Orlando Magic Rookie Mohamed Bamba is ready for prime time. The Orlando Magic made a few right moves in attempt to rebuild for the upcoming season. In attempt to improve their defense, the Magic chose Mohamed Bamba sixth overall in the 2018 NBA Draft. Measuring 7 feet 10 inches, Bamba’s massive wingspan sets the NBA Combine record, and we have high hopes it’ll bring some magic to the team. The former Texas Longhorns star played in 30 games with 29 starts last season as a freshman, averaging 12.9 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.70 blocks in 30.2 minutes per game, while shooting .541 (146-270) from the floor. He led the Big 12 in rebounding, blocked shots and double-doubles. With the Magic building their core of young players, they have the foundation to defend the pick-and-roll which can be a nightmare to defend when executed correctly. Along with their newest addition, Aaron Gordon’s re-sign and Jonathan Isaac’s injury recovery is a recipe for a successful season. Defensive trio Bamba, Isaac and Gordon may be missing puzzle piece to finally turn things around for the Magic. The former Texas Longhorns
center’s outstanding wingspan and impressive defense mechanics are what got him drafted, however questions exist about his consistency. “Just who I am as a competitor,” Bamba said. “Obviously, I’m not going to sit here and say things are going to change overnight. It takes more than just one person. I truly believe my teammates around me we have the right people to make the organization successful.” We are thrilled to welcome Bamba to our home team and the Orlando Magic has high hopes for his future impact. “We think Mo has the potential to be one of the elite defenders in the league,” Magic President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman said. “Obviously he is going to have to work hard to get there and it will take some time. He’s already in his short time playing in college proven to be an elite-level shot blocker. He’s got good feet, he’s a smart player. We don’t just draft a player, we draft a person. He’s a unique individual who happens to be a unique basketball player as well.” Mo Bamba may just bring a little more magic to our team resulting in a successful comeback season.

Select Orlando, Definition of Luxury
LUXURY
LUXURY defined Select Orlando’s collection of some of the world’s most difficult-toacquire luxury brands is truly jaw dropping. By Mary Martin Armstrong
I watched my designer-filled daydreams materialize right before my eyes as I walked through the doors of Select Orlando, a luxury boutique specializing in only the most exclusive Swiss watches, designer handbags and accessories. The store has a gorgeous modern interior that mimics the refined brilliance of its products; the displays are an image directly out of the fantasy book of any well-versed luxury shopper. In fact, “the definition of luxury,” is the motto of SelectOrlando, and one that it certainly lives up to. Upon entering Select Orlando, I was greeted by Nina Ogor and Jose Fernandes, whose warm and welcoming demeanor instantly made me comfortable and at ease in an environment so luxuriously overwhelming. “We are a family-owned company centered on providing excellent service,” said Jose, adding, “we want our customers to enjoy their shopping experience and walk out feeling excited and confident about their purchases.” Jose explained that because Select Orlando is independently owned and not tied to corporate branding, “We have the flexibility to bring more savings to customers. We are passionate and knowledgeable about our products and
ready to answer any questions whether the customer is a newcomer to the world of luxury or a seasoned collector.” Select Orlando gets new products in daily, products that are unique, exclusive, and not overproduced. At Select Orlando, you can walk right in and try one on for yourself, something that is entirely unheard of. But let’s not forgot about the storied Swiss-made timepieces; the options are endless and the selection is truly unrivaled. Select Orlando is able to easily source luxury Swiss watches. For shoppers looking for a specific product that may not be in stock, the store has the relationships to acquire exactly what you’re looking for and will work to source it as quickly as possible. “We believe you should celebrate the proud moments in life and treat yourself to the best that the world has to offer in luxury,” said Jose. “At Select we want you to feel good about your shopping experience for years to come.” It was clear to me that Select is eager to share its passion for luxury, and they couldn’t be more thrilled to offer the same quality shopping experience that I enjoyed with the rest of the Central Florida community.

PLEASE HELP. Tips to avoid a bad plastic surgery experience & where to turn for a successful correction. As the city’s luxury lifestyle magazine, we are tasked to cover Central Florida’s social scene and many other local topics. After years of mingling at galas and getting to know the city’s movers and shakers on a personal level, it became apparent that there’s an underlying, deep insecurity even among some of Orlando’s who’s who. Some of this, we’ve come to discover, is rooted in a particular issue. It turns out that there are quite a few people suffering silently, haunted by the results of bad plastic surgery. In a modern world where society is laser focused on image, disfigurement from

elective surgery mistakes can be devastating to one’s self-esteem. Maybe it’s you or a close friend who’s going through this particular struggle. Like us, you probably have a million questions. We sat down with Orlando native and leading expert, Dr. Charles E. Newman Jr., who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. We asked him some tough questions, which he answered with a unique insight that only comes from many years of experience.
BEAUTY
Orlando Style: What is the biggest culprit
contributing to bad results/experience with plastic surgery procedures? Dr. Newman: The biggest culprit has to be
doctors who are performing procedures that they are not qualified to do. There is an important concept called “scope of practice.” We should go to an ophthalmologist for an eye exam and an obstetrician to deliver babies. Why would anyone go to either of these specialists for liposuction? Physicians who operate outside of their scope or area of expertise frequently have more problems and post-operative issues. It can be difficult to find out who is a true plastic surgeon and who may be trained in another specialty but may still be performing cosmetic procedures. So, I would tell your readers to ask their doctor point blank, “Are you board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?” Don’t be embarrassed to speak up because the stakes are too high. Having your procedure performed by a properly trained plastic surgeon does not guarantee a complication-free result, but does stack the deck in the patient’s favor. Further, when an unfortunate result does occur, the plastic surgeon is the one who is best trained to deal with the issue. To paraphrase a popular commercial, we know a thing or two because we’ve seen a thing or two. Residency and fellowship training provide years of fundamental knowledge in not just cosmetic procedures, but also trauma reconstruction, congenital cranio-facial issues, and breast cancer reconstruction just to name a few. The interplay between these diverse areas is immense and allows us to utilize a set of core principles to address sometimes complex differences in anatomy. This broad-based experience additionally gives unique insights to address the bad result from elective surgery. Another important element in the equation besides surgeon selection is procedure selection. There are a lot of well-intentioned physicians in this community who purchase the latest laser or non-invasive body contouring machine to add a new revenue stream to their practice. The truth, however, is that not every patient is a good candidate for these modalities. Plastic surgeons can look at a patient’s abdomen and decide if they need a tummy tuck, liposuction, or perhaps just diet and exercise. Another common example would be a facial rejuvenation patient; for these patients I can offer a face lift, fillers, laser resurfacing, etc. Whereas other providers may have a “hammer” and only see “nails”, plastic surgeons simply have a fuller “tool box” compared to other cosmetic providers. We don’t subscribe to a one size fits all approach and can tailor a treatment plan to fit the individual patient’s needs. Orlando Style: What are the top 3 most
important things to look for when you’re researching a plastic surgeon to work with?
Helpful Resources When Researching Plastic Surgery Providers:
Dr. Newman:
A mentor once taught me the three “A’s” of surgery: affability, ability, and availability. As a surgeon, you have to be likable, competent, and present when your patient needs you. When researching a plastic surgeon, it can’t be emphasized enough, make sure they are not just board certified, but board certified in plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgery is not the same thing. As we tell our patients, “Do your homework.” Ask about their training and residency, years in practice and American Board of Plastic Surgeons status. Take the time to look not only at their online reviews but at their actual licensure and credentials from the Board of Health. Make sure your physician has the experience necessary to handle your individual needs. Ask where they perform their surgeries. Many cosmetic surgeons generally do so within an office operating room because most of these physicians are blocked from getting actual hospital privileges. Most hospitals and accredited surgery centers grant privileges only within a physician’s area of core competency. How does the physician make you feel? The doctor should be personable, professional, and a good communicator. You should have a clear understanding of the plan for surgery, pre-and post-operative visit schedule, and follow-ups. Will you be seeing the surgeon for these visits? If the visit feels pressured or rushed, how do you think things will be handled if you’re having a problem? I am amazed when I hear stories of patients who did not meet their surgeon until the day of surgery. This should be a total red flag. Availability and access are of paramount importance. Orlando Style: What do you suggest to a patient
who has had bad plastic surgery performed by another plastic surgeon who may be scared to go through another surgery all over again to correct the problem. Any tips to help with the psychological scars? Dr. Newman: Patience is the key to
disappointment, as frequently problems at two weeks or a month disappear by three to six months. The body needs time to adjust to surgical alterations. For example, post-operative swelling following a nose job can influence the appearance for up to a year. During this postoperative period, try to maintain open lines of communication with your surgeon, express your concerns, and together formulate a game plan. If there truly was a complication or a bad result, then the most reassuring sentiment I can offer my patients is revisional treatment options. It’s important for patients to realize that a change has been made from their original baseline so now we’re working to revise the current state of the
body. In the case of breast implants, these may include doing nothing or may require temporary or permanent removal of the implants. Other times we need to release scar tissue; perhaps a change in implant volume would suffice. Fat grafting can mask irregularities and other devices can augment the soft tissue. Finally, a breast lift can often solve an asymmetric or less than ideal result. The key take home point is that there are solutions and the plastic surgeon can help offer the most prudent course of action. Orlando Style: What are some of Newman
Plastic Surgery’s success stories when it comes to repairing bad plastic surgery procedures done by other doctors? Dr. Newman: Secondary and revisional
procedures are some of the most common reasons people seek my consultation, with many coming from other parts of the state and far too many coming from other countries. All too often I leave a consultation room, scratching my head and wondering to myself, “How could this doctor even get this result?” When I get to the operating room, the first goal is to undo what was performed improperly. To this end, I need to figure out where the primary surgeon went wrong, which is not always the easiest task. One recent example is a face lift patient who was dissatisfied by another surgeon. The problem was that the surgeon put too much tension of the skin, which resulted in the tell-tale sign of pulled “pixie” ears and widened visible scars that migrated from their intended location. Revisional surgery entailed anchoring the deeper soft tissues to eliminate skin tension with an earlobe reduction. This was done in the office under local which saved the patient from having to go under general anesthesia a second time. Another recent example is a patient whose implants were too large for her frame. This caused the dreaded “bottoming out” where the implants are mal-positioned, falling below the breast fold. For this patient we had to strengthen her soft tissues, raising the fold and reinforcing it with a mesh-type framework. If people have questions or concerns about their specific situation, we take pride in providing quality service and advice. Dr. Charles E. Imagine a destination with non-stop energy, endless miles of beaches, and warm sunshine mixed with unparalleled luxury. A place where you can go to get away from it all, but still be in the mix of the excitement. A place of beauty and class combined with a tropical atmosphere. A place like the W Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Lounging glamorously on 315 feet of South Florida’s sugar-sand coastline, the W Fort Lauderdale occupies one of the most aweinspiring addresses in town. Guests will experience the best of Fort Lauderdale’s worlds with powdery sand and an ocean breeze on one side and intracoastal elegance on the other. The hotel consists of 517 rooms, suites and extended stay options that all feature expansive skyline views. Trust me when I say, you really won’t want to leave! There is so much more to the destination than the exquisite beaches though. You can sleep, eat and play all day! In fact, it’s happy hour every hour at W Fort Lauderdale where guests can enjoy signature cocktails at the chic-but-laid-back Living Room and socialize with the stylish crowd of visitors and locals. Adventures In Northern
MICHIGAN Unique experiences & memories to last a lifetime
By Riesa Pascal Though I am an avid traveler of the United States, somehow my travels have never led me to the “Great Lake State” of Michigan, so I jumped at the opportunity to not only visit Michigan, but to specifically experience the sights and sounds of Northern Michigan. For four breathtakingly beautiful days, my companions and I explored all that the destination has to offer its
visitors from Mackinac Island to Traverse City and everything in between. The adventure of a lifetime started with a scenic drive from the Traverse City Airport to Shepler’s Ferry in Mackinaw City. From there it was just a 12-minute ferry ride to a truly one-of-a-kind type of tourist attraction where time stands still and horses and bicycles are a part of everyday life...

