Will this Valentine’s Day be
ON OFF or
for Jelena & Robsten? By Alyssa Thomann Read more at: StyleToMe.com
> Valentine’s day: the most bittersweet holiday of the year. On one hand, for all the couples out there,Valentine’s Day is full of romance and endearing love.Yet, on the other hand, for all the single ladies,Valentine’s day is full of solo dinners, denial and several vocalized justifications as to why February 14 is the most pointless holiday of the year- because who needs a boyfriend, right? Let’s face it though; there is always a little part of your single self that would love the romantic dinner, box of chocolates or bouquet of roses no matter how much you deny it. Hence, the reason you find yourself out with your best friends or buddying up to your most recent ex for the night just so you don’t spend the 14th on your couch with a carton of ice-cream and the latest rom-com pulled up on Netflix. I suppose it is for this very reason and (I sure hope) the sake of love that we find some of Hollywood’s hottest on and off couples gearing more toward the “on” position during the month of February. Hollywood’s ‘young’ hottest couple, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, are no strangers to the word “break up.” After first falling for and courting Selena at age 18, Justin, age 17 at the time, won her heart and the two have been an item for the past two years now. As most couples do, they have had their share of fights and minor breakups. But recently, during this past December, tensions were exponentially high and the two were rumored to have split indefinitely. Supposedly, Justin Bieber befriended Selena’s long time ex, Nick Jonas, which infuriated Selena. In addition to this drama, Justin has recently been spotted in photos with Victoria Secret model, Barbara Palvin. Although, they both have admitted that nothing is going on between them, and that they are just friends. However, Selena has been reported saying she was having “trust issues” with the Biebs and felt their busy schedules were too much of a burden on the relationship. Let’s not forget about Justin and Barbara taking a trip to see The Lion King on Broadway. That was certainly no help in mending the “trust issue.”

In good news, times are looking up for the two and it does seem that the New Year has helped to ring in a new start to their relationship. The two were recently caught boarding a flight to Mexico for a New Years vacation together looking happy as ever. Their problems have been resolved, I presume, and just in time for the most romantic holiday of the year. It’s nice to know the young couple is happy once again. In addition to Jelena,Twilight stars, Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson are also up there on Hollywood’s hottest couples list. After being cast for one of the decades most popular bookturned-movie series as the lead couple madly in love, it turns out they were not just acting. They brought their passionate love from the screen to reality and found themselves topping far more headlines than they imagined. After being together for what has been nearly four years, it would seem that their love life was on a positive track. Pattinson, 26, has been reported saying that Stewart, 22, “has always done something to me that others haven’t.” Their happiness with one another was something to envy. Who knew these two would have any problems? They seemed perfect on and off stage.Turns out they are just another on and off couple working through tough times to make things work. This past year, Kristen Stewart’s infidelity shook up the couple’s perfect relationship and left twi-hard fans in an outrage. Amidst the filming of Twilight’s Breaking Dawn Part 2, Kristen was also filming Snow White and the Huntsman as the lead role. Rumors began to spread that Kristen was more than just working with the director of the film, Rupert Sanders, but had started a proper scandal that was blowing up the headlines. During the filming of Stewart’s new movie, her and Sanders, 41 (and married) were caught cozying up together as well as dining together on numerous occasions while she was still with Pattinson. It was hard to believe at first, that there was trouble in paradise, but rumors were turned to fact when Kristen admitted it was all a mistake and a complete lapse of judgment. The couple’s relationship was highly compromised, but it turns out they are trying to make things work. Rob has planned to lay low from movie award parties in January to focus on his faulty relationship and try to build it back up to where it used to be. Valentine’s day plays a large part in the outcome of Robsten’s relationship. Rob has set February 14 as the day he must decide whether he is in this relationship for the long haul or not. It seems there may be a proposal in the cards so Kristen stay on your best behavior! <
“Let’s face it though; there is always a little part of your single self that would love the romantic dinner, box of chocolates or bouquet of roses no matter how much you deny it.”

> The carbon fiber composite body of the Evantra V8 is characterized by the new rear wing and the series of inserts realized in carbon fiber, or brushed aluminium. Inside a new chrome-molibden rollcage is positioned under the roof while another one connects the new engine to the rear suspension hard-points, this way enchancing the structural stiffness of the chassis and in the same time helps protecting the occupants. The Evantra’s “mechanical heart” is an aluminium V8, naturally aspirated 7.0 L. which is capable of developing 701 Hp @ 6600 rpm and 848 Nm @ 4500 rpm. The engine has a compression ratio of 11.0, a dry sump lubrification system, and valves, connecting rods in titanium. The performance of the Evantra V8 equipped with a 6-speed sequential gearbox
arrives up to the maximum velocity of over 350 Km/h with an acceleration of 0-100 in 3.2 seconds. The aerodynamic development process was realized in partnership with Ysim, a company with notable experience in F1 and Le mans. Sila holding industrial, leader company of gearshift systems, has developed a special version of its robotized gearshift system “silatronic” for Mazzanti. The power of the Evantra V8 is transferred onto the tarmac thanks to special high performance tyres from Continental 255/30 R20 front and 305/25 R20 rear, mounted on special 20” OZ alloy wheels. The braking system comes from Brembo, formed by 380mm discs with 6 piston calipers in the front and 360mm discs with 4 piston caliper is the back (carbon-ceramic system is optional). The engine starter button is placed onto the roof panel in “Mazzanti” style as in the “sister car” ANTAS. On the lower part of the console the modality selector is placed with different maps for the engine/gearbox, “Strada - Street” and “Corsa - Race”. “I am really proud to present the Evantra V8 .With her an enormous work is finished, that mainly focused on conciliating elements difficult to harmonize to each other: a personal concept that is absolutely out of todays market trends, a really precise and tipically italian stylistical identity and a powertrain with “absolute” performance are perfectly united in forms and function. Evantra V8 was not born to please everyone, instead to be herself and to generate emotions with her character and exclusivity.” - Luca Mazzanti

