I
t wasn’t until day one in the San Diego State dorms that I realized lots of people place extreme value, and spend excessive money, on big-name brands. Growing up in small-town Auburn—where the only clothing stores (at the time) consisted of Kmart and Gottchalks—labels like Burberry, Coach, and Fendi were completely foreign to me. I was more accustomed to clearance racks, and picking clothes based on how they made me feel as opposed to where they were from. These days, though I’m familiar with bougier brands, I still prefer bargain hunting at thrift shops and being comfortable over classy. But that’s the beauty of fashion, right? It’s a way to express your unique personality in the form of colors, materials, and patterns. Plus, purchasing a power outfit—whether it costs pennies or your entire paycheck—really does have the potential to shift your mood and mindset. In this month’s Get to Know article, “Dressed to Impress,” we introduce you to four local stylists who have turned their passion for fashion into successful careers. Read their closet must-haves, predictions for the future of fashion, and best style tips starting on page 16. It may just be the inspiration you need to trade in those stretchy pandemic pants for a few new proper-fitting ’fits. Just remember: If you’re looking to upgrade your attire, #ShopSmall. Our region is overflowing with mom-and-pop boutiques brimming with on-trend ensembles. For 10 products made locally with love, turn to page 48. From a hand-painted kids’ T-shirt to a luscious leather backpack, beaded earrings, and beyond, there’s a lovingly crafted item for all. And when it comes to accessorizing, what’s cuter than a furry friend? Check out this year’s pictorial of local pets and some entertaining anecdotes about each of them on page 61. We also divulge the year’s most popular pet trends on page 32, ensuring you’ll have the coolest canine on the block; and introduce you to a handful of area animal organizations whose humane, heartfelt efforts help all types of cuddly creatures on page 22. Finally, in honor of America’s birthday on July 4, we share “Make it some pretty—and pretty refreshing—drinks in “Red, White, simple but & Booze” (page 84)—plus a list of star-spangled celebrations to make this year’s Independence Day extra exciting. After significant.” a year of isolation and canceled events, I’m all for letting —Don Draper freedom ring. Just don’t forget to don your coolest allAmerican attire…stars and stripes are always in style, after all. Cheers! —Megan megan@stylemg.com @meggoeggowaffle

All three of the local ninjas from THE STUDIO Martial Arts & Fitness (trainatthestudio.com) who competed on Season 13 of American Ninja Warrior—Francisco Barajas, Brian Montagnese, and José Gomez Jr.— advanced to the semi-finals. Award-winning Wise Villa Winery (wisevillawinery.com), which also holds the title of being a certified California Sustainable Winery and Vineyard, is opening a new ecofriendly winery this fall. Twice the size of their existing facility, the new space will use 60% less cooling-related energy, a feat that’ll be accomplished by building the winery into a mountain so three sides have earthen walls, which will radiate cool air into the winery year-round while using no electricity. Learn more about Wise Villa’s healthy, flourishing, and fully sustainable farming operation at wisevillawinery. com/sustainability.
Oak Ridge High School graduate Patrick Sammon, who’s heading to Arizona State University this fall to swim for Bob Bowman (Michael Phelps’ former coach), qualified for Wave II at the 2021 U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials in the 100- and 200meter freestyle events last month. In addition to Sammon, three more local swimmers also qualified for Wave II: Colby Mefford, Ben Dillard, and Matt Klotz. Haley Anderson and Bryce Mefford from Granite Bay and El Dorado Hills, respectively, will both be competing on the U.S. Olympic swimming team in Tokyo this month.
Congrats to Lara Gularte who will serve as El Dorado County’s Poet Laureate for 2021-2023. Over the course of her two-year term, Gularte will follow the Laureate Trail (a series of free poetry readings held at each of the El Dorado County Public Libraries), compose occasional poems to commemorate special public events, and participate as a judge for Poetry Out Loud. Attention budding artists! Blue Line Arts is seeking original and thoughtprovoking designs to be featured on their merchandise. Selected artists will receive $200 for each design used, along with an Artist Membership and promotional feature on the Blue Line Arts social media channels. The deadline to enter is July 31. Each student will receive $1,000 to put toward their education and future endeavors. Dressed to Impress 4 FA S H I O N E X P E R T S by TARA MENDANHA
One thing that never goes out of style is selfexpression and these fashion experts are brimming with it. Read on for their favorite designers, top style tips, and closet must-haves.
Tell us about yourself and your foray into the world of fashion. I went to a British convent in the Himalayan foothills where I had a posh school uniform. A few times a year, however, I got to wear colored clothes, which launched my love for fashion. After moving to the U.S., I landed my first job as an image consultant at a high-end boutique and have been a stylist for 27 years. I’m not into trends but timeless pieces. I’m also not into quantity but quality and cost per wear. Since 2020, I’ve used Instagram for inspiration with a focus on positive aging. I’m 54, and in our youth-obsessed culture, women my age are practically invisible online and have been historically put out to pasture. We need to look at aging as an honor—what a privilege it is to have all this wisdom by just being here. Describe your style. I get dressed based on how I'm feeling that day—whether it’s hyper feminine with heels and lots of delicate jewelry or more masculine with an oversized silhouette, brogues, and a hat. Where do you draw inspiration from? Magazines, social media, the streets, film, music, art, galleries and museums, and travel—either physically or creatively through books and movies. What’s the future of fashion? It will be all about mixing pieces in your closet. Wear whatever makes you feel good and own it. People have been overdressing as of late, even to go to the grocery store. And I say, why not? The pandemic has affected the way designers are looking at style. There’s still fantasy and aspiration, but I think we’ll see more practicality; lots of knits; pared down, matching separates that feel like the new suits; and oversized pieces. Must-have closet item: A trench coat. Favorite designer: Currently, I’m loving

