ARTEEK SUPPLY & DESIGN “The Future Belongs to Arteek” By Riesa Pascal Photos by Kyle Loftus provided by Arteek

By Riesa Pascal

Arteek is much more than just Orlando’s largest premier home design center. Arteek is a remarkable and unique business model that you won’t find anywhere else. Whereas big chain home improvement stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s have sold the same products for the last decade, Arteek is all about what’s new and what’s hot. They are the only store in Orlando that offers a onestop-shop solution for your home designs with a variety of high-end products. From luxury chandeliers to entire kitchens that you can touch and feel, there is no store in Orlando like Arteek. Unsurprisingly, the idea for this familyowned business came about as most brilliant ideas do—out of sheer frustration.

a building off of Lee Road, it took six months for Ahmed to renovate and convert the 15,000 square feet of space into the store it is today with modern LEDs and green technology throughout the building. It took a great amount of work, but now Arteek remains one of the most beautiful stores in all of Central Florida.

“I was looking for Toto toilets for my house and after going to five or six different stores, I realized that we have no stores in Orlando that could serve what I was looking for so I decided to create that store myself.” -Ahmed El Batrawy, Arteek Founder & CEO

To say a shopping experience at Arteek is “different” would be quite the understatement. Customers who walk through their doors can enjoy everything from hot chocolate and Starbucks coffee to refreshing wine and an ice cold bottle of beer. Best of all, customers don’t even need to buy anything to do so. It’s all 100% complimentary, which goes hand in hand with Arteek’s mission to maintain excellent customer service and to serve as many customers as they can—and that number is about to grow!

Ahmed El Batrawy founded Arteek in 2015 and opened its doors to the public in January of 2016. The name means “The Art of the Greek” and was inspired by a beautiful store that Ahmed used to frequent in the heart of Cairo, Egypt many years ago. After purchasing

“Customers come and spend an hour or two in our stores even if they’re not buying anything. They just want to get an idea, to look at the product, to feel it, to touch it, and to ask questions. We treat our customers very luxuriously and we do a lot of events and parties. We are trying to make the shopping experience different.” -A.E.

“We’re excited to be opening a second location in Downtown Orlando in 2019. It will be a very selective store with more lines, very high-end brands, and very good product pricing. We are also going to launch our first rewards program for builders and for consumers.” -A.E. No doubt about it, the new location will continue to offer the best pricing for the most luxury home design products that you can see, touch, and feel for yourself. The downtown location is slated to open the first month of January and by the end of 2019, Ahmed plans to have three Arteek locations across the entire state. When you look at the remarkable success of this company, it may surprise you to hear that not everyone has always been on board. “When I tried to open the store, everyone told me I was going to fail. They said, ‘Orlando’s not interested. People don’t care. They’re going to buy online,’ but I believe in Orlando. I believe it’s growing and that it’s a great city and we proved everyone wrong.” -A.E. If the best revenge against your naysayers is success, than Arteek has more than enough to go around. Today, Arteek is an authorized dealer for countless big names and boast over 75 billboards around Orlando. From Viking and Kohler to Delta and other selective brands, Arteek is changing the way Orlando shops by featuring an unbelievable selection of luxury products that you won’t find anywhere else. These are products with exciting new technologies that are matching how the new generation works and thinks. Needless to say, the future truly does belong to Arteek.

Just when you thought the Wizarding World of Harry Potter couldn’t get any more additions to the already huge attraction, we’re here to tell you that it does! Back in 2010 when the scenic, dark ride first opened up, it was a dream come true for all harry potter fans. And since then, Universal has added Diagon Alley, the Gringotts Bank, which houses Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, Hogwarts Express, which greets guests when entering Hogsmeade, and now a new roller coaster will be added! The Harry Potter official fansite Pottermore has exclusively revealed a sneak peak of the new rollercoaster.

CHRISTMAS IN ORLANDO Here is what all Disney has planned for the holidays! Orlando is one of the most visited cities in the Unites States (ranking #5 according to worldatlas. com)! And during the holidays the traffic gets even higher, and all the lights, shows, and parades make Orlando a hot spot during the months of November and December. So here are some of the traditional shows and events that take place in the parks. • Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at Magic Kingdom on select nights - Nov. 8-Dec. 21, 2018 • Epcot International Festival of the Holidays at Epcot - Nov. 18-Dec. 30, 2018 • Flurry of Fun at Disney’s Hollywood Studios - Nov. 8, 2018-Jan. 6, 2019

Although very little information has been released about the new roller coaster ride, the artwork released does appear to confirm that the attraction will take place in the Forbidden Forest. There hasn’t been any confirmation as to what the name of the new coaster will be, or a specific opening date, just that it will be opening early 2019. Universal Studios has also announced that there will not a be a Celebration of Harry Potter in 2019, but that there will be even more Harry Potter news from the parks that they have yet to reveal. Can 2019 come any faster?!

