JOIN THE GREAT ROCHD’ALE’ EASTER ALE TRAIL The countdown to the Great Rochd‘ale’ Easter Ale Trail 2019 Rochdale TCM proudly present is on! Over 100 ales and ciders will be on offer, across six fantastic town centre venues, from 18th-22nd April.
Sponsored by
CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, is backing this April’s ale trail, fully behind the real ale to be had locally – with proper beer in proper pubs and bars, what’s not to love? Paul Ambrose, Town Centre Manager, said: “Following the success of last year’s Ale Trail, we are bringing it back for Easter. Rochdale town centre has become a true destination for beer lovers across the country. While each of the pubs and bars offers something unique to their visitors, they all share the foundation of what makes them great - a warm and welcoming atmosphere, excellent service and a fantastic range of beers.” The five-day event is sponsored by Barton Kendal Commercial and the Rochdale Round Table. Sponsor John Barton said: “Barton Kendal Commercial are delighted to be sponsoring the Rochdale Beer Festival again this year... This event will go from strength to strength and no doubt me and the team at Barton Kendal Commercial will be sampling a few beers.” If you manage to complete the ale trail, you have the option of being entered into a prize draw to win a meal for two at one of the ale trail venues. As there are six venues, six prize draws will be made!! 6894-WIN-STYLE-2016FIN.qxp_Aut-2013 18/11/2016 11:03 Page 30

JOE
THOMPSON “Don’t live life to survive, live life to thrive”
Rochdale midfielder, Joe Thompson, has announced his retirement from football after playing almost 200 games for the club. The courageous two time cancer survivor made his extraordinary comeback by scoring the goal that kept Rochdale in League One at the end of last season. After coming to the decision that he’d “pushed his body to the absolute limit”, Joe said goodbye to adoring Dale fans during the league clash against Coventry. Since then, he’s been popping up on our television screens as a pundit and is now forging a career in motivational speaking. As he celebrates his 30th birthday, Style caught up with Joe to discuss his remarkable story of sheer courage and overcoming adversity. We have to agree, there’s only one Joey T... 4
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
Style: How did you first become interested in football? Joe: When I moved to Rochdale at 8 years old I grasped the concept that everyone in and around Greater Manchester loves football, whereas I’d just been climbing trees and messing about! A friend’s dad had a local team at St Clement’s so that’s where it all started. For me, it was about trying to fit in with a new crowd, but I soon found out I was half decent at football. It was a natural path in a way. What was the best moment of your footballing career? It has to be the last day of the season and that first goal back; I didn’t think it would be such an important goal and mean so much. It meant so much to the rest of the team too as they’d been with me through it all; they’d seen me becoming frail and build back up, watched me training on my own trying to get my strength back. There’s so much that has gone on behind the scenes. So the goal was payback for their patience and honesty. It was perfect. Will you be keeping ties with the club? Yeah definitely. And keeping in contact with football in general. It’s everything I’ve known for going on 20 years. I love it… I must love it! I will always try to help out where and when I can. We’ve seen you on the television a lot recently and you’re a natural - do you fancy being a presenter or pundit? Yeah, this is something that’s been proposed to me, so it’s another option. I do enjoy it. Sometimes I wonder how harsh I could be with my opinion though… everyone thinking I’m Mr Nice Guy, but I do have an opinion and people might not always agree with it! What’s your focus for the future? Being a motivational speaker. I’m really focussing on how I can make myself a brand but keep the message that I want to get across to be authentic. My own podcast where I would talk about different topics would be great.
One of your recent talks was about resilience… Yeah, resilience is the buzzword. When someone asks me about my story that seems to be what they get from it. So I talk about resilience, setbacks, discipline, sacrifice, awareness, and being able to get yourself out of a bit of trouble from time to time! Have you always had this unrelenting positivity or is it due to everything you’ve been through? Nature or nurture! I think it’s ingrained in my mum. I can see the similarities and same personality traits cause she’s not had it easy. She’s always made the best out of whatever is going on so I think that’s transferred to me. Football has taught me a lot; life has taught me a lot; and I’ve probably learnt lessons that I wouldn’t ever want my daughter to learn - but that’s life, it’s about growing and developing. You often find you learn more about yourself through hardship which is not ideal. Now I’m just trying to be as positive as possible. I can’t stand negativity. I used to entertain it and then I’d feel quite drained by certain people/ environments. Now I’ll just take myself out of the situation. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
What advice would you give to anyone facing a cancer diagnosis at the moment? Find out what’s important to you and what you’re willing to fight for. Because that’s what it is – a fight. A lot of the battle is in the mind. Whether you go down the chemotherapy route, holistic route or try to do things a different way, it’s got to resonate with you. You’ve got to believe in it. When I got diagnosed I looked at my diet and went plantbased/vegan. I did that overnight. You need discipline going through it. It’s a way of life for me now and I can feel the benefits everyday in my energy levels and see them in my blood results. So that suits me, I believe in that. You’re an inspiration to lots of people, but who inspires you? Obviously, I’ve got my football idols and I always loved Thierry Henry as a kid, and the old Ronaldo and the new Ronaldo! But I’ve always loved actors like Will Smith, Denzel Washington, The Rock, Reggie Yates. Those are people you probably wouldn’t associate with a footballer, but I look at what they do, the hardships they’ve overcome, their families and what they’ve created and I’m really impressed and inspired by them. (continued...) 5
(...continued) You’ve mentioned that Keith Hill has been like a father figure to you. How do you feel about him leaving Rochdale? There’s been some special times for Rochdale under Keith’s management. For me, I hold him up there because he’s taught me a lot on the field, but he’s also taught me so much off the field. A hard task master, don’t get me wrong, but there’s a good soul under there. Sometimes after training I’d be scratching my head thinking ‘wow why’s he being so hard on me today’ but when you step away from it and grow up as a man you realise why he did that. Incredible times; an incredible journey. Unfortunately, things do come to an end, but he’ll go away and have a rest and I’m sure he’ll have that hunger to get back into football. Time’s move on and I’ll look forward to seeing who takes over at Rochdale – I’m sure he’ll want to do it his own way and rightly so. When you look back and put it into perspective there’s a lot more good times than bad. What advice would you give to young aspiring footballers? If that’s your dream, give it your all. Don’t let it be your entire identity, be open minded, but if you’re enjoying it, give it 100%. 6
Which team do you support? Arsenal! Thierry Henry, Iain Wright, the Invincibles! I take the rough with the smooth as well, but as long as they’re playing attractive football I’ll always love them. Just to check you’re a Rochdale lad... do you know what cruckle means? Yeah, going over on your ankle!! RAFC are hosting ‘An evening with Joe Thompson’ on 28th April. Are you looking forward to it? It’ll be quite an intimate one and might be quite emotional for me. There will be people in that room that have been major parts of my journey so I look forward to having the evening with them and answering questions. What the club have done for me – I don’t know if it can ever be measured. People might not understand the importance until I have my say on it. So yeah, I’m nervous but I’m looking forward to it. I was nervous with the book too, but I feel that as long as I’m being myself and I’m being honest that’s all that matters. Following the success of your autobiography ‘Darkness & Light’, are you planning to carry on writing? Definitely. I’ve got loads of plans. I’m playing with whether to do another www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
chapter to the book or about the huge transition from football into my next chapter which I think is really interesting; I understand why footballers struggle after football if they’ve not got something in place, because you realise how structured your life has been. And I think footballers crave recognition at times, they get it through scoring, playing well, pats on the back, fans saying hello to them - but then it’s gone. So it’s not got to be your whole identity. Is there a quote you live by? I have loads! I write affirmations as often as possible and myself and my wife try to get our little girl to write them too… if we’ve got enough time in between doing hair and bobbles before school. I thought to myself once I’d got over cancer, not once but twice, ‘I’ve done my surviving, now it’s time to shine’ in a way. But make sure you’re giving back and not making it all about you. I guess the main one is ‘don’t live life to survive, live life to thrive’. I truly believe the next chapter of my life is going to be so much bigger than my football career. Ruth Parkinson Joe’s autobiography ‘Darkness & Light’ is available on Amazon.

