Dear Readers, We're so happy to be back publishing after what has been a difficult start to 2021 for most local businesses... but, things are definitely looking up and we'll prove it! Every single page of this edition is filled with positive news about our town and its wonderful people. It's definitely our happiest edition yet.

We're excited to have exclusive interviews with Coronation Street's Sue Devaney who features on our cover. She tells us all about life back on the cobbles, her glam businesswoman alter-ego and why she's passionate about raising awareness of mental health and homelessness issues.

SUE DEVANEY

Talented Rochdale actress, Sue Devaney, returned to Coronation Street in 2019, as Kevin Webster's sister, Debbie, after a 34 year absence. The popular actress has since made her comeback permanent and is set to remain on the cobbles until at least April 2022.

Sue is well known for her numerous television and theatre roles including Rita Briggs in the 1980s children's TV drama Jonny Briggs, paramedic Liz Harker in Casualty, Jane in the Victoria Wood comedy, Dinnerladies and more recently a nationwide tour of Calendar Girls and worldwide tour of Mamma Mia. Style caught up with with Sue to discuss life back on the cobbles, her glam businesswoman alterego and why she's passionate about raising awareness of mental health and homelessness issues...

exclusive How would you describe Debbie?

Sassy... a northern version of Joan Collins!

Debbie loves herself; she thinks she’s great.

It’s quite empowering to play someone like that. I’ve based Debbie Webster’s fashion on a friend of mine, Maureen Astley (pictured below). I’ve known Maureen ever since she taught me tap dancing when I was seven, at Syke Junior Theatre Club. I aspire to be like her because she’s always positive, very glamorous, with her matching bags and scarves and false eyelashes.

Once this current lockdown is over, Maureen’s said I can go over and raid her wardrobe so I can’t wait for that!

Earlier this year it was revealed that Debbie had been scheming with Ray Crosby to have Coronation Street bulldozed. She seems to have seen the error of her ways since then, but does Debbie still have a dark side?

Well, there’s good and bad in everybody isn’t there. I think she’s had quite a few bad experiences in relationships and has had to harden over the years, like I suppose we all do at times. All she’s known is how to make money. But I think when she came home and saw her brother she thought, these are my kind of people. And you know, she’s a woman of a certain age, she’s questioning life, wondering where she’ll be happy and realising she wants to be around her family.

And also - was she being bad? Because I think what Debbie does is chuck her money at everything. She’s a fixer - she thought, let’s knock down Coronation Street, build beautiful luxury apartments and I’ll put my brother [Kevin Webster: Mike Le Vell] in one of them and he’ll live happily ever after.

And it’s not until he says, “no I love this life, with my bacon butties, my garage and my mates” that she realises she's wrong.

You talk about Debbie as though she’s your best friend - is that how it feels?

I played her when I was 16 so I know her journey. She’s come from nowt as a child to being a successful middle aged high flying woman. I think I talk about her so enthusiastically because I love the fact that she’s a lot of things I’m not – she’s a businesswoman, she’s full of confidence.

And probably, people look at me and think “Wow… Sue’s really confident!” but I’m not.

Debbie thinks differently; she doesn’t think like me. She thinks in business, facts and money and not feelings. It’s wonderful to play her. She’s funny, witty, clever; I just love dressing up in those high heels. I feel like I’m going into work to dress up. I send a picture of me as Debbie to my partner, Jim, so he knows I can scrub up quite well when I’ve been in my onesie all week!

Any spoilers as to what’s coming up for Debbie? Is love on the horizon?

I hope there is but she’s got very high standards. She’s been hurt a lot in the past so it’d have to be a pretty special guy.

You never really know what’s coming up.

You get the scripts a couple of weeks before and that’s when you know what’s happening storyline wise. And the scripts come fast and furious. If you’re in a block you could get up to 20 scripts so it’s busy. It’s nice to have weekends off though, which is a first for me.

I haven’t had weekends off for a long, long time. Oh and it’s quite nice to come home, do my washing and peg out!

Back in February, Debbie and Kevin were trapped in the Bistro fridge by Ray – what were those scenes like to film and how long did they take?

Three days! They built a set especially for it. Mike does the best cold acting ever; his lip quivers and everything. Whereas I was having hot sweats with all the layers…. and the menopause of course!

We had a covid test so that we could get close during the fridge scenes. Mike and I had worked together for months but couldn’t go anywhere near each other; so as soon as we had the test… we were like…

“Come here! Let’s have a big old hug!”

It’s been absolutely brilliant to work with Mike again because we’ve got a history.

When we first started working together he was 18 and I was 16! Who’d have thought all those years ago that we’d be stuck in a fridge together in our fifties!

What has it been like on set with Covid restrictions?

It's a very tight ship at the minute. You do your lateral flow tests, wear your mask right up until you do your take in the scene and all the crew are wearing masks all day.

They do an amazing job. We have to do all our own make up and hair ourselves, supervised by our wonderful makeup department. The first day when I got there I thought “Oh my gosh, I’ve made it! I’ve got my own makeup brushes with my name on!” Then I realised they put your name on them because they have to clean them due to Covid!

Everything is stripped back on set. We’re acting two metres away from each other, so it’s tricky in that sense.

I count my blessings every day though. So many of my mates are struggling financially; freelancers not knowing where their next pay cheque will come from.

I feel for our industry and our local theatres, like The Oldham Coliseum and Bolton Octagon. Samuel West was chatting on the radio the other day. He had this brilliant idea to save the repertory theatres - employ well known established actors…. Maxine Peake for example, I think she’s from Bolton. try and entice them to work back home.

Ask them what play they’d like to do at their local theatre. They would be on a repertory wage, same as all the other actors but it would encourage audiences to come back and watch live theatre.

You’ve signed a new contract until April 2022 – have you settled into life as a Coronation Street regular now?

I’m still finding my feet but I absolutely love it. I love working somewhere where you see the same people everyday – security, wardrobe, make up, crew. (continued...)

I’ve been nipping in and out of tv roles for a while, an episode here and there, and I was always terribly nervous because I didn’t have time to relax. But a soap is a whole new way of working and I’m loving having the time to improve.

We loved your recent appearance on ITV's Lorraine, especially when you sang Dancing Queen in Korean!

Oh you have it to do don’t you!! That was hysterical because I’m not very technical and the interview was on Zoom - when Lorraine was speaking everything was frozen so the whole time all I could see was Andi Peters on a boat somewhere. Then the window cleaner knocks on the window “you owe me a fiver!”, Alexa’s coming on and off, my neighbour’s dogs started howling! It was like a sitcom.

You've used your profile to speak out about lots of important issues; one of the main ones being homelessness...

I'm passionate about helping homeless people because I know what it's like to have no money or no job. I've experienced mental health issues, low self esteem, addiction. People judge homeless folk but they don’t know their story.

I’ve interviewed so many homeless people and it’s only then that you realise that any of us could end up in the same situation. There but for the grace of God. This country now has a massive issue and Manchester is one of the worst hit areas. I find it heartbreaking that, in this day and age, we can have thousands of people living on our streets.

Everyone deserves help, food and warmth.

You’ve always talked openly about your struggles with anxiety and addiction...

Well, I have an addictive nature and I struggled for many years with food. I don’t eat sugar or gluten now and I haven’t had any alcohol since 2009.

I talk about it because there was a time I used to make it a monster and I thought I was alone with it but actually when you say it out loud, it loses its power. And if I can help anybody who is struggling with the same problems I have had then I will share my journey openly.

