DENISE WELCH

4 | Rochdale Style

style exclusive Denise Welch is a popular actor, television personality and dedicated patron of Rochdale charity, The GEM Appeal. Her many television credits include Coronation Street and Waterloo Road which she filmed in Rochdale from 2006-2010. She is now a regular panellist on popular ITV chat show, Loose Women. Back in September 2019, Denise was inundated with supportive messages after sharing a heartfelt video of herself on social media in the midst of a mild episode of clinical depression – explaining to her followers in a series of clips both the physical and emotional effects she experiences. In her new book, ‘The Unwelcome Visitor : Depression and How I Survive It’, Denise describes how post-natal depression, following the birth of her son - The 1975 singer Matty Healy - was her first experience of mental health issues. She has since spent three decades learning to live with depression and is now on a mission to encourage people to be open about mental health issues, and reassure them that they too can take back control. Style caught up with Denise to discuss her bestseller, life during the pandemic, her love for trash TV and why her heart is with the people of Rochdale... How does it feel to have a bestseller? I’m over the moon to be honest. I get the most amazing comments every single day. My story and my own experiences are helping so many people, more than I thought possible. But at the same time, as much as it’s heartwarming to hear, it’s also heartbreaking in a way, that so many people are relating to my story. So the success of the book is a double-edge sword. You’re not claiming to advise people on how to beat depression, but instead reassure readers that they can live a full life alongside it… Yes, my book is about trying to enjoy the times in between episodes and not be defined by depression. The reason it’s called ‘Depression and How I Survive It’ as opposed to ‘How To Survive It’ is because I have no qualifications in this. But my message is that the unwelcome visitor will always leave!

You were one of the first people to speak out publicly about post-natal depression after you had Matty - do you feel as though awareness of PND has grown or do you think there's still a way to go? I think awareness has grown of how serious the condition can be and there are lots of amazing support groups. 31 years ago we didn’t have social media! Now a quick Google search and I’m sure you’d be able to find a local group in your area. So from that point of view there are definitely more resources, sadly not Government funded of course. But - I still don’t think that enough people have been spokespeople about the horrors of postnatal depression. There is still a stigma and a taboo about the illness which I didn’t think was quite as big as it is, until I’d written the book. The pandemic seems to be creating or exacerbating mental health issues for some people. How have you found it? My depression is endogenous, so I’ve just been very lucky that I haven’t had an episode during the pandemic – it’s just how it’s happened. My last episode was September when I did the Instagram videos which led to the book. It’s not a generalisation, but just from my experience of talking to a lot of people throughout this pandemic, some people who have formerly suffered from anxiety

found actual lockdown a relief, because everyone was on the same page as them. Nobody was going to work or socialising, so they didn’t suffer from social anxiety. They weren't looking at Instagram and comparing their lives with other people’s glamorous lives so they didn’t suffer from status anxiety. It’s all smoke and mirrors as we know but that’s how the anxious person perceives the world. And some other people are experiencing mental health issues for the first time. A great example is my friend and Loose Women colleague, Carol McGiffin. Carol has never understood depression and anxiety; she’s always been very supportive of me, but she’s never understood it because she’s hasn’t had any lived experience. But Carol said this pandemic is the first time in 60 years that she’s ever felt her mental health out of her control. And for her to say that is quite something. How did you find lockdown? I loved proper lockdown. Matty and Louis were together in Oxfordshire so I knew that my kids were safe. Lincoln [Townley - Denise's husband of 7 years] and I love each other’s company. The sun was shining. I loved going out getting food, cooking and having time to do things I don’t normally do. There was something quite special about those days and spending so much time with loved ones. (continued...)

Rochdale Style | 5

style exclusive (continued...)

Did you have a favourite lockdown boxset? Lincoln and I love documentaries – we’re much more documentary based than drama based, but we did love Succession. And I have the Hayu app – it’s every single rubbish American reality show the day after they get it in America. So it’s Real Housewives, Below Deck, Married to Medicine – all the s*** I love! Some people meditate, I watch trash TV. Trash TV got me through lockdown! Any lockdown projects? Myself, Julie Graham, Tamzin Outhwaite, Tracy-Ann Oberman, Alison Newman and Angela Griffin all filmed a web series called Dun Breedin’ about women going through different stages of the menopause - it’s on YouTube. We were filming from our own homes, using our families as the crew! Lincoln was my Director of Photography and also played my partner; Louis played my grandson, filming in Oxford. So we became filmmakers in lockdown! They proved so popular that we may be doing a series in real life. Is your life fast-paced again postlockdown? Well the book has been full-on but I could not be more grateful for every single interview I do. So many people have sent me messages after just reading an article or hearing me on TV. If one person reading this in Rochdale relates to my story then I’m grateful. So my life is full-on but it’s also been more home based. I’ve almost got a little studio here, with my ring light and my cameras. Even this week I did Loose Women from home. I love going to London and doing Loose Women from the studio and seeing my pals down there too, but it’s also nice to be doing a bit from home. Your son Matty Healy [lead singer of The 1975] often uses his platform to raise awareness of important issues. Do you think that's a trait you've passed on? I think that having a social conscience is definitely something that my kids get from me. I’m not saying their dad [actor, Tim Healy] hasn’t but I’ve always been more outspoken simply because of the types of shows I’ve done. Certainly, talking about mental health, the LGBTQ community - they definitely get that from me. And Matty has such a huge following and uses his platform for good in that respect, so I’m very proud that he does that. 6 | Rochdale Style

You’ve been patron of Rochdale charity, The GEM Appeal, for 24 years now. How did you first get involved? When I was in Coronation Street, I was at a North West Women’s Achievement Lunch where Karen [Johnson] was one of the nominees. She approached me and showed me a picture of her boys Simon and Mikey - she was going to ask me about becoming involved; I immediately saw the picture and without Karen saying a word I said, “oh my god they’ve got Hunter Syndrome”, and she was really shocked that I knew about the condition. It was because my friend’s son had Hunter’s and I was actually with him the day he passed away aged 16. So I immediately got a big lump in my throat. She asked me if I’d become a patron and that was how I got on board! You’ve organised some incredible balls to raise money for the GEM Appeal… We have - we obviously can’t have the ball this year, sadly. So we’re hopefully having it in March 2021 and that will be our 20th anniversary ball. It’s a small charity but they’ve raised over £2 million which is unbelievable with such a small team. It’s quite incredible and that’s really due to the support of the people of Rochdale. What’s the best thing about Rochdale? I absolutely love the Town Hall where we used to hold the summer GEM Appeal balls. And I love the people of Rochdale I think they are a resilient, fantastic crowd.

My heart is definitely with the people of Rochdale because they’ve supported the GEM Appeal for 25 years now which is just amazing. You’ve had such a varied career so far, is there anything else you’d love to do in the future? My ambitions are less career orientated and more life orientated. Selfishly, I want to be able to travel. I love America - I’m sad about the situation out there at the minute, especially with Trump, and just everything that’s happening all over the globe. The thought that I can always hop on a plane has always been my sanity so that’s the thing I really want to do. Ambition wise, I feel very lucky at 62 that I’m still working and people still deem that I’m relevant in some ways. So just to be able to keep working, keep a roof over our heads and be a good wife and mum! Ruth Parkinson

