the agenda
At writing time, the holiday season is just around the corner and the kids will soon be out of school for that long awaited winter break. Malls are abuzz with throngs of last minute shoppers and couriers are busy - all day, every day - delivering the last of those countless online gifts people ordered. The merriest day of the year is nearly upon us!
If a new custom-built home is on your wish list this season, check out Style’s cover story by Leigh Patterson - Rooms With a View – on a stunning contemporary bungalow built on a large property along the Red River. Designed to maximize the riverfront views, this fabulous home boasts a clean, linear design and exudes luxury both inside and out.
For those considering a home renovation, another must-read this issue is Beauty in the Details, Kelly Gray’s coverage on how a local renovator took an older mid-century residence, gutted it to the studs and breathed new life
into the aging décor. From its superb redesign, clean lines and innovative features to its contemporary colour palette, the results are simply beautiful.
And there’s more - many of you will be happy to know that the Winnipeg Renovation Show is back on! Held at the RBC Convention Centre from Jan 14-16, 2022, the event is a fantastic onestop information and inspiration hub for those planning a renovation project. This time, The Lifestyle Stage will feature HGTV Canada’s Todd Talbot from Love It or List It Vancouver, along with local pros, who will present tips to get your projects and inspiration flowing. There are also many other booths to explore featuring local products and services, including The Design Studio (sponsored by Style Manitoba).
After a long period of virtual performances only, it’s great to finally present a line-up of in-person concerts and events again in our Stepping Out section. As always, check for potential changes or cancellations, as restrictions may
vary at any time due to COVID. Also be aware that proof of vaccination will be required.
And there’s the rub – to vaccinate or not? There’s no doubt the past two years have been challenging - not just for Canadians, but for people all around the world. Blindsided by a global health crisis that no one could have foreseen, countries worldwide have been seriously impacted by the pandemic and the damage it has wrought, from considerable loss of life to overstrained healthcare systems and struggling economies. And it’s not over yet. The emergence of a concerning new variant has science and medical experts working around the clock towards solutions. And these are the professionals we should heed. As we leave 2021 behind, there’s hope in sight, with promises of an improved vaccine on the horizon. For everyone’s safety, please get vaccinated. And don’t forget your booster shot!

Custom-designed home maximizes riverfront property at every level

The home’s main floor accommodates the kitchen, great room, four-season sunroom, an office, master bedroom and ensuite. There’s a warm contemporary vibe throughout, and many windows means there’s lots of opportunities to enjoy the outdoor views from every room.
When clients challenged Mannington Custom Homes to build their contemporary bungalow on a large property along the Red River in East St. Paul, president Trevor Markevich and his team rose to the occasion—quite literally.
The clients envisioned their dream home to be clean, sophisticated and linear in design, and to take advantage of the river views. “Based on the feel of what they wanted, we landed on a theme of ‘Miami Modern,’” says Markevich. “From there, we designed the home to accommodate their wants and needs for their lifestyle, while maximizing best use of the home on the property itself.”
The Mannington Custom Homes team evaluated the size, location and direction of the property, as well as the river exposure. “We wanted to expose as many rooms as possible to the southwest, with tons of windows to grab those amazing river views,” says Markevich. Their design included a partial walkout in the lower level, which required further attention to detail. “We wanted all
levels of the property, front and back, to look aesthetically pleasing,” notes Markevich. “We didn’t want to build a stairway 15 steps up to the front entrance, for example.”
Thanks to the collaboration between Markevich, architect/ designer Tim Didur and interior design consultant Olenka Antymniuk of Olendia Design Ltd., the resulting design and materials work seamlessly together to achieve the homeowners’ custom vision for their luxury home on the Red River.
The home’s exterior consists of a striking series of elevations, but the linear, flat rooflines, expertly constructed by Civic Roofing, keeps everything harmonious. Specifically engineered and strategically located, a series of windows along the top of the garage create the illusion of a floating roof.
A low-maintenance façade of stone, acrylic stucco and siding ensure this home is built to stand the test of time. “We incorporated a full acrylic system with smooth quality finish done over 2” thick foam, which adds insulation value,” says Markevich. The garage doors supplied and installed by Reimer Overhead

The high ceilings allowed the builder to incorporate large linear transom windows at the top of the kitchen wall and above the sink at eye level. Carrara Tile & Marble supplied and installed the large, thin white porcelain panels used on the countertops and huge central island to create the clean, crisp look the homeowners desired. A butler’s pantry and coffee bar off the kitchen keeps clutter out of sight. Heirloom Cabinetry custom built the light fixture to accentuate the long, linear space.
Doors are powder-coated with an aluminum finish to ensure longevity, as are the railings on the rear deck by Windeck. Vinyl-wrapped PVC used for the doors and windows keep the elements out while letting plenty of natural light to stream in.
Even the surrounding landscaping is in keeping with the home’s modern design. Low maintenance shrubs, stones and boulders add visual interest, and the address feature in the front mirrors the exterior’s clean lines. The landscaping, sidewalk and driveway are designed and engineered so that they all lead gradually up to the front entrance.
In the kitchen, custom cabinetry from Heirloom Cabinetry consists of a modern grey laminate finish, and the warm-toned floors ground the space. An ingenious inline range hood retracts flat into the island when not in use to keep clutter to a minimum in this modern space. Spectacular river views can be enjoyed from the adjacent dining area.
The home’s inside reflects the outside, with a contemporary vibe throughout. The main floor accommodates the main living quarters: kitchen, great room, fourseason sunroom, an office, master bedroom and ensuite.
Aside from the big, glorious windows on all sides, the first feature
to catch your eye on entering the home is a large, eight-foot-long linear gas fireplace that can be enjoyed from both the kitchen area and great room. The fireplace’s warm and welcoming glow can also be viewed from the main entrance through a glass pane incorporated at the end.

No details were overlooked throughout the build process, which took about a year from start to finish due to its complexity and budget. Markevich says Mannington Custom Homes’ successful fulfillment was a team effort between client, Mannington and their suppliers and trades. “The clients were great to work with, Tim hit it out of the park with his design, and in addition to her wonderful design choices, Olenka was extremely organized and kept us on schedule,” says Markevich. Best of all, the clients were thrilled with the results.

Stepping Out with Style
By Quentin Mills-Fenn
Looking for something to do this winter? Well, many things are still up in the air. At time of press, several arts organizations hadn’t announced their winter and spring programming yet. There’s still a lot going on, though. Keep a lookout for the latest news and check out what we know…
MUSIC
The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra gives us just what we need in their (A)bsolute Classics Series. Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser leads the WSO in a program reminiscent of spring and summer with a joyful work by Florence Price, Haydn’s final symphony, and Mozart’s light, luminous oboe concerto, featuring WSO principal oboist Beverly Wang. The evening concludes with Aaron Copland’s soaring Suite from Appalachian Spring. (Jan 15, Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser, conductor)
The series continues with Two Pianos: Mozart, Hotoda & Woo. Hailed by the Spokesman-Review as being an “inexhaustible dynamo,” former WSO assistant conductor Rei Hotoda returns as guest conductor in a program featuring Jessie Montgomery’s autobiographical tone poem Records from a Vanishing City, Robert Schuman’s Spring Symphony and, in a duo performance with assistant conductor Naomi Woo, Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos. (Feb 5, Rei Hotoda, Conductor; Naomi Woo)
Meanwhile, (B)eyond Classics heralds the return of Evelyn Glennie as part of the New Music Festival for an evening of works by Jennifer Higdon, Kelly Marie Murphy, Giya Kancheli and WNMF co-founder and composer Glenn Buhr. (Jan 22, Daniel Raiskin, conductor)
One of today’s most outstanding pianists, Alexei Volodin performs in two
different concerts back-to-back. First, he tackles Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3. Daniel Raiskin and the WSO set the mood with a work that would feel at home on Everest’s peak, Tchaikovsky’s wild and powerful take on Shakespeare’s The Tempest (Feb 18, Daniel Raiskin, conductor) Then, it’s Thrills, Chills & Romance. The indefatigable Alexei Volodin moves on to Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, with all the swooning romance you could hope for. Daniel Raiskin frames this program with contemporary composer Alissa Firsova’s haunting Die Windsbraut and an epic journey through the nature of fate in Tchaikovsky’s powerful Fourth Symphony. (Feb 19, Daniel Raiskin, conductor)
Maybe as a warm-up for Festival de Voyageur, the Pops Series presents Li Keur, Riel’s Heart of the North, a reimagining of Louis Riel’s “missing” years and his love for the land, his people, his nation and a previously unknown woman. A new music theatre work by Métis poet/librettist Suzanne Steele and Winnipeg composer Neil Weisensel, and based on archival research, it’s performed in five languages (Cree-Michif, FrenchMichif, Anishinaabemowin, French, and English), and features vocalists, a narrator, Michif choirs, a fiddler, dancers, and the WSO. This debut of the full-length work is a cross collaboration written in the spirit of truth and reconciliation, heralding the Métis renaissance of the 21st century. (Feb 1113, evening and matinee performances, Julian Pellicano, conductor)
The WSO Kids Concerts brings you Jack and the Beanstalk. Based on Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhyme, this lively
show features a company of clever comedians, outrageous puppets, and a stunning 60-foot beanstalk that takes the original fairy tale and turns it on its head by transporting the all-ages audience to the vibrant world of Dahl’s fascinating imagination. Created by performers Doug McKeag and Onalea Gilbertson and featuring the ridiculous puppets of master puppeteer Judd Palmer and the Old Trout Puppet Workshop. (Jan 16, Naomi Woo, conductor)
BMO Night at the Movies presents Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire™ In Concert, with Harry Potter™ soaring across the big screen in high-definition with a live symphony orchestra performing Patrick Doyle’s memorable score. (Mar 4 & 5)
All Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra concerts at the Centennial Concert Hall, 555 Main St.
Manitoba Chamber Orchestra presents Jumpcuts: a montage of new music. It’s a celebration of mostly Canadian music, featuring work by Randolph Peters, Julian Grant, Gabriel Dharmoo, Larry Strachan, and Caitlin BromsJacobs (who has arranged Renaissance works for reed trio). There are no door sales, so purchase tickets ahead. (Mar 8 and 9, Julian Pellicano, conductor, Anne Manson, Music Director, Westminster United Church, 745 Westminster Ave)
The Westminster Concert Organ Series presents Daniel Sañez. Currently Director of Music and Liturgy at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Richmond, Virginia, he has performed throughout the United States, Canada,

Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, and Germany. (Mar 11, Westminster United Church, 745 Westminster Ave)
The Winnipeg Classical Guitar Society continues their International Artist Concert Series with Dale Kavanagh (Germany/Canada) who will be performing at Lorne Watson Hall, Brandon (Jan 28) and at Precious Blood Church, 200 Kenny St (Jan 29). As well, the society’s local artist series "Frets Alive" is back, starting a little bit later than normal but running into the summer. (Check the society’s website for details.) Plus, Cafe Guitar switches back to an in-person (and socially distanced format). Cafe Guitar provides a forum for people to come together and play guitar for each other in an informal setting. All ages welcome. (Feb 20 matinee, Dalnavert Museum Visitor Centre, 61 Carlton St)
Get up to the minute with Groundswell and GS3: Standing Wave Ensemble: Refractions, curated by Gordon Fitzell. Cutting-edge chamber ensemble Standing Wave is celebrating its 31st year of audacious music making. As part of Groundswell’s Anniversary, Standing Wave will present a bold program of new and recently commissioned pieces for ensemble, interactive electronics, and video, including works by Bekah Simms, Nancy Tam, Gordon Fitzell and others. Included will be world premieres by emerging Manitoba composers Kiara Nathaniel and Rebecca Schroeder. (Mar 1, Muriel Richardson Auditorium, Winnipeg Art Gallery, 300 Memorial Blvd)
DANCE
The Royal Winnipeg Ballet has something for those in need of some magic and charm with a bewitching take on The Sleeping Beauty. When the maleficent Carabosse lays a curse on the newborn Princess Aurora that casts her into a century-long slumber, only the power of love can compel her back home. Tchaikovsky’s iconic composition is brought to life in the choreography of Marius Petipa. (Feb 23 to 27, evenings and a matinee. Venue TBA)
Meanwhile, it’s back to the future with Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers and a new commission from Mélanie Demers. This new work will be programmed with Demers’ solo Icône Pop. Internationally acclaimed, Demer’s work has been presented throughout Europe, the Americas, Africa, and
Asia. Her multi-award-winning work is known for its originality, intensity, and complexity. This show features a unique audience experience with performances inside the theatre and “in situ” in the McKim Building’s underground parkade. (Feb 25 and 26, evening, and Feb 27, matinee. All performances will take place at the Rachel Browne Theatre, 211 Bannatyne Ave, unless otherwise noted.)

THEATRE
The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre presents The Lifespan of a Fact, by Jeremy Kareken & David Murrell and Gordon Farrell on the John Hirsch Mainstage. Based on a true seven-year battle between an innovative essayist and a tenacious fact checker, it’s a sharp, thought-provoking, and often hilarious search for truth. A magazine intern has a simple task: check the facts, meet the deadline, end of story. But the facts come up against a famous writer, who’s more interested in the essence of truth. (Feb 9 to March 5, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, 174 Market Ave) Down the road at the Tom Hendry Warehouse, it’s Sea Sick, written and performed by Alanna Mitchell. A prairie girl who’s afraid of water, Mitchell might not be the most obvious person to talk about the ocean, but she’s also an award-winning journalist, and like all good reporters, she follows her curiosity. With hard science and delicate wit, and inspired by an international bestselling book, this play is a cornerstone of The Bridge: A Festival of Ideas. (Mar 2 to 19, Tom Hendry Warehouse, 140 Rupert Ave)
Prairie Theatre Exchange introduces you to Bad Parent by Ins Choi, a co-production with Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre (vAct) and Soulpepper Theatre Company. Norah and Charles are trying to navigate their life as parents of a toddler but are still trying to figure out who they are in relation to their son, to each other, and to the audience in this honest, no-holds-barred portrait of young parents struggling to find their way. (Mar 23 to Apr 10, Prairie Theatre Exchange, 3rd Floor, Portage Place, 393 Portage Ave)
Also at the PTE space, Shakespeare in the Ruins brings something different, a movie of a play shown in a theatre: Macbeth, an Original Feature Film Shot in and around Winnipeg between September and October 2020, Macbeth features more than 40 local actors, and dozens of artists behind the screen. Conceived, directed, and edited by Michelle Boulet and Sarah Constible, this film is inspired by the late 1800s theatre aesthetic of Anton Chekhov, and was shot digitally in black-andwhite. Ray Strachan and Julie Lumsden play the royal couple. (Feb 5 to 13, Prairie Theatre Exchange).
Winnipeg Jewish Theatre presents the Canadian premiere of Caleen Sinette Jennings's Queen's Girl in the World. A chronicle of the misadventures of bright-eyed, brown-skinned Jacqueline Marie Butler, and her sudden transfer from a protective, middle-class late-1950s upbringing in Queens to a progressive, predominantly Jewish private school in Greenwich Village, it’s a comedy with a soundtrack of classic Motown. (Feb 5, 10, 13, evening and matinee performances, Winnipeg Jewish Theatre, Berney Theatre, C 148123 Doncaster St)

On August 1, 1981, popular music changed forever because of MTV. Featuring the music, fashion, and style of Cyndi Lauper, Annie Lennox, Madonna, Tina Turner and many more (Feb 11 to Apr 17. Holiday Libations
Holiday hospitality comes easy with these festive cocktails from the world’s top cocktail pro. Barman James Grant of Edmonton’s Little Hong Kong vaulted to star status among mixologists when he won the prestigious Diageo World Class Bartender of the Year competition this summer. Style Manitoba caught up with James while he was on tour in Toronto. We asked him to offer a couple of drink suggestions for the Yule season.
Winter Martini:
60ml Tanqueray Rangpur Gin
15ml Blanc Vermouth
15ml Fino Sherry
1 dash cardamom bitters
2 dashes orange bitters
Stir all ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a star anise pod.
“A Martini is always a welcome addition to any party, and this one is sure to impress. Winter spices, floral vermouth, and a savoury sherry help showcase the bright lime notes of Tanqueray Rangpur in this robust, refined Martini variation,” says Grant, mentioning that he uses Tanqueray Rangpur for its unique lime hit that complements the spicing component in the recipe. “The drink is bright and fresh, and while it’s different from the classic version, it is definitely in the Martini wheelhouse.”
The drink calls for dashes of both cardamom and orange bitters. While these items may be available at MLCC stores, people can make these at home, he says. “Toast the cardamom pods till you can smell the aroma. Take out the pods and place them in a good quality vodka and let it sit overnight. For orange bitters, try placing a peel into vodka. Using the peel may offer a more bitter note to the drink that differs from using orange zest in the infusion,” he says.
Yuletide Sour:
45ml Ciroc Pomegranate
15ml Creme de Cassis
30ml Fresh Lemon Juice
Shake all ingredients with ice and fine-strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a sprig of rosemary.
“Dark fruit and the winter herbal notes of rosemary come together to create a bright, tart cocktail based on the clean profile of Ciroc Pomegranate,” says Grant, noting that this drink is both festive and refreshing.
“When people think of traditional holiday cocktails, their thoughts typically turn to egg nogs, spiked hot cocoa or cranberry drinks. This Yuletide Sour offers something different that is bright and tart with lots of berry. The Creme de Cassis is a perfect pairing to create a drink that is light and approachable, and really fits the bill for an early evening beverage.”