I remember doing a job at Oldham Coliseum and there were four of us sharing a dressing room. It was the opening night and I said “I just need to do my deep breathing because I can feel my anxiety rising”. The lady next to me said “I’ve got that” and it turned out all four of us in that dressing room struggled with anxiety.

When you start talking about it you realise it’s very common and it makes us human.

Scratch the surface of everyone’s life and there’s a lot more going on. We need to be kind to each other. Ask the people around you, “how are you... in yourself?” - that’s a very northern expression!

What advice would you give to anyone struggling with their mental health?

It’s ok to not be ok. Ask for help. You are not alone. Covid has allowed us to open up more about mental health as so many people have struggled throughout these lockdowns. I have friends who are really successful actors who struggle with their mental health. My anxiety went through the roof with my menopause and I found myself unable to work for a while. Now I am learning not to be so hard on myself. I’m a work in progress.

Have you always lived around Rochdale?

No, I left home at 17 and moved to London.

My sister was already down there and we lived with a wonderful actress called Patricia Hayes. I lived in Bristol for a while too and then moved back home when I was 30.

I love working away and experiencing different countries and cultures but it’s always nice to come back home. My family are in Rochdale now, although my niece, Grace, is a makeup artist and is currently filming in Bristol. I'm very proud of her.

I remember getting Corrie the first time around when I was 16. I walked out of the audition, got the train and the bus back to Syke; by the time I’d got home, my mum was on the doorstep... “You’ve had a phone call, you’ve got it!” Oh the heady days of landlines!

What’s the best thing about the town?

There’s some beautiful, stunning places in Rochdale. I love the old buildings. The Town Hall is spectacular! And it’s something about the people I think - I love the way we look after one another and we don’t like to see anybody struggle. And northerners can laugh at themselves.

I’ve been all around the world and I still talk like this! Whereas Debbie has the phone voice – the Hyacinth Bucket voice. But then of course, if she’s angry she’ll go really northern and say “oh blummin ‘eck!”.

Do you have to stick to the Corrie scripts word for word or can you add your own sayings? You should definitely use ‘cruckle’!

We mostly stick to the script but sometimes I’ll say “how about adding this?”.

Cruckle!! Oh yes, I’m going to have to find a way to say that “oh I’ve cruckled on’t cobbles in mi big heels!”.

You seem really happy to be back on the cobbles?

Oh I’m so happy. It’s great to be back on Coronation Street. It’s like I’ve come full circle. I drive to work and back everyday with a big smile on my face. I wish my Mum and Dad could see me now…. with my name on my makeup brushes!

WELCOME BACK TO ROCHDALE TOWN CENTRE Rochdale Town Centre is looking better than ever as it welcomes back locals and visitors from further afield. With its stunning arcitecture, amazing street art, wide variety of shopping outlets, independent stores and burgeoning food and drink scene, Rochdale is well and truly back in business.

Expect a few changes if you've not ventured out for a while - new businesses continue to open and the Baillie Street Quarter has been given a unique brand by Rochdale BID as the area grows into its function as the key link between Yorkshire Street and Rochdale Riverside. Bull Brow is also undergoing a makeover by Rochdale Borough Council and the floral displays are in bloom!

The BID Rangers are on hand to deep clean pavements, doorways and street furniture to keep the town looking its best, as well as being a visible point of contact for visitors.

Paul Ambrose, Business Improvement District Manager, encouraged people to venture into the town centre: "Throughout the pandemic we have seen the town centre community come together to support one another and our amazing town centre businesses have demonstrated their importance. If we want to continue to enjoy the unique products and services that local businesses provide now is the time to support them.

Shopping, eating and drinking local will play a key role in the economic recovery in the months ahead."

Fabulous independent stores have re-opened their doors such as Buckley Menswear, Number Ten Gift Shop, ToysARoo, End Boutique, Chantilly and Okeechobee as well as large retail chains including River Island, New Look, M&S and H&M. The town centre's outdoor hospitality has proved incredibly popular over the past month with its beautiful outdoor spaces and beer gardens being transformed and extended.

Packer Street has been transformed into a pedestrianised continental-style outdoor dining area, named Gracie’s Garden, serving customers of The Flying Horse Hotel, The Empire, Yate’s and KoKo’s.

Just across the road, The Medicine Tap has launched its mouthwatering 'Dining on The Esplanade' menu with marquees providing cover from the unpredictable weather.

The outdoor terrace at Bean Cafe at Rochdale Riverside is also a firm favourite with visitors, providing a stylish, relaxing environment in which to enjoy lunch, fresh coffee and cake.

The Baum in Rochdale’s historic Toad Lane always turns heads with it’s enviable beer selection but now boasts a modern British menu and newly transformed walled beer garden, beautifully lit with festoon lights.

The town centre's food and drink offer has gone from strength to strength recently and you'll now find an array of restaurants, coffee shops, pubs and bars to suit every occasion, taste and budget.

The most recent newcomer is Austrailia's leading gourmet pizza brand Crust, set to open at Rochdale Riverside with an all-year-round heated outdoor terrace.

Indoor hospitality is set to open imminently (and should have if you're reading this after 17th May), including the ever-popular Petit Bistro in the Baillie Street Quarter and Treehouse bar, above Petit Cafe and Okeechobee.

The Cask and Feather, on Oldham Road at the top of Drake Street, boasts a comprehensive and varied selection of cask and keg ales which can be enjoyed in the cosy interior or the charming beer garden.

Also in the Baillie Street Quarter is hidden gem, Vicolo Del Vino, a beautiful rustic wine bar combining real traditional Italian food with an array of specialist wine, beer and gin from around the world. There's also outdoor seating on a quaint cobbled street and live music four nights a week.

Other fantastic venues for lunch with friends, coffee and cake or an informal meeting include Pudding Paradise, Cafe Grand Abaco, Russells Cafe, M&S Cafe, Costa (within Next).

Situated above Vicolo Del Vino, quirky micro pub The Pint Pot offers rotating cask ales, a fantastic range of bottled beers, wines and a light lunch and nibbles menu.

Just around the corner is La Mancha, offering authentic Spanish Tapas in a relaxed atmosphere.

Located on South Parade in the former Union Bank of Manchester, is the impressive Mannerist bar and restaurant, offering an exciting cocktail menu and a fusion of Italian and American cuisine where diners can enjoy everything from pizza to chilli beef tacos to mouth-watering steaks.

The former RBS building is now Hogarths; a grand bar with wide drinks menu including everything from cocktails, rums and gins to cask ales, draught lager and wines, showing all live major sporting event.

HOPWOOD PARK Small car park on Baker Street, OL10 2PP There is a 'baby' playground with the basics... swing, slide, roundabout, rockers and an older area with - wait for it - A ZIPLINE!!

There's also the brand spanking new pump track which, although small, is great fun!

The perimeter of the park is a lovely, flat, smooth path - perfect for scooters, bikes or dolls prams.

We parked in the small car park close to Hopwood Hall College, Middleton (M24 6XH).

The woods are bigger than you'd expect from the road and we spent over two hours exploring - through streams, over bridges, onto tree stumps, along logs... fun was had by all.

We parked on Clough Road and just wandered around, befriending ponies, throwing stones in the stream, climbing trees and feeding the ducks. There's also a miniature sculpture trail featuring a grasshopper, a giant fish and a fox!

There is a pay and display car park at the cricket club (OL15 9LD) or often spaces on the streets surrounding the park.