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE
Known as the Crown Jewel of Michigan, Mackinac Island is as rare and precious as its nickname implies. The community is world renowned for their permanent banning of motor vehicles which has left its beautiful architecture and history immaculately preserved. As my companions and I made our way across the dock and stepped into the downtown area, we were instantly hit by the sweet and distinct smell of decadent fudge! Unbeknownst to me at the time, Mackinac Island is famous for their world-class fudge, but a tasty tour of Ryba’s Fudge Shop quickly brought me up to speed. With a glass of champagne in one hand and a rich piece of chocolate in the other, my taste buds and I instantly knew that we were right where I was supposed to be. Somehow we managed to pull ourselves away from the sweet desserts and hopped on what would be the first of many “taxi” rides through the quaint streets of the island. It’s worth noting that ordering a taxi on Mackinac Island is actually ordering a horse drawn carriage, and I wouldn’t want it any other way! Our hilarious carriage driver Logan proceeded to spill the hidden stories behind the walls around us as two black beauties, Prince and King, led our group on a scenic ride to Mission Point Resort. The award-winning hotel spans 18 acres of waterfront property on Lake Huron and with its coveted location on the sunrise side of the island, it didn’t take long to see why it was voted “Best Place To Stay” in Michigan by Condé Nast Traveler. From the moment I walked through the doors, genuine hospitality and simple comfort reigned supreme from every direction as smiling staff went out of their way to ensure everyone on property felt welcomed. Our first evening was spent as every vacation should in my humble opinion...with refreshing, handcrafted cocktails! Drinks and laughter by the resort porch carried over to wine over an elegant dinner at Chianti where we savored exquisite Italian cuisine accompanied by live piano
entertainment. The night was still young afterwards so we headed over to the Pink Pony—voted one of Michigan’s most iconic bars— and mingled with others who had come from near and far to experience the old school charm of Mackinac Island. The following morning was one of history and adventure with unparalleled views as we embarked on a guided, historic tour of Fort Mackinac. From there it was time to bid adieu to Michigan’s most beloved island retreat and head on to our next Northern Michigan destination, the treasured city of Petoskey. For accommodations in Petoskey we looked to the Terrace Inn, a Michigan Historic Landmark built in 1910 and opened in 1911. The Inn’s cozy “cottage” rooms appropriately reflected the charm of the surrounding city which we immediately set off to explore. From learning about Ernest Hemingway’s life at the Little Traverse City Historical Museum to scouring the nearby shores for ancient Petoskey Stones at Petoskey State Park, there was an abundance of activities occurring downtown including over 170 unique shops and fine restaurants. After an eventful afternoon of downtown Petoskey explorations, we headed to Stafford’s Pier Restaurant for premier waterfront dining. Built on the original pilings over the harbor, Stafford’s Pier Restaurant celebrates their maritime heritage with expertly prepared seafood that we enjoyed down to the very last morsel. After we wined and dined, it was time to unwind with a little more wine on the Pointer Boat as we toured the beautiful harbor and marveled at the unrivaled sunset reflecting off the still waters around us. I didn’t think it was possible for us to visit a city that could rival the simple charm of Petoskey, but I found a more than worthy contender in our third Northern Michigan destination. With so much to see and do, Charlevoix quickly became one of my favorite Michigan cities and one day was simply not enough to see it all. I found their nickname of
“Charlevoix the Beautiful” to be justified in every way as I admired the lovely results of Operation Petunia. The longtime tradition sees the Charlevoix community come together annually to plant beautiful petunias along a five mile stretch that passes right through the heart of the city. The highlight of our Charlevoix explorations came in the form of a Mushroom House Tour led by the vibrant and passionate owner of the tour, Edith Pair. Designed and built by Charlevoix native and architectural legend Earl Young, the Mushroom Houses are some of the most fascinating stone structures ever built and a definite must-see for any visitor to Charlevoix. Of course in Northern Michigan you can never spend enough time on the water so after our tour we hopped on a boat and made our way to lunch at The Landing Restaurant which welcomes guests via both car and boat. Outdoor seating along the peaceful waters and a familyfriendly atmosphere made it hard for us to leave long after our plates had been cleared. However, we only had one day left and there was still plenty to see. After several exhilarating, yet relaxing days traveling through Northern Michigan, we had finally ended up where our journey had started: Traverse City. After checking into the trendy Hotel Indigo, we wasted no time in creating unforgettable Traverse City memories with a winery tour and tasting at Mari Vineyards. Nestled on the Old Mission Peninsula, Mari Vineyards achieved the status of becoming the first Northern Michigan winery with an extensive underground barrel aging area which my companions and I were able to tour as we enjoyed a private wine tasting. Jenna, our passionate tour guide, showcased the depth of skill and knowledge found in the entire Mari Vineyards team as she expertly shared all about the vineyards and the tastings spread out before us. The lovely evening came to a close with dinner at Mission Table which features the best ingredients available from local
farms and fishermen, using only the freshest products. As with every other dining experience I had, Mission Table’s extensive menu proved that it was going to be difficult, if not impossible to order something I didn’t like. Our final day in Northern Michigan was a bittersweet one as we further explored Traverse City with the knowledge that we would soon be departing from this wondrous place. In making the most of our time, we laced up our sneakers and drove out to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore for a walk through what was named the “Most Beautiful Place in America” on ABC’s Good Morning America. Miles of sand beach and bluffs that tower 450 feet above Lake Michigan afforded us spectacular views of the beloved tourist destination. From there, we made our way home with adventurous and must-see pit stops along the way such as Cherry Republic and Fishtown. Needless to say, visitors clearly flock to Northern Michigan for a variety of reasons, but one thing is for certain. From world-class cuisine, craft beer and specialty wines to unique shopping, historical attractions and the ability to experience nature in its most raw and beautiful form— whatever type of vacation or adventure you are looking for, you are guaranteed to find it in Northern Michigan. In 2013 Nashville-based singersongwriter Patrick Davis turned an offer to perform as a solo artist at The Firefly Sunset Resort in Hope Town, Abaco, Bahamas into an opportunity. He saw the potential to turn a small solo gig into a songwriting festival and then brought the idea to life. The result of Davis’ decision was The 1st Annual Patrick Davis Songwriters in Paradise: Hope Town, and since the inaugural event, Davis has now overseen the creation of a number of highly successful Songwriters in Paradise Festivals. Each takes place at world-class resorts and hotels in beautifully unique locations throughout the Bahamas, Mexico and the United States. While each Songwriters in Paradise Festival is carefully crafted to adapt to each location, what never changes is night after night of the “In the Round” experience. This is an exclusive look into the circle of songwriters on stage swapping stories, anecdotes, and songs. The Ferrari Portofino is the new V8 GT set to dominate its segment thanks to a perfect combination of outright performance and versatility in addition to a level of driving pleasure and on-board comfort unparalleled on the market. Capable of unleashing a massive 600 cv and sprinting from 0 to 200 km/h in just 10.8 seconds, the Ferrari Portofino is the most powerful convertible to combine the advantages of a retractable hard top, a roomy boot and generous cockpit space complete with two rear seats suitable for short trips. The Ferrari Portofino is significantly lighter with the adoption of new components featuring innovative designs made possible by the use of cutting-edge production techniques. This, combined with a 40 cv higher power output than the California T, has resulted in a significant hike in performance and a corresponding drop in emissions. Vehicle dynamics benefit from the introduction, for the first time on this model, of electric power steering, the 3rd generation electronic differential (E-Diff3) and the latest evolution of the electronic suspension control system (SCM-E) integrated with Premium 9.1 ESP.
Breathtaking. Inside and out. The Ferrari Design Centre-penned Portofino is an aggressivelystyled car with a two-box fastback configuration – unprecedented in a coupé-convertible with a retractable hard top - that adds extra sleekness to its silhouette, lending it a sportier character without impinging on its elegance and dynamism.
As is always the case in Ferrari, the aerodynamic development process involved every single area of the car and its development, from the initial layout choices to the management of the flows involved in heat dissipation, and the definition of every single detail of the underbody and bodywork. 3 Unisex Fragrances! Les Eaux de Chanel Brace yourselves, beauty lovers! Chanel has just launched three brand-new unisex fragrances. This is exciting and unexpected, as the brand typically features scents that are traditionally very feminine. Inspired by the country landscape along the Normandy coast, PARISDEAUVILLE Eau de Toilette is a lively, aromatic scent with a radiant freshness—the fragrance of the open air. Venise
Inspired by the enchantingly exotic city Gabrielle Chanel revered, PARIS-VENISE Eau de Toilette is a composition of shadow and light, between freshness and sensuality. Biarritz