ACHIEVE A BLISSFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP WITH NEW SLEEP RITUAL MASSAGE at the Spa at Four Seasons Resort Orlando

In Orlando, the theme park capital of the world, the action-packed, on-the-go mentality and thousands of steps logged while enjoying the exhilarating attractions can be tiring. With so much to see and do, rest time and actual quality sleep is often not made a priority. Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort intends to help travellers with its new signature Sleep Ritual Massage offered at The Spa. The treatment aims to induce a complete state of relaxation and sleep readiness, and is accompanied by a home care kit to assist with achieving the ideal sleep at home, night after night.

and luxury escape,” says deStefano. “Combined with the take-home DreamKit, the treatment is a potential game-changer for parents, grandparents and anyone else who is not satisfied with their sleep.” Guided by dreamy relaxation music and sleepinducing aromas, the Sleep Ritual Massage is a multifaceted treatment that will take the guest through an incredibly relaxing journey that will sooth, stretch and expand the entire body, mind and spirit, creating a state of total sleep readiness.

The Sleep Ritual Massage was developed in partnership with Robert Michael deStefano, sleep wellness expert and co-founder of wellness company Longeva. The custom treatment incorporates breathing techniques that focus on seven specific somatic zones, plus a combination of sleep-inducing botanical scents and touch therapies that are designed to be ultra-relaxing, eliminating stress and tension and creating the perfect state of sleep readiness. The 80-minute massage treatment, USD 360, is ideal to reserve at The Spa in the evening, after a light dinner.

The DreamKit includes the market-first SleepCeuticals products used in the Ritual Massage. Along with its all-natural skin nourishers and moisturizers, SleepCeuticals features a custom, blend of 15 sleep-inducing, non-synthetic botanical extracts and essential oils. The SleepCeuticals found in the DreamKit include Sanctify Dream Cream, Anoint Sleep Serum and the Dream Mist spray. Added into the kit is The Sleep Ritual Music, a downloadable sixty-minute recording of clinically studied sleep-inducing music (also used in the massage) and a simple, step-by-step guidebook written by deStefano.

“The Sleep Ritual Massage is equal parts sleep wellness education and motivation, stress detox

treatment will help guests better understand the importance of creating an environment for quality sleep. “We know that jet lag and insomnia can sometimes have an effect on some travellers, and combined with Orlando’s action-packed environment, sleep is often put on the back burner,” notes Hofmann. “I had this treatment a year ago and was blown away. I can’t wait for people to experience this revolutionary treatment at The Spa.” The Spa at Four Seasons Resort Orlando is a true haven, featuring 18 treatment rooms including four couple’s suites and two couple’s spa bungalows, plus a full-service hair and nail salon. The automobile´s future is electric. And now, a Mercedes-Benz is charging ahead. The new EQC is the first vehicle produced under the product and technology brand “EQ”. It is also the first in what will be a growing family of all-electric vehicles bearing the three-pointed star. With an uncompromising blend of comfort, performance, design, intelligence and technology, the EQC blazes a new path for electric driving — and for Mercedes-Benz. To give the EQC a level of performance worthy of its name, we developed an all-new drive system. The vehicle features compact electric drivetrains at each axle, which give the EQC the confident and sporty characteristics of an all-wheel drive vehicle, 80kWh lithium ion battery

delivering 402 hp and 564 lb-ft of torque*. With the ability to fast-charge from 10 to 80 percent in 40 minutes, the EQC is poised to conquer any highway. While the new vehicle instantly registers as a Mercedes-Benz, it also forges a striking new path in design. Grille and headlamps are combined in a sleek black-panel surface at front, an arrangement accentuated by an LED Light Band at the top. Within, an asymmetrical cockpit puts the driver in firm and intuitive control, while rose-gold accents give the electric vehicle its own clear aesthetic. Digital and physical merge seamlessly to empower whoever takes the wheel.

| 402 hp and 564 lb-ft of torque

And the vehicle´s technology more than bears that out. Equipped with the all-new MBUX media system, the EQC responds to the driver´s natural, conversational language. The system helps to govern the car´s functions and learns over time. Here, it´s been engineered with additional EQ settings to help manage the vehicle´s charge status, energy flow, range display and other features of electric driving. Along with the ECO Assist system that helps maintain maximum efficiency, the EQC is more than just an electric vehicle: It´s a bold statement about the future of driving.

OUTRAGEOUS CELEBRITY GIFT EXCHANGES! Santa can’t compete with these wealthy gift-givers! By Riesa Pascal

Can you imagine how hard it must be to find a special present for a celebrity? They have an endless supply of cash available and can buy whatever their heart desires at the drop of a hat. Needless to say, their loved ones have to think outside the box and and get pretty creative when it comes to gifting the perfect Christmas present.

In 2011, Suri Cruise put together a luxurious Christmas wish list that included everything from a pony and diamond earrings to designer gowns “that will make her look like a fairy princess.” The requests totaled up to a whopping $130,000 worth of presents, but her dad was more than happy to give it to her.

Legend decided to give his wife a foodie’s dream and wrapped up an entire wheel of parmesan cheese for the holidays. The “cheesy” gift cost her hubby a couple thousand dollars, but it paid off as Chrissy instantly took to social media to share her excitement and show off her dream Christmas present.

Angelina Jolie During happier times, Angelina Jolie once purchased an actual waterfall in California for Brad Pitt. The unique Christmas present came after Brad said acting was his career, but architecture was his passion. Angelina had a hunch he would want to build there and she was right! The two once had plans to build a house right under the waterfall so he could enjoy the beautiful, natural wonder 24/7.

