PEOPLE

Orlando, Florida resident Matthew Christensen maintains a constant 4.0 GPA despite having missed more than what would be considered a typical amount of school for a high school student. Unfortunately absences and a busy travel schedule are simply unavoidable when you’re on the short list of racing drivers expected to win the United States F4 Championships. For my non-racing enthusiast readers, please allow me to write that in a different way just in case you missed the immense significance of what I just said. This unassuming high school sophomore only just made the transition from go-karts to car racing last year when he entered the acclaimed Lucas Oil Race Series for the first time. During the 18-race series, Matt was able to achieve 6 wins and 12 podiums despite being a new car racing driver and the youngest driver in the entire series. Now he is racing for Jay Howard Driver Development in the United States F4 Championship. Needless to say, Matt is not exactly your average 16-year-old though you wouldn’t know it in the first few minutes of a conversation with him. The humble teen was seemingly shy and slow to boast of his racing successes, but the longer I chatted with him and learned of his many achievements, the more I began to realize that I was talking to the real deal. “When I was little I always loved car racing. I always played with my Hot Wheels and would watch NASCAR and the movie ‘Cars’ nonstop. Then my neighbor started going go-karting and he invited us out to the track to try it out. The second I tried it, I fell in love.” -M.C. Matt’s career in racing began behind a go-kart at the tender age of nine where he quickly developed a life-changing passion for the high-speed sport. Over the years, Matt won numerous local and regional go-kart championships, even placing in the Top 10 on a national level. However, even though Matt was becoming a household name in the go-karting industry, his heart was calling him to a different racing track all together which is why the switch to cars took place last year. If we’re questioning whether he made the right decision, I think it’s safe to say that his car racing track record speaks for itself. His transition and subsequent ascend up the ranks was just as quick and effortless as the skillful way with which he drives his cars and that’s no coincidence. “There are no distractions or stress for me when I am behind the wheel. It feels comfortable and natural. I feel like I am one with the car.” -M.C. Though very much still considered a rookie in the field, Matt has proven himself to be a more

than worthy opponent to all who would dare question his youth or inexperience in car racing. In his first ever F4 race, Matt achieved 3rd place overall at race one in Homestead Florida and 1st place overall at round two at Sebring International Raceway for the F4 Winter Series. This impressive accomplishment deserves the utmost praise and recognition especially when you consider the fact that many of these drivers have been competing in the F4 series for 2-3 years.

For inquiries about sponsorship or investment, please contact the number listed below: Chris Christensen (father) chris@thechristensenteam.com Tel: 407-312-8003 www.mattchristensenracing.com

“My goal is to go on the road to Indy and race Indy cars, but this year I’m doing F4 and if you win that championship you get a scholarship to go to FR. If you win that, you get a scholarship to race in Japan and possibly go to F1 which is obviously the dream.” -M.C. The juxtaposition between Matt’s soft-spoken voice and the roaring intensity of his beloved racing cars stayed with me for long after our conversation. In spite of his solemn demeanor, the skill and passion he held for his craft was palpable in every single word. Throughout our conversation, he spoke often about his desire to be an IndyCar driver. Fortunately for Matt, there’s only one thing standing in the way of that dream becoming a reality and it’s not a lack of God-given talent, courageous drive or bold ambition. It is quite simply the need for help from supporters and sponsors like you and me. From entry and registration fees to engine leases and more, the ever increasing cost of a racing season goes well into figures that are impossible for a driver to cover on their own without early career assistance. “Matt has been trying really hard to reach out to local businesses in Orlando in trying to get sponsors and also people who might be interested in investing. If you don’t have the money to compete, then unfortunately you are not going to have the opportunity to go anywhere or do anything with your racing career. I’m just so super proud of him and I can’t even believe all that he’s accomplished in his career.” - Chris Christensen, Father Matt and his team are currently seeking out all types of donations and sponsors from the individual willing to purchase new tires to companies interested in being featured on the car to shareholding investors and everything in between. His hard work has brought him so far at such a young age and I hope the thought of not seeing that work come to fruition brings as much disappointment to you and it does to me. This quiet, but confident young man has proven time and time again that he has what it takes to win the F4 Championships, qualify for the NTT IndyCar Series and make the city of Orlando proud. Will you be in the driver’s seat with him?

hile hotelier Harris Rosen is known primarily as the owner and operator of Rosen Hotels & Resorts in Orlando, this doesn’t preclude the creative and curious entrepreneur from dipping his toe into the waters of various other ventures that pique his interest. Or that fulfill a bonafide need. This includes his self-funded RosenCare healthcare plan, created by Rosen and his team in 1991, resulting in savings to date of $460 million on behalf of his company. He also owns a commercial laundry facility that serves his hotels, with the ability to serve many others in the region. His newest venture, the Rosen Aquatic & Fitness Center (RAFC), recently opened on International Drive. As an avid daily swimmer and former master’s swimming champion, his interest is genuine. As a facility proven to be integral to the success of Central Florida’s meetings and tourism industry, the need to be open is imperative.

levels from around the world come to enhance their aquatic abilities,” said Rosen.

In the true spirit of The Harris Rosen Foundation, which owns and operates the facility as a 501 (c) (3), the RAFC is dedicated to elevating the quality of life of its members and visitors both locally and from throughout the world. “Ultimately, our goal is to be an inspiring fitness center to support the community and visitors with their wellness goals, while continuing to be a world-class facility where athletes of all ages and

“Mr. Rosen and the Rosen Aquatic Center have been such steadfast supporters of Special Olympic Athletes over the years,” said Joe Dzaluk, President & CEO, 2022 Special Olympics USA Games. “It is an honor to host the 2022 USA Games swimming competitions in such a prestigious facility. We will welcome over 300 swimmers from 48 US state programs, Aruba, Jamaica and the Bahamas. We are thrilled that they will be competing in such a special venue.”