MICELLAR WATER
fact or fiction?
Micellar water has recently become the go-to beauty secret for those who want to achieve the flawless skin of a French girl. But what actually is micellar water? This popularized formula is a surfactant that clusters into balls called micelles and attracts dirt and oil. Micellar water was originally developed in France during the nineties when its running water was too harsh on the skin; however, it has garnered a huge following in the U.S. So why all the hype? Micellar water attracts dirt and oil without drying out the skin, as most products do not contain alcohol. The idea of a simple skincare routine has also received a lot of praise. You do not have to rinse your face after using micellar water, so it is great for traveling or for when running water is unavailable. Micellar water functions as a healthier alternative to makeup-removing face wipes, as it contains far less chemicals. Since rinsing is not required, micellar water can be used for quick touchups, like removing eyeliner smudges, for example. However, micellar water is not the miracle product we all thought it was. This formula initially received
a lot of attention for being better for the skin than running water, as it does not have a high mineral content. But is this relevant if we can assume users still shower with normal running water? Micellar water stays on the skin’s surface and does not penetrate, therefore it can leave surface residue. Due to this, particles can simply be spread around the face without actually being removed. So the sole use of micellar water as a cleanser can actually be detrimental to those who are prone to breakouts. Additionally, micellar water often fails to remove makeup thoroughly. If you are trying to rid your face of water-proof mascara or heavy foundation, this is not the best option for you. So what are the takeaways? Micellar water is great for traveling and a good substitute for face wipes. This formula works well with sensitive skin and will not leave it feeling dry or oily. It is also wonderful for quick touch-ups. However, if you are going to make micellar water part of your daily beauty routine, you should follow up with another cleanser to remove residue and avoid breakouts.

Fall Styling Tip #1 We all fell in love with our summer sundresses last season, and if you got attached, here are a couple tricks to keeping them in style this fall. One of the simplest ways to transition your sundresses is to switch out your strappy sandals for boots. Another good combination is to take your feminine sundresses and throw a leather jacket over to keep the summer chic feel with a pop of edge.
Fall Styling Tip #2 Layering is key to surviving the fall and chances are you already have the basic layering pieces from your summer wardrobe. A basic white t-shirt is a staple item that can easily be put under any fall coat. Pair any basic colored t-shirt with a statement jacket for an effortless autumn look.

FALL TRENDS YOU HAVE TO TRY
Your fall 2018 guide to staying on-trend Twice a year, fashion month leaves us wide-eyed and hungry for designers’ upcoming season trend predictions. There are always reoccurring themes within the designers’ collections, all executed uniquely. Earlier this year, the world’s most influential designers staged their Fall/Winter 2018 collections that have molded what we’ll wear this season. Here are some trends you absolutely must work this season. You won’t be left totally buggin’ over what to wear this fall, all thanks to Clueless’ Cher Horowitz. The 90’s fashion-forward it-girl continues to inspire designers to create their take and push limits of plaid ensembles. From Dontatella Versace to Michael Kors, models walked the runway with the recognizable, iconic Beverly Hills schoolgirl aesthetic. Put away your basic plaid flannel and make a statement by channeling your inner Cher with a plaid blazer and mini skirt. This charming look is perfect for the days that are challenging to dress because of the wishy-washy weather. To complete the look, pair it with a white t-shirt, closed-toe Mary Janes, throw on some high-knee socks or tights, or even try experimenting with colors and other patterns. Another prominent trend you need to try out this fall is futurism. Head to toe holographic looks
captivated audiences and all of us watching from home, making sure we don’t forget to hop on board this season. To make this tricky style simple yet still mesmerizing and flashy, matching one or two futuristic pieces with a simple outfit will have you radiating magic. Try pairing a white cable-knit sweater with holographic skirts or pants. See-through plastic is a material that is very popular right now. Be on the lookout for iridescent accessories to make yourself shine through the fall color scheme. 80’s trends are still being manipulated into modern day style and there’s no escaping them. Wearing full glam evening outfits as daywear is something to definitely try out on days when you need a little more sparkle. Western looks are also quite popular this fall. Chloé, Isabel Marant, and Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini have inspired this season to be a little more on the wild side with cowboy-inspired boots, western prints, suede, and fringe. Pair your cowgirl boots with a long sleeve knit dress for a western chic look. Animal print is timeless and easy to layer up with. Leopard and snakeskin printed outerwear are staples to your wardrobe this season. Printed coats make layering look effortless yet stylish.