Beyoncé In 2010, the “Crazy In Love” singer showed that she really was crazy in love when she gifted Jay-Z a Bugatti Grand Sport for his December birthday (I sure hope it qualified for his Christmas present too). Purchasing the world’s fastest car cost the superstar a pretty penny at $2 million, but spending that kind of money is nothing when you’re one of the richest celebrities in the world. That same year, Jay-Z returned the holiday cheer by buying her $350,000 worth of Birkin bags from Hermes for Christmas.

Tori Spelling As Floridians, we are all too familiar with the dilemma of not living in the right climate for a white Christmas. Fortunately for Aaron Spelling, he has the funds to buy a white Christmas for his entire family! The Hollywood producer once had a snow machine deliver several tons of fake snow to his home in Beverly Hills so young Tori and her brother could have their very own “winter wonderland.” The best part? Tori loved it so much, she and her husband did the same thing for their kids in 2009.

Tom Cruise Most 5-year-old girls would be content with the latest Barbie for Christmas, but when your dad is Tom Cruise…you’re not like most 5-year-olds.

John Legend If you follow Chrissy Teigen on social media, then you know she has never been shy about sharing her love of cooking. In 2015, John

David Beckham It’s not unusual for a doting husband to gift multiple gifts to his wife, but David Beckham took it to a whole new level in 2005. David reportedly gave Victoria Beckham a $100,000 diamond-encrusted handbag followed by a custom-made $500,000 Rolls-Royce Phantom— but wait, there’s more! The grand finale was a $2.4 million ruby and diamond necklace from Boucheron, the famed Parisian jeweller.

DON’T MISS THE BEAT

A LEGENDARY CHRISTMAS ALTHOUGH POPPING WITH BRIGHT AND CHEERFUL NOTES, THE ALBUM ALSO BRINGS SOME OF THE MORE MELANCHOLY MOMENTS OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON INTO FOCUS.

You’ve set the scene for the holidays—a cozy fire, lights of red and green, and those near and dear to your heart gathered around the tree—all that’s missing is this year’s most anticipated seasonal album. Just in time for your holiday traditions to commence, John Legend’s first ever collection of holiday songs, A Legendary Christmas, will put you in the yuletide spirit with its contemporary twist on classic carols. Full to the brim with your holiday favorites, A Legendary Christmas showcases Legend’s signature smooth vocals, which become the perfect compliment to timeless melodies that define the season. True to his iconic knack for elegance, Legend spins the usual Christmas tunes into his own legendary arrangements, brightening your December with new sounds for the holidays. On A Legendary Christmas, the singer-turnedfilm producer lends his soulful charisma to grandiose remakes of holiday staples, while also delving into the singing style of crooners of past generations. With Legend’s modern and masterful musicianship coupled with his newfound old-fashioned flair, this holiday collection sweetly brings Christmas oldies into the light of present day while simultaneously harkening to yesteryear.

By Courtney Caggiano

Legend’s take on renowned Christmas classics will fill you with holiday cheer from the opening track, “What Christmas Means to Me,” featuring Stevie Wonder. Executive-produced by Raphael Saadiq, A Legendary Christmas is an elegant tapestry woven with colorful Christmas essentials, like “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “The Christmas Song.” Each number showcases Legend’s unique perspective of holiday music, with big-band excitement combined with a classy, 70s groove. The singer’s renditions of songs like “Silver Bells” pull

traditional tunes into a variety of genres and decades. Perhaps the most surprising adaptation is Legend’s “Christmas Time Is Here,” which turns up the dynamics on the song made famous by A Charlie Brown Christmas. This track is probably the creative highlight on the album, offering listeners a peek into Legend’s incomparable versatility. While the track listing of A Legendary Christmas exceeds expectations, Legend also includes some original songs that show off the songwriter’s gift of capturing tender emotion with emotive lyrics and warm melodies. His own number, “Bring Me Love,” evokes retro feels and holiday vibes with a cutesy chord progression and a sing-a-long chorus. Although popping with bright and cheerful notes, the album also brings some of the more melancholy moments of the holiday season into focus. On “Waiting for Christmas,” Legend sings a bittersweet reminder that a day as wonderful as Christmas can only come once a year. “By Christmas Eve” is Legend’s version of a holiday homecoming ballad, as he promises his loved ones that he’ll meet them before Christmas morning. If an album wasn’t enough to get you feeling the holiday joy, Legend is hitting the road for a 25date tour. After beginning his tour in Clearwater, Legend will be traveling the country sharing his seasonal songs through December 30th. From an uplifting new album to a seasonal tour, John Legend will remind you of the simple happiness of the most magical time of the year. Wherever your holiday plans take you, you won’t want to begin the festivities without A Legendary Christmas.

