12 - PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Dear Readers, > It’s summertime! Even though we live in the Sunshine State, we still look forward to that carefree season when the sun is brighter, the days are longer, and the kids are out of school. We should take time to recharge ourselves and enjoy what these next sunny months have to offer. Summer is the perfect opportunity to try something new, take an exotic getaway, or simply relax in the paradise that is Florida. As you plan your activities for the summer, the first thing you should put on your list is to find a quiet spot and dive into this magazine! Sven’s son Anthony and first dog Leon. Summer some years ago in Southwest Florida.

You can feel the changes that come with this new season in the warm (and sometimes hot) air, and you can surely smell it in the sweet floral aromas that surround us. As the colors of summer begin to come out again, it seems as though the people in this city look somewhat happier, and maybe even prettier. This is probably due in part to the new summer trends that are making their way into Central Florida. Our summertime fashion shoot will give you a glimpse of these exciting fresh looks. In this special issue of Orlando Style, you will find a variety of articles to get you in the perfect mood for summer. Since this is the time for renewal, what better way to get you on the path to revitalization than finding the best doctors for your health? Our “Elite Doctors” feature will help you learn which of our local doctors is right for you. These doctors have been voted by their local peers and patients, who have kindly recommended them for the readers of Style Magazines. We polled numerous doctors and patients, asking them to specify which doctors they would choose for their own loved ones. Our brand new 2014 results are in this issue, so be sure to take a look inside! Nurturing your family and relationships is just as important as nurturing your health, so why not take an adventure with those you love? Do things with your family that you may not have time for during the rest

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

of the year. Especially in Central Florida, there are many fun activities that will fill your summer days with smiles. Perhaps play a game of golf at one of the beautiful courses in Orlando, or visit our world-class theme parks. Even a ride on the innovative “SunRail” would be a great way to see the cities that you have been longing to visit. Whatever you choose, be sure to enjoy the fabulous restaurants, shops, and natural wonders that make our city beautiful. As for my own family, we have just finished building our new home, and we are finally ready to move in. After a huge amount of work and stress, this move is certainly worth the wait. We are looking forward to this new chapter in our lives, and believe it is a great investment, since the prices in our area will rise again. Real estate is still relatively inexpensive in our local area, but it surely won’t remain like this forever. If you’re thinking about getting involved in real estate endeavors, now would be a great opportunity to do so. Also, what would summertime in the U.S.A. be without an all-American celebration? There are many festivities taking place around the city this Fourth of July, and we hope to see you there. Summer is here! Enjoy this season and live life in Style! Sincerely,

Sven J. Bode, Publisher

SAWGRASS MARRIOTT

GOLF RESORT & SPA A SUMMER GETAWAY ON FLORIDA’S HISTORIC COAST By Cathleen K. Bode

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE - 17

The Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort and Spa is the perfect place to enjoy Florida’s enticing landscape and history. Just a two-hour drive from Orlando and only three and a half hours away from Tampa, the Sawgrass Marriott gives you unbelievably close access to the breathtaking Ponte Vedra Beach, as well as other fabulous locations along Florida’s Historic Coast. The resort is 30 minutes away from both Jacksonville and St. Augustine, two of this summer’s must-see cities. The stunning 63-acre property of the Sawgrass Marriott celebrates the natural beauty of Florida, while combining it with modern luxuries of coastal living, including a tranquil resort spa, elegant restaurants, and champion-worthy golf courses. This resort is bringing back the beauty of retro style—which has grown immensely popular in Orlando hotels and restaurants—and a sky-high lobby showcases the brilliance of the Marriott’s simplicity in design. White is the color of choice at the Sawgrass Marriott, and the clean lines of the interior décor celebrate the 1950s aesthetic with a modern spin. The 510 relaxing guest rooms, including 21 indulgent suites, are designed with the Florida exterior in mind, allowing the oceanfront lifestyle to carry you from day to night. Calming earth tones compliment the warm wood furnishings, and the resort’s signature Revive Marriott bedding provides each accommodation with over-the-top comfort. As of January 2014, the Sawgrass Marriott has unveiled an incredible multimillion dollar resort-wide renovation, enhancing the already-beautiful Floridian atmosphere. Sawgrass Marriott’s General Manager Paige Koerbel is happy to reveal to summer travelers this recent project, which has benefited every aspect of the beachfront resort, and the transformation has converted this premiere vacation destination into a rejuvenating coastal experience. Designed by a collaboration of celebrated architects, this renovation has brought the Sawgrass Marriott much closer to Florida’s natural waterfront environment, and the new resort interiors allow guests to feel the relaxation of a warm beach day while in the lobby of their resort.

This new renovation also makes the Sawgrass Marriott the prime location for business travelers, and the resort’s sophisticated 56,000 square-foot meeting space provides any work event or conference with the balance of a private workspace with calming Florida charm. All of the 36 meeting rooms are fully equipped with the latest technology and are styled for easy accessibility for events of all sizes. With the fine dining options and recreational activities of the Sawgrass Marriott, this location is sure to be a favorite among hardworking/hard playing visitors. One of the most spectacular features for those staying at the Sawgrass Marriott is exclusive access to its 5 golf courses, including the PGA TOUR’s PLAYERS Stadium Course. On May 8-11, this course hosted the PLAYERS Championship, where golf greats such as Tiger Woods proved their skill and fought for one of the most venerable titles on the PGA TOUR. After undergoing a complete redesign in 2006, this 7,215-yard, par72 course, designed by Pete Dye, is not to be missed for those golf aficionados looking to experience one of the best afternoons of their lives. The “Island Green” 17th hole is considered to be the most photographed hole in the golf world, and it is known to be extremely difficult, even for some of the mot talented professionals. Other Courses include Dye’s Valley Course, which challenges golfers of any level with its 6,938 yards of expansive hills and valleys, wide greens, and water features at every hole. The Sawgrass Country Club, which was named “Best in State” by Golf Digest, was designed by architect Ed Seay of Palmer Course Design. The 27 holes that cover the 10,340 yards of beautiful greenery invite golfers to enjoy the Florida scenery of pines and palms. For resort guests looking to improve their game or those planning to pick up a golf club for the first time, the Tour Academy at TPC Sawgrass offers instruction for players of any level. The 2,800 square-foot instructional facility offers indoor hitting bays, private practice areas, a dedicated driving range, as well as putting and chipping greens and bunkers. If you are new to the game, the Tour Academy is

a great place to learn the basics, and beginner lessons from the Academy’s highly skilled staff will set you on the right path to mastering your golf swing. The best way to indulge yourself after a successful afternoon of hitting the green is with one of the luxurious treatments at the Sawgrass Spa. This 25,000 square foot sanctuary features innovative Eastern design elements, warm lighting, and calming music to create the perfect setting for serenity. 19 private rooms and personalized treatments including facials, massages and body wraps make your spa day unlike any other. The Sawgrass Custom Facial is 50 minutes of heavenly bliss, providing your skin with soothing botanicals and treatment levels styled to your specific needs. You can continue your spa experience with a trip to the workout studio, which offers personal training classes, as well as yoga, Pilates, and spin sessions. The Sawgrass Marriott features nine specialty restaurants and lounges, but perhaps the most memorable is Vernon’s, named after former General Manager and President of PGA TOUR Golf Course Properties, Vernon Kelly. This divine restaurant is simply remarkable, as its inventive menu emphasizes flavors from the Atlantic coast with a raw bar and chowder bar, offering a new twist to oceanfront dining. The most fitting—and delicious—wines on Vernon’s list is the Greg Norman Pinot Noir, which allows your golf-inspired day to continue well into the evening and pairs excellently with Vernon’s fillet. Vernon’s is an animal cruelty-free restaurant, serving only grass-fed beef and supporting natural farming practices, an admirable characteristic in today’s food industry. The resort also provides easy access to the historic city of St. Augustine. As the first city in America, St. Augustine is perhaps the most important community in Florida, if not the nation, and there is much to be experienced, tasted, and discovered of this Spanish-founded city. The old town center is packed full of unique shops and restaurants, and a stroll through the main streets makes for a lovely afternoon with friends or family. An interesting place to begin your visit to this city is the St. Augustine