Canal Wharf, Canal Street, Littleborough, OL15 0HA.

The playground is good with bits for toddlers and older children - a little play house, a slide down a hill and a spinning seesaw. The playground is actually in the park next door Moorlands Park - but you wouldn’t really notice that they are different parks.

One of our favourite things about this park is the excellent pump track.

There's also a lovely little cafe, a duck pond and a little stream which trickles downhill from there, where, along the banks, are dotted fairy houses, fairy shops and even a fairy water mill!

A great park whatever the season, with a beautiful view from the swings.

There is an excellent toddler playground at the top of the park, with little slides and baby swings and a fake road. There is also an area for bigger kids at the bottom of the park, which includes skateboarding ramps.

The paths are lovely and smooth for prams and bikes with flat sections, little winding paths and also one big hill. There's an old water wheel to find and an excellent cafe, Cuppacinos.

Obviously not a day out in itself... but any walk along the Rochdale Canal is made better by a stop off at Yankee Heaven for an ice cream or milkshake. My favourite is a salted caramel ice cream in a waffle cone. They also have ice cream especially for doggies!

And, as well as feeding ourselves, we like to feed the ducks.

Ideally placed for a stroll along the Rochdale Canal - 1.5 miles towards Todmorden will get you to Summit and 1.5 miles towards Rochdale will get you to Clegg Hall.

TANDLE HILL COUNTRY PARK Royton, Oldham, OL2 5UX I honestly don’t know how Tandle Hills has not made it to this feature before as we have been numerous times and it’s really good fun!

There is the trek to the top of the world, countless trees to climb, sticks a-plenty, a little stream and - the piece de resistance - a massive slide down the hillside!

I just love the magnificent views of Rochdale, Manchester and Oldham and the woods really are impressive (in all seasons).

There's some nice smooth paths for prams and bikes but also some rough terrain.

The play areas aren’t particularly big but they are fun, with wobbly bridges, sand pits with diggers, swings and slides.

An ice cream from the cafe is always a winner!

QUEEN'S PARK Small free car park on Queens Park Road, OL10 4UY The playground has now been done up in a regal theme, complete with castle turrets and a horse and carriage rocker. There is also a very bouncy trampoline in the floor. There's a smaller toddler playground with a fire engine in a sandpit and within the park there is also gym equipment.

Most of the paths are lovely and smooth for biking and scooting️ and around the back of the lake there is a BMX pump track.

There is also a lovely cafe and a large, beautiful lake with lots of geese, ducks and swans.

CHADDERTON HALL PARK

BLACKSTONE EDGE

Chadderton Hall Road, OL9 0QB Small car park at the bottom of Haigh Lane, Chadderton, OL9 0QB (or on-road parking on Chadderton Hall Road)

We park at the White House pub (OL15 0LG) and then walk a bit further past the pub along the main road before taking the well marked path going off to the left.

The playground has a few things removed at the minute due to Covid (including the zip wire). There is, however, still a sandy area with a rope bridge, a tunnel and a pretend train.

The paths are mainly bike-able and scoot-able (but there are also a couple of hills).

The best thing about this park is an accessible stream (the River Irk) in which to paddle, splash and throw stones. If you walk a short distance westwards along the River Irk you can even see an aqueduct (the Irk Aqueduct), where the Rochdale Canal crosses the river. You could then get onto the canal (up the steps) and walk to Foxdenton Park.

One of our favourite walks (when it’s not covered in fog) is along the Pennine Way at the top of Blackstone Edge.

The path is quite stoney but it’s flat and traffic free so fab for bike practice, good for dog walks and ok for pram pushing (although it is a bit of a bumpy ride).

The path runs for a couple of miles before it becomes less toddler/pram friendly as it heads towards the secret beach at Gaddings Dam. The views are amazing... like having climbed a mountain without the effort. There’s a few nice things to spot, such as a little bridge, writing on rocks and numerous reservoirs.

CROMPTON MOOR

GREENBOOTH RESERVOIR

Shaw, OL2 8NA We followed the 'orange route' which was helpfully located on a board in the car park and went up through some stunning, symmetrical trees, past Brushes Clough reservoir and then down the hill with views of Oldham and Rochdale before us.

The walk was less than two miles but given it involved going uphill it took us forever.

However, not quite content with 'forever', we then went down the hill from the car park to look at the Pingot Quarry waterfall. It really was quite spectacular, especially from the perspective of a three year old!

There is a small car park at the very top of Woodhouse Lane, Norden, Rochdale on a track called Forsyth Lane, OL12 7TL. It was beautiful to the extent that my little boy didn’t want to go home, but actually wanted to keep on walking!

We did a kind of figure of eight route around Naden Middle Reservoir and the main Greenbooth Reservoir discovering lots of different things, including a magical waterfall.

Although some of the paths would be pram-able and bikeable, I think you could be prevented by the kissing gates/cattle grids.

YANKEE HEAVEN REOPENS IN LITTLEBOROUGH

Family-run candle and gift shop, Yankee Heaven, has now found a new home, just off Canal Street in Littleborough. The fantastic location, close to Hollingworth Lake, is proving incredibly popular with local families and is becoming somewhat of a tourist destination in itself, welcoming visitors from miles around.

Owned by husband and wife team, Mark and Lauren Jones, the larger premises now combine both of their stores - Yankee Heaven (previously on Harehill Road) and Fizz Bomb (previously in The Wheatsheaf Centre) - offering a huge range of candles, wax melts, bath bombs and gifts.

They have also opened a takeaway refreshment service with outdoor seating, boasting incredible views next to the canal. They offer delicious real dairy ice cream, milkshakes, smoothies, tea/coffee and cake (sandwich menu coming soon).

7 TIPS TO HELP YOUR FAMILY'S

MENTAL WELLBEING Seven Tips to help children (and parents) get back to 'normal' - when 'normal' might feel a little strange - from the expert team at Beyond Psychology Ltd, Rochdale.

As we come out of lockdown and return to a life that used to be so familiar to us, a lot of us are probably wondering why it feels so strange, unsettling and challenging! After all, we managed to balance family life with work, school, and clubs for everyone before?

Realistically, we have spent so long in lockdown with restrictions imposed on us that the 'new normal' has really settled in for many of us and with so much changing so quickly over the last few weeks, we’re likely to feel anxious at times.

If we’re feeling that way, so are our children, so here are some tips that might help support their mental health at this stressful time.

1. CHAT ABOUT SCHOOL

Why not try putting some time aside after school called 'Family Feedback Time'. You can take this chance to sit down with the whole family and everyone can talk about their day, both what went well and what not so well. As a parent, you can show them how to do it by talking about your day and show them that it is okay to share. Having this at the same time every day lets your child know that they have a safe, predictable place where their worries and connected feelings can be heard.

2. NAME THE FEELING

When your child shares their worries, trying to name their emotions by 'wondering aloud' can be useful to help them develop their understanding of emotions. Use phrases like "You seem frustrated" or "You look sad right now" to help them to make these links.

3. MAKE THINGS PREDICTABLE

Where possible make sure your child knows what is happening in advance. You can use calendars for this in your child’s favourite colour and a whiteboard at their eye level to write down the plan for a day, three days, or a week.

4. HELP CHILDREN FEEL IN CONTROL

Children are likely feeling out of control now as their world is turned upside down with so many changes, so it can help to give them control as much as possible. As a parent you need to ultimately be in control, but offering small choices such as what to watch on the television or what to have at snack time can increase their ability to cope.