The RAFC will host more than 50 aquatic competitions annually as one of the Southeast’s largest international swim facilities. For locals, it is also a world-class workout venue available for monthly and annual memberships (that includes discounts for hospitality industry employees) to use the swimming facilities and The Adam Michael Rosen Fitness Center. Plus, those in town for a meeting or vacation can become transient members with special passes ranging from $5 for a two-hour pass to $30 for a weekly pass. Recent meets include the prestigious National Club Swimming Association (NCSA) National Championships, while the facility has been tapped to host the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games, being held June 5-12, 2022.

Portions of the facility also can be booked for private events like birthday parties, corporate wellness and special swim events. The Rosen Hotels’ catering team is available to showcase its culinary prowess with healthy and inventive menus. A New Era in Orlando Fitness & Aquatics

Rosen was gifted the former Rosen YMCA Aquatic Center -- now the RAFC -- from the YMCA of Central Florida last October, preserving it from permanent closure due to the recent pandemic. The community, charities and local to international competitive aquatic teams and individuals had come to rely on the 35-year-old facility on International Drive. While the transition occurred this past October, the purchase was 28 years in the making. Rosen turned activist for the facility in 1992 when the private center, then called the Justus Aquatic Center, was shut down by the mortgage holder. “I remember arriving at the center one day and finding some Special Olympians hovering about,” said Rosen. “One of the youngsters recognized me as a swimmer there. They asked me if they’d done something wrong, to have it closed. It broke my heart. I knew I had to do something.”

RESPECTING ITS PLACE WITHIN THE FABRIC OF THE ORLANDO COMMUNITY, AND ESPECIALLY THE SWIMMING COMMUNITY, ROSEN CALLED UPON CELEBRITIES, ORGANIZATIONS, AND EVEN ORANGE COUNTY TO HELP SAVE THE COMPETITIVE SWIMMING CENTER. From left to right: Lucky Meisenheimer, Joe Dzaluk, President & CEO, 2022 Special Olympics USA Games, Mike Miller, Director, RAFC, Harris Rosen, John David Haywood, Special Olympics Florida athlete, Sherry Wheelock, President & CEO, Special Olympics Florida, Meghan McLean, Senior Vice President, 2022 Special Olympics USA Games.

Respecting its place within the fabric of the Orlando community, and especially the swimming community, Rosen called upon celebrities, organizations, and even Orange County to help save the competitive swimming center. Under his visionary leadership, the facility was ultimately gifted to the YMCA of Central Florida and revenue-generating programs were put in place to help offset operating costs. Rosen also helped by donating millions to the YMCA through the years. In 2018, to honor his extreme dedication, the facility was renamed the Rosen YMCA Aquatic Center. “Did I ever envision owning a facility like this? Not in my wildest dreams,” said Rosen, who as the Southeast’s largest independent hotelier, has owned and operated Rosen Hotels & Resorts for close to 47 years. “These are not necessarily the times when one would take on such a project. However, I came to realize that perhaps these are just the times when we need to preserve any normalcy that we can and any opportunity to maintain our health. Hearing from so many in the community who would be devastated by its closing, I felt compelled to help keep the doors open and appreciate the partnership of

the YMCA of Central Florida in allowing me to do this through their generous gift.” Since the transition, the RAFC has undergone a deep cleaning, multiple renovations and a general sprucing up, elevating it to Rosen standards. The facility also features heightened safety and wellness protocols in response to the recent pandemic, implemented as part of Rosen’s Total Commitment™. As one of the largest competitive swimming facilities in the Southeast, the RAFC boasts one of only seven indoor performance diving rooms in the nation and is known as one of the fastest tanks in the nation. The 10-meter dive tower and 50-meter competition pool are unrivaled in the state, with the pool easily transitioning from indoor to outdoor with a first-of-its-kind hydraulic retractable roof. Numerous world and American records have been set over the years at the facility by Pablo Morales, Janet Evans, Matt Biondi, Tom Jager, Dara Torres and others. The RAFC is focused just as strongly on fitness and community wellness programs as on aquatics. The facility incorporates The Adam

Michael Rosen Fitness Center, named in honor of Rosen’s son Adam who passed away at the age of 26 of glioblastoma. Adam’s incredible and inspiring dedication to health and fitness is the impetus for creating an extensive workout and wellness center featuring 60 machines ranging from cardio equipment to arm, back, chest and leg machines in addition to an area with free weights, racquetball court and locker rooms. Group exercise classes -including aquatics classes like water Zumba -will be available in-person (with proper social distancing) and via live streaming. The RAFC also will continue to be home for hundreds of children who will learn drown prevention and swimming skills. The Rosen Aquatic & Fitness Center is located at 8422 International Drive, Orlando, FL 32819. The Future isELECTRIC ELECTRIC Audi Audi E-Tron E-Tron Electric Cars By Devyn Le