Distillery on Riberia Street. This plant building, established in 1907, features free tours and tastings, and visitors can watch as spirits are made from scratch while learning about the age-old process of distilling whiskey, rum, gin, and vodka in copper pot stills. The distillery’s museum reveals the heritage of Florida’s distilling past and agricultural foundation, and it allows guests to experience the history of the distillery. The building, which was once the home of an ice plant, has been repurposed to bring the city of St. Augustine locally processed beverages, such as its Florida Cane Vodka, which is distilled from 100 percent pure Florida-farmed sugar cane. The Ice Plant Bar & Restaurant, located right next door to the distillery, specializes in artesian tastes and spirits. This eatery focuses on sustainability, and its renovated walls and beloved business serve as testaments to this fact. Inspired by the industrialization of the early 20th century, this restaurant reinforces the idea that simple ingredients make the real difference in fine cooking. The produce, dairy, meat, and fish that are brought into the Ice Plant are locally grown and purveyed, ensuring both the quality and taste of each delicious dish on the menu. A tour at the distillery followed by lunch at the Ice Plant is a perfect combination, as it is quite an experience to watch your liquor of choice being prepared and then enjoying it in the same building. Back at the Marriott, you can end your day in comfort at the Cabana Beach Club, a private oceanfront retreat with a casual, inviting atmosphere. Although PERFECT for beach weddings, or special events, the Cabana Beach Club is a lovely place to spend a quiet evening in the cool ocean breezes. At the Club’s Sea Porch Bar & Grill, you’ll find one of the most luscious piña OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

colada’s on the coast, a heavenly tropical concoction to sweeten up the beautiful scenery. While the Sea Porch offers beachside classics, 619 Ocean View serves up fresh Florida seafood with tastes from the Mediterranean, and restaurant manager Phil ensures that each guest leaves with their appetites fully satisfied. With all of the coastal adventures awaiting you, a summer retreat at the Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa is the perfect opportunity to get to know the Florida cities that make our coast shine. Whether you desire to experience the beaches of Ponte Vedra, the timeless traditions of St. Augustine, or simply the colorful tastes of the Atlantic, come soak up Florida’s rich heritage and become a part of history in the making. W 20 - TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

FORT LAUDERDALE By Courtney Caggiano

> The W Fort Lauderdale is unlike any other hotel on Florida’s coastline. From its sleek, modern design to its cocktailinspired atmosphere, every aspect of the W celebrates the excitement of South Florida through a nightlife perspective. A three-hour drive from Orlando and a four-hour trip from Tampa, this hotel is an easy getaway for those seeking a trip to Florida’s southern beaches. A walk into the lobby of the W brings an unexpected surprise along with a smile; instead of reflecting the brightness of the beach and the Fort Lauderdale lifestyle, the aesthetic of the W is a turn from the ordinary. Calming stone walls echo the natural splendor that radiates from the slate floor to the soft blues and creams of the furniture. Rather than emphasizing the warmth of the Florida sunshine, the W’s design makes guests feel as though they are deep within the Atlantic Ocean, soaking up the soothing coolness of underwater life. However, this dark interior compliments the lively beach environment, as the entire far end of the hotel opens up to glass doors of streaming natural light and a too-good-to-be-true cerulean ocean.

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

With understated charm that allows the natural splendor of Florida’s coast to shine, the main design element of the W’s artistic nature is simplicity, and it is reverberated throughout every crevice and corner. Once you enter one of the 517 elegant rooms, you will be enchanted by the relaxing power of this simplicity. The white luscious bedding centers a room of cooling grey walls, like a cloud upon a calm coastal morning. Subtle hues of Florida’s natural environment echo around the room; soft wood and ethereal stone create a sanctuary of minimalism, and the peek-a-boo bathroom hidden by a slender sliding door is more spacious than most hotel guests would expect. With its sophisticated design and expansive windows, it could be likened to your own personal spa. The W’s exclusive Bliss Spa is a haven of relaxation, and its soothing rhythmic tunes welcome guests to an afternoon of respite. The Fabulous Facial is one of the Spa’s celebrated treatments, and its combination of cleansing botanicals, herbal moisturizers, and rejuvenating ex-

foliation leave skin feeling free from the damage of the summer sun. Each spa technician personalizes the treatment levels to the needs of guests, whether they are seeking an invigorating massage, a refreshing facial, or a revitalizing body treatment. Be sure to keep the pampering going with a stop into the Ted Gibson salon, where you can experience hair styling techniques inspired by world-famous stylist Ted Gibson. Currently, the salon is featuring a Braid Bar, where highly skilled hair experts transform your mane with the latest trends. From classic fishtail braids or milkmaid up-dos to edgy customized braids, the Ted Gibson salon will give you the ideal braid of choice, so you can enjoy your beach evening in carefree style. You can get in the mood for summer in the W’s Living Room, the perfect place to spend a relaxing afternoon or find exciting drinks and music after hours, all with an endless view of the beautiful Atlantic. The Living Room offers delicious light fare for those craving a bite, and the open windows leading out to the

“ Living Room’s terrace of trendy décor beckon the cool ocean breezes to fill the lounge with the feeling of coastal life. An unbeatable spot for watching the waves, the terrace allows you to soak up the sun in luxury, with a mouth-watering finger food menu and a variety of tempting cocktail choices. One of the signature cocktails to heighten your experience in the Living Room Lounge is the Spicy Paloma, a lively blend of Casamigos Silver Tequila, agave nectar, fresh limejuice, grapefruit juice, and a splash of Thai chili syrup. With the spicy kick of the chili flavor, this adventurous drink may not be for the faint of heart, but it is as bold as the design of the W itself. The drink is effortlessly balanced, as the brightness of the citrus notes lighten the sharp tastes of the tequila and chili pepper. An excellent choice for tequila lovers, the Spicy Paloma is perhaps the most celebrity-worthy drinks on the coast; the W’s choice tequila is part of George Clooney’s exclusive line made just for the hotel. This drink is like a burning Florida sunset, with its hues of blood orange and vibrant pink swirling together to create the ultimate visual concoction.

THE W’S EXCLUSIVE BLISS SPA IS A HAVEN OF RELAXATION, AND ITS SOOTHING RHYTHMIC TUNES WELCOME GUESTS TO AN AFTERNOON OF RESPITE.

After the sun goes down, the Living Room heats up with live music from some of the hottest DJs. Let the rhythm overtake you as the smooth beats invade the air, or hide away in one of the oversized booths and enjoy a drink or two with friends. In May, the Living Room welcomed DJ Adam Share at their New/Next party, an exciting happening that will be one of many in the W’s nightlife future. A night in the Living Room calls for a hearty and delicious breakfast, and the best can be found at Steak 954. What is known to be one of Fort Lauderdale’s most innovative steak and seafood restaurants opens well before dinner hours to feature a decadent brunch menu. Steak 954 specializes in satisfying your sweet tooth; the Vanilla French Toast is a fantasy made of the thickest slices of toast smothered in dolce de leche crème. Pastry chef Sarah Magoon has mastered the art of transforming childhood favorites into ageless masterpieces, and her Pop Tarts are a prime example of her expertise. For this treat, which is even more delicious than the youthful classic, Magoon tucks warm baked apples and rum de leche into a flaky, melt-in-your-mouth pastry.