NOSHING OUT

Winnipeg is home to more restaurants per capita than nearly any other city its size. ‘Peggers celebrate dining with an array of international flavours, culinary excellence and on-trend experiences that make this city one delicious destination. Following are a few notable new entries on the local dining scene as we move into the New Year.
Nola raises the bar
Nola is a new star attraction in the Winnipeg dining firmament. Fronted by chefs Emily Butcher and Mike Del Buono and operated by Burnley Place Hospitality, Nola has taken the city by storm since opening on October 5th. The 50-seat (plus bar) restaurant is located in the well-windowed ground floor corner space at Tache and Marion in the heart of Norwood.
“Nola is all about shared plates with a menu that is fun, simple and West Coast,” says chef Emily Butcher, a former chef de cuisine at deer + almond and a finisher on the latest season of Food Network Canada’s Top Chef Canada. At Nola, Butcher and colleague Del Buono have brought their ‘A’ game with a lot of veggie innovation, fresh seafood and fusion. For example, the Gunpowder Roast Carrots are characteristic of Butcher’s skill with simple vegetable ingredients. She remarks that this dish is among the most ordered. The honey-glazed carrots come with a unique Gunpowder seasoning, whipped feta, pumpkin seed butter and candied pumpkin seeds. Nola’s Maple-Cured Arctic Char with soy-braised veg, wild rice, quinoa, smoked aioli, and scallion relish stands tall among the finest culinary experiences in the city.
“Many of our menu items are nostalgic for me, with ideas coming from the flavours of my childhood,” says Butcher, who grew up in BC. She comments that the sharing menu is a great way to celebrate at the table and for people to get together.
Visit their website www.nolawpg.com for more information.
Tabla Rasa offers more than a blank slate
Tabla Rasa is bringing a taste of the Mediterranean to Winnipeg from its location at 725 Osborne St at Beresford. Opened this past August, the space offers 12 tables in the heart of Riverview’s culinary Mecca. And, according to Manager Erik Thordarson, they also have a couple of tables held in reserve for walk-in customers.
“We are doing Spanish and Mediterranean-inspired tapas and other dishes,” says Thordarson, pointing to inspiration from Spain, Portugal, Italy and even South America. “Our culinary approach is broad but with a Mediterranean vibe. We look to local suppliers and ingredients to help us keep the flavour fresh,” he says, noting that they have been turning to Gimli’s New Iceland Fishery for their Silver Bass and Pickerel. “Our menu changes constantly so we can take advantage of what is fresh and in season. Everything we can do in-house, we do.”
Leading the current menu at Tabla Rasa is the Pickerel Cheek Escabeche with piperade, capers, olives, and sourdough. Popular as well is the BBQ Silver Bass with cumin-lime marinade, butter sauce, and sweet potato Cappelletti. The housemade Cappelletti comes with cauliflower thyme broth, lemon ricotta, cremini mushrooms, sunflower seeds, pine nuts, and chilli oil. Thordarson comments that the Octopus & Chorizo with romesco, hazelnuts, caramelized fennel, tomato and herb oil is another hit, as is the Duck Leg Confit and a Berkshire Pork Chop.
Coming soon will be a new cocktail bar that will offer room for 30 and a patio on the Beresford side.

D+A at EQ3
For those who wonder what the best food or beverage to pair with a leather sectional might be, the answer may be found at the new deer + almond location within the massive 44,000 square foot EQ3 store in Polo Park. D+A at EQ3 opened this December in the middle of EQ3’s recent addition to the Portage Ave shopping centre.
According to General Manager and partner Daniel King, the approach to open the high-end restaurant within a furniture store came from EQ3 CEO Peter Tielmann. “He saw similar pairings in the US that were chic, international and cosmopolitan. This style is what both EQ3 and deer +almond are all about. The match is a perfect fit,” he says.
The bright, open restaurant offers 65 seats, including the coffee bar where a dedicated barista takes beverage service very, very seriously. King reports that the restaurant is just now in the process of obtaining its MLCC permit for liquor sales and expects a list of delightful cocktails to join a slate of well-considered wines as they move forward.
The menu is designed under the hand of deer + almond Executive Chef Mandel Hitzer, one of Winnipeg’s (and Canada's) leading culinary stars. “Nothing is pre-made. For example, our Eggs Benedict is created using a scratch Hollandaise. Just as in the kitchen at our Princess Street location, we look to local ingredients and then create a unique twist to amplify flavour,” he says, inviting people to drop in for a culinary experience that is uncharacteristic of big-store dining.
Modern Electric Lunch
Modern Electric Lunch is a licensed Main Street café opened in the newly refurbished Fortune Block (232 Main St) early in 2021. It's tiny at just 30 seats, but huge in its delivery of classic lunchroom standards such as Reubens and Egg Salad sandwiches. Open 9:00 to 4:00 (Mon-Sun) Modern Electric Lunch has proven to be a mealtime haven for hungry downtown office staff who drop-in, take out or have the kitchen cater for meetings.
The café is a recreation of the original Electric Lunch that occupied the site in the early 1900s. According to General Manager Madeleine Olvera, a restaurant was in the plans during the Fortune Block renovation. When discarded guest checks from the original lunchroom (actually at 234 Main) were discovered behind the walls, the die was cast for a rebirth of the original restaurant.
“What we serve today is elevated comfort foods with a modern take. For example, we have selections for those who are vegan or celiac (gluten-free), and our menu is designed to offer a good assortment for the downtown office crowd,” says Olvera, who mentions that the café operates a scratch kitchen where they make everything in-house.
Today’s menu has changed from 1917 when a couple of ham steaks with fries and two teas cost just 0.60 cents. The present-day menu offers Breakfast Sandwiches (vegan or standard) with smoked gouda and caramelized onion and bacon; a Club with roasted chicken, avocado, mild cheddar and arugula on an onion Hoagie; and a great Beet Salad with arugula, roasted beets, cucumber, house-made whipped dill ricotta, sourdough croutons, roasted hazelnuts, candied oranges and honey shallot dressing.
The coffee program is world-class, with a dedicated professional barista at the helm. According to Olvera, Modern Electric Lunch looks to a third-wave coffee philosophy. The third wave coffee movement considers coffee an artisanal food similar to wine. Purveyors of this form of coffee work to enhance the experience with greater education, connoisseurship, and sensory exploration beyond just a cup of Joe.

& Sanitize Your Home
It’s natural to want to lock everything down during this crisis. When conducted safely, housecleaning services actually improve the health of your home and workplace. So much so that the government deemed cleaning services essential to the population, with the following safety precautions in place: social distancing, washing hands for a specific length of time, wearing a mask and gloves, disinfecting the soles of shoes or wearing shoe covers while using EPA approved cleaning products and methods.
As consumers, we find ourselves in a dilemma: should we maximize our safety measures by preventing anyone other than our immediate family from entering our home or enhance our cleanliness by hiring a professional cleaner to clean and sanitize our home?
You Make the Rules - your home, your rules, more safety efforts. Allow ventilation, wear your own protective equipment, instruct family members to social distance while the cleaner is working, or stay on a level other than the one the cleaner is working on.
Hiring a Cleaning Service During Covid-19 is more important than ever because:
1
Safety: Cleaning professionals have been trained to follow all safety protocols while effectively eliminating germs/viruses with EPA approved cleaning solutions.
2 Peace of Mind: With everything you are required to do like homeschooling and working from home, a professional cleaner will give you peace of mind, knowing that the task is now taken care of.
3 Participate in the solution by making sure your home is kept hygienic, sterilized and spotless by professional cleaners.
Take Time Cleaning staff are well trained and diligently follow cleaning protocols, using EPA tested products proven to kill the Covid-19 virus and 99.9% of all germs.

Your Thoughts
Beautiful autumn issue of Style Manitoba! My wife and I have followed your publication for years and are consistently impressed with its ongoing quality. Celebrating your 25th anniversary is quite the accomplishment! We, like many other Manitobans, have thoroughly enjoyed the excellent editorials and photography Style has brought to readers throughout the years. Thank you for the local content – it’s been fabulous reading about all the people, companies and local happenings profiled on your pages. Style Manitoba is simply the best publication in Manitoba. Here’s to another 25 years of publishing!
Jeremy Westfeld, Winnipeg
Home design in Manitoba has certainly evolved to a whole new level over the years, a fact that was clearly exemplified with Style’s cover story last issue. Harris Builders certainly constructed a spectacular home loaded with innovative engineering, features and style. Thanks for sharing the story in Style, and kudos to the builder for showing Manitobans what is possible within our own province. The homeowners must be thrilled with the result.
Chris Layden, Winnipeg
Congratulations to the team at Style Manitoba on the 25th anniversary of this high quality periodical! Publishing in Manitoba for that many years is no small feat. Glad to see this magazine has flourished throughout that time – it truly offers readers great local content, whether it’s home designs, profiles, recipes or entertainment. Please keep it coming!
Jennifer Ward, Winnipeg
The homes and neighbourhoods coverage in Style Manitoba’s last issue was wonderful – very helpful for those buying a new home or condo, but I was particularly impressed with the home renovations feature (Make Your Mark by Kelly Gray), as I’m currently considering a renovation. White Label Homes, Soma Interiors and all the associated suppliers did a remarkable job on this project. Thanks for sharing this story with your audience – the project featured earns high praise from this reader.
John Anderson, Winnipeg
Thanks for all the great content in Style Manitoba for the past 25 years! It’s wonderful that Winnipeggers have a publication that shows what’s available locally in home design, along with other relevant content on the arts and cultural scene, dining out, profiles and so much more. I hope Style Manitoba continues publishing for many years to come.

