PUBLISHER’S NOTE
Dear Readers, Now that we’re making our way into April, I’m reminded of an old saying: there are some things you just can’t avoid: taxes and getting older. It’s been said time and again, but it still rings true for us. Well, hopefully our taxes will be taken care of by the 15th day of the month, but getting older is a different story. As much as we wish that aging were escapable, we just can’t seem to avoid it no matter how much we try. We may not be exactly certain of all of the mysteries of life, but as long as we live here on earth, we can continue to develop better and better ways to keep our human race youthful, energetic, and healthy. So let’s enjoy the beauty that spring has to offer this month in sunny Orlando. Now that the chilly weather is finally fading away in the Florida sunshine, let’s take a moment to look at all the wonderful aspects of life that have already made 2017 a year to remember, especially those new and amazing developments in the medicine and beauty industries. This issue of Orlando Style is here to remind us all to take a break, relax, and enjoy the lovely things of each day. Let’s not just stop and smell the roses, but soak up their beautiful color and enjoy watching them dance in the wind. Life is short, and those who take the time to allow their mind to linger on the sunny side seem to make this life better and, perhaps, even longer. When we take care of our lives, from the health of our bodies to our happy mindsets, we’ll not only find ourselves enjoying life, but we’ll also increase the number of days we have to share with those we love. This month, remember to take the opportunity to see your doctor, hit the gym, visit the spa, splurge on an afternoon at the salon or socialize with friends and family at your favorite restaurant and really enjoy and “taste” life.

For our calendar-conscious crowd, April 1st begins our annual “Got Style” campaign to extend our subscriber base. All new and renewal clientele are eligible to win $500 in prizes* offered at: www.OrlandoStyleMagazine.com/ Subscribe And here is a quote of our famous president for this day of the month of April: You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time. ~ Abraham Lincoln Make the best of this and send us your feedback : info@ styletome.com. Until next month, have some springtime fun in the sun! Truly Yours,

The 5th Annual Mission Inn Festivals of Speed
In Case You Missed It STYLE EVENTS, NEWS & GOSSIP FROM AROUND ORLANDO By Riesa Pascal
The first quarter of 2017 is officially over, and that’s no April Fool’s joke! The year is swiftly passing by, so make sure you’re staying up to date on the most happening events in Orlando by sticking with Style Magazines. Here are highlights from the beautiful month of March, just in case you missed it! On March 1st, Walt Disney World Resort welcomed the vibrant season of spring with the kickoff of the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival. This year’s event runs until May 29th and boasts fun-filled exploration for every age and interest. Highlights include: Outdoor Kitchens offering delectable small plates and flavorful beverages, more than 70 world-renowned Disney-themed topiaries, vibrant gardens, flower towers, wildlife habitats, inspirational exhibits, seminars, how-to demonstrations and more. Every weekend, guests can also enjoy live entertainment at the Garden Rocks Outdoor Concert Series featuring throwback beats from fan-favorite bands. From March 4th-5th, the town of Windermere hosted the second annual Windermere Art Affair. The two day “Fine Art” show featured 60 incredible artist from around the United States and Canada. Guests enjoyed a sunny afternoon of live community entertainment, great jazz music, wine, beer, and delicious food as they shopped and strolled through the beautiful art work. The free, pet-friendly event was presented 18

by Isleworth and helped support both the artist and the Windermere community. Visitors were also able to stop by the Orlando Style Magazine table to pick up a complimentary copy of the new March issue! The first match at the new Orlando City Stadium was not the game you might have expected! On March 5th, players from Orlando City, Orlando Pride, and OCB faced off against 100 local kids to christen Orlando City’s new home. The children, ages 8-10, had the opportunity to experience the new stadium in an exciting way as they played two 20 minutes halves in which the pros showed off their skills while being severely outnumbered by some of their biggest fans. The match highlighted Orlando City’s ongoing relationship with the city of Orlando and its community. Admission fee for the event was a $10 charitable donation to the Orlando City Foundation. For nearly 40 years, Winter Park’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been a city staple, and this year proved to be no different! The 39th annual afternoon parade took place on Sunday, March 5th in downtown Winter Park and featured more than 75 participating units on a route that began at the Winter Park Golf Course and continued south down Park Avenue to Lyman Avenue. The celebration also included Irish music by Mike Daly and step-dancing at the main stage in Central Park with demonstrations by three Irish dance schools including Sarah Costello, Tir Na Greine and the Watters School of Irish Dance.
CITY NEWS
The tastiest event in Oviedo returned on March 11th! Taste of Oviedo offered visitors a wide array of local bites from restaurants, caterers, and food trucks. This year’s event featured over 30 participating vendors, a larger seating area geared towards local Oviedo restaurants and an expanded Kids Taste complete with bounce houses, a singing contest and many fun rides. Guests also enjoyed a number of live musicians and other performers that took stage and entertained all day long. Taste of Oviedo’s staple Citrus & Celery Cook-Off was once again a big hit as contestants were challenged to create dishes including either citrus or celery. This year’s event was sponsored by Air Flow Designs Heating and Air Conditioning. We’re all Irish on St. Patrick’s Day and on March 11th, the celebrations kicked off a few days early at Wall Street Plaza’s St. Practice Day Block Party! Attendees threw on something green and came out for great Irish food, unbeatable drink specials, fun giveaways, green beer, Leprechaun sightings and more including live music from Off Kilter, Irish Pipes & Drums, and DJ Jorge. Not to be outdone, Friday’s St. Patrick’s Day Block Party proved to be the main event as Orlando came together for the biggest and best St. Patrick’s Day Block Party in the city! The event featured 7 green venues and 2 green city streets in the heart of downtown. One of the nation’s oldest, largest and most prestigious outdoor arts events took place right in our very own backyard from March 17th19th! The 58th Annual Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival draws in more than 350,000 visitors and was ranked the #1 Best Fine Art and Design Show in the southeast. More than 1,100 artists from around the world applied for entry and an independent panel of judges selected approximately 225 artists to participate in the show and compete for 63 awards totaling $72,500. Named America’s Best Juried Fine Art Fair, the three-day event also featured show-stopping jazz, children’s activities and great food in Central Park and along Park Avenue in Winter Park. The Annual Seafood & Wine Festival is a signature Lakeridge Winery event that marks the beginning of springtime and the warmer weather. From March 24th- 25th, the beloved festival returned for its 9th year, much to the delight of all in attendance! Local Artists and Crafters were invited to display their work as guests enjoyed Lakeridge wine, beer, soft drinks and a variety of tasty seafood specialties. As always, the event also featured complimentary tours and tastings of Clermont’s favorite Winery in addition to fabulous live outside music and entertainment throughout the entire weekend. The 5th Annual Mission Inn Festivals of Speed showcased both vintage and contemporary vehicles of all makes and models for a weekend of luxury and speed! A tour of cars cruised throughout the winding roads of beautiful lake county on March 25th for Saturday’s Tour D’Elegance. On Sunday, the gorgeous vehicles were placed against the exquisite setting of Mission Inn Resort. The perfectly manicured fairway of the magnificent property proved to be the perfect host for some of the world’s most exotic supercars, American muscle, rare custom motorcycles, and countless other unique and exciting vehicles. Event proceeds benefitted The Tom & Kim Ruggie Family Foundation. Follow us on Twitter @OrlandoStyle or on Instagram @orlandostylemag to stay up-to-date on all Orlando events.