A dinner at Steak 954 is just as magnificent, and the Bone-In Beef Short Rib is a cut above. Served with heirloom tomatoes and marinated in flavors of basil and natural au jus, this short rib is divinely tender and falls off the bone with the slightest of ease. For dessert, Chef Magoon works her magic with her Key Lime Baked Alaska, a brilliant twist on South Florida’s classic key lime pie. This retro-inspired treat hides away a citrusy center of key lime goodness beneath a dome of perfectly baked meringue. From enticing tastes and alluring drinks to the serene yet stimulating ambiance, the W Fort Lauderdale is an escape all its own, and the party is just getting started. Come celebrate the warm summer nights in style by planning your stay today. For more information, visit www.wfortlauderdalehotel.com.

MOST shocking CELEBRITY PLASTIC SURGERY TRANSFORMATIONS By Riesa Pascal

JOAN RIVERS Age: 81 Work Completed: Brow lift, an eye tuck, two facelifts, rhinoplasty, jaw implants, liposuction, breast implants and BOTOX®.

before after

Joan Rivers has never been shy about her extensive plastic surgery procedures. The actress is known for a comic style that often includes poking fun at herself and even recently appeared in a Dodge commercial where she joked about her face melting off for being plastic. Whereas some of the celebrities we’ll feature here admit at least partial regret for their procedures, Rivers is reportedly very happy about her appearance. In 2009, Rivers even wrote a book on the subject titled Men Are Stupid... And They Like Big Boobs: A Woman’s Guide to Beauty Through Plastic Surgery. In the book she discusses medical details, costs and complications associated with various cosmetic procedures. If anyone is qualified for that discussion, it’s certainly Rivers who has undergone nearly all of them. LINDSAY LOHAN Age: 28 Work Completed: Breast implants, lip enhancement and possibly cheek fillers.

before after

Having just celebrated her 28th birthday, Lindsay Lohan is pretty young to be included on a list of celebrities with bad plastic surgeries. However, a look at the photos above should be enough of an explanation as to why. It wasn’t too long ago when Lohan was the fresh-faced Hollywood starlet that every director was clamoring to get in their latest film. These days the Mean Girls star is better known for her bad behavior, a very public struggle with addiction and the fact that she now looks like a 40-year-old woman. One too many lip enhancements and a rumored “liquid facelift” have stripped Lohan of the undeniably natural beauty she once had. It’s fantastic to see Lohan out of rehab and making an effort to turn her life around, but it’s a shame there’s no going back on that plastic surgery too. PRISCILLA PRESLEY Age: 69 Work Completed: Brow lift, facelift, rhinoplasty, cheek implants and BOTOX®.

before after

StyleToMe.com

Priscilla Presley, ex-wife of the legendary Elvis Presley, is knocking on 70’s door but her face says otherwise. The once stunning beauty now looks unrecognizable due to a botched cosmetic surgery procedure by a bogus doctor. Presley has confirmed reports that she underwent plastic surgical operations from Daniel Serrano “Dr. Dan,” an unqualified and inexperienced plastic surgeon who injected her with a substance he claimed was better than BOTOX®. The man was later sent to prison for using the injection on several celebrities, but the damage was already done. Presley has since received treatment from highly skilled cosmetic specialists in an effort to improve her face, but she will always be a reminder of what happens when plastic surgery goes very wrong.

CELEBRITY SOUP - 37

> Whether they’re going under the knife to cut yet another thing off their body or adding something new, celebrities love plastic surgery. Although we fully support changing something you don’t like about yourself, try making sure your face doesn’t become the laughing stock of the Internet once it’s all said and done. JOCELYN WILDENSTEIN Age: 73 Work Completed: Multiple brow lifts, cheek implants, chin augmentation, facelifts, rhinoplasty, collagen injections and eyelid surgery. Where, oh where do I begin with this one? New York socialite Jocelyn Wildenstein is THE face of plastic surgery addiction. When your post-surgical appearance earns you the nickname “Catwoman,” you know something’s wrong. Wildenstein’s plastic surgery journey all started as an effort to win her estranged husband back after the end of their 20-year marriage. Before she knew it, 4 million dollars went down the drain and she looked like an escapee from Vincent Price’s House of Wax. Maybe Wildenstein should have spent a little time reading Joan’s book. Fortunately for her, it seems Wildenstein might have been saved by the very thing she needed saving from. Recent photos show her looking almost human like and prove plastic surgery isn’t always a one-way street.

before

MICHAEL JACKSON Age: 50

after

Work Completed: Rhinoplasty, cheek implants, chin augmentation, eyelid surgery and many more procedures are rumored. As a huge Michael Jackson fan, it’s a shame that his appearance so greatly overshadowed his brilliance as a recording artist and performer. Plastic surgeons estimate the number of surgeries Jackson had to his face could be in the dozens. Even Jackson’s own mother has admitted her son was addicted to plastic surgery, chalking up his insisting of only having 2 procedures to the fact that he was embarrassed. Perhaps most shocking about Jackson’s drastic change in appearance was the complete change in the color of his skin. After being diagnosed with Lupus and Vitiligo, Jackson claimed a number of treatments for his sensitive skin eventually led to it lightening in color. Regardless of his unusual appearance, Jackson will always be the King of Pop in my book. Albeit, a rather scary looking one towards his unfortunate and untimely end.

before

IGOR AND GRICHKA BOGDANOFF Age: 64

after

Work Completed: Chin and cheek implants, BOTOX®, collagen injections and fillers. Thirty years ago the Bogdanoff brothers were the heartthrobs of French television, starring in the first French TV series to cover science fiction and science fact in depth. Now the once handsome twins more closely resemble those same alien life forms they used to report on. The brothers are very clearly addicted to plastic surgery and could’ve also taken a page or two out of Joan’s book. On second thought, maybe they should’ve read the whole thing. So what’s the takeaway from all this? If you’re going to have plastic surgery make sure the plastic surgeon is reputable, and do an extensive research on the procedure and on the surgeon. Just remember you can’t hold on to youth forever and although plastic surgery isn’t always a bad thing, perhaps you just need to let nature take its course.

STYLE MD - 39

Don’t sacrifice long-term skin health for the short-term satisfaction of a tan this summer. UV rays wreak havoc on the skin, leading to wrinkles, dryness, age spots and thinning skin. If you think you’re doing a decent job of protecting yourself by applying a bit of sunscreen before the beach or wearing that cute hat you picked up at the flea market last month, you might be in for a shock. Few people get it right when it comes to summer skin care.

SUNSCREEN SLIP-UPS /// Using sunscreen properly is essential to maintaining healthy skin, as it protects against painful sunburns, premature aging and skin cancer. Unfortunately, it’s likely you’re choosing the wrong kind, waiting too long to put it on or applying it incorrectly. Experts generally recommend choosing a water-resistant product that contains SPF 15 or higher and offers broadspectrum protection. Apply it about 15 to 30 minutes before heading outside, and then reapply after swimming or sweating or every two hours, even if you don’t think you need it. And sunscreen isn’t just for the beach; sun damage can occur while driving, window shopping or enjoying brunch on an outdoor patio. Sunscreen is available in creams, lotions, sprays, gels and other forms, and some products are tinted to help with application. It may take a bit of trial and error to find the right one for your skin type and lifestyle, so don’t give up if your first choice doesn’t work out. If you’re prone to breakouts during the summer months, opt for an oil-free product.

