Get involved and comment on our Facebook page. You can access it by clicking on the Facebook link on our website. Yes, the highly praised digital world, the only thing is, how do you find anything between the millions of websites online? Many smart analysts suggest to promote it in print, and now print is back by popular demand. Luxury brands need print media as a vital channel to present products and services to the affluent audience. Our clients are always incorporating innovative ideas into our magazine space, and we encourage your business to partner with us through advertisements in Orlando Style Magazine. We are also excited to announce that we acquired Portfolio Magazine, a high-end real estate-only publication for the Central Florida market. You will see that magazine this month in many locations for free. If for some reason you can’t get hold of any, let us know and we will gladly give you a copy. Portfolio is also available online at: www.PortfolioFlorida.com. We offer FREE online listings on that website for real estate professionals in the region to extend their potential. DEARREADERS, Now that it’s election year with all of its craziness, it seems that this year is even more unusual, with many candidates that we wouldn’t have thought of as our Commander in Chief. I always found it odd that in the primary candidates throw as much dirt as possible on their opponents of the same party, only to endorse them later. Well, that’s politics for you. Everyone is talking about Donald and his rude, unorthodox methods, but we have to give him credit where it is due. He is a master of public relations and knows just how to keep people talking about him, which has led to more popularity than many would like to see.
I hope you have a wonderful springtime with Style! Sincerely,
In a way, this election is both hilarious and horrendous at the same time. No one seems to care if they actually have a plan to get our country into better shape. I hope that once we have a new president, we would be able to see a more unified Congress and House of Representatives that will strive to accomplish things for us, The People.

Mardi Gras at Universal Studios returned to Orlando on February 6 and they are keeping the party going with night after night of dazzling parades, more beads than your neck has room for and a spectacular line-up of 14 different acts across every type of music genre. February’s concerts included Barenaked Ladies, Fall Out Boy, the legendary Diana Ross and others! From pop and country to hip hop and rock, the concerts during Mardi Gras always offer an exciting mix of superstar performers, but that’s not all Mardi Gras has to offer. A special parade with incredible floats, vibrant costumes, towering stilt walkers and lively street performers proved that the spirit of Mardi Gras isn’t restricted to just the Big Easy. Guests were also sure to make their way to the French Quarter Courtyard for live music direct from New Orleans and authentic Cajun food like Spicy Jambalaya, Grilled Andouille Sausage, Shrimp Gumbo and more. The celebration continues this month with even more great concerts and Mardi Gras themed fun so make sure you don’t miss out on the party! There is a legend that the world was once full of magic and splendor, as if all on Earth existed in harmony with Heaven. You could see it in the arts, feel it in the air and hear it in the beat of a drum. It was a land of heroes and sages, dragons and phoenixes, emperors and immortals. Known today as China, this place was once called “the Middle Kingdom” and “the Land of the Divine.” From February 9-10, The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts invited Central Floridians to journey back in time and visit this lost world through a beautiful performance of Shen Yun. The world-class performers captivated the audience and brought the profound spirit of this lost civilization to life with unrivaled artistic mastery. Dance and music combined to make Shen Yun a stunning visual and emotional experience that has left millions around the world in awe as they encounter this divine culture of the Middle Kingdom. Peter Baeza knows it’s not Valentine’s Day without a little chocolate and wine! On February 11, the renowned jeweler threw a Valentine’s Chocolate & Wine Tasting Party at Jewels by Peter B on Park Avenue. Organized by LOOKLIVELUXE, the event was a sinfully wonderful night of decadence and opulence. Guest enjoyed a complimentary tasting of chocolates and fine wines while Peter B’s newest jewels were put on display. Guests of Southern Soiree Under The Stars enjoyed an exciting silent auction, a full open bar, fun prizes and an incredible live performance by former American Idol contestant Shannon Magrane who knocked the house down with her unique vocals. GINSPIRATION SURVIVING SWIMSUIT SEASON, COCKTAIL IN HAND By Diane Zeise
brought to us by mixologist legend Scott Beattie, incorporates fresh herbs and pickled roots for a savory cocktail best served poolside. If you’re unfamiliar with Kimchi, fear not. This naturally fermented superfood preserves nutrients - prebiotics that are already in fresh vegetables while simultaneously self-generating probiotics. Crunchy and tangy, Kimchi has bold flavors, which stimulate the complex taste buds while removing toxins in the stomach. Meet bar season, bikini season and beach season head on with a superfood cocktail of fresh produce and savory taste.
While our neighbors to the north are cursing the
weather and donning another sweater, we Floridians are embracing a new month and a new season - it’s never too early for a little sunshine and a new bikini. And while we’re welcoming the warmth of March, some of us have been silently (or not so) dreading the approach of what I like to call the Spring Scale-a-thon, a time we spend shedding the weight we gained during what was, in my opinion, one of the coldest winters we’ve had in the last few years. The Gin Kimchi Cocktail,

Here’s what you’ll need: For the cocktail 1 1/2 oz gin • 3/4 oz lemon juice • 1/2 oz ginger-honey syrup 3/4 oz ginger beer • 8 pieces pickled ginger • 8 pieces pickled daikon 5 shiso leaves, cut into chiffonade For the ginger-honey syrup 1/2 cup honey • 1/2 cup water • 1/4 cup freshly grated ginger Add the honey and the water to a small saucepan over medium heat and stir until the honey is combined. Add the ginger, turn off the heat, and let steep for 5 minutes. Once steeped, strain the syrup through a fine mesh strainer and store in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks. For the pickled ginger 1/2 pound ginger, peeled and sliced in 1/8-inch pieces • 1 1/3 cups pickling liquid (see below) • 1 small red beet, cooked and peeled In a saucepan over high heat, bring 1 quart of water to a boil. Place the ginger pieces in an airtight container and pour the boiling water over the ginger. Let it rest for 5 minutes. Drain out the water and place the ginger back into the container. In a saucepan over high heat, bring the pickling liquid to a boil. Remove from heat and pour the pickling liquid over the blanched ginger pieces. Cut the beet into 5 slices and add it into the container with the ginger. Place the container, uncovered, in the refrigerator to cool. Remove the beet when the ginger achieves the pink color of your taste. The ginger will keep for up to 3 weeks refrigerated and covered in an airtight container.
For the pickled daikon 6-inch daikon, peeled and thinly sliced • 2 cups pickling liquid Add the sliced daikon to an airtight container. Separately, in a saucepan over high heat, bring the pickling liquid to a boil and pour it over the daikon pieces. Place the container, uncovered, in the refrigerator to cool. Store refrigerated and covered for up to one week. Note: the pickled daikon will smell...interesting, but don’t let that fool you – they taste delicious! For the pickling liquid (yields about 3 1/3 cups) 2 cups rice wine vinegar • 2/3 cup mirin • 2/3 cups filtered sake 1 cup sugar Combine the vinegar, mirin, and sake in a saucepan over high heat. Bring the mixture to a boil, add the sugar, and stir until it dissolves. Store in airtight container. Once all your preliminary ingredients have been pickled, combine the gin, lemon juice, and ginger syrup into shaker, stirring generously. Next, add the pickled ginger, daikon, and shiso and fill with ice. Cover and shake a few times. Add the ginger beer, pour into a highball glass and serve with a good book, a beach blanket and a floppy hat. SMART Homes (AND SMART WOMEN SELLING STYLISH HOMES) What used to be thought of as “technology of tomorrow” is becoming increasingly important to home buyers and sellers today. Nearly half of consumers say smart home technology is important for their current home or their next home purchase. This trend is increasing…almost 2/3 of millennials, the largest share of recent buyers, believe that smart home technology makes for a safer and more enjoyable home. From connectivity and climate control, to security and surveillance, to lighting and entertainment, smart home technology provides the modern homeowner increased comfort and efficiency while adding value to their home. We asked Luxury Real Estate Experts Rajia Ackley, and her daughter, Kristen Ackley, an International Business Masters graduate, about the impact of the “Smart Home” trend on the Central Florida market.
Luxury and International Specialists, Rajia and Kristen Ackley embrace advanced technology at the Four Seasons Community of Golden Oaks.
OS: Where do you see the biggest impact?
OS: Is 2016 really the year of the “Smart Home”?
RA: We are seeing the evidence of this trend in new home construction, especially in areas such as Golden Oaks, Winter Park, Windermere and Lake Nona. Orlando’s luxury home builders are incorporating many elements of advanced home technology into their designs. It is a pleasure to be able to assist our clients in the “Smart-Build” process alongside their architect and builder.
RA: Yes. More and more amazing and affordably priced products are coming to the marketplace allowing even midrange priced homeowners to interact with their homes in ways we could barely imagine a decade ago. The future is about “experiencing” your home…it’s so exciting!
OS: Who seems to have the most interest in this type of technology? KA: A recent study found that 72% of millennials, like myself, would pay to install advanced technology in their home, if not included. 24% of homeowners over age 55 report having some form of advanced home technology in their home.
OS: How can our readers found a Smart Home? RA: Just give us a call. We have partnered up with leading home technology providers and can show you the areas and builders that are at the forefront of the smart home revolution.

