PUBLISHER’S NOTE

> After all the finger-pointing, tongue-wagging and personal attacks back and forth, we finally managed to have another presidential election. The voters have spoken loud and clear and we offer our congratulations to president-elect Obama for a resounding victory. Although the congressional balance of power didn’t change very much, we sincerely hope that the next four years will be productive and gridlock-free, enabling our politicians to work more closely than before in stimulating the economy and bringing us back onto the path of prosperity once again. This holiday double issue contains a nice selection of last minute gift offerings and might be the last chance to get your shopping done. Remember to moderate your consumption of all those wonderful and enjoyable things in life so that you don’t become depressed after indulging too much. Our special report: ‘Healthy Holiday Thoughts’ will help in guiding you back to your ideal ‘look’ and keep you on the path to realizing those New Year’s resolutions. Check out our fantastic “Sinners” photo shoot along with our wonderful “Winter at the Ballet” photo shoot which will definitely get your ‘holiday spirits’ started! So, enjoy a controlled mix of eating, living well and enjoying life every minute of each day...hopefully with ‘Style’! As we approach the end of this year we are reminded that charity should be in our hearts and even the slightest gesture in sharing with those less fortunate than we can be very meaningful. With that in mind we ask that you dig down and make a contribution, no matter how slight, to a fund raising organization of your choice, perhaps a local church or synagogue, so that others may have the opportunity to celebrate joyously this holiday season with their children and other loved ones. For all those who make a living operating a business, Orlando Style will always be on your side by providing you with the pinpoint advertising assistance needed to reach your markets. With our results oriented business messaging design and professional graphics layouts, along with our proven record of success, we will continue working full speed ahead to ensure that your advertising dollars will be well-spent. This is our primary goal and rather than attempt to impress with a ‘ridiculous sales pitch’ other publications offer, we pride ourselves on hard-nosed production of the best possible advertisements to fill your specific business model requirements, with minimal cost outlay. As always, we are especially grateful for your feedback, recommendations and critiques and are eager to receive your comments on the ‘Beauty & Brains’ profile and the many others presented throughout the year.Who knows, you might just find your appreciated comments published in our “new readers” section. From all of us here at Orlando Style, we would like to wish every one of you and your family, a very happy holidays and a wonderful New Year! Shanah Tovah, Bonne Année, Gutes Neues Jahr, Akemashite Omedetou Gozaimasu, Antum Salimoun, Feliz Año Nuevo, Buon Capo d’Anno, Naye Varsha Ki Shubhkamanyen … and to all, a Peaceful and Happy New Year!<

WEALTH MANAGEMENT

Preparing for the “Fiscal Cliff” By Wesley C. Reed, CRPC® Read more at: StyleToMe.com

STYLETOME.COM

WEALTH MANAGEMENT

> A phrase that has found its way into our daily lexicon this year is “fiscal cliff.” It refers to a combination of Federal government spending cuts and expiring tax cuts that many fear could be a serious drag on the U.S. economy beginning at the start of 2013. These scheduled spending cuts and tax increases have many economists concerned that if nothing is done legislatively to change current plans and avoid the cliff, a recession could result due to consumers having less to spend just as government reduces its own spending. CHANGES ON THE DOCKET

The estimated impact on the economy comes from a combination of expiring tax cuts, new taxes and automatic spending cuts. The most direct effect on individuals has to do with tax changes. They include: • The expiration of the “Bush era” tax cuts of 2001 and 2003. Most notably, this would raise income tax rates for most people to levels that were in place prior to 2001. It would also change other tax provisions, including an increase in taxes on dividends and capital gains, a decrease in the child tax credit, and a reinstatement of phasing out some itemized deductions and personal exemptions for higher income individuals. • The end of the “payroll tax holiday” that reduced an individuals’ Social Security taxes by two percent. • Less benefit from the American Opportunity Tax Credit, which provided up to $2,500 per student in credits (a dollar-fordollar reduction in taxes) to offset qualified higher education expenses. In 2013, income limits to qualify for the credit – which will revert back to its prior name, the Hope Scholarship Credit – are lowered and the maximum credit is reduced to a projected $1,950. • The loss of the “patch” that allowed many middle income Americans to avoid exposure to the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT). • A drastic reduction in the exclusion amount for the estate tax from $5.12 million per person to $1 million, and an upturn

in the highest maximum estate tax rate, from 35 percent to 55 percent. • The implementation of a higher income threshold to qualify to deduct out-of-pocket medical costs as an itemized deduction. Currently, expenses valued at more than 7.5 percent of Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) can be deducted. The threshold rises to 10 percent in 2013 for most taxpayers. For those at least age 65, the higher threshold phases in through 2016. • The addition of new taxes that will apply to individuals earning higher incomes as part of the new Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The effect these changes would have on individuals over the next year could be dramatic, anywhere from several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars or more in increased taxes for 2013 depending on individual circumstances. The other aspect of the fiscal cliff is scheduled federal government spending cuts that are due to take hold in 2013 – another potential blow to the economy. These include: • $110 billion in spending cuts agreed to in the Budget Control Act of 2011 • $26 billion from the expiration of emergency unemployment benefits • $11 billion in reduced Medicare reimbursements for physicians

::

In the meantime, be prepared for what may come. It appears likely that the amount of taxes you pay in 2013 will be higher than what you paid in 2012. Whether it will be as severe as what exists under the currently scheduled changes remains to be seen. Despite this, changes to the national economy or your personal financial circumstances will not occur overnight. The tax changes would take place all at once, but from a personal perspective, they would have a gradual effect. It could be dramatic over a year’s time, but it will be applied in smaller increments such as through wage withholding. Even the government’s spending cuts will be implemented gradually over the year. The situation will create challenges and should not be taken lightly. But it also offers the opportunity to carefully review your finances, everything from day-today spending to investment strategies and tax planning, to determine the best way to limit the impact on your own bottom line and move forward with your best financial strategies. <

Nobody can be certain what policymakers in Washington may choose to do – or not do – to limit the potential economic shock created by the confluence of events that have led to the fiscal cliff. They could vote to alter the planned changes to tax laws and government outlays in order to temper the impact. However, any action in that regard may not occur before late this year or into 2013.