isney Springs is filled with fine dining. However, you cannot go to Disney Springs without paying a visit to STK Orlando. With a menu filled with fresh local food and a cool, energetic environment, it’s a perfect place to enjoy an unforgettable dinner. It will make any day during the week feel like a Friday night! Every morning, bread is made fresh for people to munch on while they wait for their food. For appetizers, guests can enjoy delicious dishes, such as the Burrata, heirloom tomatoes with an arugula puree and kalamate olive croutons, along with the creamiest mozzarella cheese. Or you can enjoy Lil Brgs, 2 mini burgers made with wagyu beef and a “special sauce” topped with a black sesame seed bun. STK’s Chef James O’Donnel has an amazing dinner menu. With a plethora of options, there is something for everyone. They even have gluten free and vegetarian dishes. For the meat lovers, the steaks will not disappoint. All the meat comes from cattle that are grass-fed, then corn-fed the last 3 months. The cattle are certified, which allows for ultimate consistency

and the highest quality marbled beef. And to make your experience even better, pair your steak with a Cabernet. For those seeking a lighter plate, you can order the Florida Grouper, which comes with mussels and chorizo in a sherry brown butter sauce; pair that with a Chardonnay (chef ’s choice!), and you’ll have yourself the dinner of a champion. What better way to end a great night than with dessert? STK has seven desserts to choose from. The Warm Baked Cookie, which is topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, is fantastic, along with Bag O’ Donuts or the Caramelito Bar. Honestly, they are all so delicious, it makes it hard to choose. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, it does. STK will soon be serving brunch starting in early April, so you can experience their excellent service and food all day! I can go on and on, but you’ll just have to go and see for yourself!

BON APPETIT
Ceviche de Gambas Paired Perfectly with Mar de Frades Albariño RECIPE 4 lbs Cooked Coconut Milk Shrimp 1 cup Coconut Milk 1 cup Spanish Onions (sliced very thin), Blanched 2 tbsp Minced Garlic 2 cups Roma Tomatoes, ¼” x ¼” Diced 2 cups Fresh-Squeezed Lime Juice 2 oz Fresh-Squeezed Orange Juice 1 cup Tomato Juice 2 cups Serrono Chilies Sliced Thin 6 oz Extra Virgin Olive Oil 4 cups Mango, ½” x ½” Diced 2 tbsp Salt and White Pepper Mix ¼ cup Chopped Cilantro Diced Fresh Jalapenos or Cayenne (to your liking)
METHOD Blanch shrimp in lightly salted water for 30 seconds, then shock them in ice water to stop the cooking process. Remove the seeds from the tomatoes. Dice into half inch pieces. Add both fresh lime and orange juice. Whisk and store in your refrigerator until you have the rest of your components ready to be assembled. Mix the peppers and tomatoes with chopped cilantro, garlic, tomato juice. Combine all ingredients and season with salt and white pepper to taste; stir well. Allow to marinate for at least thirty minutes; this will allow all the flavors to come together and the citrus will have time to cook the seafood. Serve with a salad, fried plantain chips or just by itself and enjoy! Tip: Aim to make the ceviche the same day you buy your seafood. We suggest the pairing of the Ceviche de Gambas with the Mar de Frades Albariño wine. This wine pairs perfectly with seafood. Its citrus flavor and crisp acidity pairs beautifully with any ceviche. 22

Oregon State of Mind In an
A conversation with Julia Jackson of Jackson Family Wines
By Dana Damato
W
ine isn’t just something that Julia Jackson enjoys with dinner, or on a night out with friends. It’s not something she just picks up a bottle of on her way home from work. For Julia Jackson, wine is a way of life. In fact, wine is life. Now, with the Jackson family owning 583-acres of land in Oregon, we had the opportunity to speak with Julia regarding the distinct terroir or Oregon’s Willamette Valley and how it differs from the other renowned Pinot Noir Regions.
Alongside Julia were panelists that included Eugenia Keegan (Gran Moraine), Craig McAllister (La Crema), Lynn Penner-Ash (Penner-Ash), Ryan Zepaltas (Siduri), Tony Rynders (Zena Crown), Julia Jackson (Proprietor of Jackson Family Wines) and moderator Gilian Handelman (Jackson Family Wines Director of Wine Education). So what makes Oregon the place to be for its Pinot Noir? Well, all would agree that it is all about the soil and having an understanding of mother nature up there in the Pacific Northwest. It’s also an ideal location for its clean, crisp and cool air, along with the influence that the soil has on the wine – the sedimentary soil and volcanic soil. Not only that, but Oregon’s Willamette Valley won the 2016 Wine Star Award for “Wine Region of the Year.” 24