ROCHDALE TOWN CENTRE'S

THRIVING FOOD & DRINK SCENE Rochdale’s exciting and evolving food and drink scene is cementing its reputation amongst North of England as a must visit destination. Our town’s fascinating history, stunning architecture and rich industrial past is echoed and celebrated in many of the historic food and drink venues. Whether it be Mannerist, situated in the former Union Bank of Manchester building, The Medicine Tap in the listed Post Office, Yates in the former county court, the late 18th century Reed Hotel, The Regal moon in the old cinema or The Baum on Toad Lane, Rochdale has a plethora of venues which celebrate their heritage whilst offering the very finest in modern cuisine and drink. Rochdale’s burgeoning food and drink scene places a firm emphasis on the finest in local produce from around the region and authentic ingredients and this coupled with talented chefs has proved instrumental in the success of the town's long standing favourites like La Mancha and Vicolo Del Vino and exciting new eateries like Bombay Brew. There's a vibrant, positive atmosphere in the town centre with hospitality businesses encouraging one another. Paul Ambrose, Business Improvement District Manager, commented: "Every single business owner greets you with a smile on their face and is full of nothing but enthusiasm and praise for what you would normally call their competitors. Every business seems to love what others are bringing to the table and the whole town centre feels like one big food and drink loving family". Cllr John Blundell Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Business, Skills & Employment said: "The town centre's food and drink offer has gone from strength to strength over the last few years. You'll now find an array of restaurants, coffee shops, pubs and bars to suit every occasion, mood and budget. The growing food and drink offer will hopefully also have a beneficial knock-on effect for the town centre retail trade, with people taking the opportunity to shop in addition to eating and drinking". The Flying Horse, voted Greater Manchester’s best pub by CAMRA for the last two years running is enjoying a renaissance along with other popular venues along Packer Street. The street has been transformed into a pedestrianised continental-style outdoor dining area, named Gracie’s Garden, also serving customers of The Empire, Yate’s and KoKo’s. 8 | Rochdale Style

Inside and outside The Flying Horse it’s all now seated table service, with customers able to order traditional pub grub, and an extensive selection of cask and keg ales. There’s also a tasty new beer garden menu featuring the pub’s famous burgers and loaded fries. Gracie’s Garden is also shared by one of Rochdale’s most popular and oldest live music venues, The Empire. Empire’s rich history even includes a performance from child prodigy, Gracie Fields! These days, the Empire boasts a separate cocktail bar serving an exciting selection of classic and modern cocktails, plus a well stocked main bar offering over twenty gins. Just next door, on the corner of Packer Street and Fleece Street, Yates has served as both a post office and more recently a county court for over 60 years. Its illustrious and fascinating history is still evident in the impressive architecture of the venue with its modern and industrial décor. The versatile venue serves great value food and drink providing the perfect place for a brunch, lunch or an afternoon pint and a lively party venue in the evening. Situated opposite the Town Hall lies the imposing listed former Post Office that is now home to an exciting food and drink concept in the form of The Medicine Tap. The interior is seriously impressive and helps the venue wear its many hats as a beer hall, cocktail bar and all day drinking and eating destination. The Medicine Tap is just as comfortable serving coffee and cake as it is serving its simply incredible selection of ales from its 10 metre long bar! There are also over 80 gins from across the globe to choose from plus a comprehensive and exciting cocktail menu. Located on South Parade is the truly stunning former Union Bank of Manchester, now home to Mannerist bar and restaurant. Stepping through the grand double doors diners and drinkers are greeted with an uber cool minimalist décor that seeks to emphasise the grand stature of this listed building. Heavenly Desserts

food & drink Bombay Brew

Vicolo Del Vino

Mannerist’s food offerings are a fusion of Italian / American cuisine where diners can enjoy everything from pizza to chilli beef tacos to mouth-watering steaks. The drink options are equally as impressive and varied with an exciting cocktail menu. Situated on a cobbled lane off The Butts in a former abandoned underground brick cellar Vicolo Del Vino is a beautiful rustic wine bar serving a truly impressive selection of wines and gin. Entering the venue begins your journey to the heart of Italy as you step through the stunning entrance to find a literal wall of wine and gin and a buzzing atmosphere. Vicolo also offers antipasti, tapas, pizzas and larger plates from the grill and this combination of high quality authentic produce and wine has won the hearts of locals and made Vicolo one of Rochdale’s literal hidden gems. Situated around the corner from Vicolo, is a collection of new food and drink venues Pint Pot, Treehouse Bar and Petit Bistro and Bar. Also situated just off The Butts is La Mancha, offering authentic Spanish Tapas and Vino for over 20 years. You could almost be fooled into thinking you were in a Spanish town as you enter the doors of La Mancha and settle in to experience its vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere, providing the finest in Mediterranean tapas and wines.

La Mancha

The former RBS building has recently opened as Hogarths; a grand bar with wide drinks menu including everything from cocktails, rums and gins to cask ales, draught lager and wines. They will show all live major sporting events across multiple screens located around the pub. Another brand new addition to the town centre is the delectable Heavenly Desserts, based at Rochdale Riverside, and providing the very finest in sweet treats. Attention-to-detail, creativity and innovation are at the soul of Heavenly Desserts and combined with their dedication to achieving perfection, they promise to provide all of their customers with an unrivalled dining experience.

Housed inside a historic former cinema the Regal Moon is now one of the jewels in the Wetherspoons groups crown. The screens may have made way for the impressive bar but there are still nods to its past such as the grand piano above the bar and the beautiful art deco stylings. The Regal Moon serves more real ale than any other establishment in the Wetherspoon chain and exemplifies Rochdale’s residents discerning tastes when it comes to craft and real ales. Another Rochdale pub receiving recognition from CAMRA, as most improved pub of 2019, is The Cask and Feather. It boasts a comprehensive and varied selection of cask and keg ales which can be enjoyed in the cosy interior or the charming beer garden.

There is also a real emphasis on craft ale at Bombay Brew with a fantastic range on offer. The marriage between Indian street food and craft ale is one that works perfectly, building an excellent reputation amongst the region’s Asian food lovers.

Cask & Feather

One of the latest innovative additions to the town centre is the fantastic Bombay Brew. Situated at 1 Drake Street, Bombay Brew prides itself on using fresh produce to create mouth-watering Indian street food served in tapas style portions alongside more traditional Asian dishes in a modern and unique environment with the walls adorned with the work of street artist Doodlher.

The newly opened Bean cafe at Rochdale Riverside provides a stylish, comfortable and relaxing environment for you to enjoy lunch, coffee and cake or an informal meeting. The Northwest based company roasts its own coffee at its Liverpool roastery ensuring that its some of the freshest and finest coffee available. Last, but certainly not least, the newly reinvented Baum in Rochdale’s historic Toad Lane always turns heads with it’s enviable beer selection but now boasts a modern British menu and a fantastic new head chef which promise to widen the appeal of this already award winning pub. It also boasts a beautiful walled beer garden. Many of the venues featured are part of the LoyalFree app which has now launched in Rochdale Town Centre to help you save money when you dine, drink or shop. mental wellbeing

WAYS TO PRIORITISE YOUR

MENTAL HEALTH

Lisa Drake, from Rapid Change Hypnotherapy & Coaching Practice in Rochdale, shares eight ways to challenge unhelpful thinking patterns and help improve your mental health and wellbeing during the pandemic... In this edition, I wanted to talk to you about the current pandemic and give you some hints and tips about what you can do during this time of massive uncertainty. As human beings we have a huge need for certainty - we need to know everything’s going to be OK. We need to know we’re going to get paid, have a job, be well, be loved and feel secure etc. However, times like this bring uncertainty and can make us feel as though we no longer have control of our own lives. Feeling like this can then bring about feelings of despair, anxiety or depression. The important thing to remember is that this WILL pass in time. Here are some things I’d like you to consider, that may just help you to face these times with a different mindset and help you to get through it as best you can...

10 | Rochdale Style

1. Understand that although

external circumstances are very different to what we’re used to at the moment, you can decide to stay the same and do everything to be OK in yourself, regardless of what’s happening out there at the moment.

2.

Every day, decide that life is good. Even if you're not going anywhere or perhaps you're working from home, still get up, get dressed, eat well, meditate and hydrate.

3.

If you find yourself with more time on your hands at the moment, use it focus on a new hobby or try to enjoy the slower pace of life. There are plenty of online courses, or how about that book you never got around to reading? Maybe even start a journal and write down your experiences during these challenging times – one day you’ll look back and know that you got through it, as I’m sure you’ve got through many other challenges in life.

mental wellbeing

4. Exercise every single day. Even just a 20 minute

walk per day can really clear the 'brain fog' that some of us have been experiencing, and help you to keep your thoughts positive.

5. Connect with others. If you’re shielding or are having to self isolate, I know this can be very difficult especially if you live alone. We live in an online world now, so it’s actually easier to connect than it’s ever been. Pick up the phone to talk to your loved ones or set up a Zoom call - just seeing someone's face can help you to find that connection that we all crave.