Orlando Ballet will continue its more than 20-year tradition of working with Orange County Public Schools (OCPS), and offer a free field trip performance to every second grade class in OCPS. This opportunity gives more than 15,000 young students a chance to experience “The Nutcracker” every year. The Nutcracker Tea on Saturday, December 15 will transport guests to the Land of Sweets where they can enjoy sweet and savory treats, take photos with the ballet’s beloved characters, and purchase unique holiday gifts – all benefiting the Orlando Ballet School. Reserve your seats for the Nutcracker Tea priced at $50 for children and $75 for adults. The event is timed so that patrons may attend the tea immediately after the 11 a.m. “Nutcracker Family Show” performance or before the 3 p.m. show. The Orlando Ballet School students play an important role in making this cherished holiday ballet come to life. This year, more than 150 students from the Orlando Ballet School will perform alongside the professional company on the Dr. Phillips Center stage. “The Nutcracker” helps prepare young dancers for a professional dance career and gives them invaluable stage experience. Each year two Orlando Ballet School students get the amazing opportunity to perform the role of Clara, one of the story’s main characters and the young girl who takes the audience through a magical journey after receiving a nutcracker doll. “Whether it’s a young child experiencing the wonder of ‘The Nutcracker’ for the first time or a longtime patron who still marvels at the show’s beautiful snowfall, people have a strong emotional connection to this ballet,” said Orlando Ballet artistic director, Robert Hill. “I’m thrilled more Central Floridians will get to enjoy the magic of ‘The Nutcracker’ this year. From the captivating music to the costumes, sets, and colorful cast of characters, it is truly a delight.” The run of performances completely sold out last season, and Orlando Ballet encourages guests to purchase tickets well in advance.

What’s to come! FASHION TRENDS OF 2019 Fashion week can be seen as one of many big indicators on what will be trending in the new upcoming season or year. For us fashionistas, this gives us a head start on what to splurge. We’re seeing many looks from the runway heading toward a unique and fun style that will have us expressing ourselves like never before. We have seen many of the same looks throughout the runway, such as fishnets, monochrome creme looks and the color yellow everywhere; however, these won’t be the hot new trends of the year. Now I bet you’re asking yourself, “What will the new trends for 2019 be?” Here’s a list of what trends we will be seeing come out to the light during the upcoming year. • • • • •

2018 FASHION RE-CAP Biggest fashion trends that we loved and hated One more year has passed by and we’ve witnessed many trends that have stayed and also trends that have said their goodbyes. Wondering what will be staying in trend for the upcoming year? Well, we’ve got you covered. Here are some fashion trends you’ll still be seeing everywhere and some trends you’ll be kissing goodbye. TRENDS THAT’LL STAY 1. Animal Print

From leopards to tigers to zebras, we have seen this trend everywhere. Animal prints have been a wardrobe staple for many fashionable women for decades. Animal prints can be incorporated many different ways, from faux fur jackets to dresses to even shoes. 2. Cycling Shorts

Ditch your yoga leggings for this trendy style. This sporty trend is not only for your daily jogs; it can be styled for brunch or even a night out with friends. 3. Male’s Perspective

Who says blazer suits are only for men? This year’s ongoing trend of blazers and suit sets will be rocking the fashion runways. With many different patterns like checker print and plaid, these will make you stand out. 4. Teddy Material

Teddy coats! We will continue to see this trend everywhere as they have now shifted to not only teddy coats but also a trench style teddy texture. Fashion lovers are raving over this trend.

TRENDS WE’LL BE SAYING BYE TO 1. Chunky Trainers

Now, this dad-shoes trend has been a style we have seen celebrities such as Bella Hadid wear all the time; however, is it practical? Many people don’t see it as practical, which is why it’s a dying trend. 2. Fanny Packs

You had your moment, fanny packs, but its time to say farewell. With styling it across the chest or by your hips, this trend took over the world of fashion by storm, but it has since been slowly dying down. 3. Fringe

This playful trend was an ‘it’ trend in 2018, but this fringe detail has been overused and it will not be too long until it’s gone. 4. Utility

Now don’t get us wrong, we love a timeless military jacket, but this trend has gotten out of control with some styles we have seen such as utility jumpsuits. This trend will be marching down the memory lane where it will stay. The great thing about fashion is that it’s what you like and how you make it out. Trends are not mandatory; if you don’t find it practical then there are many other ways you can incorporate these trends into your wardrobe. You can even create your own unique style, and who knows if you’ll become the next trendsetter.

MEN’S STYLE

TRENDS OF THE YEAR What will be the it looks for 2019? Season after season, we see great trends that catch our eyes. Hiking sandals, short shorts, pattern clash, and dad jeans are just some of the many trends we have seen in 2018. These trends made an impact during fashion week; however, they will be soon driving off the road and making space for 2019’s trends. We can already see leather, cowboy boots, and snakeskin patterns will be making a big comeback and are styles you should consider trying out.

STYLES OF THE YEAR Romance or anti-streetstyle... which side will you choose? Anti-Streetsyle

Romance

Goodbye to streetstyle and welcome the new antistreetstyle. In 2019, we will be seeing a big change in men’s fashion, starting off with the anti-streetwear that’s revolutionizing streetwear. Streetwear is well known for its pop culture influences and very stylish, laidback outfits seen by average influencers. This year we will be seeing couture as the norm of streetstyle, which is the opposite of what streetsyle is, hence the name, “anti-streetstyle.” Expect more suits, double-padded blazers, tailored pants, and a well-refined look as the new trend for men’s fashion.