ANNOUNCEMENT:
Launch of Rochdale Artisan Market The Market Co is thrilled to announce that they will be launching Rochdale Artisan Market on Saturday 30th March and thereafter every last Saturday in the month on The Butts. Rochdale will be brought alive with fresh aromas, vivid colours, eclectic treasures, buzzing crowds – a mere stroll amongst the many stalls of an Artisan Market are enough to invigorate the senses and whet the appetite. These markets aim to keep things authentic, providing a rare but enchanting opportunity to meet the many food & craft producers & suppliers. The local entertainment and local community groups will provide a real sense of ownership, adding to the atmosphere, the mix and bustle reminiscent of yesteryear with a contemporary twist. It will be a haven for anybody who cares about the quality and provenance of the food they eat, for those that seek something different from that on supermarket shelves. It will provide a cornucopia of exquisite handcrafted, artistic items and an opportunity to interact with the artisan who has produced them. Most of our stallholders are themselves primary producers, many local to Rochdale – people who grow, make, create, style, rear, craft or bake the products that they sell. Others are suppliers with intimate knowledge of their products and the people who made them.

ALEXANDRA
MARDELL Twenty four year old actress, Alexandra Mardell, plays bubbly hairdresser, Emma Brooker, in Coronation Street. After first stepping foot on the cobbles in early 2018, she has already made a big impression on viewers, recently being nominated as Best Newcomer at the National Television Awards. Before joining the soap, Alexandra also appeared in ITV drama Vera in 2017 and is co-artistic director of Junk Box Theatre Company. In her Twitter bio (asmardell27) she describes herself as a ‘mashed potato connoisseur’! On screen, her character has dated Corrie favourites David Platt and Chesney Brown and even found herself in a bit of a love triangle with Chesney and Gemma! More recently she has ended up at the centre of Corrie’s latest disaster storyline as the factory roof dramatically collapsed.

Style caught up with Alexandra to discuss the factory collapse scenes, life on the cobbles, and whipped cream moustaches...! www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
Style: How did it feel to step onto the cobbles for the first time? Alexandra: It was so surreal. It still feels strange now. To be a part of something you grew up with takes some getting used to. So you were you a Coronation Street fan before you got the part? Yes, I’ve been brought up with Corrie. My family have always watched it. My Mum never misses an episode! How would you describe Emma? She’s fun! She has a big heart and wants to be everyone’s best friend. A little naive, but she’s only young. Which scene has been your favourite to film so far? I loved the scene with Gemma and Emma in Roy’s Rolls when they had whipped cream moustaches! It was hard to keep a straight face. We were supposed to be having a big row over Chesney but it was actually hilarious. Are you excited to be in your first big disaster storyline with the factory collapse? Yes, it’s very exciting. I was just interested to see how it would all be filmed so I’m really happy I got to be a part of it. When they first announced there was going to be a big disaster in the factory I didn’t think I would be involved as Emma had nothing to do with the factory but she gets involved with the sit in so that is why she is there when it collapses. What was it like filming those episodes? We hear you were covered in dust for weeks?! It was so interesting, but yes, very dusty! The set was my favourite. It was so detailed. They completely rebuilt the interior set of the factory in a studio in Manchester and we were there for weeks filming all the scenes. It was like being involved in a film because we were away from set and it was all so dramatic.
Any hints as to what is coming up for Emma? Is it definitely all over for her and Ches? Emma and Chesney are just friends, and now she’s made a great friend in Gemma as well. So it’s worked out for the best. Emma will always be looking for love, hopefully she’ll find someone one day. Who are your best mates on set? Everyone gets on really well! It’s been great working with Dolly and Sam, we always have a laugh. You are often closer to the people you are working with as you see them the most but actually everyone gets on. Any embarrassing moments? The doors in The Rovers always ‘get me’ - I still can’t remember now if there are push or pull... I dread having to walk out during a scene! Did you have fun at the NTA’s? How did it feel to be nominated? I loved it! It was very surreal because I always watch it at home on the TV. We all had a lovely time. I was so grateful to be nominated. Even to be invited was amazing to me! www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
What advice would you give to aspiring actors? Keep hope, and stick at it. Everyone has different experiences. It’s hard if you don’t get a job you had your heart set on, but it’s important stay positive and try again. Watch as much theatre, TV and films as possible. Do your research. Go to acting workshops. Make your own work. Just keep involved as much as possible, and enjoy it! We’ve heard you’re running 10K soon! Who are you raising money for and how can people donate? I am running in the Manchester Great Run, to raise awareness for Cardiomyopathy, which my Dad passed away from 3years ago. So if this run can help just one person expand their knowledge on Cardiomyopathy, and maybe prevent it from affecting other families, then it’s all worth it for me. RESTORE YOUR SMILE WITH DENTAL IMPLANTS! DR SANDY LIMERICK, IMPLANT SURGEON AT WATERSIDE DENTAL CARE, EXPLAINS THE IMPLANT PROCESS. WHAT IS A DENTAL IMPLANT? A dental implant is a solution used to restore gaps in your smile, replacing anything from a single tooth to a full arch of teeth. The implant replaces the tooth root and is attached to a dental crown, bridge or denture depending on your individual needs. An implant is a titanium screw, which heals with your jawbone over a period of months once placed. Dental implants have been in use since the 1980’s and have proved to be a very successful alternative to removable dentures, which can feel loose on eating and speaking or dental bridges, which involve aggressive preparation of the teeth adjacent to spaces in your smile.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR IMPLANT TREATMENT? Initially a consultation visit is made where you can discuss your needs and assess your suitability for dental implant treatment. A detailed examination of your mouth including your gums and teeth is carried out at this visit. You would typically then require further investigations including clinical photographs, radiographs, tooth models, wax tooth mock-up’s of the proposed solution and a 3D cone beam CT scan before a bespoke implant treatment plan is formulated for you. You would then have your implant(s) placed and after a period of healing of between 2-4 months, your implant(s) will be restored with a crown, bridge or denture solution as per your needs and wishes. Overall you can expect treatment to be completed in around 4 and 12 months depending upon the complexity of your treatment needs. HOW LONG WILL AN IMPLANT LAST? You can expect your dental implant solution to survive up to 25 years depending on maintenance of excellent oral hygiene regime, good general health and regular review with your dentist and hygienist. Implants, like teeth need to be maintained, as they can be susceptible to gum disease, just like teeth.
WHO CAN HAVE DENTAL IMPLANTS? Anyone over the age of 18 is eligible for dental implant treatment to restore their smile, provided they are in good general and dental health and have adequate remaining jawbone. Even where bone loss has occurred since teeth were lost, there are procedures that can be used to bring back bone to make implant treatment possible. There is no upper age limit for dental implant treatment and in-fact removable implant dentures or fixed implant bridges can provide a new lease of life for older patients struggling to eat and speak with loose conventional dentures. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