Third Annual Festival of Magic - Francesco Fiore, Kostya Kimlat & Sven Bode

> October ended in a flurry of magic and spectacle as the Third Annual Festival of Magic took over Central Florida October 25th-31st. Eight venues including,The Citrus Club, The Abby and the Grand Bohemian Orlando hosted an evening of magic featuring 15 different world class magicians. From rabbits pulled out of top hats to outrageously fanciful illusions, hundreds of guests enjoyed their fill of majestic wonders to last them at least until the next year when the festival rolls around again. We could not end the month of October without a Halloween spectacular. On October 26th more than 2,000 guests found plenty of ghoulish activities to bite their teeth into at Guy with Ties Philanthropy’s latest bash, Costumes for a Cause. Vain Nightclub in Downtown Orlando hosted the ghostly event. The main goal was to scare up donations for a good cause benefiting two charities, Rescuing Animals in Need and Dark Horse. Halloween gave all a chance to become someone else for a night, however, November 4th-5th brought a whole new meaning to transforming ones look as The Makeup Show descended upon Orlando at the Peabody Hotel. Makeup artists, face and body

painters, hair stylists, photographers, models, hair and beauty students, costume and theater, fashion stylists and all others who are a part of the Beauty, Fashion and FX world gathered for the two day event featuring educational workshops and industry networking. A virtual glam squad of nearly 20 top industry artists, including Johnny Lavoy, AJ Crimson, and Nick and Brian Wolfe, worked their makeup magic sharing insider secrets at seminars, forums and hands-on workshops. More than 2,000 took part in celebrating the art of makeup and making “The City Beautiful” that much more gorgeous! The Makeup Show put Orlando’s best face forward and on November 11th it was time to put our best foot forward…in the name of fashion. The Third Annual Fashion Walk Orlando took center stage at the Heaven Event Center where the main objective was to showcase the best male and female designer clothes in the world. This year, Fashion Walk Orlando joined forces with R.C. Couture to showcase 250 of the finest brand name designers in clothing, accessories and jewelry. Models sashayed down the runway walk adorned in Gucci, Roberto Cavalli, Oscar de la Renta and other iconic designer fashions ranging in sizes from 4-16.

It was a night of fabulous fashion for a cause as a portion of the proceeds went towards the H.O.P.E Foundation, an organization that feeds hundreds of families around the Seminole County area. Attention: Pearl seekers! If the world is truly your oyster, then hearing names like Mikimoto, Akoya and South Sea speaks volumes. During October-November, the language of “Pearl” could be heard all throughout The Mall at Millenia as the jewelry store, Mayors was transformed into an art gallery of pearls. The store served as the featured venue for the 2012 Exclusive Tour of the World’s Finest Cultured Pearls. Pearl enthusiasts sipped Champagne and dined on delectable sweets while viewing the extensive collection of Tahitian, Golden and White South Sea pearls showcased alongside Japanese Akoya and more. It was a pearl seeker’s paradise right in our backyard.< Know of a Not-To-Be Missed Event? Do Tell!

ORLANDO NOW

Tis the Season for Holiday Wishes & DREAM(ers) A Look into the Controversial DREAM Act. By Mark NeJame Nayef A. Mubarak, an attorney with NeJame Law, contributed to this article Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> The season for holiday parties, New Year’s resolutions, and wish lists has arrived, and the campaign is finally over. Regardless of our political affiliations, we are all hoping for a continued economic recovery and productive sessions of Congress. Key issues need to be resolved in the next 4 years, and hopefully immigration reform is on the agenda, specifically the DREAM Act. The election has made us all familiar with the terms “DREAM Act” and “DREAMers,” but what exactly is the DREAM Act and who are the Dreamers? In a nutshell, the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act, is bipartisan legislation designed to assist those “undocumented” or “out-of-status” persons who were brought to the United States as minors. It has a long legislative history. It was reintroduced in 2009, with revisions, additions, and omissions. Benefits and requirements vary between versions of the bill, but generally the undocumented youth would be eligible for a 6-year-long conditional path to citizenship that requires completion of a college degree or two years of military service. Eligibility is not easy; the following rigorous requirements need to be met: • Have proof of having arrived in the United States before age 16. • Have proof of residence in the United States for at least five consecutive years since date of arrival. • If male, have registered with the Selective Service. • Be between the ages of 12 and 35 at the time of bill enactment. • Have graduated from an American high school, obtained a GED, or been admitted to an institution of higher education or served in the military. • Be of good moral character. DREAM Act opposition states that the Act is “amnesty” for all illegal aliens and immigration law violators. The opposition states this would be positive reinforcement for those who have violated immigration laws. However, the Act assists only those children who were brought here to US, and not their parents. Furthermore, the Act disqualifies those individuals with certain criminal history.

STYLETOME.COM

So, who are the Dreamers? Well the obvious definition is those individuals who were brought to the U.S. as minors, are currently in the US, obtained or in the process of obtaining an education, and are positive contributors to society. However, Dreamers are much more than this – Dreamers are valedictorians, role model citizens, enrolled in ROTC programs, and much more. Dreamers are simply in pursuit of the “American dream.” Many of them don’t have a memory of their ancestral home, their home is the U.S.A. They consider themselves “American” and would serve our country if given the opportunity. Dreamers we have encountered are great students, have scholarship opportunities to college, and it is not until the young Dreamer applies for college that he or she learns the devastating truth of their immigration status, or lack thereof. The DREAM Act initiated as a bipartisan bill, as there was a clear need for a remedy for those young non-citizens injured by the actions of others. The Dreamers are not just suffering from the acts of their families, but also from the consequences of a flawed and outdated immigration policy. The good news is the DREAM Act is not a dead bill. The President has stated immigration reform is one his top priorities. On June 15, 2012, the Secretary of Homeland Security announced that certain people who came to the United States as children may request consideration to receive deferred action for a period of two years, and would then be eligible for work authorization. This program is called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or “DACA.” The President stated “It makes no sense to expel talented young people...simply because of the actions of their parents, or because of the inaction of politicians.” DACA was more than a political stunt; we have seen positive results, tears of joy, and the smiles of a few Dreamers in our office. It is highly recommended that any individual who may qualify for DACA contact an attorney immediately. Unfortunately DACA is only a temporary solution and simply offers a temporary fix to a long-standing problem. Hopefully the President is able to rally congress to pass the DREAM Act and do what is right.<

“It is around this time of year where you can identify most with the big names and faces of Hollywood. Their main priority, just as ours, is spending time with their loved ones and ringing in the New Year as a family.” By Alyssa Thomann

