How to experience one of the world’s most celebrated resort destinations

Palm Beach may only be a two and a half hour drive from Central Florida, but the relaxation, adventure and beach-side thrills offered up will leave you feeling miles away from everything you thought a Florida vacation could be. I discovered this for myself over the course of a four-day excursion that gave me a brief yet eye-opening look at all that the magical destination of Palm Beach, Florida has to offer its millions of annual visitors. The destination presents no shortage of award-winning hotels to call home during your stay, and I had the rare opportunity to experience not just one, but two of these fabulous options. The adventure began at Boca Raton’s Premier Waterfront Property, the Waterstone Resort & Marina. My accommodations at the luxurious Four-Diamond boutique hotel featured a private balcony with breathtaking water views that truly set the mood for what was to come for myself and my companions. The elegant, intimate hotel also boasts exquisite dining options with two fabulous restaurants conveniently located on property.

Patrons of Boca Landing Restaurant get to enjoy the area’s only on-the-water dining experience with cozy seating

overlooking Lake Boca and the beautiful Intracoastal Waterway. This signature dining experience is certainly a must while staying at the property, but for my companions and I, we found that the Waterstone Rum Bar & Grill offered the easy-going atmosphere we sought after and this was where we happily spent our first evening at the property. The simple menu maintained a tasty variety of classic grilled food and refreshing specialty drinks with just the right amount of authentic Boca Flair, such as my succulent entree of Pan Seared Wild Black Grouper. Sipping post-dinner cocktails surrounded by laughter, delicious aromas, and the company of new friends was all it took for me to see why the Waterstone Resort & Marina has been called the “Ultimate South Florida Retreat” and this was only my first evening in Palm Beach. To say we started off strong is an understatement and the next day also did not disappoint. The following morning kicked off as all vacations should in my humble opinion… with a relaxing, therapeutic spa treatment at the Boca Raton Resort & Club. The historic, private resort is a sight to behold, and guests could literally spend an entire week at the magnificent property

without ever dining at the same restaurant or sleeping in the same accommodations. It was an experience of pure luxury from the moment we drove through the grand entrance, and in true Waldorf Astoria fashion, the spa experience was equally exceptional. Inspired by Spain’s Alhambra Palace, the award-winning Spa is truly a piece of art featuring everything from a 10,000 square foot Spa Garden to a private Spa Pool with underwater music. A lengthy Spa menu offered an abundance of treatments, but a destination as one-of-a-kind as Palm Beach calls for something a little more unique than your typical massage, and that was exactly what I experienced during my signature ritual bath treatment. The highlight of the six step process was a luxurious personal soaking tub with aromatic bath salts, body scrub, and refreshing citrus splash that created a unique and memorable experience of stress-releasing relaxation and indulgence. Throughout my stay in Palm Beach, I was struck time and time again by the pure beauty and sheer splendor of the pristine destination, and there’s only so much you can see from a car so my companions and I opted for a more freeing

method of transportation in order to see and experience a different side of the area. Island Living Tours provides entertaining, yet educational bicycle tours of Palm Beach that showcase the high-society life of the Island from past to present. Led by Leslie Diver, our scenic tour highlighted the area’s world-class architecture, colorful history and its residents both famous and infamous. Leslie’s love and passion for the city was evident at every stop as fascinating facts, stories and city secrets effortlessly flowed out of her. The relaxing tour also provided us with an exceptional, up-close-and-personal view of Palm Beach that easily became my favorite experience of the entire weekend.

No matter how many days you stay in Palm Beach, you’ll always be longing for one more, and that’s just part of the magic that has transformed Palm Beach into one of the world’s most celebrated resort destinations.

In continuing the trend of relaxation and authentic South Florida experiences, it was only fitting that the last half of our stay in Palm Beach be spent at the AAA Four Diamond award-winning Hilton West Palm Beach. The casual elegance of the hotel captures the lively atmosphere of the surrounding area, and its prime location means guests can enjoy premiere Palm Beach shopping right across the street. From the first moment we stepped inside, I immediately knew I was going to have a difficult time saying goodbye to the stunning property once my time in Palm Beach had come to an end. With floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking city and pool views, the temptation to leave my spacious accommodations and explore the area was strong. As countless others can attest to, it’s simply impossible to not get caught up in the buzz and excitement of all that the Hilton West Palm Beach has to offer on its premises and just a few steps away. Both locals and tourists alike show up to the property daily to take advantage of every luxurious experience from sunbathing and sipping tropical cocktails by the zero entry resortstyle pool to enjoying an exceptional dinner at the property’s signature restaurant, Galley. Galley is where I can confidently say I had my favorite dining experience in all