TOYS

Electric cars have been all the rage these past few years and Audi has recently announced two new electric cars to be added to their e-tron family, including the RS e-tron GT and the e-tron GT quattro. With the release of an electric line, Audi is one step closer to their goal of “achieving net CO2 neutrality by 2050.” The two new electric cars added to the e-tron line push past performance data to exemplify the technical brilliance of Audi. Audi has combined the irresistible combination of the gran turismo concept with an aerodynamic design to give drivers a smooth yet thrilling drive in the e-tron GT quattro. In the RS e-tron GT, drivers are given the product of combining performance with progressiveness without having to choose between one or the other. Furthermore, regarding the design of the RS, the aerodynamics can be actively adjusted depending on the driving situation. The two settings available for drivers are for the rear wing as well as the adjustable cooling air inlets at the front of the vehicle. To reduce drag, drivers can use the adaptive air suspension to lower the vehicle at higher speeds. The Audi e-tron GT models that are produced in the United States will benefit from a 93.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack along with an integrated cooling structure beneath the battery. This technology allows for the heat to be drawn away from the battery and the battery to be housed inside an aluminum frame. This aluminum frame is designed to protect occupants of the vehicle and to provide structural rigidity. Because Audi’s e-tron models are made up of an 800-volt electrical architecture, they have the ability to charge at an industry-benchmark of 270kW utilizing DC fast-chargers. Because of this unique factor, these cars able to replenish their batteries from 5 to 80 percent within approximately 20 minutes- among the

quickest charging rates currently available in the market. The reason why the Audi e-tron GT cars share the same performance as the world’s most thrilling roller coasters is because Audi has incorporated the science behind permanently excited magnets into the cars’ design. In both the front and rear axles, drivers can expect the e-tron GT and the RS e-tron GT to have permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM). Due to the motors’ ample, they produce instant torque from a standstill. This science allows for the e-tron GT’s front motor to produce 235 horsepower and the rear motor to produce 429 horsepower. The motors’ combined net of horsepower output is between 469 to 522 with overboost. This allows for the e-tron GT to accelerate from 0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds with a top track speed of 152mph. The RS e-tron shares the same front PSM as the e-tron GT but the rear motor is much stronger and is capable of producing 450 horsepower alone. With the front and rear motors combined, the RS produces a net 590 to 637 horsepower with overboost. The acceleration rate from 0 to 60 in the RS is about 3.1 seconds with a top track speed of 155mph. This data places the RS e-tron alongside Audi’s v10-powered R8 supercar, while generating zero direct emissions. The Audi e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT models will arrive in the United States during the summer months of this year. More details will be provided by Audi America in regards to pricing of trim level-specific packages closer to on-sale timing. However, the manufacturer suggested retail pricing ranges from $99,900 to $139,000. The e-tron GT quattro Premium Plus starts at $99,900 not including upgrades or taxes, the e-tron GT quattro Prestige starts at $107,100, and the RS e-tron GT starts at $139,900. Interested shoppers are able to find more information on Audi’s electric car line at www.audiusa.com.

These fun prints and colors will bring in the summer months with a sense of hope and optimism that we’ve been waiting for.

Gender Norms No More

Designers are skipping conformity this season. A few issues ago we talked about men wearing skirts and the rise of cancelling gender norms. Well, we’re back to the same subject of gender norms but now designers have given us ruffles, pastels, and pearls that are creating a decidedly romantic and opulent look in men’s fashion. Etro felt it fit to provide us knits matched with velvet chartreuse blazers for a nice dreamy look, while Dior Homme brought colorful fur coats mixed with military silhouettes to the runway. 2021 is all about experimentation

within the luxurious fashion industry. Likewise, Arturo Obegero’s self-titled line presented us with velvet jumpsuits and ruffle scarves to be draped around the body. These looks exemplify the cancellation of gender normality that is becoming more than just a trend. Along with these Obegero looks, Angus Chiang set us up with a focal point of shining silk lapels and bold crystal brooches. Who said accessorizing had to be conforming? Try one of these high-brow looks this season

Even though we live in swimsuit season all year round, we are giving you the top swimwear trends to know this season. From soft-to-touch comforting fabrics to sophisticated animal prints, here are a few swimwear trends that you should consider when adding to your collection. For your underwire bra-top, the designers of this season have now upgraded this look with the sculpted underwire. Although it is similar to the original underwire with its flattering lifting, the sculpting addition also provides for a more dynamic and dimensional look for your beach bod. Another trend to know this summer before hitting the beach is that side cut-outs are out, and keyhole cut-outs are in. With the strategic placement and subtle design, the keyhole gives a flattering look but can also be used as

a multipurpose wardrobe piece. Even if you don’t plan on hitting the beach, you can pair a one piece that has a keyhole cut-out with a pair of denim shorts and still look great on a hot summer day. Likewise, body-hugging asymmetrical cuts are also trending. These cuts accentuate the body’s natural curves and give your swimsuit a refreshing feel. Moreover, for your animal print piece, this season we are elevating this common summer look and choosing more subtle and minimal iterations of our favorite prints. The zebra and tiger prints aren’t as harsh in lines and give an overall softer look to compliment your skin and body. Before you hit the beach this summer, try incorporating some of these trends into your swimwear collection.

BELOVED LINES The idea behind Gucci Beloved Lines begins with a favourite accessory of the wardrobe that is a constant source of admiration for its owner. It is the bag that came on a first date with someone who became a life partner. Or another worn to an important interview. One carried to the party of the year. Gucci Beloved pieces are also the centrepieces of your everyday – companions that pull you together, elevate a look, make your style yours. Channelling this message, Gucci Beloved pieces become protagonists, assuming with elegance and poise the leading role in a look, and a personal style. A reference to the House’s past and the way it defines its now, each Gucci Beloved piece is designed by Alessandro Michele with a contemporary approach to archival elements. These motifs and styles, so inherent and distinctly Gucci, become renewed in pieces that are created to be worn again and again, transcending seasons and trends. At the heart of the Gucci Beloved Lines is the Dionysus bag, which features two tiger heads shaped in the form of a spur, an ode to the Greek god who in myth is said to have crossed the river Tigris on a tiger sent to him by Zeus. Debuting at the women’s Autumn/Winter 2015 fashion show, Alessandro Michele’s first women’s presentation for the House, Dionysus embodies the Creative Director’s vision of products that are uniquely expressive of their time. Then there is the Gucci Horsebit 1955, distinguished by a double ring and bar, a motif that encapsulates the House’s rich equestrian heritage – a handbag connecting archival elements with contemporary details in an effortless way. Meanwhile, the GG Marmont is defined by the Double G, an archive-inspired styling of the initials of the House. Alessandro Michele has given this hardware its current three-dimensional iteration and it also comes in a twisted torchon version. And finally there is the Jackie 1961, known for its curved halfmoon shape and emblematic piston closure. This is a bag that tells a story that spans eras, remaining timeless but always possessing a contemporary edge. Elegant with a vintage