everything Ganni. Fashion icon: I love how Jenna Lyons, Diane Keaton, and Lauren Hutton put things together. Also, the originals: Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Jackie O. Last stylish purchase: A Saint Laurent chunky chain-link necklace. Best style tip: Embrace your shape. Once you know which silhouettes flatter you, filter trends ruthlessly. Favorite local shop: I’m biased and will have to say Anthropologie!

Q&A
get to know
Tell us about yourself and your foray into the world of fashion. My passion is personal styling, which doesn’t feel like a job because it's fun! I started JF Personal Styling when I was a full-time student at American River College while working at Taco Bell. I started styling [after being inspired by] Alpha M., a respected fashion YouTuber who styles men. This led me to styling my friends and family the first year. [In college, I modeled] at a large photo shoot with many local models and photographers; after, I started styling local models and collaborating with realtors and brokers. My goal is to continue working with more fashion brands and do commercial work. Describe your style. A mix of casual and business casual. Most days you’ll find me in a black dress polo from Banana Republic, Levi jeans, and a pair of Adidas Ultraboosts. Where do you draw inspiration from? Instagram, professional stylists, and magazines like Vogue. What’s the future of fashion? It will come down to "less is more.” Everyone is wearing shorter, tighter fitting clothes now. Not just in size but also style of clothing. More people are favoring minimal designs with monotone colors. The majority of realtors I work with are looking for business casual outfits rather than full suits.
Q&A
Must-have closet item: Banana Republic’s dress polo makes me feel confident and is reasonably priced. Favorite designer: John Elliot. His pieces are timeless and he designs clothes I can see myself in: simple and clean. Fashion icon: Michael B. Jordan. Last stylish purchase: Adidas Ultraboost DNA Python shoes. It's a great athletic fashion sneaker that you can wear with jeans or shorts. Best style tip: For women, get comfortable and affordable slim jeans from Banana Republic Factory. For men, dry your clothes that are just a tad bit larger than you’d like at high heat. Favorite local shop: For myself, Banana Republic Factory; for clients, Nordstrom Rack.

get to know however, and when Hollywood shut down during the pandemic it allowed me to reevaluate what I wanted out of my career. I moved back to Cameron Park and started my own styling firm to help everyday people feel as confident in their wardrobe as my celeb clients did on red carpets. I also work with local fashion brands and share daily content on Instagram and Tik Tok. Post-pandemic, I’m excited to open a styling studio. Describe your style. My daily style is casual with hints of dramatic flair. When it’s time to dress up, it becomes high-fashion editorial and dramatic. That said, I always dress according to my mood to express myself.
What’s the future of fashion? With more people working from home there will be an overall shift to casual pieces. But Zoom meetings mean nicer but more comfortable looks so tops will be at the forefront of fashion. Small boutique clothing stores will need to focus more time and energy toward having strong e-commerce sites and social media. Department stores will need to find other services to offer.
Q&A
Must-have closet item: A black leather
jacket. Favorite designer: Christian Siriano for his all-around inclusivity and Christopher John Rogers for his bright colors, patterns, and gorgeous structured silhouettes. Fashion icon: I don’t have one. I like to follow my own sense of style and interpret art and design to create my own vision. Last stylish purchase: A beautiful floral lavender dress by Christopher John Rogers. Best style tip: Always accessorize! Jewelry, shoes, and handbags can take an outfit from basic to high fashion. However, be careful not to over-accessorize. Favorite local shop: Freestyle Clothing Exchange.