of Palm Beach, and quite frankly, it stands to rival many restaurants that exists even beyond this destination. Galley staff members Jason and Aaron took such great care of my companions and I that I would’ve returned for dinner every night, if not for a greater desire to experience all the many other must-have dining options located throughout the Palm Beach area. Fortunately, our dinner at Galley took place on a Friday evening, which meant we had the pleasure of kicking off our weekend with Galley’s live music entertainment in addition to enjoying the craft cocktails and chef-driven creations that are available every day of the week. All evening long we feasted on creative, uniquely crafted dishes such as wood-fired master grilled skirt steak and authentic margarita pies straight from the Galley pizza oven. Naturally we washed it all down with refreshing beverages from the experiential mixology bar, which boasted drinks infused

with fruit flavors, local brews and twists on classic cocktails such as a Smoked Old Fashioned masterfully presented in a smoking globe. No matter how many days you stay in Palm Beach, you’ll always be longing for one more, and that’s just part of the magic that has transformed Palm Beach into one of the world’s most celebrated resort destinations. From a peace-inducing morning yoga session outside of Grandview Public Market to exploring the unique culinary and cultural experiences located within, each attraction in Palm Beach offers a multitude of ways to enjoy and experience all it has to offer. Foodies seeking a six course plated wine dinner by nationally recognized Master Chefs will enjoy the farm-to-table offerings of Swank Specialty Produce’s Master Chef dinners. The sheer elegance of RH Rooftop Restaurant located across from Hilton West Palm Beach

will provide you with a timelessly classic dining experience, while both Gary Rack’s Farmhouse Kitchen and Batch New Southern Kitchen & Tap feature sustainably sourced and prepared cuisine that’s farm-to-table fresh. Whatever you desire from your next beachfront vacation, you will find all of it and more by discovering The Palm Beaches. LUXURY MEETS

CAPABILITY

The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is Rolls-Royce as it’s never been seen before. When Sir Henry Royce said, “Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it,” he could have had Cullinan in mind. Younger and more adventurous customers want a Rolls-Royce that will take them completely off the beaten track and reward them with life’s most enriching experiences. What they don’t want is a vehicle as ubiquitous as an SUV with compromises such as increased cabin noise due to the “two-box” formula; shared platforms that affect performance and comfort; the choice of being good either on-road or off-road; or a lower, more featureless SUV that blends in and becomes just another car. Cullinan is luxury in its purest form blended with perfect practicality and off-road capability. Effortless, everywhere is not just the promise behind Cullinan. It’s the fact. Making luxury effortless, everywhere engendered an evolution in Rolls-Royce’s approach to creating an authentic Rolls-Royce SUV.

THE ARTS

Nina Winters was born in New York City and lived in northern and southern California, New Hampshire and Clearwater, FL. She has traveled extensively in Europe, Africa and South America. Her sculptures mirror her broad worldview of the cultural and environmental aspects of life. Nina travels around the world collecting ideas for her work, getting inspiration from the peoples and environments of an eclectic mix of cultures. From a young age she developed a strong interest in painting, sculpture and architecture. She began her career as an artist in the field of paint and color. She made the cross to three dimensional art after having a vision of a monumental sculpture enduring through time as positive communications to society. Today she makes this vision a reality. Her work in bronze brings forward her sophisticated knowledge of the use of color that she developed in her painting years. She uses patinas in both bright and subtle ways to convey the stories she tells of the human potential. Nina also works in bronze, glass, steel, aluminum and concrete. She paints as well, creating what she calls “Outrageous Portraits” of people, capturing the essence of the personality. If you want a daring, unique and sophisticated portrait, she is the person to do it! She graduated from the School of Art and Architecture at Cornell University and studied in New York City at The New School, Parsons School of Design and Hunter Graduate School. Working from her studios on the waterfront of Clearwater, Florida and in the woods of New Ipswich, New Hampshire, she creates sculptures that are unique solutions for corporate, home and hotel architecture as well as monumental works for urban and country environments. Her work is in major collections in the United States, Canada, South America, Australia and England. Her clients include corporate officials from Paine Webber (now UBS), the Wall Street Group and Hiram Walker. Her work has been featured in the Paramount film “Kiss the Girls” starring Morgan Freeman & Ashley Judd.