Titanic The Experience on International Drive
> Emeril Lagasse uncovers the authentic cuisine and unbeatable scenery that make the Sunshine State a hotspot for travelers and locals alike in his new series Emeril’s Florida, which premiered Sunday, January 6th. In the premiere episode, Emeril headed to Orlando making his first stop at The Ravenous Pig in Winter Park to whip up a delicious cobia dish with chef and owner James Petrakis. Then, he stopped in at his own restaurant, “Emeril’s Orlando,” for a surprise visit and headed to the kitchen, where he and the Culinary Director, Bernard Carmouche, prepared black grouper with sofrito, rock shrimp and avocado toast. After uncovering some of the freshest seafood in Orlando, Emeril explored the nightlife and entertainment that locals rave about including a stop at Vines Grille & Wine Bar, one of the best establishments for wine in the city. From there he visited Orlando Brewing to taste organic beers with owner, John Cheek. He then escaped the Florida heat at ICEBAR Orlando where the temperature inside is 20 degrees Fahrenheit – the coldest place in Florida to get a cocktail. No trip would be complete without dessert, so Emeril made his last stop at the Rosen Shin-

Lions and tigers and bears, on the streets of downtown Orlando…oh my! Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey’s Greatest Show on Earth rolled its way into Orlando at the Amway Center on January 7th with its allnew show called, Built to Amaze! The seven day run kicked off with a parade that started as the animals were unloaded off of a train near 1035 W. Amelia, then the animal caravan traveled east on Amelia, south on North Hughey Ave., then west on West South St. to arrive at the Amway Center. The parade was quite a site for onlookers in downtown but well worth the temporary traffic jam. The mystique and beauty of R.M.S. A “Painful” Truth for Florida Doctors... To Treat or Not to Treat with Oxy By Mark NeJame David L. Jancha, Associate Attorney with NeJame Law, contributed to this article Read more at: StyleToMe.com
> Over the past few years there has been a significant amount of media attention regarding the State of Florida and prescription drug abuse. Most of the attention seems to be focused on pain medications such as oxycodone. Florida has been called the “epicenter” of the problem and Interstate 75 has been labeled the “oxy express”. In 2011 it was reported that doctors in Florida prescribed 10 times more oxycodone pills than every other state in the country combined. However, changes in the law and prescription databases are approaches which law enforcement has used as tools to “fix the problem.” It goes without saying that avoiding overdoses, illegal drug abuse, and any related crime is obviously very important to all of us. At NeJame Law, our attorneys have represented many doctors and been able to see first hand doctors who have rightfully and wrongfully been the target of governmental investigations. The investigations have included accusations that doctors were conspiring with patients to traffic in pain pills, trafficking in pain pills themselves, and even money laundering. With the potential for a criminal accusation looming over a doctor’s head -treating a patient with any controlled pain medication can make the practice of medicine a little scary. These accusations have a potential criminal penalty such as a 25-year minimum
STYLETOME.COM
mandatory sentence for a total pill weight of 28 grams (1 oz.) or more.To put this into perspective, this is the same penalty for having ‘one ounce’ of heroin! Even if entirely innocent, these accusations irreparably affect a doctor’s reputation, the doctor’s license, and even affect his or her personal life. They ultimately affect the doctor’s entire practice, including, the other patients in need of medical treatment. Which brings us to an interesting dilemma: Where is the balance between a doctor’s obligations to his or her patient AND addiction/the associated side effects of prescription pain medications?
“With the potential for a criminal accusation looming over a doctor’s head -treating a patient with any controlled pain medication can make the practice of medicine a little scary.” Just like a client comes to an attorney regarding a legal matter; a patient comes to a doctor looking for help and guidance regarding one’s health. An attorney may refer to the Oath of Attorney to resolve an ethical dilemma. A doctor may turn to the Hippocratic Oath for guidance. Depending on
the translation and version; there is a portion of the Hippocratic Oath which states that a doctor will “prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and judgment and never do harm to anyone.” The Hippocratic Oath does not appear to give clear guidance. Like all humans, not all doctors agree. On one side, a doctor should not treat a patient with chronic pain using the most effective prescription pain medication because it may cause harm: addiction and side effects. On the other hand, a doctor should treat a patient with chronic pain using the most effective prescription pain medication because the regiment is “good” for the patient and outweighs any harm: potential addiction or side effects. Some have been very caring and concerned. Although the risks of addiction are there, seeing a patient in chronic debilitating pain is not acceptable. The painful truth seems to be that because there is no clear solution both patients and doctors alike must be extremely cautious before taking or prescribing pain medications. Addiction or incarceration are just two possible alternatives without exercising caution.<

Hilton Orlando is known for its creativity when it comes to food and drinks. The culinary team is always looking for ways to impress guests with their unique creations and preparation methods. Chef Thomas Huebner is one of the advocates for this creativity and recently spent some time talking about one of his favorite culinary tools. Why do they call you the Mad Scientist? Because I am mad about great food. One of my favorite techniques is using liquid nitrogen which is 321 degrees below zero. I call it anti-cooking. What is your Chef story? I come from Austria and started by learning pastry which Austria is famous for. Recently, I was promoted to Hilton Orlando’s Executive Sous Chef which is not only a great honor but very unusual for a Pastry Chef. Now I am involved in all aspects of the kitchen from what comes in the back door to what arrives before the guest. You are married to a Chef. Is that chemistry too? Yes, my wife is a Chef and she does all the cooking at home. We cannot be in the kitchen at the same time. We relax together by watching the Food Channel. What is the kitchen like at Hilton Orlando? That is where the magic happens! 80% of the food we serve comes from farms and ranches within 100 miles of Orlando. Hilton Orlando’s Executive Sous Chef Thomas Huebner