Not only that, but Oregon’s Willamette Valley won the 2016 Wine Star Award for “Wine Region of the Year.” The Wine Star Awards are known as as some of the most influential in the entire wine industry. Each year since 2000, the editors of Wine Enthusiast recognize and celebrate individuals, companies and regions that have made exceptional achievements and contributions in the wine world. Other 2016 nominees for Wine Region of the Year included Champagne, France; Crete, Greece; Sonoma County, California and Provence, France. Being the Proprietor of Jackson Family Wines, Julia Jackson has worked across numerous areas at Jackson Family Wines. She is the middle daughter of Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke and is proud to play a major role in the rebrand of such family-owned international wineries, such as Arcanum, as well as Tenuta di Arceno. Over the last year Julia has been focused on venues within the country, including Santa Maria-based Cambria Estate Winery. The property holds special meaning for her family, as the first winery established after the 1983 launch of flagship brand Kendall-Jackson, and also for Julia Jackson, the inspiration for Cambria’s award-winning Julia’s Vineyard Pinot Noir. Being an artist at heart, Julia brings a highly developed aesthetic to her work, from redesigning websites for wineries to painting wine labels herself, to helping shape the look and feel of various brands. She’s a natural at it. Julia demonstrates grace and is soft-spoken, with a sharp mind for business. Julia was born in San Francisco in 1988, and has fond memories growing up of her father instilling lessons of hard work by making his three children pick and sort grapes in the heat while he explained the importance of maintaining a hard work ethic throughout life. Growing up, Julia worked at several of the family wineries, including those in France, immersing herself
in a language and culture that she continues to love. Her fluency led to teaching French to sixth-graders while an undergraduate at Scripps College, where she also did some modeling through several Los Angeles agencies. After earning a bachelor’s degree in studio art, she attended the intensive Summer Institute for General Management program at Stanford University. Post-graduation, Julia traveled to Bordeaux, France, where she learned about French sales and distribution and worked at the Jackson family-owned Château Lassègue. She had the opportunity to shadow Nicolas Seillan during meetings with the esteemed French négociant Mahler-Besse and learned about the global markets and the industry more in depth. Sometimes, she’d work 14-hour days, doing everything from picking and sampling grapes to working the sorting table, doing pump-overs, punch-downs and yeast-adds. Her stay in Bordeaux reinforced her desire to learn more about wine, and upon returning home she completed a Master Sommelier introductory course with her sister in Sonoma. Often times, Julia would travel with the international sales team to wine shows, including France’s VinExpo, and has learned first-hand the challenges and opportunities of reaching Asian markets through trips to China, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand. Julia believes that Jackson Family Wines is so much more than a family owned wine company. She’s states that they are risk-taking innovators with a strong belief that quality is paramount and that they will always be a family-owned wine company.

T
he first and most difficult challenge Ferrari always faces when it decides to develop a new model is to push the boundaries of its own achievements yet again. This challenge is made all the tougher when the task at hand involves designing a new 12-cylinder engine, the power unit that hailed the start of the glorious Prancing Horse story 70 years ago in 1947. On this occasion, intensive research and development focused on exploiting Ferrari’s wealth of track-derived engineering knowhow has produced a unique model designed to offer its drivers both benchmark performance across the board and the most riveting and rewarding driving experience possible. Whilst, of course, also guaranteeing the superb comfort on longer trips that is the signature of a genuine Grand Tourer berlinetta. Ferrari’s past is studded with just such cars, a long and illustrious list of exceptional models that have gone down in automotive history. The obsessive pursuit of the most seamless melding possible of state-of-the-art running gear with a harmonious yet edgy design from the ever-inventive Ferrari Styling Centre, has produced a near-perfect aerodynamic package. The 812 Superfast’s exceptionally futuristic, finely-honed lines also, however, clothe Prancing Horse power at its rawest, as an entirely new 12-cylinder engine of unprecedented efficiency and might was designed for the car. That engine’s output has been boosted by 60 cv compared to the F12berlinetta, so that it unleashes a massive 800 CV, making the 812 Superfast the most powerful and fastest roadgoing Ferrari ever built (with the exception, of course, of the mid-rear-engined, special limited-series 12-cylinders). The 812 Superfast thus ushers in a new era in Ferrari 12-cylinder history, in doing so, building on the invaluable legacies of the F12berlinetta and F12tdf. To make full use of that huge power and to guarantee perfect weight distribution, the car exploits a highly evolved transaxle architecture that couples a front-mounted engine with a rear-mounted transmission.
The 812 Superfast is equipped with leadingedge vehicle dynamics control systems and components. It is striking for both its highly innovative design and aero package, as well as its unparalleled handling. It is also the first Ferrari to sport EPS (Electric Power Steering). Simply put, the 812 Superfast is the new benchmark for mid-front-engined sports cars. And at its heart is the new 12-cylinder which has forged its character. Like all cars with Prancing Horse DNA, this new berlinetta delivers exhilarating feedback both on road and track, but equally promises exceptionally fluid handling and ride comfort that drivers will appreciate on longer journeys. The 812 Superfast, in fact, is aimed at clients that demand the most powerful and exclusive Ferrari in the range. They want a blisteringly high-performance car, but refuse to compromise on the kind of versatility that will allow them to thoroughly appreciate driving it as a 360-degree experience.

LUXURY
Homes & Lifestyles Abound
Luxury homes and lifestyles abound in the Central Florida region.
With the multitudes of lifestyle choices including lakefront, high-rise, beachfront, equestrian, golf community, amusement park and resort living, it is no wonder that the Orlando Central Florida market has become such a globally-desired locale. With this enhanced residential demand, increased international appeal and continued expansion, it is imperative to do your homework prior to selling or buying your luxury home. This includes researching and vetting a truly experienced and knowledgeable real estate professional. Work with an agent who not only understands the local market, but has a global network and is up-to-date with the needs and wants of those buyers. They should be able to create a vibrant marketing strategy to put your luxury home in the best light, and from that, be able to create a profile that identifies the target buyer for your property. It is also an increasingly global marketplace, so hire an agent who understands the highend client’s lifestyles and diverse cultural backgrounds. To that end, your agent should also be knowledgeable in high-end home

décor, design, appliances, technology, art, wine, dining,…for not only Central Florida, but most major world markets, as well. This global reach also means that it is an increasingly fast-paced and internet-driven marketplace. Thus, it is critical that your real estate professional is adept in digital market communications. For sellers these agents have an empirical skill-set whereby they strategically define and communicate with your target buyer. For buyers they have tactical ability and resources to pinpoint the property that speak to your luxury lifestyle demands. It should be noted that a large percentage of the luxury market home transactions fall into the ‘all cash’ category. Perhaps this is due to the housing market bounce back from the recession and the global economy bouncing up, as well. Regardless of the drivers, many high-value national and international clients see the Florida real estate market as a good place to invest and to celebrate their successes. Arm yourself with the right real estate professional to buy or sell your luxury property!