> Autumn has come and gone, the leaves have turned every hue of orange and fallen along the ground. Winter has taken its place, bringing blankets of white, velvety snow to prepare us for the holiday season. The front lawns are filled with the laughter of children making snowmen. Or at least that is what people tell me the changing of the seasons is like. I suppose I may have embellished the reality of that scenario a bit. But, a Florida girl can dream right? It would be nice to see the changing of the seasons around here this time of year… however, no matter what the weather or where you are, the holidays are about one thing- spending time with those you love and cherish most. It is around this time of year where you can identify most with the big names and faces of Hollywood.Their main priority, just as ours, is spending time with their loved ones and ringing in the New Year as a family. Let’s see what our stars have in store for the holidays. You might be surprised at just how similar your holiday plans may be. This year will mark the first holiday season Heidi Klum and Seal spend apart. Project Runway host and German supermodel, Heidi Klum had been married to British R&B artist, Seal, for seven years before their split in April. However, do not let this get you down, Heidi lovers, because Heidi Klum will not be lonely this Christmas. This 39-year-old supermodel mama has already got her holiday planned out and it consists of her four beautiful children and that magical place called Disneyland. Heidi has revealed that this year the holidays will be spent here in the states in their home in Los Angeles. She plans on getting a big Christmas tree for her and her children, Henry, Lou, Johan and Leni, as well as possibly taking a trip to Disneyland, the happiest place on Earth. Klum has always wanted a big family and with four children, she was lucky

enough to get one. Heidi explains how precious her family is to her and for the holidays the most important thing is that they are all together. We can also expect a new face to be joining the Klum family this Christmas. Long-term bodyguard turned boyfriend, Martin Kirsten, will also be participating in the family festivities for the first time this year. It seems that taking on the first post-split holiday season this year should be a breeze for Heidi with such a loving family around to get her through. While we are on the topic of big families, we must not forget about the JoliePitt family. They’re Christmas plans will be spent together in their home across the pond, in London, UK. Both stars are busy working on several new films this holiday season bringing them to reside in London for the time being where Brad can film upcoming films, World War Z and The Counselor and Angelina can stay busy shooting her star role in Disney’s, Maleficent. The star couple has made a pact to never work at the same time. Therefore, while Angie is on location working, Brad is at home tending to the house and children. It seems his alone time playing Mr. Mom has helped him cook up some ideas for Christmas this year. Brad Pitt has asked British celebrity chef and dear friend, Jamie Oliver, to help him prepare dinner this Christmas for Angelina and their six children. The two have been friends since Brad was married to Jennifer Aniston, and he is still a close friend of the family that Angelina likes very much as well. Jamie Oliver is a British celebrity chef, restaurateur, and media personality. He is known for several food-oriented television shows, such as The Naked Chef, Jamie’s 30 Minute Meals and Jamie’s Dream School, as well as numerous cookbooks and most recently his campaign against serving processed foods in national schools. He is a strong advocate of healthy diets

and he strives to improve poor cooking habits. It seems he is the perfect candidate to help the Jolie-Pitt family enjoy a delicious Christmas dinner at home. Brad reportedly has already asked and received cooking lessons from Jamie after realizing that taking out six children for dinner every night was no longer fun but more like a mission. He concluded that it would be much easier for him to cook for them in the comfort of his own home. However, it seems the personal cooking lessons were not a success and Pitt is still struggling with the culinary arts. No worries though, papa Pitt, Jamie Oliver has come to your rescue. Christmas dinner is saved!<

> Lexus has revealed a new high performance sports coupe concept at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney, the LF-LC Blue. A further development of the model which became the sensation of the Detroit motor show earlier this year, it swaps that car’s burning red exterior for a lustrous Opal Blue finish, inspired by the natural base colour of the Australian gemstone. The LF-LC combines advanced technologies and materials with an organic design that points to styling cues that will influence future Lexus sports models. The concept in particular pioneers use of lightweight carbon fibre and the next generation of Lexus’s industry-leading full hybrid powertrain. The experience and in-house capabilities Lexus has gained in the development of the LFA supercar have directly benefited the creation of the LF-LC, notably in the successful marrying of carbon fibre and aluminium alloy materials in its construction to achieve a light body mass.

It provides an ideal platform for the next generation Lexus Hybrid Drive system. Dubbed Advanced Lexus Hybrid Drive, it features a new, high-energy battery pack designed to deliver to greater power from a unit that is smaller than those used in Lexus’s current full hybrid model range. The full petrol-electric system in the LF-LC produces a maximum 500bhp (372kW), more power than any other Lexus hybrid. LF-LC Blue demonstrates what the future may hold for sports cars. Lexus has been synonymous with hybrid power, superior build quality, comfort and reliability; with the LFLC it now reinforces its design and technology credentials. The concept hints at what is to come from Lexus, which is now actively studying how it can engineer and build a vehicle like this in the future. <

CHEF PROFILE

> When celebrity Chef Donna Scala rides her Vespa over the rolling hills of Napa Valley she loves taking a deep breath of Mother Nature‘s perfume.Trees plump with fruits and vines ripe with grapes permeate the Northern California air and work like an aphrodisiac on Chef Scala’s culinary libido. “It inspires me! The smell of food is inspirational. It’s in your blood, you know, it’s kind of like… like… it‘s just…” She doesn’t finish the sentence but flashes a bright smile that lights up her eyes as she stares at the ceiling, probing her brain for the right words. Her cheeks even start to flush and I could feel a subtle energy radiating from her thoughts. It almost looked like she was thinking back on the last chapter she read in 50 Shades of Grey; I thought to myself, “I’ll have what she‘s having.” “When you inundate yourself with food,” she continues, “and you’re surrounded by all the flavors and smells, you just breathe it in and it comes out of your pores.” Yes, Scala is definitely in love, and food is her amour; it adds zest to the main course of her life and a passion like that isn’t easy to sum up in a few words. To truly understand it you have to experience it, and the closest you can get is at La Luce restaurant at Hilton Bonnet Creek Resort.

Chef Donna Scala

Her Secret Ingredient for Success STYLETOME.COM

To walk into the restaurant is to walk into the creative recesses of Chef Scala’s cultivated mind. She handpicked and designed everything. The cozy down pillows that line the booths were made by a friend in Sonoma, California. The long, brown walnut tables add a communal touch reminiscent of old-fashioned Italian dining. The paintings on the wall are done by famous artist Wade Hofer, and there’s even chalk artwork… drawn on actual chalkboards! An artist comes in several times a year to sketch out brilliant Italian-style sceneries that hang in the restaurant for a few months. Then - in what could be considered a moment of unfathomable insanity - the artist wipes the chalkboard clean of his masterpiece and starts over on a new one. Obviously Chef Scala loves to change things up. But perhaps the most stunning aspect of La Luce’s design is the floor-to-ceiling windows that face west. La Luce is Italian for ‘the light’, a fitting name for a restaurant that has front-row seats to the daily sunsets that cast stunning pink and orange hues over Orlando.

“You HAVE to be curious!”

If this much attention to detail is paid to the décor, you can only imagine what Chef Scala does with the food. She grew up in the restaurant and hotel business so her experience and training began in her childhood and blossomed into a full-fledged calling by the time she was 28 years old. She had dabbled in fashion and retail but it wasn’t until she moved to France to study the culture that she realized food was in her blood. She splits her time now between her restaurant Bistro Don Giovanni in Napa Valley, California, and La Luce in Orlando where her head chef of 20 years, Alberto Navarette, uses his remarkable talent to lead the kitchen team.