The Venetian Room at the Caribe Royale Orlando The Vision of Chef Khalid Benghallem By Jennifer Marcus
> Having just celebrated its 10th anniversary this past Oc-
tober, The Venetian Room at the Caribe Royale All-Suite and Convention Center has become one of the most divine restaurants in the Greater Orlando area. Famous for its heavenly lobster bisque canopied with puff pastry, The Venetian Room trumps the competition in a saturated restaurant market, with attention to detail, elite quality of food, and because of Chef Khalid Benghallem’s vision and talent. Benghallem was part of the opening team more than a decade ago and has overseen and crafted a thriving eatery ever since. Leading up to this dream job, Benghallem’s fascination with food as a young boy in Morocco came from his father who was a hotel general manager. “He would take me into the kitchen to learn from the staff and I worked very closely with an older chef who worked there,” said Benghallem. Culinary school was an obvious choice and he attended the Ecole Hôtelière de Rabat in his home country of Morocco. After he traveled throughout France and Spain, Benghallem was recruited by Disney’s Epcot to work at the legendary park in Orlando, FL. Along with being on the opening teams of both Emeril’s Orlando and Shula’s Steak House, Benghallem became the sous chef at Epcot’s restaurant, Marrakesh, tucked in the “country” section of Morocco giving tourists an authentic experience and taste from that land. Prior to coming to the Caribe Royale and The Venetian Room, chef Khalid Benghallem was recognized two years in a row as

COCKTAIL HOUR
Š
Barfly A Cocktail for the Ages Travis Joiner Read more at: StyleToMe.com
> The life of a cocktail has gone through many transformations throughout the years. One can argue where they originated and how they came about but there is no doubt as to what we are doing with them now. The ability to find a new way to develop cocktails is thanks to the knowledge and the ability of the bartenders who choose to develop and hone their craft.Without these knowledgeable professionals “playing with drink recipes and how they are presented one wonders if we would ever come up with what we are starting to see trending now. The time of the barrel aged cocktail is here and I, for one, am happy to see it. While this idea has been around in some areas in small amounts it is starting to get noticed here. As in most building of cocktails this idea is also formed in parts. One part playfulness, two parts ingenuity, add a dash of depravity and voila the barrelaged cocktail is ready for 2013. A big force behind this is the willingness of the spirit companies to support the abilities of these creative bartending minds. With the growing numbers of small batch distillers out there listening to what mixologists want to create, this trend will be popping up soon in your local drinking establishment. While you will not see it everywhere, thank goodness, you know if your local barkeep is one of those creative souls always tinkering with the shiny new toys in the industry.
STYLETOME.COM
The vessel that will deliver this growing trend to our favorite drinking guinea pigs is a result of phenomenal support from those cutting edge distillers who see and believe in what professional bartenders can create. The new toy that makes all this possible is a small wooden barrel that will fit behind the bar. In most cases you are looking at a small wooden barrel that will hold one to two gallons at most. The best part is it is small enough for you to invent and play without costing a fortune. It also allows the pre-mixed cocktail to be done in small batches so you can hone it to your taste and needs. My hat is off to these distillers, which range from small batch vodka makers to whiskey distillers, who have helped create these lovely little aging barrels. The time in the barrel will change depending on the mystical brew created and will be tweaked to the discretion of the mind behind it. There are even those distillers out there making a higher proof version of their product to allow longer aging in these barrels. It all adds up to a new concept for all who dare to give it a shot. The want to create new ways to experience flavors and styles through cocktails is not
new but this is. Bartenders have been building many styles of cocktails for their friends and patrons for years now. The barrel aged cocktail will allow them to create and age something new right in the comfort of their bar. This process will allow them to build flavors however their wicked mind chooses and then age them in-house until they are ready. The plus is rather than making a single cocktail for a customer it will allow them the ability of making large batch cocktail recipes that will last longer than just making a punch or shrub (not what Monty Python was talking about) for the evening. With all the tools and flavors that have become available in recent years the combinations are endless. I for one look forward to see what my like-minded friends come up with. So when you see a small aging barrel when you walk into your local bar or restaurant, please ask your bartender what they have in there. I assure you they will appreciate the chance to share their creation and open your eyes to a new concept in the ageless, well maybe now better coined phrase, timeless cocktail. <

Dr. Harleen Anderson Photo by Steven Miller
> Dr Harleen “Leena” Anderson knew she wanted to be a physician very early and decided to follow in her immigrant parents’ footsteps. As the daughter of a family practioner and a cardiologist, she knew the hard work and sacrifices she would make as a successful physician, wife, and mother. Her parents told her that there is no other job that will give her the satisfaction of medicine. Physicians relieve suffering and can improve an individual’s health.

After graduating suma cum laude from Tufts Unversity, Leena went back home to Ohio for medical school. She started her medical training at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and completed her fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at Albert Einstein University in New York City. At Einstein, she participated in research on angioedema, presented complex cases at the Allergy and Immunology national meetings, and spent the early years of her career taking care of pediatric patients with HIV and refractory asthma. Her pediatric patients have always held a special place in her heart. Dr. Anderson sees both adults and children. “I want to help my patients feel better. It is a gift and privilege to be able to help patients of all ages.” As most Floridians know, warm climate fosters perpetual sniffles and sneezes from continual allergen exposures. Dr. Anderson prides herself on keeping up with treatment breakthroughs to help her patients in this “hostile” allergy environment. Along with extensive schooling, her uncommon abil-