I understand that many people may have lost loved ones, lost their jobs or had to change the way they work and my heart truly goes out to you. Please remember to connect with those around you, talk about it, don’t bottle it up. Now more than ever, I’ve seen that we’re all more than willing to help each other through these times, so please don’t suffer in silence. Reach out, talk, connect – we can get through this together. Lisa Drake

6. For those of you who aren’t self-isolating or shielding, check in with your elderly neighbours before you go shopping, to see if they need anything. Just knowing that you’re helping someone else can give you a purpose and make you feel better about the situation.

7. There's so much news coverage about the pandemic, it's easy to become overwhelmed. If you feel that news is causing you stress, it's important to find a balance. Stay informed but limit news intake if it's bothering you and don't read or watch it just before bed. Rumour and speculation can fuel anxiety, while having access to good quality information can help you to feel more in control.

8. Keep your thoughts positive. We can’t always control what’s happening around us but we can absolutely change the way we respond to it. Use your mind to stay calm which can in turn boost your immune system. Your mind is the one thing you can control, when things around you seem out of control. The next time you find yourself thinking negatively, distract yourself - get up and do something, anything, to take your mind off that negative track. Worrying is not going to solve anything, you probably already know that.

HYPNOTHERAPY & COACHING LISA DRAKE – RAPID TRANSFORMATIONAL THERAPY, NEURO-LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING, TIME LINE THERAPY PRACTITIONER AND LIFE COACH Rapid Transformational Therapy (Marisa Peer Method) is a very powerful technique, which will get to the root cause of your issue, usually in just 1 – 3 sessions. 85% of my clients are free in just 1 session, it really is that powerful! GAIN LIFE CHANGING

QUALIFICATIONS WITH FLEXIBLE LEARNING There’s a brilliant opportunity to upskill and gain valuable qualifications that can improve your job prospects and help you to climb the career ladder at this pivotal time. Best of all, you get to name the time and place as you take up flexible learning options designed to work around your schedule and meet your needs.

There’s a huge degree of autonomy and freedom when doing a course – an aspect that’s particularly attractive to those already in employment or those with busy family lives. The nature of flexible learning has also proven to be so valuable in this post-lockdown world where people might feel it’s safer and more effective upskilling from home depending on the circumstances at the time.

Hopwood Hall College is offering people aged 19+ the chance to complete free* online and part-time courses as it further establishes itself as a hub for e-learning in the community. There’s still time to browse the subjects as enrolment remains open to the public, so now is a great time to choose the option that will open the most doors to you. There are a wide variety of fields to choose from, with the pathways divided between personal and professional development. You can even earn a coveted nationally recognised Level 2 qualification to boost your CV. Just some of the subjects that can enhance your employability include ‘Principles of Business Administration’, ‘Creating a Business Start-Up’ and ‘Digital Skills for Work’. Hopwood Hall College has campuses in Rochdale and Middleton, but the flexible learning options mean that the bulk of your chosen course can be completed at home and on your own timescale. You will still be assigned an assessor and provided with all the materials you need, as well as have contact with a tutor who’ll be on hand to offer additional help and support if required.

Rochdale Campus Julia Heap, Principal and CEO of Hopwood Hall College, said: “Flexible learning is a fantastic way to move one step closer to your dream job and do so on your own terms. “The qualification you earn can be just the thing to improve your career prospects and make you stand out from other candidates in a crowded job market. “I’d like to encourage as many people as possible to choose a course and enrol while there’s still time to take advantage of this amazing opportunity.” For more information and to apply, simply email FlexibleLearning@hopwood. ac.uk. You can find a full list of parttime and flexible learning options by visiting: https:// www.hopwood.ac.uk/parttime-short-courses

ALKRINGTON WOODS

HEALEY STONES

BAITINGS RESERVOIR

M24 4EA Easiest access point- top of Hall Drive (Middleton)

Easiest access points- Road Lane (off Whitworth Rd) or top of Dewhirst Road (Syke)

HX6 4RF Car park just off the A58, near Ripponden

Who knew there is a miniature Stonehenge in Rochdale? Standing not far from Brownhouse Wham Reservoir and Hamer Pasture Reservoir is the Healey Stone Circle. Large boulders to climb on or hide behind (for the kids) and the most stunning view (for you)!

Another one of our favourite reservoir walks, a 1.5 mile circular route on a new pram-friendly, bike-friendly path. There’s often places where you can throw stones into the water, there are benches to stop for snacks and my little boy says that the “bridge” (aka the dam wall) is exciting to walk across!

Alkrington Woods has it all… tall trees to climb, lakes to throw stones in, dens to hide in, bridges to cross, makeshift swings to play on and a lovely looking mansion house to admire! Quite a lot of it is also pram and bike friendly, to make your life a bit easier (although not all of it is). At the minute there is also a dinosaur trail to follow, with 10 dinosaurs to find!

Catherine Aspinall, a local mum of two lively children and an equally energetic pug, shares her top family day out ideas, all with social distancing in mind. With a love for exploring and the outdoors, Catherine and her family are always out and about, having fun adventures in Rochdale & the North West. Follow on Facebook & Instagram @wherewegoingmummy

IRON WATERS

BRIDESTONES

WITHENS CLOUGH RESERVOIR

Easiest access points- the top of Dewhirst Road (Syke) or off Rydings Road (Smallbridge).

OL14 8SA Parking available in a lay-by on Eastwood Road (Todmorden) or in the parking space on Kebs Road (Todmorden) Accessibility for all ages (but not the pram) Distinct lack of visitors so perfect for social distancing

HX7 5TA Small car park at the top of Rudd Lane (Cragg Vale)

If you turn left (east) from the top of Dewhirst Road you will come across the Healey Stone Circle (with a bit of exploring), but if you turn right (west) you can venture down into the cutest of valleys, with a tiny stream to paddle in and acres of greenery to picnic on! If you follow the path along the side of the stream you will find more fields, flowers and forests, and you will eventually come out next to Rydings Dam in Smallbridge (which is somewhere else you can then explore).

14 | Rochdale Style

A fabulous pile of rocks on a moor, perfect for climbing up, scrambling on and hiding between the nooks and crannies. It made the best hide and seek setting for little ones, but older children (or even rock-climbing experts) could have fun here too! Take care on cold or windy days though, as it's very exposed.

Short enough for little legs, ok (although not ideal) for bikes and with the all-important stone throwing opportunities Withens Clough Reservoir is now up there with our favourite walks. Even the drive up to the reservoir is cute, with an old hall, posh house and stream, like something out of Wind in the Willows! There is also a (clearly signposted) route from Withens Clough Reservoir up to Stoodley Pike, which looked significantly less steep than the route we took.

EALEES

GORPLEY CLOUGH

CHEESDEN VALLEY

OL15 0AZ Access via the car park at the Hollingworth Lake visitor centre or at Oak Street/West View in Littleborough. Pram friendly Perfect dog walk Also suitable for two wheels (although, in the words of my son. "It's not a nice smooth path"... you can't please everyone!)

OL14 7HU Small car park on the left hand side of Bacup Road (exiting Walsden), just after the tiny playground and football pitch

OL12 7TY Park in the lay-by opposite the Owd Betts pub (Edenfield Road) One of our recent treks (definitely the correct term) following Cheesden Brook and up to Ashworth Moor Reservoir. None of us knew this place existed, and you would never have known you were just off a main road in Rochdale. If you head away from the car-park with the pub on your right you will come across a break in the wall on the left, with steps leading down. Go down these steps and take the path which forks to the right, following the stream on your left. You will then come across the ruins of Cheesden Lumb Mill, which has old walls to clamber on and also features a waterfall!

If you’ve ever parked at Hollingworth Lake Visitor's Centre you will most likely have then walked up to the lake bank, but if you walk in the other direction (to the back of the car park) you will come to a nice pond and picnic area. If you then follow the path next to the pond you can walk for a mile or so (including with a pram) into Littleborough. Along the way there are multiple places to stop to paddle in the stream and loads of wildlife to spot.