You may not see the palms of palm trees falling, but believe it or not, fall is right around the corner. If you can’t wait to break out your boots and stand out in autumnal colors, easing your way into fall fashion when it’s still hot outside isn’t as hard as it seems. It’s time to exchange those open toe’d flip flops for something a little more classy and on trend. Your shoes tell a lot about who you are, so starting with fall footwear is the easiest way to make the transition. Chelsea boots are still prominent in menswear, and we won’t see them going away anytime soon. Chelsea boots are the perfect fall accessory because they can bring together an outfit or even be the statement piece. A neutral suede boot can make any basic outfit look stylish. You can even try complementing a leather jacket with black or brown leather boots. Incorporating jackets into your look may seem like the most difficult part when it still feels like summer. Nights get cool and breezy, so it’s perfect to wear a light jacket. Bomber jackets, cardigans,
flannels, and light leather jackets are all good options for this transitional period. A classic transitional piece is a denim jacket. Denim jackets have the ability to make any outfit look put together. They aren’t too heavy, so they’re perfect to pair with a basic outfit underneath such as black jeans and a t-shirt to stay cool and still rock the fall trend. Fall doesn’t mean you have to completely cancel out your summer clothes. When putting together your fall wardrobe, look for burgundy, greens, mustard, navy, browns, and camel. These autumnal shades complement each other well and give off the appearance that you know how to properly dress for the “confusing” in-between season. Knowing the ropes of rocking fall fashion when the weather is still hot will have you entering cool weather prepared, ahead of the game, and fashionforward. Letting go of summer doesn’t sound too bad now, does it?

DON’T MISS THE BEAT
On September 16, Fall Out
Boy brings their M A N I A Tour to Orlando’s Amway Center with a revolutionary show that will inspire the band’s lifetime fans to embrace a new wave of sound. Fifteen years since the release of the Chicago-based emo group’s debut album, Take This to Your Grave, Fall Out Boy has taken up residence in the mainstream world as one of the decade’s most metamorphic bands, revealing the transformative capabilities that have brought them from playing grungy venues to headlining arenas alongside the kings and queens of pop. While some may believe that the quartet has sacrificed their edge in pursuit of popular relevance, Fall Out Boy’s latest album, M A N I A, proves that the band has harnessed their method of musical survival to become stadium rock icons and garner fans from a more conventional audience. Unlike the majority of bands that have sold out to secure the ever-fading glory of Top 40 heights, Fall Out Boy has managed to maintain their identity as a band—the cordial sense of togetherness in rock bands that has all but dissolved from 2018’s trendcentric music landscape. The four members have remained a tight-knit crew with a legacy to match, which has served as the key to their steadfast
grip on the emo kids of the past as well as their ability to attract postpunk listeners. While frontman Patrick Stump melodically admits on M A N I A, “All of my childhood heroes have fallen off or died,” there is an air of selfreflection in the surprisingly honest line. Although many of the group’s former fans have dismissed the band’s aspirations of change, it takes an entire album-worth of Stump’s confessions to embrace the belief that the Fall Out Boy lead singer has risen from the ashes with the band’s new direction. Filled with dance-beat heavy tunes reminiscent of 2013’s “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark,” and the following year’s “Centuries,” M A N I A’s single “Champion,” cowritten with pop star Sia, furthers Fall Out Boy’s transformation from the spokesmen of the skinny-jean emo scene to radio-ready hitmakers crafting universal arena anthems. The band began their genre revolution with 2009’s Folie a Deux, which continues to stand as their most diverse album with trackby-track idiosyncrasies and daring vulnerability. M A N I A works in a similar fashion, showcasing Fall Out Boy’s affinity for taking bold risks and experimenting with a variety of genres on the album’s selections.
While original fans of the four-piece might not find the sentence-long song titles that defined their earlier albums, M A N I A is full of Stump’s soaring vocals over intelligent wordplay and bassist Pete Wentz’s eccentric whim for coining brilliantly bizarre lyrics. But perhaps the crowning achievement of Fall Out Boy’s monumental career is their commitment to excellence in each live performance, from the early days to their 2018 tour. You won’t want to miss this amazing opportunity to see Fall Out Boy at what might in fact be their prime—a tour that encompasses the band’s maturing character and tells the story of their genre-conquering journey.
Fall Out Boy has taken up residence in the mainstream world as one of the decade’s most metamorphic bands, revealing the transformative capabilities that have brought them from playing grungy venues to headlining arenas alongside the kings and queens of pop.

CELEBRITY SOUP
CELEBRITY MOMS
WHO HAVE ADOPTED These women turned to adoption to help complete their families! By Riesa Pascal
Children come into our lives in many different ways, and Hollywood homes are no different! Here are just a few celebrity women who have found happiness through the adoption of children from all over the world.
MICHELLE PFEIFFER After a divorce at 35, newly single Michelle Pfeiffer decided she “wasn’t going to not have children because I wasn’t married” so naturally she decided to adopt. As luck would have it, Michelle met David E. Kelley, the future love of her life, just two months after applying to adopt her future daughter Claudia Rose. Fortunately David was equally in love and on board with the plan, even going so far as to adopt little Claudia Rose as his own.
SHERYL CROW Much like Michelle Pfeiffer, Sheryl Crow also went through the process of adopting as a single mother. The singer-songwriter adopted sons Wyatt and Levi in 2007 and 2010 respectively. She has no regrets and even shared some adoption advice in an interview saying, “There will never seem like a great time to do it—just like when you’re married, it never seems like the perfect time to have a baby...so you dive in and make your life work.”
ANGELINA JOLIE Perhaps one of the world’s most famous celebrity adopters is Angelina Jolie and her ex-husband Brad Pitt. Their clan of six includes three children they’ve adopted: Maddox from Cambodia, Zahara from Ethiopia, and Pax from Vietnam. Angelina spoke about the children in an interview saying, “They are all learning about each other’s cultures, as well as being proud of their own so it’s not like just the boys get to do the Asian thing. They all have their flags over their beds and their individual pride.”
VIOLA DAVIS In 2011, Viola Davis became a first-time mom to daughter Genesis whom she adopted with her husband Julian Tennon. In an interview

with People, Viola gushed about motherhood saying, “I feel like a star at home only because she loves me so much. I mean, it’s red carpet every day! It’s wonderful!” Viola has even found a future boyfriend for Genesis with her Extremely Loud costar Sandra Bullock‘s adopted son Louis. Viola spoke of the potential future suitor saying, “I’d absolutely love to set her up with Louis. That kid is so cute. He’s going to be a bruiser. But let’s try to get a playdate in first.”
MADONNA In 2005, Madonna was filming a documentary in Malawi when she decided to adopt her son David. The global star was warned that the country had no known adoption laws at the time so they were “more or less going to have to make them up as we went along.” After bringing her baby boy home, his father got back in the picture to try and reclaim him, but fortunately David was able to stay with his new forever family. Madonna has since also adopted Mercy, a Malawi girl, and last year she added four year old Malawi twins Stella and Esther Mwale to her growing brood.
KATHERINE HEIGL In 2009, Katherine Heigl and her husband Josh Kelley adopted a 10-month old girl from South Korea. Sadly for Katherine, Naleigh quickly bonded with her dad which left Katherine feeling rejected by her new daughter. Katherine spoke about her hurt in an interview saying, “I fought very hard to be accepted as a mom by my daughter...her rejection almost broke my heart.” Fortunately the feeling didn’t last for long. Soon after, Katherine and Josh adopted a second daughter, Adelaide, from within America and last year, Katherine became a mom of three after welcoming the birth of a son just before Christmas.

The right to self-defense including the use of deadly force has long been recognized in every state. The law traditionally required that before using deadly force, a person had to retreat. Florida changed the law to allow a person to stand his or her ground and use deadly force if the person reasonably believed that deadly force was necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself, herself, or another. In Florida, a person may use deadly force without retreating as long as the person is in a place where he or she has a right to be, such as a public street or in a business. For example, if a person enters a convenience store and sees the store clerk being robbed at gun point, deadly force can be used. If the individual walks out of the store and takes a pistol out of the locked glove box and reenters the store and shoots the armed robber, the shooting will fall under the Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law. There have been examples of this very scenario. The store clerk, likewise, could use deadly force when confronted by an armed robber. This does not mean, however, that deadly force can be used whenever that person believes that force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself. The law requires that the individual before using deadly force must reasonably believe that the deadly force was necessary to prevent death or great bodily harm. What is reasonable will later be determined by others. In reality, use of deadly force in selfdefense or defense of another is a serious matter which will result in a thorough investigation by law enforcement. If law enforcement and prosecuting attorneys believe that the use of force was not
reasonable, a person may be charged with murder or other serious crimes. Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law also contains a provision authorizing the use of deadly force when a person is legally in a residence or dwelling and has a reasonable fear of eminent death or great bodily harm. Florida’s law concerning home protection contains a provision that a person is presumed to have a reasonable fear of imminent peril of death or great bodily harm if confronted with a person who has unlawfully or forcibly entered the residence or dwelling. There are, however, exceptions to this law which can result in the self-defense claim to be rejected. The presumption that deadly force was appropriate does not apply if the person entering the residence had a right to be in the residence or was a lawful resident of the dwelling such as an owner or lessee. In addition, Florida does not allow deadly use of force against a police officer entering a dwelling in the performance of his or her duty. Force against a law enforcement officer entering a residence is not presumed to be reasonable if the individual entering was known or should have been known to be a law enforcement officer. Like many laws, this law has several exceptions. The Florida Stand Your Ground Law is intended to further the rights of people to protect themselves from death or great bodily harm and to protect others from death or great bodily harm. The use of deadly force, however, is a serious matter and can result in an arrest and conviction if police, prosecutors, and ultimately, a jury, determined that the use of force was not reasonable. The basic point to remember is do not use deadly force unless you reasonably believe your life or the life of another person is in danger.