Edition 130
M E R C E D E S -A M G S 63 4 M AT I C C A B R I O L E T Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler invented the automobile in 1886. In so doing, they established a tradition of constant further developments and innovative new creations that continue to this day. Mercedes-Benz’s sports car and performance brand are now celebrating this 130th anniversary with the exclusive special edition Mercedes-AMG S 63 4MATIC Cabriolet “Edition 130”. Distinguished by particularly exquisite appointments, the special edition will celebrate its world premiere at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. With the high-gloss special colour “alubeam silver” paint finish, the Bordeaux red fabric top and the matt black 20-inch 10-spoke wheels with high-sheen rim flanges, the Mercedes-AMG S 63 4MATIC Cabriolet “Edition 130” presents an exclusive version of the open-top four seater. “The first automobiles from Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler were open vehicles. Mercedes-AMG honours this achievement of the founding fathers with this highly exclusive cabriolet, and demonstrates the developments the automobile has undergone in the last 130 years, developments which would have been inconceivable at that time”, according to Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of MercedesAMG GmbH. Limited: only 130 cars The exclusive designo nappa leather upholstery in Bengal red/black or optionally crystal grey/black as well as the trim elements in AMG carbon/piano lacquer black also underscore the special position of this limited edition, of which there are only 130 available. A badge in the middle console and an engraving on the steering wheel bezel also highlight this fact. Brake calipers painted red and floor mats with Bengal red or crystal grey edging round off the visual impression. Every customer receives a tailor-made AMG Indoor Car Cover with the embroidered lettering “Edition 130 – 1 of 130” to protect this valuable vehicle from dust in the garage. Furthermore, at the handover of the keys the customer receives the Welcome Package with an Edition 130 badge key ring and an aluminium box for the handing over of the vehicle’s key. The “Edition 130” celebrates its world premiere and sales release at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The non-binding list price in Germany is 226,457 Euros (including 19% VAT). Market launch begins in April 2016. Aside from the expressive design of the exterior and interior, the four-seater cabriolet offers the brand’s hallmark Driving Performance. The 5.5 litre V8-biturbo engine with 430 kW (585 HP) output and 900 Nm maximum torque, the performance-oriented 4MATIC all-wheel drive, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and the high performance composite brake system leave nothing to be desired.

DISCOVER YOUR BALANCE at El Conquistador Resort By Riesa Pascal

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE
When was the last time you took a vacation that was all about you? I’m not talking about an ‘eat, sleep and tan’ weekend getaway. A vacation that’s all about you is a revitalizing trip designed to transform your physical and mental well-being. It’s an extended amount of time deliberately set aside for self-discovery, rejuvenation and relaxation. Maybe you didn’t even know a trip like this existed, as I once did. After experiencing it for myself, I must tell you that this extraordinary vacation does exist and it’s available right now.
Experience Puerto Rico’s renowned resort with a custom Wellness Retreat built around the Four Elements.
300 feet above the sparkling sea and nestled into a lush cliff overlooking the North Atlantic is Puerto Rico’s’ El Conquistador Resort and Las Casitas Village. As a Waldorf Astoria Resort, El Conquistador’s reputation precedes them and for good reason. In addition to world class service and amenities, their acclaimed spa also offers four day Wellness Retreats designed to help guests with mental and physical renewal. In addition to round trip airport transfers and three nights in deluxe accommodations, all retreats also include: • Physical assessment/evaluation with body fat analysis upon arrival • Daily nutritionally balanced meals • Daily Element specific exercise and activities • Access to all amenities on the 500 acre property • One spa service • 20% off additional Spa services or Spa Boutique • Personalized fitness plan to take home Four Wellness Retreats are available at El Conquistador and each is themed around one of the Four Elements. Through specialized programs unique to the resort, guests will experience a one-of-a-kind approach to wellness that strives to help them obtain a healthy balance within the body and mind. Whether your goal is to improve physical fitness and reduce stress levels or simply to have a little fun experiencing a different type of vacation, El Conquistador Resort has an Element Retreat to satisfy your needs.
EARTH My experience with the Earth Element began with a rousing mountain trek on Palomino Island. A true oasis, Palomino is El Conquistador’s picturesque private island exclusively available to resort guests. My companions and I boarded the resort’s free ferry and left for Palomino on a brief, soothing ride across the turquoise sea. As we approached the popular attraction, I was instantly drawn in by the relaxing sight of happy beachgoers and glassy waters gently lapping at the sugary white shore. Once off the ferry, we immediately got our hearts pumping with a scenic hike to several lookout points located around the island. I felt accomplished and proud as I stood on top of the world, taking in awe-inspiring views of the beauty that is Puerto Rico. Upon completing our hike and arriving back at the beach, it was time to cool ourselves down with a little beach-side fun. Despite the availability of exhilarating watersport rentals such as paddle boarding, scuba-diving and snorkeling, myself and a few others decided the time would be better spent lazing around the refreshing water on gigantic novelty floats. Plenty of laughs were shared and dozens of photos were taken as we floated over the gentle swells on massive inflatable slices of pizza and giant swans. 37 STYLETOME.COM
TRAVEL ‘N STYLE
The next day we dusted off our hiking shoes and laced up for what would go on to become one of the many highlights of the week: an astonishing hike through the El Yunque National Forest. Famous for being the only tropical rain forest in the national forest system, El Yunque is 29,000 acres of breathtakingly beautiful views and trails. With the help of our enthusiastic guide, we navigated our way up a paved trail to La Mina Falls where we joined a host of other hikers in a cooling dip under the invigorating waters. As we left the waterfall and continued our hike, we passed elderly couples, families, teenagers and even a father with a bright-eyed baby girl strapped to his back. I marveled at the diversity of visitors and the universal fascination for Puerto Rico’s natural wonder. Our next experience within the Earth Element came in the form of Twilight Yoga. With our exuberant instructor Rita Maldonado, we gathered around El Conquistador’s outdoor Labyrinth and engaged in the physical, mental and spiritual discipline. Through breath control, meditation and specific body postures, we reenergized and restored our mental health with the beautiful crimson sunset in the horizon before us. The relaxation only continued further under the Earth Element
with a Rainforest Hot Stone massage at El Conquistador’s elegant and renowned spa.
FIRE The second Element offered as a Wellness Retreat is Fire and El Conquistador sure knows how to turn up the heat! Everything from an extreme nature hike to a high intensity bootcamp on Palomino Island is guaranteed to leave you a little hot, but feeling good. Relaxation under the Fire Element is provided through a 75-minute Hot Thai Poultice Massage that will melt your tensions away. During the treatment a cloth poultice opens pores and revitalizes your entire body while a deep medicinal heat penetrates your muscles. This will feel especially good after an intense week of thrilling, but physically demanding activities such as my favorite adventure that took place within the Fire Element: an exhilarating kayaking tour through Puerto Rico’s world famous Bioluminescent Bay. On the fully guided night tour we paddled our way through the enchanting mangrove channels leading to Laguna Grande where one of nature’s most beautiful and amazing natural phenomenons occurs. Once there we came face to face with the Pyrodinium Bahamense, 38 STYLETOME.COM
a microscopic plankton capable of producing natural light at the touch of your hand. All kayaks came to an abrupt stop as we further explored (and played!) with the amazing organisms. Throughout the excursion, our guide Nathan passionately explained how the unique ecosystem maintains a perfect balance of life. We were appropriately “fired up” after the wild adventure that is a definite not be missed event.
WATER & AIR Guests who choose to dive into the Water Element will get up close and personal with Puerto Rico’s colorful sea life while snorkeling in the island’s crystal clear waters. Back at the resort, we experienced a different part of the Water Element through a fun and energetic Aqua Parkour class. Fitness instructor Juan Perez led the class which took place in the main pool complex. After donning special gloves, we set about challenging our bodies and building our strength through various water resistance exercises. Even the spa gets in on the Water Element with their Baño de Oro, which is an exfoliation, wrap and mineral bath treatment. Both Water and Air Wellness Retreat guests will rejuvenate their bodies and stimulate their senses with