GOING TO EXTREMES /// When it comes to sun exposure, any extreme can have harmful consequences. You certainly don’t want to spend all day sunbathing, but you don’t want to lock yourself inside, either. The human body needs a little sun— typically about 10 to 15 minutes each day—to produce vitamin D. Too little vitamin D makes the skin more susceptible to skin damage, while high

levels help protect against sunburn. Plus, the vitamin is necessary for calcium absorption and healthy nerves, muscles and immune system function. So, how can you protect your skin while still enjoying the summer sun and boosting vitamin D levels? The key to healthy sun exposure is moderation. Intense UV radiation leads to skin cancer and premature aging, so limit your unprotected time outdoors to about 15 minutes during the peak hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Both UVA and UVB rays are strong during midday, greatly increasing your risk of burning and melanoma during these hours. And don’t assume you’re safe just because it’s cloudy outside; harmful UV rays easily penetrate clouds and fog, which means your skin is at risk whenever it’s exposed. Sun damage can occur even if you don’t develop a noticeable burn.

DEHYDRATION AND DRY SKIN /// Dry skin is a big problem in the summer, and it can make wrinkles more noticeable and leave your skin vulnerable to sun damage. Chlorine, saltwater, airconditioning and sunbathing are all drying to the skin. Washing your skin with soap to remove sweat and oil causes additional dryness and irritation. Plus, if you’re using the wrong products to moisturize, you may be making things worse. But don’t be fooled into skipping the lotion if your skin seems less dry during summer; when the skin becomes dehydrated, it produces more oil, which in turn can worsen breakouts and leave skin with a greasy feeling. The natural response is to scrub more frequently, but that only worsens skin problems, including acne. Gently exfoliating is a good idea to remove dead skin and to improve hydration from moisturizers, but don’t get carried away.

plenty of water and eating a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, too. One of the best ways to keep your skin healthy and hydrated is to increase your intake of water during the summer.

MAKEUP MISTAKES /// Obviously, it’s easier to continue your standard makeup routine when summer rolls around, but that’s a big mistake when it comes to the health of your skin. Skin is oilier in the summer, and this oil tends to become trapped in the bristles of makeup brushes and other applicators, where it creates the perfect environment for bacterial growth. To prevent clogged pores and worsening acne, clean your makeup brushes and applicators regularly with soap and water to remove oil, dead skin and bacteria. And don’t take your makeup to the beach or leave it inside your parked car; heat and light destroy the preservatives in makeup that prevent bacterial growth, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. If you experience a worsening of acne or other skin problems, even after adjusting your routine, see your doctor for advice.<

THE HUMAN BODY NEEDS A LITTLE SUN—TYPICALLY ABOUT 10 TO 15 MINUTES EACH DAY— TO PRODUCE VITAMIN D.

To moisturize your skin, apply a light, oil-free product after tanning, swimming or bathing. Avoid heavy moisturizers to prevent clogged pores and sticky, slimy skin, and look for a product that contains SPF sun protection. And, if you’re a fan of dehydrating alcoholic and sugary beach drinks, make sure you’re getting

U.S. PRESSURES FOREIGN BANKS TO IDENTIFY ACCOUNT HOLDERS - BY MARK L. HORWITZ

> The latest efforts of the U.S. Justice Department and the Internal Revenue Service to pressure foreign banks was seen when Credit Suisse pled guilty to a wide ranging conspiracy to help U.S. taxpayers evade taxes through offshore accounts. As part of the guilty plea, Credit Suisse will pay $2.6 billion to the federal government and New York financial regulators. This is just another example of the United States government’s pressure on foreign banks to report accounts held by United States citizens and residents. The U.S. government is also pursuing other banks, not only in Switzerland, but in other countries throughout the world.

The U.S. has put a significant effort into forcing Swiss banks to comply with U.S. reporting regulations. In effect, foreign banks are forced to act as policemen to report U.S. taxpayers’ foreign accounts. This effort against foreign banks is on-going with no end in sight. The impact upon U.S. citizens holding such accounts can be quite severe. Once U.S. SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

There is nothing illegal about having offshore accounts. Offshore accounts over $10,000 must, however, be reported to the U.S. government on a yearly basis and earnings on the account must be included on U.S. tax returns. The Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program provides a means by which a person with an undisclosed offshore account can avoid criminal investigation and prosecution. This program, however, is not available if the IRS gets the offshore bank records before application to the amnesty program is made. <

KIMBERLEA ISAAC & KELLY NEWTON Are The Game Changers Of The Beauty Industry

PURE BLENDS The idea to create Pure Blends was born in 2013. Having been inspired by the most iconic international cities the world over, Kelly and Kimberlea set out to foster a unique spa experience. The ladies combined the excitement of New York, the ultimate luxuries of London and the sophistication of Paris, all under one roof right here, in Winter Park! More importantly, Kelly wanted to proactively address environmental and wellness concerns, while creating a preventive health spa. With Kimberlea, she developed an innovative apothecary line of eco-friendly organic treatments, customized for every customer. “Everyone’s skin is different so our treatments and services are tailored to the individual’s needs,” explains Kelly. “I knew that this was a very different concept...something fresh (literally) and unique.” As a result, Pure Blends’ services are already creating major buzz and are poised to set the bench-mark in the Spa and Beauty Industry.

to the finishing details of the spa’s treatment rooms, Pure Blends is truly a unique brand and experience. NATURAL & ORGANIC Pure Blends’ core mission is being organic, natural and green. Even the tissue paper being used is old US newspaper. And instead of paper menus, Kelly and Kimberlea use Kindle Fires for their service menus and magazine subscriptions. Quotes from customers “The Pure Blends experience fills a serious lifestyle void in Winter Park game changer.” Stephen P. “I’m in love with the design style of this spa. KELLY NEWTON Kelly is widely known as the founder of Pure Blends, a luxurious spa and apothecary. Before she acquired that title, however, Kelly had consulted and worked with some of the largest companies in fashion, style, and entertainment, including Ralph Lauren, Seventeen Magazine, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, H&M, Zales, Universal Music Group, Sony, and MTV. Kelly started her career in the beauty industry, running several high end luxury spas and hair salons, Kelly wondered why there wasn’t an ecofriendly, futuristic spa, where fresh fruits, vegetables and essential oils could be blended like smoothies and custom tailored to the client’s needs. SHOULD I START MY OWN LLC? By Mark NeJame Contributor Vanessa Braeley, Associate Attorney with NeJame Law

> Summer is here! A nostalgic reminder of summer vacations, summer jobs and lemonade stands. Even as kids, we all had an entrepreneurial spirit in us. Today it may be setting up e-shop on Etsy.com or starting that houseflipping company. No matter where your interests and creativity may take you, there are some very important threshold considerations to become familiar with before starting a business.

which govern in the absence of any Operating Agreement of members of the LLC. This being said, an Operating Agreement, while not required, is extremely important. Certain terms of your Agreement may replace terms of the Acts, which could be of major benefit to your company. Each company is different and its operational structure must be laid out to best benefit the members and the business.

