Sven’s“Huggable Security”
Once again, the holiday season is upon us, and this is the perfect time to give what we can to those in need. I encourage you all to give to someone less fortunate or support a charitable organization to help a worthy cause.
HUGGABLE SECURITY
This Holiday Issue is full of amazing gift ideas for all of the loved ones on your list, including incredible shopping deals and offers! You’ll find everything to get you in the holiday spirit this year.
Now that our penthouse is sold, another couple can enjoy the breathtaking views over Big and Little Sand Lake, with walking distance to Restaurant Row. We hope they will be very happy there. As for Cathleen, myself, and our “huggable security,” our Shep, we have built an amazing new home with all the features that a big dog needs, including a lakefront yard with enough space to run and play.
This is also the time of year when Cathleen and I want to thank everyone who plays a role in making our magazine the premiere luxury lifestyle publication in our region. We could not do it without the support of our fantastic advertisers, so please support them as much as you can. We give a big, heartfelt Thank You to our wonderful, loyal readers and subscribers. The soul of this publication is the result of the fine work of our dedicated team and contributors. To all of you, we cannot thank you enough. We anticipate great things ahead and look forward to the coming year.
Our new property provides our dog with exactly what he wants, but we also thought about our own needs as well. We are very happy to now live in a more tranquil area with countryside like atmosphere. The city of Orlando has so many lovely real estate options, and when compared to the infrastructure and amenities of other locations of the world, the prices here are incredibly reasonable. We often find ourselves astonished when we watch HGTV’s House Hunters International because home prices, even in remote corners of the world, are at an unbelievable high. A luxury house in Vietnam is priced at $400 per square foot, a 600 square foot apartment in Paris sells for over $1 million, and a 1000 square foot shack in Hawaii can cost more than $500,000, not to mention homes in New York City, Los Angeles or San Francisco. Fortunately, the Orlando area currently has homes that are at a great value, and anyone who is considering purchasing real estate should act fast while prices are still low!
From all of us here at Orlando Style, we would like to wish every one of you and your family a very happy holiday, filled with joy at Christmas and a wonderful New Year! Shanah Tovah, Bonne Année, Gutes Neues Jahr, Akemashite Omedetou Gozaimasu, Antum Salimoun, Feliz Año Nuevo, Buon Capo d’Anno, Naye Varsha Ki Shubhkamanyen … and to all, a Peaceful and Happy New Year! Sincerely,
Sven J. Bode, Publisher

GRAND TOUR GALA 2014 The Biggest Night of Travel, Tourism and Hospitality Recognition in Central Florida! By Cathleen K. Bode / Photos by Brion Price
England may be
over 4,000 miles away, but that wasn’t far enough to stop the British Invasion from occurring on November 1, 2014 when the Hilton Orlando was transformed into London for Grand Tour Gala 2014! If you’re a seasoned reader of Orlando Style then it’ll be hard to forget the Grand Tour Gala 2014 “Launch Party in London” event we covered back in the spring. Hosted by the
Orlando Chapter of the National Association for Catering and Events (NACE), the event gave attendees a sneak preview of what to look forward to at the annual Grand Tour Gala charity fundraiser. That preview left everyone eager for the highly anticipated event and fortunately we didn’t have to wait too long. Grand Tour Gala 2014 took place on November 1st at Hilton Orlando and it was a phenomenal, much deserved success.
Since its inception just 3 short years ago, the Grand Tour Gala has raised more than $180,000 for distribution in student scholarships and programs. Proceeds from the annual event provide scholarships benefiting students at the University of Central Florida Rosen College of Hospitality Management, Valencia Community College, Daytona State College, Mid-Florida Tech Orlando, the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association Educational Foundation and NACE Education Foundation. OUT & ABOUT
“GRAND TOUR GALA 2014 PROVED TO BE A SHOW STOPPER WITH AMAZING BRITISH LOOKALIKES”
Attendees of Grand Tour Gala 2014 cheered loudly in support and appreciation as the 2014 Dick Pope Legacy Awards were handed out during the evening’s award ceremony. Recipients at this year’s event included Steve Hogan, CEO of Florida Citrus Sports; Adrian Jones, General Manager of LEGOLAND® Florida Resort and VP Merlin Entertainments USA; Richard Kessler, Chairman and CEO of Kessler Collection Hotels; and Emeril Lagasse, Celebrity Chef and Host of TV’s Emeril’s Florida. The Dick Pope Legacy Award was designed to honor leaders who strengthen the sustainability of Florida’s hospitality and tourism industries. The award was established in honor of Dick Pope Sr., who founded Cypress Gardens as the state’s first park-like attraction in Winter Haven in 1936. Pope was considered one of Florida’s greatest promoters after the development of the attraction brought Florida’s tourism industry to life after World War II. The extravagant evening didn’t stop at the handing out of this prestigious award. This year’s Gala provided guests with a unique London experience featuring an entire evening of festivities filled with unique foods, Broadway-style entertainment, a silent auction, concierge-level guest services and a gourmet four-course dinner. Of course an event this big doesn’t just happen on its own! Grand Tour Gala 2014 encompassed the involvement
of no less than 45 of Orlando’s hospitality, entertainment and event companies who all donated or greatly reduced their costs in order to deliver the London themed “party of all parties” for the industry. “Our audience is the best of the best in travel, tourism and hospitality so we involve the industry’s best providers to create one of the hottest events they will attend this year, “ said Dr. Mary Jo Ross CSEP, CPCE, professor at The University of Central Florida Rosen College of Hospitality Management, who is executive producer of Grand Tour Gala. Along with Dr. Ross, the Grand Tour Gala Charity Fundraiser is produced by the Orlando Chapter of the National Association of Catering and Events (NACE), led by President Patricia Buchanan. Ross and Buchanan were joined this year by dozens of the city’s finest in producers, designers, florists, entertainers, musicians, vocalists, chefs and many others who brought their best foot forward to transform the Hilton Orlando into a gorgeous, London themed venue for Grand Tour Gala 2014. Some of these bright stars in Orlando’s entertainment and special event industries included Remmal Karamsadkar who served as lead designer of the show. Karamsadkar is the owner/designer and principal at Occasions by Shangri-la. The lead florist of the event was Randy Lowe, 20 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
founder and CEO of Lowe and Behold. Providing and overseeing entertainment was Joshua Vickery, founder and executive director for Central Florida Community Arts and Tara Snyder, musical theatre voice specialist and assistant professor for Theatre UCF. “Each year we provide a unique and high quality event for those who come join us and this year will be no different. We definitely keep raising the bar,” said NACE Orlando’s Buchanan. Grand Tour Gala 2014 proved to be a show stopper with amazing British lookalikes, a half-steer of British beef on rotisserie display, the music scene’s famous British Invasion and of course, Mr. James Bond. After the event, guests put on their dancing shoes and got down for the “London-A-Go-Go!” after glow dance party. Grand Tour Gala 2014 was a truly wonderful evening of honoring some of the industry’s finest and raising funds that will help to encourage and support even more champions of Florida’s tourism industry. For more information on the Grand Tour Gala 2014 annual benefit, be sure to check out grandtourgala.com. Be on the look out for the Grand Tour Gala in 2015!