By Jessica Sanchez Read more at: StyleToMe.com

“I love to feed people,” Scala says, “which is why I’m in the industry, it’s fun to know your customers and their palette.

BUON APPETITO

People traditionally come in and like to eat the same thing so I often send new dishes to their table on the house. My idea of public relations is to feed people and give some of the food away just to introduce them to new flavors.” And those flavors are an exotic culmination of decades of traveling to every corner of Italy and taste-testing the different regional infusions. Together with her Italian-born husband she spends several weeks a year traveling and studying her craft. She samples the pesto in Genoa, the truffles in Piemonte, the tomato sauces in Naples, and even the buffalo mozzarella from the Isle of Capri, flavored by the fertile soil of Mt.Vesuvius.

“The butterscotch is made with real 12-year-old Macallan scotch and the pudding is a thick, creamy mixture of heavenly sweetness that even a choir of doe-eyed cherubs couldn’t replicate in a song. I’m not exaggerating”! “The hard rock that was formed from the ashes of Mt.Vesuvius actually has moisture in it allowing plants and grass to grow,” Scala explains. “The volcanic soil is rich with nutrients giving anything that grows on it a slightly different flavor. The cows that graze on the grass also produce milk that is flavored with a tanginess similar to goat’s milk.” During her travels Scala also met a mother and grandmother who run a family-owned pasta factory using only organic flour found in the village of Poleo, Italy. It is from here where she imports all of her pasta, making it quite literally pasta you can’t get anywhere in Orlando.

“Hilton and Waldorf are great because they allow me the privilege of importing pastas and spices from Italy so that people can be exposed to different ingredients,” she says, but while some items are shipped from overseas, the majority of La Luce’s kitchen is stocked with goods from local farmers. She is a big proponent of organic eating, believing that putting healthier foods in your body will - gasp - make you healthier.

WOOD-N-APPLE (DRINK)

“That’s kind of my platform, to get back to food being respected, not processed and with no chemicals. People should feel good when they walk out of here. They shouldn’t feel swollen, puffy and sluggish the next day; I really do think that has to do with eating processed food.” It is obvious that Chef Donna Scala’s love affair with food is a passion that will always kindle in her heart and because of this she has been wildly successful as a chef and a restaurant owner, but she says the secret ingredient to her success is simply curiosity. “You HAVE to be curious!” she exclaims. “I want to read every article, I want to know everything that’s going on in the world of food. For instance, I want to know what they’re doing with tofu right now, I just want to know! I‘m curious about where it comes from, how it is today and how many people digest it…” And had I not stopped her we would probably still be discussing all the fascinating aspects that make up tofu. Her thirst for culinary knowledge leads to newly inspired dishes at La Luce all the time which is why she changes the menu several times a year to match the seasons, even though technically, we don’t really experience the seasons in Florida. But one thing that never changes is their signature dessert: Butterscotch pudding! It is so popular it even has it’s own Facebook page. If you don’t leave room for this you are missing out on one of life’s greatest pleasures, the recipe of which is a closely guarded secret. The butterscotch is made with real 12-year-old Macallan scotch and the pudding is a thick, creamy mixture of heavenly sweetness that even a choir of doe-eyed cherubs couldn’t replicate in a song. I’m not exaggerating! La Luce® at Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek 407-597-3600 14100 Bonnet Creek Resort Lane, Orlando, FL 32821 www.laluceorlando.com <

Holiday Thoughts By Megan Hyde Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> With another Thanksgiving come and gone, it is important to maintain a sense of thankfulness into the next month. Many days are spent in chaos, as more back-toback holidays lie on the horizon and it may be easy for peace on earth to evade you.We all are guilty to get ahead of ourselves and become consumed by the anticipation of more times to eat, drink, and be merry. It’s quite simple to find yourself running around babbling about finding that last item you just know Uncle John has to have. Or you get halfway through ‘your most successful shopping excursion yet,’ to realize you haven’t had a decent meal since Thanksgiving because you just can’t slow down long enough to do so. Neither scenario is exactly ideal. Though tough, it’s important to really embrace healthy lifestyles this time of year, since there will be plenty of times that are going to be absolute madness, without your consent. Now this isn’t to say you should not enjoy bringing delight to those you care for, you just don’t want to find yourself incoherently stumbling into a new year vowing ‘next year they’re all getting gift cards to Target’! You don’t want this run, shop, scream, claw, crash, burn and sleep it off method, not this year; there are far better ways to keep your happy holiday momentum going without having to lie sprawled out on grandma’s living room floor, watching intensely for the last reaction of the awesome gift you waited in line 17 hours for. Let’s cover a few tips to ensure holiday happiness versus holiday hatred. The days leading up to the holidays is about pace, endurance and again, maintaining a

STYLETOME.COM

thankful attitude. A great way to not get too far ahead of one’s self is to not overindulge too soon. This means, there is not really a strong enough reason to live off of pumpkin spice lattes trying to convince yourself the pumpkin is contributing to your daily serving of vegetables. Try to stop for a sandwich at the coffee shop too; Starbucks even has pre-made Bistro Boxes in all varieties and each are rated very well on proper serving size. This will allow sense to be added back to your mindset before you hit the next presale. When you have a balanced meal, you think straight and can count how many stocking stuffers you really need. Food is obviously a very big deal during the month of December. Everyone you know seems to have that special recipe they only cook/bake/stuff/roast this time of year. Naturally, because of thinking you’ll never see this person again or their infamous cheese truffles, we tend to overdo it. While indulgence in moderation is perfectly acceptable, creating yet again a new approach to food group balance is not the best choice one can make. Be mindful of this when Susan at work brings in the fifth tray of yogurt, chocolate balls. Just because they’re in the break room when you are, try to limit the amount you fit into your mouth. Less is more. Leading in closer to the happy days, it’s a good idea to adhere to the same practices that are helpful to prepare for Thanksgiving feasts. Everything from eating smaller portions that are veggie and protein heavy; keeping up healthy workouts and stretching, possibly yoga; and drinking plenty of water are all great ways to ensure you don’t

find yourself wishing away the existence of mashed potatoes after the initial sit down to a holiday meal. As for when the big day arrives, it’s time to show your appreciation and understanding of how to maintain your ability to not slide under the table in a ball with your knees at your neck. Number one suggestion here is simple: don’t push it. When you start to fill full from even appetizers, depending on your traditions, walk away. In fact, as long as you’re moving still, go for a walk. Get out and go; your good cheer to listen to Aunt Linda and the reasons she loves Pilates will be refreshed once around the block. Resting is important as well to the success of any holiday event. It is a good idea to cat nap and rejuvenate for 20-30 minutes to become restored for other aspects of the day. Once the last dishes have been washed and put away, the stockings are flat and ready to be rolled up to be put back in the attic, this is a great time to possibly incorporate new traditions into your yearly routine. Find a board game, chase the young kids outside in an old-fashioned hide and seek moment, or simply sit down with your niece and learn how to make those knotted bracelets she gives out each year. Finding something like these ideas will create different memories and new insight for a new year. Happy holidays to all and to all a good season! <

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW

When Foreclosure Follows Divorce By Steven D. Kramer Read more at: StyleToMe.com

“Divorce on its own can be a harrowing experience; facing a foreclosure lawsuit with your former spouse can be equally traumatic, especially if it is unexpected.” > At the conclusion of a divorce, most individuals expect a measure of closure. However, many people find themselves back in court, fighting a foreclosure lawsuit on a home they do not own, alongside the last person they probably want to see- their exspouse.