IN THE KNOW
CROSSING BORDERS FOR LOVE As our world becomes more and more intertwined, the romantic metaphor of crossing the seven seas for your beloved becomes a reality. Cross-cultural marriages are becoming part of the norm. But which is better? Filing as a fiance or spouse? Let us explore both options. When Love is Abroad When a U.S. citizen marries abroad, he or she can return home to the U.S. and file a marriage petition from here. Once the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) confirms that the marriage is bona fide (not just to confer a green card on someone), the agency will approve the petition and then eventually forward it to the U.S. Consulate or Embassy in your spouse’s home country, where an interview will be set for the issuance of a visa. But what if your family insists on having your wedding here because having the entire family attend the wedding abroad would be cost prohibitive? The solution is the fiance petition! Instead of marrying abroad, you would file a petition as a fiance. You must have met your beloved at least one time within the last two years and once your fiance enters the U.S., he or she must marry you within 90 days. After marrying, your new spouse must file an adjustment-of-status application with the USCIS and possibly attend a “marriage interview” with you.
US Immigration Attorney Shahzad Ahmed with NeJame Law & Mark NeJame jointly contributed to this article
When Love is Nigh Most U.S. citizens meet their foreign life partners within our shorelines. Note that the fiance petition is not applicable when your fiance is in the United States. The first step would be to marry your life partner. Upon marriage, you can file your marriage petition with the USCIS. In most cases, the marriage petition should be accompanied by an adjustment-of-status
application. The USCIS will eventually set an interview to review two things: that the marriage is bona fide, and that your spouse is not ‘inadmissible’ to becoming a lawful permanent resident. (Yes, the Immigration and Nationality Act has several grounds of inadmissibility!) Once the USCIS approves the marriage petition and the adjustment of status application, your spouse will get a Resident Alien Card (green card) in the mail. If the marriage is less than two years old, the residency will be granted conditionally for two years. Near the end of the two year conditional period, the couple must file a joint petition to establish that they still reside together; or if the marriage is terminated, the applicant must show that there is a bona fide reason for no longer residing together. Love Can’t be Blind “My marriage is real! I don’t need an attorney!” If you are inclined to believe that, think again. Our discussion provides only an overview of the marriagebased immigration process. There are many intricacies involved that are not discussed here. For every person who is able to handle the process successfully, there is one who couldn’t. The lesson: While falling in love, avoid getting hurt. Whether marrying a foreigner abroad or in the U.S., knowing your options and being prepared are the keys. It can avoid unnecessary delays. Therefore, be sure to consult with an experienced immigration attorney before starting your new life with your beloved.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW
HOW DO I FIND A LAWYER? Florida has more than 85,000 licensed lawyers practicing in the state. How do you know which one is right for you? First, make sure the person you are
considering hiring is an attorney. You can do this by going to The Florida Bar website at www.floridabar.org. If you have questions, call membership records at The Florida Bar at 850-561-5832. If you believe the person is not an attorney but is claiming to be one, call The Florida Bar Unlicensed Practice of Law Department at 850-561-5840. Make a careful search for your lawyer; it’s an important decision. Your goal should be to find a lawyer you are comfortable with as a person and as a professional. Many legal matters involve personal considerations, and your lawyer often will need to know confidential information about you, your family and your finances to be truly effective in serving you. In your preliminary research, you should focus on compiling a list of the names of lawyers who may be qualified to handle your case. Your ‘follow-up’ research will include making phone calls to those lawyers’ offices then visiting one or a few to find the attorney you want to handle your case. To begin, consider a lawyer’s reputation. Have you heard people speak highly of a particular attorney’s talents or work? Think about your acquaintances who are, or may know, lawyers. Ask those who work with attorneys in their profession, or someone whose opinion you respect — an employer, lawyer at your workplace, banker, teacher, minister, doctor or other professional, relative, neighbor or friend. The best recommendations often come from people who hired a lawyer to successfully resolve a problem similar to yours.
Another check you can do is to see if the attorney has a discipline history — meaning the person has received a professional discipline for violating the Rules Regulating The Florida Bar. You can find out this information by going to the attorney’s profile page on The Florida Bar website. Once the attorney’s page appears, scroll down until you see the words: ‘10-Year Discipline History.’ If there is no discipline, the word ‘None’ will appear to the right of the name. If there is a history, the word ‘Yes’ will appear, with a link to documents regarding the discipline. You can use that information to ask the attorney about this episode. You also may call 866-352-0707 and follow the prompts to check a lawyer’s discipline history. A new and growing development in Florida and other states is the prepaid legal services plan. Through a prepaid legal program, an individual or group pays a premium, something like health insurance, to receive such services as free consultations and advice, with prescribed fees for follow-up services. Before hiring an attorney or before you even think you might need one, you should check to see if your employer, union or other organization of which you are a member offers a prepaid legal service plan as a benefit. Most areas in Florida also have legal aid and public defender offices, which provide legal help without cost or at a nominal fee to people who cannot afford to pay a lawyer. Legal aid offices provide advice in some non-criminal cases such as those relating to small money claims for wages; disputes between borrowers and lenders; landlord-tenant problems; and domestic relations matters. Public defender offices handle criminal cases for indigent people.
A potential client also can use regional, state or national directories of lawyers and law firms, some containing detailed biographical information and client listings. These volumes — some specially produced for consumer education, and others used by lawyers to identify attorneys in other localities — often can be found in public libraries. Lists of recommended attorneys are also circulated within special interest groups. Aside from this information, some lawyers are now using consumer advertising on radio, television, newspapers, magazines, in other media and on the web to inform the public of their services and charges for certain routine legal matters.
Comment: Orlando Style Magazine has received lawyer recommendations from many peers and our readers. The results are presented in the following list and in addition, several professionals have taken the opportunity to present their experiences and profiles to you in the following special feature.

JOHN ELLIOTT LEIGHTON
The go-to lawyer for serious injury cases
Catastrophic Injuries. Medical Malpractice. Wrongful Death
Aggressive. Thorough. Accomplished. Creative. Determined. Ethical. Respected. These are some of the words often used to describe serious injury attorney John Leighton. Leighton is unlike most lawyers. He doesn’t seek out cases; they seek him out. For over 30 years he has represented people who have been seriously injured and families of those killed by negligence. But his cases don’t usually come from the public. They come from other lawyers. That’s because Leighton is referred the serious, complex and catastrophic cases from around the state and elsewhere in the country. He is seen as the go-to trial lawyer for major personal injury and death cases like medical malpractice, catastrophic trucking and car crash, resort/ hotel/theme park, violent crime/negligent security, traumatic brain injury and defective product cases. His cases are almost always referred by lawyers from Florida and around the world. Mr. Leighton fought for passage of the first parasailing safety law in the United States after his client’s daughter was killed while parasailing off Florida’s coast. It took seven years but the regulations finally passed in 2014. Known for his success in medical malpractice cases, Leighton’s track record in obtaining recoveries in Central Florida is remarkable. He won a record-setting $24.1 million verdict for a child who suffered a terrible medical mistake
in Seminole County. Then he obtained $9 million for a woman who was given improper anesthesia in the hospital, and $3 million for the Central Florida family whose mom bled to death from a doctor’s error. He followed that with a $24.3 million verdict for the family of an Orlando police officer who was killed at an ATM, won an $8 million award for the parents of a teenage girl killed on the turnpike, and recently recovered a $7.4 million verdict in Osceola County for a trucking crash. This past year he obtained a $49 million verdict for a girl who had been raped by a teacher. These are examples of why Leighton has developed a national reputation and has been hired to handle cases in nearly a dozen states. While many of his cases garner media attention, most of the time Leighton’s clients are ordinary people who have suffered serious loss. Like the Orlando family of a teen who was killed by a drunk boater. That family hired Leighton, who obtained a $1.35 million recovery and saw the boater sent to prison for 6 years. And like the $3.5 million recovery he won for an Orlando motorcyclist who suffered a brain injury where the driver who hit him only had $10,000 in insurance. A board certified trial lawyer, Leighton is considered one of the foremost experts in negligent security litigation (people injured from a criminal assault) and child sex abuse. He wrote the 2-volume textbook, Litigating Premises Security Cases, lectures around the world, and was recently re-elected Chairman
of the Inadequate Security Litigation Group of the American Trial Lawyers, where he was previously Chairman of its Motor Vehicle, Highway and Premises Liability Section. As part of his commitment to give back to the legal community, Leighton has taught lawyers in over a dozen states and two other countries. Recently he was on the faculty at Harvard Law School to teach ATLA’s Ultimate Trial Advocacy Course. Leighton is recognized by his peers as being at the very top of this his field. For 10 years he has been chosen as one of the Top 100 by Florida SuperLawyers, Florida Trend magazine’s “Florida Legal Elite,” and selected 13 consecutive years for The Best Lawyers in America for Plaintiff ’s personal injury, medical malpractice and product liability litigation. Mr. Leighton loves helping people who have had terrible things happen to them, and seeks justice for his clients in the courts.