Tis’ the season to be jolly and we have plenty to be happy about! We’re just days away from celebrating the end of another fantastic, fun filled year in this beautiful city and what better way to look ahead to the future then by taking one last glance back at our past? October and November were especially jam-packed months full of good times, memorable events and plenty of turkey. Here’s a look back at some of the fun, just in case you missed it! Now you see it, now you don’t! For four glorious nights from October 27th-30th, the Historic Dr. Phillips House was transformed into the “Magic Mansion” but before you could say “abracadabra,” all was back to normal again. Hopefully those four days didn’t pass by too quickly, because if you missed out then you missed out on one unbelievable event! The “Magic Mansion” was open from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM daily for an interactive, close-up magic experience. Attendees of all ages spent hours at the mansion, taking in all the mind-boggling illusions and enjoying the elegant, sleight-of-hand magic from various performers. From card tricks to mind reading that left even the biggest skeptic’s mouth agape, it was 4 thrilling days of magic and unforgettable fun.

Located in the former Festival Bay Mall, Artegon Marketplace Orlando is a new shopping concept for the area inspired by such famous marketplaces as Seattle’s Pike Place, Boston’s Faneuil Hall, New York’s Chelsea Market and the London Flower Market. The celebration began with a ribboncutting ceremony featuring Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and other dignitaries representing the region’s tourism and hospitality industries. The grand opening festivities continued through Nov. 22 with live entertainment ranging from amazing African acrobats to a memorable musical treat by the Blues Brothers. Guests of the grand opening were among the first to experience Artegon’s expansive “Sky Trail” ropes course and collection of 165 artisanal shops and stores featuring locally sourced products and services. The forecast is in and it’s “Now Snowing Nightly” in Florida! It’s one of Orlando’s most beloved holiday traditions and last month it came early to the City Beautiful as select guests came together on November 22nd for a media preview of the 16th Annual Now Snowing event at Celebration Town Center. Every winter, Celebration is transformed into a month long winter wonderland featuring strolling Charles Dickens Carolers, community performers, horse drawn carriages, the Celebration Express train, nightly snowfall and more! Guest of the VIP preview event enjoyed free ice skating, free rides on the attractions and of course a free photo op with Mr. Clause. How does Celebration bring nightly snow to the sunshine state? Only one way to find out! Snowfall and other holiday fun happens at 6, 7, 8 and 9 PM every night through December 31st at Celebration Town Center. Know of a Not-To-Be Missed Event? Do Tell!

LOSE THE COAT, KEEP THE CAPE Winter-wear for the Florida Weather By Natasha Gault
With twinkling lights aglow
and the smell of peppermint in the air, we have entered the season of Layers.
Leading us into the depths of winter ar e tr ends of classic knitwear, turtlenecks, coats, coats, and more coats. Consider a few lighter winter wear trends that are easy to incorporate into your wardrobe, keeping you warm but not too toasty. Our favorites this season include structured capes, airy ponchos, simple fur vests, and functional stoles. These key items can dress up or down any look, always keeping you looking chic and cozy. Capes have been a focus all year long among celebrities and designers alike, with celeb favorites such as Emma Stone, Kelly Osbourne, and Kate Hudson donning cape dresses to red carpet events. These staples can add a sophisticated touch to any look, whether the thermometer reads 48 or 84. Another way to integrate another layer of elegance and warmth is to incorporate a stole into your outfit. A stole illuminates the beauty of a wrap with an optional feature of pockets; perfect if you’re looking to lose the gloves. The Burberry Reversible Check and Shearling Fur Stole with Pockets is a smart choice for our uncertain weather as it combines many of this year’s favorite and most useful fashion trends. An unanticipated trend this winter is the indulgence in a variety of color palettes such as pastels, blues, oranges, and grays. A brilliant way to feature these colors with your current wardrobe is to mix and match with darker colors, blending the visual

warmth of your favorite spring collection with the lighter, airy “Florida Winter” appropriate pieces in your closet. Orange is definitely the new black this season with designer collections adding unanticipated rich hues, as seen in the Balmain Fall/Winter 2014 Ready-To-Wear Fashion Show. These pops of color are great ways to brighten up the not-so-white winter season. Whether you’re preparing for a holiday party or counting down the Ball Drop this season, anticipate the abrupt climate changes with outfits of layers and the option of hot or iced coffee. And remember, while we may be missing out on heavy coats and snowmen, we’re avoiding snow-ins and midnight freezes. So cozy up in your favorite stole, keep your friends and family close and your holidays merry and bright.

CELEBRITY SOUP
Hollywood’s biggest children and their outrageous demands! By Riesa Pascal
From singers and actors to athletes and TV personalities... what is it about fame and fortune that can turn even the sweetest celeb into a controlling, narcissistic diva? Up and coming stars always swear they’ll never let their fame get the best of them and fortunately some celebs do manage to avoid a first class seat on the diva train. But, for every dozen who remain kind-hearted, considerate and true to themselves, there’s still that one high-maintenance celeb who’s an absolute nightmare to work with. Here are just a few of the most infamous celebrity divas.

Ariana Grande
This year it’s been impossible to turn on the radio without hearing Ariana Grande belting out one of her many hit songs. At just 21 years old, the ex-Nickelodeon star is living the dream, but despite her success, the “Problem” singer is currently being plagued with reports that she is a big problem to work with. Any internet search of “Ariana Grande Diva” brings up page after page of various articles about the pint-sized prima donna and her ridiculous, pushy requests. Most recently, Australian photographer Chris Pavlich said Grande refused to be photographed from her right side or with natural light and eventually abandoned their session mid-shoot. According to the report, the singer was “checking each frame after it was taken and asking for shots she wasn’t pleased with to be deleted. After a few minutes she left the hotel suite, complaining to her reps that she was unhappy with how her top looked in the poses.” Grande’s rep eventually demanded that Pavlich delete all of his photos. After refusing, he claims a member of the Grande’s security team followed him out and attempted to prevent him from closing the tailgate on his car as he stowed his equipment. Similar horror stories from even Grande’s loyal fans prove that she might not be as sweet in private as she appears to be in public.
Rihanna
Rihanna was just a teenager when she rose to fame nearly 10 years ago. Being exposed to Hollywood at such a young age certainly had its effects on the young pop star who quickly grew up to develop a reputation for being a diva. While on a shoot for “Where Have You Been,” the singer reportedly requested a king-sized bed so she could nap between takes and also demanded that no one bring bananas on set because she hates them. Sources close to the singer say that Rihanna also insisted that her dressing room be draped in black or dark blue drapes with icy blue chiffon draped nicely on top. Rihanna is often known to send her staff out on random errands and hunts for her favorite items, no matter how far or trivial the item may be. While in Sweden, the star reportedly sent her assistant on a hunt for Mexican food and refused to go onstage until she got carne asada. By the time he returned from an hour away, the food was cold which subsequently led Rihanna to throw a fit only worthy of a Hollywood diva. 49 STYLETOME.COM

Mariah Carey
If you look up “diva” in the dictionary, you shouldn’t be surprised to see a picture of Mariah Carey. Although the Grammy-award winning singer undeniably has the credentials to back up the title, does that mean her diva behavior is justified and acceptable? According to Kate Garraway of London’s Good Morning Television, Carey made crazy demands when she was in the UK to promote the movie “Precious.” Garraway claims that Carey arrived with an entourage larger than the entire GMTV crew and that it was their job to make sure she looked perfect on air. Carey made two people lower her onto the morning show’s sofa to keep her from crushing her dress and reportedly even brought her own toilet roll to the set. Not diva enough for you? During a Christmas lighting event in London, Carey reportedly insisted on being surrounded by 20 white kittens and 100 white doves for her appearance and demanded to be showered in butterfly-shaped confetti during the end of her performance. As with any reported diva, Carey has claimed most of these reports are overblown. “I am baffled, shocked and appalled when I am called a diva,” she has said. “I’ve never done a diva-ish thing in my life.”
Kanye West
Although it’s mostly the female celebs who get the diva title, there is still the occasional male who gets to share the crown. Kanye West is a great example of a celeb who seems to have taken a page out of Mariah Carey’s diva book. The 37-year-old rapper is fast becoming one of the most high maintenance figures in the industry. West caused quite a stir on BBC’s “Later With Jools Holland,” when he made a series of outrageous requests before taking to the stage to perform. Upon arriving at the studio, Kanye ordered the entire set be pulled down and rebuilt to his specific requirements. He then insisted the décor of his dressing room be all white and asked the BBC staff to iron his dressing room carpet because it was too bumpy for his liking. Even though Sting and Kings of Leon were also booked, the male diva was adamant that his entourage be allowed to take up more than half of the 15 dressing rooms that were available.