HOW TO GO VEGAN Veganism seems to be the buzzword of 2019, from the record-breaking number of people who signed up for ‘Veganuary’ this year, to the stream of new vegan products appearing on our supermarket shelves, to an ever-increasing parade of celebrities adopting a plant based diet, including Beyonce, Will.I.Am, Lewis Hamilton, Liam Hemsworth and Joaquin Phoenix. One in eight people in the UK are vegan or vegetarian, and 21% of UK residents identify themselves as ‘flexitarian’, meaning they are actively reducing their meat consumption. But what does being vegan actually mean? Veganism isn’t actually a new thing, and the idea of not consuming animal products has been around for a long time. The Greek mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras didn’t eat meat, along with Leonardo da Vinci, Charles Darwin and Mahatma Gandhi. The term ‘vegan’ was first used in 1944, the year the Vegan Society was founded, who define veganism as the belief that ‘man should live without exploiting animals’. As well as ethical reasons, people choose to adopt a vegan diet as part of a healthier lifestyle. Studies indicate that a well-balanced vegan diet contains all the protein, fat, carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals a human needs, with low amounts of saturated fat, which results in lower cholesterol, blood pressure and rates of type 2 diabetes. The health positives associated with a vegan diet are reflected in the increasing number
14
of athletes choosing to eat plant based, from footballers to tennis players to boxers and MMA fighters. Another benefit of veganism is the reduction of our impact of the environment. Industrial farming practices adopted in the 20th century - and the waste generated by animal agriculture -
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
contributes to species extinction, global warming and deforestation, produces widespread pollution and ocean dead zones, and uses massive amounts of water. With so many people on the planet, the way we eat isn’t sustainable, and a vegan diet aims to preserve the planet as much as possible for the next generation.
So, where do you start? Embarking on a vegan diet can seem daunting, so keep your end goal in mind, whether that is to simply cut down on animal products or eliminate them from your diet completely. Go at your own pace - some people manage to go vegan overnight - but don’t be concerned if you feel you need more time. Like any other lifestyle change, it takes time to determine what will work best for you, and there are numerous approaches you can take. Making small changes to your everyday meals is an easy way to increase the amount of plantbased foods in your diet. You could start by removing meat or dairy one day a week and go from there. Treat it as a game, make it fun. Pinterest and Instagram are full of recipe ideas, from colourful, healthy buddha bowls to ‘dirty vegan junk food’ that looks just as good as its meaty counterparts. There are also lots of dedicated accounts to everyday products which are ‘accidentally vegan’ meaning they contain no animal ingredients (but aren’t marketed that way) and are readily available in all the big supermarkets. Or you could opt to switch over one meal at a time, and try out new recipes for vegan breakfasts, such as fruit and nut porridge, avocado toast, vegan pancakes, waffles, tofu scramble, or my favourite - colourful, healthy smoothie bowls. Plant milks are cheap, tasty and come in a multitude of flavours. Try different ones until you find your favourite – hazelnut milk in hot chocolate is lovely, and oat milk is great in a brew.
Once you’ve got breakfast sorted, add some vegan lunches in the mix. There’s the obvious healthy options of homemade soups and salads, but the increasing range of vegan meat and cheese substitutes available to buy on the high street means that you can make switches effortlessly and cheaply in your favourite sandwiches or wraps. You really don’t have to miss out on any of your favourite foods. Or if you’re on the go, everyone from Starbucks (mac’n’cheese), to Greggs (vegan sausage rolls), have options. And for tea, look East. Thai, Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines feature lots of vegan dishes, are super tasty, and the recipes are quick and easy to knock up if you don’t have much time. Southern Italian and Mexican dishes are also good for delicious, animal free meal ideas. Or if you feel like eating out, lots of restaurants now have not only vegan dishes but entire separate vegan menus to choose from, including dessert. Veganism is becoming more and more accessible, and whether you want to switch completely ‘for the animals’ or just reduce your intake of animal products for health reasons there are thousands of resources available to help and make it easier than it has ever been to go vegan. TALENTED CELESTE ARNOLD TEAM MEET
celebrity clients and fashion giants When Celeste Arnold opened the doors of her Edenfield salon a decade and a half ago, her sister Siobhan joined soon afterwards as a junior stylist… and she has never looked back. As an aspiring hair and makeup artist, she had hopes and ambitions of working with international brands, leading designers and well-known celebrities, and today she can say she’s achieved it all! With heaps of experience working with high profile television stars from programmes such as Hollyoaks, Geordie Shore, Emmerdale, ITV’s Survival of The Fittest and Coronation Street, Siobhan’s dedication and passion has led her to a new and exciting genre of styling. As part of Revlon’s artistic team, assisting Revlon’s Global Influencer John Vial, Siobhan has been lucky enough to be invited to work at London fashion week (LFW) for a number of years, and now Milan fashion week 2019. At her recent appearance at this year’s LFW, she was joined by another member of the Celeste Arnold team, stylist Connor Stansfield. Connor, from Littleborough, started with Celeste Arnold as a Saturday junior aged just 14 and is now a very talented stylist with a busy column at just 21 years old. Connor and Siobhan were privileged to work with designer Josephine Jones who had the first ever all transgender model line-up. ”It has been so exciting to be accepted as part of the Revlon team,” Siobhan told us, “John is a stylist for so many supermodels and he has been a brilliant mentor. One of the first models I met was Erin O’Connor, and the whole experience just blew me away.” Siobhan’s relationship with John and the Revlon team has introduced her to some massive brands, such as fashion giants Iceberg and Belstaff. She has also been lucky enough to meet and work with singer songwriter Neneh Cherry and designers Ingrid Kraftchenko and Nabil Nayal – who has since become a client of the salon with Siobhan recently styling his hair! Talking of the experience Siobhan admitted, “I have had the most amazing opportunities and I still pinch myself. Just meeting these people would be an honour, but to work with them too has been pretty special. “The Revlon Backstage team, led by the amazing John Vial, are such a talented group and they inspire me so much, not only when I’m with them, but also when I return to the salon and work with my lovely clients.” The Celeste Arnold salon has also just welcomed to the team Jenny Warrington. Having trained at Sak’s and Rochdale’s Greg Couzens since leaving school, and being with them for seven years, she has come on board as a senior stylist and is very much looking forward to the next stage of her career. We think she’s in good hands, don’t you?!

ESTATE OF THE NATION
Over the past few years there has been a seismic shift away from the traditional family hatchbacks and estates towards SUVs and 4x4s. It’s true that the added ground clearance and raised driving position is preferred by some, but to paraphrase a wise man, you can’t escape the law of physics and a higher centre of gravity doesn’t always translate into an engaging drive. So like back in the day, I’ve chosen my favourite load luggers that whilst oozing practicality can still put a smile on your face when the going gets twisty.
SKODA FABIA ESTATE Not so long ago it was possible to buy estate versions of both the Renault Clio and the Peugeot 207, however as those ranges have evolved, the estate variants have been dropped, to be replaced by mini-SUVs. Skoda, however, have kept faith and the elongated version of the popular Fabia is a very useful little car.
That is certainly apparent the first time you climb into the cabin of the new Fabia as you notice how incredibly light and airy the cabin feels. The seating position is quite elevated which helps to give the feeling that maybe the second generation of the Fabia is not the small city car you were expecting. The boot is as large as you can expect from a car with these dimensions and becomes even more practical with the back seats folded down. Ride quality is very smooth compared to other cars in this sector and although the Fabia has a relatively high centre of gravity, it is no slouch through the twisty bits. It cruised effortlessly on the motorway and was comfortable at keeping up in the outside lane.