She was interviewed on “Daytime”, a nationally syndicated television show, and poured a bronze sculpture in her outdoor courtyard studio. Gallery shows include The American Institute of Graphic Artists (NYC), The Art Directors’ Show (NYC), St. Petersburg Center for the Arts (FL), Stephen Christopher Gallery (Rancho Mirage, CA), Rick Moore Fine Arts Gallery (Naples, FL), The Pen & Brush (NYC), Capricorn Studios (Ybor City, FL) Menaul Gallery (Clearwater, FL), The Elaine Fleck Gallery (Toronto), the ARC Gallery at the MOSI Museum (Tampa), Chic Evolution in Art ( Atlanta, GA),The Colored Thumb Gallery (Miami, FL), the Aaron Faber Gallery (NYC) Duncan McClellan Gallery (St. Petersburg, FL), Dolphin Galleries (Maui, Hawaii), Rebecca Low Gallery (Dallas/Ft. Worth TX),Duncan McClellan Gallery (St. Petersberg, FL) and Stackenborg/ Greenberg Gallery (Sarasota, FL) She has been honored with many awards for excellence in sculptural concept and design.

HER WORK IN BRONZE BRINGS FORWARD HER SOPHISTICATED KNOWLEDGE OF THE USE OF COLOR THAT SHE DEVELOPED IN HER PAINTING YEARS.

Nina’s work is in major collections in the United States, Canada, England and Australia including the private collections of celebrities such as David Campbell (composer, arranger and conductor who has worked on over 450 gold and platinum albums), Chick Corea (Grammy Award winning jazz musician), Lionhead Studio founder Peter Molyneux, and Howard McCrary (Grammy Nominated music producer). Nina created a 7 foot by 9 foot monumental commission, “The Galactic Samurai/ Confrontation of Evil”, which was installed at the private residence of the Senior Vice President and Global Chief Technology Officer of PepsiCo. She also designed a 12’ sculpture for the city of Kirov, Russia. She worked for three months in Johannesburg creating a 6’ x 10 ½ modern Lion that is being installed at a castle in Kyalami, South Africa. All of her sculptures can be commissioned in any size. Group tickets ($10 - $20) are available now by phone at 407-447-1700 ext. 1, online through orlandoshakes.org, or in person at the John and Rita Lowndes Shakespeare Center (812 East Rollins Street). Will her courage and wit be enough to outsmart the queen’s evil plot? “It’s such a wonderful and creative take on a well known tale most of us grew up with,” Director of Education Anne Hering says. “This adaptation brings a fun and new take on Snow White while honoring its core message about love and courage.” The artistic team for Snow White includes Director Patrick Braillard, Scenic Designer Chris McKinney, Lighting Designer Philip Lupo, Costume Designer Mel Barger, Sound Designer Britt Sandusky, ASL Coordinator Mandy Longo, and Stage Manager Alyssa Will Zegers.

YOUR SCALP NEEDS LOVE TOO We all hear about exfoliating your face and body, but what about your scalp? Taking care of your hair and taking care of your scalp are two different things. The skin on your scalp is just like the skin on any other part of your body, so just like any solid skin care routine, that means exfoliating regularly. Keeping the scalp incredibly clean is going to help the hair you have now, it’s going to help the hair grow thicker and fuller, and most importantly it’s going to help that future hair grow thicker and fuller. A clean scalp is one of the most important things you can do to ensure you have healthy growing hair.

DON’T MISS THE BEAT

H A P P I N E S S B E G I N S TO U R Jo n a s Brot h e r s By Courtney Caggiano

After a long seven-year hiatus, the world’s favorite brother trio is back and taking over the summer sound waves with a fresh new album and their first tour in nearly a decade. Joe, Nick, and Kevin, better known as Jonas Brothers, are coming together once again to bring their 40-city Happiness Begins Tour to Orlando’s Amway Center on Friday, August 9, as one of the most highly anticipated shows of the year. With the June 7 release of their latest album, Happiness Begins, Jonas Brothers are giving fans a glimpse into their lengthy time apart as they pursued individual creative dreams—Nick has fashioned himself a chart-topping solo career, while Joe led pop band DNCE— as well as a look into what the future holds for the reunited three. “After 7 years of not working together living life and finding ourselves in our own paths we came back to give you our journey in album form,” Kevin, the eldest brother and father of two, wrote on Instagram. Jonas Brothers enthusiasts got a taste of what Happiness Begins would hold with their first single in six years, “Sucker,” the catchy but very grown-up return hit with which the group surprised fans at midnight on March 1.

The single shows definite maturity in all three of the brothers, with a refined, clean sound that elevates their usual rock-pop aesthetic. Now that all three of the boys have found themselves in committed romances—Kevin’s been married to Danielle Jonas since 2009, Joe is engaged to Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner, and Nick married Priyanka Chopra in December—their new musical venture reflects the nowsettled lifestyle of three young men in love. It’s easy to see why Happiness Begins might not echo the heartbroken songs of bitter longing and cheeky revenge that filled their previous albums from a youth gone by; the album’s lead single celebrates their current longterm relationships—even featuring the brothers’ significant others as leading ladies in the “Sucker” music video— with a shameless, head-over-heels honesty that is a new look for brothers. The album’s follow-up single, “Cool,” also shows this uninhibited audaciousness, with bold lyrics that emphasize the brothers’ newfound confidence in where their path has led them thus far—a path that reunited the brothers after years of missing the magic that exists when they are together.