Anyone who has been in the business for as long as Beyoncé has definitely acquired a taste for making some very specific diva demands and the “Love on Top” singer is no different. While on tour, Beyoncé reportedly asked for alkaline water, new seats on every toilet and red toilet paper. She also allegedly required all her crewmembers to wear 100 percent cotton and demanded that her water be chilled to 21 degrees and served through $900 titanium straws. For performances at U.K.’s O2 arena, not only did Beyoncé use the venue’s newly refurbished luxury dressing rooms, she also took up a space typically used to accommodate entire sports teams. At least in her lyrics to “Diva,” the singer acknowledges the fact that she’s the “number one diva in this game” and is booked for a one-way ride on the diva train. 51 STYLETOME.COM

DON’T MISS THE BEAT
IDINA MENZEL HOLIDAY WISHES By Courtney Caggiano
From making a
name for herself on Broadway to starring on the silver screen, Idina Menzel has become America’s latest singing sensation and continues to climb to the top. She’s the voice behind the sweetly supernatural Queen Elsa of Disney’s Frozen, an unforgettable character who has found her way onto anything from children’s costumes to coffee mugs, and many would agree that Menzel’s performance has dubbed the songstress herself worthy enough to be a queen. Now, a year after the release of this record-breaking animated film, Menzel is keeping the winter spirit alive with her first Christmas album, Holiday Wishes.
52 STYLETOME.COM
DON’T MISS THE BEAT
Holiday Wishes is full of festive tracks to get you in the spirit for the most wonderful time of the year, and it features some of the most iconic numbers, from “The Christmas Song” to “White Christmas.” Produced by Walter Afanaseiff, who wrote Mariah Carey’s smash hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” this album not only shows of Menzel’s powerful vocals, but it also gives a new interpretation to some of these Christmas favorites. Menzel’s version of “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is a completely alternative take of the original with a compelling arrangement by Afanaseiff. Because of her Jewish background, critics and audiences alike were surprised at Menzel’s choice to release a Christmas album, but the singer views her latest project simply as a way to share the joy that music can bring to anyone during this time of year. The holiday season is especially difficult for Menzel, whose parents split up on Thanksgiving Day when she was young, so she wanted to ensure that this album not only keeps people in the holiday spirit, but also encourages those who have yet to discover it. “I’ve always felt that Christmas albums were a sensitive thing,” Menzel says. “To sing happy music in peoples’ faces is sometimes not always the way to go. I wanted to make sure I did something that covered everyone’s experience during the holidays.” Holiday Wishes certainly covers every various emotion, with titles that range from the upbeat and cheerful “Holly Jolly Christmas” to the melancholy melody of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” But the album is not just a montage of classic holiday anthems that constantly fill the air this time of year; Menzel includes one of her favorite Christmas-themed songs, Joni Mitchell’s “River,” a unique choice that makes Holiday Wishes stand out among the other compilations of Christmas favorites. Menzel also shows her audience that she is
not just a pretty voice; she is an established songwriter with her own original song to prove it. “December Prayer,” one of the more highly anticipated tracks on the album, was written by Menzel herself. As well as an accomplished singer and songwriter, Menzel has had quite an accoladelaced background on the Great White Way. In 2003, Menzel starred in Broadway’s enchanting musical Wicked, in which she received the 2004 Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. Recently, Menzel returned to the Broadway scene in 2014 in the musical If/Then. For this performance, Menzel gained a nomination for her second Tony award. This successful stage career launched Menzel into film, where her experienced vocals received worldwide popularity as they shined in Frozen’s soundtrack hit, “Let it Go.” Menzel even performed Elsa’s anthem at the 2014 Academy Awards, which won the title of Best Original Song. Although fame seems to follow Menzel wherever she turns, she always focuses on giving to those less fortunate than herself. In 2010, she founded A BroaderWay Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing girls from underprivileged communities opportunities for creative and educational arts programs. While this philanthropy develops the natural talents of artistic children, it also allows students to build self-confidence in themselves through their artwork.
she is currently continuing her performance in If/Then, which is showing in New York’s Richard Rodgers Theatre. This winter, even if you may not find yourself in the big city catching a Broadway show, you can capture the essence of Menzel’s musical phenomenon by picking up your copy of Holiday Wishes. Whether a stocking stuffer for your loved ones or a cozy addition to decking the halls, Holiday Wishes is the perfect way to bring Menzel home for the holidays.
“ALTHOUGH FAME SEEMS TO FOLLOW MENZEL WHEREVER SHE TURNS, SHE ALWAYS FOCUSES ON GIVING TO THOSE LESS FORTUNATE THAN HERSELF.”
There is much to expect from this Broadway beauty in the coming year. Next Spring, Menzel is said to reprise her role as Elsa in Disney’s Frozen Fever, an animated spinoff short that is sure to please the biggest Frozen fans, and

Sparkling Wine Cocktails Perfect for Sipping or Celebrating in Style By Cathleen K. Bode
Graduation: Pop goes the cork; Engaged: There it goes again; Weddings: Get ready for a round of champagne toasts. In America, we celebrate with bubbly – be it Champagne, Prosecco or cava. Big bubbles, tiny bubbles, pink bubbles elevate the cocktail experience. But what about using Champagne or sparkling wine as the key ingredient in cocktails? According to the experts, sparkling cocktails should be enjoyed no matter what the occasion. Mike Khorosh, Operations Manager and Beverage Director for NYC’s NYY Steak says, “My preference for sparkling wine cocktails is to use Champagne. It adds a level of complexity and structure to the beverage that others just don’t match.” One of the signature cocktails at NYY Steak, a new destination for power lunches and dinners located in the
midtown area of New York City is the All Star Cocktail. Simple, elegant and full of sparkle. Priced at $16 this All Star is popular with guests before dinner as an aperitif, often in place of a glass of wine. Kim Hassaraud, author of 101 Champagne Cocktails published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt believes that sparkling cocktails are versatile, in terms of taste and when you can enjoy them. “You have a little more variety with pairing when you make Champagne cocktails vs. just Champagne. “By adding a little bit of bitters like Aperol or Campari, you’ve made a perfect starter for a meal. You can also mix with juices that might also be present in the sauces or marinades in the dish and these pairings will play really well together,” she added. Hassaraud recommends that for cocktails with a lot of juice and fruit 58 STYLETOME.COM
purees, like a Mimosa or Bellini, use something with a lot of bubbles and on the reasonable side in terms of price point, like a Prosecco or cava. Khorosh agrees with Hassaraud in terms of pairings. “Any spicy seafood dish pairs better with a Champagne cocktail versus just Champagne. The sweetness and acidity of a Champagne cocktail balances out spicy foods much better than Champagne on its own.” Want to end the meal in sparkling style, Hassaraud recommends “Death in the Afternoon” made with sparkling wine and Absinthe. “It’s just like an after dinner mint,” she says. Entertaining at home? No reason not to consider a DIY Sparkling Cocktail Bar. Hassaraud recommends that the bubbly be