INCREDIBLE Celebrity Diets
By Riesa Pascal
Being a celebrity is no easy job, especially when it comes to maintaining a fit physique! Many celebs even turn to ridiculously extreme and dangerous dietary measures in order to achieve their ideal weight and health goals. If you’re not a celebrity, then grab some pizza and sit back as you enjoy this list of 10 incredible celebrity diets that you probably won’t be trying anytime soon.
BEYONCÉ KNOWLES: THE MASTER CLEANSE
Shortly after Dreamgirls was released in 2006, Beyoncé Knowles went on The Oprah Winfrey Show and shared her secret to losing weight fast for her starring role. The star’s big secret was the Master Cleanse diet which helped her to lose 20 pounds in just 14 days. Unsurprisingly, the all-liquid diet of cayenne pepper and lemon water became an instant sensation after Knowles’ interview was seen across the world.
DEMI MOORE: THE WEREWOLF DIET
Although she’s far more beautiful than a werewolf, Demi Moore has reportedly participated in the werewolf diet which encourages individuals to base their eating habits on the lunar calendar. Dieters on the plan can try a 24-hour juice fast during a full or new moon, or they can try the extended diet which adds a specific eating plan that corresponds to the phases of the moon cycle.
MARILYN MONROE: THE EGGNOG DIET
If you’re not a fan of eggnog, you may want to skip ahead to the next diet on the list! For Hollywood starlet Marilyn Monroe, a diet of raw eggs whipped in warm milk every morning helped her to maintain her knock-out figure. The recipe involved cracking 2 raw eggs into a pan of hot milk that was then stirred into a frothy breakfast beverage that would sustain her until dinnertime.
LAURA PREPON: THE HCG DIET
And the award for the most painful diet goes to… Laura Prepon for allowing herself to be stabbed with needles! Dieters on the HCG diet are injected with Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HGC), a hormone which occurs naturally in the human body during pregnancy. The hormone hasn’t been shown to have any real impact on weight loss and individuals on the diet must also stick to a 500-calorie daily food intake (which is way more likely to be the reason for any loss of weight loss).
REESE WITHERSPOON: THE BABY FOOD DIET
Many celebrities have been linked to this next diet including Lady Gaga, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston. The Baby Food diet is perhaps the most self-explanatory of the diets on our list. The simple plan encourages dieters to replace their first two meals of the day with Gerber’s baby food, followed by a health-conscious dinner. Unsurprisingly, experts argue that the diet does not provide sufficient nutritional value for an adult although many do agree that baby food offers certain health benefits.

CELEBRITY SOUP
MADONNA: THE BREATHARIAN DIET
Madonna has followed a variety of extreme diets over the years such as the macrobiotic diet, which eliminates all wheat, eggs, meats and dairy. However, trying the breatharian diet takes her “extreme diets” to a whole new level. The diet’s concept was born from breatharianism or the belief that humans can survive on sunlight alone. The diet—though limited in it’s length for obvious reasons—encourages individuals to sustain themselves with a salt and water soup concoction for optimal results.
ADRIANA LIMA: THE VICTORIA’S SECRET DIET
If I ever need an incentive to NOT be a Victoria’s Secret model, this would definitely be the one! Adriana Lima sticks to a restrictive diet all year long to maintain her stunning physique, but it’s her crazy pre-show diet that may come as a surprise. In the nine days leading up to a Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, Lima restricts herself to solely protein shake beverages with powdered eggs. Then 12 hours before showtime, the Brazilian beauty cuts out liquids all together! As much as I love Lima’s figure, I love food a lot more, so no thanks.
ASHTON KUTCHER: THE FRUITARIAN DIET
This may be one of the most dangerous diets on the list as it sent our next celebrity to the hospital! To get into character for his role as Steve Jobs in the 2013 biopic Jobs, Kutcher decided to try a fruitarian diet which was Jobs’ preferred diet for creative boosts. Followers of the diet believe that 75% of an individual’s daily dietary intake should come from raw fruit. Just one month into the diet, Kutcher ended up in the Emergency Room with an inflamed pancreas— yikes!
THE STRANGE DIETING REGIMENS OF HOLLYWOOD’S BIGGEST STARS VICTORIA BECKHAM: THE ALKALINE DIET
Former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham is a big fan of the alkaline diet which is a meal plan aimed at keeping your body’s pH between 7.35 and 7.45. In order to be alkaline-friendly, participating dieters need to follow an 80/20 rule of more vegetables and less grains and proteins. However, individuals will not be able to measure results by simply stepping on a scale with this diet! A urine test will be required in order to truly determine where the body’s pH balance levels are.
LADY GAGA: THE DRUNK DIET
Lady Gaga and her former boyfriend Lüc Carl have both participated in what they call the Drunk Diet. In 2012, Carl even wrote a top-rated book on the unorthodox diet. In fact, the tagline for the lighthearted memoir is “How I Lost 40 Pounds… Wasted.” The Drunk Diet is the humorous tale of Carl’s Rock ‘N Roll adventures and how he transformed a whiskey-and-5-A.M.cheeseburger lifestyle into a successful weight-loss regime.

DON’T MISS THE BEAT
WOMAN
DANGEROUS
Ariana Grande Live in Orlando “Whatever is fitted in any sort to excite the ideas of pain and danger… is productive of the strongest emotion which the mind is capable of feeling.” As this quote by philosopher Edmund Burke was written in 1757, we can guess it was not regarding the Dangerous Woman herself, Ariana Grande, but we would be foolish to overlook it as irrelevant. Ariana Grande has clearly shown herself to be skilled at making the mind capable of feeling—her songs have been socially inescapable for the past three years and each single she releases is more irresistible than the last. Currently on her highly-anticipated Dangerous Woman Tour, the singer has mastered the art of exciting the mind with ideas of pain and danger—pain for her competitors and danger for her addictive fans who simply cannot get enough of the vocal queen. Even her Dangerous Woman album cover creates an illustration of an elusive, girlish heroine that seems to double as a villain. A shiny set of black bunny ears atop Grande’s cascading hair and expressionless pout evokes an existential approach to the mere idea of danger. Everything innocent
about Grande’s aesthetic—her youth, tender falsetto, and slight frame—is juxtaposed with the dangerously intense nature of her artistry, which is perhaps the secret of the mystique in her danger; it is coyly hidden behind her candied grace and must be excavated to be understood. This album, which showcases the new and not-to-be-underestimated Grande, serves as an updated portrait of the maturing pop star. Before settling on a title, the album took its name from the opening track, “Moonlight,” a song that illuminates Grande’s delicate and emotive side. Still, Dangerous Woman proved to be the more accurate interpretation of Grande’s image as a whole; we see a woman who has redirected her femininity in a way that can be used as a window and a weapon—a window into her girlish sensibilities and a weapon of unexpected seductive power. With a killer vocal range featured in tracks like “Into You” and “Side to Side” that outshines nearly any of her contemporaries, Grande is no stranger to channeling her power in her performances, and she is easily
By Courtney Caggiano
well-versed in the art of show business beyond her years. This 2017 version of Grande is not to be confused with the doe-eyed teenage actress who made a name for herself on Nickelodeon. On the stiletto heels of her success from Dangerous Woman, Grande takes the Honeymoon stage as a more mature lady of song, a woman of identity and a master of femininity. Grande has found her feminine prowess in the delicate balance of baby doll vulnerability and coquettish strength. This enigmatic yet amorous charm is perhaps what makes Grande the Dangerous woman she claims to be—whether competing for attention or talent, one would only fail at any attempt to compete with her. On April 15th, Orlando welcomes the Dangerous Woman Tour at the Amway Center, featuring this poised and polished Ariana in all her glory—the new and improved, cutely-seductive songstress who has shattered any outdated preconceptions we may have had of the 23-year-old singer. Danger has never sounded so sweet.