spirit, the Jackie 1961 enjoys signature standing within the House line-up, ever ready for a turn in the spotlight. Now, taking their cue from precious stones, these key Gucci Beloved pieces get polished into a new expression, referencing sapphires, emeralds and rubies. Combining elegance with street-smart relevance, the Dionysus small shoulder bag is paired with the GG Marmont small shoulder bag and camera case and shoulder bag and mini top handle Gucci Horsebit 1955 in either green, blue or red leather. Contrasting trim characterises all three colours: petroleum on electric blue, dark green on brilliant green, and light rose on cherry red. Moreover, a white enamelled buckle is introduced here for the first time for Dionysus, and the twisted Double G torchon detail for GG Marmont is elevated with a gold finish paired with tone-on-tone leather enamel: the colour of the enamel matches the hue of whichever gem is the inspiration for the bag. Extending the colour theme, bicolour and tricolour combinations are explored across the four Gucci Beloved styles. With a summery, timeless mood, Dionysus and Gucci Horsebit 1955 shoulder bags are presented in a tricolour combination: white, black and burnt orange; while Jackie 1961 hobos and the Gucci Horsebit 1955 top handle come in a bicolour combination: a timeless white trimmed with black leather for the two hobos (medium and small size) and mini top handle. All these options will perfectly match any outfit, from the more casual to the most refined and sophisticated. A second colour combination has a nautical summer theme with a vintage spirit and mixes more conventional hues: blue leather with red trim for a bicolored Jackie 1961, and a blue and red mix of leather with butter trim to refresh Dionysus and GG Marmont styles. For the Jackie 1961 the offer is still of the two sizes of hobo bag (small and medium), while in Dionysus only the small iconic shoulder bag is presented, and in GG Marmont the popular small shoulder bag with flap is paired with the

mini top handle. The Dionysus style comes with an electric blue enamelled buckle closure, while the GG Marmont is elevated by the gold Double G twisted torchon. For a more autumnal look, again with a distinctly vintage appearance, the third set of bicolour and tricolour combinations features tones of brownish red, dark blue and classic beige. The two sizes of the Jackie 1961 hobo are again present (medium and small), along with the Dionysus small shoulder bag, here presented for the first time with a white enamelled buckle. For the Gucci Horsebit 1955 the three colours are mixed together on the iconic shoulder bag with flap. Meanwhile, a bicolour combination is offered on mini top handle as a more refined and sophisticated option. Finally, for those looking for something extra special, the Gucci Beloved bags get the luxury treatment through the use of precious skins: timeless and sophisticated colours of crocodile and ostrich enrich the four styles. The colour palette of crocodile ranges from basic black, white and red to an elegant and refined burnt orange, while ostrich comes in timeless white and green and a sunny yellow. The Dionysus shoulder bags in crocodile come with an electric blue enamelled closure, while in the ostrich models the tiger head buckle is in white enamel. Still in the world of precious skins, new styles of the Gucci Horsebit 1955 are presented in python, where colours range from basics to vivid hues. Furthermore, Dionysus classic shoulder bags are refreshed – presented in white leather with red python trim, and in black and green leather with a ‘rock’ python flap. A similar look, in black and green leather with a ‘rock’ python flap, is available in the newly introduced Dionysus small shoulder bag with crossbody strap. Once again, the Dionysus styles are enriched with electric blue enamelled closures.

Because of the pandemic, many couples are opting for micro-weddings, which are smaller, more intimate ceremonies. With this smaller or even virtual wedding, many brides have started to choose casual wedding dresses and attire. We are seeing that a trend for this year will be the minimalist wedding dress. This look features structured fabrics and clean lines allowing for a simple, yet elegant look. Try this look for your small at home wedding, paired with some classy heels. Another trend for the weddings of 2021 are outfits that can be recycled after the wedding ceremony. Instead of purchasing dresses that are for special occasions only, such as receptions and bridal parties, brides are now buying items that can be worn casually or for a night out. Opting for a pantsuit, jumpsuit, or a duo allows you to recycle your look away from the wedding.

By Devyn Le

Alongside those trends are the short wedding dresses. Because of the rise in elopements and courthouse-style weddings, many brides are skipping the long hemlines and instead are saying yes to midi-length and mini dresses. These outfits allow for an elegant and chic look, but also by choosing a cocktail-length dress, the bride is enabled the opportunity to wear a dress she already owns or to buy a new affordable ready-to-wear dress. Furthermore, the ‘20s-style wedding dress is starting to trend. The Roaring ‘20s followed World War I, and everyone had the appetite to party which led to the beaded dresses, sparkle, and fringe. Similarly, bridal experts are expecting a surge in the Gatsby Era trends with the bridal dresses of 2021 when it’s safe to party again. Say hello to the Roaring ‘20s 2.0!