Fans can get an even closer look at this new chapter of the JoBros in their documentary available on Amazon Prime beginning June 4. The film, Chasing Happiness, shares the untold story of the band, from their early days to their breakup in 2013 and what’s on the horizon after their 2019 return. Including home videos from Jonas Brothers’ childhood and never-beforeseen moments revealing the highs and lows of their careers, Chasing Happiness divulges into the band’s most emotional moments and what encouraged them to put family first, even in the face of whirlwind success. June is a big month for Jonas Brothers— and their fans—from the release of their most recent album since 2009 and their 2019 digital documentary to their North American arena tour. You won’t want to miss out on being a part of this legendary musical comeback. Get your tickets for the August 9 stop of the Happiness Begins Tour today.

CELEBRITY SOUP

Celebrities Who Were Once Homeless Rags-to-riches stories aren’t just for Hollywood movies! By Riesa Pascal

It’s easy to look at the lavish lives of celebrities and assume they’ve always had everything handed to them on a silver platter, but often times that assumption couldn’t be farther from the truth. Likewise, it can also be very easy to do the opposite and to pass judgement on homeless individuals by making unfair assumptions about the circumstances that got them there. The reality is that homelessness can happen to anyone at anytime, and the following list of celebrities prove that to be true.

CHRIS PRATT Years before Chris Pratt was fighting off dinosaurs and saving the Marvel Universe, he was homeless and living out of a flea and mice-infested van in Hawaii. At age 19, Chris accepted a one-way ticket to Maui from a friend and moved into the van which he reportedly referred to as being “pretty awesome.” In order to cover gas and food, Chris picked up a part-time job waiting tables at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company which is where he was discovered by actress Rae Dawn Chong who decided to cast Chris in her film Cursed: Part III. Rae took Chris to Los Angeles and as they say in the movies… the rest is history!

JAMES CAMERON From Titanic to Avatar, everyone is familiar with famed filmmaker James Cameron, but he hasn’t always had such a wildly successful career. When James was writing The Terminator, he spent a significant amount of time living in his car because he was struggling to make ends meet. When he pitched his script to production companies, they said they liked the story, but they weren’t fond of him directing due to his

limited experience. He finally compromised by selling the rights to the screenplay for $1 to producer Gale Anne Hurd in exchange for being able to direct the film. The Terminator went on to make more than $77 million worldwide and James Cameron quickly became a household name.

STEVE HARVEY Steve Harvey is a man who needs no introduction, but he worked hard to achieve that level of fame and success. When he was just starting out as a comedian in the late 1980s, he suddenly found himself homeless after a few gigs fell through. Rather than give up on his career, Steve lived in his 1976 Ford Tempo for three years while continuing to chase his dream. He reportedly would wash up in hotel bathrooms, gas stations, or even swimming pool showers until he finally got his big break when he was called to perform on Showtime at the Apollo.

HALLE BERRY Halle Berry was only 21 years old and still heavily reliant on her family’s support when she first moved to New York to pursue becoming an actress. When she eventually ran out of money, her mother refused to send her any more cash and Halle quickly found herself without a home. During this time of her life, the future Hollywood star stayed in a homeless shelter while continuing to pursue acting. Halle spoke about this time of her life in an interview saying, “It taught me how to take care of myself and that I could live through any situation, even if it meant going to a shelter for a small stint, or living within my means, which were meager. I became a person who knows that I will always make my own way.”

JEWEL For decades, the Grammy Award-winning singer Jewel has been singing her way into the hearts of millions, but the multi-platinum star hasn’t always enjoyed a life of fortune and success. In fact, Jewel spent a year living out of her car as a teenager after her boss fired her for refusing to sleep with him. She continued writing songs despite her situation and began to develop a loyal following by singing in a local coffee shop. No one knew she was homeless during this difficult time, but she didn’t stay homeless for long! She eventually ended up securing a record deal and went on to put together an album that sold more than 12 million copies.

JENNIFER LOPEZ When Jennifer Lopez was 18 years old, she butted heads with her mother over her dream of becoming a dancer. Jennifer’s mom wanted her daughter to go to college instead, so Jennifer moved out and started sleeping on the sofa of her dance studio. Jennifer spoke about her resolve in an interview saying, “I was homeless, but I told her, ‘This is what I have to do.’” Just a few months later, Jennifer landed a gig dancing in Europe and shortly after her return, she booked another gig as a Fly Girl on In Living Color which turned out to be her big break.