Once you are in the car park there is a stile to your left and one to your right… take the one to your left and then just keep going and going, through lovely woodland and past gorgeous waterfalls. Eventually you will go up some steps to the top of the valley (where there are some signs and a gate), and once through the gate turn right onto the road and walk a short distance until you see a stile on your right. Cross that stile and the path will eventually take you back to the car park. This second leg could be a bit risky for younger children, as there are steep drops to the side at points.

STOODLEY PIKE

SYKE WOODS

HEALEY DELL NATURE RESERVE

Stoodley Pike, OL14 6HJ We parked on Mankinholes Bank, close to the Top Brink pub (OL14 6JB), and from here you will find a signposted path up the hill.

OL12 9TE Easiest access points - Buckley Farm Lane (Smallbridge) or Syke Road (next to the Donkey Pub)

I’ve always wanted to climb up to Stoodley Pike, but it took a lockdown to finally do it. It was quite a steep climb, but little legs did make it, fuelled by chocolate! He was absolutely thrilled when we discovered you can actually go inside the tower and climb a spiral staircase to the viewing platform. The views were absolutely amazing!

Until lockdown I never knew there were woods in Syke but now I think we will visit quite regularly. Not the largest of woods, but a nice one, complete with a large pond for stone throwing and duck feeding. The path within the wood is quite bumpy and steep in parts, so it is probably best to explore on two feet rather than with a pram or a bike.

Dell Road, OL12 6BQ There are multiple access points and corresponding car parking places, including Dell Road, near the Healey Pub, Healey Corner or Massey Croft in Whitworth. Healey Dell features a nice, flat, straight path perfect for prams and bikes (running from the viaduct all the way to the pump track), but it also has numerous “off shoots” to explore, with steps and bridges, and streams and waterfalls! There’s always loads of birds and insects to spot too! After your adventure you could call into The Healey pub, The Oxford pub or Healey Dell Tea Rooms. Rochdale Style | 15

HISTORIC MUSICAL THEATRE SOCIETY LEADS THE WAY WITH MODERN MUSICAL IN 2021 Founded in 1898 as Rochdale Amateur Operatic Society, Rochdale Musical Theatre Company originally performed Light Operettas and then Gilbert & Sullivan. It has a virtually unbroken history of performances since its inception. Having played for many years at the Theatre Royal and then the Hippodrome in Rochdale, the society moved to a temporary home at the ABC cinema before moving to The Gracie Fields Theatre in 1977 and also performing at Heywood Civic centre. In 2015 the society changed its name to Rochdale Musical Theatre Company as, in more modern times, productions have been musical theatre rather than of an operatic nature. The company is steeped in history and family tradition and is now leading the way with forward thinking theatre productions. Their next show is a fabulously fun international award-winning musical based on the adored movie, Legally Blonde The Musical, which starred Reese Witherspoon. It follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes, snobbery, and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. Faced with a decision of cancelling the 2021 show, the committee knew they had to adapt to the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic and lockdown. They decided to hold a virtual get together and hosted virtual auditions. Call backs were socially distanced in chairman, Dan Killeen’s garden (X-Factor style) and a principle cast has been announced.

Leonie Richardson (pictured right) will star as Elle Woods, joined by Zac McIntyre as Emmett Forrest, Steven Cheeseman as Warner Huntington III, Kyanna Cronshaw as Vivienne Kensington, Cesca Astley as Paulette Bonafonte, Terry Banham as Professor Callahan, Maria Markland as Brooke Wyndham, Katie Glover as Margot, Annabelle Taylor as Pilar, Michelle Barker as Kate and Jenya Robinson as Serena. The show is set to be performed at the 4D state of the art immersive theatre at Matthew Moss High School in March 2021. New members are always welcome. Anyone who is interested in both onstage and back stage roles should email their details, introducing themselves and what they would like to do, to: auditions@rochdalemtc.co.uk. THE FASCINATING STORIES BEHIND

ROCHDALE'S MURALS Rochdale town centre is home to a variety of murals, many of which were created as part of last year's Rochdale Uprising mural festival, and a couple of new additions by Rochdale artist, Doodlher. The vibrant murals have brightened up the town centre while also celebrating Rochdale's rich heritage. Here are the fascinating stories behind a few of the murals.

Another mural packed with Rochdale history is artist Tank Petrol's tribute to the women of the cotton weaving industry (pictured below). The huge piece can be seen at the rear of The Wheatsheaf Centre, which back in 1910 was the site of a woollen mill.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Based on a photograph from the 1950s, it shows a woman ironing and mending the cloth, which would have likely just come off the loom.⁣

Let's start with Philth Blake’s giant 'Rochdale' mural (pictured above), on Water Street, which is a difficult one to miss! The mural pays homage to Rochdale’s cotton weaving past. The seven opened cotton bolls were inspired by the iconic Seven Sisters and St Edmunds Church; when the church was built in 1870 it was possible to see seven visible planets with the naked eye over Rochdale. The unopened boll represents the future and a new start. ⁣ ⁣ The colour and style of the piece is influenced by the interior of Rochdale Town Hall. The Latin typography is inspired by the latin inscriptions in the town hall and St Edmunds Church. The Latin inscription ‘Semper Paratus’ on the top of the church translates to ‘Always Ready’, which ties in with Philth’s ‘Numquam Paratus’ meaning ‘Never Ready’. 18 | Rochdale Style

Tasha Whittle’s smiling daisies mural (pictured above) on the side of Rochdale Pioneers Museum pays homage to the daisies used as good luck charms by cotton weavers, who would carve them onto their hand looms. ⁣ ⁣ The use of the daisy would have been symbolic to the early cotton weavers. Initially known as ‘days eyes’ the flowers would open in the day and close at night. It was important for those early cotton weavers who always needed as much light as possible to work. Even their cottages would be built to ensure that as much natural light could filter in through the upper windows.⁣ A 35 metre mural was unveiled at Rochdale’s brand new Reel Cinema Rochdale Riverside in July (pictured below). ⁣ Local artist Victoria Whitaker, known as Doodlher, spent hundreds of hours creating the incredible painting that stretches over two floors.⁣ ⁣ Victoria commented: “It’s been the biggest mural project I’ve ever worked on, and I loved every minute of it. The design is a collage of all the fun stuff at Riverside, mixed in with Rochdale references of course. This is Rochdale’s cinema, so including town centre landmarks was really important to me. Be sure to lookout for all the movie references I’ve included plus another secret cameo from one of my other murals.”⁣

Another of Doodlher's pieces can be found at Bombay Brew, measuring in at two metres tall and almost five metres wide (pictured below). Victoria commented: "I loved every moment of bringing this doodle to life, from researching the history of the IPA beer, creating the ship in a bottle concept to working the details on those giant fingernails.” The design tells the fateful story of the Bombay-bound Crusader vessel that set sail from Liverpool in January 1839, with cargo that included ‘India Ale’, and unwittingly headed into the biggest storm to ever hit the North West coast. The Crusader came to rest on a sandbank spilling the valuable cargo into the sea. Many of the Crusader’s wares were salvaged by customs and sold by auction, including the ale. Some say that the sale of this IPA beer marked the beginning of its popularity on the British beer market. Curtis Hylton’s giant rooster (pictured above) on the back of M&S on Baillie Street, follows the appearance of a huge duck in Blackburn in 2018. ⁣Known for his giant murals incorporating the natural world, Curtis’s work is on the rise as his animal and plant-inspired pieces become ever more popular.

Rochdale's new 'hospitality powerhouse'

built on the spirit of co-operation

Rochdale’s evolving food and drink scene just got a whole lot more exciting, with the recent launch of The Lancashire Hospitality Co-operation, a collection of award winning food and drink venues in Rochdale. Spearheaded by local businessman Ben Boothman, the newly formed Lancashire Hospitality Co-operation encompasses popular local venues such as The Flying Horse Hotel, Bombay Brew and The Baum in Rochdale Town Centre, The Red Lion Inn in Whitworth, the Hare on the Hill in Littleborough and the Crown and Shuttle in Firgrove, into ‘one incredible hospitality powerhouse’. Each of these well loved venues has returned postlockdown with a new brand and a totally new direction.