ity to explain medical diagnoses in layman’s terms enhances each patient’s understanding of their ailment and, in turn, improves treatment success. As a lifelong allergy sufferer, she is sensitive to her patient’s needs. After her husband finished his cardiology training in Vermont, they relocated to Florida. Once she joined Drs Jacinto and Rosenberg at Allergy and Asthma Associates of Central Florida, she discovered, to her surprise, her “snowbird” patients had followed her. One couple drives two hours each way! It is certainly for her communication skills and for her sharp diagnostic skills--could it also be for her fashion and style? In truth, if Dr. Anderson had not chosen medicine, she may have followed a career in fashion. Cultivated by her childhood love for art and her time in Manhattan, she has developed a knack for style. She is gifted with her ability to style both herself and her friends. She loves the hunt for good clothes at good prices. Fortunately for her patients, it has become a hobby and not her career. Leena loves to spend time with her son, the family dog and her husband, Dr. Phillip Anderson. She loves modern art, traveling, a good deal, and cooking. She keeps herself fit, playing field hockey and exercising daily. Leena wakes up passionate about starting each day as a mother, a wife and an allergy immunology doctor. <

Dr. Keshini Parbhu Ophthalmologist
> Keshini Parbhu helped form Orlando Eye Institute in 2010 when she saw there was a void of certified oculoplastic surgeons in Orlando. In those two years, she has formed an indelible impression with referring physicians and patients. She has done this with a blend of artistry, creativity, and surgical prowess, which has reflected in her postoperative outcomes. “Quality of life is very important to my patients. I want them to feel comfortable with the functionality of their outcomes, as well as their cosmetic appearance.” Oculoplastic surgery is a relatively new field that blends elements of ophthalmology, the medical field specializing in the eye, and general plastic surgery. This makes Dr. Parbhu an ideal person to perform surgery on the eyelids and in the orbit, since she is familiar with the nuances of each field. After finishing college at Duke University, she moved to Nashville, TN, where she obtained her medical doctorate at Vanderbilt University. She stayed on at Vanderbilt to do an internship in general surgery before completing a residency in ophthalmology at Vanderbilt Eye Institute. Although she liked ophthalmology, Dr. Parbhu missed some of the aspects of her general surgery internship and decided to do a two-year ASOPRS fellowship in oculoplastic surgery at the University of AlabamaBirmingham. The American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) is a prestigious group of select ophthalmologists who have undergone extra training and are committed to advanc-
ing education, research, and the quality of clinical practice in the fields of aesthetic, plastic and reconstructive surgery specializing in the face, orbits, eyelids, and lacrimal system. After completing the fellowship, she underwent a rigorous certification process and is now certified by ASOPRS. She is also board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Parbhu is well-versed in a variety of lid procedures including blepharoplasty and ptosis repair, for both adults and children. She also offers treatment for tearing and orbital conditions such as thyroid eye disease and is proficient in treating trauma, such as lid lacerations or orbital fractures. Besides functional surgeries, she also offers a variety of cosmetic services including Latisse, cosmetic blepharoplasty, eyeliner tattoo, BOTOX®, and dermal fillers. “I think being a woman has given me a unique perspective on aesthetics and I try to bring that to my patients. It is important that they have a youthful appearance and yet look natural.” In her spare time, she loves to exercise and do yoga, bake treats for friends and family, and spend time with her husband and son. SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW
DOCTOR SHOPPING - BY MARK L. HORWITZ > It is a felony in Florida for a person to obtain a controlled substance, or prescription for a controlled substance without informing the doctor of the fact that the person received a similar prescription from another doctor within the previous thirty days.
Under Florida law, pharmacies must maintain prescription records for two years and those records are available to law enforcement without a warrant. Even Florida’s Constitution, which guarantees a right to privacy, does not prohibit police from obtaining prescription information from a pharmacy.
Law Offices of Mark L. Horwitz, P.A. 17 East Pine Street Orlando, FL 32801 P: 407-843-7733 F: 407-849-1321 mark@mlhorwitzlaw.com www.mlhoriwtzlaw.com

Anyone being treated by more than one doctor should be mindful of this law and advise their doctor of a narcotics prescription received from another doctor within the previous 30 days. The DEA, as well as state law enforcement, are increasing their scrutiny of pharmacies in an effort to curb prescription drug abuse.
SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE
Law enforcement efforts are aimed at detecting narcotic prescriptions obtained in violation of the law and have resulted in arrests of pharmacists and patients. Everyone should communicate truthfully with their doctors about previous prescriptions to avoid an inadvertent action that can result in a felony charge. When talking with the doctor about a prescription for narcotics which could be in violation of the “doctor shopping” statute, you should insure that the doctor or his staff note in the doctor’s records the prior prescription issue date, as well as the physician issuing the prior prescription. In this way, the doctor shopping law is not violated.<

DON‘T MISS THE BEAT
Eve To Adam By Riesa Pascal Read more at: StyleToMe.com
> What do you get when you combine adrenaline, high energy and talented musicians who like their rock music hard and LOUD? None other than the New York based heavy rock band, Eve To Adam. ETA-who recently completed two US tours with Creed-is made up of Taki Sassaris (lead vocals/guitar), Alex Sassaris (drums/backing vocals), Gaurav Bali (guitar/ backing vocals) and Luis Espaillat (bass). 2012 was quite the exciting year for ETA with touring in support of their 2011 album, “Banquet for a Starving Dog,” and working hard in the studio to produce another hit record. Style Magazines got to catch up with the busy band during their last day touring with fellow rock bands, Halestorm and In This Moment at this year’s Jagermeister Presents Tour. Check out what ETA had to say about their band, the tour, new music and what 2013 might have in store! Riesa: Let’s start with that unique band name! Where did “Eve to Adam” come from? ETA’s Taki Sassaris: The name came from a poetry book that my mother had given me back when I had first started this group and I had decided to go