Onalee Ames Film Studio is a Winnipeg owned business for those who wish to equip themselves for the professional movie industry. If you want to write, act or just try to find your own creative vibe, this is the place for you. Here, individuals can garner the necessary tools for auditioning and acting in films. Most importantly, Onalee Ames Film Studio promotes changing old narratives and creating new ones. Onalee Ames has worked with over 3000 people and has connected Winnipeg students with LA, Vancouver, and Toronto agents, directors and casting agents.
Here’s what a former grateful student has to say about the studio and its owner…
When Onalee Ames opens the bright pink door to her new studio on Stafford and Yale, I am instantly reminded by the smile on her face that I am in a space where I can let down my guard. I also find myself in a building that many Winnipeggers have been watching the construction of for the past two years.
I barely get through the door and we are negotiating masks and hugs, and immediate tears run down my face. This is the woman who helped change my life. I met her at 12 years old and I am now 27. She taught me to prepare for a career in film, which I now have. She herself has been on quite a journey and is very quick to share.
Onalee is a pioneer. She has managed to create a life that is innately true to her soul and is committed to inspiring others in this city to do the same. There is an Italian disco radio station playing in the background. This
Creating New Narratives
AN INTERVIEW WITH ONALEE AMES
beautifully crafted studio designed by Winnipeg architect Neil Minuk, Onalee’s husband, has managed to create space for two businesses, five children and two dogs.
Onalee immediately offers me a fresh Italian coffee and wants to hear about my travels. She herself has just returned from Italy where she and her family visit two times a year. Tears well in her eyes as she speaks about the aftermath of Covid.
“So many students struggled during Covid, so we did so much more than acting. We literally held each other up. We sold makeup as a group to pay for everyone to come to class so no one would have to quit,” she shares.
I sip my coffee and look above my head at the white glistening snowflakes falling on the giant skylight. Her presence and this space are exactly what I needed upon return to my hometown.
“You know if you do the work, the work will find you.” Words I have lived by.
“I learned how to zoom as soon as the pandemic hit,” Onalee excitedly tells me, along with sharing refreshing stories of her quest to teach all over the world via zoom. Her acting classes are currently held online for a few more months as she is travelling for her career at the beginning of the year. We reminisce about my peers in her class and the parts they have been getting in recent months.
“The film industry is so alive in Winnipeg. The great news is that after all we have been through, convincing parents of young adults to go into film isn’t nearly as hard as it once was.
Currently, Winnipeg is having our biggest year in film to date. We have grown to the point where our infrastructure faces changes to be able to accommodate the demand for talent, both in front and behind the scenes. I had lunch today with a bunch of amazing women committed to this change in our city. I want everyone to know about IATSE Local 856 and 669, the DGC and ACTRA because they help recruit talent in Winnipeg.”
During lockdown, Onalee hosted classes for her students with guests who graciously offered their time to inspire and uplift spirits, such as Oscar winner Steven Bernstein from LA, and directors who came out in droves to help acting students, including Guy Maddin, John Barnard, Noam Gonick, Sean Garrity, and Jason Bourque to name a few. Actor John Voldstad from The Newhart Show in Los Angeles also showed up online.
Famous guests are no strangers to the Winnipeg studio, so I am not surprised by this line-up. I myself was fortunate to work with some of the world’s best actors at the studio, including Gil Bellows, Ryan Pinkston and Clifton Collins Jr, who find the studio when they are in town and offer their time and talent. There are so many days in Los Angeles where even the best classes do not offer the magic Onalee has provided for so many of us in our Winnipeg.
WINTER 2021 | STYLE MANITOBA | 29
Onalee has also opened a writing division in her studio, which she calls The Writers Room. Director Sean Garrity is heading that department and they currently offer The Start to Finish Screenplay Class and So You Want to Write for Film Intro Class. Onalee herself has been writing and directing for the past few years.
“People always tell me to focus on one thing and I just don’t believe that is the right thing for me to do. I am a vibrant person and I need different things to help me creatively. If I waited for an acting career, I would be of no use to anyone because the amount of rejection an actor takes is a phenomenon. You can be the most talented person in the world and think you are never going to get there, so I bring other successes to my life to balance it out.”
She gets up to sing a bit of a song by Doja Cat and dances around. Her infectious spirit has inspired my career and there are so many more actors who will bloom as long as she is teaching in our city.
Onalee will be writing her own column for Style Manitoba in the next issue to inform our community about the film industry here in Manitoba.
“I love Style Manitoba. They celebrate our city and share success stories. Winnipeg is full of talent. Imagine someone might be reading this right
now and will have a career in film because they picked up this magazine.”
In fact, I wrote this article because it would be a shame to keep this to ourselves.

Shear Comfort
BY KELLY GRAY
Winnipeg’s North End is home to a lot of tradition. From bakeries to specialty stores to bowling alleys, this section of the city is home to a wealth of multigenerational businesses that have helped shape the fabric of our community. Wonderful World of Sheepskin is one of these businesses. Located today at 250 Dufferin Ave, the Schultz family has been crafting furs and sheepskin magic in the North End for close to 80 years.
According to Myron Schultz, the business his grandfather started in the 1930s was originally located on Selkirk Ave. The company moved to its present home on Dufferin Ave in 1996. Today, Wonderful World of Sheepskin is unique, thanks to a manufacturing facility alongside their boutique in the same building. This on-site manufacturing facility allows the company to offer a full circle of service with a product range that includes footwear, outerwear, plush toys, and automotive specialties, as well as cleaning tools and home décor items, along with personal care and comfort items.
“Our wool dusters have become an industry standard in the hotel sector. Housekeepers have long recognized the quality of these tools surpass everything else on the market,” says Myron Schultz, mentioning that these janitorial items came on board in 1969
and were introduced to the janitorial industry in the US.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, sales of slippers spiked as people sought out ways to make themselves more comfortable at home. Available for men, women, and children, these slippers are renowned for their comfort, style and durability.
“Returning customers will come in looking for a replacement after years of wear and buy several more pairs as gifts. We know we are doing things right,” says Schultz. Similarly, as people spent more time outdoors last year during the winter, mitts, gloves and boots were all in high demand.
“We are all about comfort, and our line is filled with items that make a difference in how our customers go about day-to-day tasks. For example, we make sheepskin insoles for cold weather boots, and sheepskin steering
wheel covers to keep your hands warm while driving. We also have seat belt covers and seat skins to take some cold out of Winnipeg winters,” he says.
The company also offers wash mitts, car dashboard dusters and chamois, as well as other car care items. For personal care, Schultz suggests sheepskin wheelchair pads to help limit pressure sores. In addition to soft crutch covers, they manufacture elbow, knee, and heel protectors, as well as forearm covers and specialized slippers.
The product range extends to bedding with wool mattress covers, comfy sheepskins and a broad assortment of outerwear that includes hats, gloves, mitts and jackets, as well as earmuffs. Looking for leg warmers? Wonderful World of Sheepskin will create an item to your specs. They have even produced coats for dogs to keep them comfortable in the winter. All are produced in the company’s tradition of manufacturing excellence.
“We source the majority of our skins from Australia and New Zealand with some tanned in Europe. Since the beginning, the business has been based on quality. And today, when customers come in, they know we will still be here when they need a new pair of slippers, or a relative requires a soft surface on a wheelchair. We are part of the tradition that is the North End, and we are proud of this history as we move forward.”
Schultz invites people to visit them in-store at 250 Dufferin Ave or online at www.Worldofsheepskin.com to discover the comfort of quality in a Winnipeg tradition.

by Miriam Toews
by Quentin Mills-Fenn
Nobody toggles between comedy and drama like Miriam Toews, who shifts from screwball scenes to serious moments seemingly without effort. Her latest novel is narrated by nine-year-old Swiv, and it’s up to her to hold her family together: her outlandish grandmother on her last legs; and her actor mother, very pregnant and filled with rage, which might not be due to baby Gord. It’s a novel filled with sharp observations on how families work, even the most offbeat ones.
The Invention of Sicily: A Mediterranean History (Verso)
by Jamie Mackay
This is something remarkable: a brief, fascinating, well-informed history from ancient Greeks to modern-day politics. Sicily has been conquered over and over (Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans), ruled by the French and the Spanish, and controlled by Naples and Rome and by the Mafia. Far from being on the periphery of Italy, Jamie Mackay argues that Sicily is central to history, a gateway between Europe, Africa, and Asia. This is a terrific introduction to a place, and a people, like no other.
What Strange Paradise (McClelland & Stewart)
by Omar El Akkad
A creaky boat overloaded with migrants and economic refugees flounders off the shore of an unnamed Mediterranean island, and only nine-year-old Amir survives in this powerful novel by journalist/ novelist Omar El Akkad, author of the bestselling American War. The narrative alternates between Amir’s time on the claustrophobic boat and his time on the island, where a local girl risks everything to help. Thrilling, heartbreaking, and thought-provoking, winner of the 2021 Giller Prize.