Labyrinth Meditation under the starlit sky. However, only those who select the Air Element will also experience a high-energy Zip Lining adventure in El Yunque. Brave guests will sail from tree to tree and platform to platform on a network of cables that are mounted above the tropical forest floor. The Air Element will also whip you into shape with an intense Beach Boot Camp, but sweet relief and relaxation will come in the form of a Tropical Bliss Spa treatment which includes an exfoliating scrub and a renewing massage. One of the things I admired most about the Wellness Retreat was the emphasis placed on physical activity and health. Regardless of age or ability, each of the Elements offer four optional fitness classes that can be taken advantage of to boost your wellness. El Conquistador’s state of the art fitness center is guaranteed to take your workout to the next level with a wide range of modern equipment available. A team of fitness specialists and personal trainers will also be available to help design a routine that’s just right for you. Exercise is hard work, but having the right tools and support behind you makes all the difference. Of course it’s not just exercise that makes a Wellness Retreat
successful. It’s also undoubtedly important to be aware of what we’re putting into our bodies. In addition to lively excursions, active fitness classes and powerful moments of meditation and relaxation, we also experienced educational Lunch & Learn classes designed to further push home the importance of healthy eating. The Earth Element includes a Lunch & Learn on raw foods while the Fire Element explores the art of cooking with spices. The Water Element contains a fascinating course on juicing and guests signed up for the Air Element will delve into El Conquistador’s admirable Farm To Table cooking techniques. Who says being healthy can’t be fun? From the moment you drive through the gates of El Conquistador Resort, all your stress and worries will be on the other side where they belong. The distinguished, honored and acclaimed property offers you a vacation that no other resort can. Adventures that will leave your heart racing, excursions that will have your camera snapping and memories to last you a lifetime such as horseback riding along the shores of Palomino, golfing on the resort’s Arthur Hills designed course, a fun-filled family day out at Coqui Water Park and much more. Before I left for 39 STYLETOME.COM
Puerto Rico, I wasn’t even aware of the existence of Wellness Retreats. Now that my eyes have been opened, I can’t stop telling everyone and anyone about this remarkable chance to find your balance and improve your own health and wellbeing. Whether you’ve been living a healthy, active lifestyle for years or you are just beginning your journey into a life of health and wellness, there is an Element that’s just right for you. El Conquistador’s Wellness Retreats present unparalleled opportunities to restore your body, revitalize your mind and reconnect with nature. I encourage you to make 2016 all about you and consider this unique experience designed to bring utter peace and tranquility. Gather your spouse, your kids, your girl friends, your guy friends or just yourself and enter into what is guaranteed to be a vacation for which your body and mind will say “thank you.”

The offset of a clean neutral background and pop of color is a go-to staple when picking vacation evening attire. Feeling like dipping into the shade of Buttercup? Mix it in with a colorful variation design such as this stunning Mary Katrantzou Amsonia Gown.
Day Dress: Strolling the grounds of the hotel or local streets during the day? Try a light weight mini or knee length dress and pair it with a set of flats, sandals or wedges for the perfect spring day ensemble. Stick with cooler colors such as, neutrals and pastels as the sun gets warmer. Our top pick is an all white day dress such as this Joelle Lace-Up Shirtdress from Ralph Lauren paired with an iced coffee shaded belt or shoe.
Beach Coverup: Don’t forget your swimsuit coverup, whether you’re enjoying the pool or soaking up rays on the beach. Find something that easily pulls over or wraps around your suit and flatters your vacation figure. Try a dress coverup, scarf, or sarong. It’s functional, playful and highly essential.