AVITA M. SAMAROO
Samaroo Law, P.A. - A Fresh Perspective If she is not passionately advocating for her clients, you will probably find Avita Samaroo volunteering with her family or strolling the local art galleries of Central Florida. After just one meeting with Avita, it’s clear to see that she exudes creativity and passion. It’s those same qualities that she has taken with her to Samaroo Law. Attorney Samaroo recently left a coveted position at a wellknown law firm and founded Samaroo Law with a simple premise in mind - each case is unique and each client deserves to have their story heard.
“What distinguishes a really great personal injury attorney is creativity. We are essentially storytellers; we have to be able to tell our clients’ stories in a way that the other side can make sense of.” Attorney Samaroo explains that the best way to handle a personal injury case is to treat it like it’s going to trial from day one. And while most cases do not go to trial, that sort of trial-mindedness often yields better results at the settlement table. In addition to her legal degree, Attorney Samaroo has also earned a degree in Fine Arts and an MBA in Marketing Management. Her
diverse educational background has been the catalyst to her unique ability to think outside-the-box and unwind complex legal issues with creativity. Attorney Samaroo is not just a highachieving working woman and wellrespected attorney, she is also a wife and mother of two. The New York born daughter of a United States Air Force Captain, grew up in Central Florida and is now raising her own family here. “Over the past thirty years, I’ve seen this community develop from vast orange groves to the metropolis that it is today. With this type of growth comes a lot of responsibility.” Attorney Samaroo takes her role as a community leader seriously. She and her husband, Mahendra, are actively involved with several local charities and they instill those same values in their children. Her eyes lit up when she told me a story about her family. Last holiday season, Samaroo and her husband tasked their eight and ten year old with the project of finding someone that needed something and giving it to them. She was impressed when her children choose a local homeless man known as Snoop. They had just learned that Snoop was evicted from his home and living on the street. “One of my proudest moments as a mother was when my children told me that they were going to buy Snoop a house.” While they weren’t able to buy Snoop a house, the family provided food and shelter for him for several weeks. They worked
together and found Snoop a steady job and a home that he could afford to call his own. The Samaroo family’s commitment to making a difference in the community and they way they go about it about it is inspiring to say the least. Despite her professional and personal achievements, Attorney Samaroo is surprisingly humble in nature. “Though I have accomplished much in my life, I see every day as opportunity for more – to learn more, to achieve more, to contribute more.” Avita Samaroo’s values of persistence and determination echo through everything she does weather it be work related or personal. She has maintained an exceptional reputation for client focused professional service and is taking that philosophy to new heights at Samaroo Law.

JANE E. CAREY Law Office of Jane E. Carey, P.A.
The great-granddaughter of slaves, Jane Carey recognizes that both her life story and her practice are unusual. But the result has been a persistent, passionate, smart and honest advocate for her clients. With deep roots in northern Florida and raised by a single mother working two jobs, Mrs. Carey had a hard work ethic instilled into her early on in life. After a full day in the classroom, Jane’s mother, Mary Carey, led three hours of night school, teaching typing to high school students. Jane, who was in elementary school at the time, sat in the back of the room, soaking up her mother’s instruction. By the end of her third-grade year, she was a competent typist. Mary well understood that her responsibility to her children meant more than providing food and shelter. It also meant making sure they were well educated, infused with a strong work ethic, and buoyed by an abiding sense of faith. Jane grew up believing in selfsufficiency, coupled with a service to others. Propelled by her resolute mother and nurturing maternal grandfather, Pasco Gainer, Sr., Jane attended Fisk University in Nashville Tennessee, eventually graduating and securing a scholarship at the University of Florida College of Law. From the onset of her career, Carey had a passion for being an advocate for children. Attorney Carey was admitted to The Florida Bar in 1983 and became the first black woman to ever work for the Orange County Public Defender. Inspired by her grandfather’s entrepreneurial spirit, Attorney Carey opened the doors to her own private practice in 1984. In 1985 she joined forces with her husband, the late Harry Morall II, to address the deficit of accessible legal care and founded Morall & Carey. The duo served the Central Florida community for over 20 years, while also raising two wonderful children together, Harry III and Mary Elizabeth. Now in solo practice, Attorney Carey has continued to be an advocate for families and children by ensuring that even the smallest voices are heard. As a veteran attorney in Central Florida, Jane has focused on family and probate law - “cradle to the grave” - as she puts it. The pain of her father’s abandonment and her mother’s subsequent struggles fuel her commitment to securing justice for children and their caregivers.
Over the decades her cases have made national headlines. Jane famously represented the mother of a teenage boy seeking independence from his parents. “Gregory K” won emancipation initially, but after years of fighting, an appellate court agreed with Jane that a child could not decide who his or her parents should be. Another one of Jane’s cases, Finley v. Scott, helped reset child support guidelines for wealthy parents. In Finley, Jane represented the mother of a wealthy athlete’s child who, she successfully argued, deserved to share in her father’s “good fortune.” Jane Carey has been able to sustain her practice for over 30 years with little to no advertising. Simply a solid reputation and word of mouth has kept her doors open. She is dedicated to every client like they are family, and that’s warm and welcoming attitude keeps her clients coming back and recommending others to her services. She has been a local servant of this community and a guiding hand for younger lawyers trying to navigate the industry.

Morgan & Morgan Once a Marine, Always a Marine. It was his service in the United States Marine Corps (1996-2004) that drove Jack T. Cook, Esq. to pursue a career in law as the opportunity to serve his country abroad ignited a desire to dedicate his life to the protection of the weak against the powerful. Today, Mr. Cook devotes his practice solely to seeking justice on behalf of citizens who have been injured or killed due to medical negligence, including surgical errors, birth-related injuries, medication errors, caretaker neglect, and misdiagnosis of lifethreatening conditions such as stroke, cancer, heart attack, infection, and blood clots. In February 2018, Mr. Cook proudly joined Morgan & Morgan, the largest consumer protection law firm in the United States, and a firm that embodies the core ideals which make up the foundation of his practice: honor, integrity, perseverance, professionalism and a devotion to the people. “Medical errors are now the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of medical malpractice goes unreported. Most doctors, nurses, hospitals and medical facilities do remarkable and lifesaving work on a daily basis, and always adhere to the standards of practice learned through their education, training and experience. However, there are healthcare providers who ignore these standards, take shortcuts, ignore patient complaints, and make decisions that are unreasonable. Unfortunately, the result of this negligent care and treatment is very often catastrophic injury or death” - Jack T. Cook, Esq.