handy but be sure to store it in a large, ice-filled bucket or ice chest so that the temperature is cold – at all times. “I would keep it pretty simple, have a selection of juices and juice blends. Also consider fresh lemonades - they mix so well with Champagne, Prosecco and cava, and don’t forget the bitters.” No matter what the cocktail occasion Khorosh reminds us that “less is more.” I prefer the quality of the sparkling wine speak for itself and use the mixers to add a hint of flavor. BUBBLY STARTERS FOR YOUR SPARKLING COCKTAILS Champagne Champagne is a sparkling wine produced from grapes grown in the Champagne region of France following rules that demand secondary fermentation of the wine in the bottle to create carbonation. Some use the term Champagne as a generic term for sparkling wine, but the majority of countries
reserve the term exclusively for sparkling wines that come from Champagne and are produced under the rules of the appellation. Prosecco Prosecco is an Italian sparkling white wine, generally a dry or extra dry wine. It is normally
Although the name is derived from that of the Italian village of Prosecco near Trieste, where the grape may have originated, DOC Prosecco is produced in the regions of Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, traditionally mainly around Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, in the hills north of Treviso. Cava
“ENTERTAINING AT HOME? NO REASON NOT TO CONSIDER A DIY SPARKLING COCKTAIL BAR” made from Glera (the grape formerly known, itself, as “Prosecco”) though other varieties, such as Bianchetta Trevigiana, are permitted to be included in the blend.
Cava is a sparkling wine of Denominación de Origen (DO) status, most of which is produced in Catalonia. It may be white (blanco) or rosé (rosado). The macabeu, parellada and xarel·lo are the most popular and traditional grape varieties for producing cava. Only wines produced in the champenoise traditional method may be labelled cavas, those produced by other processes may only be called “sparkling wines” (vinos espumosos). About 95% of all cava is produced in the Penedès area in Catalonia, with the village of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia being home to many of Spain’s largest production houses.

Old Florida
Charm OF ANNA MARIA ISLAND
By Cathleen K. Bode
Tucked away in the turquoise waters of Florida’s West Coast lies Anna Maria Island, a quaint vacation spot that could easily be called one of the state’s best-kept secrets. About two and a half hours from Orlando and a little over an hour from Tampa, this barrier island is an effortless travel destination for those looking for an escape with family and friends. Anna Maria Island is truly a timeless treasure, keeping the Old Florida charm alive with a small town community atmosphere and traditional and rustic architecture. Although the Island has come a long way from its first public use in 1898, the beaches still retain the natural splendor of Florida’s Gulf Coast. Anna Maria Beach, a popular destination since the 1970s, is one of the coziest paradises in Florida. It is one of the few beaches that have successfully withstood major commercial development and has allowed the Florida of the past to return to life with old-fashioned fishing piers, arts and craft shops, and natural wildlife. While gaining the attention of visitors for years, Anna Maria Island has also achieved many accolades for its pristine beaches. Six of Anna Maria’s beaches have been awarded the “Blue Wave Certification” from the Clean Beaches Coalition, and the island has earned third place in TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards for Top Ten Islands in the United States. This winter is your chance to discover the beauty behind Anna Maria’s continuous praises. The quiet turquoise waves and white sand beaches create a peaceful setting for a relaxing retreat, and with seven miles of beach access on both the Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota Bay, there are endless opportunities to find your place in the sun. There’s nothing better than a room with a beachfront view, and Anna Maria’s Mainsail Beach Inn has some of the best on the island. Overlooking the beauty of the stunning waters of the coast, this inn creates the perfect locale for a weekend trip with friends or even an extended stay with family. The Mainsail Beach Inn celebrates Florida’s natural ambiance with coastal architecture and island-inspired designs. This resort offers 12 luxurious vacation rentals with direct beach access. The three-bedroom/ two-bath condos are just the right size to appreciate the beauty of the Anna Maria beaches in comfort and style. There are countless ways to enjoy all that Anna Maria Island has to offer, from adventures on the beach to oceanfront dining, but strolling through the streets of the island is quite an adventure all its own. On the north end of Anna Maria Island sits the charming Pine Avenue, a street is fit for a lovely afternoon of boutique shopping, where you can find anything from beach-inspired jewelry to delicious gourmet treats. Currently undergoing significant development, Pine Avenue has

become one of Florida’s most sustainable residential areas, and its ability to generate even more energy than its buildings will use each year has given it the title of “Greenest Little Main Street in America.” With an eclectic blend of old-fashioned architecture and modern features, Pine Avenue is a perfect outing after hours spent soaking up the sun. In order to preserve the legacy of Anna Maria Island, the city began the Pine Avenue Restoration project, which provides visitors and locals alike with a historic shopping district combining vacation-style living and pedestrian friendly small town atmosphere, including boutique shops and residential buildings. Much of the renovation is already finished and expected to be fully completed within 20 years. Anna Maria Island has been known to have some of the most beautiful sunsets, and a tranquil evening sail is perhaps the best way to experience this glorious sight. 40% Southern, 60% Contemporary By Maria Delis
Slow-Roasted Barbeque-Glazed Pork Belly Biscuits, Crab-Stuffed Deviled Duck Eggs, Cornmeal Crisped Oysters with Chicharrones … It is Southern cuisine with a twist. And each dish is delish! “Soco stands for southern contemporary. It’s a new and adventurous culinary approach to dishes that we have all come to know and love,” says executive chef/partner Greg Richie. Located in historic Thornton Park, a Downtown Orlando neighborhood popular among locals not only for its restaurants and cafes, but also for its monthly Wine & Art walk, Soco offers southern hospitality in an urban, yet cozy, space. Chef Richie hails from the South and brings a fusion of flavors to each one of his culinary creations. First gaining experience at renowned Southern restaurants, Richie then
ventured west, where he worked with Roy Yamaguchi at the original Roy’s restaurant in Hawaii. This led to an executive chef/partner position at Roy’s in Orlando. He also helmed the kitchen at Emeril’s Tchoup Chop at the Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando. The award-winning chef has been regularly named to Restaurant Forum’s list of the Top 20 Chefs in Central Florida and is a charter member of Sunshine Plate, boosting the region’s culinary reputation. His Southern background and professional culinary experience inspired Richie’s new restaurant in Thornton Park. The corner of Summerlin and Central Avenue, once occupied by Hue Restaurant, now has a large, wood-toned patio with a wrap-around fence, inviting visitors to “c’mon in” and experience the Soco fare. Our favorites were the Slow-Roasted Barbeque-Glazed Pork Belly Biscuits with jalapeño jelly and chow-chow, and the SocoStyle “Chicken and Dumplings” stuffed with lobster and edamame, topped with carved chicken, local mushrooms, and soy butter. “We’re now open for Sunday Brunch, starting at 11 a.m.” Felicia Vestel, our server from North Carolina, reminded us. “Where else can you find fried quail and pecan waffles,” Vestel exclaimed. But if fried quail is not your dish of choice, you can savor something light like the house-made granola
and yogurt with local honey and fresh fruit. The brunch menu has something for every palate and diet. Our Soco evening ended on a sweet, chocolaty note: A slice of “Moon Pie” pie. Richie’s version of the good ol’ “Moon Pie with an RC Cola” snack (it’s a Southern thing) consists of rich chocolate ganache and a thick marshmallow whipped topping. Devilishly good. “I place a strong emphasis on the integrity of the ingredients I use,” Richie says, “what I call ‘thoughtfully sourced,’ whether they’re from accountable local growers or purveyors dedicated to sustainable fishing.” And this distinguishes Soco and makes it a great addition to not only Thornton Park, but also to the greater Orlando area, because restaurants like Soco are helping Orlando transform into a culinary destination.