Popping Champagne with a Pop of Color

WEDDING STYLE

Color Palettes for 2021 Weddings While you are curating your wedding’s theme and aesthetic the first step is to start with color. This year we are seeing a rise in bold, vibrant, and daring color schemes for décor and tablescapes. These pops of color will keep your guests enticed and keep your wedding looking fresh. Instead of picking just two to three hues, consider all the shades and tones of those hues. You can include neutrals organically and as needed, but don’t limit yourself. You can source your wedding day colors from anything that speaks to youfrom your home, to your favorite destination, to a print or fabric you love. Anything that inspires you will definitely help your wedding be that bold this spring needs. Primary tones are alive for this year’s weddings. Red, blue, and yellow are now fuchsia, robin’s egg, and lemon for these ceremonies. Pairing these primary colors with other reds, blushes, soft blues, and cremes will allow for a palette that employs fun and fierceness. These palette schemes

allow you to be unrestricted and to incorporate some prints and textures that allow for design layers. Another color trend for this spring is skipping a color combination and exploring the variety of a single hue while working in all its shades, tones, and textures. With many ceremonies taking place outdoors, an entirely green palette feels spot on for a greenhouse, vineyard, or woodland setting. Utilizing this green scheme where natural textures and floral elements can be worked in will keep your wedding feeling fresh and organic. Furthermore, a popular spring palette for weddings are the everlasting pastels. This color scheme is versatile for those ceremonies on the beach or in your backyard. By incorporating shades of a buff to a collection of dreamy tones, the popular pastel palette remains chic and alive for your 2021 wedding celebration.

LET THEM EAT CAKE! The Mini Cake Although small wedding cakes are not a new concept, the mini cake has become quite trendy for 2021’s weddings. These individual mini cakes allow the guests to feel special with a personal experience while encouraging safety by not sharing. For the cakes, you’ll want to keep them simple with some tonal flowers. This will highlight the elegance of the concept with a sweet and minimalist look. You can also incorporate a theme into your mini cakes, further elevating the ceremony and experience.

Unbox This

The Welcome Box

Now that weddings are being downsized to micro-weddings, couples are now working with their planners to design guest-centered welcome boxes. Similar to welcome bags, these boxes house safe event necessities for those that are attending the ceremony. For instance, many of these boxes have personalized hand sanitizers, programs, masks, and party favors. This functions as a cute new way to highlight the need for safety while allowing the guest to still experience the wedding ceremony.

A Century of Looks By Devyn Le

a decline in heavy kohl eyeshadows with an increase in light cream shadows. With these cream shadows, Helena Rubinstein launched the first waterproof mascara and ladies became obsessed with doing their lashes. Additionally, with these lighter and brighter makeup looks, women started to opt for longer shoulder length hair with finger waves rather than the sleek bob of the ‘20s.

Makeup and cosmetics have been an important part of history for centuries, especially for special occasions. For this bridal season we are giving you the rundown of looks from the 1920’s to now. During the 20’s, makeup played a vital role in the women who were recovering from World War I. To escape the horrors and experiences they faced, the women utilized makeup to assert a new sense of feminine power. In this Gatsby Era, freedom reigned, and flappers were born with elegance and glamour. The 1920’s saw bright red lipsticks with dark doe eyes and ivory pale skin achieved through creams, rouge papers, and liquid foundations. Women of this decade also used kohl eyeshadow for dark sultry looks and had their eyebrows plucked for the first time and drawn downward. Hollywood star Clara Bow even made the cupid’s bow lip a staple for every woman of the ‘20s with metal lip tracers being released to obtain the perfect pouty lip. This lip look was actually smaller than the natural outline of the original lips. Along with these makeup looks came the marcel waved hair that gave all the women a sleek and chic updo for every occasion of Art Deco.

As the 30’s ended and in came the ‘40s, makeup had become a massive industry. Lips were redder than ever before, and eyebrows were prominently arched. Women wanted to sport deep luscious full lips and did so by utilizing a pencil to overline their lips. To add glossiness and luster they would use a touch of Vaseline. Paired with these makeup looks were short tight ring-curls and some waves but this quickly went out of style and was taken over by a short, curly and practical hairstyle from 1945 to the end of the decade. Another popular hair style was called the Queue Curl with a flat top and the sides and back curled.

Furthermore, the 1930’s golden age of Hollywood glamour also served us some becoming and refined looks. Eyebrows became pencil thin and lips lost their cupid’s bow as cinematic talkies became popular. These newly released films encouraged women to fully apply their lipsticks as more attention was being brought to the lips and mouth. The 30’s also witnessed

Moreover, Post-World War II America saw the rise of the pin-up look as women continued to assert their feminine power through makeup and cosmetology. The 1950’s became even more glamourous than the ‘20s. Cream foundations and eyeshadows were a staple product to have during this time and they allowed for the era of the “mask effect.” Women would

apply thick creamy foundation with nude colored powders to set and pink hues on their eye lids. The eyebrows were no longer pencil thin but were actually more natural with a tapered look. Eyeliner also added glamour because now the women would apply a cat eyeline with a winged tip to emphasize real glamour and draw attention to a woman’s eyes. Paired with these fabulous facial looks were pin curls that were rolled flat against the head and held with pins. With the hair ends tucked underneath the curl before it’s pinned down, women were able to achieve an extremely classy and prestigious look. Although the ‘50s brought class, the ‘60s brought bold eye looks. Women of the ‘60s proceeded to experiment and created deep-set eyes, prominent eyes, and close-set eyes. For the deep-set eye look they highlighted the whole eyelid with white eyeshadow then blended an iridescent shadow on the outer part of the lid. After, they would line the top and bottom lids very finely and add mascara. For the prominent look women would put eyeshadow on the whole lid with natural brown, grey, soft blue, or green to match with the eye color. They created an emphasis on the eyes by using a brown shadow or eye pencil in the socket arch and eyeliner drawn strongly close to the top lashes. For the close-set eye look the ladies of the ‘60s would highlight the whole eyelid with white and blend a pale iridescent shadow on the outer part of the eyelid and wing it up towards the brow bone. Then they would finely outline three-quarters of the top and bottom eyelids with curving lines slightly beyond the outer corner of the eye. With these new experimental makeup looks the beehive hairstyle also became popular. This look was achieved by piling one’s hair on top of the head in a conical shape and setting it with extreme amounts of hairspray. The beehive hair look became a staple of the ‘60s and was worn by celebrities including the musical group The Ronettes and Aretha Franklin. In with the new and out with the old, the 70’s put lipsticks and mascaras in the backseat and ran with lip glosses and creams. They wanted to embrace a more natural look in the era of folk festivals and oil shortages. Shimmer eyeshadows were applied on the eyelids and the eyebrows were kept natural and tamed with clear mascara. For the face, light liquid formulas and opalescent powders were applied for a healthy glowing look. Matched with these glowing dewy looks were the feathered hairstyles. This style