This year’s trend will have you falling in love. Romance is in and we’re living for it. The look has a more countryside/romance look that is more inspired by the Shakespeare era. There are many ways to create the ultimate romance look such as loose tops, sheer tops, loose fitting pants, and flowing button-ups. If you’re not a fan of a completely loose-fitting outfit, try a flowy top with chino pants. This trend is very versatile and will be easy to pair with other items in your wardrobe.

CELLULITE TREATMENTS

THAT DON’T WORK

Are you drinking enough water? Drinking water seems like such an easy thing to do. But you’ll be surprised how little you’re actually drinking. And no, you don’t need to be carrying a gallon of water everywhere you go (unless you’re a gym freak). Water is extremely important to your health, even just consciously making an effort to drink one more bottle of water in your day will help in ways you can’t imagine. I know water can be boring, but there are many liquid flavor water enhancers that you can just squirt in your water. Here are some signs you’re not drinking enough... • You wake up with a dry mouth • Your urine is very yellow • You have bad breath • You have dry skin/wrinkles • You are often constipated • You are hungry even though you ate. I know it’s a broken record, but drink your water! Your body will thank you!

58

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Yep, you read right. We are about to unveil the promised “get-rid-of-cellulite” products that are out there that unfortunately, don’t. So heres to saving your coins on faulty products! CREAMS/LOTIONS

A lot of over-the-counter lotions and creams are promoted as cellulite treatments. They have ingredients like caffeine, retinols, etc. Although some do tighten, brighten and give a glow on the skin, cellulite is much more complex and a simple lotion just cant get rid of it. DRY SCRUBBING/SKIN BRUSHING

This one is a popular one. And it breaks my heart to tell you that what your doing is a waste of time. Dry brushing DOES have great benefits that you can use this method for, but vanishing cellulite isn’t one of them. It does improve the look a little but only on the surface of the skin, and it is something that you have to do consistently.

ROLLER AND SUCTION This you’ll see on the shelves as products called cellulite massagers. They suck or roll on the skin and, supposably, increase circulation. This usually gives temporary improvement, but it all depends on the person and device. GARMENTS There is a garment that’s meant to “massage” or “compress” the skin. This is another that manages cellulite, but it all depends on how often you use it and the person. There is no real fix to cellulite, and even though it is annoying, it is also normal to have cellulite. Don’t stress so much about it. Embrace it; it’s part of being a woman!

HIGH ON MAKEUP The cannabusiness is booming. Marijuana is making its way to the cosmetics world, and it’s taking over by storm. Many brands have been creating great products that will provide many beneficial components, leaving your skin or even your lashes feeling healthier. Brands like Milk Cosmetics and Estee Lauder’s Origins have been way ahead of the curve, generating their own products that are infused with CBD-rich cannabis oil. Marijuana makeup will also be great for vegans who have a hard time finding products such as mascaras, which normally have beeswax, a common component in mascara formulas. Watch out for many new brands that will be coming out with more cannabis oil-infused makeup that’ll leave you feeling high off of excitement.

DR. SHARON JAFFE Infertility Specialist | Center for Reproductive Medicine Endocrinology and Infertility at Columbia University. There she worked as director of the In Vitro Fertilization Center until Orlando Health recruited her to develop a resident education program for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Under her direction as resident educator, the standardized national scores in this field soared for her young doctors, with many becoming outstanding practicing physicians in Central Florida. In 1992, she gave birth to her beautiful daughter, Sarah. The following day she was diagnosed with breast cancer. While undergoing multiple surgical procedures and months of chemotherapy, she immediately became involved with local fundraising as part of the committee for Women Playing for Time. For many years she was an integral part of helping this organization raise millions of dollars to increase awareness and provide financial support in the fight against breast cancer. She has also participated at many other events to further help others transition from a breast cancer patient to a survivor. Since joining the Center for Reproductive Medicine (CRM) in 1997, Dr. Jaffe has combined her experience as a breast cancer survivor and her knowledge as a reproductive endocrinologist to develop a fertility preservation program for all men and women diagnosed with cancer. Patients are extremely grateful when she provides her experience and support, not only as a physician, but also as a successful previous patient. She understands both the medical and psychosocial importance of timely care: a patient diagnosed with cancer will be given an expedited appointment to discuss fertility preservation options and subsequently start the desired treatment. Providing education to others has always been important to Dr. Jaffe, the middle child of a college professor and a math teacher. As a student at The Johns Hopkins University, she found time to tutor others (in between her own studies and tennis team, achieving MVP and captain) and years later she was honored as Attending of the Year in Resident Education for expertise in teaching. As an Associate Professor at University of Central Florida School of Medicine, she volunteered on a committee to develop the reproductive and endocrine module for the School of Medicine where she was also awarded Outstanding Educator.