BRIAN ENO
Rams – Original Soundtrack
Album (Opal)
Reviewing a film soundtrack without seeing the movie is a tricky business, even when the composer, Brian Eno, is not tethered to writing descriptive music. Scoring for a biography of German industrial designer Dieter Rams, whose elegant work for Braun and other companies vindicates his “less, but better” motto, is wonderful symmetry for a musician keen on the lean, yet this music is neither especially demonstrative 0r insinuative, and arrives surprisingly short on Eno’s subtle magnetism. Instead, there are brief, unresolved sketches for keyboard and guitar. Some are pretty, at least, like the electronic lullabies of “Designer Piano,” with its synthetic kalimbas, and “A Warm Sweet Bed,” while the distorted electric guitar in “Bright Clouds of Metal” could well be – more symmetry – a Braun shaver.
TANGERINE DREAM
Rubycon (Virgin)
A wide swath of Berlin electronic band Tangerine Dream’s output was gathered recently for an 18-disc box, In Search of Hades. Virgin has since released key albums from the period, in impressively remastered, budget-priced editions with extra tracks. Rubycon, from 1975, is the best launchpad, the keyboard music of Edgar Froese, Christophe Franke and Peter Baumann so shapely it defies the skeptical notion of three technicians fiddling hopefully with switches and filters. What begins cavernously, with echoed drones and haunted voices, soon accelerates to breakneck pace, with wedges of backward piano for punctuation and Froese’s guitar for direction. An added, extended version of the introduction generates further drama.
TERJE RYPDAL
Terje Rypdal (ECM)
After too many years as forbiddingly expensive imports, Norwegian guitarist/composer Terje Rypdal’s first three albums for ECM are available domestically. His selftitled debut from 1971 anticipates the incisive guitarist, ambitious composer and bold improviser. The 15-minute “Electric Fantasy” is a bracing introduction to all three, with female voice and twinned flutes high in the storm. “Rainbow” has high, keening lines for flute and English horn set over quivering guitar. “Keep it Like That – Tight” is taut Miles Davis funk, slow and slinky, with wild soprano saxophone and stabbing electric piano. Rypdal digs in so deeply with hard, chopping rhythm guitar that its 12 minutes are almost done before he cuts loose. Always, however, this music is weighted and reined carefully – chamber music, virtually, with the thrill of spontaneity.

enhanced therapy podcast Curious about MDMA-Assisted Therapy? Enhanced Therapy PODCAST Conversations with leading experts in the field enhancedtherapy.ca LISTEN@
MDMA-Assisted Therapy is Coming to Town: Soon-ish
BY DAREK DAWDA, CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST
This is not a joke. New rigorous research is showing that the hippy love-drug MDMA (aka Ecstasy), when combined with psychotherapy, is a powerful agent for healing trauma. And the word is spreading fast. BBC News, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, VOX, CBC, and all other major news outlets are reporting on this groundbreaking research.
One year after treatment, two-thirds of 90 participants with severe PTSD no longer had PTSD.
The largest study to date showed that MDMA-Assisted Therapy is not only safe but also more effective in treating PTSD than any other existing treatment. One year after treatment, two-thirds of 90 participants with severe PTSD no longer had PTSD. This is truly unprecedented, and if these results hold up with further research, we might have an amazing tool to treat trauma. Some go as far as calling this a revolution in mental health treatment, but more research is needed before such assertions can be unequivocally made.
Trauma is notoriously difficult to treat because the traumatic memories are loaded with fear, which naturally makes us avoid those memories. And as we all know, those unprocessed memories continue to debilitate us, causing all sorts of problems on an ongoing daily basis, including depression, relationship dysfunction, substance abuse, and in extreme cases aggression or suicidality.
Each MDMA dosing session is followed by several integrations sessions, specifically designed to bridge the gap between the altered MDMA state and regular daily life. Integration is deemed to be at least as important a part of successful treatment as the MDMA experience itself.
MDMA results in a release of the hormone Oxytocin, which is responsible for social bonding.
MDMA-Assisted Therapy is also being currently studied for other conditions with some promising initial results, including helping couples heal their relationships. In addition to calming down the fear centre, MDMA results in a release of the hormone Oxytocin, which is responsible for social bonding. Oxytocin gives couples a window in which to connect and communicate more openly and with care. Psychotherapy then helps integrate these insights and experiences into everyday life, resulting in more openness, compassion and overall happiness and harmony.
The good news is that MDMA is used only 1 to 3 times during the therapy, which is enough to create lasting change.
therapy will become available around 2023, maybe even 2024. Between now and then there might be some rare opportunities to obtain MDMA Therapy through Health Canada’s Special Access Program, but this route is in its untested infancy at present.
We are working hard to bring this therapy to people in need in a professional, safe, and effective way, once it goes through the process of approval by Health Canada.
I am a part of Enhanced Therapy Institute, a professional Manitoba group that is preparing to provide MDMAAssisted Therapy when it becomes legal and available. We have done the training, we have the facilities, we have the support and guidance from the leaders in the field, and we have years of experience treating trauma and relationships using traditional psychotherapy methods. We are working hard to bring this therapy to people in need in a professional, safe, and effective way, once it goes through the process of approval by Health Canada.
the MDMA-Assisted Therapy process.
What the drug MDMA does is calm down the brain’s fear centre, which allows access to and reprocessing of traumatic memories during the MDMA-Assisted Therapy process. The therapy itself is often called Integration Therapy, as it is designed to integrate the insights and gains achieved during the MDMA sessions into everyday life.
The good news is that MDMA is used only 1 to 3 times during the therapy, which is enough to create lasting change. This is starkly different from most other psychotropic drugs. The effects of MDMA Therapy also seem to last a long time. Moreover, people seem to be showing spontaneous improvement in well-being even after the end of the treatment. That’s why this treatment is said to have the potential to not only reduce symptoms but to actually heal trauma.
At this point, MDMA-Assisted Therapy is not legal or available.
At this point, MDMA-Assisted Therapy is not legal or available, aside from a few rare research opportunities (no such opportunities are available in Manitoba at present). The FDA and Health Canada approval process is currently in its final stages, and the best guess is that this

Everyone is unique. Our body composition is different. We have different strengths and weaknesses. This means that each of us requires a plan tailored to our individual health and wellness needs. Body Measure does just that.
This unique wellness facility - the only one of its kind in North Americaopened its door three years ago and is now in the process of expanding its facility and the services it offers to meet the demands of a growing clientele.
Located at 1086 St Mary’s Road, Body Measure offers the latest scientific technology to analyze and treat existing health concerns, as well as promote preventative healthcare.
“We provide access to hospital grade equipment and treatment for needs that are not being met by the existing healthcare system,” says Melina Elliott, co-founder of Body Measure. Elliott holds an MSc in community health and has carved out a career focused on wellness of the aging. Her partner, Erica Henderson, is a certified X-Ray technologist who has worked in the healthcare industry for 30 years. Both are certified obesity counsellors. Rounding out the team is facility director Dr. Blair Henderson, board certified radiologist; registered dietician Angela Martens; technical specialist Hunter Logozar; Obesity Medicine doctor, Dr. K Warriach, and executive assistant Ali Ruest.
Body Measure treatment rooms house the latest medical equipment that identify and address existing health concerns and ongoing health issues. This includes Dexa, which provides your body composition, bone

health, lean mass and body fat; KORR Metacheck, which measures the body’s metabolic rate and FibroScan, which provides readings for liver fat.
Customized plans are offered in three main areas: Weight Management, Urinary Incontinence and Fitness. Weight management clients receive a personalized plan based on their body composition. It includes an RMR test that tells them how many calories they need to be consuming to achieve their weight loss goals. The plan seeks to reduce body fat while limiting muscle loss, and progress is monitored to see how much fat is being lost as opposed to just weight. Ongoing support from the certified obesity counsellors, obesity medicine doctor and registered dietician contributes to client success stories.
Urinary incontinence is treated with Emsella, a device used to help those who suffer from urinary incontinence caused by weakening of the pelvic floor muscles due to childbirth, menopause or aging.
“Emsella uses high intensity focused electromagnetic technology to stimulate the entire pelvic floor,” Elliott explains. “A treatment takes 28 minutes and you don’t even have to take off your clothes. Six sessions over three weeks strengthens the pelvic floor muscles. No more worries about coughing, sneezing or running.”
“This particular treatment is geared toward women whose quality of life is affected by incontinence but can also
help increase sexual satisfaction,” Henderson adds. “A stronger pelvic floor improves blood flow, which improves their confidence and helps them enjoy a more satisfying sexual experience.”
Body Measure has added two new treatments targeting the 35-65 age group: Emsculpt Neo helps build muscle and destroys fat; and Thermage, a skin tightening procedure, decreases fine lines and smooths skin.
“Through intense electromagnetic energy along with radio frequency, Emsculpt Neo can decrease body fat on average by 30 percent, and increase muscle by 25 percent,” Henderson says. “It can target problem areas such as abs, glutes and thighs. And there’s zero down time.”
Sessions take only 30 minutes; with four to six sessions recommended 5 to 10 days apart. Tangible results can be seen after the sessions.
Thermage reduces fine lines and wrinkles and loose skin on the face, around the eyes and any other area of the body. The treatment increases collagen production for up to six months, so a single treatment can smooth and tighten skin anywhere on your body, including arms and stomach. “Because it builds collagen, additional treatments aren’t required for a year or two,” Henderson points out.