ince winning the debut season of HGTV’s Design Star, David Bromstad has quickly become one of the friendliest and most recognized faces on the network. We recently had the pleasure of catching up with the brilliant designer and vivacious television personality during his participation in Capital One’s Banking Reimagined Tour. Riesa Pascal: You have been a key figure at HGTV ever since you won the debut season of HGTV Design Star in 2006. What was that journey like from TV contestant to renowned HGTV host? David Bromstad: It was all pretty much by accident, but a really good accident— really good! Being a contestant was probably one of the most intimidating moments of my career because you have the pressure, you have everything to lose, and you have nothing to lose all at the same time. I didn’t even think I was going to get on the show, but I got on the show. I didn’t think I was going to win though that was the goal and then I ended up winning. Now 10 years later—almost 11 years later—I’m right here. R.P: How did you get involved with My Lottery Dream Home? DB: I got a call from the network and they were like, “Hey, we got this great new idea for a show! It’s a real estate show and we know you’re a designer, but you’re an incredible host. We would love to have you do the pilot to see how you like it.” So I did the pilot and it was super fun. I’m helping people who won millions of dollars and I get to help them find a house! I get to go on the journey and explore what they do with their finances. It is super exciting to see how much of the millions and millions of dollars they spend on the house so it’s fun to be a part of that project with them. R.P: What is your favorite part of the show? D.B: Just meeting the homeowners for the first time. It’s so exciting knowing that they’re new millionaires and I won the lottery myself when it comes to this. To go from being a starving artist barely able to
make ends meet to having my own show on the network and having a very solid career, that’s my winning the lottery so I get to relate to them. R.P: What is the most popular request you receive? D.B: The one commonality that everyone has is that everyone wants to move back or stay with family. That is the number one thing that all of my homeowners ask...that we keep them in the area or move them to the area where they came from and where their family is. It’s really interesting. R.P: What is the weirdest “wish list” item you’ve ever encountered? DB: I think the weirdest item on the wish list was one we did in the Hamptons. He had just won 20 million dollars—a ton of money—and he wanted as many bathrooms as possible. I showed him one with like 6 bathrooms! It was ridiculous and he was like, “Okay. All right. Keep ‘em coming.” I was like, “You’re weird.” It was basically a tour of bathrooms, but when you got money you can wish for whatever you want. RP: What would your dream home look like if you won the lottery? DB: I’ve been living in Florida forever, but the mountains always call my name everytime I’m out there. I would have a beautiful, delicious home up somewhere in the mountains. Maybe near Aspen. Definitely a more cabin feel, nothing too big, not too small. Definitely all the amenities that I love and of course I would have to have my studio to the back or something like that. A nice big property, but nothing too extravagant. Just mountainy. R.P. I’ve heard you refer to yourself as the “Granddaddy” of HGTV! Why is that? DB: I classify myself as the Granddaddy of HGTV because I am the oldest talent on there! Not the oldest, but the longest lasted talent. There might be bigger names out there, but I’m the most consistent.
RP: Any new, exciting projects coming up? DB: I can’t really mention what’s developing, but it’s really exciting and super fabulous! I’ll give you a clue: I’m going to beautifying your home in every way. That’s all I can say, but it’s coming soon this fall. As for whether I’ll be on TV next year and the year after that, I don’t know. I just love that it lasted this long and whatever comes next comes next, but so far so good. We’re moving and grooving. We’re doing another season of My Lottery Dream Home for at least another year. It’s the life of an artist. Living year to year, never knowing what’s going to happen next, but I always enjoy the process. R.P: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? D.B: The days I’m not traveling are usually very few and far between, but I’m usually relaxing at my condo in South Beach and going to the gym and that’s it. I’m super lazy. I’m a couch potato and I love to watch TV because I’m always moving. People are like, “Ooh you live in Miami, that’s so fun!” I just basically sleep there because I’m only home about 2 days a week. RP: You recently partnered up with Capital One on their Banking Reimagined Tour. How has that experience been? DB: What they’re doing is bringing banking really close to everyone’s everyday life! I wish they would’ve had that when I was a starving artist and figuring what I could do with money to make the best out of my life. They’re here to help young people and it’s in a non-traditional form. You’re not going into a bank, you’re just hanging out with people who are giving you really solid advice. They’re not trying to get you to come in and sign up for an account. They’re just there to give you advice because they care and it’s great for everyone to take advantage of that. It’s the new age of banking.

While it belongs to a rarefied category where art is integrated into the guest experience, The Alfond Inn stands alone as the only hotel in the United States that serves as the extension of a fine arts museum. At every turn, from the entrance lobby to restaurant, lounge and corridors, The Alfond Inn was designed as the imaginative extension of the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College. The hotel maintains a rotating display of cutting-edge works from The Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art, a nearly 300 piece collection of contemporary art that was assembled and donated to The Cornell Fine Arts Museum by Rollins alumni Barbara and Ted Alfond. “The Alfond Inn is a new paradigm for museum spaces,” says Ena Heller, the Bruce A. at Rollins College, one of the country’s most lauded liberal arts colleges. “It expands the horizons and the definition of a museum, and takes the museum off campus.” The Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art fosters a deeply synergistic relationship between the museum and the hotel. Art at The Alfond Inn is woven into every guest’s experience, thanks to inventive installations of works that can range from the eye opening to the provocative. For guests who want to explore the collection, there are audio tours, walking tours with a curator and even monthly happy hour events that combine the best of the collection and the hotel. Professors from Rollins College often hold classes within the hotel. The collection, conceived as a “visual syllabus” for the college, includes paintings, photographs, sculptures and mixed-media works by established and emerging artists, and is overseen by private curator Abigail Ross Goodman and Amy Galpin, Curator of the Cornell Fine Arts Museum.
The collection itself has been “curated with a point of view, highlighting the values of a liberal arts college,” says Ena Heller, “such as critical thinking, embracing different perspectives and art as a portal to knowledge. It’s part of Rollins College’s global citizenship mission.” The Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art fits squarely into Winter Park’s century-old dedication to the fine arts. In addition to the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, the city is also home to the Polasek Museum and the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, which has the world’s most extensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Weekly Art Tours are complimentary and conducted every Sunday at 1 p.m. A Happy Hour Art Tour takes place on the first Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. Audio guides are available at the front desk. For reservations and information call 407-998-8090, or visit the website at www. thealfondinn.com.