Mr. Cook has been recognized and honored by Martindale Hubbell with an AV-Preeminent Rating. For over 100 years, Martindale Hubbell has recognized lawyers for their strong legal ability and high ethical standards, and is considered the “gold standard” in attorney ratings are they are based almost entirely on peer and client review. Mr. Cook has also been certified as a member of the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum, an organization which is recognized as one of the most prestigious groups of trial lawyers in the United States. After finishing middle school and graduating high school in Broward County, he moved to Central Florida to attend the University of Central Florida. Upon graduating from UCF, Brandon left Central Florida to attend law school in Chicago at Loyola University Chicago’s School of law. During law school, he competed with the school’s Trial Team, developed and refined essential trial techniques and skills, and mentored underneath several of the Chicago area’s established and successful trial attorneys, who shared with and taught him both the art and science of cross examination. After finishing law school and becoming a member of the Florida Bar, Brandon joined the Orange County State Attorney’s Office as an Assistant State Attorney. At the State Attorney’s Office, he prosecuted criminal defendants, enforced criminal laws, and advocated on behalf of the State of Florida, as well as the victims of criminal misconduct. As a prosecutor, Brandon also independently prosecuted a high-volume felony caseload from intake to disposition, prepared numerous motions, delivered arguments in various types of circuit court hearings, conducted the depositions of both state and defense witnesses, and performed all phases of the trial process from jury selection to closing arguments.
Brandon currently works as an associate attorney at The Fighter Law Firm in downtown Orlando. At the office, he handles a variety of cases involving criminal, appellate, and domestic relation matters. He also engages in civil litigation on behalf of medical professionals in the local community. Brandon is presently looking forward to his first oral argument before the Fifth District Court of Appeal in October, on an appeal he made on behalf of a man convicted of felony murder. In his first two years as a private defense attorney, Brandon has been adept at quickly identifying issues with law enforcement’s case and the State’s evidence. Issues he uses to leverage the State of Florida into not filing criminal charges on unlawful arrests, dismissing poorly charged cases, or negotiating fair and just resolutions based on law enforcement’s investigation, the State’s evidence, and a client’s potential exposure at trial.

In his first two years as a prosecutor, Brandon tried over 30 jury and non-jury trials to verdict as lead counsel. Before leaving the Orange County State Attorney’s Office, he was promoted through five levels of prosecution, including county court misdemeanor, entry level circuit court felony, the juvenile bureau, the DUI unit, and the Drug Unit. Brandon attributes his success as a prosecutor to using both his life experience and trial practice skills, to effectively prosecute and successfully try numerous cases in front of juries, including DUI, Home Invasion Robbery, and Murder.

Upon earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Chris enrolled in the University of Florida Levin College of Law and earned his Juris Doctorate. Following his graduation from law school and passing the Florida Bar, Chris accepted a position at the Office of the Public Defender in Orlando, Florida. While there, Chris handled thousands of misdemeanor and felony cases, quickly developing a reputation for being an aggressive trial lawyer and was promoted to the felony division in less than a year. During his time at the Public Defender’s Office, Chris had the opportunity to handle virtually every type of crime. After his tenure as an Assistant Public Defender, Chris worked at a boutique Central Florida law firm where he gained valuable experience in the private sector and dealing with complex cases throughout the State of Florida. After being there for almost 2 years, Chris opened The Kaigle Law Firm, P.A. right here in his hometown of Orlando. Since the founding of his firm, Chris has continued to aggressively represent those accused of crimes in both misdemeanor and felony court, especially those accused of Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and other driving related offenses. Additionally, Chris has represented many people under investigation and indictment from State and Federal authorities as well as college students in both their alleged criminal and student conduct violations. Chris is often asked: what makes him different from the other lawyers in the area defending those accused of a DUI? Unlike many attorneys, Chris is not afraid to go to trial as he has tried numerous felony and misdemeanor DUI jury trials in his career. This lack of fear gives his clients a battle-tested edge over many others. For sure, Chris’ dedication, trial experience, and no-nonsense attitude make him a true advocate in defending his clients. For his hard-work, Chris has been awarded the designation of a Super Lawyer for the past 3 years, a designation given through a selective peer evaluation process to only 2.5% of lawyers in the State of Florida. In addition, Chris received the Client Satisfaction Award for DUI Cases by the American Institute of DUI Attorneys in 2016, and his firm was designated one of the 10 Best Law Firms by the American Institute of Criminal Law Attorneys for 2016-2017. OLIVIA T. KRONENBERG
ORLANDO’S
SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW
Paul Knopf Bigger A passion for medicine led Olivia Kronenberg to pursue a career as a medical malpractice trial attorney, representing patients and their families. “I have a deep respect for the medical field,” she says. With a father, grandmother, and sister who are all physicians, medicine is what she grew up talking about around the dinner table. She believes that the same qualities that make a great doctor also make a great attorney: listening to others, being a flexible teammate, having an insatiable appetite for information, dropping the ego, and genuinely caring about the people you serve. Olivia is known among her peers for her tenacity, compassion, and intense attention to detail. Something that excites her is identifying what she refers to as “system errors” in her cases: “A system error is a problem with a process— for example, in discharging patients, entering orders, or delivering important messages. If a process is set up in a dangerous way, that has the potential to harm many, many, patients— not just the patient who was hurt or killed in my case.” She hopes that by exposing these issues, hospitals can have an opportunity to improve and make care safer. In addition to medical malpractice cases, Olivia also has a passion for cases involving vulnerable adults and children. “Inadequate staffing and staff training can pose a significant risk at schools and group homes, particularly for those who can’t speak up for themselves.” Olivia has represented children who have been sexually assaulted by other students during school hours, as well as intellectually disabled adults who have been abused and neglected in group home settings. Olivia practices with Paul Knopf Bigger in Winter Park. “I am so lucky to have such a supportive and passionate team behind me,” she says. Because injured patients and consumers can rarely afford to take on the hospitals, insurance companies, or corporations on the other side, it is not uncommon that law firms representing injured parties advance all of the costs of the litigation. PKB takes on some of the most financially demanding cases on behalf of patients and consumers, including medical malpractice, dangerous products, and even fighting Big Tobacco. Prior to PKB, Olivia practiced at Paul & Perkins and at the McMillen Law Firm, where she primarily handled medical malpractice cases. When she’s not working late hours, Olivia enjoys spending time with her family and rescue dog, a one-eyed toothless Pekingese named Delia.

If you’re looking for a trustworthy and compassionate family & marital law attorney, look no further than Rebecca L. Palmer. With almost 25 years of practicing family law, Rebecca has been the go-to resource for individuals looking for sound legal advice and representation for their complex family law cases. Clients continually rave about her grace and empathy when working with her and consistently reach out to her for not only guidance through their tough family law issues but for consoling and understanding. When first starting her legal career, Rebecca was drawn to the courtroom and represented her clients with tough litigating tactics. But through the years, Rebecca has seen the importance of collaboration and getting to the table with strategies to alleviate time and money before getting to the courtroom. Negotiation methods that involve diligence and thoughtfulness are what make Rebecca a leader in her industry. Colleagues invariably refer clients to Rebecca due to her alternative dispute resolution and collaborative law techniques that she has mastered through her family law journey. Jim West, MA, LMHC, NCC and President of Total Life Counseling has said, “Rebecca has helped many of our clients and she really cares about the family and tries to handle divorce while attempting to minimize impact on the children involved!” It’s comments such as these are why Rebecca is the first call when individuals are looking for family law representation. Along with being awarded by her peers “Orlando Best Lawyer” as well as rated as a “Super Lawyer” for family law, Rebecca is also a certified mediator for the state of Florida and has developed a true passion for mediation. The ability to bring all parties to the table to potentially resolve issues in a family law case in, sometimes, one day, are rewarding to Rebecca and continually justify her position as an experienced and honorable mediator. Rebecca also loves her community. She has been President of the Central Florida Association of Women, the President of the Orlando Young Professionals, an adjunct professor in the areas of Legal Ethics, Business Law, Trial Techniques and Family Law at Stetson University, Barry University, Southern College, and the University of Central Florida. Palmer also taught for several years at Emory University for the trial advocacy program. LARRY M. ROTH
ORLANDO’S
SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW
A Mediator For All Sides With Litigation Experience Q: Is that a book you wrote? Yes, it’s my book I am holding in the picture. The title is “A Lawyer in Pinstripes.” It has just been published. There are legal stories in it, but mostly it is about me, as an advanced aged baseball fan, getting a chance to become, despite the demands of my law practice, a New York Yankee, by the magic of their Fantasy Camp program. The book is part fiction and non-fiction. The book will make you laugh over my trying to get into baseball shape after 50 years, will make you nostalgic for your childhood when I recount my Little League experiences and how I first came to love baseball, and might make you tear up to certain things that happen as one’s life rolls on over the years. In my opinion, those are all good emotions to have, especially if a written piece of literature can move you to experience those emotions. Q: What are you working on at the present time? I am concentrating on what we in the legal profession call “ADR.” This means “Alternative Dispute Resolution” which is a way to get legal disputes resolved without having to go to court. I am available for mediations, arbitrations, and a not frequently used concept in the legal community of “Voluntary Trial Resolution” which involves serving as a private judge if the parties agree. ADR is designed to resolve legal disputes quickly and inexpensively.
Over my 40 plus year career I have concentrated on being a trial lawyer, mostly doing products liability law. I represented motor vehicle manufacturers when sued by someone injured usually in car crashes, but also from operating motorcycles, and water craft products. I am still doing this work, but now only for one product manufacturer. In my time as a trial lawyer I have represented nearly every motor vehicle manufacturer---Nissan, Mazda, Subaru, GM, Ford, Kia, Honda, Hyundai, Fiat, BMW, Lotus, Isuzu, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha, VW, Volvo, and Porsche. I even represented Rolls Royce once. Q: What advice would you give today’s young lawyers? It’s a tough profession. Sometimes it’s a hard way to make a living. But you need to keep a balanced life throughout. Lawyers are often told in 5 or 10 or 15 years they will figure out what it’s all about – that is being an attorney. Actually, I think that every day, no matter how long you have practiced as a lawyer, you learn and do something new. As for me, you can see, I just wrote a book.