The company brings together some big local names from the hospitality industry. Ben added: "We’ve managed to assemble an astonishing team drawing from the immense talent within the businesses and recruiting big names from the industry to create a formidable roster of individuals who will help steer the company in a brave new direction". One of the talented individuals at the forefront of the new company is popular local chef Tom McNeeney. After building a name for himself at his family run pub, The Oxford, Tom has joined Lancashire Hospitality Co as Business Development Manager and one of the directors. Within just two months, Tom has already helped to bring huge, positive changes to each venue. Tom commented: "As much as lockdown was a truly awful time for our industry, it gave us a rare opportunity to look at what we really want from our businesses, what we wanted to offer the town and how we could change things we do for the better. No one in this trade has ever had quite so much time to plan, to think, to breathe.

"We’ve used it as an opportunity to completely reinvent some of our venues, The Baum has been reborn as a place where finally the food is as iconic as the Ben commented: "At the start of the year when we carved out our dream of bringing beer selection. To make those changes without lockdown would have taken together all of our incredible venues months, if not years. In Bombay Brew we and future projects under one company had the opportunity to really fine tune we couldn’t imagine the challenges we were about to face as a nation and a trade. the fantastic work we’d already started and come back post lockdown slicker, But they say adversity is preparation for greatness. And greatness is just the start of bolder and better than ever. our ambition. "Keeping fiercely to our Northern roots, we aspire to uphold the traditional values of co-operation between all of our businesses. Individually each of them are exceptional in their field. Together, they are sensational."

dreamy desserts Tom McNeeney, from The Lancashire Hospitality Co, shares his latest cookery masterclass... "Few things on this earth give me as much joy as dessert. I've got an unashamedly sweet tooth and lockdown gave me a chance to make some lovely things at home that I never would normally get the time to, so I thought I'd share a few of them with you and help spread a little edible happiness."

Rum Babas When I think about food that makes me happy it will always be sitting in the window of Katsouri’s on Bury market with my mum, eating rum babas and watching the world go by. Nothing ever comes close. Ingredients: For the babas 125g strong white bread flour 7g sachet fast-action dried yeast 3 medium eggs 15g ginger syrup from a jar of stem ginger in syrup 80g unsalted butter, melted and at room temperature, plus extra For the syrup 300g caster sugar 100g stem ginger, 1 lime (juiced & zested) 600ml dark rum To finish 150ml double cream 50g caster sugar a handful of raspberries (freeze one per cake) 1 passionfruit 26 | Rochdale Style

So first we have to make the babas. Baking can be a bit daunting but this is really straightforward. I start by putting the flour and yeast in a mixing bowl with a large pinch of salt. In another bowl, beat the eggs a little with the ginger syrup, then pour this into the flour, whisking as you go, eventually it’ll form into a smooth mix. Keep going at it for a few minutes, then pour in the melted butter and beat to a smooth batter. Pour the mix into a whatever kind of shaped, greased baking tray you have (I used a muffin tray but a cupcake or fancier one will work too). Cover loosely with cling film and shove them somewhere warm to rise for 45 minutes they’ll double in size, hopefully. Add all the syrup ingredients (apart from the lime zest) into a pan, bring to the boil, then simmer on a lowish heat for about 15 minutes till you have a light syrup. Take it off the heat, add the lime zest and let it cool, then strain into a large bowl.

Whack your oven to 200°C. Pop the babas in the oven and bake for 5 minutes, turn it down to 160°C and cook for 10 minutes - you’re looking for risen and golden. Take them out and let them cool. Carefully help your babas out of the tray and pop them all in the syrup bowl. Give them a shift about every few minutes so they are all good and rummy from every angle, takes about 10 minutes. While they’re soaking, whisk your double cream and caster sugar in a bowl until thick and sweet, smash some raspberries up with the back of a fork and carefully fold through the cream for a sort of raspberry ripple affair. Pop each baba in a bowl, spoon over any extra syrup and top with a spoonful of your raspberry ripple cream, cut the passionfruit in half and scoop some of the seeds on top. Get your frozen raspberries out of the freezer and squeeze them between your fingers until they explode over each baba so you look like you know exactly what you’re doing.

Everyone loves a chocolate tart but white chocolate just makes it so much more special. It’ll work with any berries too if raspberries are hard to come by.

In a microwave safe bowl, heat your chocolate, cream and butter at 20 second intervals giving them a little mix each time until it’s fully melted, pour into your pastry cases, put them all on a baking tray and pop in the fridge for a few hours to set.

Ingredients: 6 small sweet pasty cases about 8cm (just buy them, life’s too short) For the Grenache 50g unsalted butter 350g white chocolate chopped up 120ml double cream To top 3tsp runny honey 1 punnet of raspberries 50g white chocolate (from the freezer) ice cream - I’ve used pistachio but mostly because I thought it would look good on the photos.

Pull them out of the fridge ten minutes before you want to eat them, place your honey in a bowl and very delicately toss your raspberries in it so they are sticky and shiny. Top each tart with 7 or 8 berries, if you put them all top down it’ll really look like you know what you’re doing. Get your white chocolate out of the freezer, lay it on a chopping board and using a sharp knife slice it as thin as you can. Top each tart with a scoop of ice cream and sprinkle with the little chocolate shards. People will probably want to hug you if you feed them these.

Banana & Cinnamon French Toast There's a good chance this will be your new favourite pudding. It’s absolutely not good for you, but then all the best aren’t. Live a little.

Ingredients: 1 loaf brioche For the custard 5 large eggs 125ml double cream 1tsp ground cinnamon 50g caster sugar 1 really ripe banana

For the caramelised bananas 2 tbsp unsalted butter 2 bananas - roughly chopped 2 tbsp caster sugar To finish tiny meringues (I’ve used coconut ones from the new M&S) spoonful of mascarpone

This is far, far too easy to be this delicious. Firstly you want to get a big mixing bowl, add all your custard ingredients and give them a proper mix with a whisk or stick blender. Cut your brioche loaf into thick slices, lay them in a single layer on a baking tray and pour over the custard, flipping after a minute or two. Pop a nonstick pan over a medium heat and lob in a little butter, fry each piece of bread for about 3 minutes on each side, flipping extra carefully so it doesn’t tear. Repeat for every slice and keep warm while you fry your bananas. In a bowl toss your chopped banana with the sugar, rinse out your bread pan and put back on a medium heat, add in another good knob of butter and wait until it’s frothing. Carefully add your sugary bananas to the pan and toss in the hot butter for about 4 minutes. Place the warm french toast on a plate, top with the caramelised banana, a couple of little meringues and a good dollop of mascarpone. Outrageous yes, but very dreamy. Rochdale Style | 27

Business spotlight: Foodservice Equipment Spares Style caught up with Caren Harvey, Director of Foodservice Equipment Spares (FES) in Rochdale, to disocver more about the Rochdale-based business... First of all, where we can find you? We're situated at the end of Chichester Street, The Klondike - not far from the town centre. I wanted to be as close to the centre as I could be as most of the businesses we service are located there; we want to be as easily accessible as possible. Downtime for the foodservice industry means a loss of revenue, the quicker we can get them the parts they need to be back up and running the better!

What sets FES apart from similar companies? Our knowledge and customer service skills. The whole reason I started up on my own is because I didn't want to be part of a faceless brand. At FES we offer a one-to-one service, we get to know our customers personally. Some of my clients have worked with me for decades, because they know I treat their business as personally as I do my own. Caren Harvey (right) & Stacy Taylor from FES

What do you offer? We have over 40 years experience in the commercial catering spares industry, supplying spare parts for commercial kitchens, bars, restaurants, coffee shops, hospitals, canteens and more. We offer next day delivery and our customers have the benefit of over 30 years of product knowledge for all spare parts required for all brands of equipment. We can also help clients with catering equipment sales. Ice-cream machines, kebab grills, refrigeration, coffee machines. You name it, we know about it. Do you trade both online and instore? Yes, we have a new website (foodservicespares.com) where you can buy online and a trade counter where customers can collect.

When did you first start the business? I started FES back in May 2018, although my career in the foodservice industry started way back (30 years ago!) at Electrolux in Royton. Two of the Directors left to start a spares company in Heywood and asked me to join them; I worked there for 27 years before making the leap on my own.