Jennifer Sattler, El Dorado Hills, Personal Stylist and Fashion Blogger at Closet Choreography, @closetchoreography Tell us about yourself and your foray into the world of fashion. All I need for a good day is strong coffee to start, a cute outfit, and a whole lot of Jesus! There’s no doubt about it—I was born to shop. Growing up in Placerville, and after graduating with my degree in fashion merchandising, it was a natural choice to start my career as the personal stylist manager for the Nordstrom in Roseville when it opened in 2000. After 20 years at Nordstrom, Covid closed Nordstrom Sacramento’s doors forever. I was devasted but not done. I launched Closet Choreography (closetchoreography. com) in September of 2020 to show women how to think like a stylist, know what to buy, and how to put it all together effortlessly. As an independent personal stylist, I work one-on-one with clients locally and virtually, offering everything from a full closet detox, to shopping and digital lookbooks. I also post my #hautemama look of the day on Instagram alongside my stylist tips and tricks.
Describe your style. Approachable fashion and ageless style from Target to Chanel. Where do you draw inspiration from? The feeling I get when I help someone put a look together that they feel good in and wouldn’t have thought of on their own. What’s the future of fashion? Now is the time to reinvent shopping. Consider all your resources. For example, vintage boutiques are brimming with inventory and inspiration. Plus, you’ll feel great supporting local business! Affiliate programs like LIKEtoKNOW.it make it easy to shop a curated online collection, from multiple retailers, all on your favorite influencer’s blog.
Q&A
Must-have closet item: Nude heels. It’s the best item to instantly pull an outfit together and help you stand taller. Favorite designer: Chanel. Fashion icon: Iris Apfel. Last stylish purchase: A kitschy Gucci cardigan. Best style tip: #getdressed. Favorite local shop: Panache in Sacramento.
Jennifer Sattler left photo by Kelli Seeley Photography, right photo by Tori Wible Photography.
Where do you draw inspiration from? My surroundings, art, architecture, movies, films, and plays. With my clients, I try to get to know their lifestyle and personality so that their clothes match who they are.

Best in Show 7 POPULAR PET TRENDS by KOURTNEY JASON
Whether the pandemic meant you adopted new fur babies or started spending extra time with the ones you already own, you’ve likely been spoiling your pets more than ever. From toys to eats to their health, here’s what’s new and trending in the world of man’s best friend.
Pawsitively Busy Veterinarians One of the biggest trends is how overwhelmed all veterinarian hospitals have been since the beginning of the pandemic. “We work harder, longer hours. We have difficulty finding adequate staff. More families have adopted pets, so there are more animals to treat, and more people want to do even more for their companions,” says Jennifer Sweet, DVM, at Blue Ravine Animal Hospital (blueravineanimalhospital.com). Dr. Sweet wants to remind pet parents to plan ahead, don’t expect to be seen quickly for minor issues, and be aware that wait times will be hours in some cases. “Above all, be kind to those caring for your pet. We are doing our best for you and are working as fast as we can to help.”
2
Cool Dogs Deserve Cool Toys Jennifer Kirk, founder & CEO of Posh Puppy Boutique (poshpuppyboutique.com) and Posh Paws Grooming Salon (poshpawsgroomingsalon.com), says pet owners are loving toy sets for their pups. “Instead of a single toy, your pet gets up to five toys in a boxed set that runs $62-$81 and features fun themes like brunch, burgers, and camping.”
3
Sweet Celebrations Melisse LeWeck, manager at The Doggie Bag (thedoggiebag.com), has noticed an increase in birthday celebrations for dogs. “People’s pets have become important family members— plus, everyone loves a party! We sell ‘pupcakes’ and birthday cakes that are dog-friendly and enormously popular.”

| health & wellness | Farm-to-Bowl Food The team at Bark Avenue (barkavenueca. com) has noticed natural foods becoming more popular for pets, including brands like My Perfect Pet, Smallbatch, and Open Farm. “Pet parents are taking a step back from highly processed foods and embracing whole, fresh ingredients either as full diets or as a healthy addition to their pet's current food,” shares Holly McLaughlin, store manager at Bark Avenue’s El Dorado Hills location. “This is beneficial for any pet and adds variety and nutrition to their diets; it’s also a great option for picky eaters as well as pets who have difficulty digesting dry kibble.”