Taverna Opa
is Orlando’s premier Mediterranean restaurant with a focus on traditional Greek cuisine. Located in Pointe Orlando on the ever-growing International Drive, it should come as no surprise to see Opa Orlando filled every night with guests who desire a new, refreshing take on a luxurious dining experience. At the family-owned restaurant, guests get the rare opportunity to enjoy homemade dishes that feature and promote ingredients indigenous to Greece without ever having to leave the heart of our gorgeous city. Celebrated for its live entertainment and monthly dinner parties, when you make the decision to dine at Opa Orlando, you are making a decision to embark on a Greek journey. Imported items such as cheeses, olives and extra virgin olive oils are used in numerous dishes, while signatures like Tzatziki, Hummus, Greek Yogurt and Dolmades are made fresh from scratch daily. The restaurant is operated by husbandand-wife duo Vassilis and Katerina Coumbaros and the kitchen is run by Katerina’s mother, Sofia Karachalias, who visits Greece throughout the year for inspiration and new ideas for even more authentic cuisine. To extend the education on the origin of the food and wines, owner Katerina has introduced Journey & Savor, a monthly menu and wine pairing dinner. The dinner is designed to give guests a deeper look into Greek cuisine ranging from street food to dishes native to the island of Crete. The interactive dinner is set for 20 guests and takes you through each course to learn the history, pairing choice and ingredient portfolio. Our five-course meal started with Kokini Piperia Soupa “Chilled Roasted Red Pepper Soup” served in an elegant wine glass with a yogurt coating on the rim. Paired with Alpha Estate White, a 100% white Sauvignon blanc, this first course was my companion’s favorite from the night while mine came a little later on. Our second course consisted of crunchy, yet delicate zucchini blossoms stuffed

with the finest cheeses and paired with a lovely Alpha Estate Axia Red, a 50/50 blend of Xinomavro and Syra. Next on the culinary adventure was my personal favorite dish, the Oktapodi. Octopus and pasta were cooked and seasoned to perfection in this course, which was paired with a fruity Xinomarvo red wine. The fourth course was a twist on the classic ribeye. The Rolo Brizola was cooked and served with feta, sun dried tomatoes, spinach, Kalamata olives and chili infused olive oil. The bursting flavors paired with Skouras Winery “Megas Oenos” were simply heavenly. The evening meal was brought to a perfect conclusion with Fraoula, a surprisingly refreshing strawberry based dessert paired with Vinsanto Santorini from Sigalas Winery. To say Opa Orlando offers an extensive wine menu is clearly an understatement. In my five-course dinner I barely scratched the surface of their collection which features more than 20 imported varietals in addition to a full collection of spirits. Make your reservation for lunch or dinner at Opa Orlando by calling today or simply walkin the next time you find yourself in Orlando with a craving for authentic Mediterranean cuisine and lively entertainment. You’ll laugh as napkins rain down around you, dance alongside belly dancers and get lost in a live DJ’s beats as Opa Orlando is transformed from an upscale dining venue to a thrilling Greek party right before your very eyes. It’s guaranteed to be an experience that you won’t soon forget. Taverna Opa Orlando opaorlando.com 9101 International Drive #2240 Orlando, FL 32819 Reservation #: 407-351-8660

BARFLY
IS IT ME OR THE
Ladies, we’ve all been guilty of
it before. Flirting with the nice guy we have no intention of dating in the hopes of scoring some free booze. For us it’s a win win situation -- for the guys not so much. So fellows how do you tell if a girl is interested in you or your open bar? Orlando Style readers have come up with the best tips to tell:
BOOZE? By Michelle Senter 72
ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
“WHAT SHE DOESN’T REALIZE IS THAT I ORDERED JOSE AND SAID IT WAS PATRON. JOKES ON YOU.” THE FADE AWAY Sometimes this move is perfectly acceptable if a guy is being overly obnoxious but there are times when a girl just isn’t feeling the vibe you’re giving out. It could be any number of reasons but here’s one way to tell if she’s attempting to snag a drink and run for the hills. “If she walks away right after you hand her a drink and uses the excuse she has to find her friends, she’s not interested. Or if she tries to get you to buy drinks for her friends too she’s definitely just using you.” – Jeffrey Moreir 26
THE OVER ACHIEVER As girls, we appreciate it when guys like to spend that extra cash in order to get us a drink that doesn’t give us a mind splitting headache the next morning. As guys, it’s frustrating when you do spend that extra money only to find out the girl was just using you. “When a girl is drinking with me all night and I feel like she’s interested in me, I like to spend money on her. But when she starts becoming more concerned with the quality and price of the drinks than any part of our conversations, I start to see where her real intentions lie. Eventually when you ask her what kind of shot she wants she goes straight for the top shelf, like patron, but what she doesn’t realize is that I ordered Jose and said it was patron. Jokes on you.” – Nick Van Nice 28
BACKGROUND NOISE Girls like to go out in groups for the obvious there’s safety in numbers reasoning. But when a girl is drinking with you and paying more attention to her friends then anything you have to say, that’s a sure sign she’s not genuinely interested. “If she’s being quiet, acting shy, or talking to her friends more than she’s talking to me, I can tell she’s drinking with me just for free drinks. Usually when a girl actually seem genuinely interested they’re very talkative and touchy and give all of their attention to me instead of other people around us.” – Kyle Martin 24 So gentlemen try and look for these dead giveaways to avoid giving away your wallet. And ladies let’s try and be a bit more honest with our intentions. Being coy or playing hard to get is one thing but snagging that booze and running off like a bandit is another.

THE KINGS OF ENGLAND Behind every good king is a great group of successful individuals. At Bank of England, Andrew truly believes he has put together a great team and a process engineered for speed and accuracy. He started in the mortgage business in 2002 and moved to Orlando 2004. In June of 2009, he became a member of Bank of England, and his team has consistently ranked in the top three nationally ever since. The average banker in his office has worked for him over five years and his office staff has been able to develop the knowledge base they needed to excel in every aspect related to home loan financing. Over the last two years, they have fine tuned the purchase process and have become the home of the 21 days close. Bank of England has become a direct Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Ginnie Mae direct seller servicer. This allows them the ability to bypass the big banks and their arduous overlays, and instead go directly to the source of underwriting. As many of you know, the big banks will add additional underwriting requirements to the approval process (Overlays) which only further complicate underwriting by requiring extra conditions or actually refusing to give buyers loans, who indeed do actually qualify based on standard seller servicer guidelines. The 21 day close is accomplished by seasoned and knowledgeable mortgage bankers taking applications and asking the appropriate questions regarding the borrower’s credit, income and asset information. Once they have reviewed the necessary documentation, they will run the application through the appropriate automated underwriting engine and get the loan initially approved. Once we review the automated approval, the buyer is issued the approval letter and thus starts the home shopping process. Once the buyer finds the right home and we receive the executed contract, the process moves into overdrive. Bank of England has a private panel of appraisers with extensive knowledge of the Central Florida market and its surrounding neighborhoods. This is another major advantage for Bank of England, as we only use local appraisers with knowledge of the local market compared to the bigger banks who use a nationwide appraisal management company. We usually get the appraisal back within 7 calendar days, which allows us to keep the process moving forward as quickly as possible.