LIVE MUSIC AT UNIVERSAL ORLANDO’S MARDI GRAS Universal Orlando is kicking off the spring season with its annual Mardi Gras festival, a time of fabulous fun and some of today’s most exciting musical acts. This is the party of the year in Orlando, and what would a party be without. Now until April 16, you don’t have to go far to find the greatest music experience right here in Central Florida. Universal Mardi Gras is a timeless tradition in Orlando, serving up thrills of the famed New Orleans festival right in our backyard with an exciting street party, an outrageous parade, authentic Cajun food, and colorful beads flying through the air. Of course, Mardi Gras wouldn’t be complete without the 14 fantastic concerts heating up the Universal Music Plaza stage.
dinner out, make your way to Mardi Gras and enjoy your evening of sing along to songs like “Take It On the Run.” For hip-hop lovers, you won’t want to miss Grammy award-winning artist T-Pain’s visit to Mardi Gras Universal. On Saturday, April 2, the rapper and singer is celebrating our version of New Orleans’ favorite festival with his Orlando fans. Known as one of the most influential rap artists of his time, T-Pain has topped chart after chart with singles like “Up Down.” His latest album, Stoicville: The Phoenix, is sure to be featured at the show.
This year, Mardi Gras at Universal is serving up a not-to-be-missed lineup of performers and musicians sure to make a night of New Orleans cheer an unforgettable experience. From pop icons in the making to classic rock bands of the past decade, Mardi Gras is the perfect event to liven up your weekend and kick off the spring season in high spirits.
On April 9, one of the most current and creative artists of today, Jessie J, is bringing a fun-filled concert experience to Mardi Gras. After first coming onto the music scene in 2011 with her pop standard, “Price Tag,” the platinum-selling tune that made her a household name, J has never ceased to challenge herself or her style. Recently, J was featured on Fox’s performance of Grease: Live, singing the theme song and sporting shockingly-short blond locks. Never afraid of taking risks, J can be expected to have a show-stopping set.
On Saturday, March 12, The Fray is bringing their chart-topping American sound to the Mardi Gras stage. With over 4 million albums and 20 million singles sold, The Fray could be considered a great contributor to the soundtrack of the early 2000s. Catch hits like “Over My Head” and “You Found Me” for an evening of light rock and reminiscing.
Latin music lovers won’t want to miss Mardi Gras’ musical guest on Saturday, April 16. Puerto Rican songwriter and performer, Yandel, is heating up Universal’s annual festival with his Spanish rhythms and Latin flair. After 20 years of a successful career as a member of singing duo Wisin & Yandel, the singer has launched a solo career, with which he has made a mark on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums Chart.
Who could be more colorful and absolutely perfect to end a night of Mardi Gras celebration than the one and only Adam Lambert? On Sunday, March 13, Lambert is taking the stage with his iconic image and powerhouse vocals. The multi-platinum pop singer has come a long way since his debut on the eighth season of American Idol in 2009, establishing himself as one of the stand-out names in contemporary music. Having performed sold out shows as a solo artist, Lambert has served as lead singer for legendary rock band, Queen.
Whatever style of music you’re in the mood for, you’ll find the concerts at Mardi Gras Universal to bring out the New Orleans native in you. This spring, take an evening to celebrate the season, grab a beignet, throw on some beads, and dazzle yourself with a night of live music. If you’re in the mood for a throwback, Mardi Gras Universal is bringing 80s band REO Speedwagon and their classic hits to Orlando. On Saturday, March 26, this group is making their way to Mardi Gras to keep the party going all night long. Signed in 1971, REO Speedwagon singlehandedly light the fire for the Midwest rock movement in America, with albums like 1980s’ Hi Infidelity changing the face of music for decades to follow. BEING IN THE SPOTLIGHT ISN’T ALWAYS A GOOD THING! By Riesa Pascal
FERGIE WETS HERSELF ON STAGE
Think about your most painfully embarrassing moment. A mortifying memory that makes you want to run and hide at the tiniest reminder of the incident. Has a particularly cringe worthy moment come to mind? Good. Now take that moment and imagine it happening in front of millions of people with photos and videos of the incident living online forever. Luckily for most of us, that horrifying thought will remain just a thought. However, celebrities are not always so lucky. From Tom Cruise’s infamous jumping on Oprah’s couch to Jennifer Lawrence’s Oscars tumble, it’s really no surprise that celebs often embarrass themselves in front of cameras. After all, they are human just like the rest of us! Unfortunately these epic celebrity blunders have put a whole new meaning to the word embarrassing.
The option to ‘pull a Simpson’ and walk offstage during her live performance might’ve saved Fergie from the mortifying moment that occurred during a 2005 show with the Black Eyed Peas. Throughout her high energy performance, a growing wet spot became increasingly more visible on the crotch of the singer’s pants. As photos of the incident spread, Fergie’s reps were quick to claim that the stain was just sweat, but tabloids claimed otherwise and the public continued to have their doubts. Several years later, Fergie finally fessed up on the Dame Edna Show and admitted that the so-called sweat was actually urine and that she had accidentally wet herself on stage. Opening up about the now-infamous incident, Fergie explained that she was rushing to get onstage and had no time to visit the lavatory. Fortunately, this moment hasn’t gone on to define the singer’s career, but hopefully Fergie will be a little more attentive to her bladder the next time mother nature calls before a concert.
ASHLEE SIMPSON LIP SYNCS ON SNL
Let’s begin with a classic and wind the clock back to 2004. If you’re over 25 years old, then you probably remember Ashlee Simpson’s live SNL performance, which could easily also be called the most embarrassing moment of her life. The younger and less famous sister of Jessica Simpson was a musical guest on a fall episode of the hit sketch show. She had just performed her single “Pieces of Me” and was about to perform her second tune “Autobiography” when someone behind the scenes accidentally triggered Simpson’s vocals to “Pieces of Me” which exposed her as blatantly lip syncing the earlier performance. In a moment of desperation, Simpson began to do an awkward hoe-down dance as the vocal track was quickly cut and the band continued to play. After realizing the moment couldn’t be saved, Simpson shamefully walked off the stage, only returning during the ending credits to candidly blame her band for playing the wrong song. Unfortunately, Simpson’s career never fully recovered from the embarrassing incident and she soon drifted off into obscurity. To add to the embarrassment, Simpson was loudly booed off stage just a year later after a terrible halftime performance at the 2005 Orange Bowl. I guess now we know why she prefers to lipsync.
JOHN TRAVOLTA CAN’T SAY IDINA MENZEL It was the moment that birthed a million memes and sent the internet into a meltdown! In 2014, John Travolta did a phenomenal job of making himself the laughingstock of the Academy Awards in under 30 seconds. The Grease star had taken to the stage to announce the upcoming performance of “Let It Go” by Idina Menzel when he flubbed his lines big time. Travolta attempted to phonetically pronounce “Idina Menzel” as it appeared on his cue card, but completely butchered the award winning singer’s name and accidentally announced her as “Adele Dazeem.” It wasn’t even a name that remotely resembled Idina Menzel and the internet was quick to let him know. Travolta was mercilessly ridiculed online for his embarrassing bungle. It’s an unfortunate situation, but maybe Travolta will take it as a lesson and be a little more prepared for his next public speaking event. 56

MADONNA TAKES A TUMBLE Madonna’s performance during the 2015 Brit Awards was truly unforgettable, but not for the reasons a celebrity of her status would hope. During a live rendition of her single “Living For Love,” Madonna began to walk up a flight of stairs while slowly unbuttoning a long black cape. Once the world renowned singer reached the top of the stairs, one of her backing dancers was supposed to whip away the cape in one fluid motion. Unfortunately things didn’t quite go as planned, which was bad for Madonna, but perfect for this article! The Armani garment was apparently tied too tightly around the singer’s neck which resulted in the backing dancer yanking the 56 year old singer—and the most successful female artist of all time—backwards down several stairs. As her dancers were frozen in shock, the singer quickly got up and continued her performance without missing a beat. Luckily, the only thing injured during the hard fall was her pride. In an interview about the incident, Madonna credited a healthy, active lifestyle as the reason she didn’t suffer any serious injuries.

before the mistake was realized and Harvey remorsefully revealed that Gutierrez was actually first runner-up. A tearful Miss Colombia had to take off her crown and hand it over to a wide-eyed Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach on live television. Harvey was quick to own up to the mistake and apologized to both the audience and the girls, but the damage was done. Worst still, Harvey went on to spell both countries wrong in an apology tweet sent out immediately after the incident. Fortunately the daytime talk show host found a way to spin the incident to his advantage and brought Miss Colombia on to The Steve Harvey Show to give her an in person apology—an appearance that was also guaranteed to boost his ratings. Gee, what a nice guy!
STEVE HARVEY MISREADS MISS UNIVERSE WINNER We started with a throwback so let’s end this list with a more recent incident that can truly be called the most embarrassing moment of 2015! If you weren’t watching the Miss Universe pageant last year, you were guaranteed to at least be talking about it the next day. Unfortunately for pageant organizers, people weren’t talking about the pageant itself so much as the gargantuan mistake made by host Steve Harvey when he announced the wrong winner. Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez celebrated her victory for more than two minutes 57