How have you found the last few months in business? These have been worrying times for everyone, but being a new business we were really worried about whether or not we would survive. However, our customer base has been so supportive. The support from Rochdale Council was great too; they gave us great advice and the speed at which the business grant was processed was a huge relief. Thankfully, since the start of the hospitality sector recovery we have seen a steady return of business - although not back to normal, it's heading in the right direction. Why did you decide to launch the business in Rochdale? Having lived in Rochdale for over 30 years it "Rochdale people just felt right. As a business, we feel the same are so friendly and about Rochdale as I do personally. The thing that's kept me here for the last thirty years is the the businesses are just the same" amazing support of the community. Rochdale people are so friendly and the businesses are just the same, just an extension of the people that run them. They want to help each other and are very loyal. I can't imagine being anywhere else. What are your future plans? We're looking forward to working with more fantastic local businesses and supporting the council and Rochdale schools. It's great to see how quickly the local hospitality industry is growing, particularly in Rochdale town centre, and we're excited to be a part of that.

Commercial Catering spare parts. All brands. All equipment.

We know that downtime for your business costs you money. If you're looking to repair anything in your commercial kitchen, we can help you with fast delivery on spare parts for all of the major brands. We also supply commercial coffee machines and their spares.

wildlife

ROCHDALE: A WILDLIFE HAVEN

Though the last few months have not been ideal for us humans, nature has flourished in the quieter times and lesser traffic. Many people began to enjoy the sights and sounds of the natural world close to home with time to slow down and enjoy it. Nature is a wonder tonic that we can all benefit from and there is an abundance of wildlife in Rochdale. We are blessed with some great open spaces such as Hollingworth Lake or Healey Dell whilst also being surrounded by moorland hills and canals to explore. You don’t even need to venture far as, believe it or not, our busy town streets can provide us with many opportunities to ‘bump’ into wildlife. No matter what your level of knowledge or mobility, the ‘trick’ is to keep your eyes open to what is around you. For many years, our Town Hall has been home to Peregrine Falcons. You may see them perched high up on the tower or see them swoop across the Esplanade in search of food (usually an unsuspecting pigeon). Rochdale Council built a nesting area for the birds in 2008 to give them a safe haven to sleep, breed and raise their young. Following the annual competition to 'name the chick' this year's beautiful falcon chicks were named Dino-soar and Beaky Blinder!

Like many of us, Style writer Paul Brady used his spare time during lockdown to explore the great outdoors and discover the glorious countryside and wildlife all around us...

Peregrines aren't the only birds of prey to share our space. Walking through Littleborough, one afternoon, I was surprised to see a Kestrel, with its wonderful russet plumage, hovering intently over a grass verge close to a busy junction. A Sparrowhawk once dived into our front hedge, in Norden, with a great commotion, trying to get the sparrows within it. After a huge flurry of its impressive wings it sat on my car roof, its beady yellow eyes clearly visible as it patiently waited in vain. I was thrilled to see such a magnificent bird and able to admire its speckled, tan coloured plumage only metres away. Small but spectacular, Kingfishers are increasingly seen thanks to our cleaner waterways. Their iridescent azure blue wings are colourful and very noticeable as they fly low over flowing water - a brief glimpse is usually all you can get. I was lucky enough to see one close to Rochdale town centre, on the River Roch. As I waited to see if it would return, its mate appeared from a hole in the river bank and flew after it; to see not one but two was a rare sight indeed. And of course, statue-like herons are always an magnificent sight by the water. During a recent lockdown walk in Norden, I watched a Great Spotted Woodpecker with its vivid red markings pecking at the ground for food. It kept returning to the same spot, clearly undisturbed in the quieter surroundings. The borough, and Healey Dell in particular, is home to a variety of owls. The best time to go looking for them - known as owling - is at dawn or dusk when they are more active. Keep as quiet as you can and don't get too close. Roe deer are frequently seen in our town, close to woodlands and often spotted by early morning dog walkers. I have often seen them skipping across the fields of Norden and Bamford, though one encounter at Watergrove Reservoir stopped us in our tracks, coming across a large male deer stood quietly eating the vegetation in front of us. We stood absolutely still before the deer sauntered away and back into the trees.

wildlife

Warm nights (when we get them) are perfect for bat watching. Small Pipistrelles are commonly seen as they swiftly fly around urban gardens or close to trees and houses. As their habitats have reduced, the many ‘bat boxes’ erected on trees allow them to roost during the day before emerging at dusk to feed off the insects and reduce the number of annoying gnats! After dark, is also a great time to spot hedgehogs, badgers and foxes. One lockdown encounter involved a family of small fox cubs who suddenly appeared from shrubs late one night; closely watched by ‘mum’ their antics were very amusing as they played on the pavement like any pup. A pond is a haven for a plethora of aquatic wildlife. Adult frogs usually spend their day, well hidden, under damp wood or vegetation. Toads differ in appearance flatter and browner but a great sight when occasionally seen.

Water also attracts Damselflies and the larger Dragonflies. They are large attractive insects with huge wings and long tapered bright blue or yellow bodies and never fail to impress when flying around or sunning themselves, resting in the reeds on warm, balmy summer days. When it comes to identifying butterflies I am hopeless but can claim some success as in the summer of 2019 the media told us to expect the arrival from abroad of a great number of Painted Ladies. There were, indeed, so many that even I could identify the orange and white markings with great ease. There's something about butterflies that instantly makes you smile isn't there. You will encounter our great Rochdale wildlife when you are out and about in one of our many parks, out walking on the hills, around waterways or, often, closer to home than you think. Paul Brady

TO LISTEN TO, WATCH AND READ Music from Rochdale Parish Church To enjoy on YouTube The Scott Brothers Duo’s (Jonathan & Tom Scott) 'Saturday Night Spectacular' for Piano and Organ broadcast from Rochdale Parish Church, St Chad’s, with a much-anticipated version of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and great footage of St Chad’s. This video has already had circa 30k views! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bEnrPci2tM

Performances from Rochdale's M6 Youth Theatre Young people from Rochdale’s M6 Youth Theatre were unable to share live performances with their community this year. However, nobody wanted to let all of the hard work go to waste, so they connected online and created four brand new digital productions. The two 8-11 year old groups created music videos to accompany original songs from their shows and the two older groups turned their scripts into radio plays. What’s Bugging You? is a fun music video about the things which bugs and creepy crawlies get up to when humans aren’t looking.

the arts

The young people and their families filmed their own sections from home and created lots of colourful homemade costumes. Planet B is an epic rock-opera style performance that explores climate change and what we can do to help our planet. The group had great fun putting their own spin on the video. Two dramatic radio plays are also available to hear. The Game explores the everyday pressures that young people face and Globe Tech: Your Future is a dark look at a possible version of the future. These productions can be found at www.m6theatre.co.uk

A song from a virtual youth choir Young people from Greater Manchester formed the Manchester Virtual Youth Choir and recorded 'These Days', originally by Rudimental featuring Jess Glynne and Macklemore; a song fittingly about friendship and memories. The Manchester Virtual Youth Choir’s wonderful performance was recorded on phones and tablets by the young people themselves under the direction of local musical director and vocal coach Phil Reynolds and introduced by our very own Sue Devaney. Twenty-eight young people took part aged 7-23 years old, with live drums recorded by 13-year-old Scott Heap and an original rap to thank our NHS created by Emily Moran and Lily Kenny.

Phil Reynolds commented: "Just over a month into the lockdown I decided to try and find a way to bring as many of my vocal students together as possible to give them a focus at a difficult and stressful time... For some time, I've been asked to create a youth choir, and just haven't had the time or venue to do it. But I've often wondered how it would sound if I put all my students together in a room and gave them harmonies to sing. [The video] is an attempt to turn a negative into a positive by seizing the opportunity to do exactly that - but obviously in a virtual setting. In my opinion the results are extraordinary - I knew it would be good, but I genuinely had no idea it would sound like this. Dedicated to everyone struggling with anxiety, depression and mental health issues and with a thank you to our tireless NHS staff and all the keyworkers who have kept us going throughout." To watch the video just search 'Manchester Virtual Youth Choir' on YouTube.