I like winning and I’m good at it. Being in the courtroom fighting for my clients brings me a lot of pleasure. Not many people hire a trial attorney to “do their best;” they hire them to win. “Top-shelf live jazz and blues — nightly — set the tone for the Vines Grille & Wine Bar experience, creating atmosphere that speaks to romance, relaxation, sophistication and, if you take advantage of the stellar wine selection a modicum of inebriation. Live music starts every night at seven, marking the end of happy hour and the beginning of the dinner hour (Vines is also an upscale dining venue and wine shop). Let staffers steer you toward the perfect drink selection. Music plays in the bar, but an open layout lets everyone enjoy the vibe, whether the band is playing hot or cool.” USA TODAY - 10 BEST

BON APPETIT
The Glass Knife is a pastry box of an eatery, its pink-and-black exterior whimsy inviting you to step inside and taste the wonder of what a café experience can be. That’s the desire of owner Steve Brown, who designed Winter Park’s most decadent dessert locale with the purpose of celebrating edible elegance—and reminding guests that they deserve to enjoy it. A stroll into the Glass Knife whisks you away to an idyllic European escape—wait staff sharply donned in black aprons, Italian bakery cases staging a parade of fanciful treats, a collection of cozy booths where couples linger over a glass of wine or split a made-from-scratch brioche donut. Yet, like a dreamy diner that exists to reinvent the past, the restaurant exudes an aura that is authentically American, with a stunning cake tower and a lengthy walnut table at the center, harkening back to the kitchen of Brown’s childhood home.
Guests can even observe the imaginative process of the Glass Knife’s pastry chefs in the windowed cake room, filling the restaurant with creative and kinetic energy, bringing the room to life. Growing up watching his mother make cakes, Brown considered this cake room an aspect of the Glass Knife that was a necessity. “Pastry is an art form, and I want to bring that to the front,” Brown explains with a smile. “We’re trying to over time let people realize that all the way down to the root, we think about things.” The Glass Knife is much more than cake and coffee—with a scrumptious and savory day menu, the café is the perfect spot for a sophisticated breakfast or lunch, or even a romantic dinner for two. Start your day with the Glass Knife’s Matcha Latte, the not-too-sweet matcha green tea drink that has been long-awaited for green tea connoisseurs, originating with the café’s very own matcha mix and delightfully steamed milk.
The Glass Knife was created with this exact kitchen in mind, and more importantly, the woman who made that kitchen the showroom for her culinary masterpieces—Brown’s mother, whose cake recipes and knife collection have inspired the floor-to-ceiling thoughtfulness of the café.
THE GLASS KNIFE IS MUCH MORE THAN CAKE & COFFEE
“My mom collected glass knives,” Brown shares. “She collected depression glass, plates and cups, and along the way in the quest to find those actual depression glass pieces, she would find a knife here and there.” Glancing at the beautiful, colored glass knives backlit in a display within the wooden table, he adds, “This is a part of her collection.”
For lunch, the signature house-made Chicken Pot Pie tastes like an updated version of a comfort classic—a flaky cheddar biscuit crust tops a heartwarming combination of tender roasted chicken breast, spring peas, rainbow potatoes, carrots, and Spanish onions in an aromatic cream.
His mother’s array of depression glass sets the foundation of Brown’s café, not only as its namesake, but in a literal sense—the Glass Knife’s terrazzo floors showcase shards of the famed glass collection and echo the pastel tones and starburst design on the charming knives. With the knives and the old-fashioned cakes they once sliced as the motivation for Brown’s café, he and his stellar team have worked tirelessly to perfect the art of preparing homemade staples—timeless recipes from his mom’s kitchen—in a way that intrigues and satisfies the Glass Knife’s modern clientele. “The chef has to [create] something that’s made with butter and real eggs that’s still just as good tomorrow as it is today,” Brown says. “That’s our goal. We’re trying to stay as pure to that as we possibly can.”
breathtaking designs of every item on the menu. At the Glass Knife, the star of the hour is definitely the cake, especially the Carrot Cake. Between layers of pleasantly-spiced carrot cake, homemade pineapple jam provides just enough sweetness to this twist on a classic, which is completed with a paper-thin layer of buttercream icing and precious sugary flowers, as well as a dash of 23-karat gold flakes. All of the cakes in the tower have an element of gold, unifying the flavors and picking up on the gold in the aesthetic of the place—from the gold trim of the bakery cases to the shining light fixtures. With his updated take on traditional eats in a European café-inspired setting, Brown hopes to teach his guests about the potential of an enjoyable dining experience. “We’ve kind of done things a little different, which has taken a little educating of the market,” he states. “We don’t present checks. We do if someone asks. We’re here to provide you with a place you can relax. You can sit here as long as you want, you can order more, you can get your dessert later… stay there for hours, there’s no rush.” With Brown’s restaurant philosophy defining the purpose of the Glass Knife, customers are learning to linger in the moment with each cup of coffee, each slice of cake, and each exquisite breath as they partake in the beauty of café life. The Glass Knife 276 S Orlando Ave. Winter Park, FL 32789 407-500-CAKE
The Glass Knife’s number-one selling item in the bakery case is the chocolate big wheel— moist chocolate cake filled with a marshmallow crème and hand-dipped in chocolate, finished with a touch of gold. Coffee lovers will swoon over the Chocolate Onyx. Chocolate mousse surrounds a salted caramel center infused with Onyx coffee, perched atop a chocolate biscuit. This divine recipe is a revelatory experience all its own— redefining what you know to be the textures and tastes of a chocolate-and-coffee match made in dessert heaven. While some pastry shops specialize in treats that look brilliant but lack in flavor, Brown takes the opposite approach. “They’ve got to taste better than they look. They all taste better than they look.” Brown couldn’t be more on point—even with the high standard set with the

Recently, we’ve been seeing the United States take on the refreshing Italian tradition, the Aperol spritz, just in time to make it your fall favorite cocktail. The famous Italian apéritif has sparked a growing interest here with its attractive coral color and just the right amount of a bitter-sweet orange taste. This easy to assemble, bubbly cocktail has the perfect potion to spice up the season.
The Moscow mule is something a little more familiar that rings in autumn with a classic musky feel. Vodka, lime, and a spicy ginger savor from the beer creates a flavor perfect for the season. Paired with a copper-toned glass, the Moscow mule will ensure an autumn aesthetic that welcomes cooler temperatures.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT! By Riesa Pascal
The release of our Summer Double Issue every July means we always have not one, but TWO jam packed months of exciting events to talk about in our September issue! Here are all the highlights, just in case you missed it! Held at Cranes Roost Park in Altamonte, Red Hot & Boom is an annual Independence Day celebration like no other! This year’s festivities took place on July 3rd and featured live entertainment by XL106.7. Thousands packed the park for to honor the country’s birthday with an unforgettable night of great performances, mouthwatering eats and 25 minutes of beautifully synchronized fireworks Hopefully guests didn’t party too hard at Red, White & Boom because the Watermelon 5K took place bright and early the following morning! The Independence Day event consisted of a 5K around Park Avenue at Winter Park. The run was immediately followed by a watermelon eating contest and all event proceeds benefited the Track Shack Foundation, a local, 501c(3) organization that promotes health and fitness with an emphasis on youth programs. Each Saturday afternoon during the month of July, Lakeridge Winery held its famous Summer Music Series, featuring live bands on the outdoor stage and solo acts at their Wine & Cheese Bar upstairs in the winery. The free event featured fantastic performers who were all hand-picked from the wealth of musical talent located throughout Central Florida. As always, Lakeridge wine, beer, soft drinks and a variety of food were available for purchase, along with complimentary Winery tours and tasting. 110