BEST FRIENDS

Summer Survival Guide By Megan Miller

We all love spending summer days soaking up all the sun we can.

Just like us, there are dangers to dogs being outdoors in the heat, and leaving your best furry friend indoors just isn’t an option on a beautiful day. Here are some ways to keep your pup safe and ready to tackle the sunshine.

Pup Protection Gear 1. Cool Wear Cooling technologies activate in stylish puppy pieces by just soaking them in cool water. With vests, bandanas, and even collars you’re sure to find the perfect cooling accessory for your little one. Dip, wring out, and put it on!

Good2Go Cooling Dog Bandana, $5, Available at Petco

Safety Tips Make sure to never leave your pup in an unattended vehicle. The temperature in your parked car can climb to over 40 degrees higher than the outside temperature. Even with the windows rolled down your dog can still overheat. The risks associated with leaving your dog in a parked car aren’t worth it. Unless stores are pet friendly, it’s best to leave your dog at home while running errands. They’ll be happily waiting for you back at home basking in the cool AC. Paw patrol! Whether your pup’s adorable paws are pink, spotted, or black, they need to be protected from hot surfaces. If you can’t walk barefoot without saying, “Ow,” neither can your little one. Avoid asphalt and bare surfaces as much as possible. Try to choose a shady or grassy path so you can both stay safe and cool in the sun rays. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Since dogs sweat minimally, their way of cooling down is panting. If you see a panting tongue, be sure to help out! Packing a portable bowl and water bottle is the key to keeping your little player safe. The sun can wear you and your pup both down, so make sure you both re-energize with water breaks.

2. Dog Booties Booties in the summer may come in handy more than you would think. Keeping those cute paws from burning has never been so fashionable. Dog booties are the perfect protection gear for your pup so they can adventure even in the hottest dog parks.

Pawz Waterproof Dog Boots, 12 count, $9.99, Available at Chewy

3. Sunscreen Put your war paint on! It’s very important to sunscreen your dogs, but it’s also very important to use the right one. Look for the sunscreens that are specifically intended for dogs. They should not contain zinc oxide or paraaminobenzoic acid. Make sure you apply it to your little one 20 minutes before going out so it soaks in, and don’t forget to reapply, especially after a swim!

Well & Good Sun Protection Dog Wipes, $5.93, Available at Petco

2019 ORLANDO’S HALL OF FAME – MEN OF THE YEAR

PATRICK MARS

AmeriFirst Home Mortgage Patrick Mars made Mortgage Lending his career of choice after graduating from Michigan State University in 1998. He started as a loan officer and quickly moved into Sales Manager, Branch Manager and he is currently an Area Manager for AmeriFirst Mortgage. Patrick has many interests but just one passion: to help others achieve the American dream of homeownership. “I let my customers know that they can count on my honesty, that I am quick to respond and that they will hear from me, whether the news is good or not so good,” he says. “My reputation has served and saved me in this industry.” In fact, Patrick is well known in the market as a valuable resource for real estate agents and is often referred to as the guy that ‘gets it done’ when it comes to managing their buyers’ home loans. AmeriFirst Home Mortgage has been in business for over 30 years and that comes as no surprise since the strong leadership in the company comes all the way from the top to the branch level. In his current role as

area manager, Patrick is part mentor, leader and inspiration for his team of loan officers and support staff. They work together to provide purchase, refinance and renovation lending products. Patrick takes considerable pride in guiding his clients through the home loan process to find the best loan and terms available to meet their needs. Because he knows buying a home can be overwhelming, he takes the time to get to know his customers in order to build their trust and ease their concerns. The best part of his job, he says, is helping first-time homebuyers overcome challenges on the path to homeownership and sharing in their joy as they achieve success. Living in a boomtown like the Orlando area – with its growing population, job growth and low unemployment – is especially exhilarating for Patrick. AmeriFirst provided him with the opportunity to build a new team when the Winter Park branch opened in October 2017 - he set his sights on leading the biggest, strongest mortgage team in Orlando and they are now the #1 branch in the entire company. While he readily admits it’s a competitive marketplace, his knack of building and growing

relationships, along with his ability to adapt to the ever-changing mortgage banking industry, has proven to be a winning strategy. To anyone looking to enter the mortgage industry, Patrick says there are a few traits that can help them succeed. This includes having patience with people, a willingness to fail (and not be discouraged by failure) a strong work ethic, perseverance and finding the right mentor to help you grow. Patrick says he was attracted to AmeriFirst Home Mortgage because of its strong leadership and core values which includes a supportive culture and family atmosphere. He and his wife, Zeudy, value a work/life balance and are committed to living and role modeling a healthy lifestyle to their four active children. Family activities usually include daily physical exercise as well as taking part in his kids’ special interests: traveling, basketball, swimming, singing and piano.