SPRING
CLEANSING BY NAOMI SHIF
LIMITING SOCIAL DRINKING.
Most can agree that the honest admittance of
one’s unhappiness is particularly viewed as embarrassing or shameful. This is because our society sees this as a personal weakness and failure. Whether it’s that unsettling feeling tucked away in the back of your psyche or the obvious obsession with the lackluster of your reality, we’ve all felt it from time to time. Generally we look to our past for any explanation of why or how it is possible to have become so desolate in our own lives, but maybe the truth lies in our mindsets. Like many, I’ve ignored the power of my own choices in the matter and the onset of my actions that are directly affecting my daily happiness. Every once in awhile it seems appropriate to filter out the parts of our lives that just aren’t “working” anymore. In light of spring, maybe it’s time for an important spring cleansing of the mind.
One common cure for anyone feeling a tiny bit uneasy is alcohol. Young or old, reaching for something strong to sip down has become the crutch to pacify mental breakdown. If you’ve built a tolerance and a love for a good glass of wine like I have, it can be hard to part from it completely. If a bottle of spirits is your perfect ending to a stressful day, try limiting yourself. Reach for that glass but keep it at a happy limit of one glass with dinner. Instead of feeling sluggish, cotton-mouthed and sleep deprived the next morning trying to rehash all the intolerable things you did the night before, you’ll feel satisfied without overdoing and overindulging. 58

DATE DIFFERENTLY.
The newest trend in dating is the fact that we are now focusing so heavily on our lack of a love-life that we miss the whole beauty of dating. The innocent excitement of meeting someone unexpectedly has turned into a game of left or right and how many matches we can achieve virtually. While our heads are buried somewhere behind a smartphone or laptop we are actually missing the people who walk in and out of our lives daily. Don’t get me wrong, the thought of looking through a catalog of singles is sometimes very intriguing but when you realize the price you pay by deluding romantic attention into the confines of social media, even your own reality can be altered. Logout and focus on the people who are a constant support in your life, maybe the person you’ve been looking for isn’t hiding behind an internet profile afterall.
FIND VALUED USE OF PERSONAL TIME.
It’s almost as if social media has become less a place to personally connect but a place to compete and criticize amongst the individuals in your life. You may think posting about the newest material advancement in your life will somehow heighten your success, but in fact you find yourself fixating on the amount of likes you receive from your peers, or the lack thereof. Time may find itself available to focus on other things we have been notoriously neglecting, if we could only find small ways to pull back from internet platforms in our everyday lives. Instead of that hour long session of social media scrolling before bed, find an inspiring read or relaxation hobby to pick up before turning out the lights each night. I’ve turned to free writing as a way to release stress. Giving your mind the time to breathe after a long day will not only
adjust your free time spent, but also promote a healthier night’s sleep: disconnect to decompress.
STOP ENGAGING IN POINTLESS GOSSIP. As a woman, I am notorious for indulging in conversations focused on other people with my girl friends. On and on, gabbing about things that have no direct effect on our lives. This I have found may be a small way to release steam because something deeper is making me equally unhappy. Instead of deciphering my own buried disappointments I have wasted precious time trying to pick apart others. Instead of engaging in the gossip surrounding my inner circle, I’ve tried to sit silently and observe our social behavior, that has proven to be telling enough. Voicing a frustration or two is perfectly normal but spending a whole evening harping on drama is as equally destructive as it is exhausting.
DRAFT REASONS TO SMILE.
It is so easy to somehow make my life into a soap opera of immense proportion. Taking small steps to resist the urge to rehash the hardships during my day and shift it into a play by play of the positive ones isn’t easy. Sometimes it can feel like squeezing water out of a rock, but get creative if you have to. Write a small list down somewhere in a notebook next to your bed, store it away and when you’re having “one of those days” reread the things that once made you smile. Being happy has no simple fix but focusing your attention on your personal responsibility in the matter could be a huge step in the right direction.

THE CURRENT HEALTH BUZZ
ZIKA By Alexandra Niblett
One big topic of conversation currently swarming around the nation is the Zika virus, an illness spread via mosquitoes. Aside from most commonly being annoyances to people, many of these bloodthirsty insects carry a multitude of diseases, making mosquitoes the deadliest insect on Earth. While there has yet to be a large outbreak of the Zika virus in the United States, it’s important to be aware of what it is, what the symptoms are, and if you are at risk. The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The good news is, this illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting from a few days to a week. In May 2015, the first confirmed Zika virus infection was declared in Brazil by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and the outbreak led to reports of GuillainBarré syndrome and pregnant women giving birth to babies with birth defects and poor pregnancy outcomes, confirmed by CDC. Since May 2015, the virus has spread to more than 20 countries in Latin America and continues to spread as more people
travel to affected areas. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a Public Health emergency of International concern relating to the Zika virus on February 1, 2016, and as of February 3 of 2016, there have been 35 travel-associated Zika virus disease cases reported in the U.S., according to CDC. The Obama Administration is asking Congress for $1.8 billion in emergency funding to take action toward eliminating
and preventing the Zika virus through mosquito control programs, vaccine research, and educating and improving health care for low-income pregnant women, the White House said February 8. Included in Obama’s proposal is $355 million in foreign aid to South America, Central America and the Caribbean. While a week-old virus may not sound far off from a case of a bad cold or stomach bug, this virus is alarming particularly due to its potential correlation to birth defects

women and new mothers, who have travelled to affected areas and had symptoms of Zika. Florida currently has the capacity to test only 475 people, and these antibody tests allows the state to confirm whether the tested individuals have or have not ever had the Zika virus. In his recent executive order no. 16-29, Scott designated the Florida Department of Health as the lead state agency to coordinate emergency response activities among the various state agencies and local governments.
Zika virus can spread from a pregnant woman to her unborn baby. Reports of a serious birth defect of the brain known as microcephaly in babies of mothers who had Zika virus while pregnant are growing. Microcephaly is a birth defect in which the size of a baby’s head is smaller than expected for age and sex. Congenital microcephaly is often a sign of the brain not developing normally during pregnancy, according to CDC. There is no vaccine or medicine for Zika at this time, but researchers are working on developing preventatives to combat the virus.
Even if you aren’t pregnant, aren’t intending to one day become pregnant, or cannot become pregnant, contracting the virus is not fun and is not good for your health. Mosquitoes are drawn to standing water, and Florida is known for its abundance of swamps and wetlands. Even if you don’t live near one, it’s almost impossible to escape mosquitos thanks to the state’s humidity and because mosquitoes thrive in hot weather. Mosquito season begins in the spring when the temperatures rise, and it reaches its peak during the hot summer months.
Florida Department of Health (DOH) has a mosquito-borne illness surveillance system and is working with the CDC, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and local county mosquito control boards to ensure that the proper precautions are being taken to protect Florida residents and visitors. There are extra measures people can take to protect themselves from mosquito-borne illnesses, including drawing standing water, covering your skin with repellent and clothing, covering windows with screens, etc. Pregnant and breastfeeding women can use EPA-registered insect repellents.
The burning question many have is “what good do mosquitoes do for our ecosystem?” And unfortunately, that has yet to be determined. They are primarily known for being disease carriers, and now Zika virus is the latest buzz. As we begin entering spring, there’s no better time than now to take precaution and avoid those pesky mosquitoes.
Florida Gov. Rick Scott asked the CDC to provide at least 1,000 Zika antibody tests so that Florida can test individuals, particularly pregnant