on this endeavor. It comes from John Milton’s Paradise Lost. At the time I found it interesting cause I thought it was the kind of name that would allow us to grow. Overtime it’s become this sort of representation for the spectrum of humanity and the spectrum of temptation that rock and roll presents. Riesa: You guys are on the Jagermeister tour right now! How has that been? ETA’s Luis Espaillat: It’s been going great! This is our last day of the tour. We’ve been out for close to 6 weeks with Halestorm and In This Moment who have been phenomenal. It’s been a great metal rock show and it’s been fabulous. We’ve had a great time and are glad to be here. Riesa: How is this tour different from the Creed tour that ETA just went on? ETA’s Luis Espaillat: It’s a different demographic, a different style. We’re seeing with Halestorm and In This Moment another fan base--actually, a broader fan base would probably be more accurate--because

we do see younger fans as a whole, but we do see people bring their parents and their kids respectively. ETA’s Taki Sassaris: The cool thing too about the Creed tour was that even though the audience was seated for most of our set, the challenge was to really get them up out of their seats and we were successful in that. The great part was that through that entire 45 minute set, by the end of it, we had standing ovations. Riesa: Very awesome! Okay, let’s switch gears and talk about some of these awesome collaborations ETA have been working on. ETA’s Gaurav Bali: Well the first one is Eric Bass, the bass player from Shinedown. He’s actually based in Charleston, South Carolina. We flew down there and collaborated on a song called “Straight Jacket SuperModel” which we are playing in the set-we are really excited about it.We’ve just got a lot of new stuff. Riesa: I think all of your fans are excited too! Well to wrap up, how about everyone share their dream band tour and goal for 2013?
ETA’s Luis Espaillat: I’d probably say, opening for Foo Fighters--one of my favorites! They bring the same kind of energy we try to bring every night to our shows. For 2013, just to have a good time, all the time. Just keep on rocking and rolling and making better records. That’s what we’re trying to do.
ETA’s Alex Sassaris: Opening up for Aerosmith is my dream tour. That was my first concert! Goals for 2013 is to really expand our fan base and headline. ETA’s Gaurav Bali: My dream tour is Van Halen. I’d say goals for 2013 are probably the same for all of us. Just to keep pushing forward...keep touring. We’re gonna release a new record in March or April...just being on the road and hopefully, by sometime next year, have built up our fan base enough to be doing our own shows. ETA’s Taki Sassaris: It’s been a dream of mine since I was 13 years old to have a chance to play with Alice In Chains and
Whether they were answering my questions, teasing each other or making me cry with laughter--it was impossible to not see ETA’s camaraderie and the genuine passion they all share for music. BEST FRIENDS
Camp Out with Your Canine Pal Take them on a vacation that they will love By Jake White Read more at: StyleToMe.com
> February is the best time to take your best friend for a walk, a hike, or a full-out camping safari in Florida! But before you lace up your boots for a hike with your pet across the Hal Scott Preserve, remember some basic safety rules. • Carry enough water for you and your pet. Collapsible bowls and cups make drinking easy for your pet and easy for you to transport. • Take a first-aid kit. • Bring some food/treats for you and your pet – in case you get lost. • Let someone know where you are going. • Don’t let Rover drink from streams, lakes or puddles. Most streams carry Giardia lamblia, a microscopic organism that is the most frequent cause of non-bacterial diarrhea in North America.
For someone who wants to take their dogs camping for the first time...
• Watch where you fish. Recent reports state that NO fish should be eaten from the Econlockhatchee River.
• Don’t throw waste food anywhere near the campsite – your dog WILL find it.
• Beware of wildlife. Raccoons, skunks, and opossums could carry rabies. Several snakes have venom, which could kill Rover within minutes. In addition, loony Labradors chasing wildlife causes stress to the whole ecosystem. • Noise is good. Sneaking up on wildlife could promote an unwarranted attack. Likewise, if you don’t hear “normal” forest sounds, a predator might be near. Bobcats are not big kitties, they are dangerous!
STYLETOME.COM
• Use Frontline (Flea and Tick) and Heartgard (heartworm) preventative.
• Sausage is great, but goes quickly through a canine. • Freshly roasted marshmallows could burn the inside of your pooch’s mouth. • Until they become used to the sounds, most dogs will bark at every noise while you try to sleep. • Regardless of how you try, they will get dirty.Very dirty. Just enjoy the muck.
• Always use caution around the fire. • Camping chairs break, so don’t let your pet sleep under them. • Immediately designate the dog’s relief area, but not directly in path to your relief area. • Oh yeah, and wear at least sandals while walking at night.Yuck. If you are a bit more urban, you might want to take your pets to the Paws In The Park, on February 9, 2013 at Lake Eola. With the Mardi Paws theme this year, you (and your pet) will have a great time with bones and beads! why diagnoses go
WRONG and what you can do about it
A Q&A with Best Doctors’ Vice-Chairman, Evan Falchuk Q: If someone asked you to explain in 20 seconds what Best Doctors does, how would you answer? A: We are turning traditional notions of health care on their head. In today’s confusing maze of a health care system, we get people the right answers to their medical questions. We do this in lots of different ways, but all of it involves figuring out what is actually wrong, asking the right questions, and getting the right answers from the world’s best expert physicians. Today, we serve 30 million members around the world, and we believe that through our work we are on our way to changing health care forever. Q: Can you give us an example of a case where Best Doctors corrected a diagnosis? A: My favorite example is close to home — my own brother, Brad. He’s the co-creator of the TV show “Glee,” and before coming to Best Doctors, he was incorrectly diagnosed with a malignant tumor in his spinal cord. His doctors had scheduled him for radiation and surgery to get rid of the tumor, which is actually the right thing to do for that kind of condition. The trouble is, that wasn’t the condition he had. So we reviewed all of his medical information and family medical history, and our doctors found a clue that ended up being lifesaving for him. It turned out we have a family history of a condition that could easily be confused for a malignant tumor. Best Doctors recommended some additional tests, which confirmed that he didn’t have a tumor at all. The treatment that was originally planned was in fact very dangerous, given his actual condition. Today, having received both the right diagnosis and right treatment from Best Doctors, he is doing great. What’s amazing about my brother’s case is that stories like his are more common than most of us think.
Our U.S. data from 2011 showed 29% of people had been misdiagnosed, while 60% required a change in treatment.
Q: The public is starting to hear more about how often people are misdiagnosed, and about getting second opinions. In this day and age, why is misdiagnosis happening so often in the first place? A: Doctors today are the best educated and best trained than at any time in history. They have the best technology out there, and every year more and more treatments are available. So how can misdiagnoses still happen? The problem, we believe, is in how our health care system works. Doctors sometimes have to see 30 or more patients a day, and often can spend only 15 minutes or less with each one. What’s happening is that doctors and patients just don’t have the time together that they need to ask all the right questions, and make the best decisions. It’s why we believe that misdiagnosis is a public health problem that doesn’t get the attention it absolutely deserves. Q: How long has Best Doctors been around? What was the genesis of the company? A: Best Doctors has been doing this work for almost 25 years. My father is one of the founders. He is an internist and professor of medicine and saw the problem of quality in medicine from his work as a doctor. He knew that as a doctor and a teacher he could only reach so many people. His vision in creating Best Doctors was to reach millions more. It’s inspiring to be part of a team that is making this vision a reality.
WHAT CAN PEOPLE DO TO AVOID BEING
MISDIAGNOSED? 1. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. You should never be a spectator in your own care. It’s your health, and your life. 2. Always get a second opinion and focus on sharing your symptoms, rather than the diagnosis you received from your initial treating doctor. 3. Take the time to get to know your family medical history – and make sure your doctor knows about it. 4. Take someone with you to your doctor’s visits to help listen, take notes, and ask questions. 5. If you’ve been diagnosed with a type of cancer, always have your pathology re-checked.
Q: What makes doctors the “Best?” How does Best Doctors choose its physicians?
causing your problems. Don’t be afraid to ask — it’s your health, and your life.
A: We think the very best doctors are the ones who make good, thoughtful decisions. Now, one way to do this would be to watch every doctor practice, but obviously that’s not practical. So what we set out to do over two decades ago was ambitious and game-changing. We wanted to ask doctors all across the country, and across all of the many specialty areas of medicine who, in their experience, they thought were the best at what they do. It’s a little bit like what doctors do themselves when they look for doctors — they ask their peers for their honest perspective.
If you’re going to get surgery or you have a serious illness, always get a second opinion. Making sure you are comfortable that you understand what is happening and what is being planned for you is a really important way to avoid problems. Focus on telling your second-opinion doctor all of your symptoms, rather than influencing her thinking right off the bat by repeating what your first doctor said you have.
Today, we have assembled a respected database of nearly 50,000 doctors that represent the top 5% of doctors across 45 specialties and more than 400 subspecialties of medicine. It’s an incredibly powerful tool. And it’s completely independent. Doctors can never pay to get on our Best Doctors in America list, nor are they (or we) ever paid if they’re voted on to the list. The only way to be on the list is for their peers, the best in their fields, to name them to it. It is, in fact, a singular honor to be a Best Doctor.
It’s hard to listen to difficult medical news and pay close attention to details at the same time, so take someone with you to doctor’s visits to help listen, take notes, and ask questions.
Q: What would you give as the #1 reason why Best Doctors continues its efforts to improve health care? A: The biggest reason why we come to work each day at Best Doctors is because we believe everyone should get the right care. While most people get the right care, far, far too many people still do not. There isn’t an easy way to fix the health care system, but we know we don’t need to wait for that — we can help people through our approach and physicians’ expertise today, and so we do. Q: What can people do to avoid being misdiagnosed? A: The best thing you can do is to ask questions. You should never be a spectator in your own care. Ask why your doctor thinks your diagnosis is right. Find out what else could be
Take the time to get to know your family medical history — and make sure your doctor knows about it.
If you’ve been diagnosed with a type of cancer, always have your pathology re-checked. If you had a biopsy and your diagnosis is based on your original pathology report, be sure to get it reviewed again. We all have the power to make a real difference in our own care or that of a loved one.