Now, it’s safe to say the limited liability company, or the “LLC” is the most commonly used organizational structure. But it may not be the best one for your potential business. In order to determine which structure is right for you, it’s imperative (not suggested) that you see an attorney. Employment and tax law are intimately entwined in operating a business, and neither are areas that a layman should self-teach. So whether you are contemplating starting your own company, or are incorporated already, here are some major reasons to enlist legal help:

• One of the benefits to an LLC is passthrough taxation, where members report their share of the profit or loss on individual tax returns, thus avoiding double taxation (when income is taxed twice: once at the corporate level and again at the individual level). Any tax due is then paid at the individual level. If there are several members of your LLC, an informational tax return is required (otherwise known as partnership tax). Single member LLCs report income or loss on a Schedule C. Don’t be fooled – this can be a VERY complicated area of law! There are also hidden benefits in partnership taxation that only a tax attorney may be able to discern.

• January 1, 2014, the Florida Revised Limited Liability Act (“the New Florida Act”) came into effect. This has an immediate impact on any LLC formed on or after January 1, 2014. For the remainder of calendar year 2014, alreadyexisting LLCs will continue to abide by the Florida Limited Liability Company Act (the “Existing Act”), but the Existing Act will be repealed beginning January 1, 2015, at which point the New Act will govern all Florida LLCs and those who otherwise do business with them. • The New Florida Act and the Existing Act are considered the default statutes,

StyleToMe.com

• Some additional benefits to the LLC are flexibility and fewer formalities. There are no shareholders in an LLC, formalities such as taking meeting minutes and voting are not necessary (although there still exists a fiduciary relationship to other members). Further, there are various types of distributions of profits that can be used in an LLC. Again, an Operating Agreement drafted by an attorney can best address these issues. • There are downsides to LLCs, however, they really depend on what type of busi-

ness you wish to operate and how you wish to operate that business. Changing members and otherwise transferring ownership can prove to be difficult, and LLCs can be expensive to form and maintain. Please note, just because your LLC is listed as “inactive” on Sunbiz. org, does not mean you cannot be sued! There are certain litigation strategies that can be implemented to protect an LLC from litigation, but again, this is a topic for your lawyer. • Make sure that your “business purpose” is broadly stated. Any specification in this area upon filing your LLC could result in “ultra vires” actions, or actions taken beyond the scope or power of the LLC, exposing one to independent liability. So, should you start your own LLC? Probably not. These considerations are just the tip of the iceberg when dealing with organizational structures of businesses. But there’s no reason to be scared! With a little legal guidance and some start up money, you can soon get that summer lemonade stand into full swing. <

50 - DON’T MISS THE BEAT

POP PSYCHOLOGY NEON TREES By Courtney Caggiano

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

DON’T MISS THE BEAT - 51

> Neon Trees may have taken the rock world by storm after the debut of 2010’s “Animal,” but with the release of a new album and an exciting summer tour, the band has set out to conquer the pop genre—a place lead singer Tyler Glenn has decided to call home. For generations, pop music has often seemed to be nothing more than pop music—catchy melodies and superficial lyrics that somehow capture the ear of the world—but what if pop music had the potential to stand out as the most genuine genre in the music industry? With their latest album, Pop Psychology, Neon Trees brings sincerity to the heart of their standout pop anthems, proving that pop’s reputation is anything but true for their music. It’s a hot summer evening in Orlando and Neon Trees front man Tyler Glenn takes the Hard Rock Live stage with the energy of a 1980s pop icon who’s waited thirty years to shine in the spotlight. Donned in neon yellow pants and reflective silver shoes, it’s no wonder he’s the image of a band with a name like “Neon Trees,” but his look-at-me attitude coupled with Michael Jackson-inspired dance moves easily confirm the fact that every aspect of Glenn is neon. However, there’s something in Glenn’s stage presence that separates him from the average pop crooner; even with his bleach blonde hair, four outfit changes, and a girl-pop style set list, Glenn is unashamedly and unequivocally himself. Glenn’s third studio album, which is filled to the brim with pop-soaked hits, has allowed him to reach a new level of selfassurance, since the singer has always been drawn to the pop songs of the past. Although Neon Trees’ recent concert in

Orlando is a testament to the fact that Glenn’s talent certainly belongs in the pop world, the band’s current sound is a result of Glenn’s long-awaited process of discovering himself. Prior to 2010, Neon Trees was simply a band of four musicians from the American West, searching for a way to fulfill their dreams of bringing the dance-pop music of the previous decades to a fresh new life. These dreams were spearheaded by a young Glenn who, although wanting to stay true to his pop roots, sought to make music that fans would want to hear: music that replicated the songs of present popular rock bands. When Neon Trees released their rock debut single, “Animal,” the band was met with high praise from critics and audiences alike, and Glenn wanted to continue giving his newfound fans more of the songs they desired. The skyrocketing success of “Habits,” Neon Trees’ first full-length album, brought the band opportunities to open for acts such as Thirty Seconds to Mars and My Chemical Romance, rock bands that aimed to revive the neo-punk scene, a genre that was unfamiliar to a poploving Glenn. His ambition to fit in with the rock stars of music’s “in-crowd” helped take Neon Trees to the top of the charts, but Glenn knew that the singles landing on these charts did not truly reflect the musician that he was. The man in the mohawk and black sunglasses may have found fame in the rock world, but the man beneath this exterior was a colorful pop singer wanting desperately to appear.

for himself rather than just for his fans. This step into a new genre of music enabled Glenn to not only explore his musical possibilities, but to also craft an album that was successful in his own eyes. “[We’ve] kind of gone into different sounds and explored different types of music,” Glenn explains. “I think this album is the most concise and cohesive that we’ve put out, and I think it sounds the most produced and the most thoughtful.” Jumping from the rock world to the pop genre was Glenn’s way of showing the world the person that he is, and the world applauded his efforts. Neon Trees’ “Sleeping with a Friend,” the first single from Pop Psychology, climbed the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and its contemporary pop sound—a sudden change from the rock-driven melodies of Habits—only brought the band more success, including the need for a largerthan-life tour. “Honestly, it’s the biggest tour, production-wise and show wise, that we’ve ever done,” Glenn says of his summer act. “We’re playing a lot of the new album… and we have a lot of new production value in the show that’s really fun.” From opening for rock bands to headlining his own pop show, Glenn is changing the psychology of pop music with Neon Trees… and he is certainly just getting started. > With the oncoming school graduations, proms, and weddings I get asked how do I whiten my teeth the least expensive and invasive way? There are many tooth whitening systems on the market that do not require altering the tooth structure. I use the Opalescence Whitening System in my office. Questions I have been asked by patients.

IS IT SAFE? Yes. The primary ingredient in Opalescence is carbamide peroxide, which has been safely used to brighten millions of smiles worldwide.

HOW DOES IT WORK? Patient above after whitening, orthodontics & periodontics treatment.

There are several methods that can be used however the one that I found works the best and is the least time consuming is the chair side whitening that is done in the office. It takes approximately 1 hour. The Opalescence gel is applied to the teeth. The carbamide gel oxidizes and enters the enamel. This process bleaches out the discolored areas. The tooth structure is NOT changed. The color of the tooth is simply made lighter.

with Opalescence gel in it and they will use this for 2-3 days after the chair side procedure to achieve optimum natural whiteness.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS? There are a small number of people who may experience increased sensitivity to hot or cold during the whitening process. This is temporary and usually will go away within the first 48 hours after the whitening process is completed.