Marital Homes are usually the greatest asset and the greatest liability at stake in a divorce. In good times, dealing with the marital home is much easier than in the current real estate market. Generally when a home has equity, divorcing couples may either sell the home and divide the profits, or they may refinance the home and remove the other spouse from the note and mortgage. In the current housing market where many homes are underwater, couples have limited choices when dealing with the marital home in a divorce. Couples cannot simply sell the home, because they would owe money at the closing. Couples also are finding it is very difficult to refinance a home that is underwater. At present, in many divorces one spouse will quit claim their interest in the marital home to the other spouse. Perhaps out of wishful thinking, denial, or simply bad legal advice, many people hope that by executing a quitclaim deed and surrendering ownership in the home to their spouse, they will be relieved from liability. Unfortunately for homeowners, when a bank sues for foreclosure, the bank is not interested in how a divorce settlement panned out, or whose name is on the deed, the bank is interested

STYLETOME.COM

in collecting money. The bank attempts to collect money by filing foreclosure and forcing the sale of the home at auction. After the auction, the bank may pursue borrowers for a deficiency judgment, which is the difference between the amount of the loan and the value of the home. Because the bank will pursue anyone obligated under a note regardless of a divorce or settlement, unsuspecting individuals often find themselves facing foreclosure after divorce on a home they neither live in, nor own. Many divorce settlements require the spouse receiving the property to refinance the property in their name alone, thus releasing the other spouse from future liability. While refinancing is a promising idea, the reality too often is that refinancing is simply not an option because of a variety of factors. Some of the factors that prevent refinancing include the house being underwater, or the borrower’s credit score or income being too low. When dealing with an upside down property, couples should examine other options or create contingencies that will trigger automatically in the event that the house cannot be refinanced. One option to deal with an upside down property is requiring the parties to engage in loss mitigation like a deed-in-lieu of foreclosure, where the bank accepts a deed in lieu of foreclosure and releases the parties from some or all liability. Another option is requiring the property be listed for short sale. In a short sale, the bank generally accepts less than is owed on the property at

sale. Property owners should never close on a short sale without understanding their liability to the bank following the sale. In the event that the bank pursues a foreclosure on the property, another type of loss mitigation is a consent judgment. In a consent judgment, the bank generally releases the parties from liability and obtains an in rem judgment, which is a judgment against the property itself rather than the borrowers. The parties should also address potential tax liability relating to any debt forgiveness by the bank. Divorce on its own can be a harrowing experience; facing a foreclosure lawsuit with your former spouse can be equally as traumatic, especially if it is unexpected. This trauma is avoidable by working with an experienced attorney and planning ahead. Planning ahead insures against devastating surprises, reduces the opportunity for future conflict between spouses, and provides contingencies to protect against future liability. < Steven D. One of the most memorable impacts I have had has been with a loyal client of mine. He first came to me looking for advice on a retirement plan and group insurance for his employees. I was able to create a custom plan that covered everything including establishing a 401(k) plan and selecting group health, disability and life insurance for all of his employees. The plan I selected not only benefited his employees greatly, but also benefited him as a business owner. Being an independent financial advisor, I was able to use products and services from a variety of different companies. The benefit of selecting an independent financial advisor is that we can choose the companies we want to do business with, which in turn assures that my clients will get the products and services that make the most sense for their unique situation. In 2011, this particular client had an offer to sell his business. He sought me out immediately to assist in negotiating the terms of the sale. Upon the sale of the business I had the opportunity to work hand and hand with this gentleman and his family to create a retirement income strategy and secure an estate plan for his assets and family. < Actual investment results may be more or less than those shown. SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW

DUI - BY MARK L. HORWITZ

> The holiday season is upon us with celebrations, parties, and alcohol. Hopefully, the festivities will not include a DUI. The need for a designated driver is especially important at this time of the year.

An arrest for DUI is serious. The first conviction is a misdemeanor and a 6 month loss of your driver’s licence. If a driver refuses the breath test, it is a 1 year suspension. A third arrest for DUI within 10 years is a felony. Breath testing is a widely used method to determine the alcohol level of those suspected of DUI. Florida uses the Intoxilyzer 8000. Law Offices of Mark L. Horwitz, P.A. 17 East Pine Street Orlando, FL 32801 P: 407-843-7733 F: 407-849-1321 mark@mlhorwitzlaw.com www.mlhoriwtzlaw.com

constant temperature of 34 degrees centigrade. Studies have shown that breath temperature can vary by over 4 degrees. Test results will not be accurate unless the person’s breath temperature is 34 degrees centigrade. The longer a breath is held in the lungs, the warmer the exhaled breath will be. Every degree above 34 degrees, of the exhaled breath, causes the breath alcohol content to be overstated 6.5% by the Intoxilyzer 8000. If the breath is even 1 degree above 34 degrees centigrade, the Intoxilyzer 8000 may incorrectly indicate that the person is over the legal limit and therefore, DUI.<

Recent research has raised questions about the accuracy of the results of the Intoxilyzer 8000. Questions arose because the breath test is based on the assumption that a person exhales at a SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

Deep vein thrombosis, also known as DVT, is a medical condition resulting from formation of a blood clot within a fairly large vein in the body. They typically form in the veins of the pelvis, thigh or lower leg, but can also develop in other parts of the body. If left untreated, deep vein thrombosis may result in significant health complications and possible death. Pulmonary embolism occurs when a deep vein

thrombus breaks free and travels to the lungs where it can obstruct blood flow and can be fatal. Signs and symptoms of DVT can include pain, swelling, tenderness and discoloration of the affected limb. Deep vein thrombosis is a medical emergency. It can however be silent and go undiagnosed. DVT is known to affect frequent flyers and travelers due to prolonged periods of immobility while sitting in a car or an airplane. The risk of developing DVT during travel is low. However, the risk increases if you are sitting for more than three to four hours at a time while driv-

ing or flying. You can lower your risk of travel associated deep vein thrombosis (DVT) by a few simple precautions: • Get out of your car and walk around at intervals during long drives. • Walk in the aisles if you’re flying, riding a bus, or taking the train. • Stretch your legs and feet while you’re sitting; this helps keep your blood circulating in your calves. • Wear compression stockings while travelling. <