2019 ORLANDO’S HALL OF FAME – MEN OF THE YEAR

BYRON M. LAWSON JR.

Trinity Preparatory School - Head of School I love schools. My 25 years in three independent schools remind me that no matter the pressures, if you can execute an authentic mission with the student experience at its core and look to the future while embracing tradition, your school has a great chance of achieving long-term success for children and adults alike. Three encounters have shaped my outlook on leadership in education. First, on a language immersion program in southern Spain in 1986, while being awed by the confluence of Muslim and Catholic cultures, I learned that being “American” meant something surprisingly unique outside the United States. As a result, I’ve delivered academic presentations from Dallas to Boston, London to Paris, NapierHastings, New Zealand to Cape Town, South Africa, always searching for how best to lead a learning institution.

Second, and to my surprise, on the last day of classes in 1997, a former student clarified for me what it meant to teach: “You know Mr. Lawson, you are my favorite teacher. I have never worked this hard in my life. Actually, I’ve never wanted to work this hard---ever!” When I could connect with my students in real, tangible ways, they learned a number of lessons about history but even more about themselves. Especially today, the student-growth experience makes my work meaningful. Later in my career, a mentor remarked, “Hire the best people the market will allow, verify their individual and collective excellence, and applaud their efforts.” Today, my most important responsibility is to hire the best teachers and coaches I can, giving them the tools to be their best selves with the students they lead. I believe in everyone I work with and try to help bring out their best selves.

Operated well, mission-driven organizations positively transform the lives of every person in our community. In this vein, I have ventured into the larger Orlando community and have been blessed to work on the board of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and chair the Down Syndrome Association of Central Florida Board of Directors. Both are personally rewarding, community-oriented experiences. I am privileged to work on teams that create learning and work environments where everyone pursues excellence in every way; we cultivate students’ sense of wonder and help them on their path to clarity. I can’t imagine a better professional life.

Technicians can connect with Porsche specialists at the U.S. headquarters who can virtually view the vehicle as the technician works on it. This enables the technician and the specialist to consult in real time while the technician works.

2019 ORLANDO’S HALL OF FAME – MEN OF THE YEAR

Stephen Weed is a guy who spends his time

torn between two cities. He’ll admit it’s difficult to dismiss Winter Park’s Hillstones and indulging in a nice glass of red by the lake. We caught up with him during a recent trip, just north of Atlanta, at Montaluce Winery in Dahlonega, Georgia. He was hunting new showroom space for his latest venture, Georgia Office Interiors, a replica of his powerhouse dealership in Orlando, Interior Contract Services (ICS), located off John Young Parkway. At age 34, Weed recently assumed the role of CEO of Orlando’s oldest office furniture company in January, founded by his Uncle, Larry Weed, in 1983. By April, Weed had already hired new sales reps, doubled his design department, and tripled down on what has truly made ICS ultimately successful. Its relationship with its customers. “Customers come to us, and 99% of the time, bring us reoccurring business because of our ability to listen to what they truly want, stay within their budget, and get furniture to them in a timely manner.” Weed credits having one of the only in-house installation teams in Florida for what makes his company different. Although he can’t tell us who they are, many of the local Orlando furniture dealers rely on Weed’s team of installers to get the work done, even for projects ICS didn’t initially sell. “There are larger government and state clients we do business with, layered with many private corporations who engage us for design, furniture and space planning needs.” Stephen Weed, CEO of Interior Contract Services, pictured at Montaluce Winery

A quick search yielded further insights into just who Weed’s doing business with including UCF, Advent Health, United States Central Command, Orlando Police and Orange County Sheriff Office to name a few. Weed confirmed he is working with companies who haven’t even disclosed their pending move to Orlando.

STEPHEN WEED

“We serve several Fortune 500 companies throughout Florida, the US and internationally. They trust us to accomplish the work and deliver an amazing quality experience along the way”

Orlando’s Office Furniture Disrupter

The furniture industry is a new one for Weed, who has grown up around it but never in it. Weed’s former professional life involved a diverse background in local, state and federal Government and Finance. “Honestly, I was shocked at how expensive office furniture is, coming from a business and government background, I immediately recognized