A short film from local young people Parvez Qadir’s ‘My week in lockdown' is a powerful short film with five local young people documenting their life for a week under quarantine. An excellent creative response from young people who are dealing with the pressures of self-isolation to express themselves, under Parvez’s direction they became the film makers of their story. The film reveals the highs and lows of navigating a difficult time in their lives. Rochdale business owner praises local community While the pandemic has proven to be a difficult situation for local retailers, many businesses have found that when faced with no other choice, they can adapt quickly and think up new ways to continue trading.

that’s been supporting us. People have been popping in for a catch up and buying a few new bits. It’s still awkward as most people are rightly being cautious about socialising and therefore don’t have that need for a new shirt but the support we’ve had has been fantastic."

Despite the positive mood, safety measures are still top priority in-store to ensure customers can shop with confidence. culture

Campaign to bring 'canal culture' to Rochdale The main Rochdale Canal stretches from the Castlefield basin in central Manchester to Sowerby Bridge in West Yorkshire. It is 32 miles long and has 91 locks. The waterway flows through the whole borough of Rochdale. After decades of dereliction, the canal was finally reopened fully in July 2002. The restoration, supported by local councils and English Partnerships, had taken many years to happen. Tireless campaigning over many years was led by the Rochdale Canal Society. The vast amounts of money spent on the canal restoration was expected to lead to a rise in tourism. However, one rarely sees a boat venture beyond Littleborough and pass through the borough. The major problem is the lack of facilities for boaters between Rochdale and Manchester. Occasionally, one sees boats moored near Littleborough Station and at Slattocks, but rarely anywhere else. I was told by a waterways employee that during a year, on average, less than one boat a day travels on the canal between Littleborough and Manchester.

There may be a solution! The derelict Rochdale Branch Canal led off from the main waterway at Oldham Road bridge, near Lock 50. It turned north at this point and flowed under Durham Street bridge, heading under the Grade 2 listed Halfpenny Bridge and under the railway line. There were wharves at what is now the Central Retail Park, currently occupied by Halfords, Argos, Matalan and Poundstretcher. At present, the branch is only in water up to Durham Street and acts as a turning circle for boats. The rest of it is either dry or built upon. The Rochdale Branch Canal Facebook group have a solution which they say could be a "once in a lifetime opportunity to create regenerative opportunities". They want to see this abandoned waterway restored to include a marina, shops and cafes and mooring spots for residential boats. Co-ordinating the campaign to restore the branch canal and create a basin is Walsden resident Steven Parker. Steven's ideas are fascinating and his enthusiasm is infectious. He is no newcomer to canal preservation, having set up the Manchester, Bolton & Bury Canal Society when he was just seventeen years old.

Style readers will have to have an excellent memory to recall the Rochdale Canal before full restoration. One forgets the many shallowed sections, culverts and lowered bridges between Manchester and Littleborough. There were other obstacles: the M62, the Sandbrook Park roundabout and even a supermarket in Failsworth. The full restoration, whatever anyone says, is a magnificent achievement. Despite its name, the Rochdale Canal remains elusive to many of the borough's residents. The canal flows through the centre of Castleton, Smithy Bridge and Littleborough and is conveniently close to their railway stations, pubs, eateries and shops. However, elsewhere, the canal has little interface with Rochdale itself. It is hidden behind mills and industrial premises and sneaks under bridges on Oldham Road, Kingsway and Milnrow Road. There is no “canal culture” in Rochdale in the way that there is in Todmorden, Hebden Bridge and Sowerby Bridge which are all along the same waterway. (Below: Map of Rochdale Branch Canal)

(Above: Start of Rochdale Branch Canal with Durham Street Canal Bridge in the distance)

Steven Parker's suggestions for the branch canal's restoration are ambitious. Reopening a half-mile long branch canal would cost millions of pounds. But imagine the effect that such a waterway would have. The exciting proposal would create jobs, improve the environment, boost regenerative opportunities and make Rochdale a waterside destination for visiting canal boats, providing lasting benefits to Rochdale and its community. In order to convince myself about the project, I visited the area both on foot and by car. I walked over the historic Halfpenny Bridge which joins Oldham Road to Richard Street. The area around the bridge is overgrown, neglected and not very welcoming. However, it is close to the railway station, Metrolink stop and the excellent Greater Manchester Fire Station Museum. The place is crying out for regeneration and activity. There are many physical, financial and political obstacles to this proposed scheme. However, the full restoration of the Rochdale Canal was a much bigger project and eventually happened. Nothing is impossible. What can Style readers do? Join the Rochdale Branch Canal Facebook group page and join in the discussion. Consider writing to your local councillors and MP if you feel strongly about the topic. Sign the petition at: www.change.org/p/rochdalemetropolitan-borough-council-save-the-rochdale-branch-canal. Use the local canal more, observing, of course, social distancing rules. Above all, appreciate the extraordinary effort that was required to first build our canal over two centuries ago – and, of course, to reopen it! Richard Lysons

Mayor thanks dedicated Rochdale care workers The Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Billy Sheerin, recently joined a Zoom call with the team at Bluebird Care Rochdale to celebrate their second birthday. The Mayor congratulated them on being ranked first out of over 200 Bluebird Care franchises in a national staff satisfaction survey and presented staff with gift vouchers from local businesses. The vouchers had been bought by Joint Director, John Keogh, as a way of thanking his dedicated team while also supporting local businesses who have had a challenging few months. The company has also achieved the number one spot on caresite homecare.co.uk, out of 60 registered providers across Rochdale and the borough. They narrowly missed out on a coveted Top 20 award across the whole of the Northwest, ranking 24th out of 963 registered providers. Wayne Smith, Managing Director and Finance Director of Bluebird Care UK said: “Bluebird Care Rochdale have shown incredible determination throughout the coronavirus pandemic. We know they have worked harder than ever before and have faced numerous challenges to ensure that their customers were cared for to the same exceptional standards as always. In addition to the pressures faced by the social care sector during the outbreak, we know many have faced their own personal struggles, whether this has

been managing childcare arrangements, ill-health of themselves or of family and loved ones, financial pressures or anxiety around the new ways of living and working that we all now abide by. I am delighted that we have been able to find a way to thank John and his team for the sacrifices they have made and dedication they have shown to continue to deliver the very best care to their customers.” John Keogh, Joint Owner of Bluebird Care Rochdale said: “It was delightful to be recognised by our team for the way we support them. We have no business without our amazing people who, throughout the challenge that Covid-19 has brought, have been unwavering in their support to our customers. My aim when we started was to ensure that we care for our team and this hopefully shows we are getting things right, although we won’t rest on our laurels.”

Beauty on lockdown: ways to support your local salon Looking on the brightside, lockdown life can actually have a positive effect on our beauty regime. From untamed brows to naked nails these can actually be a blessing in disguise. Did you know that the fuller more out of shape your brows, the better your final brow shape will be. In order to create, shape and lift in the brow we like to work with as much hair as possible. Especially for brow lamination, we need the hairs to be as long as possible, so put down the tweezers and scissors and embrace the growth! With eye treatments due to resume soon, you’ve not too much longer to wait for those perfect brows. If you just can’t wait, there's still lots your salon can offer. Why not purchase some brow products and ask your salon to send you a video on how to use the products? The products that I would recommend for home use would be HD Brows Brow Tec, for defining the brows and adding additional hair strokes, then HD Brows Colour Fix, which adds colour, volume and thickness to the brow hairs and helps to hold the hairs in shape. As a substitute for brow lamination, why not try HD Brows newest breakthrough product, brow glue. This product is perfect for clients looking to achieve the brushed up, fluffy look or tame unruly hairs that won’t stay in place. Current government restrictions (at time of print) mean that some other treatments have been restricted such as lashes and facials, so why not arrange a delivery from your local salon of all your essentials and favourites such a facial in a box, manicure in a box, your favourite skin care, nail care, make up or lashes brought to your door? This not only provides a muchneeded pamper but also helps your local salon who rely on your support. For your nails, you can use oils, creams and nail strengtheners to keep your nail plate and cuticle area hydrated and healthy. If you’ve bitten off your nails in lockdown why not book in for a manicure or a home delivery of a manicure in a box which includes professional Mavala products and tools to complete your own manicure at home from £15. Here at The Retreat we are up and running however we are aware that some clients may be shielding or apprehensive, so we're offering FREE virtual consultations for skincare, lashes, brow products, make up and nails on Facebook, Instagram, via email emma@theretreat.me or over the phone 01706 868 898, where we can advise you on what treatments suit you best and these can then be purchased and delivered contactless to your door. ROCHDALE'S GOT TALENT 2020 Talented 11-year-old dancer, Xela Mills, was crowned the winner of virtual talent competition Rochdale's Got Talent 2020 and received a ÂŁ1000 gift voucher from Rochdale's favourite singing jeweller, John Alexander. The contest was a huge success, with hundreds of local people showcasing their talents during lockdown, while raising an incredible ÂŁ8315 for Springhill Hospice. Xela received over 2000 votes after she wowed the public with her dancing skills, with dancers Alana and Estelle coming second with 1608 votes, and opera singer Beth in third place, just seven votes behind.