What the Gut? Another trend within the pet food nutrition area is the growing use of natural forms of probiotics, according to Bob Campbell, owner of sBarkles (sbarkles.com). “While there [are] some fine over-the-counter probiotics, including Dr. Mercola’s Pet Probiotics, the use of goat’s milk, for example, is rising quickly,” he says. “The advantages of goat’s milk versus cow’s milk are many. It’s much easier to digest and is a great source of both prebiotics and probiotics, which provides optimum gut health. Check out the offerings from Primal Pet Foods, Answers Pet Food, and The Honest Kitchen.” While not every dog may tolerate the addition of goat’s milk to their diet, it’s certainly something to consider.

Kelley Jensen, owner of Bark to Barn Pet & Farm Sitting (barktobarn.com), says the region is home to a large population of Northern Pacific rattlesnakes, and there are several snakeremoval companies that offer rattlesnake diversion training for dogs at an affordable cost. “While rattlesnakes try to avoid us as much as we try to avoid them, there are times we come into contact with them, and oftentimes, we meet them because our dog has discovered this interesting-looking thing and can’t wait to give it a good sniff. That’s when trouble strikes—quite literally. We encourage you to consider training as part of your dog’s overall wellness plan.”
7
Camping with Canines Bringing dogs camping has become an increasingly popular activity, says Niki Wolley, DVM, and staff veterinarian at VCA Loomis Basin Veterinary Clinic. "There are so many fun things to do with your furry companion while camping, such as hiking and swimming. We encourage you to bring a pet first aid kit (scissors, gauze, antiseptic wipes, gloves, and vet wrap/ bandage), a life jacket if you’re going somewhere to swim, and plenty of fresh water with a collapsible bowl. Also, be sure to look up the nearest 24/7 emergency veterinary clinic near your campground, just in case,” Dr. Wolley says.

Crooked Lakes Trail to Penner Lake by RYAN MARTINEZ
PRINC I P LE S OF L E AV E NO T R AC E According to the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, these are the core principles when recreating outdoors.
FUEL UP:
Driven by minimal environmental impact and sourcing local, seasonal produce, the weekly menu at Three Forks Bakery & Brewing Co. (threeforksnc. com) is full of delicious, organic choices (including tantalizing woodfired pizzas and award-winning beers). The pickled veggies can't be missed!
1 Plan ahead and prepare.
2 Travel and camp on durable surfaces.
3 Dispose of waste properly.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Prepare for a
bumpy road to the trailhead and arrive early to secure a parking spot; expect to share the trail.
4 Leave what you find.
5
WHY WE LOVE IT:
Minimize campfire impacts (and follow local regulations).
Abundant wildlife, amazing views, and a variety of lakes are all packed into this relatively easy trail. Having the option to cool off with a quick dip makes it a solid summer option.

6 Respect wildlife.

TRAIL NOTES:
Be considerate of others.
With high summer temps and plenty of sun exposure, remember to bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Wear shoes with traction and, as always, practice Leave No Trace principles.

eniors may struggle with their unique health conditions during their Golden years so they need Golden care!
The modern approach to health care with the over reliance on pharmaceuticals sidestep the benefits of traditional modalities of nutrition, botanicals, Homeopathy, Yoga and more. The Doctrine of Naturopathic Medicine especially applies to seniors: First do no harm. Apply the healing power of nature. Identify and treat the cause. Doctor as a Teacher. Treat the whole person. Bodies can heal by less dependence on drugs and the impact of their side effects. Interestingly, these same principles can be applied to the care of our pets. As a Veterinarian and a Naturopathic Doctor, I utilize the holistic and naturopathic principles in treating both people and pets. “Our Universe is not enclosed in the four walls of Penicillin”.