“Opening the blinds in every room during the daytime will allow for sunlight to naturally illuminate your home and feel bright.”
Spring Easy ways to brighten your home this
By Samara Halperin
As springtime rolls around, your home may be in need of a small makeover. Maybe you have dark furniture and need a way to brighten up the room, or maybe you need to find ways to utilize more natural light. Here are some easy ways to brighten your home for spring. The beginning of spring comes with the reputation of lots of rain, flowers blooming and, well, spring cleaning. Start of your home’s spring transformation with a deep cleaning and a fresh start to the season. That alone will make your home feel revitalized and new. Although Florida does not require heavy bedding in the winter, try trading out your traditional bedding for a thinner quilt blanket in your bedroom. A light color would make your room feel brighter since it takes up such a large space. The easiest change you can make for a spring feeling is to get a bunch of citrus scented candles and air fresheners to put throughout your home. The sweet scents remind anyone of beautiful weather and are likely to make you crave something fruity. For your kitchen, the easiest way to prepare for spring is to focus on the kitchen table. Add a floral

table cloth, which will draw anyone’s eye who walks into the room. If your chairs have changeable cushions, replace those with a more fun color or design as well. New seat cushions are also a great option for redecorating your patio furniture. Another easy thing to do is get a bunch of plants to put all over your home. Every room can feel tropical. The flowers will grab anyone’s attention and also smell amazing. Plants are a great way to prepare your home for spring. Let’s not forget about the subtle adjustment you can make in your home that will make a bigger difference than we usually think. Opening the blinds in every room during the daytime will allow for sunlight to naturally illuminate your home and feel bright. This is such a small thing to do but can have a really large overall effect on the rooms in your home. Making these small, easy changes to your home is sure to make it feel ready for the spring season. Your home will be clean and colorful and smell amazing. There is no better time to have an excuse to cover your home in florals and fun patterns.

OUR TOWN
rlando City Soccer Club will be starting off the season with a kick. A brand new stadium and a sold out opening match... life doesn’t get any better than that! The new stadium was part of the proposal for Orlando City to join the Major League Soccer in 2015. It has a capacity of 25,500, which is more than what was envisioned in the initial plans. This is due to the success of the club during their first season in the MLS, attracting crowds of over 30,000. The extra capacity was created by filling in the corners and adding an extra tier to the South Stand of the new stadium. The stadium is the first MLS stadium with a standing section and roofs over all four stands. Around twenty percent of the stadium consists of premium seating, including 31 suites. The construction of the Club’s permanent home began back in October 2014, located just a few blocks away from the Amway Center arena and west of downtown Orlando. The project was announced to be 100% privately funded by Orlando City SC. The opening-game sellout was very much expected as limited tickets went on sale to the public. Season ticket holders accounted for 18,000 of the 25,500 seats in the new downtown stadium. Not only are tickets to the opening match completely sold out, but so are single-game tickets for the home game against the LA Galaxy on April 15. Clearly, the fans are thrilled and can hardly wait for the new upcoming season. Demand for the tickets is high as the Lions captured a crowd of more than 60,000 people to their 2015 and 2016 season openers. Orlando City played at Camping World Stadium for the last two years, which had a capacity that allowed the Club to continue selling tickets right up until the day of the match. As more tickets were sold, the Club opened additional sections of the football stadium. With the new stadium, buying habits will need to change. There is an urgency to buy tickets sooner rather than later.
Seats in the staduim in honor of the Pulse victims
The Lions will play a total of 17 MLS home games at the new Orlando City Stadium. To add to the excitement of the new season, Orlando City SC launched a free mobile app for all members and non-members of the Club’s membership program. All fans must download the mobile app as the Club transitions to a paperless ticket system for the 2017 season. ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM |

The Lake Nona Town Center will also be full of shops including department stores, other chains, and boutiques.

The Lake Nona Town Center will also be full of shops including department stores, other chains, and boutiques. This location will definitely be a great, new place in Orlando to spend the day. For those traveling from a far distance, a Marriott Courtyard and a Residence Inn are being built at the town center, so people will also be able to stay in this new, beautiful location. This town center is 3.8 million-square-feet of open-air lifestyle and entertainment center, which will cost about $780 million.
Tavistock is also building a bowling alley, brewery, and medical fitness facility at this center. As mentioned earlier, this construction is happening in two phases. Phase One is a $70 million project that is already in the works and includes two office buildings, some restaurants, and hotels. Tavistock has partnered with Steiner + Associates, which is a Columbus, Ohio-based company that is in charge of leasing and retail planning. They also serve as a development services partner for the town center. The Lake Nona Town Center is intended to be a place where locals can enjoy their city even more and tourists can gain an even greater experience. The center is located about eight miles from the Orlando International Airport and two miles from the USTA Lake Nona Campus, so there are commonly people from all over the world in this specific part of Orlando.