REASONS TO DRINK MORE COFFEE By Diane Zeise
62 STYLETOME.COM
HEALTH
Hiding your love for Joe?
Everybody’s favorite Tall, Dark & Handsome has been getting a bad rap but now we’re giving you more than a few reasons to bring Coffee home to meet the fam. 1. ANTIOXIDANT KICK In a study conducted in 2005, researchers at the University of Scranton found that the human body absorbs the most antioxidants from coffee. Analyzing the antioxidant level of more than 100 foods, study leader Joe Vinson, Ph.D., and his associates discovered that good ‘ole java provides a bigger antioxidant kick than popular trends like tea, milk, cranberries and yes, even chocolate. Vinson and his associates further found that, contrary to previous belief, coffee (both caffeinated and decaf) surpassed fruits and vegetables in antioxidant production as well. We’re not suggesting you replace your daily broccoli intake with a trip to Barnie’s, but a cup or two of coffee a day really will give you a boost.
2. CANCER DEFENSE Because of its incredible antioxidant production, coffee consumption has also been linked to lower cancer risks. Conducting a study that spanned 20 years, Brigham and Women’s Health Hospital along with Harvard University followed 112,897 men and women, finding that women particularly who consumed three or more caffeinated cups of coffee daily were much less likely to develop skin cancer than women who didn’t drink as much coffee. With beach season on the brink, it’s safe to say many of us gals will be trading our usual cooler cocktail for an iced Americano. 3. CARDIOVASCULAR PROTECTION Listen up Guys, this one’s for you! A Japanese study of more than 76,000 participants found that men specifically who drank one to two cups of coffee a day reduced their risk of cardiovascular disease-related death by more than 35%. While a cup of coffee doesn’t excuse you from an active lifestyle, if you want to boost your ability to maintain your gym membership, a cup of coffee a day
may do the trick. On a related note, caffeine increases the amount of fatty acids in the bloodstream, allowing your muscles to burn more fat to fuel your mid-day workout. 4. LIVER LOVE Attention Weekend Warriors: according to a study published in 2006, which followed 125,000 people over 22 years, drinking at least one cup of coffee a day decreases your risk of developing liver cirrhosis by 20%. That’s right. The more coffee you drink, the less likely you are to succumb to an autoimmune disease brought on by excessive alcohol consumption; a disease that puts you at higher risk of liver failure and cancer. 5. BYE BYE DIABETES Just one more reason to maintain your Starbucks Gold Membership is the impact coffee has on Type 2 diabetes. According to a study conducted by The American Chemical Society, drinking four or more cups of coffee daily can reduce your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by up to 50%. You read that right.
“JUST ONE MORE REASON TO MAINTAIN YOUR STARBUCKS GOLD MEMBERSHIP” Your coffee addiction is literally cutting your risk in half. The study further found that each added cup of coffee reduces your chances of Type 2 diabetes by an additional seven percent. 6. BRAIN BOOST If you’re 65 and older, take note. Researchers from the University of Miami and the University of South Florida teamed up to study the effect coffee consumption had on brain health. What they uncovered is fascinating. Their study found that on average, individuals 65 and older with higher blood levels of caffeine postponed their susceptibility to Alzheimer’s by two to four years. That’s 730 - 1,460 more days to master sudoku and prepare yourself for the mental war called getting older. Dr. Chuanhai Cao, a neuroscientist at the USF, and co-author of the study, said, “We are not saying that moderate coffee consumption will completely protect people from Alzheimer’s disease. However, we firmly believe that moderate
coffee consumption can appreciably reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s or delay its onset.” 7. HAPPY HOUR When you sheepishly admit that you feel a sense of euphoria in the morning when you’re hanging out with Joe, you’re not simply addicted to caffeine. Researchers at the National Institute of Health discovered that those whose daily intake of coffee surpassed three cups were ten percent less likely to struggle with depression than those who didn’t drink java at all. And the reason isn’t what you think. You owe your mental health to those trusty antioxidants and not your daily caffeine high. What other number significantly decreases when your happiness increases? The Harvard School of Public Health determined that suicide risk is 50% lower in men and women who drink at least two to four cups of coffee regularly. Why? Coffee acts as a mild antidepressant, aiding in the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline.
63 STYLETOME.COM
8. STRESS RELIEF Examining the brains of sleep deprived rats, researchers at the Seoul National University discovered that rats exposed to coffee aromas experienced actual changes in the brain proteins directly tied to that stress. This reaction once again directly correlates with coffee’s antioxidant boost. The coffee-sniffing rats in the study expressed brain proteins with healthy antioxidant properties proven to protect nerve-cells from stress related damage. Yes. Simply a whiff of your favorite bean may help reduce stress derived from lack of sleep. So the next time a friend or family member expresses reservations about Java Joe, remind him or her of all the positive things Coffee does for you. Remember to talk with your physician before making serious changes to your caffeine consumption, especially if you are at risk for caffeine related issues.

FISH TALES
A SHORT DISCUSSION OF FRAUD IN THE SEAFOOD MARKETPLACE By Mark NeJame / Contributor Vanessa Louise Braeley
YES. Seafood fraud is a thing. And one worth mentioning – at one time or another, we’ve all paid top dollar for some crisp Blue Point oysters at brunch, that extra fatty tuna belly sashimi or a creamy bowl of lobster bisque (Maine lobster, of course). Chaching… it adds up! And the seafood industry knows it. So they lie. They lie about the quality of the fish. They lie about where the fish is from. They lie about the species of fish. When all is said and done, Americans are paying an extra $25 billion dollars annually as a result of this trickery (more appropriately known as straight-up fraud).
Let’s back up about 6 years. In 2010, Oceana, an ocean conservation group, “conducted one of the largest seafood fraud investigations in the world to date, collecting more than 1,200 seafood samples from 674 retail outlets in 21 states to determine if they were honestly labeled.” This investigation carried on for a few years; the final report titled Oceana Study Reveals Seafood Fraud Nationwide was released in 2013, and hang on to your chopsticks, folks, because it isn’t pretty. A whopping 44% of all retail establishments sold mislabeled fish, which was identified 78 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
through DNA testing. The most commonly misrepresented fish was snapper and tuna (89 and 59 percent, respectively), however halibut, grouper, cod and Chilean sea bass also made it on the list. (For those inquiring minds, only 7% of salmon is mislabeled.) So what else are we eating? The Study goes on to say that the fish “substitutes” were often species, which carried health advisories, such as escolar and tilapia. Terrific! But don’t boycott your local sushi stop just yet; the root of the problem is much deeper than
IN THE KNOW the local retail shops. Oftentimes retailers aren’t aware they are purchasing mislabeled fish. In fact, even the distributors may not know they are purchasing mislabeled fish. Researchers unanimously blame foreign fisheries from countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Ecuador and China – all of which have “loose aquaculture laws,” as reported by The Atlantic in March 2015. Countries such as this stand to benefit from using fraudulent species, such as using catfish for grouper, in an effort to throw off inspectors at customs, avoiding anti-dumping tariffs and catching up to four times the price for its sub-par substitute. In one notable 2010 case, the FDA Office of Criminal Investigations imprisoned the former CEO of a seafood importing corporation for importing falsely labeled fish – the company reportedly saved $60 million in tariffs, which was promptly ordered to be paid back through restitution. More recently, Inside Edition conducted its own investigation of 28 different restaurants around the country, and found langostino in the lobster bisque, which the FDA says is a no-no: “[S]oup with only langostino cannot be called lobster bisque. It must be labelled as langostino lobster bisque.” So what to do about this fishy behavior? Unfortunately, due to lack of federal funding, only 1% of imported seafood is inspected for mislabeling. Federal officials at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) only have 90 agents nationwide to conduct these inspections. “If you consider the coastline of the U.S., it’s a massive amount of territory to be covered by 90 agents,” stated Trey Knotts from the NOAA. Thankfully, efforts are being made for the commercial industry here at home. Scientists here at the University of South Florida recently developed a portable, commercial seafood identifier called Grouperchek, which can be used by distributors, retailers and consumers. It’s impossible to ignore that overfishing our oceans is a major contributor to this supply-and-demand crisis, but that’s a discussion for another time. The Obama administration has taken steps to address to combat fraud at the federal level by proposing the NOAA and the FDA work together on this issue. In the meantime, read the Study, avoid snapper and always pack your Grouperchek... Mark NeJame