Photo ROSSandHELEN photoqraphers.
A: A food co-op (cooperative) is a grocery store owned by members of the community. Unlike corporate chains, food co-ops are totally independent and owned by the community members who shop there. Instead of focusing on investors, food co-ops focus on their community—nourishing everyone according to their specific needs and lifestyle. They’re also the perfect place to find high-quality local food, since co-ops know their local farmers and family business owners by name. What’s more, they’re passionate about giving back to their communities. In fact, it’s the seventh principle that governs coops: concern for the community. They believe that good food is just the beginning of what people can achieve by working together. Member-owners pay a membership fee (prices vary based on the coop), which gives owners various discounts, access to special orders, and voting rights to help guide the direction of the co-op. Members can also receive dividends as owners of the co-op, which occurs when co-ops are profitable over a period of time.

Suburban gardening is a passion of mine,” Kwek says. “It supports local and regional food systems and land stewardship with a focus on healthy soil and regeneration.

o grass grows at Michelle Kwek’s house. Instead, the Folsom homeowner has turned her residential lot into a mini farm. Prettily arranged plantings of vegetables, fruit trees, funky little kiwis, berries, herbs, a rogue patch of dandelions for soil enrichment—plus fresh eggs from a couple of chickens—allow her to harvest groceries at her back door. She doesn’t keep bees, but she trades eggs for honey from a neighbor who does, and she fills a shallow basin with water and marbles for the bees who stop by.

control or code enforcement officer for exact requirements, but here are a few guidelines:
Judging by the statistics, more and more homeowners are wondering that, too. If you’re considering backyard homesteading, here is some food for thought:
If you plan to sell your farm products, you generally must get a business license and apply for a permit—even if you’re setting up at a farmers’ market or a stand in front of your house. Kwek doesn’t sell her produce, but she does offer some for free at a sidewalk stand.
KNOW THE LAWS
With the growing popularity of urban farming, cities and counties are relaxing their standards for raising animals on small lots, but you should know your local ordinances before you begin. Be aware that your homeowner association may impose further restrictions. Roosters, geese, turkeys, peacocks, and, of course, livestock, cannot be kept on most residential property. Why do we have all this green grass," Marini poses, "when we can be growing zucchini, tomatoes, and basil?
Kwek, who pulled her grass more than a decade ago, is at the forefront of a back-tothe-land trend: homesteading small urban spaces. Millions of people are growing a surprising amount of food in their modestsize yards. In fact, 16 million new families took up gardening in the U.S. last year, according to Garden Media Group. Locally, Folsom Code Enforcement Supervisor Pete Piccardo is seeing an uptick in the number of residents who keep chickens, and students at the Folsom school Kwek’s daughters attend planted and tend a garden. Kevin Marini, Master Gardener program manager for Placer and Nevada Counties, has "absolutely seen an enormous increase in food gardening...an amazing demand for seeds... and a huge increase in backyard chickens." Not only chickens but bees, rabbits, ducks, and quails. "Why do we have all this green grass," Marini poses, "when we can be growing zucchini, tomatoes, and basil?"

“Charlie is a one-yearold French bulldog. His special trick is that he can jump high with all four legs off the ground. I call him ‘frog man.’ His favorite food is an empty peanut butter jar, so he can try to get the last lick out. Some nights he turns into a zombie dog; his eyes get wide, he looks at you sideways, then lunges and barks like he’s going to eat you— all for fun! He’s very happy, smart, sensitive, and curious.”—Andrea Lynn Attana
“Chewy Bear (white) loves chasing anything you throw, but he has an unexplainable fear of our vacuum. Ted (black and white) loves to watch Chewy run and savor his treats.”—Alex Kestler
“Karly doesn’t have a mean bone in her body (unless you’re holding a hypodermic needle). I found her new kitten friend, Pandy, meowing all alone outside my office in an El Dorado Hills business park. They’re best buddies now!”—Jim Nystrom