> Frank R. Hellinger, Jr, MD, PhD has been in practice in the Orlando area since August of 1998. Prior to his arrival in Central Florida he was the co-director of Interventional Neuroradiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Dr. Hellinger received his medical degree from the University of Miami in 1989. From 1989-1990, he trained as a medical intern at what was then known as Orlando Regional Medical Center. Between 1990 and 1995, he completed radiology residency and fellowship in interventional neuroradiology at Harvard Medical School’s Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He then rose to the position of co-director of Interventional Neuroradiology at the MGH before returning to his hometown of Orlando to join a private practice in radiology. Since then, he as developed a practice exclusively focused on Interventional Neuroradiology and is now the most experienced practitioner in his field in the state. His practice has been limited to Interventional Neuroradiology since 1999.
Patients with diseases of the major blood vessels of the brain face the threat of lifeending or severely life-altering events. They deserve the skill, experience and compassion of physicians exclusively dedicated to their condition, physicians whose dedication is not compromised by other less demanding pursuits.
Interventional Neuroradiology is the practice of endovascular procedures to treat major blood vessel diseases of the brain, head, neck and spine. This includes carotid stenting, endovascular treatment of cerebral aneurysms and vascular malformations and intracranial and vertebral artery angioplasty and stenting. Dr. Hellinger and his partner, Dr. Michael Bellew, MD, are the only endovascular specialists in Central Florida who provide 24/7/365 coverage for all of interventional neuroradiology, including emergency intervention for acute stroke.
Board Certification: American Board of Radiology
SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE
In the past, many of the conditions currently treated by endovascular means were treated by open, neurosurgical techniques. There remain conditions that require both open neurosurgical and closed endovascular specialists and as a result, Interventional Neuroradiology should now be part of any comprehensive neurosurgical practice. Reflecting this evolution, Dr. Hellinger joined Orlando Neurosurgery in May of 2008. Orlando Neurosurgery has become one of the largest, most comprehensive, most stable and seasoned group of practitioners in the state. It is at their offices in Winter Park that Dr. Hellinger provides consultative services for his patients.
Education: BS, University of Florida; PhD, University of Washington; MD University Miami, Radiology Residency and Interventional Neuroradiology Fellowship: Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. Special Interests: Carotid Artery Stenosis, Cerebral Aneurysms, Vascular Malformations, Stroke. <