works with mid-length to long hair brushed back and outward at the sides to give the appearance of feathers. Both celebrities and non-celebrities of the ‘70s wore this popular hairstyle. The girls of the ‘80s just wanted to have fun and brought technicolor looks to the table. Blues, purples, and pinks dominated the eyelids of this decade as well as bold and bushy eyebrows. Along with these disco tech looks were extremely heavily lined eye similar to raccoon eyes. Women would trace the tops and bottoms of each eyelid with eyeliner and then smudge it all together for the rocker look. With these two different makeup styles, many women still opted for the crimped or curly hairstyle. Everyone wanted long and curly big hair during the ‘80s. The 90’s saw a few different make up trends such as blue eyeshadow and skinny thin eyebrows. For the eyebrows, women would overpluck a draw a thin line over their eyebrows and for the blue eyeshadow they used a darker blue on the outer corner and worked a lighter hue into the inner corner and lower lash line. This became a common look for celebrities to sport on the red carpet and for daily wear. With this bright blue bold eye look, many girls chose pinned up hair with small details such as butterfly clips. The hair was pulled back and curled and then pinned and expressed extreme volume. Now into the 21st century, the early 2000’s saw chunky highlights with loose up-dos and sleek layers side swept with bangs. To pair with these hair looks, ladies wore smoky eyeshadow with pencilthin arches for eyebrows and glossy nude lips. Into the 2010’s, eyebrows became bolder with lush lashes and heavy matte foundations. Women also introduced heavy contouring and highlighting for the facial structure. With this style of makeup came tousled beach curls for an effortlessly cool vibe. This beach wave look has carried into the 2020’s proving to be timeless and is paired with a beautiful glowing face look. To accomplish this, women are hydrating and moisturizing to create a glowing complexion. They are also doing a no makeup makeup look in which you wear minimal amounts of foundation and blush with natural tamed eyebrows and nude shadowed eyelids. To pair with this natural look, statement lips are back and bolder than ever.

CELEBRITY SOUP

Celebrity Weddings Impacted by the CORONAVIRUS By Riesa Pascal

CELEBRITY SOUP

If your nuptials were postponed by COVID-19, take heart because you are not alone! In addition to countless other industries, the wedding business was hit extremely hard by coronavirus and if you’re anything like me, you probably even know a few people personally who had to reschedule or cancel their 2020 nuptials. Maybe it was even your own wedding that had the unfortunate luck of having been scheduled to take place in the middle of a global pandemic. If this resonates with you today, then hopefully you can find comfort in knowing that countless other couples across the world also experienced a wedding delay last year. Even high-profile celebrities couldn’t escape the impact of the 2020 lockdown and they have all the wealth and fame in the world! In the spirit of this being our Bridal Issue, here’s a look at some famous faces who unfortunately had their 2020 weddings delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. PRINCESS BEATRICE On April 16th, the royal wedding of Queen Elizabeth II's granddaughter was officially postponed for a THIRD time—talk about bad luck! The first two postponements were related to her father Prince Andrew's controversial ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, but the third was due to the coronavirus pandemic. Princess Beatrice had plans to marry her fiancé Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi on May 29th in a lavish ceremony at The Chapel Royal in St. James's Palace followed by a private garden reception hosted in Buckingham Palace by the Queen. Apparently three postponements was the final straw for Princess Beatrice as she and her fiancé ultimately traded in their grand party for an intimate affair with 20 family members and close friends at the Royal Chapel of All Saints on July 17th. JENNIFER LOPEZ AND ALEX RODRIGUEZ In an interview on The Ellen Degeneres Show, Jennifer Lopez revealed that COVID-19 affected her plans to wed Alex Rodriguez in the summer of 2020. Lopez spoke of the postponement saying, "Honestly, I really don't know what's going to happen now as far as dates or anything like that. We're just kind of in a holding pattern like the rest of the world. Again, it's something that we're gonna have to wait and see in a few months, how this all pans out." Considering the fact that the power couple just recently called it quits on their relationship, perhaps the coronavirus wedding postponement did them a favor? BINDI IRWIN & CHANDLER POWELL Bindi Irwin had plans for a large wedding with her longtime beau Chandler Powell, but COVID-19 put an abrupt stop to that dream. Instead, Irwin tied the knot on March 25th at the Australia Zoo