Top Dogs MOST POPULAR BREEDS Every dog might have its day, but the breeds below are the most popular in the U.S., according to the American Kennel Club.
1
Labrador Retriever
“Hoppy Barney isn’t always the sweetest, but he is the softest! He loves fresh veggies from the garden and hopping around the backyard.”—Deanna Spittles
•The Labrador retriever has been the most popular dog breed for the last 30 years. •Despite the name, this breed comes from Newfoundland. It’s unclear how the name “Labrador” came into play. •Labs are originally duck retrievers with a coat built to withstand the harshest conditions. •The Lab’s thick tail, often called an “otter tail,” serves as a powerful rudder, constantly moving back and forth, and aides the dog in turning while in the water.
2
Pet photos courtesy of thie respective owners.
French Bulldog
“Berkeley—our three-year-old French bulldog—is the biggest, bossiest ham! He loves to be close to us all the time and talks in snorts and head nods. When he wants to go outside, he leans his head back toward the door and gives us a look like ‘up now!’ He also lays in any sunny spot in the house—even if it’s only an inch or two—and loves blueberries.”—Kelly Bush
•Despite the French bulldog being bred as companion dogs, they’re surprisingly good watchdogs. •The French bulldog’s reputation as a favorite breed among city dwellers originates in France. The breed became associated with Paris café life and the women who frequented the Parisian dancehalls. •Artists such as Edgar Degas and ToulouseLautrec often depicted Frenchies in their paintings.
3
German Shepherd
“Josie is turning nine this year! Can you say ruler of our house? She loves going for rides with the family and always knows when the weekend has arrived! We love our girl.” —Theresa Arnold
“We adopted Olivia from Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue. She’s 11 and still enjoys her daily walks (though she naps most of the day) and dog treats.”—Kim Rowe
•German shepherds were initially bred to herd sheep. Today, they excel as police, military, and service dogs, which some attribute to their high trainability. •German shepherds aren’t only known for their intelligence, agility, and speed, but they’re also fiercely loyal to their owner.

Golden Retriever
•The first golden retrievers were developed in Scotland in the late 19th century and first appeared at a British dog show in the early 1900s. They arrived in North America shortly thereafter. •Golden retrievers are used successfully in field trials, hunting, obedience, and as guide dogs for the blind, amongst many other sports and jobs.
5
“City Cat is our mighty hunter! Rodents don’t stand a chance with her on the watch.” —Bonnie Kelley
Bulldog
•The bulldog is used as the mascot for multiple sports teams; most notably, the Yale Bulldogs and the University of Georgia and their famous mascots, Handsome Dan and Uga, respectively. •Historical evidence suggests that bulldogs date all the way back to the 13th century. •Bulldogs have been owned by Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Warren G. Harding.
Poodle
•The standard poodle was initially bred to be a waterfowl retriever. •Despite the poodle’s association with the country of France, the name poodle comes from the German word “pudelin,” which refers to splashing in water. •The flamboyant poodle show coat serves a practical purpose. While retrieving in the water, hunters wanted their dogs to have free range of motion while also protecting their joints and internal organs by keeping them warm.
7
Beagle
“Dakota is the protector of her family. Her greatest feat was treeing a bear. She loves touch and lots of love and enjoys burying things in the backyard.” —Becky Brewer
“Stella is a German shepherd mix. She can walk on her back legs, run sideways when she’s super hyper, and can be very lazy when she wants. Her favorite foods are meatballs and chicken.” —Kelsey Bonstein
•President Lyndon B. Johnson owned three beagles: Him, Her, and Edgar (named after J. Edgar Hoover). •Believe it or not, beagles don’t drool and have minimal shedding. •The origin of the breed name is shrouded in mystery. Some say it derives from the Gaelic word beag, meaning “little” while others say it comes from the sound hounds made while hunting, which is called “be’geule.”
“One-year-old Cola loves to play with our rabbit Tank and swim in our pool.”—Wendy Lowes

•Dachshunds were developed in Germany over 300 years ago to hunt badger. In German, “dachshund” quite literally translates to “badger dog.” •Dachshunds come in three different coat varieties (smooth-haired, long-haired, and wire-haired) and two different sizes (standard and miniature). •The dachshund’s long and low stature was made for the low, dirty subterranean work of digging into a badger’s den to dispatch its occupant.

On the Back Roads Again 5 RURAL R OA D T R I P S by DANNAH NIELSEN
Crowd control, traffic alerts, holding patterns, urban sprawls, weekend warriors. There’s a culture to California that we’re probably not too proud of—the seemingly endless vocabulary assigned to our over-populated lifestyle. While there are viable myths to the “exodus” now occurring, plenty of people are willing to keep on keeping on and reinvent what it means to enjoy the Golden State. This past year on quarantine status we think we found a solution: country backroads.
1
The best thing about backroads is they can literally be found everywhere. The next best thing? They always lead to somewhere and much of the time, somewhere winds up being pretty cool. Around our region, the Sierra Foothills is a phenomenal hotbed of living ghost towns, artifacts, historic buildings, quirky country folk, and a whole bunch of other sightings that make you go “huh?”
While there: Wave at the locals and drive extra slow. Said local saloon also hosts live music.