The practice is based on combining the art and science of traditional vascular surgery with the ever-expanding options offered by endovascular and minimally invasive techniques to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients. At The Vascular Surgery and Vein Care Center, we provide a full spectrum of vascular services ranging from treating varicose veins, spider veins and cosmetic vein care, to complex vascular problems and diseases including aneurysms, carotid disease, dialysis access and peripheral artery disease (PAD).
SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE
Our office is designed to create a warm, inviting and relaxing environment for the comfort of our patients. Our staff is knowledgeable, courteous and compassionate and our patients are treated with dignity and respect. We strive for excellence. Therefore, our practice is devoted to delivering the best quality care to our patients, whether it may be lifesaving surgery or cosmetic vein care. Our goal is to exceed expectations and leave a lasting impression. Dr. Garnette’s professional background, training and commitment to his patients are all outstanding, but what sets him apart is his surgical skill, dedication to patient care, and his ability to understand and relate to patients. He is motivated by his commitment to achieve the best possible results for his patients. Vascular surgery is a very complex specialty, and often, patients are very sick. Dr. Garnette believes it is critical, as a surgeon, to keep evolving and always seeking to improve. This is a remarkably impressive goal, but such lofty standards are second nature to this accomplished surgeon. “I am driven by my quest for excellence and my desire to achieve perfection,” says Dr. Garnette, “it is both my blessing and my curse.” <

Dr. Jere Mammino
Advanced Dermatology Photo by Steven Miller
> It protects you from harsh temperatures and damaging sunlight. It prevents infection and helps you turn vitamin D to calcium for healthy bones. It is skin, the largest organ on the body and probably the most taken for granted. “When people find an unusual rash or spot, they tend to ignore it, thinking it will go away,” said Jere Mammino, D.O., FAAD, FAOCD, a board certified dermatologist. “But rashes are easier to treat early on. Skin cancer, if detected early, is much easier to cure.” That is why skin cancer and mole checks are part of his routine office visits at Advanced Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery in Oviedo, FL., where Dr. Mammino has been practicing for 20 years. He practices medical and surgical dermatology, and specializes in the treatment of psoriasis. Other doctors on staff offer cosmetic dermatology. Whether he is removing warts or melanoma, Dr. Mammino enjoys practicing dermatology. “I’m a visually oriented person and I like treating what I see. You can’t see high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol,” he said. “What’s also nice about dermatology is that it allows me to treat patients of all ages, men and women, using both medicine and surgery.”

It is especially satisfying to clear the skin of a patient with psoriasis because in addition to the disease’s physical impact, it can take an emotional toll, Dr. Mammino noted. In recent years, a number of new therapies have been approved to treat psoriasis, which has no known cause or cure. A new class of drug called biologics has been very effec-

tive for treating widespread disease. New creams and ointments can be used to control localized disease. “We can’t cure it, but we can control it,” he added. Dr. Mammino would like to control the rising rates of skin cancers, as well. With the second highest rate of melanoma in the country, people in the Sunshine State have to be especially vigilant about checking their skin. In Florida, most insurance companies don’t require members to get permission from their primary care doctor to see a dermatologist. “They can go directly to a dermatologist who is the primary care doctor for the skin, hair and nails,” he said. In his spare time, Dr. Mammino serves as a volunteer faculty member at two local medical schools. He provides free skin cancer screenings at health fairs and work places, and volunteers his time treating patients at a local health clinic. He lectures to physicians at national professional meetings and to the public at local venues, such as the YMCA. Dr. Mammino is the current Secretary/Treasurer of the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, as well. Every year, he participates in one or two medical mission trips where his desire to “give back” compliments his love of travel. Whether Dr. Mammino is across the world or in Oviedo, his philosophy is to treat patients the way that he would like to be treated. “I enjoy taking my time with patients. By doing so, I get to know each patient as a person and not just a disease,” he said. “Being able to help them is what drives me.” <

Upon receiving his first medical degree, he and his family moved to Boston, Massachusetts where he began his residency in Dermatology at Tufts University School of Medicine and Boston City Hospital. He became Chief Resident during his last year. His residency training was interrupted by a two-year tour in the United States Air Force where he served as a Dermatologist and Venereal Disease Control Officer.

and personal growth groups and intensive workshops both nationally and internationally throughout the year. I also work with individuals, couples and groups in my office which is located in Winter Park, FL. MY MISSION IS THIS:
I offer my clients a variety of psychological and spiritual modalities because all of us are both human and divine. Sometimes, we focus on just one aspect of ourselves, neglecting the other and that is why we still feel a longing for something more. Something bigger. A life that we can live more authentically. A holistic approach includes both our psychological and spiritual natures and offers a better solution for healing. I began my own personal healing journey in 1982 which exposed me to many different healing modalities and traditions. To compliment my traditional mental health training, I weave the threads of both ancient and traditional psychological and spiritual methods to support the healing of codependency, abuse, family of origin and an-