we needed lines of furniture at all price points to meet our customer’s budgetary needs.” He further added, “In the age of Ikea and Staples it’s hard for small businesses and growing ones to justify spending such a large amount on office furniture.” When asked about what he dislikes about the furniture business thus far, Weed was quick to call out the fakes or “Corporate Goliaths” in the industry. “You have so many shops, especially here in Orlando, who really have no true presence, but are just hunting Orlando businesses requiring furniture and want to stick them with a large invoice. They don’t have installers. They don’t have trucks. They don’t have dedicated project managers and licensed designers. They’re calling me ultimately to come and install or fix their stuff.” Weed finds it somewhat comical how office furniture businesses go to such great lengths to make furniture not boring, sexy, and ergonomically friendly. “People buy dog and cat food every week. They buy office furniture every 10 years. It’s not some spiritual journey or life changing experience. It’s furniture. It comes down to what the specific company truly needs, price, and your ability to deliver. It’s pretty straightforward.” As far as mentors he would like to follow in the industry, John Bassett of Bassett Furniture immediately comes to mind, the principal character in the National Bestselling book Factory Man. “John is a guy who grew his family’s furniture company-one of the last true American businesses, saving it from big, corporate takeovers and looming threats of outsourcing. He focused on what his business does best and never compromised his integrity along the way.” “I feel we are similar in some way,” Weed said. “We have had several companies try to buy us over the years, and have been approached to buy poor quality stuff from China and what not, but we won’t do it. It doesn’t live up to the expectations our clients have for our products.” Weed is a self-confessed Dunkin’ Donuts coffee junkie and wine lover. He also currently finds himself as office furniture’s latest breath of fresh air.

ORLANDO’S RISING STARS

DALLAS JOINER, MD

Orlando’s Rising Stars

There was never any sudden moment when I realized I was going to be a doctor. I simply always was. Growing up in south Georgia, I always followed my father, a cardiologist, around the hospital and knew that one day I wanted to do the same. After high school, I left Georgia to head to University of Florida to pursue my dream, where I completed my undergraduate work followed by medical school. I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to train at UF under so many accomplished physicians and doctoral faculty. I fell in love with emergency medicine during medical school and knew that was what I wanted my career to be. The opportunity of a lifetime came my way when Orlando Health accepted me into their Emergency Medicine training program here at Orlando Regional Medical Center in one of the busiest emergency

rooms in Florida. During my past three years here, I have trained under some of the top ER physicians, trauma surgeons, and critical care physicians in Florida. The mentors I have found at ORMC have helped to develop me into the physician that I am today. As I finish up my training in Orlando, I am incredibly excited to say that I have accepted a fellowship position at the University of Miami - Jackson Memorial Hospital in Anesthesia Critical Care for the next two years. Following completion of this fellowship, I hope to return to Orlando Health to continue to practice as both an emergency medicine physician and a critical care physician and give back to the program that has given so much to me.

The Orlando International Fringe Festival is the oldest, non-juried festival in the United States and is a celebration of theater, art and music. The 28th Annual event returned to Orlando from May 14th-27th and it was bigger and better than ever before! Fringe encompassed hundreds of shows, as well as free experiences like the Visual Fringe, live music, and Kids Fringe shows on Saturdays and Sundays. Attendees got to enjoy a variety of tasty food vendors and even a Beer Tent. Fringe events were held at various venues in Orlando’s Loch Haven Park. True to Fringe roots, all acts remained uncensored, exposing patrons to performances from mild to wild. The dazzling musical Anastasia took over the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts from May 14th-19th and delighted a sold out crowd of theatergoers. Audience members were transported from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlisted the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embarked on an epic adventure to help her find home, love and family.

For the past 32 years, the original Orlando Carnival Association has presented, promoted and preserved Caribbean Carnival culture through the Orlando Carnival Downtown celebration. Held in downtown Orlando on May 26th, the Orlando Carnival was a family-friendly festival filled with pageantry and a weekend of parties that celebrated the Caribbean culture. Festival goers were in for a great treat with live rhythmic music, arts & crafts vendors, and more. The party also featured a combination of brightly colored costumes and dancing that was truly Caribbean. In celebration of American Craft Beer Week, Beer ‘Merica featured 100 different craft brews to sample from, all from the good ole US of A. The event was held at Gaston Edwards Park on Saturday, May 18th and included live music, food trucks, a game zone and plenty of craft brew samplings. Once again this year, all proceeds for Beer ‘Merica benefitted the Camaraderie Foundation and guests who stopped by their booth were entered in for a chance to score prizes, tickets, and much more. The Adam Michael Rosen Foundation proudly presented Runway to Hope’s Spring Soiree on May 18th and Orlando Style Magazine was once again a proud sponsor. The Spring Soiree is the organization’s signature fundraising event and features an inspiring, heartwarming fashion show with more than 150 brave children, all of whom are currently battling or have overcome their pediatric cancer. Modeling much more than clothing, these courageous children walked the runway hand-in-hand with national and local celebrity escorts. Runway to Hope’s Mission is to support families primarily in Central Florida fighting pediatric cancer while seeking a cure. This year’s event was emceed by celebrity guests Daymond John, Lindsay Arnold, and Joey Fatone. Gatorland, the “Alligator Capital of the World,” is celebrating its 70th Anniversary this year in a variety of special ways! On May 18th, the beloved theme park held their first ever Gatorpalooza Fun Fest featuring live music, artisans, vendors, family fun, games, giveaways and, of course, all the alligators, animals and awesomeness that a day at Gatorland has to offer. Gatorpalooza was included with park admission for all guests and a portion of the proceeds benefited Boy Scouts of Central Florida. In addition, guests taking part in the Gatorpalooza festivities had the opportunity to receive a 20 percent discount on Gatorland Annual passes and zip line specials going on throughout the day.