5. BE EXPLICIT ABOUT BEING THERE

When talking with your children, try to get on a level with them, offer comfort by touching or holding their hand and use phrases like "I’m here for you" or "This feels difficult right now". Even though we know we always mean these things, sometimes it helps to be explicit.

6. CORRECT WHEN CALM

Even the best laid plans cannot prevent our children getting upset and sometimes angry. Try to stay calm and in control (we know this is hard!) and only correct their behaviour when they have calmed down. Say things such as "We can’t speak to people like that" or offer natural and logical consequences rather than forced, unrelated ones.

For example, helping them think about how to make things better if they have lashed out at someone, rather than confiscate their iPad.

7. SELF-CARE

The more you care for yourself, the more able you are to care for your children. Try to set some time aside, even if it’s just ten minutes, to do something you enjoy such as have a long shower, read your book or make space to drink a cup of tea.

ROCHDALE AFC JOINS MENTAL HEALTH CAMPAIGN Rochdale Football Club and Rochdale AFC Community Trust have joined forces with the charity Mind to help raise awareness among fans about mental health.

Mind’s most recent research found that more than half of adults and two-thirds of young people saying their mental health got worse during the first lockdown.

At the recent fixture against Accrington Stanley, Dale players wore Mind branded t-shirts during the warm-up, while the club shared key information across their social media channels.

The charity hopes mental health-themed matchdays like this will begin to open up the conversation among football fans about their mental health, as well as raising awareness about the support Mind offers at this difficult time.

The Mind matchday was part of Mind’s charity partnership with the EFL, which has seen the charity work with all 72 EFL clubs, including Rochdale AFC, to help bring a lasting legacy around mental health in football.

Mind has a confidential information and support line, Mind Infoline, available on 0300 123 3393 (lines open 9am 6pm, Monday – Friday).

Rochdale AFC Community Trust have also recently launched 'GOALS', a new programme offering football for mental health sessions. The sessions are open to anyone who would like to benefit their mental wellbeing through socialising and engaging in physical activity. The sessions are free of charge and take place on Tuesdays from 1.30pm–2.30pm on the Kick Pitch at the Crown Oil Arena. Mind’s own research shows that over half of people feel that football fans find it easier to show their emotions at football matches than at any other time. Despite this, the charity also knows that many fans, particularly men, are struggling in silence for fear of opening up about their mental health. This is likely to have been made all the worse by the impact of the pandemic.

BOOSTING YOUR MENTAL & PHYSICAL HEALTH POST-LOCKDOWN

Well, lockdown three wasn’t quite lockdown one.

Luckily for me, the first lockdown last March saw an enforced time out from a very busy work life and in came BBQ and beers in the garden with what was a very early but spectacular summer.

Fast forward ten months and the Covid related fatigue had truly set in; COVID seemed to have crept much closer to home, cold dark days, yet another lockdown, financial worries, bad lifestyle habits creeping and children and adults alike desperate to get back to school and work – I never thought I’d see the day.

But in the here and the now, spring has brought a new day and new opportunities with restrictions slowly being lifted, longer days, better weather and a sense of normality resuming – we hope this time for good.

If there are two lessons to take away from a global pandemic it's that life is truly precious and health really is wealth.

If you are someone that feels the last twelve months has had a negative impact on your health, whether that be mental, physical, or both, I want you to do two things for me: 1. Give yourself a break, don’t be too hard on yourself - you just survived a global pandemic where millions weren’t so lucky. This is our generation's world war, the story we will tell the grandkids – even if you don’t realise it yet.

2. Identify what it is about your health that has suffered and why that is.

An example on the second point would be "I have gained a stone in the past year due to the gym's being closed and lack of motivation to exercise at home and I have gone from drinking one bottle of wine per week to three".

You have accepted there is a problem, you have identified exactly what the problem is and the answer is staring you in the face – get back to the gym and reduce that alcohol intake slightly. Weight will slowly return to previous levels and health will have improved as a result.

Improving and optimising your health can be done very simply and by ticking boxes on a daily day to day basis: HYDRATION – Drink 2-3 litres daily. Every function of the body requires water, you cant perform anywhere near optimal if you're dehydrated.

NUTRITION – Eat a well balanced diet focusing on the nutrient content of your meals over everything else. High protein content through meat, eggs, fish, yoghurt or a veggie/vegan alternative with every meal plus 3-6 servings of fruit and veg per day as a minimum. Food should be tasty and satisfying but also see it as fuel - you wouldn’t put poor fuel in your car if you knew it was going to break it over time.

MOVEMENT – We are designed to move, move regularly and move well, 'Motion is Lotion'. Aim for a minimum of 8000 steps per day, less than this is classed as sedentary, being this inactive over time can lead to lots of illness and ailments down the line related to cardiovascular disease, circulation problems and poor bone health.

EXERCISE – I’m afraid hitting your basic movement goals isn’t exercise. This very much depends on factors including age, current health and ability and is very personal to the individual but as a general rule we want to be aiming for a minimum of twice per week performing 30 minutes of exercise that is more than a walk. I would highly recommend a mixture cardiovascular exercise in the form of cycling or swimming and some form or resistance training using weights or bodyweight to really get the muscles working under load.

By working on the four points above consistently day to day, week after week you will feel and see the benefits of giving your body the treatment and respect it deserves.

ROCHDALE FRIENDS UNITE IN THEIR MISSION TO ENSURE NO ONE HAS TO WALK ALONE

Well Mental UK began when two friends, Julianne Noon and John Barlow, from Heywood, met by chance through their own mental health journeys.

Julianne explained: "John was struggling with drugs and alcohol and has now been sober for around 19 months and I was very down and overweight and have now lost 5 stone. We decided to make form Well Mental UK to give back, share positivity and help others who may be in similar situations or need that bit of motivation and reassurance. Life can be hard, very hard for everyone - for totally different reasons. Our friend Scott Hardy soon joined our team and we are now set up as a Community Interest Company."

The aim of Well Mental UK is to have a positive impact on people’s mental health and wellbeing by motivating them to get physically active and outdoors. They have created a safe and welcoming community for people of all backgrounds, sharing positivity and awareness of mental health to aid in recovery and change people’s lives for the better.

Julianne commented: "We both witnessed first-hand how walking and exercise helped towards making us feel better and reducing stress levels.

"We now organise regular walks for our followers to get together so that people don’t have to walk alone. It can also be a great way to meet and make new friends. There’s lots of beautiful places to see and memories to make and everyone is welcome.

"We share stories on our social media pages of people that have been through struggle, no matter how big or small, and what changes those people have made and are continuing to make to their lives. Our aim is to have stories from people that have been inspired by Well Mental UK and what effects this has had on their wellbeing.

"We have had such a great response already; lots of people and companies want to get on board to help us. Lucy from The Thread Shed recently donated £400 for us to buy t-shirts to share with people who join the walks. And we have had lots private messages from people who struggle with addictions and are working on themselves, saying how our page has helped them."

REMEMBERING DALE SUPERFAN, 'CLOUGHIE' A lasting tribute to Rochdale 'superfan' David Clough will be in place at the Crown Oil Arena for the start of the 2021/22 campaign.

Thanks to the generosity of Dale fans and supporters of clubs across the football family, a statue dedicated to 'Cloughie' will take pride of place inside the stadium.