KIA OPTIMA ESTATE Whenever anyone asks me to recommend them a car I generally answer with whatever the most compatible Kia is. The reasoning being the warranty they offer. This means if friends and family buy a car and then have a major issue after six or so months then it is covered and not my fault for not foreseeing the issue. These days it seems the phrase is a bit old hat and when Kia unveiled their new family load-lugger, it was termed a “Sports Wagon” instead. Whilst fashion hasn’t completely taken over function in the design of the Optima SW it has definitely left its mark, the curved body mean that the boot isn’t perhaps as big as it could be but the lines and
aggressive stance will appeal to buyers that want plenty of space whilst still receiving admiring glances from fellow motorists.
Inside, the dash has that feel we have come to expect from Kia, plenty of soft touch materials along with the high tech dash dominated by the touchscreen. Out on the road the Optima SW feels planted and comfortable and as one would expect the interior is peaceful and serene when cruising in the outside lane of the motorway. The Optima SW really shows how far Kia has come and why they have caused more than a few sleepless nights at brands that are currently perceived as more premium.
like to call it, is no doubt the most practical. Inside the cabin you will find the layout that has been adopted across the BMW family with most of the features of the car being controlled by the dial on the centre console which interfaces the screen in the dashboard. The driving position is typical BMW with the feel of the car being built around you as you are seated low in the cockpit and ensconced rather like a fighter pilot.
Round the back, the large tailgate gives plenty of access to the cavernous boot which should prove to be accommodate the trappings
of most families embarking on a trip away or in my case when I had a 5-series Touring for the weekend, three sets of golf clubs, matching golf trollies and three suitcases for a trip away with the lads. It’s pretty much a no brainer to spec a 5-series with BMW’s brilliant X-Drive system which intelligently sends power to all 4 wheels, but in a measured manner, so that the wheels with the most grip receive the most torque. This results in an entertaining drive and also the ability to use the 5-series in all climates and terrains (ground clearance allowing obviously). There is a wide range of engines available but my favourite is also the cheapest. The basic 520 diesel is quick enough to be entertaining but frugal enough to be accessible to most. It’s also the most popular with business users if you are affected by the company car tax rules. Mark D’Apice
BMW 5-SERIES TURING You may be surprised to know that the 5-series has now been with us for 47 years and the current car is the seventh generation of the dynasty. Gently evolving over the years, the 5-series is still, in my opinion, the go to name for a luxury large family car and the estate or “Touring” variant, as BMW www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Dream weddings on a budget... We’ve put together some money saving tips and ideas, which will help you to plan your big day for less, without compromising on STYLE...
PICK AN UNCONVENTIONAL DATE Most wedding venues and even some wedding suppliers will give you a generous discount if you avoid peak times of year. Getting hitched mid-week can also cut the cost of the reception venue by up to half. D.I.Y Save a fortune by making your own invitations, decorations and favours. Handmade is very much the trend these days. We love Hobby Craft’s ideas library (hobbycraft.co.uk), which has hundreds of DIY craft ideas and step-by-step guides. Pinterest is another fantastic and easy-to-use website and app for DIY inspiration and mood boards. PICK SEASONAL BLOOMS Flowers will be significantly cheaper if they are in season. It’s also becoming popular for bridesmaids to wear wrist corsages, which often work out cheaper than bridesmaid bouquets. The bridesmaids have the advantage of having their hands free whilst still wearing flowers that complement the bridal look. SHOP LOCALLY Keep an eye out for local sales and special offers. Independent retailers and service providers greatly value your support and will often go that extra mile to make sure you have the perfect wedding day.
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX Keep in mind that you don’t need to stick to convention or have everything you’re told you need. Do things a little differently… have a buffet or barbeque instead of a sit-down meal or make a playlist of your favourite songs instead of booking a band or DJ. TAP INTO FRIEND’S TALENTS Do you have a friend who is an amazing guitarist? Perhaps an aunt who bakes cakes? A grandad with a classic car? A friend who would make a great make up artist? YHas your mum always fancied herself as a florist? You get the idea! Ask if people will lend a hand in exchange for a wedding gift or at ‘mate’s rates’! 26

STREET EAT RETURNS to Rochdale Town Centre
this May Bank Holiday weekend!
Following on from the huge success of last year’s ‘Street Eat’, the exciting, free event returns on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 May from 11am until 9pm in Rochdale Town Hall Square.
Organised by Rochdale Town Centre Management and supported by Rochdale Borough Council, there will be an array of stalls from the town’s thriving food and drink establishments. You’ll be able to try and buy as many small dishes as you like!
30
Town Centre Manager, Paul Ambrose, commented: “The idea for the event is simple, in that local food and drink businesses set up stalls around the Town Hall Square and showcase what they have to offer. Last year the event was attended by over 3000 people with over 10 local food and drink businesses taking part. We will build on the success of last year’s event by increasing the number of local businesses that attend and offering additional family orientated activities. We aim to provide something for everyone.” “Last year’s event attracted regular customers, local residents and visitors and portrayed the town in a positive light which increased the chances of those attending wanting to return to the town again.” Once again this year’s event will be staged by Rochdale Town Hall, adjacent to the River Roch, utilizing the paved area around the Gracie Fields Statue. With a traditional set up, a dining area in the centre, bunting and lights, it’s set to be an

unforgettable weekend. There will also be free entertainment as you bask in the relaxed ambience of al fresco dining! For more information visit www.rochdale.gov.uk/events or call Rochdale Town Centre Management on 01706 926676.

ITALIAN M
Tom McNeeney, Head Chef of The Ox
Sometimes when it comes to pastas I find myself stuck in a rut, making same. So with that in mind, I decided a few fresh ideas were in order - s some lighter, fresher, brighter pastas that make for cheap and deliciou whole party to feed! Enjoy! You can find loads more
SMOKEY SAUSAGE RAGU This is one of those recipes that I’m thrilled to have up my sleeve when I know I’ve got lots of mouths to feed. It’s smokey, rich and peppery without being too busy - a proper, pocket friendly crowdpleaser. Ingredients: (serves 4) 3 good quality sausages, casings removed 200g smoked ham or smoked sausage, finely chopped 1 tin of whole plum tomatoes 300ml chicken stock 2 tomatoes, roughly chopped 2 ribs of celery, chopped 1 large carrot, chopped 1 large onion, chopped 5 cloves of garlic, chopped small glass of nice red wine 1 bay leaf a few sprigs of thyme, good handful of basil leaves, roughly chopped plenty of black pepper floured muffin
Method So you want to get a good sized pan that can go in the oven and whack it on a medium heat, give it a good splash of olive oil. Once the oil is good and warm, throw in the onion, celery and carrot, give this a few good stirs over five minutes till the onions start to soften, then add in you garlic, give that a minute or two longer. Now it’s time to add your sausages, I’ve just used a good seasoned sausage from our butcher, Chadwick’s, something with a bit of spice will go a long way here so if you’ve opted for a more peppery sausage hold back on the seasoning. Add the sausage meat to the pan and break it up as you stir it in, once it’s had a few minutes add in your smoked ham or sausage (at this point if you’ve got any old chorizo or bacon you want to chop up and lash in go right ahead) give it all a good stir again and chuck in a nice glass of red wine, throw one down yourself while you’re at it.
Once the wine is in, give the bottom of the pan a good scrape and turn the heat down a little, whack the oven on while you’re at it, about 170ºC. Pop your tomatoes into the pan and give a few minutes before following them up with the tinned tomatoes, bay leaf, a few sprigs of thyme (just the leaves, throw away the stems) and the stock, let it come to a gentle simmer then cover and pop into the oven for about an hour. After an hour, carefully take it out of the oven and give the whole thing a good stir to bring it all together - if it’s too thin at this point you can leave the lid off for the last half hour, if it’s too thick add in a little extra stock. Season generously with lots of black pepper, chuck in the basil leaves, give it another stir then pop the lid on for half an hour more and bellissimo! We served ours tossed in some chunky pasta with heaps of parmesan on top but this ragu would work wonders on spaghetti, be lovely on lasagne or make possibly the world’s best cheese on toast! Think about having another nap.

