any suggestions he had for us,” Heather says. With an estimated (and accurate) timeline of about four to five months, the entire first floor renovation included gutting the couple’s closed-off, dark kitchen and transforming it into an open-concept space with a large island for entertaining and top-of-the-line appliances—including three ovens! Following the initial consultation, Eberle presented a general timeline for the design and product selection, a detailed proposal for construction and an overview of the construction phases. Once the agreement was signed, the Kocinas received a detailed schedule. Heather’s cousin helped Matt with the demolition during the first week of July 2019. Eberle Remodeling started construction the following week, and the whole remodel was completed just before Thanksgiving, allowing the Kocinas to host a family celebration with nearly 60 guests.

KITCHEN ESSENTIALS The Kocinas wanted as much of an open concept as possible with the largest island that could fit in the space. They felt it was worth investing in topof-the-line appliances, all of which are by Wolf. Eberle was tasked with creating a larger island to increase functionality and to build a space that felt more welcoming. The team removed the existing peninsula and small island, both of which limited accessibility to the kitchen. They re-configured the kitchen with a new layout, narrowed the depth of the existing pantry, and added a double oven underneath the existing stair landing.
LIVING WITHOUT A KITCHEN During the construction, the Kocinas moved to the second floor of their house, which allowed the contractors to have the space and time to work. “We could not use our kitchen for four months. We made it work, because we knew there was a bright light at the end of the remodeling tunnel,” Heather says. “Make sure you have a great support system to help you out. Since we did not have a kitchen or laundry room during this time, my mom cooked us dinner every night and helped out with our laundry.”
THE BIG REVEAL GETTING STARTED The Kocinas had weekly and monthly construction plans from Eberle, which helped with their budgeting as well as provided an overview of the construction phases. Taking the couple’s wish list into account, Eberle planned the layout and function of the remodel. The couple hired Lindsay Tate of Lindsay Tate Designs (@lindsaytatedesigns) to pick out all the finishes. “We hired Lindsay about a month into the process, and had to change some of the original choices my husband and I selected, because we had no clue what we were doing,” Heather says. “We watched HGTV and browsed several magazines and websites to find the style

Overjoyed by the results of the complete kitchen renovation, Heather cried happy tears upon seeing their dream kitchen. She loves the big island with a Mont Blanc quartzite countertop, which seats eight to 10 people comfortably. Kings Custom Cabinetry (kingscustomcabinetry.com) designed the custom cabinets, which feature shaker style doors, hidden light rails, dovetailed drawers, rollout drawers, and soft close drawers and doors. “I feel like a professional chef with all the high-end appliances and gadgets around me,” she says. For Eberle, the balance between the aesthetic of the kitchen as well as the functionality of the space made this kitchen renovation stand out.

If you plan to be in your home for decades, you will be investing in quality that will last a lifetime. 5 // Be realistic about costs. Eberle says if it’s too cheap, there’s a reason why and you’ll likely learn very quickly what the reason is. 6 // Don’t work with someone who’s vague. The costs will increase if the details aren’t done in advance, Eberle warns. The more people involved in the process, the more convoluted the process is likely to be. 7 // Trust your gut. If you don’t trust the person you’re working with, or they don’t respond in a timely fashion, move on quickly or it can easily go downhill from there.

HOW TO DONATE: ReCreate Director Donna Sangwin says you can email info@ recreate.org to let them know you have items you’d like to donate. “We are hoping to accept curbside donations soon with proper social distancing as mandated.” WHAT TO DONATE: Sangwin says they really appreciate when like items are bundled together. “Boxes of random items all tossed in are very difficult to sort,” she says. Snowline Hospice operates four thrift stores (three in El Dorado County and one in Sacramento County) as well as a Reuse & Processing (RAP) Center in Placerville. All proceeds from the stores help fund the clinical mission of Snowline. HOW TO DONATE: Visit Snowline Thrift on Facebook (facebook.com/snowlinethrift) for the latest information for donations. Daron Hairabedian, director of organizational development at Snowline, says each location has a donation drop-off or “alley” staffed with trained donation receivers. They will retrieve the donation from your vehicle. “Over time, we have learned about what sells and what doesn’t,” he says. “The donation receivers have to determine what we can and cannot take.”

Rather than leave these items in the trash, turn to the many local businesses and nonprofits that rely on your donations and contributions to operate. Read on to get the 411 on what to donate, what to consign, where to go, and how to find out when these businesses will be accepting donations once again.
WHAT TO DONATE: Snowline Thrift
stores accept clothing, linens, housewares, kitchenware, small kitchen appliances, jewelry, pictures/art, garden items, pet items, furniture, and media (including DVDs, records, and CDs). Each location also accepts a limited number of books per day. WHAT NOT TO DONATE: Magazines, VHS, LP-operated items, large household appliances, anything with excessive wear and tear, or furniture and other items that are broken or unsafe.