In 1991 Dr. Sharon Jaffe relocated to Central Florida, bringing with her compassion, knowledge, expertise and surgical skills to help couples conceive. After being graduated from The Johns Hopkins University, she moved to New York City for medical training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine where she remained to complete her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. After serving as the Chief Resident she had fellowship training in Reproductive

Education and research go hand-in-hand. Dr. Jaffe has been involved in research since freshman year in college. She has had many publications and presentations. She is proud that she has continued clinical research in private practice, helping many families to have children that would not have been possible without financially funded in vitro fertilization. Dr. Jaffe is extremely proud to be part of CRM which has been providing patients with individualized fertility treatment options since 1985 and achieving some of the highest success rates attainable. CRM is known for providing compassionate patient care, customized treatment plans, and affordable pricing options to give patients every possible chance of success to conceive. In November 2017, the Center for Reproductive Medicine opened a brand new state of the art facility in Winter Park on Orlando Avenue. The doctors and staff at CRM are proud to provide a comfortable environment “Where dreams are conceived”. Whether helping to conceive Central Florida’s first IVF baby or preserving fertility via elective egg and sperm freezing, CRM has always been on the leading edge of technology and is part of an elite category of infertility clinics that are equipped with onsite embryology, laboratory and surgical

facilities, providing patients with the highest quality of fertility care and convenience. In addition, CRM is a founding partner in My Egg Bank (MyEggBank.com), the world’s most successful egg freezing program with nearly 5000 successful deliveries. CRM physicians are also consistently recognized as Orlando’s Top Doctors and Best Doctors as well as named to the U.S. News & World Report list of Top U.S. Reproductive Endocrinologists. Dr. Jaffe has received much additional recognition including America’s Top Doctor, Best Doctors in America, Patient’s Choice Award, Compassionate Doctor Award and On-Time Physician Award. Both Dr. Jaffe and her husband Lee can be frequently spotted around town supporting fundraising events throughout Central Florida. In 2007, Dr. Jaffe became an avid cyclist and along with a group of friends began participating in local and national cycling events raising funds for research and support of diabetes, multiple sclerosis, AIDS, breast cancer, leukemia and lymphoma...just to name a few. Her favorite ride was with Young Survivor Coalition in Pennsylvania and Maryland, nearly 250 miles in 2.5 days. Dr. Jaffe is very proud that her daughter has continued in her footsteps with community volunteer involvement in St. Louis where she has participated in fundraising

events and serves as a mentor for future high school engineers. This exemplifies the importance of a leader, leading by example. In the past couple years, Dr. Jaffe has on more than one occasion used her cardiac lifesaving knowledge and skills in public. She applied them once to save a fellow cyclist and most recently over 30,000 feet in the air, she performed CPR! The plane made an emergency landing. Thanks to Dr. Jaffe, the passenger from China lived! Dr. Sharon Jaffe always says she has the best job in the world. “Through over 25 years of taking care of patients, I still look forward to coming in every day and offering my best to every infertility patient referred to me. It is a privilege to help them build their family. I have experienced many exhilarating moments when I meet “my babies” years later when I am introduced to them as children, teenagers or adults on the streets of Central Florida. On numerous occasions a child or a teenager has said “thank you” after being introduced to as me the doctor who helped with their conception. PRICELESS.”

WOMAN OF THE YEAR

When Vanessa Minter first moved to Orlando from Australia in 2006, she wanted to find a way to continue her community service activity in her new home. With her twenty years of experience in the hair industry, she wanted to use her knowledge and experience to give back to the community. As a newcomer to town, she focused initially on local theater productions, where she used her expertise to design and style wigs backstage in costume and make-up management. One day Vanessa Minter received a phone call from one of her dearest friends. There had been a certain gleeful certainty to her friend’s voice when she informed Vanessa about a potential volunteering opportunity at the Disney Pavilion at the Florida Hospital. There was an upcoming event in which pediatric patients would receive mini-makeovers. They had quite a few volunteers, but wanted a licensed hairdresser so that they could provide additional professional services. Raised with strong convictions about service to community, Vanessa quickly agreed, and attended the event. She had no idea the door that she had just opened. Soon after the event, Vanessa received another phone call from a child life specialist at the hospital. They wanted Vanessa to become a regular volunteer. She would be able to visit patients in the pediatric ward and provide similar services that she had at the event—facepainting, hair updos, and sometimes even trims. When she finally became certified to volunteer at the hospital, Vanessa realized that she felt a calling to her work. She loved volunteering with the children at the Disney Pavilion. Sometimes they wanted all sorts of face-paint, with wacky designs they could match with visiting siblings. Sometimes they were quiet, and wanted only the presence of having someone to watch a movie with. Volunteering became so much more than she had ever expected—soon nurses were requesting her to help with more difficult tasks, such as working with patients dealing with hair loss from chemotherapy. In all cases, Vanessa made connections with the patients, sometimes through laughter and sometimes through shared tears. The joy that Vanessa gave these patients was only matched by the joy they gave her. She had found her calling, and there was no going back. Some years later, Vanessa became the owner of a fabulous hair salon in Winter Park called Bangz Park Avenue Salon. She soon set about