with only a few family members in attendance. Irwin spoke of the wedding on Instagram saying, "We've planned this beautiful day for nearly a year and had to change everything, as we didn't have guests at our wedding. This was a very difficult decision but important to keep everyone safe. We wish all of our friends and family could have been there with us." The bride and groom lit a candle together in honor of her late father, the legendary animal enthusiast Steve Irwin. KATY PERRY & ORLANDO BLOOM On top of dealing with the stress of a pregnancy, soon-to-be new parents Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom also had to replan their entire wedding when the coronavirus cancelled their June nuptials in Japan. A source close to the couple spoke of the ceremony to People magazine saying, "It was all set for Japan with 150 guests. Katy was actually really excited about walking down the aisle pregnant. They were both so elated that all the wedding details were finally coming together, but they are hitting pause because of coronavirus." The couple have since welcomed a daughter into the world and though Perry has recently been spotted with a new ring on her hand, neither she nor Bloom have yet to comment publicly on plans for a rescheduled wedding. SARAH HYLAND & WELLS ADAMS Modern Family star Sarah Hyland and her fiancé Wells Adams had plans to wed in August 2020. When it became clear that the coronavirus wasn’t going anywhere, the couple abruptly postponed their plans saying, "We postponed wedding planning because we want to be able to focus on what's important right now, and that's helping to spread information to wear masks and to only go out for essential needs and also take a really big look inside yourself and reflect on how you treat others." On the day that would’ve been their wedding, the two lovebirds “celebrated” by pretending to exchange vows at a vineyard while donning matching 'bride' and 'groom' face masks. LAURA SAVOIE & DENNIS QUAID When Hollywood actor Dennis Quaid and his fiancé Laura Savoie planned an intimate wedding ceremony in Hawaii, they had no idea that their dream day would eventually become just that… a dream. The nuptials were set to take place on April 4th in the same destination where Quaid popped the question, but rising fears over the coronavirus encouraged the couple to push back their wedding day. A few months after the postponement, the duo ultimately eloped in an intimate beachside ceremony at a Santa Barbara resort.

A. MICHELLE JERNIGAN, ESQ. Principal, Upchurch Watson White & Max Mediation Group “You are just too young and too female. You won’t make it,” a seasoned lawyer told Michelle Jernigan when she shared her decision to evolve from litigation to alternative dispute resolution in the late ’80s. However, after a 10-year career in litigation, she was up for the challenge, and her perseverance paid dividends. Now, after 34 years as a professional neutral, Michelle has been named a principal of Upchurch Watson White & Max Mediation Group, a firm dedicated to dispute resolution. As one of the mediator/arbitrators on the firm’s roster at its 1996 inception, her elevation earlier this year rewarded decades of dedication and determination to succeed in her field. Her legal career began at the Orange County State Attorney’s office after she earned a juris doctorate at Stetson University College of Law in 1981, preceded by a bachelor of science degree in political science at Stetson University. Michelle prosecuted misdemeanor cases for a year-and-a-half before entering private practice with the law firm of Broad and Cassel (now Nelson Mullins Broad and Cassel). She specialized in commercial litigation until she left that practice to pursue a full-time career in dispute resolution. After launching her mediation career in 1987, Michelle was one of the first mediators to be certified by the Florida Supreme Court in 1988. Since then, she has mediated thousands of cases throughout Florida – almost every type of civil dispute in federal and state courts, ranging from complex commercial matters to wrongful death cases. A mediation pioneer, she served as a consultant to the Florida Supreme Court as it established mediation mentorship rules and sat as a member of the Florida Supreme Court’s Mediation Training Review Board from 1997 to 2013. Michelle has poured her professionalism, thoughtfulness, diplomacy and grace back into the dispute resolution community through decades of training new mediators. She currently serves as an assistant trainer in the Florida Supreme Court’s Certified Circuit Civil Mediation Training Program. Years ago, she developed and implemented mediation training programs for Orlando Regional Healthcare Systems (now Orlando Health) and Eckerd Corporation (now CVS Health). Michelle has trained hundreds of mediators in Florida, written numerous articles on mediation and is a recognized speaker in the field of dispute resolution. Additionally, Michelle is a past editor and past treasurer for the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of The Florida Bar and remains a member of the section’s executive council. She is a member and past director of the American College of Civil Trial Mediators and a founding member, past director and past president of the Florida Academy of Professional Mediators. Michelle is also the proud and devoted mother of two grown daughters. Her devotion to her family harmonizes with her active membership in First Presbyterian Church of Orlando, since 1982, and her service on the board of trustees for the Heart of the City Foundation. Michelle says she has been called into the field of dispute resolution and believes: “Blessed are the peacemakers.”

DIANNE DOWNIE Dan Newlin Injury Attorneys Born in the Bronx, NY to parents in the military, my family and I moved around a lot. From a young age, I got to see many parts of the world and meet lots of people. I knew from a young age, helping others was my purpose. Upon settling in Central Florida, I graduated from the University of Central Florida with a BS in Psychology & Masters Degree in Communication. I furthered my studies by attending and graduating law school with a Juris Doctorate from Barry University School of Law in Orlando. My purpose in helping my community, started with my first legal job at Bodiford Law Group helping severe and tragically injured clients, across the country, who suffered injuries as a result of products liability and personal injury. After 10 years at Bodiford, my passion for those injured in my community continued, as I became a member of Dan Newlin Injury Attorneys, in 2018. I care deeply for all my clients and I use that care and concern in the legal counsel and advice I provide to my clients. It truly is an honor to be a zealous advocate for the powerless against insurance companies and automobile manufacturers. I am also a member of Orange county Bar association and Hispanic Bar Association of Orange county that allows me to give back to both the legal community and the public. Growing up in Central Florida has been so fulfilling. Now a wife and mother of two, I get the chance to experience this area for all that it has to offer while creating memories and life lessons with my husband and children. Although I have traveled to many different places, I am so glad to call Central Florida my home.

ELIZABETH COLLINS PLUMMER

Civil Trial Attorney

Quintairos, Prieto, Wood & Boyer, P.A. Quintairos, Prieto, Wood & Boyer, P.A. is the largest minority and women owned law firm in the country. Civil defense litigation is a field traditionally dominated by men, particularly at the trial level. So, it’s not surprising that Elizabeth, an experienced civil trial lawyer, joined QPWB as a partner in the Orlando office.

It is the highest compliment when an insured person or business asks an insurance carrier to retain Elizabeth to defend a matter or hires her directly as personal counsel. Because of QPWB’s relationships with many major insurance carriers, an insured’s request for Elizabeth as counsel can often be met.