David, who lived in Littleborough and worked at the former Whittles Bakery, was a Goldbond Agent for over 25 years and served an incredible 800 members. During his time as a Goldbond Agent, it is estimated that he raised over half a million pounds for the club! Not only that, such was his love for Rochdale Football Club, Mr Clough bequeathed his entire estate to the club upon his death last year.

It was announced in January that some of his legacy would be used to purchase a scoreboard at the Crown Oil Arena. Scanlite have been appointed to supply and install the scoreboard, which will be located on the fascia of the Reside Stand for all home fans to see. That, too, will be in place for the new season.

One supporter - Mark Cryer - was so touched by Cloughie’s gesture and support of the club, that he set up a JustGiving Page to raise funds to commission the lasting tribute to David at the Crown Oil Arena and to retire his seat. The idea came from Spanish side Valencia, who did something similar for a supporter of their club.

Thanks to the magnificent efforts of those who donated, the £10,000 target was reached in less than two weeks, and a statue will now be placed upon Cloughie’s seat in the Main Stand.

Sculptor Simon Carter has been commissioned to create the statue. It’s currently at the clay model stage of production.

Winner of MasterChef 2021, Tom Rhodes, shares a few of his favourite recipes. Here's a step-by-step guide to these vibrant, seasonal dishes.

Crispy Chicken Bánh Mì King of sandwiches What makes a great sandwich? In my mind it has to have both contrasts in textures and flavours. I want something soft, maybe spreadable, I want crisp and crunch, I want juicy to the point of dripping, sweet AND salty, I want spice and acidity, I want something deep in favour and yet light and refreshing. I’m high maintenance when it comes to sandwiches and I want it all. Keep your monotonous meal deals, your ham and cheese, your tuna mayo, I want the king of sandwiches.

The sandwich that takes the crown, the bánh mì, can be found at street vendors across the Vietnam. Within the baguette lies a trove of cold cuts or slow roasted meats or delicious sausage, crunchy pickles, fragrant herbs and a myriad of condiments; there’s almost always a pâté of sorts, then maybe mayonnaise or butter and then perhaps sriracha or hoisin and maybe those you’re less familiar with like liquid seasoning or nuoc cham. I say the more condiments the better. In Vietnam these sandwiches cost maybe £1 at most, but that makes it no less deserving of royal reverence.

Here is my Crispy Chicken Bánh Mì done the way I like it. It may not quite live up to baguettes I had in Vietnam they really know their stuff - but it’s a damn good sandwich.

Ingredients (serves 2) 2 small - medium sized baguettes 4 boneless chicken thighs 2 tbsp vegetable oil Half a cucumber, thinly sliced Quick pickled veg (recipe below), drained Soft herbs (mint, coriander, Thai Basil, dill etc.)

Condiments (mayo, sriracha, hoisin etc.)

2 tbsp fish sauce 2 tbsp lime juice 2 tbsp sugar 2 bird’s eye chilli, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, grated or finely chopped

1. Start by making a nuoc cham by combining fish sauce, lime juice, sugar, chilli and garlic with 2 tbsp cold water. Stir to dissolve the sugar and set aside.

4. When you’re ready to assemble, slice your baguettes in half horizontally, not going all the way through, leave a hinge like you would on a hot dog bun. Remove some of the bread inside to make room for the filling.

5. On the bottom half spread mayonnaise and on the top half spread hoisin. Slice your chicken and place this into the baguette and top with sriracha. Then place the cucumbers, followed by quick pickled veg and your herbs. Lastly spoon over the nuoc cham allowing it to dress the various elements and soak into the bread.

Close the baguette up and enjoy.

2. Next heat a skillet over a medium high heat. Season the thighs liberally with salt and then once the pan is hot add the oil and place the chicken thighs in skin side down.

I like to then cover the chicken thighs with a sheet of parchment paper or foil and then rest another heavy pan on top. This ensures the skin has maximum contact with the pan, allowing the skin to get super crispy. Cook the thighs without moving them or flipping them. Once the skin is crispy, about 3-4 minutes then flip them over and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until cooked through.

Don’t worry if they stick to the pan, continue to cook and check them and once the skin is crispy enough they will release naturally.

Quick Pickled Veg

3. Once your chicken is cooked set it aside and allow it to rest for 5 minutes. While the chicken is resting make sure you have the rest of your ingredients ready.

3. If using straight away then add vinegar and sugar to the vegetables and stir to combine. Leave to sit for 10 minutes, after this they are ready to consume. If preparing in advance, dilute the vinegar with 100ml of water. The vegetables will keep in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Ingredients 250g firm vegetables (carrots, daikon, radish, beetroot etc.), sliced into thin strips or matchsticks 2 tsp salt 100ml white distilled vinegar 2 tsp sugar

1. Combine sliced vegetables and salt and set asides in a bowl for 5 minutes.

2. After 5 minutes drain an liquid from the bowl.

Prawn Linguine Fresh, light and quick perfect for eating outside, glass of wine in one hand, fork tangled with linguine in the other.

Ingredients (serves 2) 250g linguine or long pasta 12 large prawns, raw, preferably with head & shell on Olive oil 4 garlic cloves, finely sliced 1 tsp chilli flakes 150-200g cherry tomatoes, halved 100ml white wine 1 tbsp fish sauce Juice of half a lemon plus extra for serving Handful of parsley, finely chopped Salt and black pepper Note: This recipe goes quick, with the sauce taking as long as the pasta takes to cook, so having everything prepped and ready will be a big help.

1. Bring a large pan of well seasoned water to the boil for your pasta.

2. Remove the heads and shells from the prawns, keep them as you’ll need them in a minute.

Next slice vertically down the back of the prawn, from top to tail. Remove the thin black entrails and discard them.

Roughly chop the prawn meat.

3. Once you’re ready to go, add your pasta to the boiling water and heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook your pasta according to packet instructions.

4. Once the skillet is heated, add the oil, enough to just cover the base of your pan, followed by the prawn heads and shells. Cook until they turn pink and the oil takes on a coral hue.

5. Once the shells have taken on colour, remove them from the pan, squeezing any oil or juicy bits back into the pan as you remove them. The shells can now be discarded.

6. Add thinly sliced garlic and chilli flakes to the pan and cook until fragrant, you don’t want any colour on the garlic here, 30secs-1min.

7. Next add chopped cherry tomatoes to the pan. As soon as they begin to soften, add the white wine and allow to reduce by half.

8. By now your pasta should almost be ready. With a couple of minutes left on the pasta, add the fish sauce and prawn meat to the skillet and stir to allow the prawns to cook through.

9. Once your pasta is ready add it straight from the pot to the sauce using a pair of tongs.

Reserve at least 100ml of pasta water.

10. Add your lemon juice and parsley and toss the pasta vigorously to coat it in the sauce. Add small amounts of pasta water if needed, this will help the sauce emulsify and coat the pasta. Taste for seasoning and serve with lemon wedges.

Smoked Mackerel with Citrus & Herb Salad A super simple salad that serves four as a starter, or two as a light lunch. It’s quick, full of flavour and perfect for summer.

Ingredients 300g smoked mackerel 2 oranges 1 bunch coriander 1 bunch basil 1 bunch mint 1 shallot/red onion 1 tbsp fish sauce 1 tbsp lime juice 1 tbsp sugar 2-4 fresh birds eye chilli

1. Remove skin from the mackerel and flake into large pieces and set aside in a large mixing bowl.

2. Slice the skin from the oranges and either slice into rounds or segments and add to the bowl.

3. Finely slice the shallot into rounds and add those to the bowl, along with the leaves picked from the herbs.

4. Finely slice the chillies and whisk together with fish sauce, lime juice, sugar and 1 tbsp cold water in a separate bowl to make the dressing.