IRS Targets Offshore Accounts Again in 2017

In February 2017, the IRS issued a public statement identifying its “Dirty Dozen” tax scams that will be targeted this year. Figuring prominently among the Dirty Dozen are offshore bank accounts, assets and income that are not reported to the IRS. The emphasis to crack down on offshore accounts is a part of the government’s attempts to keep track of American citizen’s and resident’s financial dealings. This effort started in the 1970’s with the Bank Secrecy Act. Since that time, government scrutiny has expanded to cover every type of financial dealing. The result is a continuing governmental attack upon financial privacy. The most recent government efforts have been directed against offshore accounts and assets. In order to force Americans to disclose their offshore financial activities, criminal laws now require yearly disclosure of offshore bank accounts and other types of assets to the Department of Treasury and the IRS. The latest of these disclosure laws is the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) which requires individuals to file a disclosure form with their yearly tax return. This form requires the reporting of foreign accounts and additional types of assets. In addition, FATCA requires foreign banks to report American account holders to the IRS. To force compliance with the laws concerning disclosure of offshore income, the government has taken the “carrot and the stick approach”. The stick is to charge a person criminally with failure to make the necessary financial reports. The government can both incarcerate a person for failing to make reports and impose civil penalties which can be as high as 50% of the highest value of the offshore accounts per year. The Department of Justice, in coordination with the Department of Treasury and the IRS, has brought criminal prosecutions against individuals whose offshore accounts were not disclosed by filing the necessary forms. The carrot to get people to report offshore accounts and income started in 2009. The
carrot began with a program known as the Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program (OVDP). The OVDP has changed over time since it was first implemented. In its current version, a penalty of 27.5% of the highest value in the account over the last 8 years must be paid. The OVDP also requires filing 8 years of amended tax returns which report all offshore income and require payment of unpaid taxes, interest and a 20% penalty on the unpaid tax. In addition, all other informational returns such as the FBAR, which reports the offshore accounts as well as the FATCA forms, must be filed. In return for successfully completing the OVDP, a person will not be prosecuted criminally. Another carrot is now available called the Streamlined Program. This program requires filing amended returns for the prior 3 years and paying the tax, interest and 20% penalty on the previous unpaid taxes. In addition, a 5% penalty of the highest value in the offshore accounts during the last three years must be paid. A person who resides outside will not have to pay the 5% penalty. The Streamlined Program, however, does not provide immunity from prosecution. The IRS also requires a sworn statement that the person did not act willfully in failing to report the offshore accounts. If the IRS believes that the person did know that they had to report the offshore accounts, that person could be subject to criminal prosecution and incarceration. The chances of a person with offshore accounts being discovered by the IRS continues to increase since FATCA requires foreign banks to report to the IRS its American account holders. The IRS will continue to vigorously pursue those with offshore unreported accounts and assets which are one of the “Dirty Dozen” tax crimes.

The anxious wait for Florida’s medical marijuana legal framework
F
loridians have been preparing to participate in the marijuana market long before the passage of Amendment 2. The burgeoning cannabis market is a dream situation for investors and entrepreneurs: from lawyers to doctors to investment bankers, there isn’t one sector of big business in Florida that doesn’t have its hungry eye on how to participate in the cannabis space. But while lawmakers meet this session to establish the legal framework for Amendment 2, Florida is left without legislative guidance on the issue leaving investors guessing on how to best employ their capital.
There are a number of ways to “read the tea leaves” on how Florida will treat the new MMJ market (“MMJ” is medical marijuana), but potential cannabusiness entrepreneurs would be doing themselves a disservice by structuring business plans, employing capital and otherwise making material decisions based on assumptions of how the law will be implemented. No doubt that investors want to get an early start on MMJ market participation, but the absolute most important and preliminary question has yet to be answered by Florida legislators: will Florida require a vertically integrated system similar to the existing Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act of 2014, or will it adopt a version of the “Brandes Bill” (SB 614), which aims to repeal Florida’s existing MMJ law and establish four separate functional licenses: cultivation (grow), processing (plant into oil), transportation and retail (dispensaries)?
By Mark NeJame Contributor Vanessa Louise Braeley
74
| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
A vertically integrated system requires a market participant to cultivate and produce their own product, process it (whether they intent to sell flower or oil or both) and sell it at its own retail dispensary store. The only independent component to a complete vertically integrated system is the testing labs: the product will have to be tested and approved by an independent laboratory for pesticides and other potential hazardous substances (a list of which has yet to be compiled by the Florida Department of Health or Florida Department of Agriculture) prior to
providing it to consumers. The vertically integrated system is hotly contested: the start-up capital required is tremendous and limitations on supply, strains, genetics and competition is more apt to occur. The Brandes Bill proposes a framework similar to states like Oregon and Washington: entities will have the ability to operate as a licensee for one particular sector of the industry – four separate licenses available in total - so a grower can focus solely on growing without being required to operate a processing lab and a retail store. Of course, if a company wants to vertically integrate, they are able to do so. Proponents of the multiple-license system enjoy the concept of increased competition and easier access to the marketplace; as always, the time, place and manner in which the licensees can operate will be left to local governments, which temper industry saturation and exposure of unwanted MMJ businesses in school zones and residential areas. The opportunities available in the cannabis space are so abundant it boggles the mind. Regardless of your position on the matter, whether you believe in legalization, decriminalization, medicinal or recreational – or don’t believe it in at all – chances are your industry will be affected by Florida’s new MMJ framework, so keep your eye on Tallahassee closely this year and take advantage of this historical movement!

SPOTLIGHT ON REAL ESTATE
Florida Land Deals &
THE ROARING 1920’S
I
t was the roaring twenties. We had just overcame the end of world war 1. Many families were now traveling via automobiles. Americans had disposable income and a desire to get rich. Word quickly spread about speculators making big money in Florida on land deals. The Florida government was investing massive money on infrastructure and facilities to attract future residents, tourists and land investors. Florida quickly became one of the greatest economic opportunities in the country. The quality of life looked really glamorous to those who would read about life in Florida. Millions of Americans were captivated about this amazingly attractive opportunity. Credit was easy to obtain if you had a decent job. Newspapers would write glamorous stories about land investors who doubled or tripled their profits within months. In 1922, newspapers were full of real estate advertisements, with the Miami Herald being one of the largest publications due to its enormous land advertisement section. This must have been an extremely effective marketing method because records show that two-thirds of all Florida real estate was sold by mail to speculators who had never even stepped foot in Florida.

Speculators were making big money and the market was going crazy with rapidly rising prices. As acquisition costs went up, profit margins became tighter and tighter. Before long it was 1925, and the negative stories about speculators buying worthless swampland sight unseen were starting to spread. The IRS started scrutinizing deals, publications like Forbes Magazine started warning people to be careful because the Florida real estate boom was one big scam. You know what happened next? The bubble burst and countless speculators lost their life savings and then some. Sound familiar? That’s right, it sounds eerily similar to the modern real estate boom and bust. In the real estate boom of the 2000s, Florida experienced a similar market. Here’s a sales report for two different pieces of land that were playing “musical owners”. Both of these were single family lots.