In the final phase of the transaction, our world class underwriting and closing departments complete the transaction and fund the loan within minutes of closing, where our competition usually takes hours to complete. From his people to the process, Andrew and Bank of England have built a system to astonish, making the process of buying a home quick and easy.

Travis entered the mortgage business in 2003 as a loan officer, and he has closed in excess of 1,000 mortgage transactions. He has worked for the big banks, the direct lenders and as an independent mortgage broker, but he calls Bank of England his home. Bank of England has been around for over 100 years, originating in England, Arkansas in 1898. They started as an agricultural bank, lending to farmers and have grown into a mortgage powerhouse, funding over 2 billion a year. With the help of Bank of England, Travis is able to issue a rock solid preapproval for clients looking to purchase. This is very important in the purchase world due to the large amount of watered down pre-approvals that are being issued by his competitors. Realtors are nervous with every pre-approval they see, wondering if it will close or if it will close on time. With Bank of England’s process, they close and fund loans within 21 calendar days. This gives Travis more time to develop relationships and help more families buy homes. Here is what some of his partners are saying: “A pre- Approval from him is the same as a closed loan” Bobby Baldor REMAX Properties SW “I appreciate all the hard work Travis’s has done on my past six files. As a real estate broker, it is refreshing to finally deal with a mortgage banker and bank who actually answers their phone promptly and returns emails efficiently. Their rates have been extremely competitive. I will be referring him to all my agents.” Mark Gerber Realtor –SRA Park View Realty “My first transaction with Travis happened when one of his pre-approved clients contacted me, asking to see some houses. I had not heard of Travis or the Bank of England at that time and was slightly skeptical. The entire process was smooth from start to finish and I was informed the whole time. The clients I have referred to him since then have all closed with ease and spoke very highly of him. When we have a file together now I can rest easy knowing Travis has the process under control.” Jessie Zuluaga Realtor- Charles Rutenberg Realty Travis has a huge family with a few dozen cousins in central Florida alone. EDGAR D. LOZADA JR. EQUITY PRIME MORTGAGE
Edgar D. Lozada Jr. bought his first home at the age of 19 and had acquired 14 properties by the age of 23. Since then, he says he has “loved every minute of his journey in the residential mortgage business.” Today, he’s a mortgage banker and top producer with Equity Prime Mortgage, an Atlanta-based company with a large presence in Central Florida. Equity Prime mortgage is a direct Fannie Mae seller/servicer that offers just about every loan product available on the market, giving clients the most options from which to choose. The company specializes in early or on-time loan closings every time and excellent communication with all parties throughout the process. Every company practice stems from a belief in “make-sense” lending, Edgar says. “Our ability to close common sense loans and make exceptions when necessary is just another thing we do that sets us apart from the competition,” he says. And in 2013, the company was included on the Inc. 5000 list of America’s fastest growing companies, ranking No. 43 in the financial services category. With more than 12 years of experience in the industry in Central Florida, Edgar has had his own successes since joining the company’s Orlando office in 2011. For three consecutive years, he has received the loan officer of the year award for loan volume — at $15 million in 2013 alone and a projected $20 million for 2014. “I always make myself available to my clients and referral partners, and I thoroughly explain and set proper expectations on every transaction,” Edgar says. “This creates a great overall experience for the client, every time. It’s not just about the figures making good sense; it’s about complete client satisfaction throughout the process.” Edgar began working as a loan officer in 2002 because of his love for financing and numbers. But his choice to work in the residential mortgage industry began with his passion for buying and managing real estate. He understood early the value of obtaining properties at a low price and the potential income that could be gained from each one. “I always knew if you were going to put your money somewhere, investing in a home was the best way to do it,” he said. And he has put that belief into practice himself. That knowledge and his own experiences grew into a desire to help people make their dreams of home ownership a reality. “I work with a full range of borrowers, but I especially enjoy working with first-time homebuyers,” Edgar said. “Purchasing a home is very exciting, but it can also be stressful so I strive to make sure my clients are comfortable with their new home purchase and fully understand the entire process. My goal is to help them get the results they want and have the best experience doing it.”

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW Special Promotional Feature
GOVERNMENT SEIZURES OF BANK ACCOUNTS AND CASH – AN ABUSE OF POWER - BY MARK L. HORWITZ
In 1928, Supreme Court Justice Brandeis wrote “Experience should teach us to be most on our guard to protect liberty when the government’s purposes are beneficent. Men born to freedom are naturally alert to repel invasion of their liberty by evil-minded rulers. The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding.” On October 28, 2014, the New York Times ran an article about the IRS abusing civil forfeiture laws by seizing bank accounts on mere suspicion. The owners were often not charged with a crime, but must prove themselves innocent to get their money back.
Law Offices of Mark L. Horwitz, P.A. 17 East Pine Street Orlando, FL 32801 P: 407-843-7733 F: 407-849-1321 mark@mlhorwitzlaw.com www.mlhorwitzlaw.com
The taking of money is not limited to bank accounts. People traveling in the U.S. by air with large amounts of cash have been subject to seizures on mere suspicion. What shows up in a TSA x-ray can wind up being seized by law enforcement. Seizures on mere suspicion also occur during routine car stops when police find large amounts of cash. The victims of seizures, though not charged with a crime, must prove that the cash or account is
not from illegal activity or to be used to commit a crime. Imagine that your bank account is seized and that you must prove you are innocent and deserve the return of the money. Many people cannot afford an attorney to help them, especially after the government seizure. Another complaint about seizures without an arrest is that law enforcement uses the money to supplement their budgets. Many have complained that this gives an improper motive to some seizures on mere suspicion. The use of civil forfeiture to deprive law abiding citizens of their bank accounts, cash and other assets, on mere suspicion is an example of the great danger to liberty recognized by Justice Brandeis and stems from well-meaning legislation that is subject to abuse.