Non-invasive skincare & treatments
Anew beauty business has just opened in Winnipeg, launched by Amy Atkinson. Located at 3549 Pembina Hwy, SKIIN by Amy is Atkinson’s dream for people who want to achieve beautiful skin without going the invasive way with fillers, Botox, or laser treatments that can put you out of commission for a few days to weeks.
SKIIN By Amy is all about treating people’s skin with non-invasive treatments and medical grade skincare, to achieve not only beautiful skin but boost clients’ confidence as well.
“Skin has been my passion since I was a young girl mixing up my own concoctions in my parents kitchen, using any ingredient in the fridge or cupboards that I thought I could make a face mask with to help my skin look prettier. Seeing girls in magazines with beautiful skin is what made me so passionate about the beauty industry. At age 12 I thought if they can have skin like that, then why can’t I? “
Years later, Winnipeg was graced with the opening of Sephora, and Atkinson jumped at the chance to work there. “Once I did, there was no looking back,” she says. “I knew my passion for the skin and beauty industry was my calling. I loved working there, but wanted to broaden my skills and knowledge about skin, so I enrolled at an aesthetics school in Winnipeg. During my school year in aesthetics, I was offered a full-time position at a new med spa in Winnipeg, where I received hands-on training.” From there, Atkinson went to Toronto to further her education and skills. That was when her love for small business started. “I ran that med spa and learned so much from doing everything as a manager and employee, minus the bookkeeping,” she notes. “Looking back now, it definitely gave me a jumpstart in understanding how to run a small business, and for that I am very grateful.”
Unfortunately, the company succumbed to the pandemic and was sold. During lockdown, Atkinson dove right into taking personal development, business and skincare courses.
“What I learned that year, I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world,” she says. “It gave me the strength to open my own business, as scary as that can be, especially during a pandemic. I’ve learned we are the creators of our reality, and I love the business I have created for others to experience,” she adds.
“I chose the name SKIIN because I’m part Scandinavian and because my focus is on improving people’s skin,” explains Atkinson. “I believe there is no technology to replace the power of the hands. I am a firm believer in facial massage here at SKIIN; it is one of my main focuses when my patients come for their treatments. Massage stimulates collagen production, stimulates the removal of toxins
and brings oxygen to your skin. It is also relaxing, and in today’s stressful times, I want my clients to relax but also get results. At the end of the day, truly caring for my patients is at the core of my business,” she notes.
“Medical grade facials are what people are looking for today. We’re living longer and have a better quality of life. It’s easy to say yes to non-invasive treatments. I’ve immersed myself so much in the industry that I’m familiar with all the latest products and techniques. And while the pandemic poses issues, it’s safety first, beauty second.”
Beauty may be only skin deep, but for many people, looking and feeling their best makes a huge difference to their self-image. “I find it the most rewarding job to be part of building someone’s confidence,” concludes Atkinson.

Feel Younger Through Regular Exercise
By Julie Germaine
Engaging in regular physical activity is the first and most important step in achieving your fitness goals. If you want to lose belly fat to regain your figure, enhance your mood for improved quality of life, or crave the satisfaction of strangers underestimating your age, structuring your weekly routine to allow time for fitness is a must. My clients have heard me say repeatedly that resistance training is the fountain of youth! Don’t believe me? Here is a run-down of some of the fantastic ways that physical activity slows the aging process.
1My favourite form of exercise is WEIGHT TRAINING (2 to 5 times per week, 20 to 45 minutes) because it releases feel-good endorphins, strengthens your muscles and bones, and builds your metabolism. Osteoporosis is more likely to develop as the body weakens, so at any age it is beneficial to take up lifting. If you’re not comfort able amongst bodybuilders at the gym, then sneak
into an aerobics class that includes some resistance training, or try some of my free callisthenics home workouts at www.juliegermaine.com/swj
2By incorporating MOBILITY
TRAINING (2 to 4 times per week, 10 to 60 minutes) you will prevent tightening and permanent shortening of the muscles and tendons that naturally happens with time. This can put you at higher risk for injury and chronic pain, and can also cause conditions like hunchback posture, which gives you the appearance of being elderly. You could take a yoga class a few times each week, or simply end every workout with ten minutes of relaxing stretches.
3Your mind gets to take a break while your body runs the show during all FAT-BLASTING EXERCISE, so you can enjoy a leaner body and healthier heart, along with a quicker brain. It has been proven that memory lapses due to age are significantly reduced with the inclusion of an effective fitness program.
Try doing short, intense workouts to age gracefully, feel good, and live better.

StreetSide Developments offers balanced living in Winnipeg’s Sage Creek
BY MARGAUX BRAUND
In Winnipeg’s highly desirable, nature-inspired community of Sage Creek, StreetSide Developments continues its legacy of designing affordable multi-family homes with its latest collection of modern townhomes, Flora Condominiums on Grey Heron Drive.
Designed to encompass modern living in a family-oriented atmosphere, Flora Condominiums offers homebuyers an opportunity to own property in one of Southeast Winnipeg’s most indemand communities, even for those watching their price point.
“Flora Condominiums offers an affordable option to own in this area, and we’ve seen a lot of excitement from buyers who can own a brand-new townhome in Sage Creek for under $400,000,” says Streetside's Kelly Roach.
Sage Creek is known to be a walkable community, with an abundance of amenities. With plenty of parks, playgrounds, and trails, this neighbourhood is appealing for families of all sizes and ages.
StreetSide Developments launched Flora Condominiums in May 2021, which was modelled after their soldout community Couture West Condominiums in Ridgewood West. Their 3-bedroom floor plan models include The Dahlia and The Cardinal—offering 1,152 to 1,296 square feet of modern living space, two-and-a-half bathrooms, an optional patio, and a double detached garage, which are all accessible by two private entries per unit. Each
model also offers a lower-level optional development for extra living space.
“Flora Condos have been extremely popular among homebuyers since we’ve launched,” says Roach. “We have already sold over 75% of the units so far and are looking forward to launching our new townhome models at Flora North Condominiums.”
The floor plans have been thoughtfully designed with modern lifestyles in mind. On the main floor, the open concept living room, kitchen, and dining area create an open, airy atmosphere, while providing ideal space for entertaining. Upstairs, three sizeable bedrooms offer plenty of space for a growing family, including a main bedroom that can accommodate a king-sized bed and includes an ensuite bathroom with glass shower.
Each Flora townhome model includes modern and elegant finishes. Quartz countertops can be found in the kitchen and bathrooms, luxury vinyl plank flooring throughout the main floor offers both beauty and resilience, and thick, soft carpet areas make for cozy and comfortable spaces upstairs. Oversized windows throughout each model provide plenty of natural light to brighten up each space.
Homebuyers will enjoy a private backyard, with landscaping in both the front and backyard completed at the time of construction, including an optional deck in the backyard. In addition to the dedicated outdoor space, property management also takes care of front yard maintenance,
including snow removal in winter. For those concerned about their furry friends, Flora Condominiums is also a pet-friendly community.
Coming soon, Flora North Condominiums is a continuation of StreetSide’s well thought-out floor plans and design but with an even more affordable price-point and a variation on the layout. Starting at under $300,000, these 2-bedroom, multi-level townhomes offer a great opportunity for co-buyers or growing families to own in Sage Creek. Their multi-level layout make it a perfect opportunity for those who enjoy a bit more privacy within their homes, or someone who is looking to rent out the lower level.
A display suite is currently under construction at Flora Condominiums and is set to be open for viewing in February 2022. In the meantime, anyone looking for more information can visit floracondos.ca or contact Averie Hill & Stephanie Childerhose, Qualico Realty Services (Manitoba)Ltd. at flora@qualico.com

The purpose-built 42-storey tower features 395 luxury rental suites, a wealth of amenities and easy access to the city’s leading cultural establishments. 300 Main offers one, two, and three-bedroom luxury residences that look out to the most impressive views Winnipeg has to offer.
The overarching concept is one of true urban living that celebrates an upscale downtown lifestyle. Rents start at $1910 for a one-bedroom and move up to $2125 for an entry two-bedroom apartment. Upper floor premier threebedroom units will be available soon as the building nears completion.
What’s on offer? Select apartments feature dens, and balconies, while all units showcase in-suite laundry, and massive 7.5-foot windows that capture sweeping views and gen-
erously bathe interiors in natural light. Residents enjoy luxury vinyl plank flooring, stainless steel appliances and quartz countertops in packages that are highly contemporary with well-considered layouts.
There is more. For tenants with pets, there is a dedicated outdoor recreation area and an indoor pet spa. For those looking for outdoor space, 300 Main features a 40th-floor terrace – at the highest point in the city - for tenant use. This captivating, shared tenant space offers outdoor fireplaces and access to a viewing lounge, games room and a bookable dining room. There is another outdoor area off the second level where tenants will find BBQs, pizza ovens and fireplaces. The building is also attached to downtown Winnipeg’s lengthy interior walkway system, making a run out for necessities or a meal an easy affair that doesn’t require a jacket or winter boots.
According to Jeff Lukin, Artis REIT’s Director of Marketing, much consideration went into the plans to create an amenity-rich luxury apartment concept downtown.
“The idea was to create a space that really brought people together and built community. This is why we designed patios, games rooms, and outdoor communal areas to complement the private apartment spaces. We listened to what the market was telling us people wanted. There is secure bike storage, underground parking, and commercial businesses that add to the mix,” he says, mentioning that Goodlife Fitness is located (now open) adjacent to the apartment tower at 330 Main, with Earl’s relocating their long-established Main Street restaurant near the Forks to the ground level of the new building.