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW Special Promotional Feature
Many people are surprised to learn that the defense attorney in a federal criminal case has no right to take a pretrial deposition. Federal criminal prosecutions cover all kinds of cases including drug dealing, tax crimes, securities fraud, theft of government property and even possessing a Bald Eagle feather. The list of federal crimes is quite extensive and punishment can include decades in prison depending upon the crime.
Mark L. Horwitz
NO DEPOSITIONS FOR DEFENDANTS IN FEDERAL CRIMINAL CASES By Mark L. Horwitz | Criminal Defense Attorney Law Offices of Mark L. Horwitz, P.A. 17 East Pine St.Orlando, FL 32801 P: 407-843-7733 • F: 407-849-1321 mark@mlhorwitzlaw.com • www.mlhorwitzlaw.com
A deposition is a way for the defendant’s lawyer to learn what the government witnesses know about a case. In civil cases, in state and federal court, the parties exchange witness lists and before trial both sides can require witnesses to appear before a court reporter and answer questions under oath. In a Federal criminal case, however, the government does not have to disclose its witnesses to the defense unless the witness is an expert. Also, the defense lawyer, even if aware of potential witnesses has no right to take their deposition unless special circumstances exist such as the witness is ill and may not survive. Many question why depositions are allowed in civil cases when people are fighting over money or property but not in a criminal case when a citizen’s liberty is at stake. A federal prosecutor has no legal requirement to disclose witnesses prior to trial and so a defendant may learn of a witness for the first time when the government brings that person into court to testify before the jury. That is why some have called a federal criminal trial ‘a trial by ambush’. In addition, the government in a federal criminal case
has no obligation to take a sworn statement from a witness during the course of its investigation. If the government does get a sworn statement from a witness, the government attorney is not required to disclose it to the defense until after the witness is examined by the federal prosecutor at the trial. The reasoning behind such rules is based upon the belief that the witnesses, if disclosed, may be in danger. While that is possible, in reality, threats and intimidation of witnesses in federal as well as state criminal cases are rare. Many have suggested that a more appropriate rule would be that witnesses should be disclosed before trial and depositions allowed before trial unless the government can establish to the judge a realistic concern for the safety of a witness. While federal prosecutors and investigators work diligently to make a criminal case, mistakes can happen and the government is not always right. Ultimately, a jury has to decide. In order that the jury be presented with all important information, our justice system would be better served if the attorney for the defendant was provided the names of all government witnesses and allowed to take their depositions prior to trial.

OUT & ABOUT
FESTIVALS OF SPEED By Therese Kaltenecker
Starting Friday, April 1st, ‘Festivals of Speed’ makes a pit stop in Downtown St. Pete at Vinoy
Park for a weekend of luxury and speed. The festival begins with a luxury lifestyle cocktail reception on Friday and culminates in the main event of the festival, the display of exotics, on Sunday, April 3rd. 86 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
OUT & ABOUT
The Festivals of Speed has been delighting luxury-car enthusiasts and collectors around the Florida state since 2004. The show currently operates in Miami, St. Petersburg, Amelia Island, and Orlando, and has previously operated in both New York and California. It not only showcases luxury vehicles, but motorcycles, aircraft, and watercraft. This April, Festivals of Speed returns to where the show began. Joe Sabatini founded the event in St. Petersburg after an obsession with automotive art motivated him to host an art show. That initial show had a guest list of about 40 people, and primarily focused on automotive art. However, he lined the block surrounding the building with Ferrari’s. After the event’s success, the attendees marveled at the cars and suggested that he go to the Ferrari dealership and solicit sponsorship for a car show. Sabatini did just that, and secured Ferrari as the event’s first sponsor. Since that first art show, attendance for Sabatini’s Festivals of Speed in St. Petersburg has increased 500-fold to approximately 22,000 attendees last year for Sunday’s display of exotics alone. The festival also had more than 350 cars, not including the vintage Harley Davidsons and brand-new Ducatis as well as dozens of aircraft and watercraft. More Ducatis will be featured at the upcoming Festivals of Speed event, along with new Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Rolls Royces. As for the vehicle at April’s event that excites him the most, Sabatini names an ultra-rare ’65 Bentley open-wheel racecar, one of only two ever made and the only one that still exists. “You don’t see a lot of Bentley racecars, especially the vintage, so this one is a real treat.”
JOE SABATINI FOUNDED THE EVENT IN ST. PETERSBURG AFTER AN OBSESSION WITH AUTOMOTIVE ART MOTIVATED HIM TO HOST AN ART SHOW.
This rarity is what makes luxury and exotic vehicles so appealing, says Sabatini. Not many people can afford vintage vehicles, and the amount of money buyers are willing to spend on these cars demands some attention. For instance, a vintage ’57 Ferrari 335 Spider Scaglietti sold for $36.2 million at an auction in Paris this past February. Other vintage vehicles routinely sell for $10, $20, and $30 million, Sabatini explains. Owning a vintage vehicle becomes a rite of passage into the world of upper-class elite. It is an aspiration.
87 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
The “American Dream” is a white picketfenced house and a Bentley in the driveway. However, Sabatini appreciates the craftsmanship of these vintage vehicles over price tags and rarity. “What you can really appreciate about [these cars], especially the vintage ones from way back when they were all literally hand-built, is the talent it takes to build them. Look at the vintage Ferraris. You can smell the leather seats, the engine, and the oil, and you really feel like you are a part of the automobile.” Starting Friday, April 1, you will have a chance to experience these vintage vehicles. The luxury lifestyle cocktail reception takes place under a 100-foot tent, and features some of the best vintage cars and motorcycles in the show. The last FOS in St. Petersburg attracted approximately 600 people to the reception. The event this year will feature a Sinatra-style band that is sure to delight attendees with smooth jazz tunes all night. The reception ticket includes an open bar with premium liquors, and this year, Sabatini is introducing a new wine pavilion for attendees to enjoy fine wine from bistros around the park. The luxury lifestyle cocktail reception last from 8-11 pm, and the $125 event admission includes open bar, food, music, a gift bag, and an event poster. On Sunday, April 3, the display of exotics takes place from 10am to 4pm. General admission is $20 and kids 12 and under are free. Tickets to the Supercar Lounge are also available for purchase for $85, which includes an open bar, gift bag, and event poster. VIP tickets for the display of exotics are $100, which includes a VIP Patron badge, open bar, lunch, a VIP gift bag, and an event poster. Ticket to both the luxury lifestyle reception and the display of exotics can be purchased now through festivalsofspeed.com. For out-of-town guests looking to attend the weekend’s festivities, Festivals of Speed has rooms reserved at the Hilton St. Petersburg Bayfront and The Birchwood. Guests can find more information at www.festivalsofspeed.com.