MOBILE PAYMENT SYSTEM AND CUT UP THOSE CARDS FOR GOOD,
BECAUSE PLASTIC IS SO 2014...”
GET READY TO HOLIDAY SHOP… AND LEAVE THE CREDIT CARDS BEHIND! By Mark NeJame Contributor Vanessa Braeley, Associate Attorney with NeJame Law
Here are the basics: Apple Pay was released to the public through an update to iOS 8.1 on October 20. Apple Pay is designed to allow iPhone 6 users to pay for goods and services with their iPhones using an NFC chip built into the iPhone 6, 6 Plus and Apple Watch (Apple Watch will be released in early 2015). The retailer must have an NFC compatible pay station, or terminal. The user’s credit cards are securely added to the Passbook application. Once the card is added, Apple Pay is ready for use. One simple touch of the home button, held over the NFC terminal, and the transaction is complete.
The holidays are officially in full swing.
The malls may be packed, but this year shoppers are keeping their credit cards in their wallets – thanks to a little app known as Apple Pay. Yes, the technology powerhouse has done it again, and the app is getting some serious traction. So let’s get down to brass tacks: What exactly is it? Is your information secure? How does it work?
90 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
Of course there are some nervous nellies out there, and understandably so. In the wake of the SnapChat photo storage debacle, can we ever really trust our personal information is safe? Apparently so. Apple Pay is claimed to be the most secure payment scheme on the planet by credit card executives. When a credit or debit card is scanned for use with Apple Pay, it is assigned a unique Device Account Number, or “token,” which is stored in the phone rather than an actual card number. Credit card numbers and data are never uploaded to iCloud or Apple’s servers. When a transaction is made, the Device Account Number is sent via NFC, along with a one-time security code unique to each transaction, both of which are used to verify a successful payment.
The new payment framework is called “tokenization” and it is believed to be the new gold standard in secure payment transactions. Retail hacking incidents resulting from stolen user data will be prevented, as retailers will never encounter actual credit or debit card numbers. For us attorneys, a sincere reduction of fraud claims is on the horizon. Apple Pay does have a competitor, CurrentC, a mobile payment system backed by MCX, or Merchant Customer Exchange. CurrentC provides technology to older phones and does not charge a fee for use (Apple Pay charges a nominal fee), but the buck stops there. Before MCX officially released CurrentC, a security breach was reported and customers’ email addresses were hacked. What’s more is MCX has required merchants to sign exclusivity agreement, preventing them from using Apple Pay. As a result, retailers such as CVS and Rite Aid have disabled NFC technologies in their stores, which has, of course, launched a class action lawsuit investigation focused on antitrust regulation violations. The overwhelming majority of consumers seem to disfavor CurrentC as it does not encrypt user information, is clunky to use, and tracks and stores user health data, a potential serious privacy violation. Understanding the way these technologies work is truly the key to properly selecting which mobile payment method you prefer. The news on this technology is mounting as fast as Apple’s stock prices, so tune in. Tis’ the season to download the latest mobile payment system and cut up those cards for good, because plastic is so 2014…

MAKE IT A HABIT! GETTING THAT NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION TO STICK ALL YEAR LONG By Christina Nicholson
With the holidays of 2014 drawing to a close, and
The University of Scranton, Journal of Clinical Psychology states that the number one New Year’s Resolution from 2014 was to “lose weight.” A few of these other classics may sound familiar to you: “quit smoking,” “get fit,” “drink less alcohol,” “eat more fruits and vegetables..” All of the above are the most common resolutions year after year; however,
the promises of 2015 taking hold, it is time to ring in the New Year and think of ways to improve on the previous! Of course, this means it’s time for the New Year’s Resolutions to begin. If we’re honest with ourselves, how long do we plan on keeping our resolutions? Let’s take a closer look:
94 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
HEALTH & BEAUTY
after making these New Year’s vows, there are only 8% of dedicated Americans who actually accomplish their resolutions! The problem is that we need to develop the mindset and beneficial habits to accomplish our goals, without viewing our once hopeful resolution as a chore or tedious task. The 21 day habit is the answer we have been searching for to better these statistics and see our commitments through to 2016.
habit is easier, and even more beneficial to us short-term. It’s time to make a change and better the statistic of only 8% of Americans accomplishing their
one resolution will increase your chances of a successful resolution and cause it to be more focused; plan your resolution in advance. Do not repeat last year’s resolution because chances are it failed. If repeating is necessary, try another angle using different techniques. Write down your goals and accomplishments and remember to reward yourself for your hard work! Think of these helpful tips throughout your 21 day new habit developments.
“CHOOSING ONE RESOLUTION WILL INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF A SUCCESSFUL RESOLUTION AND CAUSE IT TO BE MORE FOCUSED”
Try making 2015 the year of promises fulfilled and embrace the philosophy of the 21 day habit. The trick? The conscious brain is being told to sample a habit for 21 days, and after those days have passed the neural pathways have already formed in order to continue the habit without struggle or question, thus becoming a natural part of our everyday lifestyle. When we set unrealistic goals, the conscious mind may be overwhelmed and we begin to immediately search for reasons of why our current bad
resolutions. Let’s focus on the most common resolution: to lead a healthier life. Begin by deciding what your specific health goal will be for the upcoming year. Richard Wiseman, a professor of psychology at Hertfordshire University suggested the following. Choosing
In order to accomplish any health resolution, begin by developing the necessary and beneficial habits of proper sleep each night, drinking plenty of water each day, and eliminating processed foods. Once accomplishing 21 days of healthy eating, move on to 30 minutes of daily physical activity for the next set of 21 days. Once you adjust to the new healthy lifestyle and it becomes second nature, adding another 21 day set will be both rewarding and beneficial to the healthier you!

It’s early morning and you’ve just woken up for work. You get up, set the coffee machine (assuming it’s not automatically set), shower, get dressed, grab your first cup of coffee and head out for a long, productive day on the job. As lunch time approaches, you’re on your second cup of coffee, or maybe that’s passed and now you’ve opted for a coca-cola. But
your sugar and caffeine rush are short lived, plus you’re starting to lack concentration, so you go for your third cup. What’s another cup to help you finish the day strong, right? Sure, that’s fine. But you need at least 2 more cups because the due date for that important presentation your team has been working on is tomorrow, and you know you’ll be up all night adding the final touches, making sure everything is good to go.
THIS SOUNDS LIKE YOU MIGHT HAVE A SERIOUS ADDICTION.
ADDICTION?

Having 5 or more cups of coffee a day is extremely unhealthy and you may need some guidance on how to slow down, before things get crazy and this addiction gets out of control. Addiction? Yes, addiction. As in a junkie, fiend, or fanatic fixated on all things caffeine. If you find yourself experiencing headaches, dizziness, trembling, insomnia, and/or difficulty concentrating without caffeine, you’re becoming too dependent on it. But don’t worry, there’s ways to reduce this dependency and bring you back to the healthy, independent, naturally energetic person that we know you are. Listen, it’s okay, everybody has an addiction, yours happens to be caffeine. We understand life gets a little hectic and your day starts dragging so you need it to keep you upbeat and alert, don’t feel bad. You can count on us to be with you every step of the way to your recovery. Just know it’s highly advised that you do not to quit “cold turkey” because of the withdrawal symptoms that follows. Instead, try juicing for natural energy. But if you’re not into that lower your intake of caffeine on a daily basis by mixing decaffeinated coffee, with caffeinated, or add more milk than coffee to your morning brew. And if you’ve tried those things and you just can’t seem to kick the habit, there are online and in person institutions that can help.