This town seems to shine brightest when covered with a fresh layer of snow, but any time of year is fun to peek in on this simple forest living ideology. Dutch Flat comes with all the classic staples of a historic town: the one-room church with a steeple, roads that zig and zag in between lots, a local saloon, rusted-over relics, and a small schoolhouse that’s the pride of the community.
Located in: Placer County about 30 miles northeast of Auburn.

Here are a few of our favorite discoveries:
Dutch Flat
2
Fiddletown
Fiddletown lives up to its name and has likely the world’s largest fiddle on the roof of their one-road town’s center. There are a few more novelties on display, but like most backroad towns the main attractions are the photo ops with old doors, old cars, and old signs. Since it’s nestled within the Amador County wine region, we suggest going for the fiddle and staying for the wine. While there: Brown’s English Toffee might just be the only business in town, and they sell some pretty tasty confections. Call ahead to make sure they’re open! Located in: Amador County, approximately six miles east of Plymouth.
3
Iowa Hill
Photos courtesy of Dannah Nielsen.
The road to Iowa Hill is not for the faint of heart but dishes up sweeping views of the American River canyon. There’s one store, but the real town center might be their lively cemetery, where it seems the dead outpopulate the living and with great fanfare to boot. We strongly suggest you take a stroll, as it seems most tombstones here were written hoping to be read. While there: Swing by Iowa Hill Store, which—when open—is a one-stop shop: restaurant, general store, bar, and post office. Located in: Placer County, six miles northwest of Foresthill and nine miles east of Colfax.

Alleghany
Rolling into Alleghany is a bit like rolling onto a movie set. You thought places like this only existed on film but nay: Alleghany is complete with the squeaky empty swing blowing in the wind, trucks that are living out their rusting years in peace, and a smattering of businesses (read: three) that may or may not be open depending on the collective mood that day. Population posted is 78; we met five residents and truth be told, there’s the slightest tinge of envy as outsiders looking in. How wild to live so off the grid. While there: Stop for a drink and bite to eat at Casey’s Place—but Casey said always call ahead to make sure they’re open. Located in: Sierra County, 20 miles from the nearest highway (California State Route 49).
Georgetown
Georgetown has gotten quite a bit of traction in recent years, and we’re not just talking about Jeeps. But while on the subject, much to our pleasant surprise (because I’m a Jeep owner) there’s a subculture of aficionados who point to Georgetown as a Mecca for them, since it’s the home of the Rubicon Trail and Jeepers Jamboree (don’t worry, we got that correct. There’s some history around Jeep vs. Jeepers, and the locals will passionately and exasperatedly explain it). Beyond this brouhaha, Georgetown itself is a perfect small-town layover for your lazy weekend drive and will pop up right when you’re certain you’re lost. While there: Stop at Uncle Tom’s Cabin for a beer fresh out of the fridge and sign your name in the visitor’s log. Located in: El Dorado County, about 30 minutes from both Placerville and Auburn.
OTHER TOWNS WORTH YOUR WEEKEND: Smartsville, Pilot Hill, Rough and Ready, Sierraville, North San Juan, Drytown, and many more.

Tres Calaveras by LORN RANDALL | photos by DANTE FONTANA
“
The plot thickened in the second act, seriously thickened, as in a rich, dark chocolate chicken mole...
”
I
like rooting for the good guys— in movies, life, and the crazy restaurant business. You’re never sure who the protagonists are until the plot unfolds. In the case of a new restaurant, the script reveals itself in the form of your dining experience. The central characters of Tres Calaveras in Cameron Park are sets of brothers and cousins who go out of their way to provide a hero’s welcome. I trekked up the hill from Roseville to a spot near one of my favorite haunts as a kid: Sam’s Town. Sam’s