transforming the salon into a warm and inviting place where everyone would be welcomed and provided with excellent service. She partnered with Aveda to ensure that all products were virtually 100% organic and never tested on animals. She enjoys mentoring the staff in providing quality services while also forming personal connections with each guest. Vanessa realized that Bangz Park Avenue Salon also provided the perfect platform to extend her volunteer work to the broader community. Through the salon, Vanessa and her team could bring the same joy and comfort to people referred to them by the Cancer Society and guests of the salon. People from all walks of life, many of whom are fighting the most serious of illnesses, found their way to Vanessa at Bangz Park Avenue Salon. Here, Vanessa worked diligently styling wigs, transitioning hair styles to reduce the trauma of hair loss, providing rejuvenating Aveda treatments, and most importantly, always with a friendly smile and a sense of normalcy into what can otherwise be a most difficult time for people. She does this as she has with all her other community work— out of a sense of service, refusing any payment. More recently, Vanessa began to realize a vision that would fuse Bangz Park Avenue Salon with her community service work: a foundation that would direct and support her efforts. A choice of name eluded her for a time. Vanessa had wanted to associate it with her late cousin, Karen Celeste Minter, a victim of cancer, who had been a role model for her. After recently suffering the loss of her family dog, she began to reflect on the meaning of his name. She discovered that his name, “Luke”, means “giving light.” Then late one night, the name Vanessa would give her new foundation came to her. The very next day, work begun on formally setting up and registering it as a not-forprofit corporation. The Celeste Giving Light Foundation was born. The foundation’s mission is to deliver complementary services for those undergoing treatment for chronic illness. The foundation provides a multitude of services for these guests. Guests can receive moments of wellness, which are stress-relieving treatments. Vanessa works with guests from the beginning of their journey and continues to support them throughout the duration of their treatment. The Cancer Society will often refer guests to Vanessa for help with personalizing their wigs and making them

their own. Often this can include trimming, coloring, and styling. Guests can also receive scalp treatments, as well as detailed education on how to take care of one’s skin outside the salon. Vanessa hopes that the organization will grow into something integral to the community of Orlando and potentially all of Florida. She hopes to start a chain reaction with other salons and plans to host community days in which she can provide education to licensed stylists on the work she does in the foundation. Vanessa sees the Celeste Giving Light Foundation as an outlet for compassion and a fostering of connection through community. She wants to not only help patients but establish personal connections as well. In one instance, Vanessa recalls the experience of one guest, whose diagnosis left her feeling afraid and uncertain. Since she had not yet revealed her diagnosis publicly, she had been afraid that her wigs would not look natural and her coworkers would notice. Vanessa assured her that they could fix the wigs together, and by their next appointment, she had styled them just as her guest wished. One of the ways she coped was by naming each of the wigs Vanessa styled for her. Through the last year, the two bonded, and both were extremely excited when Vanessa was able to cut and color her guest’s real hair in their most recent appointment. Whenever Vanessa sees a new guest for her foundation, she tells them about the naming of the wigs, and she hopes it will help them too. Meeting each of the guests inspires Vanessa—it makes her thankful for every sunset, every good cup of coffee, and even her drive home from work. It makes her excited to see the progress of her guests, to help them laugh, to sometimes help them cry, to help them feel that for a moment they can release themselves. In the future, Vanessa hopes to accomplish just what her foundation has been named for—she wants to give light, to feel the light from others, and to help that light grow in the community.

Being first time home buyers, she helped us with every step along the way and answered every silly question we had! She was available by text, phone, and email quicker than I would expect. We appreciated everything she did for us from beginning to end.” ~ Cassie and Alex S. “Jenn was the listing agent for a property I was interested in back in 2015. My credit wasn’t high enough to purchase anything at that time, but over the years Jenn kept in touch with me. She regularly sent me listings in my area via email. By summer 2017 I was back on my feet financially and Jenn set me up with several viewings. Even with the hurricane bearing down on us right in the middle of the contract phase, Jenn kept her cool and a month later I own a home! I’d recommend Jenn to anyone searching for an experienced and savvy realtor!” ~ Mark A. “Jenn helped me sell my first house. I did not know what to expect of this process as I had never been through it before, but she helped make every step of the way much easier with thorough communication and patience. EDGAR D. LOZADA JR. Equity Prime Mortgage Edgar D. Lozada Jr. bought his first home at the age of 19 and had acquired 14 properties by the age of 23. Since then, he says he has “loved every minute of his journey in the residential mortgage business.” Today, Edgar Lozada is the Vice President of Equity Prime Mortgage Florida, an Atlanta-based company with a large presence in Central Florida. Equity Prime Mortgage is a direct Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac & Ginnie Mae seller/ servicer that offers just about every loan product available on the market, giving clients the most options from which to choose. The company specializes in early or on-time loan closings every time and excellent communication with all parties throughout the process. Every company practice stems from a belief in “make-sense” lending, Edgar says. “Our ability to close common sense loans and make exceptions when necessary is just another thing we do that sets us apart from the competition,” he says. With more then 16 years of experience in the industry in Central Florida, Edgar has had his own successes since joining the company in 2011. For seven consecutive years he has continued to be a top ranking office and his office is projected to exceed $100 million in loan volume for 2018. “I always make myself available to my clients and referral partners, and I thoroughly explain and set proper expectations on every transaction,” Edgar says. “This creates a great overall experience for the client, every time. It’s not just about the figures making good sense; it’s about complete client satisfaction throughout the process.” Edgar began working as a loan officer in 2002 because of his love for financing and numbers. But his choice to work in the residential mortgage industry began with his passion for buying and managing real estate. He understood early the value of obtaining properties at a low price and the potential income that could be gained from each one. “I always knew if you were going to put your money somewhere, investing in a home was the best way to do it,” he said. And he has put that belief into practice himself. That knowledge and his own experiences grew into a desire to help people make their dreams of home ownership a reality.

