10 important reasons to make your Will

Making a Will or Lasting Powers of Attorney is something many of us know we should do but often put it off for one reason or another. Rochdale’s very own Will Lady, Fiona Daly, is helping local people and their families to have peace of mind by simplifying the process. Since launching her client focused business in February 2021, Fiona has gained over 80 Google five star reviews due to the fantastic service she provides.

Here, Fiona provides 10 compelling reasons why having a Will and keeping it up to date is essential:

1. Outline your wishes: A Will allows you to specify how your assets should be distributed among your beneficiaries, ensuring that your wishes are honoured.

2. Choose who will take care of your children: If you have children under 18, a Will lets you choose a guardian to take care of them if you and their other parent are unable to do so. This is often difficult for parents to think about but you are the best person to make that decision, rather than the courts.

3. Lessen the potential for family disputes: When you die without a Will, dividing up your assets can sadly sometimes lead to squabbles and arguments amongst those you leave behind when an estranged spouse or family member inherits from you.

4. Minimise inheritance tax: With careful planning, a Will can help minimise the tax burden on your estate, allowing more of your assets to go to your loved ones.

5. Protect unmarried partners and children from previous relationships: if you’re in a long-term unmarried relationship or have children with a previous partner, a Will is essential to ensure that they are protected and inherit your assets.

6. Choose an Executor: You can appoint a trusted individual to be the executor of your estate, responsible for carrying out your wishes and settling your affairs.

7. Support your favourite causes: Many people want to leave a positive impact on the world after they pass. If you have a favourite charity or cause, a Will allows you to leave a legacy by including them as a beneficiary.

8. Provide a home for your pets: You can name a beneficiary for your pet, leaving them to a trusted friend or family member. You can ask that person to act as a guardian for your pet, and even leave them funds to provide for your pet’s care.

9. Provide funeral instructions: You may not want to think about your own funeral. But if you do think about it now, and leave instructions with your will, you can lessen the burden on your loved ones after you pass.

10. Peace of mind: While many people postpone making a Will, it's essential to remember that life is unpredictable, and having a Will in place can alleviate stress and uncertainty for your family during a difficult time. Creating a Will provides peace of mind, knowing that your loved ones will be taken care of, and your wishes will be respected.