5. Just prior to serving, coat the mackerel, citrus and herb salad in the dressing and toss well before dividing between serving dishes.

31-year-old Tom Rhodes, originally from Rochdale, has been crowned BBC One's MasterChef 2021 champion, following a spectacular final in which he created three Japanese-infused courses.

MasterChef judge, John Torode, said: Tom walked into the kitchen and surprised us. He has defined himself a style all of his own and its fantastic. His food is delicious and looks beautiful."

Judge Gregg Wallace added: "He is a phenomenal talent and the sky's the limit for him."

Style caught up with Tom to chat about his passion for experimenting with flavour, his future plans and why his feet remain firmly on the ground...

food Does it still seem a bit surreal that you’re Masterchef’s 17th champion?

I’m not sure I’ll ever get used to that! I watched the show for years and years and followed some of the past champions, so to consider myself now as one of those people, I’m still getting my head around it for sure!

Are you still working as a front of house manager at Nando’s?

Yes I’m still at Nando’s – still got the bills to pay. I had no idea what to expect coming out of the competition. I’ve seen some of the amazing thing past champions have gone on to do but I didn’t know how quickly or slowly those things could happen. So I’m still working here; it’s keeping me humble!

You must be getting recognised a lot?

Yeah I’ve been getting recognised quite a bit. I’ve had people stopping me in supermarkets and pulling over in cars! I think that’s one of the most unusual things to get used to, that all these strangers suddenly know who you are.

What made you apply for the show?

I’ve always loved cooking and like I said I’ve always loved MasterChef. I actually applied for the first time ten years ago, got quite far in the process but obviously didn’t make it onto the show. And then kind of got swept up in work and day-to-day life. hen last year, lockdown put things into perspective and really made me think "what do I actually want to do with my life?". MasterChef seemed a bit of a long shot but I thought it would be the perfect springboard if I did get on it. So I just took a shot at it during lockdown and here we are now.

Were you in the kitchen a lot during lockdown?

I’m always in the kitchen! But with no restaurants or holidays, it was great to get in the kitchen and try to recreate some dishes from my favourite restaurants, try new flavours from places that perhaps I would have been travelling to if there wasn’t a pandemic. I was doing cookalongs with friends over Zoom too.

How old were you when you first discovered your passion for food?

I’ve loved being in the kitchen from about 4 or 5 years old. I’d get whatever I could find in the cupboard and mix it up in a bowl.

Sometimes I’d cook it, sometimes I’d leave it in the fridge for my parents to find!

I loved that experimentation in the kitchen.

I don’t know if I was making anything particularly edible back then! And then I’d watch my parents make food and get involved. In my teenage years I became particularly fascinated with how to make things from scratch – mayonnaise, breads, different sauces – so I think that’s where I built up a lot of my skill in the kitchen.

You mix traditional dishes with Japanese flavours - was that an experiment that just happened to work out well?!

Yeah, I mean sometimes it didn’t work out!

I won’t lie to you, I’ve had plenty of kitchen fails in the past. The dishes I cook are very much the food that I grew up with and ingredients I’m familiar with, but then I just add these Japanese flavours into it as a little bit of a twist I guess and to put my own stamp on things. I’ve always loved Japanese flavours and experimenting with flavour.

What have you learnt about yourself from being in the show?

Watching yourself on television is a bit of a unique experience. You really get to reflect on how you come across. I think I demonstrated that I can be adventurous and love to try new things. And also that I’m really good at keeping calm under pressure, certainly on the surface at least, which I think is a good trait to have. There was a little bit of swan vibes about it – cool on the surface but paddling furiously underneath!

But I do believe that the kitchen is my happy place - the place I feel most comfortable.

I think as soon as you get stressed in the kitchen, it tends to be when things start falling apart. So it’s important to keep your cool.

What are your top tips for people who end up cooking the same meals every week?

Do try to stick with what you’re familiar with, because at the end of the day you want to make a delicious meal, so don’t go for anything crazy - but it’s amazing how much flavour you can add in just by changing out a few ingredients. Pick up some things from the supermarket that you’re not familiar with like Miso or Harissa spice paste and then try to add those to dishes you already cook. So if you’re making a roast chicken for example, you can then play around with the flavour by rubbing it in some Miso. Just be daring and experiment with new flavours.

Who inspires you as a chef?

Growing up I was a huge Nigella Lawson and Nigel Slater fan – they were some of the first cookbooks I had. I loved their approachable home style. Nigella has always been somebody that I think has been ahead of the curve in regards to using new flavours in her cooking. I actually follow a lot of people online – there’s a guy called Nik Sharma in the States and he looks at how science can be applied to food and flavour.

You have a science background too – do you think this influences how you create your dishes?

Yes I did a chemistry degree but it’s funny because I didn’t enjoy doing chemistry at University very much, hence why I didn’t go into it and work at Nando’s now! But it’s amazing how much of a role science actually plays in food. When you’re cooking it’s just chemical reactions that are taking place and if you understand what those reactions are you can make your food even more delicious. So yeah, it’s kind of come full circle in that regard.

How many cookbooks do you own?

It’s got to be over 300 now! A lot of people saw my colour-coded cookbook shelf on the show which I think looks amazing even though I can never find any of the cookbooks I want because I can't remember the spine colour! As well as those I have piles of cookbooks in the kitchen, by my bed, on the coffee table. You’d be under no confusion as to what my passion was if you were to walk into my house!

Any plans to write your own?

Yes that’s the dream I think! So hopefully, in the not-too-distant future I’ll be able to add my own cookbook to my shelves.

What other plans do you have?

One of the things I wasn’t expecting when I went onto the show was how much I loved being in a professional kitchen. So I certainly wouldn’t rule out having my own restaurant one day. And then what I’m really looking forward to, particularly after the year we’ve all had, is doing food festivals over the summer.

Do you come back to Rochdale often?

I do actually yeah. My parents still live in Rochdale and we’re quite a close family.

Obviously that wasn’t possible throughout a lot of last year which has been one of the most difficult things for me.

How did they react to your win?

They’re immensely proud which is lovely.

Even though mum knew the result I think she was still incredibly nervous about watching it on television.

What was your favourite moment of the competition?

Plaisterers Hall was a particularly special moment. It was our only time in a commercial kitchen where we were cooking our own food which was a big deal. We were also cooking for the most amazing people - the food heroes of lockdown - so it felt great to be celebrating them and giving back in even just a small way, to say thank you for all that they’d done over lockdown.

What's On in the Arts Our local creative community has been typically innovative in its response to the deprivations we have all been enduring through the seemingly interminable Covid-19 Pandemic. Providing us with such as art packs, online workshops, virtual exhibitions, and virtual performances. Without their efforts us culture lovers would have found the withdrawal from active participation in and contact with the arts even more difficult to endure.

Creatives massively contribute to our individual and community resilience: combatting boredom, inspiring and consoling. It is with much relief and great anticipation that I can provide a taster of what we can look forward to locally across the arts as the ‘new normal’ limps over the Covid hill.

English Folk Expo presents ROCHDALE FOLK FESTIVAL on 4 - 6 June. Over a full weekend, free music events will be happening in local venues across town, including The Medicine Tap, Touchstones Rochdale, and The Flying Horse, with additional street performances occurring all around the town centre.