“I work with a full range of borrowers, but I especially enjoy working with first-time homebuyers,” Edgar said. “Purchasing a home is very exciting, but it can also be stressful so I strive to make sure my clients are comfortable with their new home purchase and fully understand the entire process. My goal is to help them get the results they want and have the best experience doing it.”

People often ask Dr. April Merritt how she fits so much in a 24-hour day. She responds, “It takes a village and I have a village.” She is a wife, a mother and an OBGYN. She sees herself as “not extraordinary by any means,” but the way she puts her heart and soul into everything she does tells an entirely different story. Her husband and two sons know they are number one in her life. Dr. Merritt was born and raised in Charleston, SC. The daughter of a medical surgical Registered Nurse and a Chief Master Sergeant in the Air Force, she recognized her passion very early for medicine and her drive to excel. This led her to the College of Charleston where she majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry while researching Organic Chemistry and co-authoring several papers. Dr. Merritt felt the need to pursue a career interacting and helping people on a clinical level, which led her to decide to turn down an offer to continue her research and obtain a PhD. Instead, in 1998 she entered the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. During that time, she did research on Helicobacter pylori and its action in the stomach. This led to another co-authored published research paper. She also volunteered at a local pregnancy shelter for teenage girls and participated in education in the schools on sexually-transmitted diseases. Though she always had a passion for women’s health, it was her fourth year medical school rotation on labor and delivery that ignited her dream of becoming an OBGYN. During her medical school years, she met and married her husband, an Army officer and West Point graduate. With his loving support, she completed medical school in 2004. With her husband by her side, Dr. Merritt moved to Orlando Florida to complete her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology. During residency, they completed their family with the birth of their two sons in 2005 and 2008. Dr. Merritt entered private practice in 2009. She is a partner at Delaney OB/GYN. She continued to take an interest in writing and education by writing articles for Babyourself magazine as well as teaching midwife students. She enjoys spending time with her boys, catching up on reading, or going out with her husband. Photo by Kimberly Jefcoat

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW

FAILING TO TIMELY FILE

U.S. INCOME TAX RETURNS CAN BE A CRIME

Mark Horwitz

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

The filing of United States income tax returns is a yearly ordeal. People frequently are overwhelmed with preparing the return and consequently do not file on time. Failing to file a tax return in the time period required, usually by April 15 of every year, can constitute a crime. There have been high profile defendants, such as Wesley Snipes, who was convicted of failing to file tax returns for three years. Each year constituted a separate crime punishable by up to one year in prison and the actor was sentenced to three years in prison. Not everyone who is late in filing the yearly income tax return has committed a crime. The civil division of the IRS deals with late returns and collecting taxes, penalties and interest related to the late return. The civil penalty for not filing the income tax return is 5% of the amount required to be shown as tax on such return for each month past the date prescribed for filing the return, not to exceed 25%. In addition, the IRS imposes a Failure to Pay penalty of 0.5% on the unpaid tax every month after the tax was due, not to exceed 25%. IRS collection actions involve seizing assets including cars, bank accounts, household furnishings, personal items, as well as real estate. If the failure to file the tax return is done willfully, then a criminal case is possible. Willfully, in a criminal tax setting, means that a person knows of the legal duty to file the tax return and intentionally decides not to file a tax return. There can be non-willful reasons for not filing a tax return on a timely basis. Examples include: being out of the country, poor health, or not having knowledge of filing a tax return due to age, lack of education or some other innocent reason. If an IRS civil auditor believes that a taxpayer willfully did not file income tax returns, the agent can refer the matter to Internal Revenue Service criminal investigators. These investigators work in the Criminal Investigation Division. The criminal agents are called Special Agents

and have the responsibility to investigate IRS crimes, execute search warrants, make arrests and conduct thorough and extensive criminal investigations to determine violations of IRS criminal laws. The IRS will not usually bring a criminal case of failure to file a tax return if there is no tax owed. A criminal case involving failure to file will routinely involve at least three years of non-filed returns. In certain circumstances, the IRS has pursued tax evasion cases for failure to file tax returns. The proof of tax evasion involves additional elements that are not required in a failure to file case. The crime of tax evasion carries a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison for each year that a person is convicted of tax evasion. The Internal Revenue Service conducts its civil audits through the civil division and its criminal investigations are conducted by the criminal investigation division. Each division has its unique responsibilities. The civil division is involved in ascertaining the correct amount of tax and collecting unpaid taxes. The criminal division is exclusively involved in investigating and prosecuting tax crimes. Over the years I have observed individuals who do not appreciate the difference in the two parts of the IRS. People frequently talk with a criminal investigator from the IRS erroneously believing that the discussion concerns computing the right amount of tax and paying the tax. Given this belief, they will freely talk with a criminal agent. The result of such an interview can be devastating to a person’s liberty. A mistaken memory by the person interviewed or a mistake by the agent in understanding what was said or in preparing the report of the interview can result in an innocent party being indicted and facing significant prison time if convicted.