MADE EASY
xford Pub, Rochdale, shares his top tips...
the same tried and tested things over and over, I know a few of you will be the spring’s threatening to actually put in an appearance this year so I’ve gone for us midweek meals but still hold up as great crowd pleasers when you’ve got a e of my recipes on my new website: www.tommcneeney.com GAME CHANGING SPROUT & BACON PASTA Yes, yes, yes I know. Sprouts. Please stick with me on this because if you (like I used to) think that pasta comes in red sauce or white sauce this could be a game changer. Everyone knows sprouts and bacon are best friends and in this pasta they really steal the show. Ingredients Serves 2 (with some left for lunch) 150g smoked bacon lardons 200g sprouts 1 small onion 1 red chilli 1/2 leek 2 cloves of garlic, chopped 150ml chicken stock (or 1 chicken stock cube & 100ml of pasta water) 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning 200g pasta of your choice, I’ve used some fancy stuff I found on that weird aisle in TK Maxx Black pepper Parmesan Method First, prep your vegetables and get a pan of salted water on the boil for your pasta, this whole recipe hangs on everything coming together at the same time. You want to clean your sprouts, get rid of any naff looking outer leaves then shred them as finely as you can, half your leek lengthways and shred that too. Pop them all in a
colander and give a good rinse. Chop up your onion and red chilli, ditching the seeds if you want it less spicy or getting rid of it altogether if you’re a total wimp. Once everything is prepped you’re good to go. Pop your pasta in the, now boiling, water. Get yourself a big frying pan on a medium heat with a little olive oil in, once it’s good and warm throw in your lardons and keep them moving until nicely crisp, remove the bacon but keep about half of the fat in the pan. Now add in the chilli, garlic and onion. Keep this moving for a few minutes until the onion begins to soften then throw in the sprouts and leeks. Now don’t be tempted to move this about too much, you want to get a little colour on your vegetables, with so few ingredients we need to get the most out of each one. After a few minutes give everything
MY PERFECT APEROL SPRITZ
a good toss about, give it a few turns of a pepper grinder, pour in your stock and chuck the bacon back in. Keep this moving until your pasta is cooked then drain off the pasta and pour it straight into the pan. Now keep it all moving, combining the pasta with the vegetables and the stock, adding a little more pasta water if you think it’s too dry. Grate over as much parmesan as you’d like, again keep mixing everything together to combine then lovingly turn out into a massive bowl, lash on some more parmesan & black pepper and there you have it! Consider yourself converted! Top with some freshly torn coriander and a little of your chilli and mango sauce. Cram the lid on and give the whole thing a gentle press, then enjoy, immensely.
Method Any glass works for this but I tend to stick to either a nice tumbler or a decent sized wine glass, half fill your glass with ice, add in 100ml of prosecco first followed by 50ml Aperol, this’ll stop the Aperol sitting on the bottom.
Aperol Spritz’s have had a bit of a revival lately, we lost count of how many we dished out last summer and it’s no surprise, this bittersweet neon tipple is the perfect way to kick start your evening!
Throw in a wedge of orange and an olive on a stick to nibble then pour in a splash of soda water. Ideally at this point you’d turn your phone off and find a spot of sun in the garden to do very little in for a few drink’s time. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

health & fitness: 8 steps to change Jamie Ford, Head Trainer of EASY ST Personal Training, Rochdale, shares his top health and fitness tips. Whatever your current fitness level, follow these simple steps to become a healthier, happier you... GENERAL MOVEMENT This is the most underrated part of good health and especially weight loss. Someone can work hard in the gym three times per week but still not lose any weight or see any positive changes in their body composition - that person needs to look at the other 165 hrs of their week and what they are doing in that time. There are so many fads out there, but the craze for Fitbits and counting steps is the best thing to happen for general health and wellbeing in quite a while. I have clients that come to me struggling to lose weight; I track their steps and they have days where they are doing under 1k steps which is extremely low. Aim for between 8-10k steps to be classed as active consistently and note how you feel increased energy and productivity and even less aches and pains. Also keep an eye on any bodily changes such as reduced bodyfat or weight loss. H Y D R AT E Drink at least two litres of water per day and even try three if training. There isn’t a bodily function that doesn’t require you to be hydrated to work optimally. You would think, in 2019, that we would all be well hydrated, but with our busy lives, people often forget to make it a priority. If you’re suffering from low energy, lack of concentration, headaches or bad skin, stop and question if you are drinking enough. FRUIT & VEG Forget national ‘five a day’ guidelines - double it. Aim for ten per day. Packed with fibre, vitamins and minerals this should be the basis of any standard diet. Not supplements, potions and powders; get the stuff you need directly from the source. It may sound a lot but it’s as simple as: Breakfast - Two types of berries with your oats and yoghurt Snack - Banana and grapes with your mid morning snack Dinner- Sweet potato, peppers, and onions with your chicken Tea - Butternut squash, spinach and broccoli with some fish = NUTRITION THROUGH THE ROOF!

S W E AT Complete 2 x 30 min sessions per week where you work up a sweat. This could be speed walking, running, cycling, a class at the gym, home circuits... just anything that is more intense than a walk and gets that heart rate up.
RECORD Keep note of what you eat. You can either plan food in advance and stick to the programme, use a food diary to note food as you go or learn to use an app such as My Fitness Pal. The last is the one that’s a bit more time consuming but also most effective when used correctly. They all require you to be 100% honest with yourself, and more than anything, accountable. STRESS LESS Don’t ignore stress - look into what causes it. I’m talking all aspects, physical, mental and emotional. Are you sleeping enough? Do you have gut issues? Problem skin? Mood swings? Low energy? All these can be associated with stress and can also cause stress themselves. Stress is a part of life but unmanaged can cause serious physical and mental health issues.
E AT E N O U G H P R O T E I N With each main meal aim to get a solid hit of protein through eggs, meat, fish, Quorn, greek yoghurt. Protein is an important component of every cell in the body, in fact, hair and nails are mostly made of protein. It is used to build and repair tissues and is a vital building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin and blood. SET GOALS Set achievable goals - short/mid/long term. These could be about anything but let’s think in weight loss terms. Your short term weight loss wants to be 2lb per week max - so let’s say your short term aim is to lose between 1-2lb per week consistently for 4 weeks, your mid term goal is to reach between 4-8lb by the end of week 4 and your long term goal is to reach at least 12lb by the end of week 12. At this point reassess, self evaluate and pick new achievable goals. If it went well, excellent - take the positives and pick new goals. If it didn’t go to plan, take a close look at why and learn from that - pick new goals and set out to achieve them. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Centenary celebrations for Rochdale store
Lovicks on Yorkshire Street is celebrating a hundred years in business after first opening its doors on the 10th November 1919. How refreshing to hear about a Rochdale retailing success story when the high street is facing tough competition from online sales.
Back in 1919, William Lovick launched the store using the demob money he received for his service in WW1. Little did William realise that a century later the business would still be a family owned business with a fifth generation now involved.
street, at what was a charitable hospital dispensary on the corner of Yorkshire Street and Elliot Street. William was joined in the business by his son Alan in 1930 who was later to take over the business when William died in 1939, as a result of wartime gas poisoning sustained in the First World War. As family traditions go, Alan was joined by his own son Bill in 1957 who is still managing director of the company and very active in the business. Bill now runs the business with son David and daughter Helen, ensuring the quality of personal service is still maintained.
The original premises were much smaller than the existing building which now houses four floors of home furnishing. Expansion to the business started as early as 1920, just down the