Our Town Wicked Orlando’s Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre will be home to Wicked, the well loved and critically-acclaimed Broadway musical, from February 20, 2013 to March 10, 2013. Revisit the magical Land of Oz years before Dorothy’s arrival and meet the young women who later became the unforgettable witches of Oz. Wicked presents a tale parallel to L. Frank Baum’s much adored The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and re-imagines the circumstances that shaped the emergence of the Wicked Witch of the West, the Wicked Witch of the East, and the Good Witch of the North. Wicked also reveals the personas behind the characters that accompanied Dorothy and Toto down the Yellow Brick Road in a journey to Emerald City – Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion.
During the three-week run of Wicked at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, the show times are at 8pm from Tuesday to Saturday, with matinee shows at 2pm every Saturday. The performances every Sunday are at 1pm and 6:30pm. The performance running time is 2 hours and 45 minutes with 1 intermission.

> Did The Beatles have it right when they said, “all you need is love”? Is it possible that being in love could increase your health while decreasing stress? The answer to all of theses questions is yes! The Huffington Post reported that a study out of the State University of New York have proven that relationships, both good and bad, can increase the longevity of your life. Scholars at the University found that social situations, such as love, have positively constructed blood pressure and cardiovascular health in their subjects. So now we ask, “what’s love got to do with it?”
All You Need Is Love By Samantha Millgate Read more at: StyleToMe.com
Participants in the State University of New York study experienced lower levels of blood pressure thus allowing the brain, kidneys, and heart to function effectively. When the participants were in the presence of their partner, professor of psychology Brooks Gump said blood pressure lowered, and “The lowering was not a big difference, but it’s significant.” Now that’s a whole new meaning to the term “love medicine.” Another significant study out of the National Institute of Medicine in Washington, D.C. discovered that in countries such as the United States, Scandinavia, and Japan, premature death or illness was a direct connection to those who isolate themselves from others. It’s safe to say that human contact relieves physiological concerns, subtracting stress from the equation and adding love’s natural benefits. Associate professor of psychology Julianne Holt-Lunstad claims that emotional support and honest advice can “help us cope with stress…[and] buffer the negative effects.” It has also been discovered that those who are in happy marriages tend to
attend regular doctor visits and are encouraged by their spouses to engage in preventative treatments. Arthur Aron attributes this to the fact that “when you’ve just fallen in love and the person goes out of your sight for five minutes, you think,‘Are they dead? Did they find someone else?’” Couples overall concern for each other promotes awareness for health related issues, urging them to keep informed. Match. com correspondent and physician Redford Williams, M.D. says “people adopt safer behaviors when they’re coupled up… For example, you’re less likely to risk your life with smoking, binge drinking, or dangerous eating habits if a loved one is depending on you.” It’s not only the physical and emotional presence of your significant other that has staying power, its also chemical. The hormone oxytocin is said to improve mood, stress, and blood pressure that is released when you hug or hold hands with that special someone. Those who are married are also less likely to suffer from diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease than those who are single. Stress weakens the immune system so lower stress levels keep you healthier, longer. Author of Younger Next Year, Dr. Harry Lodge explains that love “brings the right chemicals, the right nutrients” allowing your body to “heal in all the different areas that otherwise are chewed up with stress.” Cupid better sharpen his arrows and strengthening his biceps, people are going to be scrambling to get “that loving feeling” this Valentines Day. <
Dr. Palceski – Ask The Expert: Dr. Palceski is a Board Certified Dermatologist and Dermatologic Surgeon and is the founder and medical director of Reflections Dermatology & Center for Skin Care located in Baldwin Park. Dr. Palceski has been a contributing medical expert with Orlando Style for the past several years and looks forward to continuing to answer questions from our readers. Please direct all questions to drp@reflectionsdermatology.com. Q. This new year, I’ve made a resolu-
tion to take better care of my skin. Do you have any suggestions or favorite skin care products that you can recommend? Good skin care doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it can be as easy as 1, 2, 3 - 1) cleanse 2) hydrate and 3) protect. When getting started, keep it simple. You are more likely to stick with a new routine that is easy to follow. In regard to specific product lines, some of my personal favorites are VIVITÉ® and Glytone®. A Clarisonic® Exfoliating Brush is another must have. A.

Q. Despite all the rest and relaxation I
just had on my vacation, I feel like I still look tired. Is there anything I can do to look more rested? A. BOTOX® is by far the procedure
I find to have the highest degree of
patient satisfaction in addressing this very issue. BOTOX® works directly to relax the muscles responsible for frowning and other unwanted furrows and creases around the eyes and forehead. Relaxing the muscles responsible for these expressions results in a more rested appearance. This procedure combined with a good night’s sleep, a healthy diet, and regular exercise will get you on your way to looking rested and rejuvenated. Q. I just turned 40 and am starting
to notice a lot of sun damage and age spots on my face and chest that I didn’t used to have. Is there anything I can do to get rid of these spots and to even out my skin tone? A. Most cases of discoloration, age
spots and freckles that appear on the face, chest, and shoulders are the result of repeated exposure to the sun’s intense and harmful rays. People in
sunnier climates, like Florida, are much more prone to sun spots and loss of elasticity in these areas. To eliminate these spots, I typically recommend a series of 2-3 Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) laser treatments. In addition to spots, many people also complain that their skin looks leathery and/or wrinkly. In this case, I strongly recommend fractionated laser treatments to refine skin texture and improve the overall appearance of the skin. When IPL and fractional laser treatments are used in combination, the results are quite remarkable and can literally turn back the clock on the look and feel of your skin. As always, daily use of sunscreen is imperative for maintaining results and preventing future damage.