PEOPLE

BETH STEELE The Burger Girl

Beth Steele’s favorite superhero is Wonder Woman – a nickname family and friends often call her. To others she might be simply known as “the burger girl” or “the temp lady,” but either way, she’s a busy woman. Steele owns and operates Orlando-based employment agency Team Staffing Services as well as (4) Beth’s Burger Bar restaurants that specialize in hamburgers. The businesswoman, who launched Team Staffing in 1995, always had an interest in owning her own restaurant that would serve her favorite food. Her chance came in 2012 when she found a location on Washington Street and successfully operated for 6 years. At the closure of her lease downtown, she moved this location to the Orange County Convention Center and is honored to be there. “Handling two companies is a lot on my shoulders but I wouldn’t have it any other way,” she said. Steele works long hours and describes her rush of work as fun and challenging while offshore fishing is her favorite hobby. Her goal is one or two more stores and then to catch the biggest swordfish yet, which their current record is 411 pounds.

Beth Steele’s original hometown is in Upstate, New York, but she calls Orlando her home. She created Team Staffing Services in August 1995. They’re responsible for staffing employees in Light Industrial, Hospitality, and Clerical. Last year (2018) the company billed almost 12 million dollars. “I have been very lucky to have such an unbelievable staff. I couldn’t do it without them. One of my favorite parts of the day is when some stranger says I love your place and staff, they do such an amazing job. You have a great team,” she recalls. She has been nominated for Top 20 Women Owned Business and Top 20 Staffing Agencies on numerous occasions. They have also been ranked on Central FL Top 20 Temporary Placement Agencies several times. Team Staffing Services and Beth’s Burger Bar are a certified minority women owned business. Team Staffing Services is also WBENC Certified. Several different years Team Staffing got Beth the nomination for Women Who Mean Business Award. The ‘temp lady’ thought it would be an awesome idea to open a restaurant in downtown Orlando on December 19th, 2012. Opening the first Beth’s Burger Bar was a challenge while still having the Team Staffing company but it was all worth it in the end. After so much success with the first Burger Bar, she couldn’t stop there. Beth decided that it was time to start planning to open another Burger Bar. Edgewood became her second successful location in November 2014, and she just renewed her lease for another 5 years. It has an old-fashion, homey feel to it, which made it very special to her. Eventually, she came across the Lake Cay area and found a perfect opportunity for a third Burger Bar. “I wanted to go big or go home with this one,” she exclaimed. Beth planned and executed accordingly which turned out to be the biggest one yet for her restaurant. Lake Cay has an authentic modern design, slightly different from the last two. Beth expresses how much she enjoys seeing returning customers from out of town, remembering her

quality burgers and extensive wine list. Not only are these same customers fond of the Peanut Butter Burger and Jalapeno Cheese Crunch Burger with Cheetos, these customers also express their love throughout the country on social media. After six years of being open, they are ready to move forward for to their fourth location in Lake Mary with a total build out and awesome 70-person patio opening in Summer 2019. “Through my staffing agency I was inspired to provide jobs to the same community that has driven my restaurant business for years.” They’ve won and been nominated for several different awards for Best Burgers in Orlando; A-List, Best Bet, Foodie Award, Orlando Magazine, and 4 consecutive years for Orlando Sentinel Dining Awards. “One of the great things about being in business is we get a chance to give back all the time. I participate in the organization Big Brothers & Big Sisters.” Beth began a non-profit organization called Shades-Hopes-Dreams due to her mother’s passing from cancer. The non-profit organization was founded in 2011. Shades-Hopes-Dreams is a non-profit charitable organization that encourages everyone to boost the fight against cancer. After being on crutches several times, in April 2017, Beth decided to open a business called CrutchLife. com. The purpose of this business is to provide the opportunity to look stylish although you are injured. The business allows you to customize your own crutches to your liking. Every month she donates several to Shades Hopes Dreams to give to chemo patients. “I have learned a lot from amazing people. My goal is to continue to grow and make a difference,” she proclaimed. She partners and donates monthly to many charities including, M.S., Autism, Tough Biker, local schools, cancer companies which brings them closer to Central Florida and growing as a team.