Additionally, taking place in the stunningly beautiful St Mary’s in the Baum, will be three ticketed gigs with an intimate, socially distanced audience, but there is also the option to watch the gigs from your home via live stream.

On Friday 4 June THE HUT PEOPLE, will take the audience on a musical trip across the globe, with their hugely entertaining blend of 'world-folk'. On Saturday 5 June, an uplifting afternoon of music from THE RHEINGANS SISTERS, the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winners. Saturday night brings JON BODEN & THE REMNANT STRINGS, performing self-penned songs as well as material from Bellowhead, Spiers & Boden, and Jon's A Folk Song A Day project, in which he recorded 365 folk songs in one year.

English Folk Expo Chief Executive, Tom Besford said: "I'm delighted to be working with Rochdale Town Centre Management and the Council to bring live music to our beautiful town centre. Rochdale is looking better than ever with loads of great pubs, restaurants, and attractions. We're all looking forward to safely enjoying fantastic live music once again."

Like so many things, in 2020 the long-standing Darnhill Festival was cancelled. Determined not to let the area miss out again, Darnhill Festival Association are working with Cartwheel Arts to host the area’s first 'ARTS WEEK' during the May/June half term.

A series of pop-up activity around the theme of 'Wonder' will take place in and around Darnhill library from Monday 31 May to Sunday 6 June.

There will be plenty of opportunities to get involved from decorating your own window at home, attending a bookable nature art workshop, exploring the estate for new artwork, or having a go on a climbing wall. Full details and a full line-up of activity is being finalised and residents will receive details of activity through their doors soon. EBOR STUDIO and GALLERY FRANK are in the initial stages of planning a SUMMER EVENT in their garden with food, drink, music, art demonstrations, talk and demonstration of the beehive and an exhibition in the gallery. They are hoping it will be in July.

SALTARELLO - an exhibition by Kara Lyons is opening in Gallery Frank from Tuesday to Friday 10 - 5.30 or by appointment, Sunday 23 May until Saturday 5 June. Saltarello is an Italian folkloric dance and used here as the title of this exhibition of sculptures and drawings by Kara Lyons. This work, although abstract, is suggestive of the uninhibited movement of women’s’ dance as a celebration of convivial feminine joy.

PLASTIC GRASS - an exhibition of sound, installation, sculpture, and video by Maryanne Royle will be in the gallery from 12 - 26 June. The show contains an imagined past; an absurd and fanciful dream inspired by speculative fiction and a brass quintet.

The exhibition can be viewed by appointment or during a daytime event in the garden on the 19 June featuring a performance from Manchester band Beau Mec. Four Ebor artists are doing a sound art project with Manchester International Festival which will culminate in an event at St.Chad’s Church in Rochdale on either the 8 or 15 July. mif.co.uk/mif-sounds-artist-announcement/

The 2021 Festival programme includes socially distanced performances, free exhibitions and installations across the city and the return of Festival Square, the beating heart of the Festival, with free live music and DJs and great food and drink in a new location in Cathedral Gardens.

OLDHAM COLISEUM THEATRE is preparing to welcome audiences back into the historic building from 24 June as part of an eclectic Summer season combining a return to live theatre, a continuation of innovative online events and an outdoor Pride celebration.

After over a year of closure due to the pandemic the first live theatre show at the Coliseum will be the award-winning Edinburgh Fringe sell-out one-woman show "THE GREATEST PLAY IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD..."

"The Greatest Play in the History of the World…" takes us on a heartfelt journey that starts and ends in a small, unassuming house on a quiet suburban road. Julie narrates this story of two neighbours and the people on their street, in a universal love story that celebrates the human race in all its glorious messiness, confusion and joy.

Starring BAFTA nominated Julie Hesmondhalgh (Coronation Street, Broadchurch) and written by Ian Kershaw, the play is squashed full of exquisite observation and heartbreaking beauty. The breathtaking show, which previously ran in London’s West End has been adapted especially to fit with potential continuing coronavirus restrictions.

The Greatest Play in the History of the World runs from Thursday 24 – Saturday 26 June.

Wider afield MANCHESTER INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL (MIF) returns from 1-18 July with a wide-ranging programme spanning visual art, theatre, music, dance, digital and film, by artists from Manchester and all over the world.

As a Festival of original new work and specially created events, MIF has been able to work with artists and venues creatively to develop a varied and flexible Festival that can safely go-ahead whatever restrictions are in place.

Events will take place safely in indoor and outdoor locations across Greater Manchester as well as online.

A new era for Moorhouse Primary School begins as it joined the Watergrove Trust on 1st April 2021 to become Moorhouse Academy.

THE SECRET LIFE OF THE HOPWOOD HALL ZOO Did you know that some of the world’s most rare and wonderful animals are right on your doorstep?

Forget about wandering the Australian Outback or the Amazon Rainforest – you’ll find the quirkiest creatures at Hopwood Hall College and University Centre. This includes a new troupe of wallabies, which are now official residents at the sprawling 70-acre Middleton Campus. The exotic animals – which are members of the kangaroo clan – are set to live a long and happy life in the college’s unique woodland setting. In fact, a few of the wallabies are even carrying baby joeys in their pouches already!

All in all, more than 700 species of animals are now homed at Hopwood Hall. Just some of the rare wildlife includes meerkats, potoroos and armadillos, as well as many other creatures that are officially classed as endangered.

It’s fair to say that there’s never a dull day for those students completing a qualification in Veterinary Nursing or Animal Management, whether at post-school level or Higher Education. Army Reservist joins Rochdale law firm A Rochdale solicitors has expanded its private client team this year with the appointment of private client solicitor, Lisa Davies.

Lisa, 38, joined Molesworths Bright Clegg Solicitors earlier this year, and as part of her role is using her military experience as an Army Reservist to serve the town’s Armed Forces and Veteran personnel.

As well as her 20 years’ experience in the MOD, Lisa is also bringing with her 12 years of business know-how to the team. Lisa will work closely with private clients on their wills, probate, powers of attorney and trusts.

Lisa said: "It’s great to be working at Molesworths, I thoroughly enjoy the client relationships that come with working in the private client department. I hope to build a strong bond with clients and families connected to the Armed Forces using my first hand understanding of their circumstances and sustaining high level of good quality service that can be relied upon. After completing an operational tour in Iraq in 2006, Lisa went on to work in Canada employed in an Operations and Deployment role before moving to work in legal practice and more recently joining the team at Molesworths. She has delivered basic military training as an instructor and is also a qualified instructor assessor and mentor, currently she is the company lead for logistics within a training unit. She has represented the army at skeleton bobsleigh and the county at ten pin bowling.

Littleborough sisters launch their own fashion brand Sorelle is an exciting new fashion brand owned by enterprising Littleborough sisters, Mollie Butterworth and Emma Zyla.

Having launched in December 2020, Sorelle has gained popularity for its on-trend slogan sweatshirts.

Mollie, who also owns Pretty Parade Boutique in Littleborough, explained: "All styles are designed in house and we pride ourselves on attention to detail and the quality of the materials we use, as well as making products at an affordable price."

Mollie said: “We decided to launch the brand, after seeing a gap in the market for cute, comfy and affordable sweatshirts.

I really struggled to find brands like this for the shop. Plus we wanted to do something together, as we both love fashion! We've had a really good response with the Sunday Funday sweatshirt and the Big Dreams Wild Heart sweatshirt proving especially popular."