furniture, carpets, vinyl floor coverings and mirrors over four floors. From its small beginnings in 1919 Lovicks has grown with the times and is now the longest and largest established retailer in the town. HERMAN AND THE FIRE STATION Everyone who cares about the regeneration of Rochdale was delighted to hear of the exciting plans to expand and develop the Greater Manchester Fire Service Museum in Maclure Road. The successful bid for Heritage Lottery Fund money was fantastic news and well deserved. We look forward to seeing the plans and images of the building as progress develops. The old fire station is perfectly sited next to both the railway station and the Metrolink stop. In the 1960’s Rochdale Fire Station’s hall was occasionally used as a music venue and pop groups used to play there. On 3rd October 1964 Herman’s Hermits played there in the very week that they had the Number One single with “I’m Into Something Good”. Herman’s Hermits were led by Peter Noone, known everywhere as “Herman”. Noone was born in Davyhulme in 1947 and had attended Stretford Grammar School and, later, Manchester School of Music And Drama. He appeared briefly in “Coronation Street“ as Len Fairclough’s son, Stanley. The name Herman came from a resemblance between Peter Noone and the Sherman character in television’s Rocky And Bullwinkle Show cartoon series. Sherman was shortened to Herman and Herman’s Hermits were born!
40
The group were discovered by Manchester promoter Harvey Lisberg. Lisberg arranged famed record producer Mickie Most to come and see the group play in Bolton; Most saw a facial likeness between Peter Noone and a young John F. Kennedy and thought that Noone’s “little boy lost” image would appeal to all ages. “I’m Into Something Good” was the group’s very first single release and it stayed at Number One in the UK for two weeks, sandwiched between “You Really Got Me“ by The Kinks and Roy Orbison’s “Oh Pretty Woman”. Noone was still only 16 years old at this point. By December 1964, Herman’s Hermits had entered the American charts and “I’m Into Something Good” reached Number 13, eventually selling a million copies and earning a Gold Disc. The group were now officially part of the British Invasion, started by The Beatles earlier in the year and closely followed by the likes of The Rolling Stones, The Dave Clark Five and The Animals. It is no exaggeration to say that the USA went mad about Herman’s Hermits and the group seriously rivalled The Beatles, selling ten million records in just one year! The Americans loved their “Britishness” which was cleverly exploited by their record company and management. “Mrs Brown
www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter”, a track taken from their first album, reached Number One in the USA in May 1965. The song, written by Trevor Peacock (later famous as Jim Trott in “The Vicar Of Dibley”) was not even released as a single in the UK. A quick look on YouTube will remind you of its catchy simplicity, but is still hard to appreciate that this record was the highest first week placing for a single for seven years in the USA.
Peter Noone, like Rochdale Fire Station, is a survivor. He left the Hermits in 1971 and had a solo hit single with “Oh You Pretty Thing”, a David Bowie composition. Noone briefly reunited with the Hermits topping the bill at New York’s Madison Square Garden in June 1973 at a British Invasion nostalgia concert. His biggest stage success was as Frederic in “The Pirates Of Penzance” on both Broadway and in London’s West End. That training at Manchester School of Music And Drama had clearly paid off.
Mireille celebrated their Golden Wedding this year. Peter and a new group of Hermits visit the UK in Spring 2019 for a 30 date tour. Clearly “Something Good” was an understatement. It seems that both The Greater Manchester Fire Service Museum and Peter Noone have a bright future. Richard Lysons www.peternoone.com www.gmfsmuseum.org.uk www.youtube.com
Peter Noone is now a youthful 71 years old and is based in the USA where he still regularly performs live. He and his wife
The group could do no wrong in the USA and had another Number One single with “I’m Henry VIII I Am”, a music hall song from 1911! Their version of George Formby’s “Leaning On A Lamp Post” reached Number 9. In 1967 the group’s thunder was pretty much stolen by a group featuring another former Coronation Street star, namely The Monkees and Davy Jones. As The Monkees’ star rose, Herman’s Hermits’ star rapidly fell. The latter’s last big American hit was “A Kind Of Hush” in the spring of 1967 just as Monkeemania spread around the world. Herman’s Hermits continued to have hits in the UK until 1970 and were often seen on Top Of The Pops.

THEATRE REVIEW: St Ann’s Players “Trivial Pursuits”
Protect your family and your assets.
This was amateur dramatics in the raw - the behind the scenes drama of what goes on before the show goes on so to speak - a tale of infidelity, sex, intrigue, geriatric nymphomaniacs, TV sets with poorly adjusted aerials…and plenty of laughs. Nick, played in a reliable matter of fact way by Dave Stopford, is the director of the amateur dramatics group and has invited the leading lights of the society to a barbecue at his house to announce, in grand fashion the next production.
Clive Hartley is superb as Teddy, camp and bitchy when riled. He can be everyone’s friend, but a tiger when riled or so he tells us with a flounce and a flourish. His ally is Joyce, played in an emotional (as a newt) way by Judith Mansfield. Her past glories from days gone by are legendary as is her drinking these days and is trying to live down being the Calamity in Calamity Jane, in the last production. Joyce’s cause for a leading role, in turn, is being championed by both Teddy and her sister who is Nick’s wife Roz, played with calm among the chaos by Sue Howarth.
We have experienced and caring solicitors who work exceptionally hard to ensure that all your needs are met. Also pitching in for her choice of show and a part that would
Nick is confidently in full control until he discovers from the meek and mild treasurer Pearl played meekly and mildly by Michaela Kitchen that the society is deep in the red. That leaves Nick with a bit of a dilemma and when a few skeletons come clattering out of the cupboards he ends up promising starring roles to a whole raft Probate & who Administration of Estates of society members are slowly working their way through his drinks bar as he tries to tap-dance his way through the minefield he Court of Protection & Deputyships is creating for himself.
Making a Will
Add in a suicide attempt, a marriage meltdown and a random loony onInheritance the roof attempting to realign the TV aerial. With four Tax Planning widely different musicals promised, along with associated starring roles, to four different people the chances of a happy ending are diminished by the minute.
be several years to late for her, is Mona, played with a sly, conspiratorial, confidence by Joanne Frost.
Contentious Probate & Disputes
Moping in the corner is Derek, filthy rich and as exciting as cold Lasting Power of Attorney gravy, played with a desperate intensity by Tim Keiley as his divorce to wife Deirdre, played with stuggling, resigned patience Trusts by Annette Nodwell comes closer.
Residential Care Planning
Lurking in the background is the young, pretty, ambitious Jessica played bitchily by Liz Gratton; meanwhile clattering about rearranging TVs and aerials we have Eddie, who might have come with Deirdre but was there entirely by accident - which is probably how he arrived on the earth in the first place - played by Kevin Lawman.

The resulting chaos with some very funny moments and nice one liners. Director Neil Bamford kept up a decent pace and he managed to bring out the mood swings between anticipation and devastation as hopes and dreams first grow and then are dashed. A mention too for an excellent set which gave us a typical, middle class, suburban patio as a backdrop to the real drama hidden behind amateur dramatics. The result was a solid, enjoyable production with plenty of laughs and an unexpected twist at the House, end above the Exchange Shopping Centre which wasRochdale thoroughly enjoyed by the full houses each night.

HOW ARE YOU PEELING? The beauty world has exploded recently with the rise of the face peel. Peels are the new ‘must have’ in the beauty industry. They get rid of dead skin cells and resurface the skin, to reveal brighter newer skin cells which are radiant and hydrated. There are many different types of peels available on the market so it can be confusing to know which is best for you and your skin. Each peel has an individual acid or combination of acids mixed at concentrations to help with different skin needs. The peels work by the acidic breakdown of the layers of the epidermis (the upper most layers the the skin we can see feel). Different strengths and concentrations are applied by your professional in the salon to safely resurface and brighten the skin instantly. Here’s a quick run through of the most popular acids and their uses and benefits... LACTIC ACID - an AHA acid (alphahydroxy acid) which is a gentle method of peeling the surface of the skin. Lactic acid is essentially a sour milk so is gentle and suitable for even sensitive skin to antioxidise the skin, even complexion and boost your collagen for anti ageing benefits.
SALICYLIC ACID - this acid is a BHA (Betahydroxy acid) and is commonly found in resurfacing products for acne skins because it penetrates deep into the pores to clean and clear them, so is perfect as a treatment to remove dead skin cell build up and help to clear an oilier congested skin. KOJIC ACID - an amazing acid which not only boosts the production of collagen and elastin to reduce the effects of ageing and promote new cells, but also helps to brighten and give radiance to dull skins which suffer from hyperpigmentation. GLYCOLIC ACID - similar to lactic acid in that it is a gentle AHA acid, and works on the surface of then skin making it suitable for all skin types to brighten and give a glow to otherwise dull skin. VITAMIN C – a natural fruit acid which is not only a brilliant antioxidant, removing toxins from the skin, but also lightens and brightens sun damaged skin and excess melanin in the form of hyperpigment. The peel procedure is extremely comfortable and involves a face cleanse and sanitise before the most suitable skin peel is applied evenly over the skin. Your skin type and the concentration of the peel used will determine the length of time the peel is to be left on the skin - this can range from 1 minute to anything up to 15 minutes for maximum results. The peel
is then neutralised with a solution or mask which hydrates and brightens. I would recommend the Hylafuse mask by Dermapen world (available as part of the peel treatment at The Retreat). Hylafuse masks are packed and infused with the highest quality hyaluronic acid which plumps and instantly hydrates the skin, filling out any superficial lines and wrinkles and giving a renewed, refreshed look to the skin. Your skin post-peel is left smoother, brighter, plump, hydrated and glowing with the added benefits of increased cell turnover and a more even complexion. To decide which peel is right for you a thorough skin consultation is carried out to ensure you are suitable for the peel and to decide the outcome you would like to achieve. This season is the perfect time to get a skin peel. To literally peel away the layers of tired, dull, lack lustre skin in order to reveal bright new skin leaving you fresh faced for spring. For further information please contact The Retreat for your complimentary personal skin peel consultation. Emma Fitton / The Retreat