> In previous issues we have discussed a variety of dental treatments. Implants are the buzz word for replacement of missing teeth in many patients. As simple as it sounds to screw or place an implant in ones jaw and then place a tooth or teeth into that implant or implants it is critical that attention to detail be followed. Teeth can be lost for many reasons. Whether it is due to decay, injury, age or structural defects, when a front tooth is lost, your smile just isn’t the same. In the past, the only option for replacing a missing tooth was a bridge or dentures, both of which were often uncomfortable and not esthetically pleasing. Dental implants are now a successful and predictable method of replacing lost teeth. In fact, dental implants are so close in appearance to natural teeth that even the front teeth can be replaced with superior esthetic results.

Because a dental implant will replace your tooth root, the bone is better preserved. With other restorations, some of the bone that previously surrounded the tooth begins to deteriorate. In the long term, a single implant can be more esthetic and easier to keep clean than a bridge or a denture. The dental implant consists of three parts: the titanium screw, an abutment (the connection between the crown and the implant) and a crown (the new tooth). During the first treatment, your periodontist or oral surgeon will insert the screw and place a temporary. After about three months, your general dentist will place an abutment and attach a permanent crown to the implant. The entire process is minimally invasive and most patients experience little or no discomfort.

Here is an example of the team effort at work in providing function and optimum esthetics for our patient.

DON‘T MISS THE BEAT

> “Bruno Mars is a 13-time Grammy Award nominee whose debut album has been certified 39x platinum worldwide, has sold over 45 million singles worldwide, and has over 1 billion views on YouTube.” Well if that’s not an impressive way to start off your biography, then I don’t know what is. These opening words of Bruno Mars’ official “About Me” are especially amazing when you consider the fact that Mars’ is just 25 years old. He has reached an incredible amount of success at such a young age and with the upcoming release of his second studio album, it’s clear that he has no plans of stopping. On December 11th, Mars releases Unorthodox Jukebox and shows the world just how much fun “untraditional” can be. The multitalented singer, songwriter, producer and musician we know as Bruno Mars was born Peter Gene Hernandez in the beautiful island of Hawaii on October 8, 1985. His father nicknamed him “Bruno” at the age of two because of his resemblance to professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino. It was clear from an early age, that Mars’ had an incredible passion and talent for music. He was just a toddler when he began impersonating Elvis Presley on stage alongside an uncle and with the help of his musical family, Mars was regularly performing on stage nightly by the age of 4. Soon he proudly claimed the title of world’s youngest Elvis impersonator. Mars’ was a hit in his hometown and the locals loved to watch him perform, but they weren’t the only ones benefiting from these shows. These nightly performances helped Mars’ to further develop his passion for performance and music. He had all the right ingredients for success and after graduating high school, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dreams of building a career as a performer.

Doo-Wops & Hooligans birthed four mega-hits and was called “nearperfect” by Rolling Stone. The album won Mars’ numerous awards and in 2011, he was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people

Not long after, Mars co-founded The Smeezingtons, a songwriting-production team and began writing hit after hit song for various artists including Cee-lo’s record breaking “F**k You” and the summer 2010 hits, “Billionaire” by Travie McCoy and B.o.B’s “Nothing On You.” In addition to lyrics, “Billionaire” and “Nothing On You” also featured vocals by Mars’ that further helped his push for a career as a solo musician. All that pushing finally paid off in October 2010 when Mars’ released his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans.

in the world. The success of Doo-Wops & Hooligans reached far wide and opened up many other opportunities for Mars’ career such as a photo shoot spread for GQ Magazine and multiple songs featured in the hit TV show “Glee.” Mars’ even created the hit song “It Will Rain” which appeared in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 movie. This track became Mars’ 11th top 10 single, but Unorthodox Jukebox is sure to bring him many more. In early October Mars released “Locked Out Of Heaven,” his first brand new single from the new album and it didn’t take long for other stars to begin praising the addicting song. Desperate Housewives’ Eva Longoria admitting that she became “obsessed” with ‘Locked Out Of Heaven’ after its release. Probably Mars’ most greatly appreciated words of praise came from none other than “Born This Way” star Lady Gaga who sent this noteworthy tweet:

@BrunoMars Locked Out Of Heaven is one of the best pop songs in ages. You killed it.” With the songs release, October became quite the busy month for Mars’ and it ended with him hosting and performing for Saturday Night Live in New York City. On SNL the “Lazy Song” star not only got to make millions laugh at his comedic skills, but he was also able to perform “Locked Out of Heaven” live for the first time and unveil a brand new song, “Young Girls,” which comes straight from Mars’ highly anticipated album. Bruno Mars thinks you’re amazing just the way you are and we think he’s pretty amazing as well. He’s come further in just a few short years than most musicians will ever come in their lifetime. We can’t wait to see where Mars’ career will lead him in the future. Maybe he’ll return to the big screen where he made a cameo appearance in

Honeymoon in Vegas at just 4 years old as “Little Elvis.” Wherever he decides to go, Bruno Mars has the looks, the charm, the style, the talent and most importantly, the drive to get there. For now it seems he’s sticking to music, which he knows and loves best and we’re perfectly okay with that. You can be one of the first to grab Unorthodox Jukebox when it hits shelves on December 11th.<

Happy Yappy Holidays! By Jake White, SPCA of Central Florida Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> It’s time for the holidays. Putting lights on your home. Hanging bulbs on your tree. Lighting candles. Giving away toys. Decorating your home. Eating and drinking with friends and family all night long. Regardless of your holiday plans, remember to make your holiday festivities healthy – for your family, including your pet. Over the last 75-years, the SPCA of Central Florida’s low-cost clinic in Orlando and Sanford has had many very interesting holiday related medical cases of pets that had too much holiday cheer. “Blackie,” a 95- pound black Labrador was cruising through his apartment prior to a party. Trays of food, drinks and candy were placed throughout his home. Fortunately, it was discovered early in the evening that an entire tray of chocolates was missing. Blackie would soon be OK, but only after suffering from a physical exam and a noxious 2-day diarrhea.