HOW LONG WILL IT LAST? The duration of your results depends on many factors. Practice good oral hygiene, and brushing regularly;especially after consuming staining foods or beverages. If you use staining substances like coffee, tobacco, and red wine you may need periodic touch-ups. Honestly, everyone has had some degree of whitening and have not been disappointed in their results. There is no way we can predict how white your teeth will get. If you have a question about whitening procedures or products consult your dentist or feel free to give my office a call at 407 678-4000. <

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE? Results are usually seen immediately .We then give the patient pre fabricated trays

Orlando’s

Elite Doctors

®

2014

> In prefacing this introduction, we’d like to offer an observation, which should be of interest to all. Regardless of medical school class rankings, graduates are all referred to as “DOCTOR.” With this revelation, we should all know that when choosing a physician, one must accept responsibility for adequately researching the doctor he or she is considering. Within our present day society, most licensed to practice medicine are truly miracle workers whether they are completely restructuring someone’s face or saving a life. As much as we realize that every physician is an asset to our community, we also know that some have established themselves at the top of their profession and are considered special; these are the ‘elite,’ the very best of the best. When seeking perfection, we search for the professional who has made it his or her life goal to excel within a field of specialization through many years of study, dedication and determination, continually challenging themselves to advance their knowledge; these brilliant human beings not only save lives but also enrich their communities with a skill set second to none. Beyond this and in order to stay abreast of the latest, almost daily changing medical advancements, the ‘elite’ undergo rigorous maintenance, updating through seminars, conferences and advanced studies to keep current with new technology and procedures. In adding our ‘Orlando’s Elite Doctors’ section with this issue, we present a group of physicians, all of whom are reputable, Board Certified in their areas of expertise, extremely well recognized within our community and chosen by their peers. Our objective is to initiate a continuing dialogue with our readers, with an aim toward personalizing some of the finest doctors available.< SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

a kid and absolutely love my work! I cannot imagine anything more fulfilling professionally than being a doctor that takes care of children. They are the most rewarding patients. I look forward to the clinical day because of the satisfaction I derive from my labor of love, serving children”. WHAT SETS US APART: CLASS is the only pediatric pulmonary and sleep medicine practice in Central Florida, with its own behavioral sleep medicine specialist. It offers a range of sleep services: sleep evaluations, sleep studies, and psychology and cognitive behavioral services. It has the most expansive network of office locations in Central, Florida. Each office offers full pulmonary function testing and consultation services, in conjunction with services in the management of asthma, pneumonia, sleep apnea, insomnia and allergic rhinitis conditions. In addition, the practice offers inpatient services at both Florida Hospital for Children and Arnold Palmer Hospital. DR. AJAYI’S PHILOSOPHY: “A physician should be a good listener and someone patients can depend on to do his very best regardless of the odds and assumed outcomes even when they appear inevitable. I believe that is what makes a good doctor.”

THE RIGHT DIAGNOSIS: No child should ever be treated for sleep apnea without having a clear diagnosis. It is important to understand the severity of sleep apnea and the benefits and the risks related to treatment before subjecting a child to surgery or CPAP. Conditions such as sleep apnea and sleep fragmentation can mimic behavioral disorders associated with ADHD; hence

early identification and treatment is important to avoid stigmatizing a child. When treating a child with conditions such as asthma, it is important to correctly diagnose and characterize the severity of the condition. Asthma affects how children sleep, play and learn. It is my goal to make sure kids can do all of these things with ease. IN THE COMMUNITY: It is my mission to develop a working relationship with educational institutions in Central Florida. Emphasizing the importance of consistent sleep/wake schedules, teaching school staff and families about how to facilitate the development of independent sleep skills in children of all ages, and quickly and accurately identifying children who are at-risk for sleep disorders. Teachers have a unique ability to observe students on a daily basis and are often the first to become aware of behavioral, learning, and emotional symptoms that may be a sign of inadequate or disrupted sleep. Teachers are our “first responders” and we are working to build awareness around making sleep a priority and increasing awareness of the critical importance of sleep on our daily lives. HOBBIES: Playing tennis, watching soccer and listening to jazz. < 2660 W. ORLANDO’S ELITE DOCTORS ® - 69

> Dr. Steven Brooks of Urology Consultants is partnered with his dear friend Dr. E. Jake Jacobo, with offices in Longwood, Winter Park and Oviedo. The two Urologists are entering their twenty fourth year together and are very proud of the tens of thousands of patients they have had the distinction of serving throughout Seminole and Orange County. It is quite a distinction that many of their patients have been with them since establishing their practice years ago. They have a legacy of excellent patient care and service to Central Florida. Dr. Brooks knew from an early age that he wanted to be a physician and started to work toward this goal early on in high school. He was the recipient of two National Science Foundation summer scholarship programs. As a consequence of his academic achievement, the doctor was one of a very small and select group of high school seniors accepted simultaneously to both college and medical school. He was one of only twenty students selected yearly for his program. Originally from New York, he received his medical degree from the University of Connecticut, graduating at the top of his class. He did his General Surgery training at the esteemed NYU/Bellevue in New York City, returning to the University of Connecticut for his Urology Residency. Dr. Brooks is Board certified and is honored to be in his ninth year as Chief of Surgery for South Seminole Hospital. Dr. Brooks has had an interest in research having published and presented his first research paper as only a college freshman. He has continued his interest in research within his medical practice as a principal investigator for a number of investigational medications and medical devices. In 1997 he was honored to be invited to present the key note address at the launch of one of these medications, with this medicine eventually becoming one of the most frequently prescribed therapies, world wide, for the enlarged prostrate. As a key opinion leader, he has published, and lectured nationally on topics related to the enlarged prostate and has been on a number of national advisory boards. He has preceptored nationally on various surgical procedures. Both Dr. Brooks and Jacobo are of only a handful of Urologists in the United States

skilled at the Radical Perineal Prostatectomy; a minimally invasive, approximately one hour, cost effective surgical procedure for prostate cancer allowing for immediate resumption of diet and typically, discharge the following morning. Dr. Brooks believes this technique offers advantages to robotic prostatectomy. Cumulatively, the two physicians may be the most experienced surgeons on this surgical approach for prostate cancer. He is skilled at all aspects of Urology including the treatment of kidney stones, ED, incontinence, the treatment of prostate, kidney, bladder, and testicular cancers. Dr. Brooks is also an accomplished implant surgeon with over twenty years experience with penile implants and artificial urinary sphincters. He finds vasectomy reversals to be very rewarding and has enjoyed great success at this procedure, which he provides at a very reasonable fee. Although hospital affiliated, Urology Consultants remains an independent practice. You can be sure that you will see Dr. Brooks personally at every visit and he has a wonderful and experienced staff, some of which having been with the doctor for over twenty years. The doctor provides personally dictated notes to your referring physicians, and believes patient education is a critical component of patient care. Known for his kind heart, sense of humor and his compassion Dr. Brooks makes an effort to get to know each of his patients personally, adhering to the strong belief that you have to treat the whole patient, particularly when dealing with sensitive issues such as cancer, incontinence, voiding dysfunction, sexual dysfunction and illness in general. He shares in his patient’s medical triumphs and is by their side during difficult times. Dr. Brooks recently married Shannon, the woman of his dreams, who he had the good fortune of meeting on a flight to Las Vegas. Together, they hope to start a family. Shannon is Director of Marketing for Urology Consultants. He begins each day with a spirited run. He and Shannon continue to enjoy Abby, their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy! Dr. Brooks is pleased to announce that since last being honored as one the best physicians in Orlando, Abby has finally been house trained. <

DR. RAYMOND RAMIREZ Advanced Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery

> Dr. Raymond Ramirez is board certified by the American Board of Osteopathic Dermatology. He earned his medical degree in 1997 from NovaSoutheastern University, College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his Family Medicine residency, during which time he discovered his true love in medicine was for dermatology. In pursuit of this passion, Dr. Ramirez worked as a malignant melanoma research fellow for three years at the University of California at San Francisco’s Mount Zion Cancer Center. This was followed by a year of dermatology medication research at Northwestern University. He completed his dermatology residency at Lutheran Medical Center in New York. DR. RAMIREZ’S PRACTICE: Dr. Ramirez practices dermatology for Advanced Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery, in Heathrow. His practice is in medical dermatology with an emphasis on skin cancers, especially malignant melanoma. Photo by Steven Miller Photography

Advanced Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery 120 International Pkwy, Ste. 240 Heathrow, FL 32746 P: 407-333-4200 F: 407-829-6637 OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

Dr. Ramirez feels that it is vital to ensure that his patients are as informed as possible of their conditions and his plan for medical care. “I don’t want to just dictate ‘the plan’ to a patient without informing them of what I am treating and why I’m recommending a certain medication or procedure. There is often more than one way to treat a condition and I’d rather design a care plan that will work best for an individual patient. Informing the patient about their condition, the rationale of a proposed treatment, and possible outcomes to expect, empowers patients to be an active, informed participant in their care.” SHARING THE KNOWLEDGE: Dr. Ramirez is dedicated to education of both the public and his fellow medical professionals about sun protection, skin cancers, and especially malignant melanoma. He has given numerous talks on these important issues for charitable SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

organizations, area businesses, and governmental enitities. He has also lectured at the UCF College of Medicine and is an adjunct professor with Nova-Southeastern University. Dr. Ramirez regularly trains medical students, interns, and physician assistants. Dr. Ramirez’s primary focus in his training is the art of the ‘differential diagnosis’. When working with students, Dr. Ramirez can be regularly heard making them list off different possible diagnoses for each case they see. “Look, Dermatology is a specialty with a three year residency. That’s why there isn’t a smartphone ‘Match the Skin Spot’ App! For every type of skin lesion there are several possible diagnoses ranging from infections to autoimmune disorders to skin cancers or benign growths. A lot of these things can ‘look’ the same. We narrow down these possibilities based not only on what it looks like, but also on the history, changes, symptoms, etc. As dermatologists, we have to recognize the rare things that can be a danger. If we don’t look for the rare things, we won’t find them, they’ll eventually find us and bad things can result.” OUTSIDE THE OFFICE: Raymond has been happily married to his wife, Elizabeth, for nearly nineteen years. They have two active teenagers, Daniel (age 16) and Kristen (age 13). Between soccer, dance, surfing, longboarding, and being teenagers, Raymond’s main hobby is just being ‘Taxi Cab Ray’! Nevertheless, he cherishes the time he gets to spend with his wife and family. He and his son, Daniel, have recently earned their lifeguard certification together (yes, he did wear his sunscreen!). In two years, he plans to take the course again with his daughter, Kristen. Beyond his daily parental obligations, Raymond and his family love planning family trips and dressing up in funny costumes for 5K and mud runs! <

GEOFFREY STEWART, M.D. Reconstructive Spine Surgeon

> Dr. Geoffrey Stewart‘s reputation has been built on his dedication to providing the utmost in compassionate and quality care to all his patients. His extensive training and knowledge coupled with his years of experience and favorable outcomes has afforded him worldwide accolades and recognition.

Dr. Stewart is Board Certified by both the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and the American Board of Spine Surgery. He was named a Fellow of the prestigious International College of Surgeons. He earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and completed his Orthopedic training in Boston at Tufts University Affiliated Hospitals and the Massachusetts General Hospital. He then completed the Maryland Fellowship in Reconstructive Spinal Surgery in Baltimore, Maryland, incorporating both orthopedic and neurosurgical spine training at Johns Hopkins Hospital and St. Joseph’s Medical Center. He has authored a number of articles on spine surgery, and his research has won awards at major scientific meetings. He has been awarded a number of patents on medical devices for improving spine surgery. Dr. Stewart states, “I remain active in teaching and research, as an Assistant Professor of Orthopedics at the UCF School of Medicine and as an Instructor in Orthopedics for the Orlando Health Orthopedic Residency Program. My passion, however, is in clinical practice treating patients with spine disorders.”

Dr. Stewart has won the Top Doctors Award multiple times and he also won the Patient’s Choice Award in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2013. The Consumer’s Research Council of America has award-

ed him America’s Top Orthopedist Award in 2008 and 2010. The International Association of Orthopedic Surgeons recognizes Dr. Stewart as “A Leading Physician of the World”. Castle Connolly awarded him Top Doctor for Orthopaedic Spine Surgery in 2011, and in 2013 he was chosen by his peers to receive the Top Doctors Award as an expert in Spine Surgery. Dr. Stewart is the Director of the Heart of Florida Spine Center, the only central Florida center to be awarded the Healthgrades Five-Star Orthopedic Excellence Award for Spine surgery. Dr. Stewart specializes in the treatment of adult and pediatric spinal disorders. He joined the Spine and Scoliosis Center in 1996, a practice which has been giving Central Floridians practical, highquality solutions through revolutionary care for over fifty years. Understanding the personal impact of a patient’s condition is just as important to the practice as providing the latest in innovative spine procedures. One advantage of the practice is onsite pain management. Patients can receive evaluation and treatment in the same location, limiting the need for multiple appointments. < “Our practice is unique due to our ongoing combination of clinical practice, teaching, and research. This leaves us with cutting edge technological knowhow combined with years of handson experience. We can excel at nonsurgical management, minimally invasive surgery and the most complicated reconstructive spine surgery procedures. Our tremendous outcomes on some of the most complex surgeries performed in the country is testimony to how well our practice philosophy and experience works,” says Dr. Stewart.

SUPERFOODS

How To Eat Your Way To Young Skin, Fuller Hair And A Whiter Smile. By Beauty Nutritionist Paula Simpson

FEWER WRINKLES Try eating soy. Research shows that estrogen-like chemicals called isoflavones, of which soy is a rich source, help keep the skin furrow-free. You’ll get beauty benefits from it in its whole forms: Tofu, edamame (soybeans).

LESS PUFFY EYES If you have under-eye bags, downsize them by stripping excess salt from your diet. You may associate fluid retention with a bloated belly, but our faces also swell from too much sodium. You can also deflate your peepers by adding potassium to your diet, aim for 4.7 grams a day by filling your plate with bananas, sweet potatoes, avocados and cooked lentils.

WHITER TEETH Keep your pearly whites bright with cheese! Highly acidic foods like citrus, soda and berries leave your teeth vulnerable to stains from the acid left behind. Some major delinquents include spaghetti sauce, red wine, cola and coffee. To keep your teeth untarnished, eat a piece of cheese after you indulge. Studies suggest that its higher pH level will neutralize the acid and safeguard your smile. OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

AGE-SPOT-FREE SKIN Your first line of defense is sunscreen, but you can boost your skin’s natural SPF by eating lycopene, a type of carotenoid found in red and pink produce. Tomatoes, watermelon, pink grapefruit and red peppers all contain lycopene. Your body absorbs the most from cooked products like tomato paste, sauce and soup.

o r l a N d o, G r a N d e l a k e s

LESS ACNE Eating foods like sweets and refined carbohydrates can jumpstart oil production, leading to clogged pores. Red meat is the richest source of zinc. If you’re a vegetarian, opt for lentils, pumpkin seeds, kidney beans and raw oysters.