Man of Rochdale Paul Ellison, who organised the event along with Sam Kutereba-Wall said: "Huge congratulations to Xela; she is very talented and will go far in the future. We can't wait to see where her talents take her." "I'm thrilled we've raised so much for the hospice, as they've had a real hit with their major fundraising events being cancelled. Springhill is a place close to many of us, and I am pleased we could help support them at such an imperative time".

"We would like to give a huge thank you to everyone who supported and donated to our event this year... Also a big thank you to all our team, who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes. It's been a massive success, enjoyed by many, and here at RGT HQ, we are looking forward to seeing you all next year, for Rochdale's Got Talent 2021!". Well done to all the contestants and everyone who worked hard to make the competition a success.

Alana and Estelle received vouchers from Platos Y Bebidas, The Baum and Face Medical Clinic, while Beth received entrance into Carol Godby's Theatre Workshop and the opportunity to feature as a background artist on a professional TV set. Rochdale Style | 49

SPRINGHILL HOSPICE NEWS & EVENTS HOSPICE LAUNCH VIRTUAL EVENT TO CHALLENGE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND RAISE VITAL FUNDS

CYCLING ENTHUSIAST TAKES ON 'EVERESTING' CHALLENGE

Sofa to Summit invites supporters to take on their own challenge, in their own way, to raise money for the Hospice.

Local cyclist, Daniel Taylor recently took on the Everesting challenge and raised over £3,000 for Springhill.

This can be anything from swimming 100 lengths at the local pool to walking the length of your favourite mountain trek on the streets of Rochdale or from your back garden. The challenge allows you to choose the activity to suit you, all while raising money for the much loved local Hospice.

Everesting has been described as ‘the most difficult climbing challenge in the world’. Those taking on this ‘brutally hard, yet fiendishly simple’ challenge pick the hill of their choice and complete repeats of it until they have climbed 8,848 metres, the height of Mount Everest.

Barbara Lloyd, Community Support Fundraiser at Springhill Hospice said:

Daniel’s bike ride took place in one day over Blackstone Edge, near Littleborough.

"The Sofa to Summit virtual challenge is a great way to push and challenge yourself whilst staying safe and following Government guidance. It can provide a welcome change to the daily routine and a chance to ‘move more’ after all these weeks in lockdown."

Trainee doctor Daniel, from Rochdale, is a former volunteer at Springhill Hospice. He said, “I attempted this challenge last year and after 17 hours of riding had to stop as my knees couldn’t take the strain. But I refused to give in this time and with the added motivation of raising money for such a worthwhile cause, I was determined to succeed.”

Barbara added: “With the number of events cancelled this year due to the outbreak of Coronavirus, it also offers a fun and innovative way to help raise vital funds for the Hospice that everyone of all ages can enjoy. It would be lovely to have as many people as possible taking part.” 18/11/2016 11:10 If you would like to take6894-WIN-STYLE-2016FIN.qxp_Aut-2013 part in the challenge and help raise vital funds for the Hospice to continue giving care to its patients and their families, visit: springhill.org.uk/sofa-to-summit email fundraising@springhill.org.uk or call 01706 641790 for more information.

He went on, “Springhill Hospice is a cause particularly close to my heart... I volunteered at the Hospice for over a year and in my current role as a medical student, I have gained further insight into the valuable services hospices provide. They rely on public donations and in the wake of Covid-19, this support is needed more than ever.”

ALLEYWAYS IN BLOOM The winners of the annual ‘Alleyways in Bloom’ competition have been announced. The competition asked Rochdale residents to work together with neighbours to improve their alleyway and enhance their neighbourhood. First prize was awarded to residents of Shaftesbury Avenue in Smithy Bridge, who were chosen for the third year running. Richard Simpson, of Shaftesbury Avenue, said: “Residents are thrilled to have won the competition again after making improvements to

the alley and keeping up with maintenance. The alleygates add to making the residents feel safe and secure and has given us all something positive to focus on during lockdown. All the residents have made a superb effort and has allowed a safe space to come together and enjoy a glass of wine in the evening.” The runner-up prize went to residents of Edenfield Road in Norden. Residents Bernice Clark and Sue Thomas, who have won the competition previously, have been maintaining and enhancing their alleyway for many years. Bernice, said: “Sue and I, along with other residents have spent a lot of time over the last few months enjoying the space and have grown our own plants this year, including a beautiful fuchsia basket and sweet peas. Spending time here has proven very therapeutic over the years and we get a lot of positive comments from people passing on the street.” The alleygating scheme is run by Rochdale Borough Council and aims to reduce the opportunity for burglary, antisocial behaviour, malicious fires and fly-tipping by installing lockable steel gates at both ends of back alleyways. There are currently 679 schemes across the borough and there is funding available for new schemes to be installed. For more information about the alleygating scheme and to apply visit www.rochdale.gov.uk/alleygating.

AIMAN'S MITO MISSION Twelve-year-old Aiman and his family, from Rochdale, are on a mission to raise awareness of Mitochondrial Disease (Mito), following Aiman’s diagnosis five years ago.⁣⁣

⁣⁣ Mito, which has no known treatment or cure, is currently being highlighted in a Coronation Street storyline and often described as “living life on a low battery that can’t be charged”. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Mum Sabrina explained: “It's a genetic condition which affects energy production and has many variations. Aiman becomes tired very quickly and if he exerts himself in any way he can become very poorly. Aiman’s body gives him many limitations but we’re determined to give him the best possible life we can. Aiman struggles at times and becomes frustrated but is such a friendly, happy, kind and caring boy who is loved by everyone. This is a progressive disease, but we’re determined to remain positive and pass positive vibes to Aiman”.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week runs 13th-19th September 2020. You can help raise awareness by following and sharing on social @aimans_mito_mission. Aiman also has a JustGiving page raising funds for My Mito Mission which goes towards research and support projects.⁣⁣ Visit: www.mymitomission.uk/aimansmitomission

WHITWORTH'S RAY OF SUNSHINE Five-year-old Leo Poulter, from Whitworth, spent lockdown spreading joy in his local community. ⁣⁣After breaking his arm in May, the team at Rochdale Infirmary made him a special rainbow cast because they loved his optimism and bravery. ⁣⁣ Leo, who is registered blind, couldn’t continue to learn Braille or take part in his online dance lessons at Samba Dance so he took up a more sedate hobby while his arm healed - planting sunflowers. Mum, Sam Poulter, commented: “Leo wanted to give the sunflowers as presents to make people smile, so with social distancing in mind, we put them on the wall outside our house and advertised them as free. He got such amazing feedback and within a couple of hours they were all gone!”.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ After seeing how happy it made people, Leo spent the next few weeks planting a variety of plants and flowers for his community, including cornflowers and pansies.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The inspirational youngster also chalked a rainbow hopscotch and obstacle course outside his house. Sam added: “He spent most of his day watching people through the window and it made him laugh so much”.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ After having his cast removed, Leo is now excited to be back dancing, while still growing plants for his neighbourhood.