“Over the last 75-years, the SPCA of Central Florida’s low-cost clinic in Orlando and Sanford has had many very interesting holiday related medical cases of pets that had too much holiday cheer.” STYLETOME.COM

“Phoenix,” a 5-year-old domestic longhaired feline was having tummy troubles. Everything that Phoenix would eat would return within 15 minutes. A physical exam and an X-ray soon discovered that Phoenix ingested 22 strands of Christmas tree tinsel. “Lizy,” a 12-pound, 2-year-old, miniature pincher was almost lifeless. She was lethargic, without appetite, and was dehydrated. Lizy spent three days in our medical clinic recovering, went home, and returned in two days with the same symptoms. Her owners exam-

ined the whole house and found nothing that could have caused the problem. When Lizy came home the second time, they discovered the problem. When Lizy went outside to “go potty,” she would eat the beautiful red poinsettia leaves on the porch. Here are a few other holiday goodies that could potentially become “coal in your pet’s stocking”: • Tree water • Tree needles • Holly • Mistletoe • Amaryllis and Christmas cactus • Batteries • Broken decorations • Potpourri and potpourri oils • Plastic bags from toy boxes • Bread dough • Coffee and espresso – anything with caffeine • Macadamia nuts • Alcohol If you think you might have a poisoned pooch or pussycat, call the Animal Poison Control immediately at 888-4ANI-HELP. Vow to make next year a better year! While planning your parties, take the time to schedule your annual Veterinary check-ups or to have your pet spayed or neutered at the SPCA of Central Florida at 407-351-SPCA (7722). Vines Grille & Wine Bar Owner Dimitri Karabinis By Jennifer Marcus Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Orlando is synonymous with tourist attractions and theme parks, but what really brings character, charm, and a hometown feeling to this city are the little café’s and boutiques on Park Avenue in Winter Park, the historic views of Thorton Park and the tastes of Restaurant Row in Dr. Phillips. Amongst one of the restaurants on the Row is Vines Grille and Wine Bar, an establishment that has been treating the residents of Dr. Phillips and fans from afar a satisfying taste experience since 2003. Owner Dimitri Karabinis conceptualized the idea for a cozy, old-Chicago feel jazz bar and restaurant ten years ago and created a space in Fountains Plaza on Sand Lake Road where locals could come to enjoy a fine dining experience in a casual atmosphere. He’s hit the nail on the head. Karabinis grew up in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and began his career in the restaurant industry at a young age working in some of the restaurants his father owned. When his father decided to move to Sarasota, FL in 1990, Karabinis decided he would tag along and see what Florida had to offer. Sticking to restaurants, he opened The Lakefront Restaurant, serving casual American cuisine, in Sebring, FL and then sold it several years later to open Savannah’s Steakhouse in Haines City. He spent the next 10 years working here before selling it to evaluate what he truly wanted to do in his life. During this time, Karabinis traveled the world and developed his passion for wine taking an interest in the different flavor profiles, tasting the characteristics, and inquiring into the different regions for grapes and varietals. “I read as much as I could, tasted as much as I could, and learned as much as I could on as many wines as possible,” said Karabinis.

PEOPLE ::

It wasn’t until he stepped into a restaurant while traveling in Chicago that he really knew which direction to go in. This restaurant was part jazz club and part steakhouse with an “old, chic feel” and exactly the fresh approach to the restaurant scene Karabinis was looking for in Orlando. “That’s when I got my inspiration,” he said. “This is what I want to do I thought.” So back to Orlando he went to open Vines Grille and Wine Bar, a place that would soon stand out from the rest. From the outside,Vines Grille and Wine Bar gives the appearance of your typical classic restaurant. But from the moment you walk in, the feelings of comfort, coziness, and casual sophistication rush at you. The dark rich wood, brick walls, and quiet lighting create a warm and inviting space and the 14-foot floor-to-ceiling wine cabinets and 50-foot bar are sure to impress. But it’s the bill of fare that is a complete revelation. Ranging from the freshest of seafood to the highest quality of beef, the impact on your tongue is stunning. Vines Grille and Wine Bar offers only prime cut steaks emphasizing their focus on quality. The Australian Waygu beef donned with exotic mushrooms and truffle butter will have you thanking Karabinis and his team for opting into this prime beef program. “At times it has been hard to bring in consistent cuts of the top meat, but we have never compromised quality. We seek out the best available.”

in Orlando. Vines Grille and Wine Bar has close to 850 labels and thousands of bottles of inventory. Everything from the big names to the smaller boutique wines, Karabinis has tried to create a list that has a broad variety of wines. And with his extensive research, he is surely someone we can trust when offering suggestions and when developing a comprehensive wine inventory. Karabinis has traveled throughout Greece, Italy, France and to vineyards across the United States. His favorite wine country? “I prefer Napa Valley because of its climate, the beauty of the area, and the vineyards. It’s my dream to wind up there one day.” This expertise in wine has led to the restaurant winning the 2009, ’10, ’11, and ’12 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence along with having one of the most decorated and extensive lists in Central Florida. Winner of OpenTable Diners’ Choice Awards for ‘Top 100 Wine Lists in the United States.’ The list of winners is derived from more than 5 million reviews submitted by OpenTable diners from more than 15,000 restaurants in the country. Hailed ‘Best Restaurants for Great Steaks’ by Orlando Sentinel Food Editor Heather McPherson. Winner of Orlando Style Magazine Readers’ Choice Award for the ‘Best Wine Selection’ in 2009, ‘Best Happy Hour Ever’ in 2011 & 2012 and ‘Best Piano Bar & Entertainment’ in 2012!

Not only does Karabinis select only the best options available for meat buying it from the same vendor he has used for nearly ten years, but also he buys his fish from vendors that fly in fresh fish everyday from Oregon and Hawaii. The kitchen also works to use organic produce and local products when in season. As for how he has kept locals coming back time and time again, Karabinis credits the simple approach, “letting the quality speak for itself.” Daily specials are available as well allowing for creativity and growth in the kitchen. Regulars have new options to try and the chefs thrive on being able to incorporate products in peak season.

Karabinis knew soon after he opened the restaurant that he wanted to provide an outlet for customers to bring home the variety of wine he offers in the restaurant and therefore, opened Vines Wine Shop, which is located on the opposite end of the plaza. Here, a plethora of wines, cigars, gourmet treats, beers and spirits are offered for purchase along with the options of joining wine and beer clubs.