is long since gone, but the quaint western village mall across the street houses many visit-worthy attractions, including Tres Calaveras. I started the festivities with a citrusy and refreshing shrimp ceviche topped with a mountain of fresh avocado. The interplay of lime juice, onions, cilantro, and fresh tomatoes showcased the plump shrimp. Cerveza, por favor! The plot thickened in the second act, seriously thickened, as in a rich, dark chocolate chicken mole. I’m an avowed fanatic (and sometimes critic) of mole. The complexity of its character

intrigues my palate, and I will (and did) devour a plate of homemade chicken mole like Godzilla devours entire cities. I was like Godzilla on this day. Served with chopped breast meat vs. a leg and thigh quarter, it would particularly appeal to those who don’t like dark meat. Muy bueno! Act III: birria. If you haven’t heard of or tried birria before, you haven’t been paying attention—it’s become as big a foodie buzzword as charcuterie. Traditionally a stew of goat and chilis, birria can be made with any number of proteins, including the succulent beef and lamb offering at Tres Calaveras. I prefer to have the stewed meat served as a taco with the rich broth served alongside to dip your taco into, but with fresh tortillas in hand, I had no complaints. The climax of this four-act drama was another one of my favorites: churros!
Although hardly a cliffhanger ending (if you’ve followed me long enough, you know I’m a churro fiend!), the Tres Calaveras rendition featured deep-fried, cream-filled choux pastry coated in cinnamon sugar with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and drizzles of chocolate. Definitely a churro addict’s panacea. Please stop in and see the real stars: Ivan, Marco, Victor, David, Erick, and Jonathan…good guys making great food!

First things first—this ain't the neighbor kid's lemonade stand! Excuse the slang , but owner Adrienn Chang and Wow Wow Hawaiian Lemonade have taken their business beyond the stand to a whole new stratosphere. The brand new building still has the island neighborhood vibe… just what the effervescent Adrienn was looking for. The ingredients for her gourmet lemonades, acai bowls, superfood smoothies, “ healthy bites” (grain bowls, flatbread sandwiches, and cleverly topped toasts), coffees, and teas are locally sourced (when possible) and handcrafted in-house (Adrienn even makes her almond milk by hand-squeezing almonds!). I sampled a few lemonades like the Lava Flow (coconut, pineapple, and strawberry), the PLG (passion fruit, lemon, and guava), and—my favorite—the Ginger Pineapple , which used monk fruit as a sweetener for those like me watching their sugar intake. All of them were bright and refreshing. I also tried the Cold Brew Crave —acai mix with cold brew, gluten-free granola, bananas, strawberries, coconut, coffee custard, macadamia Tell us about your experience nuts, raw cacao nibs, and honey—an absolute party in my mouth. And because and what you liked by I couldn't quit sampling , I also tried the Egg + Avocado Toast topped leaving a comment on Instagram with ever ything bagel seasoning ; this was something I’d happily eat ever y (@lornwrites), Facebook day. Adrienn's passion for her Maui roots and healthy body, healthy planet (@roundtripkitchen. com), or by emailing philosophy are a perfect match for the WWHL business model—and the El info@stylemg. Nigori is generally the sweetest of sake varieties, and Gekkeikan’s medium-bodied version does this beautifully with subtle notes of honey and tropical fruit. Characterized by its milky appearance—for which it gets its moniker nigori, meaning cloudy—it has a delightfully creamy texture and is chilled for max refreshment.

FRUITFUL FAC T S : D I D YO U K N OW ? The nectarine is a subspecies of the peach, and due to its lack of peach fuzz is often referred to as a shaved peach; characteristically, they’re also smaller and sweeter. Round, oval, and sometimes heart-shaped, plums are extremely high in potassium and are a low-glycemic fruit. California produces 50% of the nation’s peaches. Varieties can either be clingstone, where the fruit clings to the stone, or freestone, where the flesh readily twists away from the pit. Clingstone is generally used for canning, but both types are available with white or golden flesh.
Where We Live
“Twin Peaks Orchards dates back to 1912, and summer has continued to signify stone fruit season. Warm days and cool nights lend to highly flavorful fruit like these juicy yellow nectarines.”
The bright orange-red color of nectarines is a result of the copious amount of betacarotene that the fruit contains, which helps the body maintain a strong immune system, good vision, healthy skin, and protection from cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Sliced peaches will turn brown after cutting; lessen this by rinsing the slices in water mixed with lemon juice. —Courtesy of PlacerGROWN Executive Director Carol Arnold