SNAP! DOWNTOWN OS One-on-One with the Artists By Richard Allyene | Photos By Tina Craig
MARK GMEHLING What you should know: Gmehling is the German-born street artist that two years ago created a five story high-mural on a building at the intersection of Mills and East Colonial. You know, the one that resembles an anguished Mickey Mouse. Also, the ‘G’ in his name is silent. OS: How did you first meet Patrick and Holly Kahn?
The four artists whose works are currently on display at Snap! Downtown, Patrick and Holly Kahn’s new gallery space at 420 East Church Street include, Mark Gmehling (Nu Werks), Chris Robb (Continuum), Rebecca Rose (Sculpturings) and Earl Funk (Seasons Change).
MG: Patrick contacted me via Facebook late 2013 and we started communicating and organized my trip and show in June 2014 where I met him and Holly personally and we finally became friends. OS: What is Nu Werks all about? MG: Nu Werks is a small cross-section of my recent work from 2012-2016 that hasn’t been seen in the U.S. so far. OS: You’re a German street artist who’s shown in major cultural centers around the world. What is it about Orlando that you appreciate as an artist? MG: Coming to Orlando feels like holiday to me. I’ve met a lot of people I’m still connected with since the last stay when I already felt super welcomed. People seem open-minded, optimistic and happy—maybe it’s because of the weather? There’s a general cooperativeness that I miss sometimes in Germany. I really enjoy my time in Orlando and hope to be back soon. OS: How would you describe your art in one sentence? MG: I’m visualizing the absurdity, the triviality and the drama of human life. OS: Describe why your art is relevant, in two sentences. MG: It is relevant because it documents my view on human and society in our time. It makes people think or smile, at least it touches them! It is a platform for their fantasy.
Author’s Note: OS was unable to connect with Rebecca Rose before deadline. Rose is a Davenport-based sculptor who has shown internationally and has been the focus of art documentaries. Find more information on her work here: www.sculpturings.com • Check out Orlando Style’s Up Close & Personal interview with Snap! Patrick and Holly Kahn at www.OrlandoStyleMagazine.com.

ORLANDO ARTS
CHRIS ROBB
EARL FUNK
What you should know: Robb is a local artist who has been a partner for 13 years at preeminent, Orlando-based ad agency, Push, where he remains Chief Brand Officer. OS: How did you first meet Patrick and Holly Kahn?
What you should know: Earl Funk is a local tattooist and street artist who has recently shifted his focus to acrylic works on canvas. His Seasons Change exhibit was co-curated by the Kahns and Orlando- based artist and yoga instructor, Gina Bernardini, whose Yoga Mix studio also occupies space at the 420 East building in downtown.
CR: I met Patrick when he first moved here from LA. A mutual friend thought we should meet. Then over the years we would see each other at the Snap! events and openings. He comes from a design background also and he, Holly and I share very similar taste and sensibilities in art and design. Patrick and Holly bring a very strong point of view and a very high taste level to every show they curate.
OS: What’s your exhibit, Seasons Change, all about? EF: These works take a look at personal changes that take place in an individual’s life—changes that may occur over the course of a year much like…the seasons. The entire series features animals with windows on their heads and hearts which are meant to signify openness to change or a willingness to change things about yourself.
OS: What did it mean to you to have Continuum be one of the inaugural exhibits featured at the new Snap! Downtown gallery space?
OS: In addition to cultivating your street art, you had been tattooing at Trinity Tattoo Company in Longwood for over 10 years. Was the move to open your own place a personal example of seasons changing?
CR: A lot of things at once. Obviously I was thrilled because I knew that Snap! would deliver a lot of eyeballs. Their openings are always very well attended so I knew to expect a vibrant and exciting opening night. I was excited for the opportunity. I also felt like my work would be in good hands with Patrick and Holly. Having someone show your work who gets what you are doing makes a big difference.
EF: I’m not sure it was inspired by that, but that’s interesting, I mean I never really thought about it like that but I guess it does apply. There were some other personal changes that were happening in my life at the time that more inspired that series.
OS: What’s present now, in Orlando’s art scene, that wasn’t there before? CR: A growing sophistication. Not only with the art itself but also with the collector base, potential collectors and art lovers. Having a vibrant art scene is critical for a city. It used to be a very small insular group that made up the art scene around here. Now I’m seeing a lot more young people that are passionate about art and that’s great. It’s feeling like a bigger city.
OS: The East, is a tattoo studio in Ivanhoe Village that you recently opened with business partner and fellow tattooist, Steve Roberts. Why The East?
OS: How would you describe your art in one sentence?
OS: How would you describe your work, in one sentence?
CR: Vibrant abstracts that use color, assemblage, printmaking techniques and drawing to create a transparency to the paint, a polished finish and a unique fingerprint and history to each piece.
EF: Most of what I do is cartoon based illustrations of animals and things that I find a little obscure.
EF: Because we are in search of light, and that’s where we are looking for it.

WHEN TRAVELING WITH YOUR BEST FRIEND
Courtesy of El Portal
For many people, pets are an integral part of the family, and a vacation would feel incomplete without their presence. However, due to concerns over where to stay, what mode of transportation to use, and how the trip will impact the pet’s behavior and well-being, the prospect of traveling with them may induce stress.
DON’T take a hotel’s claim that it is pet-friendly at face value. Many hotels accept pets, but not all welcome them. If you are considering a hotel that will charge you extra for bringing your furry friend, look for another option if possible. Hotels that are truly pet-friendly will not upcharge you and will take steps to ensure that human and nonhuman guests alike have a comfortable stay. When in doubt, call the hotel, ask about their pet policies, and try to gauge their true attitude toward pets.
Of course, selecting a pet-friendly hotel is key, but to ensure an enjoyable getaway for all members of the pack, consider the following tips: DO map out your entire travel itinerary before the trip, taking your pet’s safety and comfort into consideration at every step. Where will your animal companion stay when you are exploring places that may not be pet-friendly? Are there parks or pet-friendly restaurants near your hotel? Where is the closest veterinarian in the event of an emergency?
DO plan the transportation of your pet. If you are flying to your destination, research the airline’s policies for transporting animals. Larger pets must fly in the cargo hold, where some airlines will only carry animals at certain times. If your pet is small enough to fit under the seat, research the best type of carrier and whether the airline recommends a particular brand. Allow your pet a chance to become accustomed to the carrier well in advance of the trip. Try to book direct flights if possible to minimize the length of the journey. If you are driving, be sure to schedule stops every few hours to allow yourself and your pet a chance to stretch and breathe some fresh air. For safety in the event of an accident, your pet should be kept in a
If you are worried that your pet will suffer anxiety or disrupt other travelers or hotel guests, do consult your vet in advance of the trip. He or she may be able to prescribe anxiety medication or a mild sedative to calm your pet if needed and will likely have other travel tips to offer. 92

crate or carrier that is restrained by a seatbelt in the back seat. Of course, avoid leaving your pet in the car, even on days that feel cool or when you will only be gone for a short time. On a 72-degree day, the temperature inside a car can soar to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit within an hour. Feed your pet only a small meal before traveling to reduce the risk of motion sickness and always have plenty of bottled water for your pet.

DO pack items that are familiar to your pet, such as his or her bowl, bed, favorite toy, and crate. Maintain your pet’s health while away by bringing his or her food and any medications that may be needed. DON’T leave your pet alone in the hotel room. Aside from the fact that most hotels do not allow pets to be left alone, doing this may cause your companion to become anxious and possibly disruptive to other guests. If you are planning an excursion and bringing your pet will not be an option, see if there is a kennel nearby where you can board him or her for a few hours. In the event that your hotel does allow you to leave the pet in your room while you are gone and you choose to do so, be sure to leave your phone number with the front desk in case of an emergency. DO ensure that you pet is up to date on vaccines and other preventive measures, like heartworm and flea or tick treatments. Some hotels require this, and it will protect your pet and other animals that you may encounter in the course of your travels. DO remember that as much as you adore your pet, not everyone that you encounter on your trip will share the same sentiment. This may be the case even at petfriendly hotels or restaurants. With that in mind, be considerate of all guests by ensuring that your pet is quiet and well-behaved. Keep him or her on a leash or otherwise contained. Only allow your pet to use the restroom in designated areas and be sure to clean up afterwards.