WEAVE (Women Escaping a Violent Environment) has three stores throughout Sacramento where you can shop to support the nonprofit. All proceeds at all locations help fund WEAVE programs and services that empower survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault to regain their independence. HOW TO DONATE: Visit their website for updates regarding donations and pickups. WEAVEWorks on Arden is the main hub for all donations, including pickups and dropoffs. WEAVEWorks and TRUE, a WEAVE boutique, request items to be off hangers and placed in a disposable bag or box. TRUE accepts up to three bags. When pickups resume, call 916-643-4606 to schedule your donation. “We are expecting more than our normal amount of donations, and for that we are grateful,” WEAVE CEO Beth Hassett says. “We do ask that our donors are patient with us at this time, as we may need to temporarily reduce our store hours and/or donation times as we get back up to speed.” WHAT TO DONATE: WEAVE accepts gently used clothing for men, women and kids in addition to, shoes and accessories (jewelry, scarves, purses, and belts). Small home items, such as lamps, decorative items, sheets, towels, pictures, and toys are also accepted. WEAVE also accepts furniture, but they ask donors to submit a picture to donate@weaveinc.org. WHAT NOT TO DONATE: Mattresses, electric blankets, any children’s items that are weight bearing, such as a pack and play, stroller, high chair, and car seat. WEAVE does not take electronics and computers. They also will not accept clothing with stains, holes, or items that are falling apart.
CONSIGNMENT
Consignment is a process where customers
bring their items to consignment stores to sell. Once those items are sold, they’ll receive a commission. Consigning clothing, accessories, jewelry, or furniture is an option to help you purge items that are no longer of use and then make money doing it.
ReLoveIt Consignments
Folsom, reloveit.us HOW IT WORKS: Customers can bring in
items anytime the store is open. Employees will review the items and decide if they can consign it. “Consignors receive 40% of the final selling price of items consigned,” ReLoveIt Owner Rachel Arendt explains. “If a consignor decides to use store credit, an additional 10% of the consignor’s balance will be added to the consignor’s credit.” Payments for items sold can either be mailed or picked up at the store. Items are kept on consignment for 90 days. At the end of this period, all items that have not sold are donated to WEAVE and tax donation receipts are available upon request. WHAT TO CONSIGN: Clothing must be of current style and in excellent condition. ReLoveIt accepts items seasonally, with the following schedule: January: light winter items (no tall boots or heavy coats); February: transition to spring items (no shorts or swimsuits); March-July: spring and summer items; August: transition to fall items (no tall boots or heavy coats); September-December: fall and winter items. WHAT NOT TO CONSIGN: ReLoveIt will not accept clothing with stains, holes, missing buttons, broken zippers, or odor. They do not accept items from Walmart, Target, Old Navy, or Kmart and are selective on items from stores such as Forever 21, Charlotte Russe, and H&M.

Home Consignment Center Store Manager Leisa Rigby says new items arrive daily from model homes, manufacturers, factory closeouts, and the areaʼs finest homes. To consign with HCC, no appointments are required. Bring your items to either location, or email/text a photo to Home Consignment Center (contact information is listed at thehomeconsignmentcenter.com).
SAVE OR SELL? ReLoveIt Owner Rachel Arendt shares four questions to ask yourself as you clean out your closet. 1 How long has it been since you wore it? “Clothes have no value to you if they sit in the closet untouched for long periods of time,” she says. 2 How does the item make you feel? “If you don’t feel great wearing an item, it’s time to let it go,” she says. 3 Does the item fit well? “Holding onto a handful of items that don’t fit but you absolutely love is not a big deal. However, if you have many items that don’t fit, it’s probably time to get them out of the closet and make space for things that do fit,” she says. 4 Would you wear the item today? “My personal rule: If I notice an item in my closet that I haven’t worn for a while and is appropriate for the day, I tell myself that if I don’t wear it today, I can’t keep it, because I will most likely never choose to wear it,” she says.
DECLUTTERING DOCUMENTS As you clean out your office, desk, and filing cabinets, be sure to hold onto important documents, including the last seven years of tax records, RedDog Shredz Owner Kim Rorh says. You can get rid of past bank statements and old checks, and the safest way to destroy important, personal documents is to shred them. RedDog Shredz accepts all paper to shred. If you aren’t sure how to discard any paper documents, Rorh share five words of advice: “When in doubt, shred it.”