Clean lines, innovative features and a contemporary colour palette are behind the design beauty of a recent Fort Garry renovation done by Winnipeg’s Harwood Design Builders. Well-known in the local market as a multi-national awardwinner, Harwood is tops in the upper tier renovation and new home market with a portfolio that shows masterpiece after masterpiece.
“Our concept delivers quality over anything else," says Harwood Design Builders’ principal Wayne Sage, a 40year veteran builder who sports a list of remarkable accomplishments that includes everything from sailing yachts to Whistler mansions to 20 years in the high-end Winnipeg market. “We don’t cut corners in anything we do. This approach extends from the initial design to the workmanship from our team, which is simply the best in the industry.”
Sage reports that their customers tend to be discriminating in terms of home design. The house on South Drive in Fort Garry is a perfect case in point. Harwood's team took an older midcentury residence, gutted it to the studs and breathed new life into the ageing décor. For this particular project, Harwood brought in S3 Interior Design, a company they have partnered with many times.

contemporary in its approach. According to Sage, they completely reconsidered the interior, creating spaces such as a home office that can also be used as a spare bedroom with a custom hidden Murphy bed. The design offered a plan that brought the home up to the current code on the same footprint.
“We do just about everything in-house. This in-house aspect is a key point in how we differentiate ourselves in the market. Many of our competitors are project managers that typically hire and schedule trades. At Harwood, our craftspeople are the ones doing the work,” says Sage, mentioning that many of his team members have been on board with the company for over 15 years.
Elements of the project such as security and automation, glazing, doors and trim, as well as central vacuum and lighting, were outsourced to companies that Sage describes as leaders in their fields.
"On our projects, only the very best is good enough. This approach is our starting point,” he says, commenting that carpentry and cabinetry, drywall and forming are all handled by Harwood’s highly skilled in-house crew.
Manufactured items such as hardwood interior doors and trim for the South Drive residence were sourced from Winnipeg-based Windsor Plywood. This business is known as one of the best locations for standard and exotic wood products, and they specialize in doorway solutions.

as much as eight times stronger than PVC. Fiberglass windows are also more energy-efficient, thanks to a much lower thermal conductivity than many other materials. This greater energy efficiency allowed the designers to enhance the amount of glass while still keeping the structure eco-friendly.
Building automation also helps to keep the structure within energy guidelines. Installed by Advance Electronics, systems allow for window coverings, lighting, and HVAC to be operated remotely. Advance also installed security and interior sound systems, while Vacuflo Manitoba provided the equipment for the central vacuum system.
Harwood always turns to Fort Rouge Glass for mirrors and shower doors. “We have been using Fort Rouge Glass for things like shower doors and railings for more than 15 years because they know their products and demand quality just like us. On this job, they provided shower doors and mirrors where the frames delivered design consistency. They
also supplied the custom glass for the open view stairwells,” he says.
Robinson Lighting was another supplier to the project that helped take the design to higher heights. For instance, the sumptuous bath areas offer unique wall sconces that deliver a torchlight ambiance to the space. forward with similar pieces that light the kitchen counters to help create design consistency between the areas.
Harwood’s approach does not skimp on details. Important to their quality is the fit and finish of the total package. “It all starts with a meeting with our designer where we discuss goals and budget. We then measure and model the entire house and build this into a digital program where we can offer full 3D modeling, which allows clients to see things like the type of sunlight coming into bedroom windows or how much room an entrance hallway offers.”
The touches that are the characteristic hallmark of Harwood Design Builders are throughout the South Drive home. While the kitchen features quartz counters and walnut cabinetry, it also uses an articulated water faucet above the gas range to make pouring a kettle or pot full of water an easy task. Above the kitchen counters, Sage and his crew placed a set of custom vertical
wine racks that blend well with the wood cabinetry. In the shower, workers fitted a marble seat that is an extension of the lustrous stone bathroom floor. The same beautiful marble is used as a footing surface for the soaking tub. In the front hall, there is a wood-accented cubby. Ideal
to hang coats and hats, the cubby also offers a comfortable place to sit and put on boots and shoes.
According to Sage, getting it right on details is part of good communication with clients. “When people speak, we listen. Then we guide

Here in Canada, we contribute a lot of greenhouse gasses to the environment. We are among world leaders in this regard, taking 5th place in per capita emissions ahead of China, Russia and the UK. Our government is working to get this heavy and inefficient use of fossil fuels under control. Programs such as the recently announced Canada Greener Homes Grant targets the building sector, a group responsible for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions in the country.
The Canada Greener Homes Grant will help homeowners make their homes more energy-efficient, grow domestic green supply chains, and fight climate change. Grant participants are eligible for up to $5,600 total (up to $5000 for eligible upgrade work and up to $600 towards energy audit costs) under the initiative. Manitobans have been keen on the program, and many have reaped the rewards. A great example of the program's efficacy is a recent project in Winnipeg’s St. James / Assiniboia neighbourhood. Here, prairieHOUSE Performance and Duxton Windows & Doors supported the homeowners to dramatically upscale the residence’s environmental envelope and provide a more contemporary overall appearance in a classic mid-century modern design.
According to Gio Robson, principal with prairieHOUSE Performance (www.prairiehouse.ca), it all starts with registration for the Canada Greener Homes Grant.
“Homeowners must apply for the program and choose a company to perform an energy evaluation to determine the energy upgrade opportunities in the structure,” says Robson, mentioning that total costs

run around $700 for the two required audits, of which $600 may be rebated back to the homeowner. “We offer unbiased, science-based advice that creates a roadmap for energy efficiency upgrade opportunities. This advice allows the homeowner to make an informed decision on purchases for windows, doors, air sealing and insulation, as well as other items such as non-fossil-fuel systems for space and water heating. The goal is greater energy efficiency, in-home comfort and preparedness for climate change.”
Aynsley Dueck of Duxton Windows & Doors tells Style Manitoba that their client was already renovating with Duxton’s products though Brako Building Concepts.
“We adjusted their quote with Brako Building Concepts, our dealer, who worked very closely with them to establish the aesthetic and performance details, and to help them get the grant. We manufactured tripleglazed fibreglass windows with a double Low-E and argon fill to allow the homeowner to obtain the maximum grant per window. Fibreglass windows have more glass and less frame than styles such as PVC. Less frame means less heat loss. Duxton Windows are also available in a range of colours. We provided a bronze colour accent to the inside frames to complement the rich oak interior trim,” she says, adding that on the window's exterior, they selected Midnight Blue, a colour that was similar to the original.
The doors were also colour matched, and a sealed glass unit was installed to update the old twin-door design. “Doors feature multi-point locking. This system ensures a tight fit in the frame, with multiple locks holding the door sealed tightly against drafts.
At the rear of the property, Duxton added more glazing. They also added structural supports hidden inside the new window, in a unique situation where the old window was supporting the roof. Again, more triple-glazed argon-filled glass and less frame worked to enhance the energy envelope, delivering more light and view to the property owners.
Dueck remarks that the homeowners were taken by how quiet their home had become once the job was complete. The new Energy Star triple glazing and state-of-the-art door systems effectively shut out exterior noise. More importantly, the new highefficiency windows and doors retooled the mid-century bungalow to modern energy standards and earned their client a considerable rebate from The Canada Home Energy Grant.

Here are some of our top tips to help you save energy and money in your kitchen:
Cosentino knows surfaces. From countertops to flooring to bathrooms to interior treatments and exterior cladding, Cosentino has natural and manufactured stone products and tile that meet current trends and set new directions in design.
Cosentino Winnipeg General Manager, Scott MacKenzie, points to Dekton and Sensa products as good examples of the innovations on offer at the facility at 200-3020 Red Fife Road in the Brookside Industrial Park. Dekton is a sintered stone, ultra-compact and high-performance surface that mirrors qualities found in natural and manufactured stone products.
“It's ideal for counters, floors, wall and shower uses, as well as on exteriors,” says MacKenzie. “Dekton’s multiple application capabilities take it above and beyond many products. For example, Dekton can be used in settings like steam showers, and counters made using this material can handle hot pans without marking. With a manufactured product, there is a far broader range of colours and artistic attributes that can be built-in,” he says, noting that designers love the product for its creative options.
“Dekton’s performance also allows for thinner thicknesses, an attribute that makes it perfect for interior and exterior wall surfaces where the fit can be a challenge.”
In natural stone, Cosentino is leading the market with Sensa, a granite and quartzite with special stainresistant protection. According to MacKenzie, it’s typical for granite surfaces to require sealing by fabricators after installation, and then again every year. With Sensa, the granite comes to the customer already sealed and has a warranty for 15 years against challenges like staining.
“Sensa is a durable, trouble-free solution for those who love the look and performance of granite without the maintenance.”
Cosentino continues to excite the market with innovative new products such as Silestone’s new Ethereal Collection. This marble-inspired group
Beauty meets performance
consists of four colours: Ethereal Dusk, Ethereal Haze, Ethereal Glow, and Ethereal Noctis, designed to recreate the dreamlike beauty of the sky. Each shade offers deep, fine veining on a white foundation. The Ethereal collection is the result of HybriQ+, an exclusive technology developed for Silestone by Cosentino.
HybriQ+, launched in 2020, is a qualitative leap in the evolution of the brand. It is a new production process characterized by the company’s commitment to the environment, the circular economy and sustainable management. The manufacturing for Silestone with HybriQ+, in addition to Cosentino’s environmental milestones, uses 99% recycled water with no spillage, and 100% renewable electric energy, and a minimum of 20% of recycled raw materials in its composition.
Cosentino Winnipeg has remained open during the COVID-19 pandemic, with customers asked to call for an appointment at their facility. “At any given time, we have over 2,500 slabs stocked in our distribution warehouse. The huge assortment allows us to show actual full-size slabs to our customers. This type of selection is a unique service that we’re able to offer that our competitors do not,” says MacKenzie, noting that the location offers a 4000-square-foot showroom, a 20,000 square-foot warehouse, a sample room, and a space for continuing education and events. The site even has an outdoor kitchen concept showing Dekton’s outdoor capabilities and a ventilated wall façade display.
MacKenzie invites prairie-based trades, designers, architects and the public to investigate the advantages Cosentino has on offer. Visit www.cosentino.com for more information.