WILL YOU SNORE
THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS INTO THE NEW YEAR? Snoring is
the vibration of respiratory structures and the resulting sound due to obstructive air movement
during breathing while sleeping. Snoring can be a symptom of Obstructive Sleep Apnea but not everyone who snores has the sleep disorder. Here is a testimonial from a patient I treated with an oral sleep appliance: I am a Board Certified Physician. My schedule is extremely demanding and has me working all hours of the day and night. As a result, my sleep is not regular, nor would I consider it in line with good, healthy sleep. As a result, I snore quite loudly so much that it affects my sleep and those around me. The SomnoMed Oral Sleep Appliance was suggested to me by Dr. Carl Bilancione, Cosmetic and Comprehensive Dentistry. I put it in when I lie down; it protrudes my jaw slightly, thus causing a more anatomically open airway. It is not uncomfortable to wear and built to the alignment of my mouth. The process to make the molds takes about 30 minutes-no more time than a regular dental appointment. There is absolutely no work involved. The process is extremely comfortable. What I have noticed is a more restful sleep. I wake up refreshed no matter what my schedule. Further, my family is less affected by my snoring-which, is all but gone. This device allows the patient’s airway to remain anatomically open while you sleep. It can decrease snoring as well as assist those with the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea. While it is not a cure, those with limited symptoms can greatly improve their lives. I encourage you to see if the SomnoMed Oral Sleep Appliance is appropriate for you.
In closing as a general dentist it is imperative that I work with a team of experts and these professionals are part of my team.

TRAVEL TROUBLE: SERIOUS, AVOIDABLE CANINE INFLUENZA AND KENNEL COUGH:
10-Point Pet Care Checklist Promotes Peace-of-Mind By Paul Mann
With all of
the necessary catch up after your travels, a sick dog is the last thing you want to contend with. An ailing animal can also cut your longplanned, expensive vacation short should you need to come home early to nurse them back to good health. And, of course, you don’t want your four-legged best friend to feel ill and achy—or suffer, and possibly lose, a battle with a life-threatening condition. In kind, pet owners must carefully consider their pet care options when they travel to best ensure Fido won’t contract highly contagious and potentially deadly diseases, with canine influenza and kennel cough paramount among them. With over 62 percent of U.S. households owning one or more pets and reports surfacing regularly of dogs contracting canine influenza—an easily transmitted and often lethal airborne virus—the concern is not to be taken lightly. For its part, kennel cough is the most prevalent infectious disease among dogs
and it, too, can result in fatal complications. Canine influenza and kennel cough often occur in kennel, boarding and daycare facilities because one dog “plants” the disease and then multiple dogs have a high chance of coming in contact, contracting and further spreading the disease during the time they are kenneled— while they themselves suffer through the nasty symptoms. Panic surfaced this past August when a dog reportedly contracted canine influenza at a doggy daycare facility in New York, putting other dog owners throughout the city on high alert. It’s hard enough for owners to deal with the psychological concerns relating to boarding their pets in crowded facilities, but the physical health risks put a dog in double jeopardy. The good news is that precautions can be taken to keep dogs happy and well while their owners 104 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
are away for a short or extended period of time. There are, in fact, far safer and healthier alternatives to kennel, boarding and daycare facilities, which can also help give pet owners greater peace of mind when away from their four-legged friends. Professional in-home pet sitting is one sound alternative to thwart pet illness, since most reputable pet care services typically visit with dogs in their own home and walk them one at a time or in very small groups. Another alternative is private boarding, whereby the dog enjoys “free range” comfort in the safety and comfort of a pet sitter’s home. The better pet care services will also employ a large number of pet sitters to assure each staff member interacts with no more than 5 to 10 dogs in a day’s time—even during busy holidays. This exposure is far less than the 50 to 150 dogs that might typically board together in a
BEST FRIENDS
kennel, boarding or daycare facility over a busy holiday season. Thus, the disease risk level for in-home pet sitting is considerably lower. Considering the overall savings in avoiding expensive veterinarian bills, and assuring both the physical and psychological health of pets, in-home pet sitting and private boarding are a much safer and cost-effective alternative to facility-based pet care all around. To help pet owners avoid putting their beloved pets in dangerous health situations by using a professional pet sitter and dog walker, below are my “Top 10 Tips Assuring Pet Sitting Satisfaction”: 1. Locate a pet sitter in your area using a reputable source; 2. Diligently check all of the pet sitter’s references–at least three should be voluntarily provided—and ensure you can find positive online reviews; 3. Confirm that your sitter has undergone a criminal background check and has received proper training; 4. Ensure the sitter offers a free in-home consultation and pre-interview the sitter with
your pet(s) present to observe interactions and establish a “comfort level” between you, the sitter and your pet(s); 5. Clearly state how you would like the sitter to use his/her visit time in terms of walking, playing, exercising, feeding, cleaning, etc.; 6. Verify that the sitter can accommodate your pet’s daily feeding, walking and exercise schedule, as well as your desired vacation schedule, even during the busiest holidays; 7. Ensure the company offers 7-day-per-week telephone and email availability; 8. Provide medical and behavioral history about your pet(s) as well as veterinary and other emergency contact information, and gather all necessary supplies, including food, vitamins, and treats in one central location; 9. Ensure the company has “backup” measures in place should your primary pet sitter have an emergency that prevents them from performing your assignment;
insured and offers a satisfaction guarantee. The traveling public must not panic about reported cases of canine influenza or kennel cough outbreaks, but should diligently educate themselves regarding safe options for pet care. If in-home pet care is desired, it’s also imperative to ensure the pet sitting professional is reputable and reliable. If a pet owner takes just a few relatively simple criteria into account before entrusting Fido to a pet sitter, they can enjoy peace of mind that their dog—and their home—will be well cared for. Pet Care—the nation’s largest and most trusted franchisor for professional pet sitting, dog walking, and pet fitness/exercise services—serving thousands of pets and pet parents throughout the United States from coast to coast. TIPS FOR CHOOSING A D O G - F R I E N D LY H O T E L R O O M By Sandra Ketcham
Planning a trip with your four-legged friend this holiday season? If so, you’re not alone; one in five pet owners bring their dog along when traveling. If you can’t bear to leave your best friend with strangers or think spending time with Fido constitutes an ideal vacation, do your homework before leaving home. Whether you plan to hit the road or the skies this season, you’ll both need a place to sleep when you reach your destination. Fortunately, more and more hotels—from budget to luxury—are rolling out the red carpet for furry traveling companions. In fact, the American Hotel and Motel Association estimates that there are currently more than 20,000 pet-friendly hotels and motels in the country. But how do you choose the right one? In most cases, it’s immediately obvious which hotels are petfriendly and which are simply pet-tolerant. Any hotel worth your business should treat you and your pet like royalty. Look for luxurious five-star pet amenities, such as treats at check in, gourmet food, cozy pet beds, and complimentary leashes. Avoid lodgings that charge an exorbitant pet fee or deposit.
How to Choose a Pet-Friendly Hotel Room 1. Do your research. Before booking a room, hit the internet and read guest reviews. Search the hotel’s website for their pet policy, then call to find out if the hotel has any rules regarding the number, weight, species, or breed of animals allowed. 2. Calculate pet fees and deposits when comparing room rates. You’re not getting a good rate if the hotel charges high pet fees. 3. Let the hotel know at booking that you’re bringing a dog, and ask detailed questions about policies and restrictions. Some hotels limit animals to certain floors, for example, and this may mean giving up that view you wanted. 4. Find out what pet necessities the hotel 106 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
supplies and what you’ll need to bring from home. Does the hotel offer dog food, squeaky toys, a sleeping crate, and food and water bowls? No matter what the hotel provides, pack your dog’s special toys and blankets; familiar items reduce stress. 5. Ask about the hotel’s optional services, such as dog walking, pet massage, grooming services, and pet sitting. These creature comforts often cost extra, but most dogs enjoy the pampering. 6. Make sure the hotel offers outdoor space, especially if indoor space is limited. A nearby dog park may also work. A cooped up dog won’t be happy, and he’ll make sure you’re not happy either.