PIONEER PANTRY LAUNCHED IN ROCHDALE The Co-operative Heritage Trust who run Rochdale Pioneers Museum have launched a new community outreach project, Pioneer Pantry. The project aims to introduce local people to nature of co-operative history and culture. For many people living in Rochdale and the wider region, the concept of what a co-op and how it is different, can be hard to understand. Older generations who grew up with family membership and the ‘divi’ had direct experience of what ‘shopping with the co-op’ meant. For many people, being a member and receiving a dividend allowed them to buy good quality produce at fair prices, save for the future, and while doing so, have a say about how profits and the business might be run. The first successful consumer co-op at number 31, Toad Lane, was born in winter 1844 out of necessity and dire economic circumstances in Rochdale at a time of unemployment popularly called ‘the hungry 40’s’. The ‘Pioneer Pantry’ works in a similar way to the early shop set up in the 19th Century. It is not a food bank, but is member run and owned, with members paying one pound (the same as in 1844) to join. For that, they can
46
come every Friday to fill a shopping bag for just £2.50. Food is donated through the Co-op ‘Fareshares’ scheme to minimise food waste. From April, the group will be investing the first profits into a small plot of land at the St Mary in the Baum church to grow their own vegetables and hope to provide cookery demonstrations. This is not only a practical response to austerity, but designed to showcase how co-operative action can be put to use in modern austerity hit Britain. It is a way that people who are struggling can support one another without referrals or handouts. If you would like to join the pantry as a member, just turn up at Rochdale Pioneers Museum on any Friday afternoon between 12 and 3pm. To volunteer, please get in touch with museum staff for more information. Follow on Twitter @PioneersMuseum, Facebook TheRochdale-Pioneers-The-Museum and Instagram at @ pioneersmuseum

ROCHDALE RSPCA NEWS & EVENTS We start 2019 by thanking all our volunteers, staff and supporters for helping the Rochdale branch continue with its essential animal welfare work. The value of our volunteers cannot be underestimated but in return we can offer companionship and a purpose in life. Increasingly we are finding that contact with animals at the Rochdale Animal Centre and volunteering in our charity shops can help with mental health and loneliness. Come and have a look at what we do and have a coffee and chat. We recently appealed for your support and raised fantastic amounts for our animals. The Christmas Dinner Appeal raised over £1,300 and The Winter Raffle raised £1.000. IN 2018 WE CARED FOR ALMOST 400 WONDERFUL ANIMALS AND 265 WILDLIFE CASUALTIES. TIGGY is a firm favourite with all of the staff. He is a gorgeous 15 year old Bengal cat who came into our centre in a bit of a sorry state suffering from cat flu. He now has the all clear but it has now come to light he has kidney disease due to his age, therefore he needs to be kept on a renal diet. He is also on medication that he will need to continue for the rest of his years. If you think you can offer this lovely boy a comfy bed or lap to snuggle on please contact our animal centre.
HOMER AND BART were removed from a home when the owner was struggling to cope, there were over 70 guinea pigs in the home. They are now hoping to find a forever home.
WILDLIFE An increasing part of the work of the Animal Centre concerns wildlife casualties rescued by RSPCA Inspectors in the region.
The staff never know what will arrive next and in recent months have had swans, geese, owls, herons, bats, foxes, stoat and hedgehogs brought in. Three baby field mice recently needed to be bottle fed throughout the day. Spring will bring one of the busiest periods for the RSPCA especially when well meaning people mistakenly pick up fledglings. Please check the National RSPCA website for seasonal advice.

EDGAR WOOD – ARTS AND CRAFTS IN MIDDLETON Throughout the 1800’s, towns had grown larger as people exchanged rural life for work in the many mills and factories that were now part of Britain’s booming economic system. Canals, then railways, transported an ever-growing array of goods around the country and abroad. The Industrial Revolution had changed the way that people worked and lived and domestic industries of previous years now became hugely mechanised. From the 1850’s, many influential people thought that people had become removed from the process of manufacturing, that it had become soulless and attempts were needed to return to a more organic way of working. A group of artists, designers and craftspeople began what was known by 1888 as the Arts and Crafts Movement. With the charismatic artist 52
and designer William Morris as it’s figurehead, the Movement was radical in its politics and lifestyle. The hand crafted goods it created were inspired by nature, combining medieval and gothic styles and art nouveau. The irony was that any item they produced was costly, both in time and material used, so that the only people able to afford such things were the wealthy industrialists that had initially and unwittingly brought about the Movement. Edgar Wood was born in Middleton in 1860 and went on to become an excellent proponent of this style. The son of a wealthy local mill owner, he attended the small Queen Elizabeth Grammar school. His father intended for him to follow into the family business but Edgar saw himself as an artist - a compromise saw him train as an architect. Though he initially found this tedious, he qualified and set up in practice in www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
Middleton in 1885. He excelled in all manner of artistic endeavour, whether it was making furniture, metal work or painting. His first commission was for an ornate, town centre drinking fountain, paid for by his mother, and soon other work was commissioned. One was Temple Street Baptist church in built in 1889, comprising of many features which were to become his style, arched windows, contrasting brickwork and Britain’s first stained glass Art Nouveau window, featuring the Movement’s emblem of a rose. Success soon allowed him to move his growing practice to Cross Street, Manchester in 1892 and in 1896 he set up the Northern Art Workers Guild. Long Street Methodist Church is, arguably, the finest of his Middleton works and completed in 1899. The unique church was designed, with tall and high windows to maximise light with no trace of Victorian gloom. A pink sandstone carved angel adorns
the pulpit. The church adjoins a primary school with unique internal features, lecture hall and garden complete with an arched gateway. A few metres away is the “pink” bricked ex - Manchester and Salford County Bank built in 1892 which was a mixture of Art Nouveau and Jacobean styles. Further along Long Street is Edgar Wood’s own residence, easily identifiable by its white exterior. He built “Redcroft” for his own family use, adding a cottage garden to the rear. This and the adjoining “Fencegate” were built in 1885. His studio was in the upper story and the windows were designed to let in much light. However, he had an unfortunate accident when inspecting the room, a piece of ceiling plaster dislodged and fell, causing him to lose an eye.
Edgar renovated St. Leonard’s church ceiling featuring his decorative carved pagan bosses. He designed the striated sandstone steps and Exhedra in Jubilee Park, which were intended to sympathetically highlight the church on top of the hill. Though much of Edgar’s work was done in Middleton, he completed a number of commissions for wealthy clients around Cheshire and West Yorkshire, each one in a differing style whilst retaining all the Arts and Crafts features.
Further along are two more superb houses, at 51–53 Rochdale Road; built in 1900 they look almost Tudor with their darker brown hues. Edgar later developed a more modernistic approach to design one of which can be seen in Mellalieu Street. This has a flat roof and is surrounded by a low white, almost industrial style fence. Much ahead of its time when built in 1906 and predicting designs of the 1930’s.
In Rochdale, the young Edgar had been inspired by the superb Town Hall which contained many features that were to become associated with Arts and Crafts. He went on to build a large house in Rochdale’s Marland, styled on a large rural hall, its yellow exterior giving it impact. Edgar Wood has only relatively recently become the subject of much interest, possibly due to his quiet and reticent manner. He was, though, often seen walking around Middleton in the manner of “an artist” complete with tall hat and a walking cane. He was one of eight children, but only three survived into adulthood, all three inheriting the father’s fortune www.issuu.com/stylemagazine
upon his death in 1909 of £59, 000. This would be over £4.2 million nowadays. Throughout the 1890’s, Edgar toured France and Italy and was inspired by the light and colours there. Falling in love with North East Italy he settled out there in later years. Annie, his wife, wished to stay in England though he went with her blessing and he designed a house for her to remain in. Extensive and expensive restoration of Edgars buildings have recently taken place with some huge effort from the Edgar Wood Society and Middleton Civic Association. Distinctive green plaques now adorn each building to aid with location. A film about the life of Edgar Wood, “A Painted Veil” was released in 2017 and shown to a packed audience in the “Edgar Wood Centre” (Long St. Methodist Church) with participants attending from Italy. This DVD can now be purchased from The Edgar Wood Society. Though there is little written work detailing the many buildings, “Edgar Wood” guided walks take place regularly and are highly recommended to help you enjoy his many buildings found around Middleton. Princess Anne at the official opening of the Hospice with former Mayor of Rochdale Norman Angus
SPRINGHILL HOSPICE TURNS 30!
This year marks 30 years since Springhill Hospice opened its doors. In those 30 years the Hospice has developed a standard in Hospice care like no other and is quite unique in its approach. The journey began in the early 1980s when its founder, Margaret Geoghegan, saw there was a need in the Borough for a Hospice. What she did next would create a legacy that the people of Rochdale and beyond holds close to their hearts 30 years on. She was at the forefront of the whole appeal to create a facility for end of life care in Rochdale. The Hospice opened on the 8th October 1989. Since then Springhill has grown and developed with its own education suite, Day Hospice and Community Nursing Service. It also has a line of local retail shops, its own lottery and its very own café, “Coffee at the Craven”, all helping to support its important work. Robert Clegg, Chair of the Board of Trustees at Springhill Hospice, has been part of the Springhill journey since its beginnings. We spoke to him about his time working with the Hospice... How did you become involved with Springhill? “In the early 1980s I was the Hospital Secretary at Birch Hill
People from all over Rochdale came to be a part of the cutting the first sod at the site of what would soon be the Hospice in 1987