WHAT TO CONSIGN: HCC sells furniture, artwork, home décor, and jewelry. The jewelry department sells high-quality contemporary and vintage jewelry of all kinds, including platinum, gold, diamonds, precious stones, watches, and more. Whatever you wish to consign should be in a salable condition. WHAT NOT TO CONSIGN: Rigby says there are some items HCC can’t consign, such as used mattresses, bedding, and pillows. HCC doesn’t accept stained, torn, or damaged items. Furniture items with pet odors and scratch marks will be refused. They may also decline items based on inventory levels. JUNE 2020 |

very time an accomplished chef decides to open an establishment of their own in our community, I am thankful. This is no easy market to compete in, given the abundance of large corporate restaurants, limited space, and rising rents. So when Chef Q decided to bring his considerable pedigree and unique genre of California comfort food to Roseville under the moniker Q1227 (December 27 is his birthday), I was eager to sample his wares. I was greeted by the hostess, which on this evening happened to be Chef Q’s lovely wife, Tamara. I was seated strategically near the “pass” from which I could JUNE 2020 |

watch the chef and his staff prepare and finish plating dishes. Seeing the skillfully composed plates leave the pass made ordering more difficult, as I wanted to try everything—I’d love to see a tasting menu option added! I started with the Lobster Bites; deep-fried portions (large chunks really) of the tender homard, battered and bathed in the oil-spa until crispy and golden, then served with a spicy remoulade. There are a couple of foods that will spark heated debates in the lower-right geographic section of the country: Southern fried chicken and gumbo. Never one to steer away from a culinary controversy, I dove right into both. Chef Q pounds his chicken breasts out flat, gives them a dip in his seasoned buttermilk batter, and sends them off to the spa. The result is Southernfried chicken you eat with a fork served vertically and perched above mashed potatoes and gravy. Gumbo is a little like BBQ in that it differs from region to region and sometimes family to family. Q1227 makes a dark roux, and a thick stew-like broth, much like you would find in New Orleans.

Brimming with chicken, shrimp, and the “holy trinity” of bell peppers, onions, and celery, it’s what I’m looking for when I order gumbo. I could not resist temptation by ordering the Bourbon St. Bread Pudding for dessert, especially when I found out it was Chef Q’s mother’s recipe. Decadently dense slices of bread and custard topped with a bourbon cream sauce, berries, and whipped cream. Sometimes it’s better not to resist temptation in whatever form it comes. The restaurant is stylish but not pretentious, and the wine bar looked like a place I could see myself savoring a glass, or on the patio trying the smoked chicken lollipops with a cold beer. Stop in and sample some Southern charm right here in Roseville.

o, you think writing about restaurants and food sounds like fun, right? You think sitting down to another meal full of items like Lobster Bisque, BBQ Free-Range Chicken Pizza, Skuna Bay Salmon Salad, Black Forest Ham and Gruyere Sandwich, and Molasses Gingerbread Cake with Meyer Lemon Sauce is easy? Well, let me tell you something, it is WORK! You see, once you back away from the table and contemplate the items you have just tried, you have to put those thoughts into words that will enlighten the reader and make them want to share in the experience. Being a baseball junkie, I was looking at this exercise as “at bats,” and would score my choices as hits or outs; you know, have a

little fun with it. So here we go! First at bat: Lobster Bisque. Lots going on here: the base was creamy and flavorful, plentiful chunks of tasty, tender lobster, and just the right garnish. HIT. Second at bat: Skuna Bay Salmon Salad. Salmon is an easy fish to overcook, and when I first laid eyes on this salad, I worried this might be the case. I have found that when the exterior of the salmon looks this good and well-seasoned, I’m going to find the inside a little dry and overdone. Not this salmon though. It was cooked perfectly and seasoned as though they read my mind—served on top of a very fresh salad, with a beautiful avocado rose, sprinkled with feta and finished with a honey-lime-basil vinaigrette. HIT. Third at bat: Black Forest Ham and Gruyère Sandwich. Look, I love ham and cheese, and Heyday’s version hit it out of the park (sorry, I couldn’t resist, but it’s true!). The ham was perfect, the Gruyère added a little sophistication, and the aioli, caramelized onions, and brioche bun nailed it. I upgraded the side to their Butternut Squash Salad—this combination was most definitely a HIT.