GREAT BONE STRUCTURE As bones lose volume and recede, your skin can begin to sag. Keep your bones strong with high-calcium diet sources like fortified lowfat yogurt or milk, soymilk, kale, spinach, and tofu. Vitamin K2—found in low-fat cottage cheese and chicken—and magnesium—found in whole grains, leafy green vegetables and almonds—are also key players in having strong bones.

THICKER HAIR

Norman’s showcases the menu of legendary Chef Norman Van aken, internationally known as ‘the founding father of New World Cuisine.’ Chef Norman is the only Floridian to be inducted into the prestigious “James Beard list of ‘Who’s Who.’” We are located on the lobby level of the ritz-Carlton Grande lakes. For reservations please call (407) 393-4333.

Rx for strong and silky tresses? Protein, iron and zinc. Red meat is a great source of iron and zinc. Other good choices include pork and grass-fed beef. When eating poultry, go with dark meat, which has twice as much iron and zinc. If you don’t do meat, fill up on pepitas (hulled pumpkin seeds), lentils and kidney beans. paulasimpson.com 4012 Central Florida Pkwy. orlando, Fl 32837 | www.normans.com

The B officially opened its doors in June and brought a new genre in hospitality to Central Florida – focusing on self-expression, style and technology. “B Resort & Spa is the first resort designation for the B Hotels & Resorts brand and we are thrilled to introduce travelers to such an incredible, unique product in one of the world’s top business and leisure travel destinations,” said Keith Wolling, the property’s general manager. “This is a four-star resort with attractive prices and a team that is committed to delivering unforgettable, customized experiences to virtually every type of traveler.” In an era when millennials make up 50 percent of hotel bookings, more and more brands strive to attract this tech-savvy, diverse generation. The millennials’ pull toward self-expression and technology has influenced older generations as well, pushing hospitality companies to rebrand their image. B Hotels & Resorts, headquartered in South Florida, focuses on each guest’s personality, building an “emotional connection” between each traveler and the B brand. The building that was once the Royal Plaza Hotel, where Michael Jackson once had a suite, underwent an extensive renovation and now offers one OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

of the first lifestyle hotel experiences in Orlando. In the lobby, a white tea and thyme scent creates a spa atmosphere, while the cascading waterfall, the room’s focal point, evokes tranquility. The B Ambiance® continues onto the adjoining B Social area comprised of contemporary furnishings, vibrant rugs and wall art. White marble floors, white walls and a lacquer front desk add to the lobby’s sleek décor. Guests can B in Touch® 24/7 thanks to the resort-wide FreeB Wi-Fi, complimentary loaner iPads, available at the front desk, and the Monscierge® digital concierge service and destination guide. Large touch-screens in the lobby provide guests instant access to information, including weather forecasts, flight updates, local tips and much more. The Monscierge® can be accessed via a mobile application too. Adjacent to the B Social area, American Q, an innovative dining concept developed in partnership with Jeffrey Chodorow and China Grill Management, showcases “a modern take on classic barbeque.” The signature restaurant offers barbeque specialties from around the U.S. and Latin America. One of its main attractions is the ’50 red Ford F1 pickup truck where patrons enjoy a salad and appetizer station served from its bed. The restaurant’s rustic design elements, like its Mason jar chandeliers, along with spontaneous line dances, further authenticate the experience. Additional

dining options, offering grab-and-go snacks and locally sourced healthful dishes, are available in the hotel. Another signature amenity is the B Indulged® Spa by Aveda, where guests can “customize their experience” and even enjoy cocktails, or a light fare, before or after a treatment. The hotel also offers the B Active Fitness Center® and four tennis courts. In addition, the 25,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor function space make the resort a great venue for various events. Suites and family-friendly guestrooms are part of the B Ambience®, each room featuring designer furnishings and a large HD LED interactive flat-screen TV. Some guestrooms have bunk beds, kitchenettes and wet bars. As part of the brand’s B Humane® program, a plush toy gopher frog is placed in each room. Guests can “adopt” the toy to take home, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Wildlife Foundation of Florida. Rooms located in the 17-story tower offer gorgeous views of the area, inviting you to B spellbound by the evening firework displays! While the lanai rooms’ proximity to the interactive pool and kids’ zone makes it ideal for young families. DOG DAYS OF SUMMER: 6 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR DOG COOL By Cathleen K. Bode

> As the Florida sun begins to shine brighter, your dog deserves the best protection from the hot and humid weather. We know how wonderful it is to spend a warm summer day out with your pooch, so here are some great ways to keep your dog cool, happy & healthy all summer long. 1: Adjust your dog’s exercise routine. Although it is important to continue your dog’s exercise routine in the summer months, you should change your dog’s walking time to early in the morning or late in the evening when the temperature is lower. Also, if your dog gets overheated easily while walking, try taking your dog for a swim instead, as this is one of the best workouts for canines. 2: Try a pair of doggie boots. If you don’t have the opportunity to walk your dog early or late in the day, doggie boots will protect your pet’s paws from getting burned from the scorching concrete. Also, as heat rises from the ground, dogs take in this heat through the surface of their paws. Using doggie boots are a great way to protect your pet’s paws. Touch the ground with your hand. If it’s too hot to the touch then it’s too hot for Fido! 3: Keep your dog hydrated.

NO MATTER HOW MANY PRECAUTIONS YOU TAKE TO PROTECT YOUR DOG FROM THE FLORIDA HEAT, SOMETIMES IT’S JUST BEST TO KEEP YOUR DOG OUT OF THE SUN.

Making sure your dog has plenty of water is vital! Different dogs have specific hydration needs when the temperature rises, and learning about your breed’s necessities is a must. Dogs with heavy or darker coats absorb heat faster, so these dogs will need to be near water sources more frequently than other breeds. If your dog is overweight, you should keep a bottle of water with you during walks, as your dog will need to hydrate more often. 4: Use a variety of ways to cool your dog. If you are spending your day at an outdoor location, such as a dog park or at the beach, you can still use

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

innovative techniques to keep your dog cool. Find a shaded area, place a kiddie pool there, fill it with water, and add some ice cubes to cool the water in which your pooch can relax. Laying down a cold, wet towel for your dog will also provide a chilled place to rest. If you are planning to take your dog outside for several hours at a time, you may want to set up a fan in front of a bucket of ice, so your best friend will have a constant source of cool breezes. 5: Listen to your instincts. No matter how many precautions you take to protect your dog from the Florida heat, sometimes it’s just best to keep your dog out of the sun. If it’s too hot, you may want to bring your dog quickly back inside, so keep your walks short, give your dog time to do the ‘necessary’ stuff and play inside. Mentally challenging games are very effective for those hot, sunny days for your ‘best friend’ to relieve tension and boredom. 6: Never, ever leave your pets in a car. Not even for a minute! The temperature in the car rises faster than you think and dogs can’t cool down as humans can. One reason for this is your dog wears his fur coat all year round. And while dogs do have sweat glands on their feet, they do not have them on the rest of their body. They rely on panting, a method of breathing out excess heat, to cool down their bodies. This method is not as effective as sweating as we humans do. The major cause of heatstroke in dogs is leaving a dog in a parked car. Even with the windows cracked on a 70° F to 80° F day, while it may feel comfortable outside, the inside of your car can heat up to over 100° F in minutes! So if your going to take Fido for a ride make sure that air condition is running on high!! <