And while the food is impressive, the caliber of the wine list is like none other

Another element setting Vines Grille and Wine Bar a notch above the rest is the

presence of live jazz and blues music seven nights a week. The regulars come to see their local favorites and occasionally get a world-renowned musician or two. There are no other restaurants in Central Florida quite like Vines Grille and Wine Bar where you can have a glass of premium wine while eating a savory, divine dinner outside on the patio in the gorgeous Florida weather while listening to groovy jazz music. Karabinis set out to create a restaurant that resembled the one he once saw back in Chicago. What he has developed is an entity that has surpassed expectations, has earned rave reviews, and has continued to develop with creative cuisine, a robust wine list, and a jazz music scene fit for the community. Whether Karabinis finds himself living in Napa Valley one long day from now, or ends up staying right here in Orlando, we’re thankful he conceptualized Vines Grille and Wine Bar and brought it to Restaurant Row. 7533 W. Sand Lake Road Orlando, FL 32819 407-351-1227 For more information please visit: www.vinesgrille.com www.vineswineshop.com <

> “Yes, that’s me, Brian Teach. I’m a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate, the youngest in a family of four who moved from Chicago to Florida 18 years ago. I’m thankful for my health, the wonderful support system I have at home, my family and friends who challenge me to be the best I can be.

tate. I take this approach of attending viewings to showcase my client’s home and I strive for faceto-face contact - so I can provide the personal touch they deserve when drafting offers or listing agreements. I focus on getting to know and understand the needs of my clients.

Humble, yet accomplished. As a Realtor, I help people sell and purchase the prefect home. I got into real estate because of a poor experience with a Realtor I hired to help me find my first property. The experience was horrible from the beginning to the end - and I knew I could do better plus I loved every aspect of the home search process.

Keeping up with the 21st century, I enjoy the challenge of exceeding the needs of individuals across five generations (from the Traditionalist to the Millennials) as well as selling and purchasing homes across an economic spectrum, whether the value is $25,000 or $2 Million. It’s not about the demographic or commission, rather the challenge and experience.

That brings me to Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate, where I work as a Realtor in beautiful Winter Park, Florida. Giving unparalleled commitment to professionalism and customer service, our Park Avenue office has been the # 1 overall performing office statewide since 2010, and we are definitely in the running for first place in 2012! Over 12 million worldwide visitors view our website daily. Proudly, I work with a team that sells more luxury properties in Central Florida than any other brokerage firm.

Detail driven, yet relationship focused. Every morning I wake up looking forward to spending time with my clients. Details are critical to me. During showings, everything needs to be orderly. With the properties I represent, I arrive early to ensure everything is perfect... the lighting, the furniture, the temperature and sometimes even clients pets. Even when showing another agent’s listings, I catch myself adjusting the window blinds or lighting or even agent’s business cards on the counter-top.

I’ve repeatedly earned the “International Sterling Society Award,’’ for being in the top 11% of all sales associates internationally. Given my continuing sales trend, I’ll be in the top 7% in 2012.Thanks to clients, peers and industry experts, year-afteryear I’m a “Five Star Real Estate Agent” recipient – which places me in the top 2% of local agents for providing exceptional service and overall satisfaction.Winning this award once is an honor.Winning year-after-year gives me immense pride!

While I’m detail driven, my primary objective is to develop strong relationships with clients. Hire me as your agent and I will get the job done. Representing buyer or sellers, I will service all price segments from first-time homeowners to luxury estates. I have extensive experience dealing with residential resale, condominiums, investment properties and short sales. I also offer consulting to meet your specific needs. My niche is Central Florida’s property market.”<

I’m Dreaming Of A White Whiskey Travis Joiner Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> It’s that time of year again. There is finally a chill in the air and the need to find ways to stay warm. Now everyone has his or her own ways of getting cozy and finding warmth. For some it is time to break out the spirits that warm you from the inside out. I have a choice for all of those people who choose to go that route. I should not be quoted on this but I think a certain holiday song starts off by saying, I’m dreaming of a white whiskey. No, well maybe it makes sense, after all you are still talking about Christmas spirits. However it goes my friend the dreaming has paid off. White whiskey is not a new concept. It has been around for a very long while. Think “make it in the woods” moonshine but slightly more polite. The biggest difference from white whiskey compared to say your brown-spirit whiskey is the aging and blending process you see when making it. You walk into your local watering hole and see Buffalo Trace or Pappy Van Winkle on the shelf and notice that distinct caramel color and know that is what we consider your typical, high-end whiskey. That whiskey hue that people have grown accustomed to is thanks to barrel aging and in some cases adding caramel color to your favorite spirit. Whiskeys of this style vary in color depending on how long they are aged and what is used to get that blending process just right.Typically the result is a smoother, well-rounded palate pleaser. You will get that nice kiss of smoke and perhaps a hint of welcoming spice on

STYLETOME.COM

your tongue. Everyone has their preference and that is why most whiskey drinkers, religiously, have their brand of choice. Let’s talk about what you gain when delving into the warming world of white whiskeys. As I said before this style has been around for a very long time. When you start playing with these white whiskeys you will notice some distinct differences beside the color. The aging on these spirits are typically non-existent. The results are a clear spirit that packs a punch. You benefit from a wonderful world of nuanced flavors that jump to the front of the line. The distillation process brings loads of flavor in the form of nice spicy characteristics and even a nice rounded perfume note. This really allows the distillers to showcase their craft at developing great whiskeys. Their ability with manipulating this grain shines through like a full moon on a crystal clear night. I recommend going to your local bar or restaurant and ask them if they have any of this “new” spirit hiding behind the bar. You will find out very quickly if this style of whiskey is for you. There is a big resurgence of making whiskeys of this style and you will see them pop up more and more. The big names in whiskey have jumped on board as well, so you will see your Jack Daniels (White Rye) and Jim Beam (Ghost) labels with this non-typical clear spirit in their bottles on shelves at your local liquor store. The fun really begins when

you search out some of those smaller craft whiskeys that really show what distillers can do with this particular process. Corsair Artisan Wry Moon brings a great example of an un-aged rye whiskey to us. Made in small pot still batches, this “moonshine” is a nice example of what white whiskey has to offer. It has a nice peppery note and you can really taste that grain that shines through. A hard to find but great example is Popcorn Sutton Tennessee White Whiskey. To say the story behind it is almost as interesting as the flavor profile of this whiskey is an understatement. You have to discover how much of an interesting character Popcorn Sutton is for yourself but you will have a great moonshine story to tell. At 93 proof this is not for the faint of heart but for those who latch on to a bottle will be hooked for life. If corn whiskey is your style of choice, check out Hudson Corn Whiskey. This un-aged spirit has a surprisingly soft finish while delivering that nice flavor profile that corn whiskey drinker’s prize. Any of these white lightnings are sure to meet and exceed your expectations. There are plenty of others out there so seek out these clear gems and discover them for yourself. Take them home and place them proudly with the other spirits on your bar or do like the southerners’ use to do with their moonshine and hide them conveniently in the cabinet under the sink. Whatever you choose you will be pleasantly surprised by these white whiskeys. Oh, and your winter will be a little easier, warm and cozy. <