Fourth at bat: BBQ Free-Range Chicken Pizza. I'm from New Jersey and love pizza, but pizzerias in Jersey don't put chicken, barbecue sauce, pickled red onions, applewood smoked bacon, cilantro, and pineapple on a pizza. In my day, this would have been blasphemy. My first bite with no pineapple was good...really good. I knew the pineapple would turn me off, but my wife said I had to try it, so I did. Here is what I can tell you: if pressed by my friends at the Jersey Shore, I will plead the fifth! I didn’t want to like it, but I can’t dream of ordering this pizza without it now. HIT Extra innings: Molasses Gingerbread Cake with Meyer Lemon Sauce. So, after going four for four, was this café about to swing and miss? Was this tasty looking dessert just a pretty face or was this going to be a perfect night at the plate (get it, plate!)? Well, the iced cake was delicious with a delicate and tasty spice, and the lemon sauce was the perfect complement. HIT. What a treat to find a café with an interesting and creative menu prepared by a team that has perfected their offerings to be a series of hits. Ramen 101 // Think back to the ramen you ate while in college. Now erase that memory from your brain, because what you’ll eat at Ramen101 in Rocklin is nowhere near what you’ve had in the past. It’s more like gourmet ramen. If that’s a thing. My husband and I split a few dishes and all of them were outstanding. We went with the Chicken Ramen featuring grilled chicken, boiled egg, bamboo shoots, kikurage mushrooms, green onions, sprouts, and corn. Other ramen dishes include Tonkotsu Ramen, Miso Ramen, Shoyu Ramen, and Black Garlic Ramen, which all have pork as their protein. Seafood and vegetabled-based ramens are also on the menu. But it doesn’t end there! We had a Chicken and Rice Bowl that was delicious as well—and generously portioned. If you’re a fan of Crab Rangoons, order them here! They’re perfect. They don’t skimp on filling and they had terrific flavor. I’m assuming the rest of their menu is just as delicious. Their starters consist of pot stickers, tempura, lumpia, edamame, chicken karaage (chicken nuggets) and squid. I’d never been to a “healthy café” before and was curious as to what I would find. The café was warm and inviting as soon as I walked in the door with a clean and peaceful atmosphere, as well as some cute photo op areas! As for the menu, there’s plenty to choose from and something for everyone, including kids. I’m a fan of chocolate, so I went with the Brownie Batter Shake. Great texture, delicious flavor, and so good that my 10-year-old stole it from me—even though she was enjoying her own shake. She chose the Cookies N’ Cream Shake from the kids’ menu. So yummy! If you’re wondering where “healthy” comes into play, each shake has 24 grams of protein, 21 essential vitamins and minerals, fewer than 250 calories, and less than nine grams of sugar...in a shake! The menu includes options for chocolate lovers, like Thin Mint and Snickers, or if you’re feelin’ fruity, go for the Blueberry Muffin or Fruity Pebbles shakes. Tijuana Taqueria // Mexican food is my go-to for takeout, but it has to be traditional and authentic. For some of the best, head to Tijuana Taqueria in Placerville for delicious tacos, tortas, carnitas, enchiladas, and burritos—all accompanied by house-made chips and salsa. I tried the Grande Taco, which certainly lived up to its name; it's large...large enough for two. Stuffed full of spicy shredded chicken, along with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and spicy (you can order it less spicy) salsa, it was bursting with flavor. The flour tortilla was lightly and perfectly fried and crispy. Don't miss trying their Chicken Soft Tacos either. Soft, house-made corn tortillas perfectly encase big chunks of nicely cooked and flavorful white meat chicken, beans, onions, and peppers—street tacos as they are meant to be! I love wine. It’s no secret that I look forward to my daily 5 o'clock (OK, 5:30 if any of our employees are reading this) “generous pour.” But when I’m feeling indulgent (perhaps like “Yay, it’s Tuesday— let’s celebrate!“), my go-to bubbly is Helwig Winery's Rosé Sparkling Wine. Wine I’m no sommelier, so I cannot spout fancy wine terminology, but I like what I like, and I love this sparkling wine. I love the bubbles, I love the taste. Hold on, the grapes for the Silt Wine Company Pinot Noir are grown in Clarksburg, just 15 miles from Sacramento, not in Napa, Russian River, or Mendocino? While the capitol is buried in political gamesmanship, there is no gamesmanship going on here...this is one fabulous Pinot. Anything from Casino Mine Ranch! Mackenzie Cecchi is the fabulous woman who runs the place (she and her husband also run the Sacramento restaurant Canon). In my opinion, there isn’t a dud in their portfolio of wines, and I am a picky gal. The Rosé, which is a blend of Mourvèdre and Grenache, is crisp and delightful, and the Vermentino is amazing with a refreshing hint of lemon. Their Grenache Blanc has a minerality that I love, and their reds are all fabulous—most notably for me, their Simone blend of Grenache Noir and Mourvèdre and the Marcel, which is Tempranillo with Teroldego. Karmère Vineyards and Winery is my favorite local winery, and I’ve been a wine club member for years. It’s family-owned, the staff is always welcoming and most of all, the wines are wonderful! I have many favorites, but I always come home with a jug of The Temperance Tart’s Naughty Bawdy. (Yes, I said “jug.”) It’s a red blend that pairs with just about anything, including wine-tasting picnics, weekend getaways with the girls, or just sitting at home waiting for the stay-at-home restrictions to be lifted. Equally delightful is the origin of its name. As the jug label says, “Karmère’s land was previously owned for over 195 years by the original Shenandoah Valley settlers the Jamesons, whose heritage was steeped in the temperance movement. Mr. Jameson swore vines would never darken his land.” Thank goodness the Hoopes family did not share his sobering attitude!