End of the Spectrum
What side are you on? This season’s lighting is all about polar opposites. Where once transitional pieces brought together the contemporary and classic, current fixtures are choosing to go far right into formal, or the opposite end to modern.
This Artcraft fixture is a good example of lighting that leans further off transitional to a more traditional look. The company’s Harmony Collection features a mix of black and satin brass finishes, along with multiple pendent sizes for different areas of the home. This look is also keeping in line with the current trend of “dressing up” casual spaces and open floor plans, particularly in home layouts that do not have formal dining rooms.
On the other side of the spectrum are highly contemporary pieces that border on ultra-modern. Think exposed bulbs, varied shapes, muted finishes, and swirling LED constructs.
One finish that transcends all styles is black, which is particularly hot for bathroom lighting fixtures. For fixtures in other areas of the home, black is also being paired with satin brass, satin nickel, or polished chrome for depth and distinction. However, soft gold is coming up quickly behind this distinct finish to possibly become next season’s favourite metal.
Whether you’re on the formal side, or like it a little more modern, Super-Lite’s showroom offers a wide variety of shapes, models, metals, and finishes to put your space on the right side of the spectrum.

With a stove enclosed in tile – creating physical separation from the countertops – this kitchen was missing key functionality and made daily cooking cumbersome. Not to mention the outdated design desperately needed a makeover. To improve functionality and update the look, the homeowners turned to Les Beaton of Beaton Construction and Lisa-Maria Warren-Dunitz, designer with Kitchen Craft.
With a vision of clean lines and warm tones with a hint of industrial, the brick wall was maintained as a feature element and choices were thoughtfully made to accent the brick colours. WarrenDunitz selected Kitchen Craft's Summit cabinet doors in a mix of complementary bamboo and gunmetal blue-stained maple. Stainless steel and glass doors from Element by Whitewood, available through Kitchen Craft, have a vertical lift mechanism for a modern touch with easy access.
“We chose the colours and style of the cabinets very carefully. The flat Summit door style was the perfect choice, allowing the colours to be the feature,” says Warren-Dunitz. “The bamboo cabinet is quite a warm colour and the wood tones mix very well with the stainless.”
Kitchen Craft customized the cabinetry to be consistent in size, thickness and moulding. Porcelain countertops and a unique farmhouse-style top-mount vault sink by Kohler complete the look of this now functional and beautiful kitchen.
Home is where the heart is. So if your home is being renovated, it's natural to feel vulnerable and exposed.
“Renovations are a personal journey and inviting someone into your home to change your environment is not something to take lightly,” says Kris Hodgson, retail sales manager for Curtis Carpets. “It is our mission to make this journey as enjoyable and stress free as possible.”
Curtis Carpets has been a fixture in Winnipeg's building and renovation scene for over 40 years. With a wide selection and more exclusive products than any other flooring store in Manitoba, the company can fulfill any type of flooring project, no matter how big or small. But it's their service that truly sets them apart.
“We do not sell a product, we sell ourselves,” says Hodgson. “Our follow-up and determination to exceed our client’s expectations is second to none.”
To surpass expectations during the renovation shown here, Curtis Carpets' team installed Surewood Montana Billings hand-scraped oak hardwood by Beckham Brothers – exclusive locally to Curtis Carpets. Chosen for style and luxury, this warm, rich hardwood brings a touch of class and elegance to the room, while offering strength and durability.

No two kitchens are the same, so it's only right that the cabinetry should be customized for that home's unique space and needs.
“Springfield Woodworking not only builds cabinetry for brand-new homes, we also specialize in renovations because we custom-fit the cabinets to fit each client’s preference, needs, walls and appliances,” says Ms. Kleinsasser of Springfield Woodworking. “Springfield personally measures every kitchen to ensure a good custom fit. All of our cabinets are built especially for each individual home and not to any standard specifications.”
As part of this home's larger renovation, Springfield Woodworking created and installed kitchen cabinets, as well as bathroom vanities and laundry cabinetry.
The maple bevelled shaker doors in a white opaque finish are exclusively manufactured by Springfield Woodworking. Thoughtful details include Germanengineered Hettich anti-slam hardware on all doors and drawers, and a closed cover on the garbage and recycling bin to prevent wafting odours. One of the base cabinets even has hidden casters so it can be moved and used in different areas as needed.
“Springfield continues to maintain a stellar reputation within the cabinet industry in Manitoba. Our quality workmanship and great customer service speaks for itself,” says Kleinsasser.

The Perfect Fit DESIGN &DECOR
With an island this spacious and ceiling this high, it would be easy for many light fixtures to get lost. To fill the sizeable space and ensure ample lighting, four gorgeous pendants were selected to complete this warm, sophisticated room.
“This Edmar pendant from Kichler Lighting in a natural brass finish brings a subtle touch of gold to the kitchen while balancing out the modern black hardware,” says Mical Secter, showroom manager of Total Lighting Sales. “This pendant was specifically chosen for the delicate chain detail, which the designer favoured for an eclectic feel.”
Each Edmar pendant boasts three sockets – unusual as most single pendants have just one – providing three times the light. The fixture's metal frame is also available in black and polished nickel.
For all spaces, big or small, Total Lighting has the latest light solutions in their unique, open concept showroom.
“Function and beauty – you can have it all! Our fantastic and experienced team can help find the perfect style to fit your space and budget,” says Secter, who stresses that customer service is top priority.
Having helped Manitobans light up their lives for over 45 years, Total Lighting is where bright ideas begin.

In the spotlight with Rita Talwar of Soma Interiors
How did you start in Interior Design?
• My love for design started young, when my cousins and I would spend hours laying out our Barbie houses. It was more about the space than playing with the dolls! As I got older and learned more about the profession, I fell deeper in love with its ability to transform. We listen to clients’ wants and wishes and design to meet those, but inevitably, well-designed space has the power to enhance their environment. I am very lucky to have found my passion so early on and be in the career of my dreams.
What elements do you feel will affect the future of Interior Design?
• Technology - not only does it affect how we design, it's also becoming apparent that artificial intelligence (AI) is all around us. We can control lighting and music from our smartphones, but appliances are also designed with smart features to let us know when they need repair or supplies. Our ovens have the capability to cook multiple items to a perfect doneness without us watching the clock! It tells us. It's truly astounding where tech has gone.
• The Pandemic has changed every industry and many have moved to a virtual platform, which from a residential interiors perspective changes the landscape of the home. Open concept layouts have been frustrating for families that now require both parents working and children learning from home. The list of spaces families need/want is changing - people want solitude but still desire communal open spaces. Private, public and family flex spaces are being redefined. We are spending more time at home and our homes are working harder for us. That affects the planning of spaces all the way from layout to materials and balancing the AI integration that a household is ready for.
What upcoming project for 2022 are you most excited about?
• Oh so many! We have a good mix. Stay tuned to our Instagram for updates! Pay special attention to Brock Street house (renovation) LaSalle Build (new construction) and a special project with Thomas Hinds Tobacconists!
Favourite space to design?
• Kitchens all day long! Kitchens are more than just a place to cook; we eat, laugh, cry and grow in this space. Everyone ends up in the kitchen, right? It's the heart of the home. A close second would be the design of powder rooms; this room is an opportunity for a client to be bold and take a risk- an element of surprise if you will.
Favourite colour?
• Deep jewel tone blue - tried and true would be Benjamin Moore Hale Navy.
Favourite vacation spot?
• Lamia Greece- I spent countless summers there. It's my “Victoria Beach” for those that have similar memories of VB.
Is there a design period you are fascinated by?
• Art Deco is my current obsession. I love the patterns and mixing of materials. My personal aesthetic is combining it with mid-century modern design cues.