SPRINGHILL HOSPICE NEWS & EVENTS NURSING RESILIENCE APPEAL Springhill Hospice has continued to care for people in Rochdale throughout the pandemic. But they need your help as they face long, difficult months ahead.

Springhill Hospice doctor, Charlotte Barber explains: "I’m here to ask for your urgent help to support our incredible Hospice care team, who have continued to care for people across the borough right through the pandemic. Firstly, I want to ask you to please make a donation – so we can afford to keep our Hospice nursing and care services going during 2021. And, secondly, I want to ask you to please send a message of encouragement and thanks to our nurses and staff. They are shattered – and are now facing an even bigger challenge this year.

"More and more patients, people living with cancer and other terminal conditions, are coming to us needing urgent care. They’ve had limited access to hospital clinics, tests and primary care over the last year due to pressures from the pandemic – and are now much more poorly than they should have been. With the NHS still completely overstretched because of COVID, we’re the only people who can help them.

But – being honest and blunt with you – we’re all absolutely shattered. Physically and emotionally, this has been the hardest time in all our careers. What’s kept us going is the fact that despite all the PPE and the masks - we’ve still been able to deliver expert, human, compassionate care for local people at the most vulnerable time in their lives.

"Working at Springhill feels like being part of an amazing, caring family. And you are a part of that family too. We’re going through dark days right now, as many are. But, together, we will make it to the light we now most definitely see at the end of this very long tunnel. Thank you for your friendship and, in advance, for your generosity. Let’s hope we may be able to see each other in better times very soon. Keep safe and keep well. With best wishes from us all here in the Hospice team."

⁣ Since receiving his fluorescent uniform and lollipop stick as a gift, the 5-year-old has enjoyed helping his neighbours on Milnrow’s Pennine Estate to safely cross the road. ⁣ ⁣ Cody’s grandmother Sharon Hughes commented: "He kept asking for a lollipop man outfit and it’s the best thing I bought him; he absolutely loves it.⁣ ⁣ "We first took him out with his 3-yearold twin brothers Louie and Logan and now he wants to go out with his lollipop stick all the time! It makes it even more fun when people participate and ask him to cross them over the road and people in their cars stop for him." ⁣ Sharon added: "One lady asked him to help her cross the road and said that he had really made her day and cheered her up as she lived alone and he was the only person she had seen."

NADIA'S LOCKDOWN IDEA IS THE ICING ON THE CAKE! A Rochdale student has been using her passion for baking to put smiles on the faces of hundreds of care home residents during the coronavirus pandemic.

After hearing stories about older people missing out on visitors, 17-year-old Nadia Riley decided to try and cheer them up, baking cakes at home and delivering them to grateful residents.

Over the last nine months she’s made and delivered a vast assortment of over 5,000 tasty cakes and sweet treats to fifteen residential care homes, from lemon drizzle cakes, shortbread and chocolate truffles to fruit scones, raspberry buns and peanut butter cookies.

Nadia explained: "During the first lockdown last year I was seeing on the news about people stuck in care homes not able to see their families or have visitors… and I just wanted to do something.

I figured most people appreciate a cake with their tea or coffee, so maybe donating cakes could cheer a few people up. That was all I wanted to do really, and luckily my family were up for helping me out and taking over the kitchen once a week!"

ROCHDALE COUPLE NAMED CENSUS 2021 COMMUNITY HEROES A Rochdale couple who have dedicated 45 years to fostering local children have been recognised as Census 2021 Heroes.⁣ ⁣ Marilyn and Michael Holt have given the best childhood possible to in excess of 300 children and are still in touch with many of them today.⁣ ⁣ Following hundreds of entries into the Census Community Hero Award, across England and Wales, Marilyn and Michael have been chosen as one of the 22 winners to get a purple plaque recognising the incredible impact they have had on their local community.⁣ Michael said: "This is really special for us. We started fostering in our 20s and we’ve never looked back, we love fostering. This award has made us really reflect on all that we’ve achieved and the difference we’ve made. Foster carers make a huge difference to local children so if you’ve ever considered it, do it, you really won’t regret it."

Their supporting social worker, Jessica, said: "I feel incredibly privileged to have been able to work with Marilyn and Michael. I don’t think they realise how wonderful they are – they are truly special and real heroes of Rochdale."⁣

NORDEN BROTHERS STEP OUT FOR CHARITY Three young brothers from Norden recently took part in a 10k relay to raise money for Manchester Children’s Hospital.⁣

⁣ George (8), Oliver (5) and Freddie Harper (4) were cheered on by local residents as they ran through Norden and Bamford alongside their dad, Alasdair Harper. ⁣ ⁣ The brothers raised over £1500 for the hospital’s renal unit in honour of 16-year-old Ethan Cutting. Ethan is the son of Alasdair’s work colleague at Woodhey High School in Bury, and is awaiting a second kidney transplant. ⁣ ⁣ Many staff members and pupils have taken on their own 10k challenges raising a grand total of over £14,000. ⁣ Proud mum, Liz Harper, commented: "The boys were absolutely fantastic and really enjoyed every step. The local support was overwhelming and we are really grateful to everyone who clapped, beeped or made a donation - thank you."⁣ Rochdale Style | 63

DANIEL COMPLETES EPIC 365 DAY CHALLENGE FOR CHARITY After setting himself the gruelling task of running 5k every day for a year, Daniel Kristof, from Milnrow, decided to push himself even further and finish his epic challenge with his first ever marathon distance (and then a little more!).

On the final day - Wednesday 31 March - Daniel completed a distance of 28 miles, starting in Rochdale and crossing the finish line at Media City in Salford to a rapturous applause from family, friends and supporters.

This challenge pushed me, mentally and physically but also gave me a reason to wake up early in the morning and do something great for the world every day (for a year) all whilst raising money for these incredible causes."

Daniel, who has been posting his journey on social media under the name ‘The Running Manc’, has been running through a global pandemic, every type of weather, injury and even running in his garden when selfisolating.

He said: "It has been the most amazing journey to be on - I have met so many inspiring people along the way and been able to conquer so many of my insecurities and fears... this challenge is just the beginning."

Over 365 days, kicking off on 1st April 2020, Daniel managed to clock up a total of over 2162km, raising an incredible £5050 in aid of The Team Hill Charitable Trust and Destination Florida Children’s Charity.

Explaining his choice of charities, Daniel said: "Team Hill raises money for local initiatives and causes, such as giving comfort packs to Royal Oldham Hospital, whilst Destination Florida takes 70 people every two years to Disney, Universal Studios, shopping etc., who wouldn’t necessarily be able to go on holiday."

Raising charity funds was top of Daniel's priorities but he said that wasn't his only motivation: "One of the other reasons I chose to push myself to the limit in this challenge is my own mental health. I’m a 25 year old, actively working in the hospitality

GIRLS AND LADIES ENCOURAGED TO GIVE RUGBY A TRY As lockdown ends, Rochdale Rugby Union Football Club (RRUFC) is encouraging new girls and ladies aged 11+ to take up something new and give rugby a try!

Everyone is welcome at Rochdale Rugby Union Club on Saturday 22nd May 1-3pm.

Player Claire Collins, explained: "The purpose of the event is to attract new players to the club and show them what rugby has to offer. The pandemic has hit us hard and we are currently struggling with our junior girls sections - there aren't enough girls to make a team."

Every attendee will receive a goodie bag sponsored by local companies including 'It’s an Indi Thing' and 'Dreamy Treats' and their own rugby ball.

The event comes as Rochdale RRUFC celebrate their 100th year as a club this coming season.