They put cattle on the property so that they would only have to pay minimal agricultural property taxes. On 10-09-2015, I sold the property for $5,100,000. I have a client I represented as a buyer’s agent for 11 acres in the attractions area. In less then a year, we have 5 acres of the 11 acres under contract for the price the buyer paid for the entire 11 acres. I have another client who bought 180 acres in 2007 for almost $2,000,0000. That property is worth somewhere between $10,000,000 $15,000,000 today. Land has turned many property owners into very wealthy individuals. However, for as many amazing successful land deals that I can show you via public records, I can show you just as many ugly stories that have brought investors to their knees. Please take this warning seriously. Do not try to invest in land or any real estate without the help of a competent Real Estate professional who can show you a successful book of business with verifiable transactions. If your agent is not willing to show you this, Run Forrest Run! For more information on any of these deals, please contact me at hooman@MastersRealty.com or 407-985-4621

These RED FLAGS can cost you some GREEN. By Nancy Hecht, CHP®, AIF® Certified Financial Planner™
W
ho doesn’t love tax time! So many colorful thoughts and words come to mind. Here are some RED flags for you to avoid so you do not spend any extra GREEN:
1. Making simple errors can cost you such as math errors or forgetting to include necessary forms. 2. Inflating you charitable deductions can raise the red flag. Being charitable is wonderful on so many different levels but remember this, many charities report donations received to the IRS. Also, if your charitable donations seem significantly higher than those in your tax bracket, you will attract attention. 3. Not facing the fact that it is a hobby, not a business. If you cannot be profitable 3 out of 5 years, your business may be deemed a hobby by the IRS. Take your time while compiling your tax return so you keep all of your green.

Shelby has been in Real Estate for over 16 years and is currently one of the top five producers at Olde Town Brokers for the last six years. A Florida native, Shelby was born and raised in Cocoa Beach. She attended the University of Central Florida where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Communications, and then her Masters in Liberal Studies from Rollins College. Her passion for people and her profound interest in the art of negotiation has led Shelby to a successful career in Real Estate. Shelby draws her inspiration from the three pioneers who were instrumental in the revitalization of Downtown Orlando – Steven Patterson, Steve Kodsi and Phil Rampy. Shelby focuses her attention mainly to the parks of Orlando – Thornton Park, Delaney Park, College Park, Baldwin Park & Winter Park – and says she truly enjoys connecting with people, where every day is different and every transaction is a new challenge. Playing a major role in generating substantial growth to the Downtown Orlando area, Shelby was deeply involved in the development of three instrumental high-rises from the ground up. She
contributed to the growth of ZOM Residential where she was the head leasing agent for The Waverly on Lake Eola. Subsequently, she moved on to work for Historic Creations and was the Director of Sales for the luxury condo buildings The Sanctuary and Star Tower. Shelby’s compassion for people and her community has contributed to her overall success. She is a huge supporter of local artists and the local art scene – serving on the Downtown Arts District Board (DAD) for six years. She is also a Circle Member for the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center and has been on the Runway to Hope committee where she assists local children and their families who have been impacted by pediatric cancer for the last four years. Shelby describes herself as enthusiastic, energetic and a hard worker. She was given the nickname “Penthouse Shelby” because she has sold most of the penthouses in the Downtown high-rises. When she is not running the Downtown Orlando Real Estate scene, Shelby enjoys surfing, bowling, traveling, and most of all, spending quality time with her two adorable pugs, Joshe and Sake.

Our beloved event has been named “Best Charity Event” a combined total of thirteen times in its seven-year existence by the Orlando Business Journal, Orlando Magazine, and Orlando Style. Runway to Hope was also the recipient of the Award for Excellence in Fundraising by a Non-Profit Organization from the Association of Fundraising Professionals and Mark and Josie NeJame were honored to be awarded “Outstanding Philanthropists” in 2014 on National Philanthropy Day. In association with their Spring Fashion Soiree, Runway to Hope hosts a Bash Weekend for over 150 models to come celebrate at Bloomingdale’s Orlando and pick their outfit to strut their stuff on the runway! Our core
team, committee members and amazing volunteers create these special days, giving the children and their families a much needed and well-deserved time away from hospitals, doctors, treatment, medicine and the other challenges they often endure on a daily basis. Bloomingdale’s and their immensely kind-hearted staff not only open their doors to more than 150 children and their families, but they also generously donate the outfits to each child so they will feel and look their best on the night of the Spring Fashion Soiree. This year, Runway to Hope’s Bash Weekend will be take place on April 1st and 2nd at Bloomindale’s Orlando at The Mall at Millenia. The Runway to Hope Spring Fashion Soiree is the organization’s signature fundraising event of the year. The highlight of the evening is an inspiring and heartwarming fashion show featuring more than 120 incredible children, ages 2 through 18, who are currently battling or overcome pediatric cancer. The kids walk hand in hand with national and local celebrities. In addition to the fashion show, guest will have the opportunity to bid on auction items as well as to dine on gourmet food prepared by the renowned chefs at Rosen Shingle Creek. These events create a moment in time when cancer does not take center stage in the lives of these young children and their families. If you would like to donate to Runway to Hope or to volunteer at one of our events, please visit the website at www.runwaytohope.org for more information.

BEST FRIENDS
PET BENEFITS
It’s no question that pets are a big part of our lives and tend to paw their ways into our hearts. Not only do they affect us emotionally, but physically as well. Here are just a few of the health benefits pets can provide.
How Pets Improve Our Health By Christina Anzalone
MOOD BOOST Our pets have a way of grabbing our attention and helping us de-stress from the worries of our everyday lives. Even if it is just for a few moments, watching your goldfish swim laps, petting your cat, or watching your hedgehog run on his wheel, engaging with your pet will lower the level of the stress-hormone cortisol and will raise the level of the feel-good chemical serotonin, improving your overall mood.
COMPANIONSHIP Pets can become our best friends and provide us with emotional support that is unconditional, helping us to relax and get through stressful situations. Pets also encourage more outdoor activities and socialising; your dog will typically want to explore and say hi to people and other pets walking by, in return encouraging you to also say hi and interact, leaving isolation and loneliness in the dust.
BETTER PHYSICAL HEALTH Pet owners have better levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, lower blood pressure, and a lower risk of heart disease, due to increased physical activity. Pets provide us with opportunities to strengthen our bones and muscles without us even realizing it. Lifting your cat off your laptop counts as a weight-bearing exercise, as does walking your dog.
RESPONSIBILITY Pets can give our lives new meaning and purpose, but they also come with great responsibility. Caring for a beloved pet can help provide a sense of motivation and a daily routine, which can help ease symptoms of depression and enhance overall well-being.