Hospital. I learned early of the plans to build a Hospice for Rochdale. My boss at the time was Secretary of the Appeal Committee who Margaret Geoghegan had gathered together to raise the funds to build and equip this new facility. When he left in 1986 I took his place. “I wrote hundreds of letters to large charities seeking external funding and remember being really excited when a cheque for £25,000 arrived.

In July, the Moonlit Sprint or Stroll supporters galore donning Springy
skip or jump the 10km route starting from Rochdale’s Rugby Union C green brigade of invertebrates totalled a bouncing £6000!
Locally the Rochdale Observer took up the cause and encouraged people to fundraise and every week published a list of donations that had been received. “Slowly but surely the £1.5 million needed to pay for the building, furnish and equip it, and the first three months running costs had been raised and the doors opened in October 1989.” Over the past 30 years and before the Hospice was even built there has always been support from the public and local businesses. Thankfully this support shows no sign of slowing down with continued backing from the people of Rochdale and beyond in their fundraising endeavours. What are your memories of the fundraising and events over the years? “We have been very lucky to employ some incredibly talented fundraisers each of whom have brought their own style to the job. We have hosted events such as, musical events at Champness Hall, Last Night of the Proms at Honresfeld, our Man and Woman of the Year events, Golf Days. There have been so many. “One event I particularly remember was watching people walking on hot coals on the car park at Rochdale Football Ground – I took my hat off to them – but did not take my shoes off! COMMUNITY NEWS RINGING ENDORSEMENT AS ROCHDALE TOWN HALL BELLS ARE NAMED Rochdale Town Hall’s bells have been named following a special competition that chimed with people across the land. Judges gave a ringing endorsement to five names: Our Gracie, the Bamford Bell, Little Ben, the Bobbin Bell and Recedham. The gongs were also christened with a family name – the bells of Cooperation. The competition winners were:- St Andrew’s CE Primary School, Rochdale (The bells of Co-operation); Holy Family Primary School, Rochdale (Our Gracie); Louise Taberner (Recedham); Gordon Fletcher (Bobbin Bell); Ian Jenkins (The Bamford Bell); Hilary from Cheshire (Little Ben). The naming competition was launched after the bells received national publicity when they rang out across the land as a stand in for Westminster’s world famous Big Ben, which is undergoing repairs, on BBC Radio 4 over Christmas. Hundreds of brilliant ideas were submitted from residents across the borough and beyond – with one entry even mailed in from Australia. Where more than one person had suggested the same name, a draw was held to choose the winner.
The winners were announced live on BBC Radio Manchester’s Phil Trow show, which was broadcast from Rochdale Town Hall on Wednesday 27 February. The show also featured local celebrity chef Andrew Nutter and Rochdale actor Ben Davies who has starred in Hollyoaks and Waterloo Road. Councillor Allen Brett, leader of the council, said: “The response was staggering, so a huge thanks to everyone who sent us their excellent ideas... We chose names that reflect the borough’s values, history and rich heritage. As leader of the council I am proud that Rochdale has received so much positive publicity on the back of the bells being played live on BBC Radio 4. This is another exciting chapter in the history of the Rochdale Town Hall as we begin an ambitious £16m redevelopment scheme for our iconic grade I listed building.” Miss Morris, a year 2 teacher at St Andrew’s Primary School, said: “We are thrilled that one of our selections was chosen. The competition sparked a lot of interest at the school and it linked in with the children’s project work and the school’s values. It was a great idea and the children were so excited about winning and going live on the radio.”

CHATTY CAFE SCHEME WINS INNOVATE IN AGEING AWARD The Chatty Café Scheme, first launched in 2017 by Oldham mum Alex Hoskyn, were over the moon to win the Innovate in Ageing Award 2019. This award was created by Just Group and the International Longevity Centre who were looking for solutions to the growing problem of vulnerability in later life. The scheme, which aims to get people talking and reduce loneliness, was successful due to its simplicity and the judges liked the fact that it aims to mix up various age groups.
Chatter & Natter tables are aimed at all ages. The idea is that cafes dedicate one of their tables to those on their own looking for someone to chat to. Alex came up with the idea when she was a new mum feeling isolated, craving adult conversation. During a visit to a café, Alex observed an elderly lady sat alone, who appeared fed up. At another table she saw a man with additional needs and his carer both looking equally down. Alex commented: “I thought what a positive impact we could have had on each other if we had all sat together... Sometimes just an interaction with another human can brighten your day”.

Chatter & Natter tables create a safe environment for people to talk, whether it’s for five minute chat or an hour or so of good conversation. Alex commented: “Winning this award has meant a lot to us and we have recently had many more cafes joining the scheme so we have certainly had a fantastic start to 2019!” Rochdale was one of the first boroughs in the country to host a number of Chatter & Natter tables for its residents to use. Now over 500 cafes and restaurants across the country have signed up, including one of the UK’s most popular coffee chains Costa Coffee. The project ‘Up our street, exploring Rochdale’s pioneer places’ has received £47,800 to support Young People learning about their communities and identity, and will allow the Trust to understand how best to work with and represent younger audiences in the future. The Trust wants to work with and engage with young people to make the story of co-operation more meaningful. Young people involved in the project will be taking trips around the borough, looking at collections and finding out how and why the movement began here as well as what it means for life in the 21st Century. They will explore Rochdale’s hidden histories through film making, podcasts and creativity.