For over 20 years, Elizabeth has represented clients from presuit through trial and appeal – developing and implementing successful strategies for litigation and resolution. She has focused on defending cases involving wrongful death and personal injury; medical malpractice; nursing home negligence; negligent security; and civil rights violations.

Elizabeth received her Juris Doctor, with honors, and Bachelor of Science, with honors, from the University of Florida. Since 2006, Elizabeth has been an approved instructor of continuing education, certified by the Florida Department of Financial Services, Division of Insurance Agent and Agency Services.

Plaintiff ’s attorneys often advertise as representing individuals, suggesting that civil defense attorneys do not. However, Elizabeth remembers well the dedicated neonatal intensive care nurse who was accused of medical negligence. Elizabeth still thinks of small business owner who was facing a potential life-altering judgment, after a third-party criminal attack on her property. She recalls the student involved in a car accident, accused of reckless misconduct, who feared a punitive damage award, as he began his adult life. Although an insurance company often provides a defense for civil defendants, in instances like these, a successful resolution through settlement or at trial can have a tremendous impact on a person’s life.

Before relocating to Orlando, Elizabeth served as both the President of the Eighth Judicial Circuit Bar Association Young Lawyers Division and President of the Eighth Judicial Circuit Bar Association. She has remained active in bar activities, including acting as the current Co-Chair of the Orange County Bar Association Health and Wellness Committee and volunteering as a Guardian ad Litem. Elizabeth is licensed to practice law in Florida and is admitted in the U.S. District Courts for the Middle, Northern, and Southern Districts of Florida; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit; and the United States Supreme Court.

VACATIONLAND

VACATIONLAND A Universal Legacy The rebranding of the Universal Studios Store The Universal Studios Store at CityWalk Orlando has officially changed its name to Universal Legacy Store where it contains décor and props from classic park attractions and movies. This rebranding comes with the fact that there will be a new larger Universal Studios Store to be constructed at the front entrance of CityWalk, which will be geared more towards merchandise than attraction props. Likewise, in this Universal Legacy Store, there are props and replicas being added every day from Hagrid’s motorbike to costumes used in the filming of Terminator 2: 3D. Come check out this store on your next Universal Orlando trip.

Jurassic World VelociCoaster

A new species of rollercoaster. Universal Orlando has just announced the opening of the Jurassic World VelociCoaster which will take place on June 10th of this summer at Universal’s Islands of Adventure. As you board your vehicle, be prepared for a high-speed dash through the park’s raptor paddock. Through the jungle you’ll speed and rise high above the terrain as the apex predator. With this ride, theme park goers will be able to experience the rush of the hunt as the coaster races alongside the nimble velociraptors. This new species of roller coaster, designed by the Universal Creative team and acclaimed filmmakers from Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment, brings to life a new Jurassic World story, one never experienced before.

Cool Again

Club Cool to return to EPCOT A favorite of Walt Disney World’s EPCOT used to be Club Cool, which unfortunately closed back in 2019. Club Cool was a Coca-Cola store that also allowed theme park goers to sample different sodas from around the world. Many fans were disappointed to see this fun experience go to make way for the construction of a new central area in EPCOT. Fortunately, Disney has recently announced plans to bring back the fan-favorite Club Cool in a new and exciting way. The new location of Club Cool will be open next to a new store called Creations Shop in the front of the park where MouseGears used to be. This neighborhood within EPCOT will be called World Celebration. 64

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

The VelociCoaster, engineered to mirror the hunt of the apex predator as well as the speed, will enable riders to soar across 4,700 feet of track, 12 seconds of airtime, and near misses with only a lap bar holding them in the revolutionary ride vehicle. Of the two pulse-pounding launches, riders will be launched to 70 miles per hour in approximately 2.4 seconds. Along with these intense launches, riders will also be propelled 155 feet in the air and then immediately thrown into an 80-degree drop and must endure a 360-degree barrel-roll on the coaster. Universal has stated that their new ride will become Florida’s tallest and fastest launch coaster when it opens in June.

ORLANDO SHAKES INVADES LAKE EOLA PARK With Campy Musical Comedy, Little Shop of Horrors For their second in-person, socially distanced production at Lake Eola Park, Orlando Shakes in partnership with UCF is taking over Orlando with the hilarious award-winning, musical send-up of sci-fi 50’s movies, Little Shop of Horrors (May 5 - 23, 2021). This Broadway and Hollywood smash musical has devoured the hearts of theater goers for over 30 years with it’s campy telling of a carnivorous plant from outer-space named Audrey II. Howard Ashman and Alan Menken (Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty and The Beast, and Aladdin) are the creative geniuses behind what has become one of the most popular shows in the world. Tickets (starting at $27) for Little Shop of Horrors are available now by phone (407) 447-1700 ext. 1 or online at orlandoshakes.org. “Like Faust on fertilizer, Audrey II is starving to share her story with the citizens of Orlando,” Director Steve MacKinnon said. “Our mean green mother of a musical is going to be a wild, reimagining of the cult classic, as our man-eating plant takes over The City Beautiful.” Dance, music, and laughter will invade Orlando with this extra(terrestrial) musical. The vibrant, all-local cast features Ricky Cona* as Seymour Krelborn, Lillie Thomas* as Audrey, Steve Purnick* as Mr. Mushnik, T. Robert Pigott* as Orin Scrivello, AC Jenkins* as Audrey II, Amitria Fanae* as Crystal, Jasmine Maslanova-Brown* as Ronnette, Jataria Heyward* as Chiffon, as well as an ensemble including Jeremy Marchena, Arielle St. Cyr, Darren Escarcha Cajipo, Joshua Kimball, and Amy Livingston.

Orlando Shakes in partnership with UCF returns to Lake Eola Park with an irresistible production of Little Shop of Horrors.
